The Ayurvedic approach to life involves listening to and addressing the unique needs of your body, recognizing and balancing your mental and emotional states and deepening your connection with your spirit, your essential self.</p>
<p>The raw food diet is based around the principle that eating a diet high in raw food will normalise and alkalise your body. This, in turn, connects the mind with the body; thus, Ayurveda and the Raw Food diet are very similar.</p>
<p>This article will hopefully provide a brief guidance on how you could connect the two in a way that is optimal to your health.</p>
<p>In Ayurveda, the idea is that you eat according to your dosha; vata, pitta and kapha.<br />
Vata is composed of the elements of air and ether<br />
Pitta is composed of the elements of fire and water<br />
Kapha is composed of the elements of water and earth</p>
<p>Vata types are generally thin and find it hard to gain weight. Vatas need to get sufficient rest and not overdo things, as they can tire easily.</p>
<p>Pitta types are generally medium sized and well proportioned. They also tend to be intelligent, with a sharp wit.</p>
<p>Kapha types tend to have sturdy, heavy frames. They are prone to gain weight easily. They often tend to have a positive outlook on life.</p>
<p>So, what does this mean, and how does it apply to you?<br />
In Ayurveda, it is believed that each person is governed by one dominant dosha and you should eat according to that dosha. However, this article is concerned with Ayurveda and Raw Food, so I will only mention the foods that coincide with both these diets.<br />

Vata<br />
Balances: Sweet fruits, apricots, avocado, bananas, berries, grapes, melons, asparagus, beets, cucumber, garlic, radishes, zucchini.<br />
Aggravates: Dried fruits, apples, cranberries, pears, watermelons, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, raw onions.</p>
<p>Pitta<br />
Balances: Sweet fruits, avocado, coconut, figs, mango, prunes, sweet and bitter vegetables, cabbage, cucumber, okra, potatoes.<br />
Aggravates: Sour fruits, berries, bananas, plums, oranges, lemon, pungent vegetables, garlic, onions.</p>
<p>Kapha<br />
Balances: Apples, apricots, berries, cherries, cranberries, mangos, peaches, pungent and bitter vegetables, broccoli, celery, garlic, onion.<br />
Aggravates: Sweet and sour fruits, bananas, coconut, melons, papaya, sweet and juicy vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes.</p>
<p>There are many suggestions in Ayurveda, which are very easily translated to a Raw Food Diet.<br />
Such suggestions are:</p>
<p>Eat mainly seasonal fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains<br />
Eat according to your constitution, or dosha<br />
Fast for one day every two weeks<br />
Establish a regular eating routine<br />
Eliminate or limit caffeinated, carbonated and alcoholic beverages from your life<br />
Drink herbal tea, fruit and vegetable juices</p>

<p>Here are some mouth problems common in diabetics.</p>
<p><strong>Plaque</strong></p>
<p>Plaque is, of course, a problem for many people, not just diabetics. But it&#8217;s caused by starches and sugars, and of course we have more than our share of those! So diabetics are highly prone to plaque.</p>
<p><strong>Dry mouth</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes my mouth is so dry in the morning I can hardly speakI&#8217;m sure you know how that feels. But it&#8217;s more than just inconvenient, it&#8217;s dangerous to the health of our mouths. You see, saliva washes away many of the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Dry mouth cuts the amount of saliva available for this job, so the result is more cavities and gum disease. Dry mouth sometimes also creates inflammation of the soft tissue in the mouth, making eating difficult and unpleasant.<br />
<span id="more-723"></span><br />
While there are artificial saliva substitutes, which your dentist can tell you about, you can usually stimulate your own saliva by sucking on a sugar-free hard candy. I like no-sugar-added Ricola for this purpose. And of course, drinking water helps.</p>
<p><strong>Fungal infections</strong></p>
<p>Not only do we diabetics have less saliva than we need, but the saliva we do have is high in sugar content, so it&#8217;s double trouble for us. This can cause a fungal infection called candiasis, commonly known as thrush. It produces sore red or white spots in the mouth. Medication can help though, so ask your dentist.</p>
<p>As a diabetic, you must pay great attention to oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss daily. Examine your gums for signs of problemsand always visit your dentist at least twice a year.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every year the seasonal flu kills about 36,000 people and sends 200,000 to the hospital, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every year during &#8220;flu season&#8221; (typically starting around Thanksgiving and peaking around Christmas) there&#8217;s a rush to get flu shots; especially among the elderly, the ill, and the very young, the concern is well-grounded.</p>
<p>For most sufferers &#8212; between 5 and 20 percent of the population every year &#8212; the flu brings fever, headaches, fatigue, aches and pains, stomach distress and other symptoms that make life miserable for days.</p>
<p>Rumor of a pandemic flu outbreak has brought increased concern. It&#8217;s important to understand exactly what this means, rather than just being fearful of something arriving at the nearest airport to which you have no defense.</p>
<p>Viruses are the invading organisms responsible for most epidemic illnesses. Virus-caused illnesses range from the common cold to cold sores, warts, measles and chicken pox, hepatitis, West Nile virus, the &#8220;ordinary&#8221; flu, and AIDS. Most recently, it&#8217;s the Avian flu that has people on edge.</p>
<p>We can help prevent the passage of viruses from person to person by avoiding large indoor gatherings of people (right&#8230;during the holiday season&#8230;) and exercising good sanitary practices &#8211; washing hands often, using tissues, ventilation of rooms, etc.</p>
<p>Viruses are known to be resistant to pharmaceutical antibiotics. Many public health experts have pinned their hopes on the antiviral drug Tamiflu to fight the avian flu, for example, only to find that resistent cases are emerging. A flu virus mutates frequently and sometimes a new strain emerges that humans have not been exposed to. If the strain spreads easily between humans, it can cause widespread death and overwhelm global health resources. (It&#8217;s important to realize that the avian flu is NOT passed easily between humans; it seems to mostly be passed from poultry to humans.) A flu virus from half a world away is one to which you will most likely have no immunity, unlike the local ones you contact, and the mutations can leave us even more defenseless.</p>
<p>Enter the powerful healing properties of the oil of the tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea tree oil has various uses in medical treatments because of its triple antibiotic features: it&#8217;s an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal agent. Just because a substance is naturally-occuring with no known side effects, does not mean it can&#8217;t be effective. Tea tree was an important medicinal for native Australians. They drank tea made of the leaves and applied tea tree poultices to treat wounds, cuts, and various skin disorders. In 1920, Dr. A. Penfold tested the oil&#8217;s properties for the first time. He discovered that tea tree oil was 12 times more potent than the accepted antiseptic at the time, carbolic acid. Dr. Penfold&#8217;s research prompted further testing in the following decades, contributing to its increasing use by the public.<br />

Tea tree oil is a valuable alternative to pharmaceuticals. Its complex chemical composition makes it extremely difficult for germs to develop resistance. Traditional antibiotics possess more simple chemical structures to which germs can easily develop immunity. Tea tree oil is readily absorbed and it continues to block germ growth at the site for several days after the initial application. The oil is a proven immuno-stimulant and anti-viral agent; it is even currently being tested in the treatment of AIDS.</p>
<p>You should apply a small test amount to the skin before using it for the first time, as with any product, there is always the chance of sensitivity in any particular individual. Adding a couple drops to a vaporizer and inhaling the steam helps to freshen and disinfect the air, killing germs that infect the sinuses and lungs, and opening clogged respiratory passages. The oil can be rubbed into the skin at full strength, or mixed with a carrier oil or lotion. The oil can also be added to a hot bath and is then assimilated both through the skin and the nasal passages.</p>
<p>Personal use of tea tree oil is not to be substituted for advice from your family doctor. It is, however, useful in prevention and as a first aid treatment. And there is anecdotal and scientific evidence of truly amazing results using this phenomenal substance.</p>

<p>Frequently we become objective (to lose 1 kilo every week) and if in one week it lowers solely half kilo or what is worse, nothing happens, I get frustrated and that can lead me to no longer continue with the plan I set and then I just quit it.</p>
<p>Even there are times the people unconsciously set goals that are too hard to obtain so that I can leave it quickly, nobody (and I include myself) wants to follow a diet!!!</p>
<p>We make it because it is healthy but when we choose what it tastes better.</p>
<p>Does anybody likes lettuce?</p>
<p>If you want to follow your plan you need to set reasonable and reachable goals. A study stated that when people lower 500g per week, those people maintain long term descent.</p>
<p>It is the best objective that we can intend, to lower 500g for week and knowledge that some week won&#8217;t lose weight. If you want to lower quick we can also help you, of course, but I have to be conscious that in some moment losing weight rate wont be the one as desired. And I don&#8217;t want to frustrate myself for that reason, the following week I will achieve the results.</p>
<p>The body is not something that reacts mathematically, the weight it depends on many factors, as the retention of liquids, the intestinal evacuation, the time in which weigh myself, that ingested the previous night, if I ingested pizza or another very salted food I will surely retain liquids, the same as if I began with an intense activity the previous day.<br />

Another cause of failure in a diet is to be very strict with what you have to eat.</p>
<p>If I go to a party and I don&#8217;t eat anything, or same at home if I am extremely strict it is very difficult to be able to maintain the plan and in the first time that comes out, you will think I cannot make diet&#8221; or &#8220;this is not for me&#8221;, frustrating me once again, abandoning and feeling badly.</p>
<p>These 2 forms of thinking &#8220;if I don&#8217;t lower 1 kilo per week every week Im not doing anything good at all&#8221; or &#8220;I cant make the diet because I ate an ice cream.&#8221; are forms in that consciously or unconsciously plot us the diet to ourselves.</p>
<p>In fact I don&#8217;t want to make diet. Let us accept it!</p>
<p>Nobody wants to make it, but they want to lose weight. Unfortunately these 2 factors are really hard to join them together and make it work|Regrettably the 2 things join are not able to work together}.</p>
<p>Perhaps it is time that you start making choices, and make decisions in order to choose which path you want to go. By just choosing to remain healthy, you will get results.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When most people think of Celadrin, what comes to mind is usually basic information that&#8217;s not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there&#8217;s a lot more to Celadrin than just the basics.</p>
<p>Celadrin  or cetyl myristoleate &#8211; is one of a number of supplements taken by arthritis sufferers, but it really came into its own recently when the government withdrew popular painkillers like Vioxx from the market due to health concerns. This left many arthritis suffers with no option but to consider an operation to relieve their pain. An operation  or a supplement like Celadrin? Many decided to try the less invasive option first.</p>
<p>Traditionally, doctors have not been keen to offer supplements to their patients, but many are increasingly coming to see that products like Celadrin may be a suitable alternative for those people who for some reason cannot &#8211; or choose not to &#8211; have an operation.</p>
<p>A scientist who was trying to understand why he couldnt induce arthritis into mice discovered Celadrin about a decade ago. It contains a blend of eight stable fatty acids that can easily penetrate cell membranes and by providing lubrication to the cell membranes and decreasing inflammation it supports joint health. In fact, research has shown that it definitely improves not only the range of motion in a joint affected by arthritis, but balance, strength and endurance were also improved.</p>
<p>Placebo-controlled studies in 2002 showed that the subjects were able to perform several day-to-day functions like climbing stairs and even simply walking that had been painfully difficult before. Some subjects were even able to return to jogging, an exercise that had been impossible for some time due to the pain and stiffness experienced from arthritis.</p>
<p>Is everything making sense so far? If not, I&#8217;m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.</p>
<p>University bio-chemist Dr. Daniel Gallaher PhD, prescribes Celadrin for many of his patients and has had no side-effects reported. The pills may need be taken for at least two months before improvement is noticed, though in some cases this time is considerably shorter. Some patients have noted a dramatic improvement within a few days of applying the lotion.<br />

Daniel Hoeffal MD, advises his patients to take the product scientifically. That is, no more than one supplement at a time and stick to the instructions on the bottle. If several supplements are taken at once, there is no way of determining which was the one responsible for giving relief.</p>
<p>Celadrin comes in pill form and topical lotion and is quite affordable compared to some other supplements, with the pills costing about $12.00 a bottle and the lotion half that. It is available as a stand-alone product, or combined with other products such as Glucosamine</p>

<p>&#8220;It is incorrect and damaging to characterize eating whole foods as a luxury only the rich can afford,&#8221; said Colette Heimowitz, vice president of education and research at Atkins Health &amp; Medical Information Services. &#8220;While this notion plays into the pockets of manufacturers of processed foods, it couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth. Unfortunately, by perpetuating this myth about whole foods, those parties responsible support unhealthy long-term eating habits.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Atkins Nutritional Approach and similar regimens have demonstrated their weight loss and health benefits in numerous studies, Heimowitz said. For instance, a six-month study published in the November 2004 Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cardiology demonstrated that a low-carb diet significantly reduces body weight and decreases the level of triglycerides, LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood glucose, and increases the HDL (good) cholesterol.</p>
<p>&#8220;One of the best aspects of the Atkins Nutritional Approach is that it is a program that can fit into almost any budget,&#8221; Heimowitz said. &#8220;It is important for people to realize that with a little ingenuity and creativity in the grocery store and kitchen, they can reap tremendous health benefits from whole foods without having to prepare elaborate gourmet meals.&#8221;</p>
<p>Steak, often linked with following Atkins, is not the only available source of protein.</p>
<p>Lower-priced cuts of meat and poultry, ideal in hearty stews and casseroles, for example, offer the same nutritional value as more expensive prime and choice cuts.<br />

Canned fish and less pricey selections such as cod and catfish also can help you control your carbs on a budget. Tofu, another valuable source of protein, can bring diversity to meals without breaking the bank.</p>
<p>Frozen vegetables and fruits &#8212; provided that they have no added sugars &#8212; are typically less expensive than out-of-season fresh produce but still provide the same dietary value. Frozen broccoli, spinach and berries are great low-carbohydrate flavor enhancers.</p>

* I need time for me.<br />
* I want someone to hold me.<br />
* I want someone to talk to me.<br />
* I want someone to be my &#8220;nurse&#8221; for a little while.<br />
* I need someone to care about &#8220;me&#8221; for a change.<br />
* I want someone to make me feel better</p>
<p>Now that you understand what shes really saying, you have a couple of choices to make.  You pick the result you want from the following choices and carry out the instructions:</p>
<p>Result #1:  0% chance of S E X for the next several weeks</p>
<p>Tell her you despise the day you married her and that if there weren&#8217;t kids involved, you would dump her in a minute.  Then, ignore her while making it very clear you are extremely mad at her for not putting out.</p>
<p>Result #2:  10% chance of S E X tonight</p>
<p>Turn on your &#8220;best-behavior&#8221; and tell her you love her and that you understand how she feels.  Ask her if you can get her a cup of hot tea or something.  Then ask her if she would like for you to rub her feet.</p>
<p>The real point is that you are too late.  You didnt take responsibility for making sure she was turned on and ready by bed time.</p>
<p>Thats right!  As a man, you are the one who needs to take responsibility for turning your lady on so that she is ready for you.<br />

Unfortunately, you may well be too late to change anything for tonight.  But, the good news is that tomorrow is a new day.  Tomorrow, you can cause things to be different.</p>

<p>There is a lot a person can do such jogging or walking  in the morning, playing basketball or any other sport with friends but if a person wants to have muscles and look lean, the best thing to do will be to sign up and workout in a gym.</p>
<p>Just like taking any medicine, one should first consult the doctor before undergoing any form of exercise.</p>
<p>Physical exercise is beneficial because it helps maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.  It also makes a person feel happier and increases ones self esteem preventing one from falling into depression or anxiety. It has also shown to make a person with an active lifestyle live longer than a person who doesn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>The best exercise plan should have cardiovascular and weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio that will increase ones metabolism and make one either gain or lose weight.</p>
<p>A person who has never worked out before should do it gradually. Doing it too much for the first time can make one pull a muscle or have an injury making it worse. Endurance will never be built in a day and doing it repeatedly will surely be good to the person.</p>
<p>Focusing on certain portion in the body can help make it improve. A good example is going to the gym and doing a workout more often in a specific area such as the abs can give one a chest pack.</p>
<p>But beauty is not only about having muscles which is what people can see. It is also about enhancing the beauty within.</p>
<p>Here are some things one can do everyday to stay beautiful and healthy;</p>
<p>	Reading books and other reading material more often keeps the mind sharp just like working out keeps the body in shape.</p>
<p>	Work no matter what kind it is produces stress. One can reduce this by taking the time out to do something special like lying in a hot tub, shopping or watching a movie. Studies have shown it is reliever and helps one from looking haggardly.<br />

	Pollution is something people cannot control given the size of the problem. When one goes out, it is best to put some form of protection such as beauty products that contain antioxidants that protect the skin from damage. <p>	Another way to stay healthy is to give up some vices. Most people smoke and drink. Smoking has been proven to cause lung cancer and other diseases as well complications for women giving birth. Excessive drinking has also shown to do the same.</p>
<p>	For people who don&#8217;t smoke, it is best to stay away from people who do since studies have shown that nonsmokers are also at risk of developing cancer due to secondary smoke inhalation.</p>
<p>	Lastly, it is best to always start the day with a positive outlook. Just as studies have shown that exercise makes a person feel happier, smiling produces the same effect. A smile can do a lot and it is contagious in a positive sense. It brightens the day of not only one but others as well.</p>

<p>One major cause for concern is adverse effects on our hearts. Our unstable blood sugar levels can cause poor circulationa big step on the road to heart problems. Here are some things to watch for.</p>
<p><strong>Hypertension</strong></p>
<p>Diabetes often goes hand-in-hand with high blood pressure, or hypertension. In fact, your doctor will tell you that diabetics must work to get their blood pressure down even lower than other people. While a systolic pressure (the top number) of 140 might be acceptable for the general population, we diabetics should aim for 130 or lower. It&#8217;s all part of the battle against possible heart disease.</p>
<p><strong>Blood fats</strong></p>
<p>Cholesterol and tryglycerides, or blood fats, also need to be kept lower in diabetics. Lots of fruits and vegetables, fewer packaged or fried foods are your best bets for dietary blood fat control. Throw out that frying pan!</p>
<p><strong>Blood sugar</strong></p>
<p>Blood sugar levels need monitoring too, as consistently high levels damage blood vessels and can lead to cardiovascular difficulties.<br />

<strong>Weight level</strong></p>
<p>And of course you know it&#8217;s important to maintain a healthy weight. Why is that particularly important for us diabetics? First, if you are overweight your heart muscle needs to work harder to pump blood through your system. This weakens your blood vessels, which are then more susceptible to damage from fluctuating blood sugar levels. It&#8217;s a vicious cycle you don&#8217;t want to create.</p>
<p>Your heart is the main engine of your whole body, so you need to do everything possible to keep it in good shape. For the sake of a healthy heart, take control of your diabetes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anthrax. Smallpox. Plague. Diseases that can kill. Diseases that are now in the hands of terrorists. What if these diseases were released in your hometown, or the place where you work? What could you do if vaccines and treatments were in short supply or unavailable? Is there anything you can do now to prepare yourself and improve your chances of survival?</p>
<p>Herbalist Susun Weed recognizes the possibility of biological warfare and she is ready to cope with it. With her help, you too can be prepared with herbs and home remedies that you can use now to help avoid infection and to build a strong immune system. You can feel safer in these troubling times by learning about herbs that are effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and that can be used in conjunction with, or in place of (should there be a lack of) modern antibiotics.</p>
<p>Anthrax bacteria (<em>Bacillus anthracis</em>) enter the body through breaks in the skin or through the nose and lungs. Early symptoms (which may take up to a week to occur) include reddish-black sores on the skin or in the lymph nodes around the lungs. Hemorrhagic fever and death follows. Treated early, anthrax succumbs to antibiotics and most people (75-80 percent) recover completely.  Even without treatment, according to some sources, more than half of those infected survive. (Genetically-engineered varieties may kill up to 90 percent of untreated victims.) The inhaled variety is more lethal because the early symptoms of infection are easily ignored, delaying treatment past the point of most effect, and because pneumonia infections frequently complicate the recovery. Anthrax is not contagious; that is, it is not passed from person to person.</p>
<p>The antibiotic Cipro is one of the treatments approved by the US government for those definitely exposed to anthrax, but neither it nor any other antibiotic can prevent infection. It is dangerous to take antibiotics &#8220;just in case&#8221; for then they may not work when actually needed. Instead, try these home remedies.</p>
<p><strong>Salt</strong> is lethal to bacteria. The simplest home remedy for those worried about exposure to anthrax is to rinse your nose with salt (any kind will do) mixed into water. Taste your mixture to be certain it is very salty. Getting this up your nose can be accomplished by putting your nose into the salt solution and snorting it in, or you may wish to buy a &#8220;neti pot,&#8221; a device from India used to rinse the nasal passages. Afterwards, blow your nose and spit out any residue that runs into the mouth.</p>
<p><strong>Yarrow</strong> (<em>Achillea millefolium</em>) has been scientifically shown to kill all gram positive and gram negative bacteria. A small spray bottle of the tincture of the flowering tops can be used to spray the inside of the nose, killing any bacteria lurking there. Spraying tincture in your nose does sting a little and makes the eyes water, but don&#8217;t dilute it &#8211; the alcohol is antibacterial too.</p>
<p><strong>Garlic</strong> has been used to prevent infection for thousands of years; and it still works!  No need to upset your stomach (and loved ones) by eating it raw; cooked garlic retains its antibacterial powers, so long as you eat enough of it. During plague times, healers in some areas wore a &#8220;bird&#8217;s beak:&#8221; a stiff cone was made of paper or bark, stuffed with garlic and spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg), and tied on over the nose to help prevent contagion. That&#8217;s a little cumbersome for modern times, but inhaling the aroma of a cup of spicy tea (there are many blends available, or make your own) could help forestall anthrax.</p>
<p><strong>Medicinal mushrooms</strong> are not only immune system tonics, they possess antibacterial properties which make them ideal for preventing anthrax infection, according to expert Paul Stametes. A tincture or strong infusion of any shelf fungus with pores can be used, he says. If you prefer to buy your mushrooms, rather than hunt for them, look for <strong>reishii</strong> (Ganoderma lucidum) or <strong>shiitake</strong> (<em>Lentinus edodes</em>). Both are adaptogenic, revitalizing, regenerative, and able to directly suppress infection.  Side effects, even from large doses, are rare.</p>
<p>Essential oils are antibacterial, and some sources suggest rubbing them inside the nose or spraying the air with these extremely concentrated oils to counter anthrax infections. I don&#8217;t. Essential oils are likely to cause a variety of side effects (such as damage to the mucus surfaces of the nose and lungs, and stress to the lymphatic system) that could, paradoxically, make infection more likely and more virulent.</p>
<p>Cayenne and golden seal are antibacterial, but too strong to be used as preventatives. Snuffing hot pepper up your nose would kill anthrax, but at the risk of irritating your nose and respiratory passages, damaging their protective mucus surfaces, and stressing your immune system. I rarely use golden seal, not only because it can cause severe side effects, but also because it is approaching extinction in the wild.</p>
<p>I prefer safer <strong>antibacterial herbs</strong> such as Echinacea, usnea, or poke root, which not only kill infection, but also help us keep our immune systems strong. That, of course, is the desired result from immunization: to strengthen the immune system and alert it to the possibility of anthrax infection. Anthrax vaccines currently available for animals are not suitable for humans, and one prepared for people is in short supply (and only 93 percent effective). To achieve full immunity, one must have immunization shots every two weeks for six weeks, then again at 6, 12, and 18 months. Given that, herbs seem a superb alternative: they have an extensive history of countering resistant bacteria and strengthening the body&#8217;s natural defenses.</p>
<p><strong>Echinacea root</strong> is the all American immune system strengthener. It triggers production of white blood cells, interferon, leukocytes, T cells, and B lymphocytes, as well as directly inhibiting the growth of most bacteria and viruses. Peter Holmes, author of <em>Energetics of Western Herbs</em>, cites it as being effective against anthrax. Echinacea tincture is my first choice for countering infection. (Capsules and pills of Echinacea, if used for lengthy periods, may be counter-productive.) A dose of the tincture is one drop for every pound of body weight. I take this several times a week as a preventative, several times daily when there is active infection. If I were exposed to anthrax, I would take a dose every hour for at least ten days.</p>
<p><strong>Usnea</strong>, a common lichen, is especially rich in a powerful antibacterial bitter called usnic acid (also usinic acid). I use the tincture of <em>Usnea barbata</em> (a dose is 1-2 dropperfuls), but other lichens show similar immune-enhancing and tonifying properties. There are no side effects reported from use of even large amounts of usnea tincture.</p>
<p><strong>Poke root tincture</strong> (<em>Phytolacca americana</em>) kicks the immune system into gear incredibly fast. Ive seen chronic infection of many years standing resolve after only one dose, and acute infection subside in a matter of hours. Pokes effect seems to be focused on the lymphatic and glandular tissues of the throat and chest, making it the perfect counter to inhaled anthrax, which attacks the lymph nodes around the lungs. Poke is a specific against pneumonia and a protector of the lungs. It contains an antibacterial alkaloid and a special antiviral protein. It magnifies the effects of Echinacea and they work wonderfully well together.<br />

Poke root is powerful medicine &#8211; in fact a potential poison &#8211; and the dose is very small. One drop of poke tincture may be taken daily for no more than three months as a counter to possible infection. Those with a positive diagnosis could use a single drop as frequently as six times a day.   Alkaloids in poke root tincture can accumulate in the kidneys, making extended use risky, though some people have taken doses of 15 drops a day for a year or more without apparent harm. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Caution</span>: You can feel spacey and out of your body when taking poke, especially at higher doses. The first few times, take it after dinner and stay home so you can judge your reaction.</p>
<p>To be assured of a supply of poke tincture, you may need to make it yourself, as it is rarely found for sale. Poke is a common garden and roadside weed of northeastern North America, tall (5-7 feet) with conspicuous dark purple berries and magenta-hued stalks.</p>
<p>Dig roots after hard frost, when tops are dead and yellowed, and tincture, <em>fresh</em>, for six weeks in 100 proof vodka.</p>
<p><strong>Siberian ginseng </strong>(<em>Eleutherococcus</em>) is widely considered the single most effective immune tonic and adaptogen in the herbal realm. Safe and inexpensive, it helps the immune system respond quickly to infection and mitigates the effects of stress.<strong> Astragalus root </strong>is also an excellent ally for building powerful immunity. Both, or either, may be taken daily for extended periods with no ill effects. I throw several pieces of these roots in every pot of soup I cook. Tincture is less effective as a tonic; and I avoid capsules completely.</p>
<p><strong>Ginseng root</strong> (<em>Panax quinquefolius</em> or <em>Panax ginseng</em>) is another exceptional ally for the immune system, especially when there is physical or emotional stress. In any form (tincture, tea, extract) it nourishes production of interferon, phagocytes, antibodies, and killer T-cells. So long as you need ginseng, theres no overdose; if you take it when you dont need it however, it may produce an unpleasant, jittery, speedy sensation.</p>
<p>But herbs alone are not enough. What we think, and what we consume, are also important parts of building strong immunity.  Candace Pert, visiting professor of neuroscience at Rutgers University, has proven that every cell of the body participates in the immune system through an integrated network of chemical, electrical, and hormonal signals. The immune system is a network, she says, which resonates with the vibrations that surround it. It is as affected by emotions as by bacteria, as impacted by thoughts as by drugs.</p>
<p>Long-standing low-level depression, smoldering anger that is never expressed, bitterness and vengeance projected into the future are all known to depress immune functioning. Prayer, affirmations, positive thinking &#8211; no matter what you call it &#8211; talking lovingly to yourself builds powerful immunity. One of the fiercest old women I know, healer Margo Geiger, taught me to not only think good thoughts but also to unthink immune system stressing phrases like: This is killing me, or Im dying to &#8230; (Lets live for it! shed say.)</p>
<p>Specialized cells which eliminate bacterial and viral infections are made as needed by the immune system. Richly supply your immune system with nutrients, and it easily counters infection, building healthy white blood cells to kill anthrax and other germs. Starve your immune system and it will falter, leaving your lymph nodes and other tissues open to infection and destruction.</p>
<p>My favorite foods for nourishing the immune system include<strong> beets, carrots, garlic, medicinal mushrooms, seaweeds</strong>, and <strong>dark leafy greens</strong> (including nettle infusion). For rapid results, try miso soup with seaweed and wild mushrooms. Try <strong><em>Immune A Go Go Soup</em></strong><em> </em> from my book <em>Breast Cancer? Breast Health!</em></p>
<p><strong>Carotenes</strong> strengthen and activate all parts of the immune system, especially the thymus (the &#8220;master gland of immunity&#8221;). A half-cup of dandelion greens, two cups of nettle infusion, a small baked sweet potato, or two large cooked carrots or beets is a &#8220;dose&#8221;; but ten times that much can be consumed safely. Repeated doses provide a cumulative effect starting about a week after you begin.</p>
<p><strong>Selenium </strong>is a trace mineral with special abilities for building a healthy immune system. Best sources are organic garlic, medicinal mushrooms, and astragalus.</p>
<p><strong>Zinc</strong> helps build energetic white blood cells (which eliminate bacterial infections). Best sources are Echinacea, nettles, and seaweed.</p>
<p>The B vitamin complex, especially <strong>B6</strong> (pyridoxine), is critical to immune system health.  Best sources are potato skins, broccoli, prunes, and lentils.</p>
<p>Virtually all drugs depress the immune system. This includes caffeine and nicotine, alcohol, prescribed drugs,  &#8220;recreational&#8221; drugs, and vitamin/mineral supplements. For a healthy immune system, eat nourishing food and forgo the pills.</p>
<p>Both <strong>light and dark </strong>are necessary for a strong immune system. For optimum immune system strength, sleep in a totally dark room at night, and spend at least 15 minutes a day outside without glasses or contacts. Full spectrum sunlight is needed to trigger the production of   important immune system components.</p>
<p><strong>Exercise</strong> is an excellent way to tonify the immune system. A number of clinical trials have shown regular exercise to be strongly linked to heightened immunity. The emphasis is on regular. It is better to walk one mile four times a week for a month than to jog 16 miles once a month.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">In Summary</span>:</strong> Strengthen your immune system with a good diet, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, emotional well-being, and a few of the recommended herbal allies of your choice. Always remember to use herbs and herbal preparations simply and safely. Avoid immune compromising substances such as coffee, tobacco and medications. With a strengthened immune system you will not only enjoy better health, but you will be less likely to be susceptible to infection and possible death from bacterial and/or viral invasions. Faith in your body&#8217;s ability to protect itself will continue to bolster and reinforce the immune system as your mental well-being improves. Enjoy the upward spiral of health as you follow the path of the Wise Woman Way.</p>
