Caffeine Survey Reveals Most, Least Caffeinated Cities

Norwalk, Conn., Jan. 13, 2009 - The second annual HealthSaver Caffeinated Cities Survey, commissioned by HealthSaver, a national emerging health care discount service, found that the most caffeinated city in the country is Tampa, followed by Seattle, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
The least caffeinated cities are Riverside/San Bernardino, followed closely by Atlanta, San Diego, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Dallas. The survey considered numerous caffeine sources, including coffee, tea, sodas, energy drinks, chocolate, pain relievers and caffeine pills.

Considering caffeinated coffee consumption alone, it was no surprise that Seattle ranked No. 1 nationwide for the second consecutive year.

The HealthSaver 2008 Caffeinated Cities Survey, released today, was conducted to determine the caffeine consumption habits and attitudes of consumers across the U.S., and to learn more about cultural views and health benefits of this morning pick-me-up, afternoon alert booster and late-night indulgence.

“With the advent of rich, high-end coffees, soaring popularity of energy drinks and national fascination with green tea, our HealthSaver Caffeinated Cities Survey has brewed up some very interesting trends, findings and results,” said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. “This groundbreaking research is an important tool to help educate about the health benefits of moderate caffeine consumption in the United States.”

The health benefits of caffeine are plentiful and well-documented in numerous studies in recent years. Coffee and tea, in particular, have emerged as good health food sources that can lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, colon cancer, and cirrhosis of the liver, as well as lift your mood, treat headaches and even lower risk of cavities. Caffeine also enhances athleticism, endurance and performance, according to health care experts.

“Even though at one time coffee was considered harmful to your health, at this point there is no compelling research to indicate that, in fact, is true.” said Dr. Peter R. Martin, Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and the Director of the Institute of Coffee Studies, Vanderbilt School of Medicine. “Newer studies actually prove coffee in moderation is good for one’s health.”

Here’s the buzz on the most and least wired cities:Most Caffeinated Cities2008

1. San Francisco

2. Philadelphia

3. New York

4. Detroit

5. Baltimore

Other cities surveyed in 2008 include Baltimore, Miami, Boston, Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia and St. Louis.

For the second year in a row, Seattle ranked No. 1 in coffee consumption, with 55 percent of residents surveyed saying this elixir of alertness would be the most difficult caffeine product to give up.

Nearly one-half (49 percent) of all respondents nationwide said they drink caffeinated coffee every day, while cola and tea tied with a 20 percent daily consumption rate. Sweets containing chocolate ranked fourth among caffeine products, with a 13 percent daily consumption, the survey found.

Consumers tipped their coffee cups on a variety of caffeine-related trends:

For the second straight year, nearly one-half of all respondents (42 percent) said coffee/specialty drinks would be the hardest to give up.
Men are much more likely than women (47 percent vs. 39 percent) to say coffee would be the hardest to give up, similar to the first annual survey.
Nearly three-fourths (72 percent) of all respondents said they are not addicted to caffeine.
Among age groups, the older the consumer, the more likely they are to say coffee would be the most difficult caffeinated product to give up, a pattern similar to that found last year.

Other key findings of the study:

Women are more likely than men to say they are addicted to caffeine (29 percent of women vs. 24 percent of men).
A majority (64 percent) said they consume about the same amount of caffeine as they did a year ago.
More than one-fourth (28 percent) consume less caffeine now than they did a year ago.
The younger the age group, the more likely they are to say they consume more caffeine than a year ago.
Among respondents consuming less caffeine, 53 percent said it is because they are seeking to improve their health; and nearly one-fourth (24 percent) of those consuming less caffeine are doing so because of a change of diet/currently on a diet plan.

Arthritis Prevention and Treatment

NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 16, 2008 - Arthritis afflicts half of Americans age 65 and older, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Arthritis causes deterioration within the joints that serve as cushion between bones. The cartilage covering the end of the bone breaks down, resulting in difficulty moving the joint. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Arthritis, as a result, disables more Americans than heart disease and stroke, according to government statistics.
"A healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity can help prevent and treat the symptoms of arthritis, including limited movement," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson.

Although age quickens the development of arthritis, nearly two-thirds of people with the disease are actually younger than 65. The continual use of joints, which exercise provides, can therefore keep joints strong and sustain proper movement between bones.

"Arthritis doesn't have to put your life on hold," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. "To keep your arthritis under control, follow these health tips to be proactive with both treatment and prevention."

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, affects the joints in your neck, hands and those that bear weight, including knees and hips.
Time and age cause gradual wear and tear of the tissue between bones, resulting in a grating sensation as the bones begin to meet. Osteoarthritis can also be caused by being overweight and putting too much stress on joints.

When the movement of affected joints causes bones to rub together, everyday actions such as walking can become difficult. Not using these joints, however, will aggravate the arthritis. So keeping the afflicted areas active will help relieve pain.

The U.S. Department of Health reports that, for older adults suffering from osteoarthritis in the knee, physical activity three times a week can nearly cut arthritis-related disability in half. A study by Tufts University showed similar results with strength training, which appeared to be just as effective as medications, perhaps even more.

Rheumatoid arthritis

The immune system is designed to protect the body, but for those with Rheumatoid arthritis, the defense system mistakenly releases enzymes that then attack healthy tissue. Women are three times more likely to have Rheumatoid arthritis, which most often strikes adults older than 60.

In reaction to the immune system's damage, the joints swell and weaken the muscles, tendons and ligaments that surround it. This causes pain, stiffness and restricted movement, as well as fever and fatigue.

Rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect the same spot in both sides of the body, most often the fingers and wrist joints. In severe cases, the nervous system and internal organs can also be affected.

People with Rheumatoid arthritis should take advantage of the disease's remission periods, which serve as opportune times to exercise. When Rheumatoid arthritis is active, rest will help reduce the joints' inflammation.

Gout

Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis. It develops when a byproduct of the diet, uric acid, is deposited into the joint. Build-up within the space between bones leads to sudden, intense pain.
Men are more likely to have Gout, which attacks most often at night when joints are inactive. Hypertension, kidney disease and excessive alcohol intake also increase the risk of Gout, which frequently affects lower parts of the body, including toes, ankles and knees.

Keep Moving

Exercise is key to controlling arthritis symptoms, because movement strengthens the muscles that protect your joints. Low-impact exercises, such as walking and golf, are optimum. To avoid abrupt movements, aquatic exercises can provide a more gentle resistance for your muscles.
Include strength training in your exercise regimen to further relieve joint stiffness. As muscle strength improves, the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability suggests increasing repetitions rather than weight.
Stretching should be a part of any exercise routine, especially for arthritis sufferers who seek flexibility and a wider range of motion. Slow, smooth stretches will sustain the elasticity of bones' connecting tissue.

Regular Doctor Visits

If a joint suddenly swells and you start to run a fever, see your doctor immediately. You should also see your healthcare provider if you experience joint tenderness, warmth and stiffness for more than two weeks.
Treatment of arthritis can be more effective with an early diagnosis, so regular doctor visits are especially important. A 2008 U.S. Department of Health study shows that, if caught early, arthritis pain may be avoided. The National Institutes of Health also reports that if treated early, joint damage may be prevented.
Your physician can monitor your progress to provide appropriate treatment, which may include blood tests, x-rays and an examination of joint fluid.
Doctors will most often prescribe aspirin for arthritis, though ibuprofen also serves to reduce inflammation. Surgery to rebuild or replace the joint is usually only performed if lifestyle changes and treatment render unsuccessful.
Two-thirds of Americans diagnosed with arthritis are overweight, according to government statistics. Excess weight increases the risk of arthritis because it adds stress to joints. Among women, a weight loss of 11 pounds reduced the risk of osteoarthritis in the knee by 50 percent.

Arthritis, as a disabling disease, not only affects your health, but also your way of life. Living with arthritis therefore means keeping your joints active and your general health in shape. To monitor your progress and adjust treatment as needed, visit your doctor on a regular basis. This will help you control your arthritis and continue your way of life with minimal limitations.

To Relieve Headaches, Be Proactive

NORWALK, Conn., Aug. 20 - The National Institutes of Health estimates that 45 million Americans suffer chronic headaches. For at least half of these headaches sufferers, the pain they experience is severe enough to be disabling. If headaches cause disruptions in your life, there are many options to find relief.
Headaches result when muscles and blood vessels outside of your skull put pressure on your nerves, sending a "pain message" to your brain.

"Every-day habits that prevent headaches include a healthy, regular sleep schedule, stress management and consistent exercise," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson.

To get back on track to a happy, healthy life, be proactive.

"Headaches don't have to keep you from the activities you enjoy," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. Free your life of headache pain with these tips.

A Good Night's Sleep

Changes to your sleep schedule can cause cluster headaches, which occur without warning and are characterized by a sudden, sharp pain that can reach maximum intensity within minutes of onset.

Your nervous system requires sleep to function properly. A regular schedule of seven to nine hours of sleep every night will keep your body's sleep-wake cycle in order.

To measure the quality of your sleep, gauge your energy level throughout the day. Are you waking up refreshed? If not, headaches may result and your sleeping habits may be to blame.

According to the Better Sleep Council, 65 percent of Americans lose sleep because of stress, which itself is a trigger for headaches as well.

Tension

Muscles within the neck, shoulder and scalp tighten and contract as a response to stress. This anxiety-induced reaction often leads to tension headaches.

Tension headaches, the most common type, cause a mild to moderate pain some people characterize as a tight band wrapped around the head.

High levels of stress and the resulting headaches can eventually take their toll on your general health. As a professional ice skater, I used breathing exercises to calm my nerves and eliminate stress before competitions. Try this: take slow, deep breaths to help clear your mind, slow your heart rate and rid your body of tension.

Usually a simple nap or an over-the-counter medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, can relieve the pain associated with tension headaches. Be careful not to consume too much pain medication, because overuse can lead to rebound headaches.

To cope with stress, change how you approach situations that negatively affect your mood. We often can't change such situations, so relief may lie in how you react to the problem itself.

Migraines

Problems with stress and sleep can also cause a more debilitating type of headache, migraines, which can last between a few hours and a few days.

The intense pain of migraines is often accompanied by sensitivity to light, nausea or vomiting, changes in body temperature and confusion. If you begin to experience a migraine, seek a dark, quiet room to rest. A cool compress on the forehead and the back of the neck may also help alleviate pain.

Migraine sufferers, who often have a family history of migraines, should visit their physician to further explore prevention and treatment options.

When to See Your Doctor

Don't hesitate to go to the emergency room for headaches that start after a head or neck injury, or cause difficulties with speech. This may be a sign of a more serious condition.

If headaches occur at least three times a month, or you experience an abrupt, severe headache, pay your doctor a visit. To help your physician diagnose and treat your headaches, keep a journal that notes how long each headache lasts, the severity and description of the pain, the location of the headache and any triggers or effects you notice.

In addition to lifestyle changes, your doctor may prescribe medicine and, in order to diagnose, arrange for a blood test and an X-ray, MRI or CT scan.

Another Reason to Get Fit

To reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches, maintain a regular exercise routine to help relax muscles.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 30 minutes of physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. If you keep a busy schedule, try breaking the 30 minutes into three 10-minute intervals throughout the day: a quick run in the morning, a short walk during your lunch break and 10 more minutes of activity in the late afternoon. Remember that you're more likely to stick to an exercise regimen that focuses on an activity you enjoy.

Additional Causes

While caffeine can help relieve headaches, too much of the stimulant can cause headaches. If your caffeine intake exceeds 500 mg per day, or approximately four cups of coffee, gradually decrease your consumption.

Allergies also cause headaches. When air cannot enter the sinuses because of swollen tissue, it causes pressure inside the head. To relieve the pain, use a decongestant to unblock nasal passages and eliminate any bacterial infection that may be present.

Time with your family, your focus at work and your general day-to-day activities are too important to be disrupted by headaches. Adjust your lifestyle to prevent headaches before they strike: sleep well, get plenty of exercise and keep stress at a minimum. If that doesn't work, your physician can help you take steps to relieve your pain.

Go Organic for Quality, Natural Food

Norwalk, Conn., July 1, 2008 - The organic food that reaches your grocery's shelves retains the genuine flavor nature intended and often contains more nutrients than its counterpart.
With the popularity of organic food on the rise, consumers now find organic produce, meat and dairy products more accessible than ever. "The difference between conventional food and organic food can be traced back to the farm' said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson. Organic farmers ensure natural, quality food by growing produce without pesticides and chemicals, and raising livestock without unnecessary genetic or hormonal practices. "Certified organic farms are also earth-friendly," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. Whether buying organic food for its nutritional value, flavor, healthy growing methods or earth-conscious origins, you will notice a difference with a healthier, safer diet.

More NutrientsOrganic fruits, vegetables and grains are more nutritious than conventional plant-based foods. They are up to 25 percent more nutrient-dense, according to a review of nearly 100 nutrition studies.

When you eat organic food rather than its conventional counterpart, your body may receive more of the essential nutrients it requires, including antioxidants, iron and vitamin C.

More Americans Now Eating Organic

According to the Organic Trade Association, 27 percent of Americans eat more organic foods than they did one year ago. Organic food sales have nearly tripled in recent years, with organic products as the fastest-growing sector of American agriculture.

Consumers who buy organic are also more likely than conventional shoppers to engage in healthy and environmentally friendly behaviors, according to the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.

From Farm to GroceryOrganic foods’ growing popularity also means consumers can now find such products at major supermarkets and their neighborhood grocery, not just natural food stores. In fact, two-thirds of organic milk is sold at conventional supermarkets.

Produce travels approximately 1,600 miles before it reaches the consumer, according to the National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service. Look for products grown by local organic farmers, who can instead provide you with fruits and vegetables at their peak freshness, which often means they still contain essential nutrients.

Eighty percent of energy used in the U.S. food system is attributed to transportation, storing and other preparatory methods not as necessary for local farmers. Small, non-polluting farms are also less reliant on oil because the farms use fewer machines and less pesticides and fertilizer.

When you buy organic you can be confident that more care has been given to the product, because organic farming processes tend to be more labor-intensive in order to ensure quality food.

Organic Foods May Be SaferIn recent years, there has been in an increase in consumers’ concern about the safety and quality of the foods they consume. The popularity of organic produce, which has significantly lower levels of pesticide residue, has also increased.

A study supported by the Environmental Protection Agency, concluded that an organic diet provides significant effects in the protection against pesticide exposure.

Organic Certification

Organic foods come from farms that minimize exposure to toxic chemicals. The integrity of the food is therefore preserved, so that the strawberry or tomato you eat is just that – no additives or artificial ingredients included.

Certified organic meat, eggs and dairy products are produced without the use of genetic engineering, growth hormones or antibiotics. The livestock must also be allowed outdoors and be fed organic food.

Organic agriculture methods also minimize pollution, and conserve soil and water.

When you buy groceries with the U.S.D.A. organic seal, you buy food that has been grown, produced and processed with natural methods. And good farming means good nutrition. You may even try growing your own organic garden. Do you find mid-recipe that you forgot to buy tomatoes? Just step outside and grab one from the vine. Food you grow yourself can also taste the better for your efforts!

Norwalk, Conn., June 17, 2008 - More than half of people 50 and older are at risk for osteoporosis, the most common bone disease, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. It is essential to make bone health a priority because bone loss occurs without symptoms.
Osteoporosis, or the `silent disease' as it is often called, is of particular concern to women, who are more susceptible to it," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson.

Bones protect the heart, lungs, brain and muscles, and store calcium, an essential nutrient. Without strong bones, the risk of osteoporosis and broken bones increases.

Luckily it is never too late to prevent or treat osteoporosis," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver.

Be sure you get enough calcium in your diet and stay physically active. These are two of the most important things you can do to keep both your body and bones at optimal health.

Calcium is EssentialIf you do not consume enough calcium, your body will take the calcium from your bones and use it to maintain healthy nerves, muscles and blood levels. This loss of calcium causes your bone structure to deteriorate and become fragile.

Since bone is living tissue that constantly renews itself, maintaining strong bones is of utmost importance, especially in our early years. After age 30, bone breakdown exceeds bone formation, causing us to reach our peak bone mass. It is therefore necessary, by age 30, to have accumulated enough calcium in our bones to maintain calcium requirements for both our skeletal structure and our body.

A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that 78 percent of women and 55 percent of men over the age of 20 do not meet the recommended calcium intake. Adults aged 19 to 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium per day, and adults older than 50 need 1,200 mg.

Meet your daily calcium requirement with an English muffin and one cup of low-fat fruit yogurt for breakfast; a baked potato with skim mozzarella cheese, a cup of broccoli and a cup of baked beans for lunch; and an orange and a handful of almonds as an afternoon snack. An 8-oz. glass of milk is also a quick way to drink nearly one-third of your day's calcium requirements.

You can also enrich your meals with calcium. For pancakes, use milk instead of water. Add non-fat powdered milk to casseroles and soups. Or sprinkle low-fat cheese on salads. And don't forget about food labels. Aim for foods with at least 10 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of calcium per serving.

Risk Factors

Factors that increase a person's risk of developing osteoporosis include age, sex, family history, body size, inadequate calcium intake, lack of physical activity and certain lifestyle choices.

As you grow older, your body develops bone less quickly. Weak bones, however, are not a natural part of aging.

People with a family history of fractures tend to have reduced bone mass, according to the U.S. Department of Health. If broken bones are frequent in your family, take extra steps to ensure optimum bone health.

Excessive alcohol consumption hinders the body's ability to absorb calcium, resulting in reduced bone mass. Smoking also reduces the body's ability to use calcium efficiently.

People who weigh less than 127 pounds may have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis.

Ladies, Take Special Care

Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, due, in part, to menopause. Menopause reduces the production of the female hormone estrogen, which helps keep bones strong and intact. For several years after menopause, women lose bone up to four times faster than they did before. Women also have less bone tissue and lower bone mass than men.

Women's risk for hip fractures, the most destructive type of bone fracture, is equal to their risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

Use It or Lose It

When you are physically active, your body receives a signal alerting your bones to become stronger. New cells are then added to strengthen bone. Therefore, if you do not exercise, your bones do not receive the message that they need to be strong.

The U.S. Department of Health recommends 30 minutes of physical activity each day for adults, and 60 minutes for children.

Weight-bearing exercises are best for preventing bone loss because bones become denser when called upon to work against gravity. Examples of weight-bearing activities include hiking, tennis and - if you prefer the gym - stair-climbing machines.

Vitamin D and Supplements

Calcium isn't the only element needed for healthy bones. Vitamin D is also necessary. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium by helping it enter the bloodstream.

The main source of vitamin D is sunlight. Just 15 minutes per day is all you need. Your diet can also provide vitamin D.

If you're not consuming enough vitamin D or calcium, you may want to consider a dietary supplement. The most popular calcium supplements are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Look for"USP" on the label to ensure the supplement meets standards established by the U.S. Pharmacopeia.

To get the most out of your calcium supplement, take in doses no larger than 500 mg. Also be careful not to take with iron supplements, as they may interfere with each other.

Talk to Your Doctor

People who fracture a bone after the age of 50, and women older than 65, should be routinely screened for osteoporosis.

Three out of four women age 45 - 75 have never spoken to their physician about osteoporosis, according to the Foundation for Osteoporosis Research & Education. Be proactive with your health. Discuss with your doctor your risk for bone disease, the need for a bone density test, your calcium and vitamin D intake and your medications.

Your doctor may recommend a bone mineral density test to determine your bone health. This test is quick and painless, and can help determine the rate of bone loss, detect low bone density and confirm a diagnosis.

Though osteoporosis does not have a cure, certain medications can stop or slow bone loss, and even help build new bone.

Osteoporosis prevention and treatment isn't just about broken bones. It's about sustaining a strong skeletal structure, preventing disability in your older years and keeping your body at optimum health.
The Impact of Diet and Supplements on Health

Norwalk, Conn., May 29, 2008 - Complementary and alternative medicine is a diverse group of health care practices not presently considered to be a part of traditional medicine. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, nearly half of Americans use complementary and alternative medicine, which includes dietary supplements.
The use of dietary supplements has grown considerably in the past two decades," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson.

While supplements can help you ingest the vitamins and minerals your body requires, they should not be used as a substitute for the nutrients and benefits a balanced diet provides. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that supplements should also not be used in place of prescription medicine.

"Dietary supplements can, however, help sustain proper body function when your body does not otherwise receive the nutrients it requires," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver.

Educate Yourself

Dietary supplements do not have the same testing and labeling process as prescription and over-the-counter medications, so it is up to you, the consumer, to evaluate a supplement for safety and effectiveness.

First, find out what risks the supplement carries. Internet research should only include credible resources, such as government agencies and major medical centers. Clinical studies, which involve testing with human beings, will best reflect how you may react to the supplement. In order to ensure recent findings, articles should be up to date.

Read the label. Do the supplement's active ingredients target your health needs? The Mayo Clinic recommends looking for "USP" on the label to ensure the supplement meets standards established by the U.S. Pharmacopeia. The label should also include an expiration date.

More than 75 percent of Americans 50 years and older do not discuss complementary and alternative medicine with their physicians, according to a National Institutes of Health survey. Yet it is important to consult your physician before taking dietary supplements because, much like prescription medicines, supplements can cause adverse effects, including interactions with other medicines. For example, people taking high blood pressure medication may lower their blood pressure too much if also taking fish oil supplements.

Vitamins

Vitamins convert food into energy and maintain proper digestion and nerve function.

Many biological processes require vitamins, though opinions on the health benefits of multivitamin supplements remain divided. One essential nutrient with few side effects is Vitamin C, an antioxidant which helps your body absorb iron.

Scientific studies show that Vitamin C only helps prevent colds for people living in extreme conditions. Overall, eating whole foods that contain Vitamin C, such as oranges, is a wiser choice than a Vitamin C supplement because dietary sources provide a variety of nutrients. The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board recommends 90 mg of Vitamin C per day for men and 75 mg per day for women. One cup of strawberries provides a full daily Vitamin C intake.

Minerals

Minerals help regulate the balance of fluids in your body and are essential to your health. Studies show that many Americans consume less than half of the recommended amount of calcium, a mineral important to bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis.

Women should take special care to meet calcium needs because, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease. If your diet does not provide enough calcium, a dietary supplement can help you get back on track.

Food sources of calcium include milk, cheese and yogurt. Aim for food that includes at least a 10 percent daily value (DV) of calcium. This information can be found on the food label.

If your diet contains too many low-nutrient foods, such as sugar-sweetened sodas and potato chips, consider taking an iron supplement. People prone to iron deficiency include pregnant women and teenage girls.

Low iron intake can limit oxygen delivery to cells, resulting in fatigue and decreased immune function. A balanced diet that includes foods such as meats, poultry, fish and beans, should provide enough iron. If iron levels are not otherwise met, an iron supplement may help restore your health.

Popular Dietary Supplements

Among the most popular natural products in complementary and alternative medicine is echinacea, an herbal supplement used to boost the immune system. Studies indicate, however, that echinacea does not help prevent or treat colds and the flu, as is commonly believed.

St. John's wort is also one of the most commonly used herbal supplements. According to a study by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, this plant extract has minimal health benefits in treating major depression. St. John's wort may, however, help treat milder forms of depression.

Omega-3 supplements can help promote overall health. Evidence most strongly supports fish-oil supplements as a treatment for improvements in the effects of cardiovascular disease.

Functional Foods

Fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help delay age-related diseases. Because your body's defense against oxidative stress can be weakened with age, it is important to consume plenty of antioxidants.

Common functional foods include tomatoes for prostate health, apples to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals and whole-grain cereals to reduce the risk of diabetes.

Evidence suggests that the antioxidants in blueberries and grapes may reduce the risk of cancer and help manage cardiovascular health. The distinct colors of such fruits can help you identify foods that contain antioxidants.

Approximately 90 percent of tea consumed in the United States is black tea, which, with the proper diet, can help reduce cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary heart disease. Drinking plenty of green tea may also help prevent and treat inflammation-related diseases.

The best formula for optimum health is to maintain a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine. While conventional medicine is still best to diagnose and treat diseases, dietary supplements may help restore your health when you cannot receive adequate nutrition or your body requires more nutrients than usual. Before taking dietary supplements, be sure to talk to your physician and educate yourself on the pros and cons of the supplement. If the supplement is safe for you to use, it just may be the answer you're looking for in restoring your health.

Fit for Summer

Norwalk, Conn., May 20 - The warm weather provides the perfect opportunity to get fit for summer. Boost your health and confidence with a plan that combines smarter eating habits with a steady fitness routine.

The key to controlling weight is to eat fewer calories while increasing physical activity," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson.

If exercise has not been a part of your daily routine, don't worry. People who start exercising later in life appear to gain the same health benefits as people who have stayed fit their entire lives. Find what type of exercise works for you, and stick with it.

Healthier eating could reduce cancer deaths in the United States by as much as 35 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Health. Keep yourself healthy - and in swimsuit shape! - with a smart diet plan.

Think of food as fuel. Replace unhealthy foods with nutrient-rich options. "Aim for a variety of food while keeping an eye on portion sizes," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver.

Make this summer your season to shine. Dedicate yourself to a better You!
Get Moving

The benefits of regular exercise are not limited to toned muscles and less body fat. Consistent exercise also helps protect against heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, strokes and even depression.

The U.S. Department of Health recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. Choose cardiovascular activities that suit you. If you're competitive, join a tennis league. Social? Ask a friend to accompany you on your morning jogs.

To increase your metabolic rate by up to 15 percent, incorporate resistance training into your fitness routine. Tone biceps with dumbbells and upper legs with lunges. Such exercises will help strengthen muscles and increase endurance. Once you've mastered the moves, increase weight or difficulty. A challenge will yield results!

Focus on quality. A 15-minute workout done properly may be more beneficial than a 30-minute workout performed in a hurry. For example, don't rush through sit-ups. Instead, keep focus as you contract your stomach muscles while you ease down to the floor.

Eat Right

You don't have to deprive yourself in order to sustain a healthy, flavorful diet. Choose food from a variety of food groups to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to fuel your day and keep you healthy.

Many Americans consume too many calories with too few nutrients. Make vegetables a key part of your diet. Most vegetables are naturally low in calories and fat. In general, the more colorful a vegetable or fruit, the more nutrients it provides.

Fruits are another nutrient-packed power food that provides essential vitamins and minerals. One banana, one orange and a handful of dried apricots provide the daily recommended amount of fruit. Fruit may also help you feel full.

Don't let unhealthy snacks sneak their way into an otherwise healthy diet. Instead of potato chips, add fiber to your diet with protein-packed nuts. Or snack on baby carrots instead of quick-stop eats such as French fries.

According to the American Dietetic Association, people tend to underestimate how much they eat. To get a better idea of proper portions, take a week to literally measure your foods' recommended serving sizes. Also, make a point to be more aware of when you become full.

Stay on Track

When struggling through the last lap in the pool or the biggest hill on a bike ride, continue to remind yourself why you want to be fit in the first place. Motivation is often a key element to a consistent exercise routine.

If you can't seem to find time for workouts within your busy schedule, recruit an exercise partner. A "teammate" can provide a commitment not only to yourself, but also to a friend. This just may be the accountability you need to keep your fitness in check.

If your goal is to look better in your swimsuit for this summer's beach vacation, hang your swimsuit in a place you can't avoid, such as on the inside of your closet door. This will serve as a continuous reminder of your ultimate fitness goal.

A goal to "get in shape" can be too broad of a commitment. Instead, establish specific goals, such as to play tennis 45 minutes per day or to eat dessert only once a week.

You'll be hard-pressed to find success with only better eating habits or only improved physical activity. In order to get fit for summer, your diet and workout routine must work together. Make a pledge to yourself that you will make health a priority. Success will yield results for years to come.

HealthSaver, an emerging health care discount program, offers savings on prescriptions, vision care, complementary and alternative health care treatments, vitamins and supplements by mail and more than 1,500 fitness clubs nationwide, including select Bally Total Fitness, World Gym and Ladies Workout Express locations.

Allergies and Asthma Relief

Figure Skater Peggy Fleming Teams With Health Saver:

Norwalk, Conn., April 15, 2008 - Allergies and asthma affect six times more Americans than cancer, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. As the fifth leading chronic disease, allergies, along with asthma, strike one out of every four Americans.

There are many pro-active measures you can take to prevent or treat allergies and asthma," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson, "especially during spring, the main allergy season."

Pollen, mold, dust and other allergens cause allergies in some people and not others because the immune system of allergy sufferers identifies these substances as harmful. The immune system's defense results in symptoms such as congestion, sneezing and watery eyes.

"To take control of your allergies, prevent exposure to irritants in your home and be sure to follow the advice of your physician," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. An active approach is the best approach in the fight against allergies.

Hay Fever

Seasonal allergies' most common symptom is also one of the most common illnesses in America: allergic rhinitis. Hay fever, as it is otherwise known, causes the nose and airways to become irritated upon exposure to allergens. This results in a runny nose and bouts of sneezing, much like a common cold.

Unlike the common cold, however, rhinitis does not cause a fever and will last for a longer period of time, usually weeks or months. If left untreated, rhinitis may also lead to more serious conditions, such as insomnia and fatigue.

The first step in controlling allergic rhinitis is avoiding irritants. To reduce moisture and mold irritants, use an air conditioner and dehumidifier to dry the air in your home. Dust mites can also cause allergic symptoms. Dust mites are attracted to animal dander, which they feed upon. Animal dander is best avoided by keeping pets, such as dogs, outdoors.

In severe allergy cases, your physician may recommend immunotherapy. Studies show that this series of allergy shots can be successful for up to 90 percent of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Asthma and Allergies

Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, and accounts for one-quarter of all emergency room visits in the United States. Yet asthma is also the third leading cause of preventable hospitalization.

Asthma, a chronic disease, is not to be ignored, because it can cause permanent damage to the airways. Treatment involves continuous management, including controlling adverse environmental factors and taking medication as prescribed.

Most moderate to severe asthma sufferers also battle allergic rhinitis. Controlling that complication may improve the asthma associated with it.

Take Action

You can help avoid and decrease exposure to allergens by taking control of the environment you live in, most especially your home. To improve air quality, replace the window unit filters often and keep windows and doors closed to prevent the entry of outdoor allergens.

Keep your home clean. It is best to vacuum at least once a week, ideally by someone who does not suffer from allergies. Reorganize areas so that they are not prone to the collection of dust and mold. Also minimize the number of indoor plants, because the moisture in the soil may lead to the growth of mold.

Bedroom mattresses tend to hold the most dust mites in the home. In order to wash off such allergens that may have collected on your skin, bathe each night before bedtime. Also, each week, wash your pillows, sheets and blankets in water at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. You can best protect yourself from dust mites by encasing your pillows and mattresses in zippered dust-proof covers.

Bathrooms are especially susceptible to moisture collection. Reduce dampness with an exhaust fan and leave the room uncarpeted. Any leaky faucets or pipes should be repaired as soon as possible. Frequently check for mold and mildew in bathtubs, showers and sinks. To eliminate mold, clean with a mixture of water and chlorine bleach.

Conditions just outside of the home can also encourage the collection of allergens. Stay safe by eliminating piles of leaves and firewood. These can serve as a welcome home for mold spores. This, along with the mowing of the lawn and raking of the leaves, should be handled by someone who does not suffer from allergies.

To reduce asthma symptoms, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology suggests freeing your home of allergy-inducing cockroaches. To do so, adjust your kitchen so that it does not encourage the entry of these insects. Keep lids on garbage containers and put pet food dishes away if left in the open. To prevent the spread of crumbs, aim to eat your meals in one particular area. An exterminator may also help ensure that your home is insect-free.

Sinuses

Mucus prevents bacteria, pollen and dust from entering your lungs, playing an important role in protecting you against allergens. The sinus cavities are no longer able to clear out such substances when allergies cause inflammation in the nasal sinuses.

Nearly 37 million Americans suffer from chronic sinusitis. To treat blocked nasal passages and the "sinus headache" that occurs when swollen tissue traps air and produces pressure, take measures to drain your sinuses. Decongestant nasal sprays are often used, though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises not to use these products for more than three days because overuse can actually make symptoms worse. If a bacterial infection is present, your physician may prescribe an antibiotic.

When to See Your Physician

If actions and precautions don't help your asthma and allergy symptoms, visit your physician. A doctor can run tests to determine the cause and severity of your condition.

Your physician may recommend a treatment plan that involves medications such as antihistamines. Antihistamines relieve allergy symptoms by neutralizing the effects of the chemical released by your immune system during an allergic reaction.

If you are diagnosed with allergies or asthma, your physician may refer you to a specialist. This allergist or immunologist may then suggest immunotherapy. This treatment, much like a vaccine, will help your body become less sensitive to allergens.

Don't let allergies and asthma control your life. Be consistent in the efforts to avoid allergens. Since allergies are a chronic disease, treatment should also be consistent. Such a pro-active approach is sure to bring relief.

Figure Skater Peggy Fleming Teams With HealthSaver:

Norwalk, Conn., March 4, 2008 - Sleep is as essential to our well-being as food and water, yet more than 25 percent of Americans do not get enough sleep, according to the U.S. Department of Health.

Sleep keeps many essential body functions in order," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson. "Without proper sleep, the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and depression may increase."

Sleep allows your body and mind to receive the rest each requires. "One study found that sufficient sleep may even help fight cancer," said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver. Read on to learn more about how you can get the most out of your night's sleep.

Sleep Smart

A lack of sleep can lead to serious health problems, not just daytime drowsiness. The American Heart Association reports that adults who sleep five hours or less each night nearly double their risk of high blood pressure.

Insufficient sleep also disrupts mood. A study by the National Institute of Mental Health found that sleep deprivation causes the emotional centers of the brain to be 60 percent more reactive. Without enough sleep, you may also become irritable, in part because sleep deficit puts the body in a state of high alert.

Naps can be a great way to rejuvenate. But don't nap for more than 30 minutes, or you may disrupt your sleep-wake cycle.

Why We Sleep

Studies show that insufficient sleep decreases the body's ability to manage blood sugar, increasing the risk of diabetes. Adults who sleep less than seven hours each night are also more likely to be obese, because of changes in appetite and the storage of carbohydrates.

Without sleep, bodies lose the opportunity to conduct many vital functions that maintain health. For example, during sleep our bodies produce hormones that help fight infection and repair cells and tissue.

The nervous system and immune system will not function properly without sleep. Neurons also use this time to shut down and adjust back to working order.

Even our memory is affected by sleep. The part of the brain that maintains memory is in fact very active during non-waking hours.

Sleep-wake Cycle

In order to keep your sleep-wake cycle in order, it is best to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. If you lose sleep during the weekends, you develop a "sleep debt" that eventually will need to be repaid.

To alert your body that it's time to go to bed, follow a consistent nighttime routine. Prepare your body for sleep with such relaxing activities as reading or listening to soothing music.

Not everyone requires seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Some people require only five, others 10. To find out how much sleep your body needs, assess how you feel after different amounts of sleep. Pay attention to your energy level, productivity and general well-being.

Make Changes

Lifestyle factors play a major role in sleep quality. Among them is regular exercise, which helps provide deeper sleep. Exercise will also help you fall asleep quicker, leaving you rested and ready for your day.

Mental health and sleep have a great effect on one another. An estimated 65 percent of Americans lose sleep because of stress. Depression, in turn, can also lead to insomnia.

A proper sleeping environment is a quiet, dark room free of interruption. Abnormally high or low temperatures will reduce your ability to regulate body temperature, which can lead to an increase in awakenings.

What to Avoid Before Bedtime

Leave your cup of coffee for the morning, not the late afternoon. Caffeine should be avoided at least eight hours before you go to bed, because it makes it more difficult for people to both fall and stay asleep.

Nicotine is also a stimulant. It is not only a bad habit, but also leads to difficulty falling asleep and waking up.

Though often viewed as a sedative, alcohol actually makes it more difficult for people to enter the deep sleep that their body requires.

When to See a Doctor

If you encounter sleep problems three nights a week for more than a month, and have already eliminated stimulants and regulated sleeping patterns, see a physician for treatment.

Waking multiple times throughout the night may be a sign of a sleep disorder. Common disorders include sleep apnea, which interrupts breathing, and narcolepsy, which causes fatigue regardless of how much you sleep.

Because of side effects such as memory impairment, over-the-counter sleep medications should be taken with caution. Examine your daily sleep routine before taking such antihistamines.

We spend approximately one-third our lives in bed. Optimize your health by treating sleep as a priority. A proper night's sleep is often the best kind of medicine. Rest well and your body will thank you for it!

Figure Skater Peggy Fleming Teams With HealthSaver:

Norwalk, Conn., Jan. 24, 2008 - With a renewed commitment to your health and well-being, you can begin the new year with a sense of rejuvenation.

Plan a "self make-over" for better health, improved fitness, less stress and more time for yourself to reach your goal and achieve significant success in 2008.

"To lose weight, incorporate physical activity into your daily routine and establish a smart diet," said Peggy Fleming, Olympic figure skating champion and HealthSaver spokesperson. "A balance between calories consumed and calories burned will leave you looking and feeling your best."

Learn to help prevent and cope with life's stresses. "Start the new year on the right foot, and don't let stress be a roadblock for your fitness goals, said Brad Eggleston, vice president of HealthSaver.

  Get a Grip on Stress

Nearly half of all Americans say stress has a negative impact on their lives, according to the American Psychological Association. Vow today to conquer stressful situations with a renewed ability to cope.

Change the way you deal with situations that trigger stress. For example, if your five o'clock errands leave you feeling overwhelmed, avoid the late afternoon bustle by tackling errands during your lunch break.

There's no use in being bothered by problems you can't change. Instead, spend your energy on changes you can make.

Accept that adjustments often mean a change in standards. If your money woes mean no annual beach vacation, embrace vacation as a time to spend with your family rather than a time to get away.

Two-thirds of physician visits are due to stress-related symptoms. Take hold of your health by adopting effective stress prevention practices. Listen to music, read an article or take a quick walk - physically active people tend to have less anxiety.

An optimistic mindset will help you better handle stress. When you carve out time to do something for yourself, you'll have a better attitude about meeting your daily responsibilities. Time for yourself is necessary, even if the things you do during this time are seen as "less pressing" than other duties.

Be Efficient

If "there are not enough hours in the day" is a phrase you're all too familiar with, learn to be more efficient with your time. A To Do list is an easy way to simplify your life. Equipped with a plan, you'll feel more in control.

Put your To Do list in order of priority. Tackle the more demanding tasks when your energy is at its peak. If you keep delaying the dreaded garage clean-up, force yourself to organize the garage for 10 minutes. You may find that once you've started, you're on a roll.

Divide time-consuming projects into smaller tasks. Reading "Fix attic leak" on your To Do list can be a bit intimidating. Instead, write "(1) Call plumber, (2) allocate money within budget" and so on.

Delegate responsibilities. You don't have to do it all on your own.

Learn to say no. Before you agree to take on additional responsibilities, consider what you will or will not gain from the extra task. If you want to spend more time with your family in 2008, politely decline invitations that keep you from reaching that goal.

Get Back on Track

It's never too late to jump back into the active lifestyle that may have gotten away from you last year. Keep muscles strong now and you're more likely to live longer and stay sharp in your later years.

Stay active and you not only reduce your risk of heart disease, but also increase your ability to fight depression.

According to the U.S. Department of Health, 60 percent of Americans do not participate in the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity five or more days a week, putting them at greater risk for cancer, diabetes and stroke. Squeeze in your 30 minutes of exercise in three 10-minute intervals throughout the day.

Fresh Fare

Three out of five Americans are overweight, and face an increased risk for high blood pressure. Vow to adopt a well-balanced diet with maximum nutrients for your calorie intake.

Healthier eating could reduce cancer deaths in the United States by 35 percent. Fill your plate with more vegetables than meats and carbohydrates. Then, each week, make a small change, such as switching from soda to water or trading cookies for fruit as an afternoon snack.

Portion sizes can be deceptive. Aim for food portions no larger than your fist.

Quit eating on the go. Your brain needs 20 minutes to register that your stomach is full. To avoid binge eating, eat before you get too hungry.

At the grocery, pay attention to nutrition labels. Stay clear of any foods that contain more than 20 percent of your daily fat intake. Also use a grocery list - and stick to it - to avoid the impulse buys that may add empty calories to your diet.

You probably learned at an early age, but may have lost sight of diet rule No. 1: Eat your fruits and vegetables. The more fruits and vegetables you eat per day, the less likely you are to develop cardiovascular disease.

The best way to establish a habit is repetition. So don't give up if you first fail to meet your expectations. Most people do not successfully meet a resolution on the first try. Write down your goals (be specific) and what you hope to achieve from them. If you find yourself leaning toward old habits, read these to remind yourself why you wanted to change in the first place. Keep trying and you'll have a healthier 2008!
