Alli Weight Loss System Poor Results

The first over the counter and FDA approved weight loss drug is not producing the impact that was projected it may be due to several factors. The poor economic status may have people skipping buying a pill and opting for the traditional exercise and diet approach which is the best approach if you are willing to motivate yourself to do it.

So why are sales low? Let's talk about what Alli is first. The drug was approved in 2007 for over-the-counter marketing as a weight loss aid. Glazosmithkline, the creators of Alli, recommend the drug be used with a diet low in fat, a daily multivitamin, and exercise program.

Glaxosmithkline spent 150 million on marketing campaigns for Alli during its first year. Their marketing campaign has focused on the Alli plan. The plan is to live life in a new way with adjustments to eating habits and exercise regimen. The marketing plan seemed to miss the mark. The original sales projections were 5 to 6 million annually, but Alli’s first year was short a million. The company says the product is not for everyone, but is an option and can help to increase weight loss by 50 percent. (During clinical trials, 2 to 3 pounds for every 5 pounds lost through diet and exercise was reported lost in patients using Alli, although almost half of the patients involved in the trial reported gastrointestinal side effects.)

Alli prevents absorption of a quarter of fat that is eaten. One fat gram has double the calories of protein and carbohydrates. Therefore, while taking Alli and eating a reduced calorie low fat diet Glaxosmithkline feels Alli could really make a difference in weight while limiting the total calories entering the system. However, Alli pamphlets state that the drug is only expected to help lose 5 to 10 pound in 6 months. Some dieters feel the small amount of weight loss could be accomplished by cutting out a few soft drinks weekly without taking the diet pill

Alli’s side effects of leakages and oily discharge that can cause soiled underwear can be deterring. Prior to the drug launch there was marketing materials for the new drug that stressed the importance of keeping meals under 15 grams of fat to avoid soiled underwear. Some pamphlets even recommended starting the program when off of work. Now the company has began to state that the side effects can be avoided with the proper use of the drug.

Why would the 1st FDA-approved weight loss drug not blow the projected numbers out of sight? It could be because change is a challenge for most people and the company recommends that anyone taking the pill also adopts exercise and good low-fat eating habits.

Breast Imaging Now More Effective for Detecting Cancer

New Breast Imaging machine is making detecting breast cancer easier. This is good news because identifying cancer earlier is essential to increase survival rate. Considering Breast cancer is very common in women and occurs occasionally in men it is important to note that this is great news for our health.

Results which recognized mammography as a successful diagnostic tool for cancer were first published in 1967. Since that time, breast self-examination and a mammography have been considered essential in the identification of breast cancer. The goal of mammograms is the early detection of breast cancer, but this technique has not always been reliable, with false positive and false negative readings occurring in a portion of cases.

Doctors are now using newer breast imaging techniques to diagnose and stage breast cancer. Breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI) and positron emission mammography (PEM) rely on the use of radiotracers to detect cancer cells instead of the X-rays used in mammograms. The BSGI tracer is positively charged, while cancer cells are negatively charged. The tracer diffuses around cancer cells and highlights them in the process. The PEM tracer uses glucose in this process. Glucose is used by all cells for energy, with cancer cells using more energy and more of the tracer which are highlighted on the image.

Dr. Patrick Borgen, director of the Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at the Maimonides Cancer Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. said, “I think it’s exciting that we’re moving more to functional imaging, but mammography is the mainstay of breast cancer screening and neither of these tests is in a position to replace mammography as the cornerstone of cancer detection. These tests are adjuncts.” Borgen, who was not involved in studies involving either BSGI of PEM procedures, stated that neither test is widely available and both can be costly.

Studies of both procedures and their results were presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America held November 30th to December 5th in Chicago. In one of the studies PEM was used to assess how the imaging technique was affected by the density of breasts or the hormonal status of the patient in 208 women with breast cancer. Dr. Kathy Schilling, director of breast imagining and intervention at the Center for Breast Care at the Boca Raton Community Hospital in Florida said that the PEM scanner does immobilize the breast, but does not compress it. Schilling was the lead author of the study. Schilling said the results were similar to, or better than, breast MRI tests. She believes that the PEM will probably be used as breast MRI’s have been used, because MRI causes so many false positives and unnecessary biopsies.

The second study, reviewed data from 159 women who had been found to have a suspicious lesion as a result of a mammogram. The women then had BSGI scanning which uses mild compression to capture images. The testing revealed suspicious lesions in 29 percent of the women, a third of these lesions were found to be cancerous. This study was conducted by Rachel F. Brem, M.D., of the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington DC, and colleagues.

Breast cancer in women is second only to skin cancer for incidence in the United States. Experts agree that the best way to decrease mortality from the disease is through early detection.

Brain Waves May Help in Diagnosing Autism

One child in 150 in the United States is diagnosed with autism, the majority affected being boys. Autistic children usually are slow in communicating, have difficulty connecting with others, and are prone to repetitive activities. Autistic children can be helped with education and medication, but professionals agree that for intervention to be successful it must start early. Doctors usually diagnose a child with autism based on what their parents observe and by observing the child themselves. The diagnosis usually comes after the child is two years of age.

A recent study involving MEG (magnetoencephalography) as a diagnostic tool has researchers believing that they may have found a way to test children in a relatively simple way. The MEG measures magnetic fields generated by electrical currents in the brain. The research used a helmet that looks like a hair dryer to study the brain waves of 64 children, 30 of which had been diagnosed with autism. The children wore headphones and listened to a series of beeps, vowels, and sentences. Comparison of the results revealed that the autistic children responded one fiftieth of a second slower than children without autism. “We tend to speak at four syllables per second, if an autistic brain is slow in processing a change in a syllable…it could easily get to the point of being overloaded,” according to Timothy Roberts.

Roberts is the study's lead author and vice chairman of research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where the study was conducted. The children in the study were between 6 and 15 years of age. The study results were released Monday at the Radiological Society of North America meeting in Chicago.

The study revealed unique brain waves in autistic children and with the slower response to sounds the researchers believe that autistic children have problems understanding syllables as they are spoken and this prevents them from communicating effectively. The researchers are looking for the findings to be confirmed and the possibility that they may be able to detect autism in children as young as one. This would allow an early start on behavioral therapy necessary to help these children learn to communicate. Roberts said that the findings fit the theory that autism is a “disorder of connectivity of the brain.”

MEG technology has been used to map brain tumors and evaluate epilepsy. One of the drawbacks of the technology at present is the shortage of MEG machines. According to Roberts only about 150 of the MEG units exist at this time and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has the only one dedicated to pediatric care. Brain scans using MRIs and CT scans are not specific enough to give the detailed imagery necessary to detect the microscopic difference in the brain tissue to diagnose autism.

Autism disorders range across a broad range of abilities, and collectively are known as ASDs (Autistic Spectrum Disorders). Roberts said, “Earlier diagnosis of ASDs may allow clinicians to intervene earlier with possible treatments.” He foresees MEG being employed to examine people with attention deficit disorders, and other mental problems. He believes it may also provide more clues to the causes of autism and may help determine what is hereditary and what is environmental in the cause.

Groundbreaking Osteoporosis Breakthrough

Through a process called remodeling, our body continuously breaks down bone, absorbs it and then rebuilds it. During the first three decades of our lives, bone is deposited faster than it is used, but by about age 30, breakdown outpaces formation and bone density declines, often resulting in osteoporosis, a condition that makes the bones weak and more likely to break. According to estimates, osteoporosis was responsible for more than 2 million fractures in 2005, with that number expected to rise as the population ages. There is no cure for osteoporosis, and most of the drugs currently approved for the treatment of the disease act by slowing the turnover of bone, rather than stimulating new bone formation. However, an accidental discovery may open the door for new treatments for the disease, which currently affects nearly 10 million Americans over the age of 50.

While investigating the role of a protein known as LDL-receptor related protein 5, or LRP5, in two rare forms of osteoporoses, a team of researchers led by Dr. Gerard Karsenty, chairman of the department of genetics and development at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in NewYork, discovered that bone formation is controlled through serotonin produced by the duodenum, a part of the gastrointestinal tract. Ninety-five percent of the body’s serotonin is made by the gut, while the brain generates the other five percent. A membrane blocks serotonin made in the gut from entering the brain, but gut serotonin is released into the blood where it travels to bone-forming cells and inhibits their growth. The more serotonin that reaches the bone, the more bone loss; the less serotonin, the denser and stronger the bones become. “This is totally new,” Dr. Karsenty said. “We had no clue that the gut had control over bone, and in such a powerful manner.”

LRP5 acts on serotonin-producing cells in the gut by blocking the enzyme that converts the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin. The more LRP5, the more the enzyme is blocked and the less serotonin is made. To test the link between LRP5 and gut serotonin, the researchers gave mice mutations that caused a reduction in LRP5 activity. These mice had much higher levels of gut serotonin than the mice without the mutation. The same was true of three human patients who had osteoporosis caused by the mutations in the LRP5 gene; they had four-to-five times the gut-derived serotonin than that of age-matched control subjects.

Conversely, mice with mutations that caused an increase in LRP5 protein activity, causing dense bones, had lower levels of gut-derived serotonin. Two human patients with high bone mass syndrome caused by similar mutations were found to have half the gut-derived serotonin than their control subjects. Until these experiments, the function of gut-associated serotonin was not known, Dr. Karsenty said. “The findings demonstrate without a doubt that serotonin from the gut is acting as a hormone to regulate bone mass.”

The researchers were able to change the density of the mice’s bones by manipulating the serotonin levels in the gut. As a way to lower the levels of gut-derived serotonin, the mice were fed a diet low in tryptophan. On this low-tryptophan diet, mice with the mutation that would have caused weak bones had normal bone density. Mutated mice that received a drug that prevents serotonin synthesis in the gut had the same outcome as the ones on the low-tryptophan diet. The researchers were also able to prevent osteoporosis in mice undergoing menopause by shutting off the gut’s release of serotonin. Although the findings were made on mice, Dr. Karsenty says they help to understand bone modeling in humans. “This is not a mouse story,” he said. “From the beginning it was a human story that we have worked out in the mouse.”

These findings open vast possibilities of controlling diseases such as osteoporosis, either by a diet low in tryptophan or by inhibiting serotonin synthesis with medications. Dr. Karsenty said he thinks since the cells that produce serotonin come into contact with drugs that pass through the gastrointestinal tract, reducing gut-derived serotonin should be relatively simple to achieve with a drug, with few side effects. “The lack of bone promoting drugs is a major concern because osteoporoses is often diagnosed when the damage to bone is already significant and fracture risk is already too high,” said Dr. Karsenty. “We need something to build bone, not just prevent or repair its loss.”

Could An End to AIDS Be in Sight?

Would you have thought that in ten years there may be an end to the AIDS epidemic? It seems that based on a mathematical model and data gathered from South Africa and Malawi, countries with high AIDS infection rates, it could actually come to fruition.

Charlie Gilks, an AIDS expert with the World Health Organization (WHO), headed a scientific study that tested residents of South Africa and Malawi yearly over a simulated ten-year period. If residents tested positive for HIV they were immediately given antiretroviral drugs to treat the deadly virus, and cases of the HIV infection dropped by 95 percent. Based on the mathematical model, the number of AIDS deaths from now until 2050 would be cut in half.

HIV or the AIDS virus is one of the most frightening and deadliest viruses ever known. There is enough of the HIV virus in blood, vaginal fluid, semen, and breast milk of people infected with HIV, to infect others. Most people are infected with the HIV virus by having sex with someone already infected, sharing a needle with an infected person, a baby who is born from a mother who is infected, or by drinking the breast milk of someone infected.

Just because someone has been infected by HIV doesn’t mean that they have AIDS. Someone who has been infected with HIV may be perfectly healthy and not realize they have the virus. However, eventually they may develop AIDS. The CDC estimates between 1 and1.2 million Americans have HIV or AIDS and around 25 percent of those don’t even know it. Approximately 40 percent diagnosed annually with AIDS are men and 25 percent are women. 50 percent of the newly diagnosed patients in the U.S. are black, of who only make up 12 percent of the United States population.

Currently there is no cure for AIDS, though antiretroviral therapy (ART) can slow down the HIV virus and slow the damage to a patient’s immune system. As long as patients are being treated with ART, most will continue a healthy life. In order for patients to prevent progression of the virus, they must continue treatment daily for the rest of their lives. This could be difficult to maintain and very expensive. However, this is one of the keys to success of AIDS prevention as discovered in the newly released study by WHO in The Lancet. Their simulated mathematical model evaluated patients diagnosed with the HIV virus and treated them immediately and continuously. The model showed that the quick and continuous treatment greatly reduced AIDS cases after ten years. However, doctors aren’t really sure if it is safe to take the drugs for life yet.

WHO plans to meet in 2009 and discuss the study more deeply. Dr. Kevin De Cock, director of WHO's HIV/AIDS department cautioned that “This is only a theoretical exercise." Though there are some negatives and unknowns to the newly released study the results show there is a possibility for an end to the AIDS epidemic.

Hand Gels - Should They Replace Soap Water?

LONDON, England (CNN) -- If you've ever shaken someone's hand, only to watch them slather themselves with hand sanitizer afterwards, you're not alone.

The little bottles of hand gel are everywhere you look, especially now during the prime cold and flu season in the U.S. and Europe. Even world leaders, it turns out, are equally concerned with fighting pesky germs.

President Bush offered Barack Obama hand sanitizer the first time they met at the White House in 2005, according to an account in Obama's book "Audacity of Hope."

Obama recalls shaking hands with Bush, who then "turned to an aide nearby, who squirted a big dollop of hand sanitizer in the president's hand." "Good stuff. Keeps you from getting colds," Bush said, according to Obama's account.

These days, you're likely to encounter a bottle of the "good stuff" just about everywhere. Eating at a restaurant, flying or taking public transport? Not without an application of germ-fighting gel first.

Here we answer five key questions about the hand gels that have become so ubiquitous in our lives.

What's the big deal? Fears over dangerous bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA, have inspired a push towards more hygienic environments.

Thanksgiving Healthy Eating Tips

Thanksgiving only comes around once a year, so why not go ahead and splurge? Because gaining weight during the holiday season is a national pastime. Year after year, most of us pack on at least a pound (some gain more) during the holidays -- and keep the extra weight permanently.

But Thanksgiving does not have to sabotage your weight, experts say. With a little know-how, you can satisfy your desire for traditional favorites and still enjoy a guilt-free Thanksgiving feast. After all, being stuffed is a good idea only if you are a turkey!

Get Active

Create a calorie deficit by exercising to burn off extra calories before you ever indulge in your favorite foods, suggests Connie Diekman, MEd, RD, former president of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

"'Eat less and exercise more' is the winning formula to prevent weight gain during the holidays," Diekman says. "Increase your steps or lengthen your fitness routine the weeks ahead and especially the day of the feast."

Make fitness a family adventure, recommends Susan Finn, PhD, RD, chair of the American Council on Fitness and Nutrition: "Take a walk early in the day and then again after dinner. It is a wonderful way for families to get physical activity and enjoy the holiday together."

Eat Breakfast

While you might think it makes sense to save up calories for the big meal, experts say eating a small meal in the morning can give you more control over your appetite. Start your day with a small but satisfying breakfast -- such as an egg with a slice of whole-wheat toast, or a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk -- so you won't be starving when you arrive at the gathering.

"Eating a nutritious meal with protein and fiber before you arrive takes the edge off your appetite and allows you to be more discriminating in your food and beverage choices," says Diekman.

Lighten Up

Whether you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner or bringing a few dishes to share, make your recipes healthier with less fat, sugar, and calories.

"There is more sugar and fat in most recipes than is needed, and no one will notice the difference if you skim calories by using lower calorie ingredients," says Diekman.

Her suggestions:

Use fat-free chicken broth to baste the turkey and make gravy.
Use sugar substitutes in place of sugar and/or fruit purees instead of oil in baked goods.
Reduce oil and butter wherever you can.
Try plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in creamy dips, mashed potatoes, and casseroles.

Police Your Portions

Thanksgiving tables are bountiful and beautiful displays of traditional family favorites. Before you fill your plate, survey the buffet table and decide what you're going to choose. Then select reasonable-sized portions of foods you cannot live without.

"Don't waste your calories on foods that you can have all year long," suggests Diekman. "Fill your plate with small portions of holiday favorites that only come around once a year so you can enjoy desirable, traditional foods."

Skip the Seconds.
Try to resist the temptation to go back for second helpings.
"Leftovers are much better the next day, and if you limit yourself to one plate, you are less likely to overeat and have more room for a delectable dessert," Diekman says.
Choose the Best Bets on the Buffet.
While each of us has our own favorites, keep in mind that some holiday foods are better choices than others.
"White turkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, defatted gravy, and pumpkin pie tend to be the best bets because they are lower in fat and calories," says Diekman. But she adds that, "if you keep your portions small, you can enjoy whatever you like."

Slowly Savor

Eating slowly, putting your fork down between bites, and tasting each mouthful is one of the easiest ways to enjoy your meal and feel satisfied with one plate full of food, experts say. Choosing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, salads, and other foods with lots of water and fiber add to the feeling of fullness.
Spread out the food and fun all day long. At the Finn family Thanksgiving gathering, they schedule dessert after a walk, while watching a movie together.

"We eat midday, and instead of another meal at dinnertime, we continue the feast with dessert a few hours after the main meal," Finn explains.

Go Easy on Alcohol

Don't forget those alcohol calories that can add up quickly.

"Have a glass of wine or a wine spritzer and between alcoholic drinks, (or) enjoy sparkling water," says Diekman. "this way you stay hydrated, limit alcohol calories, and stay sober."

Be Realistic

The holiday season is a time for celebration. With busy schedules and so many extra temptations, this is a good time to strive for weight maintenance instead of weight loss.

"Shift from a mindset of weight loss to weight maintenance," says Finn. "You will be ahead of the game if you can avoid gaining any weight over the holidays."

Focus on Family and Friends

Thanksgiving is not just about the delicious bounty of food. It's a time to celebrate relationships with family and friends.

"The main event should be family and friends socializing, spending quality time together, not just what is on the buffet," says Finn.

High-Protein Meals Burn More Fat According to Study

Are high protein meals good for you? If you're overweight a new study indicates high protein meals allow you to burn more fat. The study is specific to overweight people as you will soon find out why. However, high protein diets may be helpful for everyone because of the properties and how protein is metabolized and converted in the body as compared to carbohydrates and fats.

Research has shown that overweight people are less efficient at burning fat after a meal than thinner people are. In the new study, Australian researchers looked at whether the protein composition of a meal affects that weight-related gap.

They found that overweight men and women burned more post-meal fat when they ate a high-protein breakfast and lunch than when they had lower-protein meals. That is, the added protein seemed to modify the fat-burning deficit seen in heavy individuals.

"Our research suggests that people with higher body fat burn fat better after a high-protein meal than people with lower levels of body fat," lead researcher Dr. Marijka Batterham, of the University of Wollongong in New South Wales told Reuters Health.

A number of studies have suggested that high-protein diets may help people shed weight more easily — possibly, in part, because protein suppresses appetite better than fat or carbohydrates do.

The current study did not look at weight loss, so it's not possible to tell whether the increased fat-burning seen in overweight participants would translate into fewer pounds over time, Batterham said.

But answering that question, she said, will be the next step.

The findings, published in the journal Nutrition & Dietetics, are based on 18 adults whose post-meal metabolism was tested on 3 separate days. The average age was 40 years, eight subjects were overweight, six subjects had a normal weight, and four were obese.

On day one, they were given a "control" breakfast and lunch composed of 58 percent carbohydrates and 14 percent protein. On the other 2 days, their meals were more balanced, with about one third of calories coming from protein and another third from carbohydrates.

In the 8 hours after the control meal, the investigators found that overweight and obese participants burned less fat than their thinner counterparts did. But that gap was closed when participants ate the higher-protein meals.

The protein-rich meals contained low-fat dairy, lean meat and eggs, along with bread and vegetables as carbohydrate sources. Batterham said she and her colleagues are now testing whether vegetarian sources of protein have similar effects on overweight adults' fat metabolism.

In general, experts recommend that people looking to bulk up the protein in their diets choose their sources carefully — eschewing bacon and butter in favor of foods like fish, poultry, low-fat dairy, beans and nuts.

Same Sex Doner Means Higher Transplant Survival Rate

A new study indicates that if your transplant doner has similar characteristics as you it may increase your survival and the body may accept it more. The study finds that size, hormones, sex and immune system all play a role in the acceptance rate of transplants. This makes sense doesn't it? A 5 year old girls body will not accept a 40 year old males organ as well as it would accept a 7 year old girls. It's only logical to look for a similar match although it is in many cases hard to come by.

Turns out men and women really are different at heart: New research finds that heart transplant patients have better odds of survival and a lower risk of rejection if they get organs from donors of the same sex.Size may be part of the explanation. Men's hearts are bigger than women's and have greater pumping capacity, and men who get men's hearts fare better. But doctors think differences in hormones or immune systems between the sexes may also play a role.

The study was paid for by the federal government and led by Dr. Eric Weiss, a cardiac surgery researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He presented his findings Wednesday at an American Heart Association conference.

Unfortunately for many patients, the findings won't make much of a difference. About 2,700 Americans are waiting for a heart, and only 2,200 heart transplants are done each year — some of them second operations for people whose first transplant failed, according to UNOS, the United Network for Organ Sharing, which manages the nation's transplant system.

The average wait for a heart is 108 days for women and 119 for men. Three-fourths of heart transplants are done in men, so by necessity, many must receive organs from the opposite sex.

Smaller earlier studies have found hints that gender differences may play a role in other types of transplants, such as lungs or kidneys, but this is the largest by far to find an effect.

Weiss used UNOS records on 18,240 heart transplants between 1998 and 2007. Among the recipients 77 percent of the men and 51 percent of the women were of the same gender as their donors.

Male-to-male transplants most successful
The best results were seen in male-to-male transplants. The worst were in men who received hearts from women.

When the donor was bigger than the recipient, the sex difference did not affect survival. But when the donor was smaller, people did not fare as well.

"The organ may not have the strength to supply blood to the body," Weiss explained.

But the donor's gender made a difference even after size was taken into account, he found.

Matching donor and recipient by gender led to:

a 13 percent lower risk of organ rejection in the first year;
a 14 percent lower risk of rejection throughout the study, which had an average follow-up of more than three years;
a 24 percent drop in the risk of dying in the first 30 days after transplant;
and a 20 percent lower risk of dying after one year.

Why the difference? Doctors are not certain. But Dr. Maryl Johnson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said women who have been pregnant generally have slightly worse outcomes from transplants because their immune systems have been "revved up" from carrying foreign genes from their partners through the fetus.

As for the findings, "it's a huge data set — I don't think we can disregard it," but the issue needs more study, said Johnson, who heads a UNOS panel that sets policies for heart transplants.

Great American Smokeout Challenge

In November The American Cancer Society host the Great American Smokeout Challange. It's used as a way to challenge the 45 million smokers to quite smoking. Although it is hard these for these people to stop the addiction, the U.S. is really pushing it by increasing the number of public places that don't allow smoking each year. Also there have been improvments in getting people to quite with advances in technology. The econimic pressure adds yet another problem, with cigarette prices being an unaffordable 'neccessity' for many smokers.

November 20th, marks the 33rd annual Smokeout where members of the American Cancer Society strive to get as many smokers to quit as they can by offering free resources to make quitting easier. Started in 1976, the Smokeout encourages people to stop smoking for one day out of the year in the hopes that one clean day will inspire smokers to quit for good. ACS has a great success rate with over 44 percent of American smokers who have quit for at least one day in the past year.

By establishing the Quitline* in 2000, people struggling to stop smoking are able to use the toll free hotline to speak to a trained counselor in order to receive educated advice and confidential counseling about their addiction. The Quitline has shown to more than double someone’s chances of quitting and has already given support to more than 380,000 smokers. The ACS website also lays out resources for smokers and their families and loved ones to start a long-term plan to stop the nicotine addiction.

Social networking sites have also proved to be helpful in encouraging smokers to quit by getting friends and family actively involved in their progress and support says a study from the New England Journal of Medicine. A spokesman from ACS says, “…social networks are helpful in quitting smoking…. Friends and family can help the most by being aware and supportive of the struggle to quit, and the American Cancer Society has resources to help them show support for their loved one who is trying to quit.”

5 Ways to Prevent Alzheimer’s

With the increasing occurrence of Alzheimer’s it’s important to know what you can do to prevent the disease from occurring. By doing a few simple things you can significantly prevent Alzheimer’s. If you’re not familiar with the disease a simple explanation is you become more forgetful, symptoms are not the exact same for everyone with the disease, but having Alzheimer’s can affect the amount of care and attention you may need.

Blanche Danick may be 86 years old, but she's pretty hip. She keeps up with all the latest health news, and a while back, she called her daughter wanting to know whether she should start taking the herb ginkgo biloba. She'd heard it might stave off Alzheimer's disease.

"I told her not to bother, that it wouldn't make much of a difference," says her daughter, Edythe London, a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles. "On the basis of what I've read, I don't think it staves off dementia."

London's advice makes a lot of sense, according to a study out this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Ginkgo is a top-selling herb and has been hailed by some as a memory-booster, but the new University of Pittsburgh study found it didn't help prevent Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia in more than 3,000 elderly study subjects.

Ginkgo manufacturers say this isn't the first -- or the last -- word on the herb. "There is a significant body of scientific and clinical evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of ginkgo extract for both cognitive function and improved circulation," said Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council.

London's still skeptical. "But I do tell my mother there are other things she can do," says London, who's studied the brain and aging. "I tell her to go out and do things and see people every day and be active." Studies have shown that physical exercise, the kind that keeps the heart healthy, also keeps the brain healthy, according to the National Institutes of Health's Cognitive and Emotional Health Project. People are like rats, London says. "If you put a rat in a cage by itself, it won't do well on cognitive tests. But if you give it toys and put other rats in its cage, they're going to be smarter rats."

In addition to playing with toys and hanging out with your fellow rats, here are five other tips for keeping your memory sharp. London says they help work on memory centers of the brain, including the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, identified in the diagram above.

1. Antioxidants
London makes sure her mother takes vitamins A, C, and E. They're antioxidants, which prevent cell damage and are believed by some to slow down diseases of aging. "There are studies that suggest antioxidants might prevent dementia," she says.

2. Fish oil supplements
Dr. Gary Small, director of the UCLA Center on Aging, says aging brains show signs of inflammation, and fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Phosphatidylserine supplements
Phosphatidylserine is a lipid found naturally in the body. Small says he's not 100 percent convinced these supplements will help stave off dementia, but they're worth a try. "If I start having memory problems when I get older, I'll give them a trial run and see if they help," says Small, author of the new book "iBrain: Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind."

4. Curry
Small, who's 57, says that as he gets older, he might also try eating more foods with curry in them. "Some studies in Singapore show that those who ate curry once a week had better memory scores," he said.

5. Cross-training your brain
"Our brains can be made stronger through exercise," says Andrew Carle, assistant professor of in the department of health administration and policy at George Mason University. "In the same way physical exercise can delay many of the effects of aging on the body, there's some evidence cognitive exercise can at least delay the onset of Alzheimer's."

But Carle says it's not enough to do just one kind of brain exercise. "Doing a crossword puzzle every day is good, but it's the equivalent of doing only pushups -- your arms will get strong, but not the rest of your body."

He recommends doing other activities in addition, such as computing numbers in your head instead of using a calculator, or using one of the "brain gym" computer games designed to enhance brain function.

As for London, who's 60, she thinks her best bet at staving off dementia doesn't come in a bottle, or on a dinner plate, or in a computer game. "I'm going to keep working on my research, and surround myself with young people, and do a lot of exercise," she says. "I'm going to be a happy old lady. That in and of itself is going to do a lot of good for my brain."

How Much Exercise is Enough?

According to CNN the government indicates that most adults need 2 ½ hours of exercise a week. That would mean that you could exercise a half hour for 5 days a week. While this is a good start that the government realizes that it is important to exercise regularly, they don’t seem to do enough.

They simply lack the ability to emphasize the importance of exercise. A while back when the surgeon general came out with the statement that smoking is hazardous to your health, it made a huge impact on many Americans, you just don’t see the government pushing exercise like they should.

The truth is exercise offers more benefits to your body than anything else, including the choice to smoke. The amount of exercise you do will directly relate to your risk of cancer, heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other diseases and sicknesses. There are also countless other benefits of exercise that are often overlooked.

How much exercise do I need?
The amount of exercise you need depends largely on your age and your level of fitness. Children and teenagers need at least an hour per day according to the government. For the children and teenagers more vigorous activities are recommended.

As for adults it all depends on your fitness level, if you are in great shape then vigorous activity is recommended. While people in poor fitness should start out slow with moderate levels of activity. The point is be safe don’t go overboard and get so sore that you never want to exercise again.

This is huge it is absolutely essential that you start out slow, many people quite after only exercising one or two days because they were to sore. The key is to ease into it and make sure you’re doing it correctly; this will reduce the risk of injury and improve your overall enjoyment of exercise. This causes you to be more successful long term.

Health Insurers May Accept All Applicants

Expect to see changes in the health insurance industry as now they will have to except everyone no matter what disabilities or illnesses they may have. Also, congress may require all Americans to have health insurance. This is good for the health care provides as they will have more patients. Bad for the people who can't afford health insurance. Either way getting health insurance will now be easier for those needing expensive treatments and having large medical bills.

The proposals, put forward by the insurers’ two main trade associations, have the potential to reshape and advance the debate over universal health insurance just as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office.

In separate actions, the two trade groups, America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, announced their support for guaranteed coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, in conjunction with an enforceable mandate for individual coverage.

In the absence of such a mandate, insurers said, many people will wait until they become sick before they buy insurance.

Members of Congress said Wednesday that they wanted to pass legislation next year, as proposed by Mr. Obama, to expand coverage and rein in health care costs.

The new position taken by the insurance industry — the industry that helped sink President Bill Clinton’s plan for universal health coverage in 1994 — could ease the way for passage of such legislation.

But the industry’s position differs from that of Mr. Obama in one significant respect. Insurers want the government to require everyone to have and maintain insurance. By contrast, Mr. Obama would, at least initially, apply the requirement only to children.

In the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, that was a major point of contention between Mr. Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Mrs. Clinton said that everyone should be required to have coverage. Mr. Obama said he wanted to be certain that insurance was affordable and available to all before considering such a broad requirement.

Asked on Wednesday for reaction to the insurance industry’s proposals, Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the Obama transition team, said, “We are declining comment.” Mr. Vietor cited Mr. Obama’s view that “we have only one president at a time.”

In many cases, people with cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injuries or other serious afflictions have found that they cannot obtain health insurance at any price.

Research suggests that some insurers turn down 10 percent or more of applicants for individual coverage because of their pre-existing medical conditions.

Donald G. Hamm Jr., president of Assurant Health, explained why the industry thought an individual mandate must be coupled with any ban on such underwriting practices.

“In the individual market, people can choose whether or not to apply for coverage,” Mr. Hamm said in an interview. “If they know they can obtain coverage at any time, many will wait until they get sick to apply for it. That increases the price for everyone.”

Insurers say that is just what happened in several states that prohibited insurers from turning down applicants on the basis of their health status.

The new policy statements are silent on two important issues: how to enforce an individual mandate and how to regulate insurance prices, or premiums.

While insurers would be required to sell insurance to any applicant, nothing would guarantee that consumers could afford it. Rate regulation promises to be a highly contentious issue, since it pits the financial interests of insurers against those of consumers.

At present, insurance premiums are generally regulated by the states and often vary according to a person’s age, sex, medical history and place of residence within a state. In the individual market in most states, a person with a history of serious or chronic illness can be charged much more than a healthy person of the same age and sex.

Mr. Hamm, a member of the board of America’s Health Insurance Plans, said the group might offer recommendations to define “a fair and appropriate rating structure.”

Alissa Fox, a vice president of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, said the individual mandate was an indispensable corollary of any approach forbidding insurers to reject applicants because of health status.

“Insurance works best when everyone is in the pool,” Ms. Fox said. “You need healthy people in the insurance pool to help pay for sicker individuals who are much more motivated to buy coverage.”

Insurers did not say how the government should enforce an individual mandate: whether through fines, tax penalties or other means. Politicians have also been reluctant to specify details of enforcement, which could prove highly unpopular.

Alli Weight Loss Drug - Not Selling Enough

One reason may be because it is recommended that Alli users also include diet and exercise to ensure weight loss. Alli, the first and only over-the-counter FDA-approved weight loss drug, has not hit the sales mark for its first year. The drug was approved in 2007 for over-the-counter marketing as a weight loss aid. Glazosmithkline, the creators of Alli, recommend the drug be used with a diet low in fat, a daily multivitamin, and exercise program.

Glaxosmithkline spent 150 million on marketing campaigns for Alli during its first year. Their marketing campaign has focused on the Alli plan. The plan is to live life in a new way with adjustments to eating habits and exercise regimen. The marketing plan seemed to miss the mark. The original sales projections were 5 to 6 million annually, but Alli’s first year was short a million. The company says the product is not for everyone, but is an option and can help to increase weight loss by 50 percent. (During clinical trials, 2 to 3 pounds for every 5 pounds lost through diet and exercise was reported lost in patients using Alli, although almost half of the patients involved in the trial reported gastrointestinal side effects.)

Alli prevents absorption of a quarter of fat that is eaten. One fat gram has double the calories of protein and carbohydrates. Therefore, while taking Alli and eating a reduced calorie low fat diet Glaxosmithkline feels Alli could really make a difference in weight while limiting the total calories entering the system. However, Alli pamphlets state that the drug is only expected to help lose 5 to 10 pound in 6 months. Some dieters feel the small amount of weight loss could be accomplished by cutting out a few soft drinks weekly without taking the diet pill

Alli’s side effects of leakages and oily discharge that can cause soiled underwear can be deterring. Prior to the drug launch there was marketing materials for the new drug that stressed the importance of keeping meals under 15 grams of fat to avoid soiled underwear. Some pamphlets even recommended starting the program when off of work. Now the company has began to state that the side effects can be avoided with the proper use of the drug.

Why would the 1st FDA-approved weight loss drug not blow the projected numbers out of sight? It could be because change is a challenge for most people and the company recommends that anyone taking the pill also adopts exercise and good low-fat eating habits.

New Discovery Could Improve Tracking and Treatment of Cancer

A newly discovered blood biomarker that contains information about cancer tumors could lead to major advancement in the tracking and treatment of cancer. Tiny membrane-covered sacs are released from tumor cells and circulate freely in the blood. These sacs carry genetic information about the tumor from which they came. This information presents a new way to track, and possibly someday, treat cancer.

Xandra Breakefield of Massachusetts General Hospital, and her team, led by Johan Skog, conducted the new study. Breakefield described the contents of the membrane-covered sacs, known as exosomes, by stating, “They contain a little piece of the tumor cell in the blood stream. If you just look at these packets, you basically know what kind of mutations are in the tumor cell.” She explained that the information contained in exosomes about a cancer could offer a way to choose the best therapy, monitor a patient’s response to treatment, and possibly means to deliver therapies back to the tumor. She described the discovery as a “whole new concept of cell communication we didn't know tumors used.”

Breakefield acknowledged that for most forms of cancer, there is currently no reliable way to know what genetic mutations are contained in a tumor other than to draw a blood sample or perform a biopsy. Most current blood tests, including the PSA (prostate specific antigen) test to detect prostate cancer, check only for elevated levels of a specific protein. However, the use of exosomes may enable doctors to obtain specific information about a cancer from a blood test because they are blood biomarkers.

According to Skog in a telephone interview, various types of cells release exosomes as part of common cell-to-cell communication. Similarly, some types of tumors shed exosomes that contain proteins that have the capability of altering their environment to allow for more favorable conditions for tumor growth. “It's a form of cell communication that normal cells use but tumor cells use with a vengeance,” Skog said.

During the study, researchers analyzed exosomes shed by cells of glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Within the contents of these exosomes were fragments of the genetic messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA). Cell messengers that are associated with cell growth, immune response and the construction of new blood vessels were found.

The research group then exposed the exosomes to normal cells and the tumor RNA transported its genetic message into them. According to Breakefield, this is important information to know since no one had realized before that the tumor cells could communicate with their surroundings externally.

The research team also gathered and analyzed both blood and tissue samples from 25 patients suffering from brain cancer. Tumor exosomes were found in both types of samples. In addition, in the samples of two patients, a specific genetic mutation in the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene was detected that had been missed by a surgical biopsy.

The development of a blood test will be the first undertaking for utilizing the technology. However, Skog believes in the possibilities for use of the exosomes to deliver therapies to the cancer. “It is known that the effects of some anticancer drugs depend on a tumor's genetic mutational profile, so our results have broad implications for personalized medicine,” Skog explained. “Detecting mutational profiles through a noninvasive blood test could allow us to monitor how a tumor's genetic makeup changes in response to therapy, which may necessitate changes in treatment strategy,” he said.

The technology has been licensed to Exosome Diagnostics, Inc., by Massachusetts General Hospital. Skog has been appointed director of research at Exosome Diagnostics in addition to maintaining his position with Massachusetts General.

The findings of study appear in the journal Nature Cell Biology.
