I was down at Red Bull Music Academy headquarters in London last night, as I heard they had free beer, Strada pizza and a table tennis table. Sold! Luckily they also were doing a little promo evening for the imminent Culture Clash party (check the link for details- it’s pretty awesome) and I knew that Reggae and Soul expert Pete Reilly from the world-famous Soul Jazz Records and legendary 100% Dynamite parties would be present. So I took a break from kicking everyone’s ass on said table tennis table (I’m thinking of going pro) and cornered Pete for a quick interview.

I’ve recently discovered that you know your blog is gaining traction not when you get over a certain amount of hits per month or whatever, but when you start getting sent cool shit. By cool shit I don’t mean some lame promo CD (I get sent A LOT of those) but stuff that you might actually part duckets for in real life.

Out of all the crap I was sent in the last couple of weeks these gems stood out: this awesome, ultra-limited Junior Boys Own T Shirt hand printed by Dave Little in collaboration with Berlin-based Firmament. Thanks to Mr Adrian Darby at Moving Music Management for this act of extreme generosity.

Music-wise, it’s got to be this VERY nice (I love both sides) Shrinkwrap 10″ on Perfect 10 Records and this this hand dedicated Seahawks (firm favourites of mine) ‘Into Night’ 12″ on Captains Log. Thankyou one and all. Next stop: Payola (ha ha?)!

I feel like such a darned hypocrite when it comes to Theo Parrish, the remixer of this record (see my rant about Billy Love for some clarification). I’ve thought him overrated for so long, yet now I think he’s a genius. Inconsistent much? Still, I continue to think his early records are crappy, but I think his recent efforts are totally phenomenal. This is no different. Sure he’s working with some gorgeous parts, but his production is so deft, so FUNKY, so subtle that I found it very hard not to listen with my mouth agape and a look of euphoric disbelief on my face.

I paid seventeen quid for this Japan-only twelve, but I was never in any doubt that it was essential. Buy buy buy.

This month I thought I’d continue my trend away from DJ’s and producers (don’t worry, they’ll be back) and towards the unsung heroes of the music industry world: the visual artists, industry heads and manufacturers.

Roy Matthews is a legend in the field of vinyl record production, an engineer who’s spirited passion for vinyl is literally mapped into the tireless, steaming presses that produce the finest records in the UK at Vinyl Factory, the ex EMI pressing plant just outside London.

Roy’s been working in his field for 45 years; it’s probably fair to say that what the man doesn’t know about vinyl production isn’t worth knowing. Here we talk about what makes a great pressing, Roy dispenses some great advice to young label upstarts and I get a tour of the factory. Enjoy!

If you live in London and haven’t been to Caravan in Exmouth Market, you are without a doubt missing a trick. Caravan is a restaurant headed up by Kiwi Miles Kirby, who was chef at The Providores & Tapa Room in Marylebone for the last six years. In other words it’s pretty hot.

Food isn’t the only wonderful thing about this place though; the coffee and drinks are incredible. I’m a martini fanatic, and the expertly made creation I was made at Caravan is the best I’ve ever had (and bizarrely inexpensive too).

So subsequently when they asked me if I’d like to come and play a late afternoon and evening session of Balearic goodness, I leapt at it. They’ve installed a brand new top draw Martin Audio system as well, so the sonics will be pristine and never so loud that it interferes with your food.

I’m kicking it off at 5pm so come down, say hello and relax in the sun (you can sit outside!) with your favourite concoction.

I’ll be posting some of my sets as time goes on (for those of you who aren’t in London), so keep ‘em peeled.

Yes, it’s competition time again at Heads Down (about bloody time) and I’ve got a stone cold killer for you.

I’ve got two tickets to the amazing Vintage At Goodwood Festival this weekend (13-15 of August). The festival has an AMAZING line up of DJs, as well as events pertaining to fashion, film and art. I have to go to Poland for a wedding so I can’t go (damn it!), but you can.

Check out the DJ line-up: Andrew Weatherall, A Guy Called Gerald, Ashley Beedle, Chris Hill, Chris Sullivan, Colin Curtis, Danny Rampling, David Holmes, Disco Bloodbath, Don Letts, Dr Bob Jones, George Power, Graeme Park, Greg Wilson, Horse Meat Disco, Ian Dewhirst, Idjut Boys, Jay Strongman, Jazzie B, Jeffrey Hinton, Joey Negro, Keb Darge, Lascelle Lascelles, Les Spaine, Low Life, Noel Watson, Norman Jay, Optimo, Princess Julia, Stevie Kotey, Unabombers, Winston Hazel- unbelievable!

All you need to do to win is give me three artist aliases for Mr Andrew Weatherall. Piece of cake really…

Entries must be in by midday tomorrow (Wednesday), whereby I will draw the winner from my spaghetti strainer (fact!).

Check out their website here and this little video of Greg Wilson talking about his Goodwood Roller Disco:

Dave Little is a graphic art legend. In fact I think this Newcastle lad is well on his way to becoming an ART legend, full stop! His work for Bomb The Bass, S\’Express, The Aloof and Junior Boys Own is seminal and timeless.

He’s recently drawn the cover for the new edition of X-Ray magazine (see above), the prestigious fashion industry magazine from Berlin. It’s based it on an idea by Grayson Perry who in turn referenced an amazing 10th Century painting called the Map Of Ebstorf.

I recently commissioned Mr Little to design a logo for Gangs Of Rome and Heads Down Records. While I was round at his gaff I pulled out my flip camera and subjected him to a quick interrogation for y’all. I’m not just about the DJ’s, don’t you know…
