Seine Verwendung als Vitalpilz reicht in der chinesischen Medizin etwa 4.000 Jahre zurück. Dies ist aus Überlieferungen bekannt. Der Reishi wird in Asien auch „Pilz der Unsterblichkeit“ genannt, was auf seine Fähigkeit, Alterungsprozesse erheblich zu verlangsamen, zurückzuführen ist! Er heißt in Japan "Reishi " und in China "Ling Zhi ". Im Handel sind sowohl der hochkonzentrierte Extrakt des Reishi Pilzes als auch der pulverisierte Reishi in Tabletten oder Kapselform. Inhaltsstoffe und medizinische Wirkung: Der Reishi enthält Vitamine und Mineralstoffe , u.a. Eisen , Magnesium , Kalzium , Zink , Kupfer, Mangan und Germanium. Besonders im Linus-Pauling-Institut für Wissenschaft und Medizin wurden Arbeiten durchgeführt. 250 Krebs-Patienten, die als hoffnungslos bereits aufgegeben waren, wurden mit dem Extrakt des Reishi behandelt. Zwar war damals der Begriff „Immunkraft" noch nicht bekannt. Doch man meinte dasselbe, wenn man betonte: „Der Reishi-Pilz hilft, Krankheiten zu besiegen, und erhöht die Lebenserwartung des Menschen". Heute ist es gesichert, dass er sowohl vorbeugende Wirkungen wie heilende Wirkungen hat. The low-calorie fruit is high in vitamin C, calcium and potassium, Milligan says, and has little sodium and no cholesterol or saturated fat. Poultices made from the cactus long have been used in some cultures to fight infection and speed healing of wounds, processes aided by the high vitamin C and flavonoid content.

"Prickly pear is a good source of fiber, too," she says, "and we all need more of that. It's similar to the soluble fiber that has been shown to sop up cholesterol. Interesting is that " The American Heart Association" has done research using the prickly pear to help manage cholesterol levels."

Depending on the species from which it's harvested, the fruit may not be as sweet and juicy as it is nutritious, Puente says. He suggests blending it for a few seconds with ice, a sweetener and other fruit to make it more palatable.
