Here's Something to Cheer You.

If you're on a gluten free diet and feeling it's all a bit of a drama and a deprivation, here's something to help you stay on track. (I need it too.)

Dr Mercola has just reported that recent research has been showing an overlap between the psychological and behavioral symptoms of ADHD and those of coeliac disease. On top of that is a new study which found people with ADHD who tested positive for celiac disease improved significantly after following a gluten-free diet for at least six months.

Dr Mercola states:

It may sound strange to you that eating a grain that wreaks havoc on your gut would manifest as symptoms related to your brain, rather than your digestion, but grains are inherently pro-inflammatory and will worsen any condition that has chronic inflammation at its root -- and not just inflammation in your gut, but anywhere in your body. Chronic inflammation in your body can wreak havoc in your brain, and the importance of reducing inflammation when dealing with mental health issues is well known. It is very common for people to experience a wide variety of mental health and emotional improvements upon eliminating gluten from their diet.
And here's another little gem of information:

Wheat also contains high amounts of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), a glycoprotein classified as a lectin, which is largely responsible for many of wheat's ill effects. Other grains high in lectins include rice, spelt, and rye. Interestingly enough, the highest amounts of WGA is found in whole wheat, including its sprouted form, which is touted as being the most healthful form of all.
So don't look upon your gluten-free diet as the worst thing anyone should have to endure - healthwise it may be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Go check out this information on the Contribution of Gluten to ADHD.

What bugs me is that people are put on dangerous anti-inflammatory drugs for these conditions, when there ARE harmless alternatives available - like dietary measures.

"My people suffer from lack of knowledge."

Something made me google 'weak digestion' this afternoon, and I found the website of Dr John Douillard at LifeSpa.com - specifically his articles and videos on Surprising Symptoms of Poor Digestion .

I must say looking at his list of symptoms of poor digestion, I was mentally ticking off many of them, which drove me to keep reading and to watch his videos. I won't try to abbreviate what he says here, but simply say that his approach to the reasons behind weak digestion, and his method for curing it, are extremely logical and persuasive - and full of common-sense and inspiration.

Though he does say many of us would be on a more healthy diet if we eliminate some of the most allergenic foods, like gluten, dairy, soy and a few others, his argument is that rather than fighting a rearguard action to deal with poor digestion by eliminating problem foods, we need to understand the reasons why our body has turned down the digestive fire. Then we can take steps to get it burning brightly again.

In other words, don't just treat the symptoms - fix up the problem itself.

I won't go into further detail, but simply flag this very valuable resource. I myself am going to put into practice the step-by-step procedures he lays down for getting one's digestion back to normal.

And as I continue with this blog, I'll be reporting on my own progress with his How to Turn Up the Digestive Furnace procedure. If anyone else out there decides to do the same, please share your experiences with us too.

Stay tuned!

You spend from six to nine hours every night with your face in close proximity to your mattress, breathing in these chemicals. Your children spend even longer sleeping, with their faces even closer to the mattress surface. And if your children jump on the bed, or you bounce on your mattress, even more of these toxins can be released into the air. For this reason, look for a chemical-free, organic or 100% wool mattress for your child.

As for the rest of the house, PBDEs are widespread in:

Carpets

Textiles

Polyurethane foam furnishings

Electronics and plastics

Motor vehicles

They outgas into your home regularly and are commonly found in household dust, where they can be inhaled. Again, since they are persistent environmental pollutants, PBDEs are also found in various foods, including wild fish and the most "pure" food of all, breast milk.

For those of us looking for answers, here it is - "Look for a chemical-free, organic or 100% wool mattress for your child". And I would add to that - any members of your family who are specially at risk. Plus make it your aim to get your whole family off sleeping on toxic mattresses as soon as possible.

So you say to me, "Why wool?"

And living in New Zealand, 'OF COURSE' I would be in favor of wool. Well, there's more to it than that. Here's a few reasons 'why' wool:

Wool is 100% natural (provided no-one's 'improved' it by adding any man-made fibres, chemicals etc);

Wool resists fire - wool does not catch fire or burn readily;

Wool is the warmest fibre you can have close to you. As a long-term high-country walker, I know that the best thing you can have next to your skin in bad weather is 100% wool, because even if it gets soaking wet in really cold conditions, it will keep you warm.

Although people with sensitive skins may find wool next to the skin a bit 'scratchy' (and this is usually due to an allergic condition NOT caused by the wool itself), once it has been properly processed (as in 'chemical-free') and made into a mattress, you won't have the actual wool next to your skin.

Do more than just think about it.

Take Control - and have a great day!

I hadn't been aware of a plastic taste, but then our taste buds get used to all sorts of things. The new taste is certainly milder and nicer, though.

Why Not Plastic?

My distrust of plastic when combined with heat and foods goes back to a family experience many years ago. I was at college, and my parents happened to be working quite close to each other, so they'd meet and have lunch together. My mother would take along a flask of hot tea and some cups.

A little while after they started doing this, my father developed a very sore mouth. It went on for a while and though they tried a few things to get rid of it, it wouldn't go away. Then it dawned on them that the cups they were using at lunchtime were plastic. My mother threw them out, got some cheap glass cups, and the mouth healed up a treat.

It will be interesting to see if I can identify any changes in myself as I continue using this jug. Plastic is made from petroleum and I've had a problem with petroleum for years - another of my sensitivity issues due to the systemic candida. So who knows, I might have something worthwhile to report frm this experiment!

Petroleum And Estrogen

While on this topic, it's also worth pointing out that petroleum and petroleum products are all estrogen-mimicking. That is, they act in and on our bodies just like the female hormone estrogen - not something desirable for anyone, man, woman or child. These are toxic chemicals running loose in our environment. If you doubt me on this, then make sure you read
Hormone-Mimics In Plastic Water Bottles Act As Functional Estrogens on "Science Daily".

The authors conclude: “We must have identified just the tip of the iceberg in that plastic packaging may be a major source of xenohormone* contamination of many other edibles. Our findings provide an insight into potential exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals due to unexpected sources of contamination.”

That's just one instance, and you can soon google up some more.

Take Control - and have a great day!

If you'd like to see a very small taste of what's involved please visit my Taketakerau Project on the Behance Professional Network (which I'll update with more pictures once the book is published). AND - if you like what you see, there's a neat blue button at the bottom that you can click anonymously - just to give me a 'thumbs up' for all my hard work!

Back to the point of this post. It's no good taking charge of your food if you don't take charge of things in your immediate environment that can harm you. I got a very interesting email from Dr Mercola this morning that's going to send me out today on a mission I've had in mind for a few months but not yet got down to - searching out a new, non-plastic electric jug for my kitchen.

Toxic Mattresses

The article I'm talking about isn't just about electric jugs - there's a whole lot more to it than that, including your mattress. It has been estimated that 97% of Americans have significant levels of a toxic chemical group called PBDEs in their blood. It can alter calcium signalling in your brain which affects learning and memory. It's found in 80% of 12 common household products.

My old mattress suddenly starts to look more appealing! At least it's not made of polyurethane foam... Go check out The Mattress That Plays Havoc With Your Hormones. Especially if you have kids, if you're pregnant or if your partner is pregnant or even if you care for an elderly person.

And give a thought to that plastic hot water jug. Heat and plastic are not good together. How much hot water from that jug do you put into yourself every day?

Take Control - and have a great day!

Sadly, this food has come to be very much underestimated in today's Western culture.

Strength and Immortality : Sesame in Early Cultures

The cultivation of sesame seeds goes back to the earliest cultures in Africa, India and the Middle East. The mighty Assyrian nation that began about 5000 BC and had its heyday in the Tigris / Euphrates valleys between 2400 and 612 BC, esteemed sesame so highly that in their legends, they told of their gods drinking sesame wine to give them the strength to create the world.

And if the mention of 'Assyrian' has brought to mind the first line of a poem you can't quite remember, here just as an aside is the full text of Lord Byron's beautiful 'Destruction of Sennacherib'.
Sesame was held equally in respect in India. In Hindu legends and beliefs, tales are told in which sesame seeds represent a symbol of immortality. In many parts of India, sesame seed was and is a highly esteemed offering to their gods.

Strength and Endurance : Sesame in the Mediterranean

Cultivation of the seed spread to the Mediterranean - Egypt, Israel and Turkey especially. Greek and Roman armies were issued with bags of sesame seeds as iron rations for the soldiers, which tells us a great deal about the value of this seed. These guys were not sitting in a war room pushing buttons to fire off rockets at the foe - they were forced marching over hundreds of miles of gruelling terrain, followed by fierce hand-to-hand fighting on the ground.

In the first century AD Dioscorides the Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist authored a 5-volume encyclopedia on herbal medicine and related medicinal substances - a pharmacopeia. This book was in circulation and widely read for well over a thousand years.

The above illustration is from the Vienna Dioscorides, a manuscript made in about 515 AD for the Byzantine princess Juliana Anicia, daughter of Emperor Anicius Olybrius, and now held in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Originally created as a luxury copy, there is evidence that in later centuries it was used daily as a hospital textbook - interesting. It includes some annotations by hand in Arabic - see the photo. (Vienna Dioscorides on Wikipedia)

Dioscorides shows us that sesame was still highly valued in his day, commenting that it "doth discuss (ie deal with) the griefs of the colon" and that "the herb soaked in wine heals pains of the head that come by heat." At least two common health problems here : constipation and headaches. I can't help wondering if 'pains of the head that come by heat' refers to migraines and / or hangovers. And 'griefs of the colon'? It's plural - many bowel maladies, from diverticulitis to irritable bowel or ibs might be comprised in that.

Both the Egyptians and the Jews included sesame in their baking ingredients, customarily adding sesame seeds to their flour in the preparation of dough. And you can bet that wasn't just a pinch sprinkled on the top. As you can see from my Extremely Busy Solo Woman's Biscuit / Cookie Recipe sesame when ground lends itself well to the formation of a dough - and one that contains NO GLUTEN, moreover.

Sesame in the Far East and America

In very early times the cultivation and use of sesame seeds also spread to China, Korea and Japan, where their use in cuisine is common. Finally, sesame was probably brought into 17th century colonial America by West African slaves, and its cultivation and use is now common in the Caribbean and Mexico.

What Are We Missing About Sesame?

Oh dear - in most western cuisine today we still adhere to the 'decorative' and 'crunchy, nutty flavor' concepts, in preference to understanding the value of the plant for our health. Is that decadent or what?

Here is my point: These uses and attributes of the sesame seed go back into antiquity. They were clearly inherent in the plant from the beginning. They were recognized in many nations out of practical living experience over a period of about 7 millennia - not cooked up in a laboratory over the last 200 years.

To improve our health and make us more resistant to disease, shouldn't we be looking to the practical experience of our forefathers rather than the fast food and pharmaceutical industries? I think so.

In that time I consulted numerous doctors and was put through a heap of tests : a thyroid test (fatigue), barium meal tests, barium enema tests, liver and gallbladder tests, a bilharzia test (yes! - fatigue again).

I had pain in my stomach, so finally I nearly had an endoscopy. That was aborted by the specialist at the last minute, complete with an abusive "dress-down" standing in a hospital corridor, to boot. In effect, the medical profession told me it was all in my head - insult on top of injury.

In all that time, I kept asking the doctors if there were any foods I should avoid, mainly because my own self-experimentation was leading me to believe that some foods affected me worse than others. And in all that time, the standard answer was, "Nah, as long as you are getting an all-round diet, that's fine."

I had pretty much given up on the medical profession, and was researching and experimenting with dietary restrictions forced on me by the realities of my condition - whatever it might be.

Then by chance as Regional Solicitor for the ACC in Hamilton, I conducted a review hearing about a lady denied cover for an illness contracted while picking a bed of asparagus contaminated with an endectocide spray. I was impressed by the knowledge and open-minded approach of the doctor who gave evidence on her behalf.

The result was the candida diagnosis, and the discovery that I was allergic to 35 different foods (about which, more later) - no doubt because my condition had persisted so long. The doctor told me I could be very close to having ME, and gave me some reading materials on that health problem, too.

At least candida is now recognized by the medical profession generally, and in some cases it's being recognized that one of the causes is the use of antibiotics. About time too.

But in all those years of struggle and search, not one doctor had anything to offer on the issue of diet and food, which as I'll explain later, is a crucial plank in getting rid of any candida infection, be it oral, vaginal or systemic.

That to me is a travesty when you remember that the original father of medicine, the Greek physician Hippocrates (ca. 460 BC – ca. 370 BC) said “Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food “.

Wikipedia has this to say about Hippocrates :

Hippocrates is credited with being the first person to believe that diseases were caused naturally and not as a result of superstition, and gods. Hippocrates was credited by the disciples of Pythagoras with allying philosophy and medicine. He separated the discipline of medicine from religion, believing and arguing that disease was not a punishment inflicted by the gods but rather the product of environmental factors, diet, and living habits. [my emphasis]

Well, how far have we come? Western medicine is only one medical discipline that would say it doesn't believe in superstition and 'gods'. But for years now it has been following the equally deadly gods of the pharmaceutical industry.

We're in a Dark Age of science and medicine when more emphasis is placed on administering drugs than on looking to Hippocrates' wisdom.

But this is also the Information Age, when people with internet access can do their own research and make their own informed decisions. This needs to happen, and the word needs to get out to those who don't have the internet, and probably need it most.

That to me (and I'm not an American) is why Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" and other health initiatives are so important.

Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative against childhood obesity had come under fire from Sarah Palin. While in the USA, Oliver was asked what he thought about Palin's attitude. Well, ask a silly question if you like, but if you are talking to a Brit - please expect to get an honest answer, not a sugar-coated one.

Jamie put Palin in the same bag as "The Fruit Loop" - a US breakfast cereal packed with processed grains and made attractive to children by the addition of sugar, salt, fruit flavors and coloring.

Of course the conservatives got up in arms.

It's another example of American politics getting in the way of common sense. Some stupid statements were made in the Republican attack on the White House's initiative, like "Get away from my French Fries, Mrs Obama!" and "If we are supposed to eat fruits, berries and tree bark, show us how." Typical grandstanding, political garbage.

And here's some more: Sarah Palin claimed the First Lady "is telling us she cannot trust parents to make decisions for their own children, for their own families, on what we should eat."

Well, as I've already noted, "My people are destroyed by lack of knowledge". For many years, REAL nutrition has been ignored by the medical profession (thanks to the pharmaceutical companies whose input of $$ into the medical schools has ensured that some important issues are never taught). See my own experience with Doctors, the Medical Profession and Diet.

REAL nutrition has been ignored by governments, food-producing cartels and chemical companies manufacturing so-called fertilizers and other agricultural chemical products. So we end up with hybridized foods, with food additives, drugs, herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers that make us sick, and we are expected to turn to the pharmaceutical companies for more drugs to make us well?? Come on!!!

No wonder many people cannot make the right decisions about what to feed their children and their families - AND THEY ARE NOT TO BLAME. There are many folks who would cry, "Why didn't the government ever tell us?" Well, someone with a bit of profile is telling you now - at last.

We are all confronted by a barrage of marketing and publicity from companies whose only interest in what they sell is to make as much money out of it as possible. White sugar is the number 1 worst "food" on the planet. Food manufacturers throw it into anything and everything to make their product appealing - and extra big gobs into anything designed to appeal to children. And where do we think the epidemic of childhood obesity, ADD, hyperactivity and child and teenage behavior problems is coming from?

Wake up America. Forget your childish political infighting and look at the REAL issues at stake here. Counterfeit foods, fertilizers and health measures are destroying us and costing governments (ie the taxpayer) a mint. And, as for health : what sort of inheritance are the Republicans trying to foist onto their kids?

Kudos to Michelle Obama for taking a stand. The more Americans who follow her lead and learn how to make informed decisions for their family's health, the better.

Prevention Magazine ran a series of articles about sunflower seeds (Helianthus annuus). One of them started off by saying that if you were stranded on a desert island and the only food you had was sunflower seeds, you would be fortunate, because of the many healthful elements they contain. I've always remembered that.

Though in my Extremely Busy Solo Woman's Biscuit / Cookie Recipe sunflower seeds are cooked, they are of course even better eaten raw. In fact, Prevention had another insight to share, and it was this. According to a friendly doctor, the secret of staying young and vital all your life is :

"Every day eat something which, if put into the ground, will grow."

If you think about that, most things we eat would definitely not grow if put into the ground. That attribute is reserved for seeds - and sunflower seeds are one of the best. Here's a summary of what they contain:

Protein (24%) This is complete protein - a rare find in non-animal foods - with an excellent balance of the 9 essential amino acids. In comparison with eggs, sunflower seeds have just about the same amount of lysine and methionine, and even higher levels of all the other essential amino acids. In today's world when the price of meat is high and questions are being asked about the connection between over-consumption of meat and cancer, it's good to know that at least one non-animal food can foot it with the best.

Essential Fatty Acids (46%) - particularly linoleic acid - required for smooth skin and healthy hair, strength of connective tissue, reproductive processes, and to mobilize cholesterol.

Vitamin E - for heart health, preventing blood clotting, and for reproductive processes.

Vitamin A - for complexion, eyesight and the integrity of mucous membranes. It appears the vitamin A content of sunflower seeds is particularly well utilized - cattle when fed on sunflower seed cake (the remains from oil extraction) produce a higher level of vitamin A in their milk than when they are fed on other feeds.

Vitamin D - again a very good natural source, probably because the sunflower keeps its face turned towards the sun. On top of that, this natural source also contains a bunch of minerals needed to activate the vitamin D. Isn't this far preferable to taking your D in capsule form?

Vitamin Bs - especially thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and B6. More B Vitemins than are found in wheatgerm, in fact. THAT's useful information for people suffering from gluten intolerance or coeliac disease!

Minerals - zinc for heart and prostate health; magnesium for strong blood vessels, bones and nerves; potassium for heart function; phosphorus and iron. And for anyone concerned about sodium intake, sunflower seeds are low in salt.

Enzymes - when eaten uncooked, sunflower seeds provide an excellent source of enzymes - something most people living on cooked foods are drastically lacking.

Fibre - essential for the bowel, heart health and cholesterol management. They are in fact better for us than wheat bran : another good tip for coelic sufferers and people who are allergic to grains.

I should add that the elements stored in this powerhouse seed are also known for their capacity to promote a sense of well-being. These gluten-free seeds have what it takes to add a spark to your day - and there are NO SIDE EFFECTS.

So instead of rushing off to get your fix of fast foods (and all the nasties that go with it), make sure you have sunflower seeds in your pantry, and take some to work with you every day. Your body will thank you for it. So will your bank balance!
It all started as a teenager when a ship's doctor "threw the book" of antibiotics at me and unwittingly killed off all the good bugs in my system as well as all the bad ones.

It took me 26 years of trying to get a diagnosis and being told repeatedly that it was all in my head before a more savvy than usual doctor diagnosed me as having candida rampant in my gut. He also found I was allergic to 35 different foods - a lot of them plain ordinary fare like milk (cows' and goats'), grains, some veggies, and of course the expected food additives, cigarette smoke, petroleum and suchlike.

A course of nystatin (Nilstat) helped, but did not fix the problem and after avoiding a lot of foods for awhile I went back to eating fairly normally, but without sugar, and battled on.

I'm now at the point where I realise I just have to nail this thing before it nails me - about which, more in another post. But because living gluten-free or grain-free can be extremely hard at times, I thought I'd share my crazy biscuit / cookie recipe born out of sheer desperation. Before you turn your nose up at it totally, remember as well as grains I am also unable to eat sugar or other natural sweeteners, and I'll say right now that artificial sweeteners are only fit for the rubbish bin. If you doubt me, go to http://mercola.com/ and search the term.

So here it is - and because of all the other stuff I do it's called

"The Extremely Busy Solo Woman's Biscuit / Cookie Recipe"

Ingredients:
2 cups sunflower seeds, ground (coffee grinder)
2 cups sesame seeds, ground (ditto)
1 tsp sea salt
hot water to mix : 1.5 - 2 cups

Method:
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C or 350 deg F.

In a bowl thoroughly mix together the seeds and salt. Add the water a little at a time and mix as you go. You don't want to get the mix wet because you can't just chuck in some flour to fix it. Gradually add and mix enough water to let you fold and knead the stuff, then shape it into a round mass. It shouldn't be too sloppy - surprisingly, if you get it right, it will just about hold together.

Let it sit while you grease a big flat baking tray. I use olive oil - I refuse to use the usual polyunsaturated garbage. Put your mix onto the tray and with damp hands gradually flatten it out. Mine is usually 4-5mm thick.

Place in the preheated oven and cook for 20 mins. Keep an eye on it the first time you cook this recipe - ovens vary and your time might be different. I have a fan-heated oven, so it burns less than some ovens.

Take it out of the oven and before it cools release it from the tray - I have a very long knife I use for this. Once cooled, break it into pieces by hand and store in a tin or lunchbox. It's a lot quicker this way than messing around with cookie cutters - which would not work with this mix. Or you can score it into squares with a sharp knife before you bake it.

Get creative. There are some great things you can add for variation, depending on your own tastes - herbs like oregano, cumin or cinnamon, coconut cream (yum!) or garlic paste. Go wild and experiment with 'sweet' and 'savory' - just keep off the grains and sugars! The great thing is that sunflower and sesame seeds are exceptionally good for you - and I'll explain that in later posts.

Because this is a bit more messy to handle than a flour mix, I have an old kitchen tool I use for the whole process from mixing the seeds to adding the water. I love using things for purposes other than the intended - it does a great job, too! Haha!!

Enjoy.
Here's just one tiny example from history:

My mother, who before her marriage was in charge of the central accounting of a substantial bakery company in the UK, told me many times how the bosses came home from a conference announcing a "new development" in the British (and no doubt worldwide) baking industry. The flour milling companies were going to produce a new wonder-product - white flour.

Why? "Because the housewife likes the clean white look," they said. Hmmm - one wonders. Sounds like justification to me.

The result was one of the most denatured foodstuffs on the planet, stripped of its bran and wheatgerm (including virtually all the nutrients in the grain, plus essential dietary roughage), and treated with a slew of cheap, toxic chemicals. The result? An epidemic of constipation and degenerative diseases - and no-one knew why.

White flour of course is now "enriched", which means it has a very few, miserly nutrients added back into it because the authorities finally discovered how sick-making it really was in its original form.

White flour is still with us, it is still a travesty - and we still have an epidemic of degenerative disease. Think hard how much of it people consume in a day, from bagels and croissants to toast, sandwiches, pies, pastries, cakes, cookies, noodles, sauces, pasta and pizza - and that's only the obvious. It is the staple of the western fast-food industry, and a staple in most western home kitchens.

I'm not selling anything. I'm not saying you need to buy anything. I'm suggesting you get some information about how to look after yourself and your family. Take on some responsibility and find out how to live healthier and cheaper in these troubled times.

Stay with me - more to come ...
Over the last 100 years, our farming practices and chemical fertilizers have drastically impoverished the soils we rely on to put essential nutrients into our bodies.

This isn't pie-in-the-sky. It was proved and is on record in the minutes and the associated soil testing results of two International Soil Science Symposiums. Have you noticed how all those 'wonder juices' come from untouched-by-man environments where the soils are still nutrient-rich? It's ironic that some countries are busy right now chopping those ecosystems down to turn them into 'production'.

Our food processing is no longer a family activity - it's now in corporate hands. And corporate bosses need to maximize profits so they get their coveted bonuses. Result? Food denatured even more in the production process. Food laced with toxic chemicals to keep it from spoiling on the shelf. Food processed in ways that make it a source of cancer and poisons.

We have a case very much in point right now here in New Zealand. Our dairy industry giant Fonterra, which has taken over control of our dairy production and which appears to have shaped itself along typical "corporate" lines, is now embroiled in a scandal about milk produced by Sanlu, its JV partner in China. Fonterra owns a 43% stake in the Chinese company, which produced and distributed milk containing melamine - a toxic chemical that has the effect of increasing protein content in the milk.

Six babies died and more than 290,000 were seriously harmed by drinking this contaminated milk.

The scandal has been breaking for about 6 months now, with many questions being asked about who actually advised whom, and what advice was given. Questions are also being asked about the slowness of recall by Chinese authorities of the tainted product. As the media sources below point out, Fonterra appears to have been "naive" in its dealings with the overseas company.

The prospect of substantial profits probably played a large part in that naivety.

Think about this:

Healthcare is a huge drain on a nation's finances - and who pays? The taxpayer. Well, now western governments are opting out of providing health service dollars, and so the lower income taxpayer suffers again. You and I. Surely it's in our interests to know WHY people get sick?

Health Insurance companies are growing fat because thousands of people look to them, not just for help in an emergency, but to pay up when the chickens of bad lifestyle choices come home to roost in the form of heart problems, diabetes, cancer and the rest. We regard these diseases as an inescapable part of "getting old". What rot! They are an inescapable result of wrong food, drink and lifestyle choices, for the most part, and relying on insurance to pick up the tab for that is costing us dearly.

It's not by chance the highest incidence of degenerative disease is in western countries with their technology and fast-food mentality. Just watch the effects as we pass the "benefits" of our culture on to countries where poorer people are still living a simple lifestyle. It's happening already.

Lastly, the western world's reliance on artificial chemicals burdens the planet with unnatural pollutants - not only the obvious factory waste, petroleum products and superphos run-off but also human and animal waste as we - and our pets and livestock - excrete such chemicals as pain-killers, blood-thinners, artificial oestrogens, growth hormones and endectocides into the environment.

So we grapple with greenhouse gases, costly mop-ups, marine and freshwater pollution, and carbon credits. And who pays? You and I.
It has also encouraged us in the mentality that someone else, by handing out a pill, can save us from the effects of what we choose to put into our mouths.

Oooh but... We don't want to be responsible for the food and lifestyle choices we make. It would be much more comfortable and enjoyable to carry on the way we are and have someone else fix our problems.

SO - we run to the doctor, we run to the health store, and we say "Fix me please!" The cash-register rings, and we rush off, drugs or remedy in hand, expecting to carry on as usual and see an improvement in our condition.

Because drugs were created to be fast-acting, we've also come to expect fast results from remedies of all kinds, and if they don't come, we go back to try something else... And the cash-register rings again.

What nonesense is this? Think about it for a moment: we have a lifetime of poor choices behind us (many of them not ours), and we expect it fixed at the drop of a hat? Have you ever heard of the man who went for open-heart surgery that was 100% successful, yet a couple of years later he was beginning to suffer from the same problem. How come?

Because he went right on doing what he had always done, and as we all know, doing that produces the same results as we've always had...

To be continued। -
Our correct blood pH is 7.4 - very slightly on the alkaline side of neutral. This is how we were designed to function and our body is forever striving to maintain that pH level.

It is important to understand that the pH thing is not just a piece of fancy chemistry we don’t need to worry too much about. Here are just three simple reasons why:

If our body pH sinks below 4.0. we die.

Bacteria, viruses, fungi and all disease-producing organisms flourish in an acidic medium and die in alkaline conditions. The same is true of Cancer cells. So once our body pH starts to drop below neutral, we are opening the door for disease right there.

All the many Enzymes required for every function in our bodies will not work under acid conditions.

So if we keep our body fluids alkaline, we are setting up the first line of defence against disease. More than that, if we already have disease in our bodies, changing our body pH from acid to alkaline is the first step towards ridding ourselves of whatever disease we have.

Body pH is affected by many things - the foods we eat, the drinks we consume, stress, exposure to toxins and chemicals to name just a few. We have a measure of control over all these things - and in particular the foods and drinks we consume. So it makes sense to try and understand how different foods affect our body pH.

For example, Cola rates at 2.5 - way too low. For more information to help you understand pH balance, please read the following, on Health News

Acidity, Disease and Cancer

The 80/20 Alkaline-Acid Food Theory for Healthy Living

Table of Acid/Alkaline Values of Some Common Foods

Table of Acid/Alkaline Values of Some Common Liquids

It also makes sense to test your body pH - which will immediately show you where your body is at. You can do this by purchasing saliva pH testing paper, stocked in some health food stores and pharmacies. You need a narrow range pH paper measuring pH 4.5 to 7.5 or 8.5.Do the test about 10am - about 2 hrs after a meal and at the same time of the day every time you test. Rinse out your mouth and get a good flow of saliva. Insert the end of a paper onto your tongue for a few seconds then compare the color with the chart that comes with the pH paper.

Online sources of pH papers:
Healthtreasures.com pH papers - the second item on the page.
Wilderness Family Naturals - the wider range option is the best.

Make a list of the foods you consume regularly and check their pH values - you may be eating yourself to death literally! Think about your children also - check out the Acidity of Coca Cola and other soft drinks above! We have another source that confirms the pH of Coca Cola HERE.

Remember too that Enzymes are living substances and they require the correct pH range to enable them to function. Given the fact that our foods are most often short on enzymes anyway, it’s not a good idea to kill off those we actually do get into our bodies by providing an acid medium in your body.

For more about enzymes check out Enzymes - The Catalysts - Lack or non-functioning of enzymes leads to rapid ageing and fatigue and lays the foundation for chronic disease to develop.

Results gathered from previous experimental studies on humans had been inconsistent, reporting either positive or negative correlations, or finding no association.

The relationship between habitual coffee consumption and blood pressure was investigated in an epidemiological study of 3336 male self-defense officials aged 48-56 in Japan. Average coffee consumption over the previous year was assessed via a questionnaire.

Findings indicated an inverse association between habitual coffee intake and blood pressure that were independent of obesity, glucose intolerance, smoking and alcohol consumption.

Intake of caffeine-containing green tea was unrelated to blood pressure.

The authors also found that prograssively decreasing systolic and diastolic blood pressures matched increasing levels of coffee intake. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying mechanism of this response.

European Journal of Epidemiology 14 (1998)

Patricia
Another way to look after your heart and blood-pressure is by taking care with fats. But research has also revealed the role of aged garlic in balancing HDL and LDL in the blood.
This article comes from a piece of personal experience that I think might be worth sharing. Several years ago, I went for a thorough check-up at our local hospital, and part of the associated blood work was a cholesterol level check – something I had never had before.

When I returned for the reports, everything was fine. But one thing stood out. My doctor commented that my HDL / LDL levels were perfect – picture book, in fact. She seemed surprised, and so was I. Though I live as healthily as possible, and was certainly getting plenty of exercise at the time, it surprised me to have such a noteworthy report. I concluded that I might be fortunate in having a good HDL / LDL balance genetically.

You probably know that the balance of these two lipoproteins – high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein – is an indication of coronary health. Lipoproteins are formed in the liver by the binding of fats to proteins, to enable cholesterol to be carried in the bloodstream, which is water-based.

When too much low-density lipoprotein circulates in the blood, it allows cholesterol to build up as plaque on the arteries that feed the heart and brain, and the individual is at risk of coronary heart disease or a stroke. On the other hand, higher levels of high-density lipoprotein in the blood lower the risk of coronary heart disease, possibly by carrying cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is processed for excretion from the body.

The more LDL-cholesterol you have in your blood, the greater your risk of heart disease. The higher your level of HDL-cholesterol, the better your prognosis is.

Some time later, I was researching garlic and had bought Garlic for Health by Benjamin Lau, MD, PhD, (1988 ISBN 0-941524-32-9), which deals specifically with research on aged garlic. One of the areas he researched was the effect of aged garlic on regulating lipid metabolism. Perhaps the best way to make my point is by a brief quote from his text:

“In this part of the study, we differentiated between low-density lipoproteins, considered to be detrimental to health, and high-density lipoprotein, known to protect against heart-attack and stroke. Those taking garlic experienced an initial rise in the level of LDL and VLDL. The initial rise was followed by a significant drop beginning in the third month. As the study progressed, subjects experienced an increase in HDL (high-density lipoprotein) (see Figure 6). In other words, garlic can reduce the levels of “bad” cholesterol while increasing the levels of “good” cholesterol.” (Pp. 13-14).

Reading this gave me one of those light-bulb moments, because I regularly take aged garlic capsules, and was certainly taking them at the time I had the cholesterol level check. I was already a fan of aged garlic, for its antibacterial and antifungal effects – now it appeared there was another very good reason to take it in one’s diet.

For anyone trying to achieve a good HDL / LDL balance, exercise, weight-reduction and stopping smoking are the prescribed methods. All of these are vital to good health and should be implemented. But it’s nice to know you can support your dietary and exercise measures by taking an herb that was initially proved to work in at least 65% of cases.

What about the other 35%? This is where it gets interesting. I’ll quote Dr Lau again:

“Reviewing their dietary history, we discovered that they were heavy meat-eaters with diets consisting regularly of steak, pastries, and ice-cream, particularly during the evening meals. When we incorporated dietary modification for these individuals, lowering of lipids was then observed in those who were able to follow the recommended dietary changes. Our conclusion is that garlic should be used together with a good diet to achieve the best result.” (Pp. 15-16).

Note: In these tests, Dr Lau reported an initial “modest rise in cholesterol and triglycerides” in the first 2 months of the test as the aged garlic moved lipid deposits from the tissues, with normal serum lipid values being reached by 6 months. Be aware that this temporary result is to be expected if you have high LDL levels and are considering using aged garlic.

Patricia

HealthNews-nz.com

http://patriciahowitt.com
- - -
We had never had problems with it in my immediate family until my mom had an accident and fell down the stairs about 5 years ago (no broken bones, thank goodness). When they examined her at our local hospital they found her blood pressure was up and prescribed medication for it.

I picked up the medication from the pharmacy on the way home and once mom was settled I opened the packet. The first thing that caught my eye was a notice on the pack that said “DO NOT DISCONTINUE THIS MEDICATION”.

Alarm bells went off in my head immediately. I rang the clinic to check up and the receptionist said, “Yes, once you are on that medication you have to stay on it” - more and even louder alarm bells.

I got another appointment with the doctor and asked him if I could try to treat this naturally. He went rather red in the face, and asked me what I wanted to use. I told him I had experience in alternative remedies and I wanted to try her on Garlic and Hawthorne capsules. Rather grudgingly, he agreed to let me have a 3 months window to trial it.

Well, the upshot was that the hospital forgot about it, I put her on Garlic and Hawthorne capsules, and some six months later when a District Nurse was here we checked her blood pressure and it was found to be completly NORMAL. That would have been about 4 years before she died, and from then on, what with the visiting nurses and her admissions to hospital she had a pretty regular check kept on that blood pressure - and it remained normal until her final admission in February 2007, at which time it was “slightly elevated, but nothing to worry about.”

I have to add, that we do live on a healthy diet - for those blood pressure sufferers who are not adjusting their diet and don’t plan to, PLEASE don’t expect any kind of supplement to work a miracle. You have to also take responsibility for your eating and lifestyle habits. But if you do that, then taking the right supplements can help you greatly.

I have a friend who used to own a service station and garage. Because of the extreme black circles around her eyes, I felt concerned enough one day as I filled my tank to ask her if she had problems with her kidneys and she said yes - it was her blood pressure medication. She was in her early 50s.

Now I ask you - how many people are put on medication and kept on it for the rest of their lives - medication that causes side effects of this magnitude? It bears thinking about. I am not a doctor and I would hate to look like I am advising people, but my own mother is a case in point. At 94/95 years old whenever she went in for Respite Care for a week per month to give me a break, she was the only elderly person in our small rest home and hospital complex who was not on medication of some kind - and in most cases there was medication upon medication to stop the side effects of this or that drug. Stacks of pills. Stacks of chemicals. I used to watch the meds trolley doing its rounds and shudder. I was grateful my mother wasn’t part of it. And frankly, I’m inclined to think that’s one reason she lived as long as she did.

People actually seem to use medication as a badge of honour. “Oh yes, now they’ve got me on XXX.” Or, “They’ve just changed my medication again to YYY.” Hmmmm…

Pharmaceutical drugs are fine for emergency situations. We have much to be grateful for there. But I recently saw a video clip of some dolly-bird rep of a pharmaceutical company on US television openly stating that her company wanted everyone to know that they needed her company’s products to stay well. As if the human body requires artificial chemicals to enable it to function normally and repair itself if given half a chance. What rubbish - what arrant, arrogant, money-grubbing rubbish!

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

Patricia

HealthNews-NZ
http://patriciahowitt.com

Framed Art Prints and Posters by Patricia Howitt @ Artflakes

<b">Kunstdrucke, Leinwanddrucke, Gallery Prints und Poster</b"> von Patricia Howitt

- - -
Technorati Tags:
health, health remedies, alternative, natural, wellness, healing, disease

I am NOT a Representative or an Affiliate of ANY alternative health remedy marketing program. I am not writing this blog as a marketing ploy.

I have trialled a number of these programs in the past for myself - the products are overpriced for what they do, and in most cases the hype is unwarranted. The autoship and marketing requirements cause more stress than the product alleviates.

What I am going to be sharing here is simply information that I’ve gleaned from a lifetime in this arena, and also from 10 years as a lawyer working in the Government medico-legal field and more recently 7 years’ working sole charge part-time in a health store. I hope you find something here that will open your eyes to some at least of the truths behind how our wonderful bodies are constructed, and how to keep - or make - them well.

Patricia

HealthNews-NZ
http://patriciahowitt.com
It developed from a lifetime interest in natural health remedies, born out of 20 years grappling with a health challenge that the medical profession was unable to diagnose. Needless to say, because they could not diagnose it, in their minds it did not exist, and I went through some degrading stuff on occasions, unfortunately.

My family turned to alternative remedies to try to help me, and by the time I was finally diagnosed with a long-term systemic candida infection, I was at my wits’ end. This happened before the medical profession acknowledged the existence of candida, and I shall be forever grateful to a doctor with the insight to think outside the pharmaceutical trap that hamstrings Western medicine.

So when I came to the internet in July 1996 and started playing with websites and HTML, I was inspired to set up a website that would share what I’d learned over the years about wellness and natural health remedies with others.

This blog will be a continuation and an outreach for that site, and it will deal with many topics in the field of natural health and wellness, as it grows. I hope it helps people - with information and encouragement.

Patricia

http://patriciahowitt.com

HealthNews-NZ
