Pride Month takes place in June every year in the UK with the aim of celebrating and honouring LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. It is about acceptance, equality and raising awareness of issues affecting the community, including health related issues.

Ebsco databases (Cinahl and Medline) will be changing for NHS users

The NHS will be moving to a new version of the EBSCOhost interface used to search journal literature including the CINAHL database. The transition is expected to take place on the 14^th July. Action may be required if you have have saved searches and regular alerts set up.

You can continue to access the databases from the Health Library website, using your NHS OpenAthens username.

We will share opportunities to learn more about how to search on the new EBSCOhost shortly.

Some FAQs have been created to support the change – please do look and take action to ensure you do not lose saved work.

Sunday opening hours to begin this Sunday

We’re pleased to inform you that the Health Library in the CEC will now open on Sundays from 10am to 4pm as part of a six‑month trial, responding to feedback requesting additional opening hours.

This trial period will allow us to assess demand, usage, and feedback before making any long‑term decisions.

During Sunday opening, the Library will be available for self‑service use only. Entry will be via the wooden door to the Library on your right, through the entrance next to the bridge. Security staff will be present to look after the space and ensure a safe environment.

During Sunday self‑service, you WILL be able to:

Use your Keelecard or NHS Library card to swipe access the Library between 10am and 4pm
Access the different study spaces and NHS/Keele networked PCs within the Library
Issue and return items using the self‑service machine

During Sunday self‑service, you WILL NOT be able to:

Access the Library without a working Keelecard or NHS Library card
Return or issue laptops
Ask questions about Library services, equipment, or your Library account
Receive any training from Library staff
Access the wider CEC building

If you need a Library card for access you will need to join the Library as a member during our staffed Library hours 8.30am-8pm weekdays or 10am-4pm on Saturdays. We will create a card for you. Your feedback will be very important to us during this trial, so we encourage you to make use of the CEC Health Library on Sundays and share your thoughts on how it works for you.

We hope this additional opening time is useful.

This session, accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health UK (RSPH), aims to: introduce you to the concept of health literacy; consider the impact low health literacy can have on your work, your patients, and the NHS; and explore practical methods that can be used to help improve health literacy and the patient experience. It is a 1 hour interactive session delivered online.

New resource - Renal Drug Database for UHNM staff

The Renal Drug Database is now available to all UHNM staff!

What is the Renal Drug Database?

The Renal Drug Database is an online drug reference tool providing additional drug detail relevant to renal patients, on renal dialysis or with kidney transplants. Each of the over 900 monographs provides guidance on Clinical Use, Dose in Normal Renal Function, Dose in Renal Impairment, Important Drug Interactions, Metabolism and Administration, with information validated under the governance of the UK Renal Pharmacy Group.

How do you access the Renal Drug Database?

You will need an individual username and password to access this resource. Note it is not an NHS OpenAthens authenticated resource. Request your username / password either by completing our online form or contacting librarian Cheryl at the Health Library c.kent@keele.ac.uk.

Key Features

RDD has a simple search interface to enter the drug you are investigating. Search results can be ordered by relevance, article title or reviewed date. The reviewed date is included in the results list. Click the drug title to view the detailed entry. Any specific issues relating to renal patients are listed.

NHS staff - Your help is required to build understanding of needs for access to evidence in the NHS.

The national team for Knowledge and Library Services are researching how NHS staff currently access and use evidence. We have completed interviews with people from all parts of the team and in all settings across the NHS in England. The next phase of the research will seek to validate the needs that have been identified as a result.
We want to understand the picture for clinical and non-clinical staff, students and apprentices, those in regular contact with their Knowledge and Library Service and those who are not.
You can read about previous user research that informed the creation of the Knowledge and Library Hub and be assured that your input can make the difference.
