Dr Dre Headphones – Are the “Monster Beats” Noise Cancelling Headphones by Dr Dre a Good Buy?
By John D. Emerson

You normally don’t think of style when it comes to headphones, but the Dr. Dre “Monster Beats” headphones make you think twice. But anyone can make something that looks good, right? How do they perform?

The Dr. Dre Monster Beats Headphones Low-down…

The Monster Beats Appearance-

Not often do headphones turn heads, but the sleek design of the MB’s does. The glossy black head band runs seamlessly into the ear pieces, which are inlaid with a red “b”. A metal support band is inlaid within the headband, rings thinly around the ear pieces and also contains a deep red accenting.

What About the Sound?

The Monster Beats are manufactured by the Monster Cable company, so the name is reliable. The headphones have a noise cancelling feature that many people are giving excellent reviews about on websites such as Amazon. The Dr. Dre headphones have a deep enveloping low end bass and solid mid and high range sound quality as well. Many people remark about the fact that these headphones can be cranked up to real high volume and still pump out crisp sound.

The ear cup design is being reported comfortable and easy to listen to music for extended periods of time without discomfort.

Another feature of the Monster Beats is the right earphone can be tapped on the exterior and it mutes the sound. There’s no digging in your pocket to press mute or pause, just a quick tap.

Accessories for the Monster Beats-

There are a variety of accessories to go along with the Dr. Dre headphones. These all come in the slick black and red packaging and style to compliment the headphones. Various adapters for airplanes, in home audio, and even a cable with a built-in microphone for stereo cell phones, like the iPhone.

Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 Noise Canceling Headphones – How Do They Compare to the Bose?
By John D. Emerson

The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 Noise Cancelling headphones have become a popular alternative to other big-dog brands on the market, such as Bose. What are some of the features that the Audio Technicas come with and how do they compare?

1) Over-the-ear design- The “AT” ATH-ANC7′s are an over-the-ear designed headphone, much like the Bose QC 2 model. The Bose QC 3 are the on-top of the ear design, so it is tough to compare the two on this merit. However, comfort is quite similar between the two brands.

2) Noise Canceling Function – Take a look around at some reviews on the web and you’ll notice that the AT model gets rave reviews when it comes to noise cancelling. Many people are saying that the AT’s actually cancel noise better than the Bose QC 2 model.

3) Bass Level Sound – Bass in the AT’s is reported by many to not be as low and “punchy” as the Bose noise cancelers, but are still of high quality.

4) Overall sound quality – Overall sound quality of the ATH-ANC7 is reported to be extremely good and compare closely to the Bose models. Reviews on the sound overall tend to reveal the quality of sound to be top-notch.

5) Pricing- The price of the AT ATH-ANC7 model is considerably less than the Bose models. Actually less than half of the price of the comparable QC 2 model. This proves to be a great separator between the Audio Technicas and Bose models when deciding on which to buy.

How Do the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 Noise Cancelers Stack Up Against Bose Noise Cancelers?

I took both models on numerous trips, and my findings may surprise you! Click to read all about my Audio Technica ATH-ANC7 experience.

Wireless earbud headphones are for those people who don’t like the over-the-ear design. Over the ear design can get clunky for certain types of activities, and that’s where a good pair of Ear-bud designs come in handy. Let’s discuss exactly what we mean when we are talking about wireless earbud headphones…we want the earbud technology, or earphones that go IN the ears, without the wires. That means there is going to be some bulkiness to the actual earpiece itself. However there are a few great designs out there that deliver excellent sound quality and have no wires attached. Here are a few different ways this is accomplished.

Bluetooth Wireless Earbud Headphones: The use of Bluetooth technology in these types of headphones is very common. The other types of wireless technologies out there are Radio Frequency and Infrared, so the Bluetooth is actually the cutting edge foremost technology when it comes down to it. That means these can get a bit expensive as well. Some models like the Sennheiser MX W1 wireless earbud headphones cost from $300 to $600. However, many people report excellent sound quality with these models and total- TOTAL freedom of movement with these. You simply have a receiver that attaches to your stereo or mp3 player in your pocket or at the stereo and go about your business. The range of motion from the receiver varies with different models.

Radio Frequency and Infrared Wireless Earbud Headphones: There simply isn’t enough space to pack in the radio frequency receiver into an earbud style headphone. So you’ll have a tough time trying to find a company that supplies these. Bluetooth is the present technology available for these headphones. That means they are a bit more expensive, but extremely cutting edge and deliver excellent sound with wireless freedom.

Sound blocking with wireless earbud headphones: When you go with a model of earphones that shove into your ears rather than are placed over the entire ear, you will tend to get a different sound listening experience. Make sure the earbuds come in a variety of sizes and you’ll make sure you are getting the best sound quality possible. Most quality brands will come with 3 or 4 different sizes of ear buds to place onto the headphones so you can have a customized fit. It’s not uncommon that one ear canal is larger than the other, so this seems trivial, but is extremely important.

Pricing with wireless earbud headphones: Since Bluetooth technology is the only way to go with these wireless earbuds, the pricing is particularly high at the moment. We’ll have to wait a little while longer for the pricing to get lower as time goes on and the technology becomes more main-stream. However, these can be really worth the money if you can afford it! Talk about complete freedom of movement and comfort. You can let your ears breath and be active and your headphones still won’t move. The alternative is to just get some regular ear bud headphones of course, and you’ll be paying much, much less.

Wireless mp3 headphones on the market today come in a variety of technologies, offered by many different brands. When we talk about the mp3 headphones, we are talking about those that will work with any mp3 player. These are not to be confused with many models that will only work with the iPod specifically. Having said that, good brands such as Logitech will offer models that work with any mp3 player, computer, or iPod. Just keep that in mind when you are looking at different models and brands. There are basically a couple of technologies for wireless mp3 headphones.

Bluetooth Wireless mp3 Headphones: Brands like Logitech, Intova, Sony, JVC, and others will offer a wireless mp3 headphone pair that runs on a basic Bluetooth connection. These work with any mp3 player with a basic headphone jack.

Reading deep in some product reviews reveals some major flaws in some of the brand models. For instance, the Logitech Bluetooth digital wireless headphones work with any mp3 player, iPod, or computer, however the actual design of the headphones seems to be flawed. People are complaining all over the web about the head-band cracking, getting progressively larger, or just breaking. The other complaint is they just plain stop working!

Size of the receiver and wireless mp3 headphones: This is an important consideration to take into account when purchasing a pair of wireless mp3 headphones. Pictures can be a little skewed in product descriptions, so make sure you read a few reviews about people’s experience with the receivers. Again, you’ll see people’s complaints all over the internet about not realizing the receiver was going to be so large!

MP3 Player Integrated mp3 headphones: Some models will include an MP3 player right there in the headphones themselves. Sony has a “Walkman Style” mp3 player integrated into the headphones. These are a great idea for those who don’t already own an iPod or other mp3 player. The memory will be limited compared to many other mp3 players, so keep that in mind.

Honorable Mention- The Intova H20 Man G3 mp3 player with integral headphones are kind of a cool product. This is a completely waterproof mp3 player and headset technology. So you can do your swimming laps in the pool and still rock out to your tunes. Some have complained about the snugness of fit, but others rave about how cool the product is.

Transmitter for your mp3 player: This may be something you want to look into, however it is not a pair of mp3 headphones. Instead, this is a transmitter that plugs into your mp3 player, and then transmits the signal to your headphones, home, or car stereo. These will be Bluetooth or RF (radio frequency).

The Audio-Technica ATHANC7 Noise-canceling Headphones are by far the best I have tried, and they are much less money than the Bose noise canceling QC 2′s. I personally like the over-the-ear models, so I can’t really compare them to the QC 3′s.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 have a great sound overall and are extremely comfortable, more comfortable in my opinion than the QC 2′s. HOW COMFORTABLE? I actually take trips to Italy with my wife quite often (every few months) because she is from there. The last 3 trips I had the QC 2′s and used them for the entire flights. My ears where about to fall off after each of those flights, but I still liked the headphones of course…I had my QC 2′s stolen in Italy and had to come back and get something new, so I went with the Audio-Technicas…I didn’t want to spring for another 300 bucks!

I took another trip last month to Italy with the Audio-Technica ATHANC7 Noise-canceling Headphones and they absolutely ROCKED! The actual “noise canceling” part is much better with the Audio-Technicas. I didn’t have to turn up my iPod nearly as much this time and didn’t hear anything- no babies crying, nothing!

The comfort of the headphones themselves were incredibly comfortable too…like, much more comfortable. I had these on for a loooooong time on the flight to Italy and back also.

Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend getting the Audio-Technica ATHANC7 Noise-canceling Headphones in place of buying the Bose noise-canceling headphones. You’ll save a lot of money and get a quality, comfortable set of headphones as well.

They come with a great carrying case, basically just like the Bose case I had. The sound is exceptional, maybe slightly weak in the bass range. But the overall sound quality is still very high. The headphones run on one AAA battery like the QC 2′s.

Wireless technology is rapidly becoming better with some new technologies, and improvement of older technologies. Why not use wireless headphones while on your computer!

You can free up your online ‘Skype’ or ‘Google Talk’ conversations, enjoy multimedia without cords, and enhance online or PC gaming.

There are a few different technologies of wireless computer headphones that have their strengths and weaknesses, depending on
what you want to use them for…

1) USB Infra Red Wireless Computer Headphones- These headphones are usually limited up to 15 or 20 feet, and you need “line of sight” for them to be used effectively. These may be right for you if you don’t need too much mobility from your computer.

2)USB Radio Frequency Wireless Computer Headphones- These headphones will either use the USB plug in as a receiver, or have a USB docking station that acts as the docking station. These headphones can usually get MUCH more distance reception. You can get some static, though. It is basically the same technology as a car stereo, so you may get interference from walls, etc…

3)USB Bluetooth Wireless Computer Headphones- The leading new brand of these Bluetooth Wireless headphones is Logitech. HOWEVER, they didn’t put a microphone on the headset!! Why? I’m sure they are wondering why as well. But, if you don’t want to make a Skype call or do some online gaming, then the Logitech Wireless PC Headphones are definitely recommended.

Obviously, just take a good look at the features and see if the headphones fit your needs. Watch out for…
-Reception distance
-Connection to computer
-Batteries? Or re-chargeable?
-IR (InfraRed)? RF (Radio Frequency)? Or Bluetooth/hybrid/new technology?
Price!

A Variety Of Products For A Few Different Uses…

Bluetooth Phone Headsets: With traffic laws cracking down on cell phones and driving, and not to mention it is just safer to use a hands-free device, bluetooth headsets are gaining popularity. These Bluetooth headsets are for BT compatible phones. These are extremely light-weight, pretty affordable and can be used up to 30 feet.

Bluetooth Stereo Headphones: These are placed over or in both ears just like stereo headphones we have all experienced, and are capable of wireless enjoyment usually up to 30 feet. The good brands have recharging stations for the headphones, are light-weight, have great sound and come with receivers that work with most home audio
equipment.

Bluetooth stereo/phone hybrid headphones: One such product, the “iMuffs” from Wi-Gear are wireless headphones made especially for the iPod but with a twist. They use Bluetooth technology to connect wirelessly to both your iPod and your Bluetooth enabled phone, so you can use them as a wireless headset for the cell phone. When you receive a call, the iMuffs pause the music on the iPod, ring in the headphones and allow you to speak in the integrated microphone.

If you are looking for high range of motion from the “home” audio device, then you should check out some models of wireless stereo heaphones. These can range from cheap infra-red (line of sight usage) models to high end, radio frequency models with noise cancelling up to 300 feet range!

Have More Fun With Cordless Freedom…

Want to take advantage of full volume gaming without disturbing others around you? Gaming headsets are where its at. Pump up the volume without disturbing friends, family or neighbors. Hear every nuance of the game – from an opponent sneaking up behind you to the thrill of destroying your objective in a massive firefight. Pro gamers have been using gaming headphones for a competitive advantage for years.

There are a few different kinds of gaming headphones.

One-ear cover plus microphone- Good for those who must hear the outside world as well as the game. Wife calling? Mom? The baby crying? (stop playing Warcraft and feed it!)

Two-ear cover plus microphone- These are essential for the true gamer who wants to get into the game. Most come with USB cables, anywhere from 5 to 15 feet.

Surround Sound Dolby Digital 5.1- These headphones can really deliver the true surround sound experience right there on your ears. Equalizer software comes with these headphones and lets you tweak effects- such as delays to create a sense of space, “rumble” effects for the bass, direction modification of sound, etc…

Wireless Gaming Headsets- There are many options out there. There are the RF Headphones, Infrared and Bluetooth. I like the USB connecting options that have rechargeable batteries with docking stations- Such as the Creative Labs HS-1200.

Make an informed decision with the connection to the computer in mind! Are the headsets USB connected? Or a difficult array of connectors and cables (difficult for some, you know who you are)?

Professional Headphones: When Quality is Top Priority…

Professional Headphones are for the people who make their living with sound, or simply those who can’t settle for anything less than the best.

Often DJ’s, Drummers, Singers, Guitarists, Bassists, cameramen and sound engineers need to have extreme sound isolation from the outside world and have perfect crisp sound inside their headphones to do their job their best. That’s where these professional headphones earn their high price tag.

These headphones have advanced diaphragm systems that eliminate distorted sound and can be hooked directly into a very high quality hi fi system.

Professional Headphones go Cordless: Now audio professionals have cordless choices. Sennheiser, Sony, JVC, and Acoustic Research are some of the brands at the forefront of technology. You can expect to pay a heftier price for a set of professional wireless headphones, anywhere from $50 to $300 and up.

What a great way to go for the professional though…Cordless Professional Headphones are a must. Drummers, DJ’s, cameramen and other pros need their freedom of movement along with the top notch sound quality and isolation from the external environment. The last thing you need is another cord to worry about!

Check out a good headphones review site for side by side comparisons of features. Make sure to choose the features that are most important to you. Some may boast a long range of motion, only to skimp on surround sound abilities and compatibility with certain input sources.

Gamers! Unplug yourself! Gaming headsets are going wireless as well.
There is a nice variety out there to choose from.
