For most of us, anybody who finds himself unable to take control of his life is simply foolish and weak. We don’t really understand the implications and impact of obsessive compulsive disorder in a person.

What is OCD?

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a disorder. Let’s get that thing straight. By disorder, we mean that it is a medical condition that requires serious attention. It is not just something we should dismiss and laugh at. There actually are people who are unable to control their compulsions because of the overpowering natures of their obsessions.

Now that we have mentioned it, let us understand what an obsession and a compulsion is. An obsession is something that causes us anxiety, excitement, or distress. It could be a fear of failure, or a need to see everything in symmetry and in order. They all sound so simple and minor at first look, but an obsession can turn serious and cause damage not only to ourselves but also to the people around us.

A compulsion, on the other hand, is our way of dealing with our obsessions. For example, we might be obsessed about arranging things alphabetically at all times. Thus, whenever we are given a set of objects or whatever, we are uncontrollably compelled to order them alphabetically, even if they do not really warrant arrangement. People who don’t have OCD find this very silly, but for the person who has it, it is causing a great deal of distress.

Dealing With OCD

People who have obsessive compulsive disorder find it very difficult to control their obsessions and compulsions. Majority of the sufferers do not really want to do what they are doing but have no choice but to continue because not doing so will only cause greater anxiety.

Compulsions are the means to assuage a particular obsession. However, their effect is only temporary, so the person finds himself or herself doing the same ritual over and over again, often to a destructive extent.

It is not easy to deal with a person who has OCD. This is why treatment is available. OCD sufferers can choose to either take medications, like Prozac or Zoloft, or undergo cognitive behavior therapy, which has a larger success rate but is very tedious and requires more effort to complete.

OCD is a problem not just for the person who has it but also for the people who surround him or her. Insufficient knowledge about obsessive compulsive disorder will lead the non-patient to misunderstand his or her behavior. It is easy for a person with no OCD to classify the OCD sufferer as simply insane. Without a deep understanding of the condition, the person who has OCD might just be laughed at or ridiculed – when all he or she really needs is help.

Therefore, if a friend is showing symptoms of OCD, you must keep an open mind. Not all OCD patients are insane and might only need your attention to help them get cured. Obtain more information on the condition so you know how to best help them.

Related posts:

Signs That A Person Has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Obsessive compulsive disorder is a serious condition that needs serious...

Symptoms Of The Condition Called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Yes, obsessive compulsive disorder is a medical condition. Those annoying crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes? Or those laugh lines around your mouth? Sure, these things are but part of the normal aging process. But what causes aging anyway? And is there anyway to retard it?

In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation are what lead to aging. Oxidation causes the production of substances called free radicals which are highly reactive. These free radicals can readily react with and damage other molecules. Note that it says “molecules” so that means free radicals don’t make the distinction between foreign bodies and healthy cells. And when free radicals start attacking the body’s own cells, you can guess what the results are – Aging.

If only there was a way to get rid of those harmful free radicals…

Well, have we got good news for you? Free radicals are natural enemies of antioxidants. The function of antioxidants is to destroy harmful free radicals, counteracting the damaging of tissues and in effect, treating aging or causing its retardation.

Antioxidants are commonplace in nature. In fact, antioxidants are abundant in more common vitamins such as retinol or Vitamin A, ascorbic acid or Vitamin C, tocopherol or Vitamin E, and selenium. They can be nutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). Antioxidants are believed to play an important role in preventing the development of such chronic illnesses as heart disease, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, and cataracts.

Although antioxidants cannot completely rid our bodies of free radicals, they can however work to retard or minimize the damage caused. Antioxidants block the process of oxidation by neutralizing free radicals. By neutralizing, they themselves become oxidized. For this reason, our bodies are always in need of a constant source of antioxidants.

How antioxidants work is a two-way process. First is the chain-breaking. This is where the antioxidant comes in to break the chain reaction of free radicals turning other molecules into free radicals like them. Chain-breaking is also called Stabilization.

The other aspect is more on the preventive side. Antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase prevent oxidation by reducing the rate of chain initiation. This time, instead of waiting for the free radicals to make a long chain of free radicals, antioxidants scavenge initiating radicals and destroy them before oxidation is set in motion.

Thus, aging is delayed and not only that, diseases and other illnesses caused by harmful free radicals are avoided.

Related posts:

Herbal Antioxidant The process of oxidation is where it all begins. Those days are gone now as the person can buy a kit and bring it out whenever it is needed.

The customer can just buy it from a reputable store and have this stored in a cool and dry place so this will just as effective like the day it was purchased.

Not everyone is familiar with aromatherapy. Those who have time can sign up for a class to learn the various properties and uses of each of the oils.

A beginner kit can come with four 10 ml. bottles. One example of such a kit may hold lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and peppermint.

In the course of the class, the student will learn that lavender is effective in treating anxiety and stress. Eucalyptus and peppermint can help the individual breathe easy again if one has a clogged nose while tea tree oil can be used to alleviate muscle pain.

Students who are already familiar with the various scents can get a larger kit that has more bottles. The individual will become an expert in using it one by one or even mixing the various oils that can help others feel refreshed.

Learning the use of each will make it easier for the person to use candles and bath salts. Eventually, buying packs don’t have to be done anymore since this can be purchased separately to come up with new concoctions.

If the oil that the person wants is out of stock, this can be ordered online. The customer will just have to pay using either cash or credit card.

Someone with a large aromatherapy kit can mix 20 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of rosemary and blackberry, 5 drops each of peppermint and cypress oil and use this to massage those sore muscles.

Another concoction that can help the individual relax is by using 20 drops of geranium, 10 drops of bergamot and ylang-ylang with 5 drops each of frankincense and cedar wood.

Having an aromatherapy kit is like carrying a first aid pack wherever the person goes. This should be checked regularly so there is always enough around when it is needed.

Someone who decides to become an aroma therapist after taking the class should first check if the client is allergic to any of the oils. This will give the professional time to find a substitute.

The person does not have to take a class in order to know how to use the kit. This is because each pack comes with a set of reading instructions that will help the user understand the use of each oil.

The aromatherapy kit can be used as long as this is needed. Sometimes just opening the bottle and inhaling it is enough while at times this has to be applied to the body.

All of the oils are made from natural ingredients, which are extracted from either plants or trees so there is no risk of overdose when it is used to make the pain go away. The customer can buy a pack today and experience the difference, which in some cases is more effective than buying drugs over the counter.

If however, the person’s condition does not improve, maybe it is time to call a doctor. People should remember that aromatherapy can only be used to help someone who is suffering from a headache, a cold or muscle pain.

Related posts:

Relaxing Through an Aromatherapy Bath A tiring day at the office with the head feeling...

Aromatherapy Bottle Aromatherapy is one of the best ways to feel revitalized...

Aromatherapy, what’s it all about? Aromatherapy is one of the fastest rising industries in the...

What you need to know about aromatherapy oils From the days of early civilization in Egypt, people have...

The benefits of aromatherapy through aromatherapy diffuser The term “aromatherapy” was first heard from the lips of...

Sweeteners for Diabetics

Sweeteners

The latest physical checkup at the doctor has just diagnosed the patient as a diabetic. This may occur because the body is not able to produce enough insulin or can no longer do it. This disease is commonly related to being overweight and can be averted with a change in diet.

Sugar is something people need in the body. Being diagnosed as a diabetic doesn’t mean the person can longer take this in. The individual must be aware of the types of sugar that can raise the blood sugar in the system that is bad for the health which can only happen by understanding the regimen set by the doctor and following the dietary plan.

For years, companies have produced various artificial sweeteners. Some of these do not affect the blood sugar of the person while there are those that do. A few examples that affect the system are white sugar, honey, corn syrup, brown sugar and fructose which can still be taken but in very limited amounts.

Calorie free sweeteners are those that contain aspartame, sucralose, saccharine and Acesulphame K. These are better known as Equal, Splenda, Nutrasweet and Sucanat. These products can be taken in large amounts and are either mixed with the food or in the drink.

These products have been tested numerous times and are certified by the FDA. There are other products in the market that have ingredients such as sorbitol and mannitol can also be used but in small amounts since this usually causes diarrhea. Diabetics who come across products that have stevia or cyclamates should not be used since these have not yet been approved.

Diabetes is treatable even if this is a type 1 or a type 2. The person can still live a normal life as long as certain changes in the lifestyle are done. The use of artificial sweeteners basically adds taste to the drink or food the individual has for a snack or in the meal. This is healthy since no calories are absorbed which could be harmful to the body.

The person can buy these artificial sweeteners in packs or in boxes which are perfect for the home or when traveling. The patient should still have regular visits with the doctor to test the blood sugar. In fact, the practice of using oils has been in place for nearly a thousand years. It was however only in the 20th century when the term aromatherapy was used.

It started with the Chinese, who are among the first cultures to incorporate the practice into their traditions. They use plant oils and burns incense to help create balance within the body and harmony with nature.

Later on, the Egyptians adopted the practice and created an old distiller prototype which extracts cedarwood oil crudely. The oils that they extract from the plant are then sold in markets in their country. There are some that claim that Persia and India were the ones that invented the distillation process but of course nothing has been proven yet.

As time passed, the Egyptians started to extract oils from different plants. In addition to cedarwoos, they use clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and myrrh. These oils were also used in the embalming of their dead. In fact, when an Egyptian tomb was opened back in the early 20th century, remains and traces of these plants were seen in some parts of the body. Archaeologists were even able to smell the scent.

The Egyptians also used the scents and the oils in some of their rituals, especially those that are spiritual in nature. Some also used the oils as medicines while the women used them as perfumes and cosmetic. In fact, the word perfume is thought to have come from the latin word fumum, which means smoke. There are claims that men also use fragrance like women but they have an interesting method of doing it. They will place a solid cone of perfume on their heads, which they will gradually melt until the perfume and scent cover their whole bodies.

The Greeks also used perfumes but of course everything was credited to the Gods of their mythology. Still the use of plant oils as perfume took a life of its own and soon Megallus made a perfume from myrrh, which is a fatty-oil. His perfume called the Megaleion not only had aromatic benefits, it can also heal wounds and has an anti-inflammatory property towards the skin. It was also the Greeks that established the medicinal purposes of plants. In fact, the father of medicine, Hippocrates, practiced the use of plants for its aromatic and medicinal benefits.

Armed with the knowledge that they have gotten from the civilizations of the Egyptians and the Greeks, Roman Discorides wrote a book called De Materia Medica, which essays the different properties of as much as 500 plants.

In the 11th century, a process called coiled cooling pipe was invented. This had a large impact on the distillation of essential oils. Avicenna, a Persian, was the one who created the prototype, which allowed steam and vapor from the plant to cool down so that it can be extracted better and faster than other distilling machines. Because of this invention, the focus once again went to the benefits of essential plant oils.

Related posts:

Aromatherapy, what’s it all about? Aromatherapy is one of the fastest rising industries in the...

Benefits of aromatherapy Aromatherapy, like all new age practices, is riding on to...

Information that Aromatherapy-enthusiasts should know With the fad on new age activities on the rise,...

The benefits of aromatherapy through aromatherapy diffuser The term “aromatherapy” was first heard from the lips of...

Discovering the wonders of aromatherapy essential oils Even before the dawn of modern civilization, essential oils have...

Reflexology During The Menstrual Period

Reflexology

In the field of reflexology, the reproductive organs have reflex points that are represented in both the hands and feet. On the back of the hand just above the wrist bone lays the pressure point for the entire reproductive system. The width is about the same as one’s index finger. On the foot reflexology map, the pressure point is shown right on the upper curve of the ankle where the feet and the leg meet. Te entire length would be from the outside ankle bone up to the inner ankle bone. This is where pressure is applied for the benefit of the fallopian tube, groin and iliac lymph nodes.

The pressure points for the testicle and ovary are found on the hands only. Within the pressure point of the fallopian tube, groin and iliac lymph nodes, directly above the wrist bone is the area for the testicle and ovary. It is just a small area which would probably feel like the tip of one’s tiny finger.

The prostate glands and uterus are represented on the opposite side of the pressure point of the testicle and ovary. They are about an inch apart, located in the inner side of the back hand. Similar to the pressure points of the testicle and ovary, it is also not present in the reflexology map of the foot.

For the females, this is especially helpful in times of pre -menstrual cramps and dysmenorrhea, where the uterus and ovary is under extreme stress. There is a tight feeling of tension within the body as if the uterus is being choked. However, that feeling is only caused by the swelling brought about by the hormonal changes in the body during this time of the menstrual cycle.

Constant pressure applied to this area will relieve affected females of the menstrual pain that could often lead to being immobile for a day or two. Pain relievers have been formulated to help ease the pain; however, some users of this drug have developed immunity to its numbing effect that they are required to take large doses before finally feeling the ease. Reflexology will allow the blood to circulate and release tension in the fallopian tubes to enable the menses to be released immediately.

The main objective of reflexology is to relieve tension and stress on any given body part or organ by applying enough pressure on the reflex points. The application of reflexology especially during the vulnerable days of menstruation will provide welcome relief. It is also a good alternative to massaging the lower back which can ache very badly during menstruation.

It has been said that massaging the lower back during the period of menstruation is not good because the reproductive system is very vulnerable and soft at this time and massaging it could cause the uterus to be misaligned. Though the truths to this claim have not yet been cemented, it would be safe to keep the massaging on one’s hands and feet until the tide is over and just keep the pain reliever pill dosage sporadically.

Related posts:

Reflexology Map Reflects The Small Scale Human Anatomy Looking at a reflexology map, one would be amazed to...

Here’s How To Do Simple Reflexology On The Foot Reflexology is one therapy that primarily targets the feet. As a symptom, it can be a cause of some serious ailments. Headaches that come with vomiting and nausea can be signs of migraine. The headache nausea that usually accompanies migraine can be effectively treated by some anti-nausea medication. But one should be more concerned about the headache that migraines cause.

Migraine is increasingly becoming a big problem for a growing number of people. Migraine headaches are brought about by the sudden shrinking and then swelling of blood vessels in the head that causes the pain. Migraine headaches can be triggered by a lot of things. Tension, for one, is one major trigger of migraines in a lot of people. Fatigue, hunger, bright lights and a variety of different foods and beverages can also be possible migraine triggers.

The onset of a migraine attack comes with some telltale signs. Nausea and vomiting may be felt before any actual pain or headache is experienced. Another sign of an incoming migraine attack is seeing flashing lights and colors all around. The body can also feel hot and weak on one side and may last for about 15 to 30 minutes and then followed by an intense headache. Other warning signs of migraines can also include the feeling of tiredness, depression, and/or restlessness that can go for two to three days before the headache is experienced.

Treatment for migraines includes taking a number of prescription medications which is usually effective when taken just as the headache starts. Non-medication treatment for migraines includes applying cold compress or splashing cold water on the face at the first sign of headaches. A migraine attack can also be alleviated by lying down in a quiet and dark room for several hours to sleep or meditate to relax the mind.

There are also other therapies that are being employed in order to help prevent migraines. This includes maintaining a proper diet by avoiding foods such as chocolate, caffeine or alcohol that can trigger a migraine attack. Living a stress-free life can also help in keeping migraine in check. Meditation and relaxation exercises such as Yoga can also help prevent further migraine attacks.

The use of biofeedback therapy has also been found helpful in trying to prevent migraine attacks by effectively helping relax the mind. Migraines do not have to be a very painful problem for many people. Knowing how to treat such an ailment as well as how to prevent them can help people lead a more normal life.

Related posts:

What Is A Migraine Headache Migraines are more intense than tension-type headaches or simple headaches....

Relieving Headache the Natural Way Migraine headaches affect about 15 percent of the population. After an In-office examination, the dentist would either do the procedure in his clinic then recommend a home kit for the patients to conduct the treatments or follow up procedures at home. There is however cases when home kits are better used. The following are your guide.

While in-office teeth whitening produce fast results the bleaching agents used contain hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxides are very potent bleaching agents that could cause tooth hypersensitivity and gum irritation. If you have this condition, it is best to use bleaching agents that contain carbamide peroxide. This agent may not be as fast acting but it is far gentler and would likely be recommended by your dentist. Depending also on your condition, the concentration of carbamide peroxide in your bleaching tray could be lowered by your dentist to insure comfort as the teeth is being bleached.

There are many cases where the staining is deep and for the meantime intractable. No amount of bleaching will be effective unless other procedures are conducted first. If ever, the stained tooth will only become more apparent while the surrounding teeth are bleaching white. In cases such as this, the dentist may recommend a home bleaching kit and recommend other alternatives to peroxide bleaching or an intensive home bleaching program. Recommending crowns, veneers and bonds may also be considered.

The teeth tend to become more transparent as it ages. This is particularly apparent with the front teeth as it is the thinnest in the set. Whitening aged teeth requires a different procedure other than bleaching.

While there are 16 shades of teeth, they are divided into two basic types, the yellowish and the greenish. Stains on teeth that are greenish-grey in cast are harder to remove while those that have a yellow cast tend to whiten faster.

Since teeth whitening and bleaching are among the simplest cosmetic procedures and provided you do not have cracks crowns porcelain veneers, special teeth and gum conditions, home kits are advisable provided you start with a low mixture of bleaching agents and water. Peroxides that are sold over the counter have indications and recommendations for the mixture which you could use. There are teeth whitening / bleaching kits that could be had OTC because there are also disadvantages to in-office teeth whitening.

Setting an appointment with the dentist aside from finding the time to sit in a dentist’s chair and the follow up sessions that are required could be time constraining to other people. When it is just a simple teeth bleaching program, especially with those who have yellowed teeth only, other alternatives works just a fine. One of the primary considerations aside from time is the cost. While over the counter whitening strips would only cost around $100, in-office whitening averages $650 upwards and take home trays around $400. If not your doctor, then you’ve probably heard about them more than once from your mom. “Eat your veggies. An apple a day…” Sound familiar?

While it’s quite true that there’s nothing healthier than including fresh produce in your diet, there is actually another reason why doctors insist on a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. The answer may lie in antioxidant foods.

Antioxidant foods are powerful scavengers of free radicals. The function of antioxidant foods is to hunt down free radicals and destroy them.

What are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are highly reactive chemical substances that are produced when the body undergoes the process of oxidation. The reason that free radicals are highly reactive is that they lack electrons, which cause them to be highly unstable. To achieve maximum stability, free radicals therefore steal electrons from other molecules around them and in so doing, destroy the cell membranes and weaken the cell.

Free radicals cause a chain reaction of “electron stealing” because the minute they start taking away electrons from other molecules, those molecules become free radicals themselves. Massive destruction ensues, leading to such disorders as Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, cancer, senility, and more.

How Antioxidant Foods Work

Oxidation is a naturally occurring process in the body so there is really no way for us to avoid or prevent it from happening. Even the mere act of breathing causes oxidation to take place. That being said, free radicals, as by-products of oxidation, will always be present in our body.

But what if there is a way for us to retard the development of free radicals? What if there is a way to break the free radical chain reaction? What if there is a way to prevent those diseases caused by harmful free radicals from developing?

Yes, indeed, there is a way. Antioxidant foods are powerful substances that can neutralize free radicals before they damage your body’s cells. This is the major reason why scientists are continuing to conduct studies on antioxidant foods and the benefits that the body can incur from them.

Antioxidant Foods: Which Foods?

As mentioned earlier, many foods with high antioxidant levels are vegetables and fruits. Tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers – these are but a few of the many antioxidant foods out there. However, you should note that not all vegetables are high sources of antioxidant foods. Some vegetables or fruits may have lesser amount or concentration of antioxidant foods as other vegetables. For instance, white grapes don’t have the same amount of antioxidant foods as the grapes used in making red wine.

Related posts:

Super Antioxidant Have you ever felt like wishing you had more energy?...

Herbal Antioxidant The process of oxidation is where it all begins. This can range from your eyelid, ears and nose to your abdomen, hips and breasts. The process involves tissue transfer for the result to appear as natural as your ordinary skin or feature.

One of the reasons why cosmetic plastic surgery is sought after is because of its superficial appeal. With this procedure, you can change the appearance of any parts of your body in order to improve them.

For example, excess skin in your belly or hips can be eliminated. Not only that, your ears or nose can be reshaped the way you want it. Cosmetic plastic surgery is the medium to use if you are not satisfied with some parts of your body and want them reconstructed.

Over the years, cosmetic plastic surgery has gained popularity. Today, it is not only movie stars and famous people who are capable of going under the needle. Even those living ordinary lives can enjoy the benefits that this procedure can give.

With the use of advanced technology, modern methods are developed and made. With innovative tools, the risks involved in the procedure are minimized. Moreover, the fear and the pain behind the process are also reduced. This is why those who are afraid of having cosmetic plastic surgery before are now more confident of undergoing one.

The doctors performing the surgery are also more capable nowadays. The educational background that they have is not anymore sufficient. There are now seminars, workshops and additional trainings that they need to undergo to be able to master the craft of cosmetic plastic surgery and have that certification and distinction.

There are basically three types of cosmetic plastic surgery that most people are opting for. These are:

1. Blepharoplasty.

Those who want to have wrinkles or sagging skin removed around their eyelids go through this procedure. In blepharoplasty, the eyelids are reshaped and put back into its original state. It could also be reshaped depending on the requirements of the clients.

2. Rhinoplasty.

This cosmetic plastic surgery procedure is the reconstruction of the shape of the nose. You can increase or reduce the size of your nose. Also, you can opt to change its bridge or tip.

There are instances wherein this procedure is done to ease problems in breathing. It may be because the person is involved in an accident or illness which has affected some part of the nose.

3. Mammoplasty.

Mammoplasty is for those who want to enlarger the size of their breast. Women undergo this treatment in the belief that women with large breasts are considered sexy and are preferred by most men.

The procedure is done using silicone gel or saline implants.

4. Abdominoplasty.

This type of cosmetic plastic surgery involves the firming and reshaping of the belly. This is done by removing “excess” fat and skin surrounding the abdomen. Obesity, pregnancy and old age are some of the reasons for the unwanted fats in the belly.

Going through cosmetic plastic surgery is not a joke. Its popularity is not the reason why you should undergo one. It is best to seek the guidance of the experts who can tell you what the procedure is about, its effects and if you really need one in the first place.

Related posts:

Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Plastic surgery is a therapeutic treatment that uses non surgical...

Eye Plastic Surgery Eyes are considered as the window to your soul.
