My sister nailed it. Even though my life thus far has taken a slightly different path then my older sister, we have surprisingly arrived at the same point as far as our health is concerned. I had two young children by the age of 24. I have danced professionally and owned dance studios for years. I have had my share of surgery and moved across the country to support my children in Hollywood, also called "lala land". Couple these experiences with a tendency to constantly put others first has brought me to the point in life where my body and heart has finally said STOP! I need to review my priorities and focus on a better way of life. I really want to be able to see my children and future grandchildren grow up.

I have played with so many different eating programs, fitness programs and self help programs. Of all these it seems that the obvious has emerged. The best program is often the most simplistic, yet the hardest to follow. We are addicted to unhealthy foods, schedules, medical practices and the like. Change can be daunting and most of the time the first step is the hardest. I welcome you to take the first step with us as we share our victories and setbacks on this lifelong endeavour for balance.

We have just begun!
Lavinia

Maria's Welcome Message

Back to Basics

My sister recently said to me, "remember back when we all gave you a hard time for your eating habits and cutting out sugar, well....sorry about that, you were right." Great, now she tells me after a long stint of eating like crud.

Ever have a defining moment in your life? At the age of 40 I reached one. After over a half a decade of riding a wild roller coaster that took me through on again off again relationships, major career changes, intense PhD program, 60 plus hour work weeks, trekking back and forth across country, whirlwind courtship, out-of state wedding, more moves than you can count on one hand, living with in-laws, over training and no training, inconsistent sleep patterns, dozens of trips to the doctor and pharmacy, poor health choices, frequent sugar binges and stress, the state of my health reached an all time low. I was at a point of saturation. I was sick and tired, literally; time to hop on the road to recovery and get back to basics.

Back to basics is my effort to rid self of poor health and lifestyle choices and return to a more holistic approach of living that I adopted in my twenties. The approach consisted of good eating habits, preventative health care, balance workouts, spiritual and intellectual growth, the nurturing of a positive attitude, the reduction of stress, having no worries, and taking time to laugh, play, lounge and spend time with those I love as well as doing what I love.

The road to recovery requires a little support on the way. My sister and I are getting back to basics together -- amazing that we reached the same juncture at the same time. This site is here to share with you what we find and to be a resource for you on your road to recovery and good health.

Happy trails!
Maria
