CES holds first Huddle House Spirit Night

Calhoun Elementary School held its very first “Huddle House Spirit Night” on April 2nd and it was very successful, according to CES assistant principal Jason Hawkins. Staff members signed up and worked a shift during the event, and they did everything from greet guests, bus tables, and sweep floors to washing dishes and helping prepare the orders.

Huddle House Puts on Fresh Face, Readies for Growth

The times are a changin' at family-dining chain Huddle House. With new CEO Michael Abt on board since October 2012, an updated design prototype, and a sharper focus on franchisee growth and profitability, the brand is ready to hit new heights in 2013 and beyond.

To ensure its success, Abt says the brand will continue its long-time focus on growth in small markets, which allows each operator to truly connect with the local community and get to know customers on a personal level.

"The importance of creating a community feel with our existing customers is something that’s not new to us," Abt says. Huddle House Appoints Veteran Franchise Attorney, Melissa Rothring, to General Counsel

"Melissa’s franchise knowledge mixed with her experience in multi-brand retail and QSR franchise brands made her the ideal for this position," Abt said. "Melissa joins our growing executive team with a wealth of experience, which we will rely upon to further advance our efforts and strategies."

As General Counsel for the 400-unit brand, Rothring will be responsible for the overall legal support and legal strategic planning for Huddle House, as well as maintaining legal continuity in franchising business analysis and management.

Huddle House is redesigning its restaurants with a signature tower entrance, plush seating and contemporary colors, and the efforts are already paying off.

“Most importantly, our customers are responding through increased visits,” said Huddle House chief executive Michael Abt. “The new design helps to promote stronger value to our customer.”

Redesigned units have seen sales increase 30 percent or more.

When Abt took over the top position at the Atlanta-based family-dining chain in October, he said he knew the brand was ripe for growth. By April 30, the end of the company’s 2013 fiscal year, Huddle House will have signed 26 new locations...

Since typical real estate opportunities are at a premium, development executives for some restaurant franchisors are investing in nontraditional partnerships with retailers, convenience stores and travel centers to drive growth in 2013.

Checkers Drive-In, Fazoli’s and Huddle House officials disclosed plans to pursue growth of their standard restaurant footprints this year, but they also expressed optimism that nontraditional expansion would let them reach more customers and better serve their franchisees.

The Huddle House franchise has been growing far beyond the South in recent years, but officials with the restaurant company, which offers breakfast food 24 hours a day, said it wants to reclaim its traditional markets and plans a major expansion in the Chattanooga area.

Mark Whittle, chief development officer for Huddle House, based near Atlanta, said he sees opportunities for five additional stores on the fringes of Chattanooga, according to market research.

Pilot Flying J opens its 300th Restaurant

Pilot Flying J has opened its 300th store. Huddle House opened at the Pilot Travel Center in Anna, Texas on June 11.

The company has been quickly adding restaurants to its network of over 600 trail center locations throughout the United States. Another 23 restaurants will open by the end of this year, including four new Moe's Southwest Grill restaurants.
