			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many adults only remember riding a bike. They gave it up as they became older. Adults can and should take advantage of bicycle riding to get some exercise. Older folks may want to ride the large tricycle with a basket on the front.</p>
<p>I remember my first bike. It was blue with a bell attached to the handlebars and when you worked the little tab back and forth with your thumb, you would hear a tinny ring. All the kids in my neighborhood had bikes, of course they were two speed bikes, stop and go, unlike the many different bikes that are available now.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t remember any of us being overweight back then. We rode bikes rather than watching some silly or violent program on TV. In fact, there was no TV, no McDonald&#8217;s, no computers, no Gameboys; the only video games we had were pictures in our heads.</p>
<p>During the daylight hours we didn&#8217;t have many sedentary games. We ran around in the yards playing imaginary games. It was great fun. At night the whole family would sit around the supper table eating and talking. The meal usually consisted of a meat, two or three vegetables, and dessert with tea or milk to drink. No one opted for bottled water, oh yeah, there was no bottled water.</p>
<p>The only time we had hamburgers was on Saturday nights, no fries. Instead of fries we had goulash. During the summer we cooked outdoors on a homemade barbecue pit made out of stone. There were no charcoal, electric, or gas grills, we used wood in the pit.</p>
<p>Some of the neighborhood kids were always invited to eat supper with us on Saturday night. We would eat on a wooden picnic table in the backyard. After supper we would play basketball or horseshoes, or some other game. We got plenty of exercise.<br />

Maybe if we had kept on doing those type of things, we would not have so many lazy and overweight people now. Get some &#8220;kids&#8221; of all ages together and go for a bike ride at least once a week. When you are riding, maybe along the way you&#8217;ll ride upon a backyard barbecue pit where you can fix some burgers the old fashion way and pitch a few horseshoes after supper.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Before fitness training, one must give importance to doing warm-up or stretching exercises to prevent accidents or to enhance the output during the training. There are also a number of precautionary measures and tips to serve as guidelines when doing fitness exercises. Here are some of them.</p>
<p>1. To increase your flexibility and to avoid injuries, stretch before and after workout. Almost everyone knows that stretching before workout prevents injuries during the exercises, but only few people know that stretching after workout, when muscles are still warm, can increase flexibility.</p>
<p>2. Hold your stretching position for more than 60 seconds to increase flexibility. While holding your position for 20 seconds is enough for warm ups, holding each position for at least 60 seconds will develop the body&#8217;s flexibility.</p>
<p>3. Do not go into a stretching position then immediately return to the relaxed position, and do it repeatedly. This is more appropriately termed as bouncing while in a position. When stretching, hold that position for several seconds, and then slowly relax. You may do this exercise repeatedly this way. Bouncing or forcing yourself into a position during stretching can strain or damage some joints or muscles.</p>
<p>4. Work slowly in increments instead of immediately proceeding to doing the hardest exercise or position.</p>
<p>5. Make sure that you have stretched or warmed up all muscle groups. For some people, even if they have strong bodies, they tend to neglect the neck when working out of stretching. Stretching the neck muscles can be as simple as placing the palm of one&#8217;s hand against the front of the head and pushing it. Then, do the same to the sides and the back of the head.<br />

6. Stretch regularly to continually increase your range of movements and your level of flexibility and strength.</p>
<p>7. Workout considering only your capabilities and not of others. Do not force yourself to do exercises that you are not yet capable of just because there are people who can do it. Increase your limits slowly. Listen to your body. There are days when your body may be too tired that you may have to consider reducing your range of motion.</p>
<p>8. Learn to rest. Rest in between sets and stations to make sure that the body has enough time to recover its energy. Also, it is advisable that you don&#8217;t work the same muscle groups consecutively for two days. The muscles grow during the period when you rest and not when you are working out.</p>
<p>9. Do aerobic exercises to strengthen your heart. Aerobic exercises are those physical activities that much oxygen for fuel. This includes cardiovascular exercises such as skipping rope, running or swimming.</p>
<p>10. Music may help you when you want to train for longer periods or to increase your intensity. You can use mp3 players, CD players or lightweight am radio receivers for this. Just make sure that you brought your headset with you so you wouldn&#8217;t disturb people who don&#8217;t prefer music while exercising.</p>
<p>Apart from preventing injuries and increasing one&#8217;s limit, it is also said that stretching is good for a tired body and also for a stressed mind and spirit.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>From relative obscurity, breast cancer has become one of the leading causes of deaths among women in the world. In 2001, about 200,000 cases of breast cancer have been reported in the United States, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in the US. It is, in fact, the most common malignancy problem that is affecting women in North America and Europe today.</p>
<p>But what is breast cancer and how do people get it?</p>
<p>Breast cancer occurs when malignant tumors in the breast grow and start to affect other tissues in the body. There is still no clear indications how tumors are created but what is often observed is that cancerous cells usually comes from ducts or glands.</p>
<p>Although women’s health organizations advise women to massage the breast daily and to feel for any lumps, it may a long time before a cancerous cell get big enough for us to feel it. By that time, it may already be too late. Doctors make use of mammograms for their diagnosis.</p>
<p>Breast at risk</p>
<p>All women are actually at risk, with the risk increasing with the presence of some risk factors that are already part of the natural cycle, for example, aging. Family history of breast cancer can also significantly affect the prognosis as heredity has been found to play a role. Women who got their periods before they were 12 years old and those who never had or had children after 30 years old are also more likely to develop breast cancer.</p>
<p>There are also risk factors that medical science can help alter such as hormonal problems through replacement therapies. Women are also advised to decrease their consumption of alcoholic drinks, exercise every day and decrease the use of birth control pills. Breastfeeding has been found to decrease the risk of breast cancer development.</p>
<p>Although there are some factors that women can avoid to prevent breast cancer from developing, cause and effect relationships between these factors and breast cancer is still debatable. For women who are already at high risk, doctors often recommend a drug called Tamoxifen, which is known to decrease the risk by as much 50 percent when taken in five years. Still, like all medications, Tamoxifen has side effects such as hot flushes, vaginal discharges and sometimes even blood clots. Taking the drug can also lead to pulmonary emobolus, stroke and uterine cancer, although these are all isolated cases.<br />
<span id="more-568"></span><br />
Another avenue that women can go to is Vitamin A, which some studies show to be effective in decreasing the risk. Still, research is still in the initial stages and nothing has been proven yet. Other things that are being linked to the breast cancer fight are phytoestrogens, which can be found in soya, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C.</p>
<p>But until something concrete is found in research, the only thing that women can do to ensure that they are safe from breast cancer is early detection. This can be done through daily self-examinations as well as annual check ups and mammogram tests. It is also important that women know the beginnings of breast cancer. Here are some of the signs that they should watch out for.</p>
<p>Lumps in the breast and in the underarms<br />
Scaling of the skin of the breast and of the nipple<br />
Redness in the skin of the breast and of the nipple<br />
Changes in the size of their breasts<br />
Discharges from the nipple</p>
<p>If these signs are observed, it is best to consult a specialist so that you can know whether you have breast cancer or not.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ice cream or yogurt? Regular or diet soda? These may not be critical decisions at your dinner table &#8211; unless you&#8217;re one of nearly 18 million Americans living with diabetes today.</p>
<p>People with diabetes face daily challenges. To remain healthy, they must monitor their blood sugar levels, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Some people also need to take insulin to stay alive.</p>
<p>In an effort to recognize champions of these challenges, Eli Lilly and Co. established the LillyforLife Achievement Award in 2002. The award celebrates the inspiring achievements of people of all ages who live with diabetes.</p>
<p>Those recognized do not have to be well known or famous for their achievements but can be everyday people who have accomplished or are working toward exceptional personal success.</p>
<p>This year, Lilly has expanded the award program to include not only people with diabetes but also anyone impacted by the condition or involved with the diabetes community.</p>
<p>Categories of submission include: patients age 18 or over; patients age 17 or under; professionals; caretakers or spouses; and journalists.</p>
<p>One person from each category will be selected by a panel of judges to receive this special award. Applicants are eligible to apply for one category. Peer or self-nominations are accepted from the public through Aug. 30, 2004.<br />

Last year, Rick Largent was honored with the first ever LillyforLife Achievement Award. Largent has been living with type 1, or insulin-dependent, diabetes for 25 years. He has faced extraordinary challenges during his life beyond diabetes. An unfortunate accident left him quadriplegic, and he later lost his 19-year-old daughter to cancer.</p>
<p>Largent neglected to control his blood sugar, putting himself at risk for diabetes-related complications. It was not until he began using an insulin pump that he started taking control of his health again.</p>
<p>Largent began traveling cross-country sharing his story and teaching others that anything is possible when diabetes is managed well. He also visited Capitol Hill in an effort to educate policymakers on the dual dilemma of diabetes and disabilities.</p>
<p>Largent&#8217;s resilience to conquer diabetes and quadriplegia represents the kind of spirit the LillyforLife Achievement Award stands for. As many who live with diabetes know, if the disease is managed, there&#8217;s no reason you can&#8217;t achieve your goals.</p>

The first column on the left side of the page will contain the hours in the day. The second column down the middle of the page will be a list of the foods eaten that day. And the third column on the right side of the page will list the symptoms (headaches) that you experience.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how the food diary works: if you had an orange, cereal and milk for breakfast at 8 AM you would write &#8220;orange, cereal, milk&#8221; in the middle (food) column directly to the right of 8 AM in the left (time) column. Make a note of everything that you eat on this list and at what time you ate them.</p>
<p>Next, whenever you experience a migraine headache write &#8220;migraine headache&#8221; or &#8220;headache&#8221; in the right (symptoms) column that corresponds with the time (in the left column) your headache began. For example, if you started feeling pain from one of your migraine headaches at 2 PM you would write &#8220;headache&#8221; in the right (symptoms) column directly across from 2 PM in the left (time) column.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve had enough time to experience a few migraine headaches you will be able to examine your food diary to determine which foods you ate shortly before you began experiencing your pain. For example, if you had 3 migraine headaches over a one-month period, and you had milk shortly before each of the migraine attacks, milk may be the culprit. It may take a few weeks or even a few months to come to any conclusions, but over time, by figuring out which foods or ingredients in these foods, are causing your pain, you will be able to eliminate these ingredients and relieve your pain caused by these foods.</p>
<p>Probably the most common cause of headaches is just plain old stress. People who experience tension in their lives can get headaches from their increased tension. Stress can be caused by many things including work-related stress or family-related stress. And although it&#8217;s not always possible to eliminate the cause of the stress it is often possible to relieve the muscle tension and pain that originates from the stress.</p>
<p>Biofeedback training (as explained above) is one way to help reduce stress. Other ways are taking a warm bath or shower, lying down and relaxing in a quiet dark room, having someone massage your neck and head (temporal region) muscles to help relieve your tension and muscle spasms or placing something cold (ice) on the back of the neck (at the base of the skull). When using ice it should not be placed directly on the skin. Some wet paper towels that have had the water wrung out of them should be placed between the ice and the skin. Regular exercise can also, over time, reduce tension.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, I’m writing this because I know there are millions of people out there with an acne problem that seems to not go away. Yes, if you’re like me you have tried all of the popular products. But, what if I told you that in order to have clear skin you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars every month. Actually, you may not have to spend any money.</p>
<p>So, with all that said here is my simple 6 Steps To Clearer Skin (Yes, this is what I am doing to help my skin clear):</p>
<p>1. Drink lots of purified water. Look, many of us with acne problems continue to drinks all of these sodas that have a lot of acid, colors, etc. Soda can really mess up the face. Leave all sodas and other drinks on the market alone and stick to only purified water. Try these waters &#8211; Poland Springs, Volvic, Penta (expensive), Smart Water, or Dasani. Water does wonders to the body!</p>
<p>2. Drink lots of Green Tea (at least 1 to 2 times a day). Green Tea has many antioxidants that will help in decreasing your acne problems. Try purchasing the Celestial Seasonings Green Tea.</p>
<p>3. Eliminate any and all fried foods or greasy foods from your diet. Yes, I know many dermatologists will disagree with this. What I have found is that when I stopped eating fried or greasy foods my face automatically started clearing and improving to the point where I was receiving compliments almost everyday. Fried food carries too much grease that can cause big pimples to form in your face. Also many fast food places use old grease over and over again. Old or reused grease is one big block in your way if you’re trying to get clear skin. Not Good!<br />

4. Eat a lot of vegetables (raw organic baby spinach is wonderful) and fruits everyday. Yeah I know you heard this before, but some of you are still not doing it. Vegetables and fruits alone. <p>5. Use pure vitamin E oil (use the Nature’s Gate Brand) for your face. I am telling you, it will make your look good in about two to three months. Vitamin E oil has all the healing and antioxidant properties to help in clearing your skin. Apply to your face every night before going to bed.</p>
<p>6. Eliminate all stress. I know for some, stress can result in many breakouts on the face. Some individuals are not good at dealing with stress.  You know what, let the stress go!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The practice of Yoga brings with it many physical and emotional benefits that the majority of people are unaware of. This article is quite long, so we have broken it up into two parts.  The first part is an introduction to Yoga and a overview of the major physical and psychological benefits of Yoga, while the second part shows how practicing yoga daily can have a profound effect on your ability to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself.</p>
<p>Yoga is a science; and indeed, in many places in the world (such as India), it is referred to as a science. This is not merely playing with words; it truly is approached as a science, which means that it is understood in terms of scientific methods.</p>
<p>Yogic science seeks to verify cause and effect, and build principles based upon objective observations. Indeed, in many places in the world, to be a yogic master of any credibility, one must be highly educated in the sciences, including physics and the biological sciences.</p>
<p>This discussion on yoga as science is important for us to include because it allows us to sensibly ask the question: what are the benefits of yoga? After all, if yoga is a faith or a belief, then asking this question isn&#8217;t fair; because it&#8217;s one that yoga cannot answer in terms that we can objectively understand.</p>
<p>Yoga is a science; as empirical and pragmatic as kinesiology, or exercise science, which seeks to understand how the body acts and reacts to changes in the internal physical environment. And even more simply than any of this: each of us has a right to ask the basic question, &#8220;why should I bother practicing yoga and what experience or benefits can I expect?&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, while the experience of yoga cannot be reduced to words – just as reading a book on preparing for a marathon isn&#8217;t going to actually physically prepare you to run a marathon – the goals and principles of yoga can easily be discussed.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the Mayo Clinic&#8217;s take on the benefits of meditation:</p>
<p>&#8220;Meditation is used by people who are perfectly healthy as a means of stress reduction. But if you have a medical condition that&#8217;s worsened by stress, you might find the practice valuable in reducing the stress-related effects of allergies, asthma, chronic pain and arthritis, among others.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yoga involves a series of postures, during which you pay special attention to your breathing — exhaling during certain movements and inhaling with others. You can approach yoga as a way to promote physical flexibility, strength and endurance or as a way to enhance your spirituality.</p>
<p>The Mind-Body Connection</p>
<p>Yoga is centered on the mind-body connection. This mind-body harmony is achieved through three things:</p>
<p>- postures (asanas)</p>
<p>- proper breathing (pranayama)<br />

<p>Mind and body draw inspiration and guidance from the combined practices of asanas, breathing, and meditation. As people age (to yogis, ageing is an artificial condition), our bodies become susceptible to toxins and poisons (caused by environmental and poor dietary factors).</p>
<p>Yoga helps us through a cleaning process, turning our bodies into a well synchronized and well-oiled piece of machinery.</p>
<p>Physical Benefits</p>
<p>By harmonizing these three principles, the benefits of yoga are attained. And just what are these benefits?</p>
<p>- equilibrium in the body’s central nervous system</p>
<p>- decrease in pulse</p>
<p>- respiratory and blood pressure rates</p>
<p>- cardiovascular efficiency</p>
<p>- gastrointestinal system stabilization</p>
<p>- increased breath-holding time</p>
<p>- improved dexterity skills.</p>
<p>- Improved balance</p>
<p>- Improved depth perception</p>
<p>- Improved memory</p>
<p>Psychological Benefits</p>
<p>As noted above, Yoga also delivers an array of psychological benefits; and in fact, this is a very common reason why people begin practicing it in the first place. Perhaps the most frequently mentioned psychological benefit of yoga is an improved ability to manage stress. Yoga diminishes an individual’s levels of anxiety, depression, and lethargy; thus enabling him/her to focus on what’s spiritual and important: achieving balance and happiness.</p>
<p>In part II of the Benefit of Yoga we&#8217;ll reveal how yoga can help deal with stress, unhealthy habits and pain management.  The benefits of Yoga go far beyond meditation and stretching, it is a way to release those toxic emotions that tend to stand in the way of living a healthy life.</p>
