Cereal and Fruit Fiber Protective against Postmenopausal Breast Cancer

Results of a prospective study involving 51,823 postmenopausal women for an average of 8.3 years showed a 34% reduction in breast cancer risk for those consuming the most fruit fiber compared to those consuming the least. In addition, in the subgroup of women who had ever used hormone replacement, those consuming the most fiber, especially cereal fiber, had a 50% reduction in their risk of breast cancer compared to those consuming the least. Int J Cancer. 2008 Jan 15;122(2):403-12.

Fruits richest in fiber include apples, dates, figs, pears and prunes. When choosing a high fiber cereal, look for whole grain cereals as they supply the most bran (a mere 1/3rd cup of bran contains about 14 grams of fiber). A cup of oatmeal delivers 15% of the RDI for fiber. Start out your day with a bowl of hot oatmeal or if you prefer cold cereal, oatmeal granola, and you'll be well on your way to meeting your daily RDI for fiber.

Twenty per cent of adults don't eat anything for breakfast and many dieters skip breakfast as a means to lose weight, says Sara Stanner, spokesperson for the Nutrition Society. "But this will leave you lacking energy and impair concentration and performance throughout the morning – research shows it."

The best breakfasts are high in fibre and contain protein, she says. "This promotes satiety and helps with appetite control." Think wholegrain breakfast cereal, muesli or porridge with milk or a poached egg.

Don't overeat at lunchtime – a heavy lunch, especially if you're not used to it, can cause an afternoon slump. "A lighter lunch and a healthy afternoon snack are a better option," says Stanner. Even slight dehydration, where you may not feel thirsty, can leave you tired and lethargic

Organic Rolled Oats are one of the most nutritious grains that you can add to your daily meals.

They are considered to be a good source of the soluble fibre beta-glucan, which helps to decrease cholesterol in the blood. Other important nutrients found in oats are B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, phosphorous, calcium, a

nd thiamin.

Top Nosh Foods has a great selection of whole grains including organic oats. I first came across Top Nosh Foods at the Northside Markets in North Sydney. What impressed me was the fact that they were willing to let me sample their mueslis and nut spreads without any hesitation. They even opened a packet of organic oats to show me how different the oats that they were selling looked to the ones that I’d just bought at a health food store.

The difference was phenomenal! Their organic oats were a beautiful, well shaped thick cut grain flakes, whereas, what I had in the packet where small broken pieces of oat flakes. You can see their organic rolled oats on the left hand side of the plate; the light cream coloured flakes!

Since then I’ve been buying their oats and I thought I’d share with you why oats are such a wonderful addition to everyone’s diet.

The Organic Rolled Oats that Top Nosh Foods sell have been stablised which means they have been subjected to steam for a short time, before they are then rolled.

These stabilised oats will make a a chewier firmer porridge than unstabilised oats as the flakes remain more whole. However, these stabilised Organic Rolled Oats are the best for making biscuits, multi grain mueslis, or bakes.

A wonderful way to start the morning is with a steaming bowl of fresh oats or in fact multi grains, especially if you are trying to prevent or are currently dealing with cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, poor immunity, and/or atherosclerosis.
If you wish to read more on the benefits of eating fibre then have a look at this link – http://www.diabetes.ca/Section_About/fibre.asp

Did you know that oats, oat bran, and oat meal contain a specific type of fibre known as beta-glucan, which may help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease by 16-48%, as well as helping to increase the immune system.

Further, there are studies which have shown that eating oats can significantly help lower blood cholesterol levels and are very good for a diabetic diet as the are a good source of both dietary fibre and soluble fibre.

Another interesting fact is that as mentioned Oats contain high levels of vitamin E which are essential to boosting energy and slowing the ageing process.

Top Nosh Foods have a whole selection of whole grains to choose from and it’s really worth buying from their web site.

A single muesli bar can be so full of healthy whole grains and dried fruits, that slowly release energy and will keep you active for a long period of time.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Makes 12 bars

Ingredients:
Power Crunch High Fibre Muesli -400 g
Sunflower oil- 60 ml
Golden Syrup- 2 tbsp

Method:
Because Power Crunch High Fibre Muesli has already been baked there is no need to bake it any further.
Preheat the oven to 160 degree Celsius. Grease a 20 cm cake tin and line it with aluminium foil.
In a large bowl add golden syrup, brown sugar and oil in a pan. Bring to boil. Keep stirring in medium heat and bring to boil for 2 minutes. Quickly pour it over the Power Crunch High Fibre Muesli in the bowl and mix well.
Transfer this to the cake tin, spread evenly and press the mixture. Bake it in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Take it out from the oven, it will look very crumbly at this stage. Let it cool down in the tin for 1 to 2 hours until it looks firm. Then cut them into bar and store it in a air tight container. When you make it , it will probably have a chewy texture, however after a day or two it will firm up and become harder.

Why you may ask, does a person need exercise?

Well, really, a fast metabolism that burns off fat isn’t just the luck of the draw. We all know, although we care not to admit, that exercise or any movement above a dawdle, speeds up our metabolism. Essentially by increasing our kilojoule expenditure ( burning off the energy) through exercise, we’re burning off the increased kilojoules in our food ( burning off the fat)

So, I’m certain that you’ve read somewhere, that exercise makes our muscles larger and in so doing increases their demand for energy making them all the better to burn fat. Well in case you shrugged this off, I’m telling you this fact again. You need to exercise!

In making our bodies more sensitive to insulin, exercise reduces the demand for this hormone making the body burn fat rather than sugar.

So when you look at a low GI food, for instance a properly prepared healthy muesli for breakfast, and you exercise after breakfast this will give your body an even greater boost to burn more fat rather than carbohydrate.

So it really makes sense to combine a low GI diet with exercise, if your aim is to lose body fat.

I was looking for berry muesli's and came across this testimonial of Top Nosh Foods' Raspberry Razzle Muesli. Pretty impressive when someone's customers consider the product so good that they are willing to say so publicly.

What is even more impressive is when a non-muesli eater finds the flavour of this Raspberry Razzle Muesli so wonderful that they are willing to change their breakfast habits to eat this berry muesli ever day.

This is what they had to say:

The makings of an exceptional Muesli is when the flavour of the Muesli converts non muesli eaters on just a taste!

"I was not a muesli eater until I discovered Top Nosh Muesli. Raspberry Razzle has a great flavour good texture with the whole nuts and is not too sweet. I now eat muesli every day – and I love it!"

As Raspberries have almost 50% more antioxidant qualities than strawberries, I think that this berry muesli would be a great way to start the day.
