In the illustrated comic books published with the first series of toy characters, He-Man is seen as a barbarian from a strong Eternian tribe. The planet's inhabitants are experiencing the consequences of the Great Wars, which ravaged the civilizations that once ruled supreme over all of the lesser beings. The conflicts left behind high tech machinery and weaponry known only to select persons. An earlier incarnation of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull gives He-Man many of these weapons, and then he sets out in order to preserve the secrets associated with Castle Grayskull from the evil villain Skeletor.

He-Man carries one half of the Power Sword; the second half is possessed by Skeletor, whom employs it as his primary weapon. Anytime coupled, the two halves of the Power Sword will give the key for Castle Grayskull. This is why both the figures' swords could merge into one single sword, when the figures had been originally released. In one early illustrated storyline, He-Man and Skeletor actually united their two Power Sword halves to form the actual Power Sword in order to conquer a common adversary.

He-Man is basically non-violent and in most cases purely resorts to combat as the final option, normally preferring to outsmart his opponents, his most violent methods characteristically involves body throws. Per broadcast criteria of the period, in the Filmation show, He-Man was not permitted to utilize his own sword as an attack weapon. Nor was he empowered to directly strike or kick anyone. He was only permitted to demolish robot enemies. The 1987 motion picture as well as 2002 television series show him battling significantly more aggressively. He-Man is depicted as a leader, most visibly within the movie version where he's known as the chief of the resistance and Skeletor intended to push him into submission in place of just killing him fearing that carrying out aforementioned would likely transform He-Man right into a martyr which would motivate others to fight.

He-Man's primary weapon is his sword, but he always utilizes additional weaponry, such as the laser-gun during the motion picture, and devices whilst fighting his foes. His sword is evidently absolutely indestructible and ready to deflect bolts of power both supernatural and technological. Interestingly his sister Adora's sword of Protection is not as indestructible, since the gemstone inside the hilt ended up being demolished, stopping her from making transformations. This might mean that the sword contains a weak-point or perhaps that Adora's sword is far more inferior to Adam's. Furthermore, the sword allows him the particular power to transform him from Prince Adam straight into He-Man and back by applying the powers of Castle Grayskull. Originally He-Man's primary weapon was a powerful axe. The upper body piece on his battle harness is made of an Eternian mineral labeled Corodite that helps increase his physical strength.

Prince Adam's cat is really a jittery green tiger given the name Cringer. When Adam turns into He-Man, he likewise transforms Cringer into a brave armored green tiger known as Battle Cat by pointing his blade at him- a talent Adam realized unexpectedly the very first moment he became He-Man; Cringer, of course, cowered in fear from watching what Adam had turned into and whilst reassuring him that nothing had really changed, Adam directed the sword at Cringer, which delivered a bolt of energy toward the tiger and changed him. Battle Cat serves as He-Man's steed and fierce fighting companion.

Adam is friendly with the stunning and strong-willed Teela, the adoptive daughter of his mentor Man-At-Arms, likewise referred to as Duncan. Adam and Teela grew up together with each other and today, as Captain of the Guard, Teela is entrusted to guard the prince. This woman often sees Adam as very lazy and cowardly mainly because she's oblivious of his alternate id as He-Man. Man-At-Arms is He-Man's best buddy and the Eternian noble family's head of technology and weapons. In several episodes, Man-At-Arms unveils innovative and fantastic weaponry or items which help He-Man and his colleagues.

The spin-off animated tv series She-Ra: Princess of Power later disclosed that Adam has a twin sister, the Princess Adora, a leader in The Great Rebellion to stop Hordak on the planet Etheria. Adora, the same as Adam, is given the gift of the power of Grayskull and possesses her very own blade which she utilizes to change into She-Ra, Princess of Power. He-Man makes quite a few appearances in the She-Ra: Princess of Power television season.

A cartoon tv series was created by Jetlag Productions to go along with the He-Man action figures toy collection, named The New Adventures of He-Man. Though typically keeping consistent with the tale within the mini-comics, with certain deviations, including Skeletor already having the cybernetic chestplate and not determining that Prince Adam and He-Man were precisely the same individual, this specific show retained the dual identity of Prince Adam and He-Man. In the world of Primus, Prince Adam posed as a voyaging vendor and the nephew of Master Sebrian to be able to cover his confidential id. His transformation pledge was also transformed slightly to become "By the Power of Eternia".
