Albert Einstein was born at Ulm, in Württemberg, Germany, on March 14, 1879. Six weeks later the family moved to Munich, where he later on began his schooling at the Luitpold Gymnasium. Later, they moved to Italy and Albert continued his education at Aarau, Switzerland and in 1896 he entered the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich to be trained as a teacher in physics and mathematics. In 1901, the year he gained his diploma, he acquired Swiss citizenship and, as he was unable to find a teaching post, he accepted a position as technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. In 1905 he obtained his doctor's degree.

During his stay at the Patent Office, and in his spare time, he produced much of his remarkable work and in 1908 he was appointed Privatdozent in Berne. In 1909 he became Professor Extraordinary at Zurich, in 1911 Professor of Theoretical Physics at Prague, returning to Zurich in the following year to fill a similar post. In 1914 he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and Professor in the University of Berlin. He became a German citizen in 1914 and remained in Berlin until 1933 when he renounced his citizenship for political reasons and emigrated to America to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton*. He became a United States citizen in 1940 and retired from his post in 1945.

After World War II, Einstein was a leading figure in the World Government Movement, he was offered the Presidency of the State of Israel, which he declined, and he collaborated with Dr. Chaim Weizmann in establishing the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Einstein always appeared to have a clear view of the problems of physics and the determination to solve them. He had a strategy of his own and was able to visualize the main stages on the way to his goal. He regarded his major achievements as mere stepping-stones for the next advance.

At the start of his scientific work, Einstein realized the inadequacies of Newtonian mechanics and his special theory of relativity stemmed from an attempt to reconcile the laws of mechanics with the laws of the electromagnetic field. He dealt with classical problems of statistical mechanics and problems in which they were merged with quantum theory: this led to an explanation of the Brownian movement of molecules. He investigated the thermal properties of light with a low radiation density and his observations laid the foundation of the photon theory of light.

In his early days in Berlin, Einstein postulated that the correct interpretation of the special theory of relativity must also furnish a theory of gravitation and in 1916 he published his paper on the general theory of relativity. During this time he also contributed to the problems of the theory of radiation and statistical mechanics.

In the 1920's, Einstein embarked on the construction of unified field theories, although he continued to work on the probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory, and he persevered with this work in America. He contributed to statistical mechanics by his development of the quantum theory of a monatomic gas and he has also accomplished valuable work in connection with atomic transition probabilities and relativistic cosmology.

After his retirement he continued to work towards the unification of the basic concepts of physics, taking the opposite approach, geometrisation, to the majority of physicists.

Einstein's researches are, of course, well chronicled and his more important works include Special Theory of Relativity (1905), Relativity (English translations, 1920 and 1950), General Theory of Relativity (1916), Investigations on Theory of Brownian Movement (1926), and The Evolution of Physics (1938). Among his non-scientific works, About Zionism (1930), Why War? (1933), My Philosophy (1934), and Out of My Later Years (1950) are perhaps the most important.

Albert Einstein received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine and philosophy from many European and American universities. During the 1920's he lectured in Europe, America and the Far East and he was awarded Fellowships or Memberships of all the leading scientific academies throughout the world. He gained numerous awards in recognition of his work, including the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1925, and the Franklin Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1935.

Einstein's gifts inevitably resulted in his dwelling much in intellectual solitude and, for relaxation, music played an important part in his life. He married Mileva Maric in 1903 and they had a daughter and two sons; their marriage was dissolved in 1919 and in the same year he married his cousin, Elsa Löwenthal, who died in 1936. He died on April 18, 1955 at Princeton, New Jersey.

Albert Einstein's brain has often been a subject of research and speculation.
Einstein's brain was removed within seven seconds of his death. The brain has attracted attention because of Einstein's reputation for being one of the foremost geniuses of the 20th century, and apparent regularities or irregularities in the brain have been used to support various ideas about correlations in neuroanatomy with general or mathematical
intelligence. Scientific studies have suggested that regions involved in speech and language are smaller, while regions involved with numerical and spatial processing are larger. Other studies have suggested an increased number of Glial cells in Einstein's brain.

Einstein's brain was removed, weighed and preserved by Thomas Stoltz Harvey, the pathologist who performed the autopsy on Einstein. He claimed he hoped that cytoarchitectonics would reveal useful information. Harvey injected 10% formalin through the internal carotid arteries and afterwards suspended the intact brain in 10% formalin. Harvey photographed the brain from many angles. He then dissected it into roughly 240 blocks (each about 10cm3) and encased the segments in a plastic-like material called celloidin. Harvey may also have removed Einstein's eyes, and given them to Henry Abrams. He was apparently fired from his position at Princeton Hospital shortly thereafter for refusing to relinquish the organs.In 1999, further analysis by a team at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario,Canada revealed that his parietal operculum region in the inferior frontal gyrus in the frontal lobe of the brain was vacant. Also absent was part of a bordering region called the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure). Researchers at McMaster University speculated that the vacancy may have enabled neurons in this part of his brain to communicate better. "This unusual brain anatomy…(missing part of the Sylvian fissure)… may explain why Einstein thought the way he did," said Professor Sandra Witelson who led the research published in The Lancet. It should be noted that this study was based on photographs of Einstein's brain made in 1955 by Dr. Harvey, and not direct examination of the brain, as implied by the caption of one of the photographs, inaccurately identifying it as a photograph from 1995. Einstein himself claimed that he thought through images rather than verbally. Professor Laurie Hall of Cambridge University commenting on the study, said, "To say there is a definite link is one bridge too far, at the moment. So far the case isn't proven. But magnetic resonance and other new technologies are allowing us to start to probe those very questions". Scientists are currently interested in the possibility that physical differences in brain structure could determine different abilities. One famous part of the operculum is Broca's area which plays an important role in speech production (Einstein was speculated to have Asperger's Syndrome). To compensate, the inferior parietal lobe was 15 percent wider than normal. The inferior parietal region is responsible for mathematical thought, visuospatial cognition, and imagery of movement.

As far as we known today, Albert Einstein has never done any IQ test. Thus his IQ is unknown!

In the 20ies scientists had tried to estimate the IQ of deceased personalities such as Mozart (1756-1791) and Goethe (1749-1832) by means of biographic data; thus they wanted to estimate Albert Einstein’s IQ, too. The value estimated for Einstein was between 160 and 180. But this rough estimation can not count as Einstein’s IQ!

Children also wanted to know Einstein’s IQ. Thus a ten-year-old girl wrote a letter to Einstein at the end of the 40ies which said:

"…I’m writing to you because my cousin and I had a bet. He said you had 175 in intelligence. And I said you had 190. Which one of us is right. … My inteligence is 145."

When a person is Right Brain Dominant, they are thought of as the dreamers, the artists, and teh musicians of the world. What is the meaning of life ?

The above question...constituting just six words and a question mark,if seen physically.But if we analyze it in its true depth, we will realize that it is not just a simple question but a question if answered,will give the answers to most of the problems frustrating us today.
I am in search for the most suitable answers available and in the due course i came across the works of J.Krishnamurthy,a well known writer and speaker on philosophical and spiritual subjects.
After watching some of his videos and reading some of his books it seems he has answered a lot of elusive questions disturbing humanity today including the above question.

Adaptation. is a 2002 comedy-drama satire film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. The film is based on Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief through self-referential events. Adaptation. stars Nicolas Cage (as both Charlie and Donald Kaufman), as well as Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Cara Seymour, Brian Cox, Tilda Swinton, Ron Livingston and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film tells the story of Charlie Kaufman's difficult struggle to adapt The Orchid Thief into a film. In addition Orlean romances with John Laroche while Charlie enlists the help of his obnoxious twin brother Donald.

The film had been in development as far back as 1994. Jonathan Demme brought the project to Columbia Pictures with Kaufman writing the script. Kaufman went through writer's block and did not know what to think of The Orchid Thief. In turn Kaufman wrote a script about his experience adapting The Orchid Thief into a screenplay. Tom Hanks was at one point set for the role of Charlie Kaufman while John Turturro was approached to portray Laroche. Jonze signed to direct and filming finished in June 2001. Adaptation. received positive reviews and critical acclaim, as well as outstanding success at the 75th Academy Awards, 60th Golden Globe Awards and 56th British Academy Film Awards.

Plot

John Laroche and his wife run a successful Florida nursery, but tragedy strikes and Laroche's wife, mother and uncle are involved in a car accident. Laroche's mother and uncle die, but his wife goes into a coma, divorcing Laroche once she gains consciousness. Hurricane Andrew comes one month later, destroying Laroche's home and everything he owns. Meanwhile, local Seminoles hire Laroche due to his vast knowledge of flowers and orchid poaching. However, the Seminoles only use the extract of the Ghost Orchid for drug use, and not for tribal ceremonials as Laroche thought.

Laroche is caught at the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, ensuing into a trial and catching the interest of New Yorker journalist Susan Orlean. Laroche and Susan become great friends, with Susan writing The Orchid Thief. Laroche and Susan then become romantically involved, while Susan is still married, albeit unhappily, in New York. The Orchid Thief is then optioned by Columbia Pictures.

During the filming of Being John Malkovich, Charlie Kaufman is hired to write the screenplay. At the same time Charlie is going through melancholic depression and his obnoxious twin brother Donald moves into his house. Donald decides to become a screenwriter like Charlie, and visits the seminars of Robert McKee. Charlie wants to adapt the script into a faithful adaptation of The Orchid Thief, hoping to impress Susan. However, he realizes that there is no narrative involved and finds it impossible to turn the book into a film, going through a serious case of writer's block.

Meanwhile, Donald's spec script for a cliché psychological thriller sells for over one million dollars, while Charlie accidentally starts writing his script with self-reference. Already well over his deadline with Columbia Pictures, Charlie (from Los Angeles, California) visits Susan in New York for advice on the screenplay. In New York Charlie finds that he is not courageous enough to meet Susan, leaving without consulting with her. Charlie visits a McKee seminar in New York, gaining advice from McKee, and bringing Donald to assist with the story structure. Donald suggests having sex, a car chase and drugs for the climax. Charlie and Donald follow Susan to Florida where she meets Laroche. The film indeed ends with Susan and Laroche taking the Ghost Orchid drug, having sex, a car chase involving Susan and Charlie and with Donald being shot and killed, and Laroche getting eaten alive by an alligator. His writer's block broken, Charlie finally summons up the courage to tell his former girlfriend, Amelia, that he is in love with her. He finishes his script, with Gérard Depardieu in mind to portray him in the film.

- Charlie Kaufman: A screenwriter going through melancholic depression and writer's block who is hired to write a script for The Orchid Thief. He is afraid to kiss his girlfriend Amelia. Charlie has failed romances with Susan, Valerie and Alice the Waitress.
- Donald Kaufman: Charlie's obnoxious brother. Donald has failed at various get-rich-quick-schemes in the past and decides to become a screenwriter like Charlie. Donald visits the seminars of Robert McKee and writes a cliché psychological thriller spec script titled The Thr3e. Marty sells the script to a studio and Donald is set to be a millionaire before he's killed in the climax.
Meryl Streep as Susan Orlean: A journalist and author from The New Yorker. She is fascinated by Laroche's trial in Florida and intends to write a piece about it. She becomes romantically involved with Laroche.
Chris Cooper as John Laroche: An eccentric orchid poacher working for the local Seminole Indian tribe. Laroche considers himself "the smartest man I know" and has a unique knowledge of Charles Darwin, fossils and flowers. He lost his front teeth after a car accident wherein his mother and uncle were killed. His ex-wife divorced him after waking up from a coma. Laroche also ran a successful porn website before being killed by an alligator.
Cara Seymour as Amelia Kavan: A violinist and Charlie's girlfriend. She leaves him for a man named David after her unsuccessful relationship with Charlie. In the end, Charlie finally summons the courage to tell her that he loves her. She admits that she loves him, too.
Brian Cox as Robert McKee: A creative writing instructor who is widely known for his popular "Story Seminar". McKee is heavily against voice-overs and considers Casablanca (1942) to be the finest screenplay ever written.
Tilda Swinton as Valerie Thomas: A studio executive from Columbia Pictures whom Charlie is attracted to. Valerie is the one who hires Charlie to write the script.
Ron Livingston as Marty Bowen: Charlie's obnoxious agent who personally suggest Charlie to get help from Donald when writing The Orchid Thief.
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Caroline Cunningham: A make-up artist and Donald's girlfriend.
Judy Greer as Alice: A waitress at the local café where Charlie often dines. Charlie tries to ask her out on a date.

Tom Hanks was originally set for the double role of Charlie and Donald Kaufman, while Variety was convinced Donald was a real person.^[1] Cage took the role for a $5 million salary,^[2] and wore a fatsuit during filming.^[3] Streep previously expressed dire interest in the role before being cast,^[2] and took a salary cut in recognition of the film's budget.^[4] John Turturro was approached to portray John Laroche.^[5] Cooper heavily considered turning down Laroche, but accepted it after his wife's persistence.^[6] Albert Finney, Christopher Plummer, Terence Stamp and Michael Caine were considered for the role of Robert McKee, but McKee personally suggested Brian Cox towards the filmmakers.^[7]

Litefoot and Jay Tavare have small roles as Seminole Indians. Catherine Keener, John Malkovich, Lance Acord and Spike Jonze have uncredited cameos as themselves in scenes where Charlie Kaufman is on the set of Being John Malkovich. John Cusack filmed a cameo before it was deleted from the final cut of the film.^[8] More cameos include Doug Jones as Augustus Raymond Margary for a small scene when Susan fantasizes about the history of orchid poaching, Jim Beaver as Ranger Tony and David O. Russell as a New Yorker journalist.

A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American biographical film about John Forbes Nash, the Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Paul Bettany.

The story begins in the early years of Nash's life at Princeton University as he develops his "original idea" that will revolutionize the world of mathematics. Early in the movie, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on his wife and friends.

The film opened in US cinemas on December 21, 2001. It was well-received by critics, grossed over $300 million worldwide, and went on to win four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for Best Leading Actor, Best Editing, Best Makeup, and Best Score. The film has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of some aspects of Nash's life. The film fictionally portrayed his hallucinations as visual and auditory, yet factually they were exclusively auditory. Too, Nasar concluded Nash's refusal to take drugs "may have been fortunate," since their side effects "would have made his gentle re-entry into the world of mathematics a near impossibility"; in the screenplay, however, just before he receives the Nobel Prize, Nash speaks of taking "newer medications."

Cast

Russell Crowe as John Forbes Nash. A mathematical genius who is obsessed with finding an original idea to ensure his legacy. There was difficulty when casting Crowe, who was well-liked by the producers, when he went to film Gladiator in a different time-zone and was difficult to reach for an extended period of time to attach him to the project.^[3]
Jennifer Connelly as Alicia Nash. A later student of Nash who catches his interest. Connelly was cast after Ron Howard drew comparisons to her and Alicia Nash, both academically and in facial features.^[3]

What is Nash Equilibrium ?

In game theory, the Nash equilibrium (named after John Forbes Nash, who proposed it) is a solution concept of a game involving two or more players, in which each player is assumed to know the equilibrium strategies of the other players, and no player has anything to gain by changing only his or her own strategy (i.e., by changing unilaterally). If each player has chosen a strategy and no player can benefit by changing his or her strategy while the other players keep theirs unchanged, then the current set of strategy choices and the corresponding payoffs constitute a Nash equilibrium. In other words, to be a Nash equilibrium, each player must answer negatively to the question: "Knowing the strategies of the other players, and treating the strategies of the other players as set in stone, can I benefit by changing my strategy?"

Stated simply, Amy and Bill are in Nash equilibrium if Amy is making the best decision she can, taking into account Bill's decision, and Bill is making the best decision he can, taking into account Amy's decision. Likewise, many players are in Nash equilibrium if each one is making the best decision that they can, taking into account the decisions of the others. However, Nash equilibrium does not necessarily mean the best cumulative payoff for all the players involved; in many cases all the players might improve their payoffs if they could somehow agree on strategies different from the Nash equilibrium (e.g. competing businessmen forming a cartel in order to increase their profits).

The Man from Earth is a 2007 film written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Richard Schenkman. The film stars David Lee Smith as John Oldman. The screenplay for this movie was conceived by Jerome Bixby in the early 1960s and was completed on his death bed in April of 1998, making it his final piece of work. ^[1]

After history Professor John Oldman unexpectedly resigns from the University, his startled colleagues impulsively invite themselves to his home, pressing him for an explanation. But they're shocked to hear his reason for premature retirement: John claims he must move on because he is immortal, and cannot stay in one place for more than ten years without his secret being discovered. Tempers rise and emotions flow as John's fellow professors attempt to poke holes in his story, but it soon becomes clear that his tale is as impossible to disprove as it is to verify. What starts out as a friendly gathering soon builds to an unexpected and shattering climax.

Schindler's List is a 1993 biographical film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Steven Zaillian. It is a dramatized account of the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than one thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories.

The film, based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ralph Fiennes as Schutzstaffel (SS) officer Amon Göth, and Ben Kingsley as Schindler's accountant Itzhak Stern. The film was both a box office success and recipient of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Score. In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked the film #9 on its list of the 100 best American films of all time.

Symbols

The girl in the red coat

Schindler sees a little girl wearing a red coat. The red coat is one of the few instances of color in the black-and-white scenes of the film.

Though the film is primarily shot in black-and-white, red is used to distinguish a little girl in a coat. Later in the film, she is seen dead. This character is based on Roma Ligocka, who was well known in the Warsaw Ghetto for her red coat. Ligocka in fact survived the Holocaust and, after the film was released, published a novel in 2000 entitled The Girl in the Red Coat: A Memoir.^[12]

According to Andy Patrizio of IGN, the girl in the red coat is used to indicate that Schindler has changed: "Spielberg put a twist on her [Ligocka's] story, turning her into one more pile on the cart of corpses to be incinerated. The look on Schindler's face is unmistakable. Minutes earlier, he saw the ash and soot of burning corpses piling up on his car as just an annoyance."^[13] Andre Caron wondered whether it was done "to symbolize innocence, hope or the red blood of the Jewish people being sacrificed in the horror of the Holocaust?"^[14] Spielberg himself has explained that he only followed the novel, and his interpretation was that

"America and Russia and England all knew about the Holocaust when it was happening, and yet we did nothing about it. We didn’t assign any of our forces to stopping the march toward death, the inexorable march toward death. It was a large bloodstain, primary red color on everyone’s radar, but no one did anything about it. And that’s why I wanted to bring the color red in."^[15]

Smoke

The beginning features a family observing the Shabbat. Spielberg said, "to start the film with the candles being lit... would be a rich bookend, to start the film with a normal Shabbes service before the juggernaut against the Jews begins." When the color fades out in the film's opening moments, smoke symbolizes the horror of bodies being burnt at Auschwitz. Only at the end do the images of candle fire regain their warmth when Schindler holds a Shabbat service for his workers.For Spielberg, they represent "just a glint of color, and a glimmer of hope."^[2]

The Holocaust

The Holocaust (from the Greek ὁλόκαυστον (holókauston): holos, "completely" and kaustos, "burnt"), also known as (Ha-)Shoah (Hebrew: השואה), Churben (Yiddish: חורבן), is the term generally used to describe the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, as part of a programme of deliberate extermination planned and executed by the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (Nazi) regime in Germany led by Adolf Hitler.

The dominance of ideology and the scale of the genocide

In other genocides, pragmatic considerations such as control of territory and resources were central to the genocide policy. Yehuda Bauer argues that:

[T]he basic motivation [of the Holocaust] was purely ideological, rooted in an illusionary world of Nazi imagination, where an international Jewish conspiracy to control the world was opposed to a parallel Aryan quest. No genocide to date had been based so completely on myths, on hallucinations, on abstract, nonpragmatic ideology – which was then executed by very rational, pragmatic means."^[20]

The slaughter was systematically conducted in virtually all areas of Nazi-occupied territory in what are now 35 separate European countries.^[21] It was at its worst in Central and Eastern Europe, which had more than seven million Jews in 1939. About five million Jews were killed there, including three million in occupied Poland and over one million in the Soviet Union. Hundreds of thousands also died in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Greece. The Wannsee Protocol makes clear that the Nazis also intended to carry out their "final solution of the Jewish question" in England and Ireland.^[22]

Anyone with three or four Jewish grandparents was to be exterminated without exception. In other genocides, people were able to escape death by converting to another religion or in some other way assimilating. This option was not available to the Jews of occupied Europe.^[23] All persons of recent Jewish ancestry were to be exterminated in lands controlled by Germany.

Emotional Intelligence(EI) includes 4 types of abilities:

Perceiving emotions — the ability to detect and decipher emotions in faces, pictures, voices, and cultural artifacts- including the ability to identify one’s own emotions. Perceiving emotions represents a basic aspect of emotional intelligence, as it makes all other processing of emotional information possible.
Using emotions — the ability to harness emotions to facilitate various cognitive activities, such as thinking and problem solving. The emotionally intelligent person can capitalize fully upon his or her changing moods in order to best fit the task at hand.
Understanding emotions — the ability to comprehend emotion language and to appreciate complicated relationships among emotions. For example, understanding emotions encompasses the ability to be sensitive to slight variations between emotions, and the ability to recognize and describe how emotions evolve over time.
Managing emotions — the ability to regulate emotions in both ourselves and in others. Therefore, the emotionally intelligent person can harness emotions, even negative ones, and manage them to achieve intended goals.

The Emotional Competencies (Goleman) model

The EI model introduced by Daniel Goleman ^[12] focuses on EI as a wide array of competencies and skills that drive leadership performance. Goleman's model outlines four main EI constructs:^[12]

Improved emotional skills increase “on task” behaviors (Rosenfield, 1991).

Increased social and emotional skills reduce discipline problems (Doyle, 1986).

Emotions give a more activated and chemically stimulated brain, which helps us recall things better (Cahill et al, 1994).

Emotions are crucial to sensory development because they facilitate the storage and recall of information (Rosenfield, 1988).

Stress and threat cause the brain to downshift; this reduces the opportunity for neuron growth and causes learning to be inhibited (Ornstein and Sobel, 1987).

Low levels of empathy are associated with poor school achievement (Nowicki and Duke,1992, cited in Frey 1999).

Children who respond to setbacks with hope and resiliency vs. anger and hopelessness achieve higher academic and social success (Dweck, 1996).

Students who believe their teachers support and care about them are more engaged with their work (Skinner and Belmont, 1993); they value their work more, and have higher academic goals (Goodnow, 1993, cited in Frey 1999).

Children who are able to delay gratification are more popular, earn better grades, and had an average of 210 more points on their SAT tests (Shoda, Mischel, and Peake, 1990).

Scores on a test of hope are more accurate than the SAT at predicting college grades (Snyder,1991); the same is true of a test on optimism (Schulman, 1995).

Teachers can help students lessen their frustrations, prevent behavioral problems, and accelerate learning by providing students with information and skills to make appropriate choices (Dewhurst, 1991; Meyer, 1990).

Seligman tested 500 members of the freshmen class at the University of Pennsylvania. He found that their scores on a test of optimism were a better predictor of actual grades during the freshmen year than SAT scores or high school grades (Schulman, 1995).

Developmental psychology, also known as human development, is the scientific study of progressive psychological changes that occur in human beings as they age. Level 1. Preconventional Morality

Stage 1 - Obedience and Punishment

The earliest stage of moral development is especially common in young children, but adults are capable of expressing this type of reasoning. At this stage, children see rules as fixed and absolute. Obeying the rules is important because it is a means to avoid punishment.

Stage 2 - Individualism and Exchange

At this stage of moral development, children account for individual points of view and judge actions based on how they serve individual needs. In the Heinz dilemma, children argued that the best course of action was whichever best-served Heinz’s needs. Reciprocity is possible, but only if it serves one's own interests.

Level 2. Conventional Morality

Stage 3 - Interpersonal Relationships

Often referred to as the "good boy-good girl" orientation, this stage of moral development is focused on living up to social expectations and roles. There is an emphasis on conformity, being "nice," and consideration of how choices influence relationships.

Stage 4 - Maintaining Social Order

At this stage of moral development, people begin to consider society as a whole when making judgments. The focus is on maintaining law and order by following the rules, doing one’s duty, and respect ing authority.

Level 3. Postconventional Morality

Stage 5 - Social Contract and Individual Rights

At this stage, people begin to account for the differing values, opinions, and beliefs of other people. Rules of law are important for maintaining a society, but members of the society should agree upon these standards.

Kolhberg’s final level of moral reasoning is based upon universal ethical principles and abstract reasoning. At this stage, people follow these internalized principles of justice, even if they conflict with laws and rules.

Speaking after the sentencing of Britain's youngest terrorist, Shahid Malik, the minister for International Development, said parents had to be vigilant against the threat of radicalisation.

He also called on mosques to do more to combat fundamentalism.

The MP spoke out after the sentencing of Hammad Munshi who was just 15 when hewas recruited by a terror cell believed to have been plotting against the Royal Family.

The teenager, from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, had downloaded information about bomb-making material from the internet and hidden notes about martyrdom under his bed.

The judge at the Old Bailey said the schoolboy's head had been filled with "pernicious and warped ideas" which led to his involvement in a plan to kill kuffars or non-believers.

Munshi's local MP Mr Malik said: "It is a real wake-up call for parents because there is a real need to be vigilant, especially when their kids are on the internet.

"It is a real wake-up call to how older jihadists can prey on vulnerable young people.

"Mosques have done a lot but they need to do more in terms of telling young people what is acceptable and what is not in Islam."

Munshi, who is the grandson of a senior Islamic sharia judge, was groomed by terrorist Aabid Hussain Khan, 23, who was jailed last month alongside postman Sultan Muhammed, 23, both from Bradford.

He was arrested on his way home from a GCSE chemistry exam in 2006 and found with two small bags of ball-bearings - a key component of a suicide vest.

Anti-terrorist officers also discovered notes about how to make napalm, detonators and grenades on his computer, which he had forwarded on to Khan.

Now 18, he was found guilty last month of compiling information likely to be useful in terrorism.

Sentencing him to two years in a young offenders' institution, Judge Timothy Pontius said Khan and others had taken advantage of Munshi's youth.

"It is regrettable and tragic that you find yourself in court on such a serious charge," he said. "You have brought very great shame upon yourself, your family and your religion.

"In the light of the evidence, I have no doubt that you, amongst others of similar immaturity and vulnerability, fell under the spell of fanatical extremists."They took advantage of your youthful naivety in order to indoctrinate you with pernicious and warped ideas masquerading as altruistic religious zeal.

"Were it not for Aabid Khan's malign influence I doubt whether this offence would ever have been committed. Yet there is no doubt that you knew what you were doing."Harendra de Silva QC, defending, said the schoolboy had been subjected to "grooming and manipulation" by others who were "more criminally inclined".

He said Munshi's relatives were "devastated" by what had happened "not least because of the shame that it has brought upon this very upstanding family".His grandfather is Yakub Munshi, president of the Islamic Research Institute of Great Britain at the Markazi Mosque in Dewsbury.Mr Munshi said afterwards: "All of us feel there are lessons to be learnt, not only for us but also for the whole Muslim community in this country.

"This case demonstrates how a young impressionable teenager can be groomed so easily through the internet to associate with those whose views run contrary to true Muslim beliefs and values."The trial heard how Munshi, a pupil at Westborough High School in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, had a library of videos, documents and audio clips showing acts of Jihad, Mujihadeen fighting and Al-Qaeda preachings.

He conversed regularly online with Khan, described as the "Mr Fix-it" of the terrorist world, and they had discussions about how to smuggle a sword past airport security.Khan had links to several other cells, including jailed terrorist, Mohammed Atif Siddique and alongside Muhammed, he assembled a dossier on 15 members of the Royal Family.Khan was jailed for 12 years and Muhammed jailed for 10 years last month.

Hindu Fundamentalists

The "Sangh Parivar"

The Sangh Parivar, or "family of organisations", is an umbrella term used to describe the range of social, educational and political organisations and groups that have been formed by the Indian Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since the 1950s. However, the ideas that the Sangh promotes have existed, in one form or another, for over 150 years. They generally have a series of common ideological or political objectives, with different emphases at different times. These can be broadly summarised as follows:

India has been in the past, and should be in the future, a Hindu-only country. Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are accepted as being within the Hindu "community" (whether they like it or not!).

Hinduism is a unified religion and civilisation (without conflicts of sect, caste, region, "theology", even when such conflicts clearly exist) which goes back thousands of years. Hindus need to be re-educated and be proud of their historical destiny.

Hindus constitute a "race" - the Vedic-Aryans.

Hindus have been traditionally tolerant, which has been interpreted as "weakness". Tjos has resulted in India being conquered by others over the centuries, including Muslims and the British. Hindus now need to become strong ideologically, in their faith, politically and in health (through exercise and mental preparation) in preparation for the struggle to form a Hindu nation (Hindu Rastra) based on Hindutva - blood belonging, religious identity and territorial nationhood.

People of other religions in India have either been forced to convert (and in essence therefore remain Hindus) or are "foreigners" in India and should be expelled or forced to live within a Hindu society and according to Hindu defined laws. The Muslims of India have been the special focus of attention, but others, such as Christians, have also been stigmatised as the non-Indian "other" and targeted for attacks or forcible reconversion back to Hinduism.

Hindus are discriminated against in their "own" country and have been divided by others (the "secularists", communists, Congress Party) on the basis of caste, class, regional identities or politics. Such "secularists" should also be targets and are labelled "neo-secularists" by the Sangh (who claim they are the true secularists!).

The only legitimate languages of India should be those derived from Sanskrit, the ancient language of north Indian, high-caste Brahmins, as written in Hindu holy texts

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh And VHP:Shakha

"Shakhas" means "branch" in Sanskrit.
Most of the organisational work of the RSS is done through the coordination of shakhas or branches. These shakhas are run every morning (prabhat shakha), evening (sayam shakha) or night (ratri shakha) for 1 hour in public places and are open to people of all castes, creeds or social and economic status .
RSS was founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, a Nagpur doctor, with the aim to unite Hindus.^[6] Hedgewar proposed that Hindus must unite to face challenges and protect the freedom and diversity of Indian civilization.
The RSS was banned in India thrice during periods in which the government of the time considered them a threat to the state: in 1948 after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, during the Emergency (1975-77) , and after the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition.
Following Mahatma Gandhi's assassination in 1948 by former member of the RSS Nathuram Godse,^[9] some RSS members were jailed. Godse's connection with the RSS was investigated^[10]; the RSS was suspected of involvement in or incitement towards Gandhi's assassination and was banned on February 4, 1948.

The Bharatiya Janata Party

The BJP is now the leading party of government in India. However, its more extreme Hindutva agenda is often constrained by its coalition partners. Most leading BJP leaders are also RSS members. The electoral victories of the BJP in recent years have led to increasing "Hinduisation" of Indian society at all levels (e.g. the history curriculum in schools), increasing tensions between India and Pakistan and increasing internal communal conflicts. However, there is some evidence that support for the BJP may be waning following recent regional elections. Gujarat is the "jewel in the crown" for the BJP and the state it most needs to win in future elections. It is also the Indian State where the theories of Hindutva are being pursued most vigorously. This may go some way to explain why recent communal tension is centred in Gujarat.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad

The VHP (or World Council of Hindus) claims to represent the entire Hindu world, propounds a Hindutva world view, asserts Hindu collective power and aims to unite all Hindus in opposition to Islam. When originally formed, it intended to bring all Hindu sects within the orbit of its overarching umbrella. In India it has formed a number of related organisations including Bajrang Dal (its militant wing) and Hindu Jagran Manch, both of which have been involved in spectacular forms of violence against religious minorities.

Given the centrality of death transcendence beliefs in most religions, the authors hypothesized that religious beliefs play a protective role in managing terror of death. Grey’s Anatomy is an Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning American primetime television medical drama. It debuted on ABC as a midseason replacement for Boston Legal on March 27, 2005, immediately following Desperate Housewives.

The series revolves around Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who began the show as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital in Seattle.

The title of the show is a reference to the famous medical handbook Gray's Anatomy.

On February 11, 2008, ABC picked up Grey’s Anatomy for the 2008-09 television season.^[1] However, there is a possibility that the production of Season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy will be affected by the upcoming Screen Actors Guild strike.^[2]

Creator And Executive Producer

Shonda Rhimes is a screenwriter, director and producer. She is best known as the creator and executive producer of television series Grey's Anatomy and its spin-off Private Practice. In May 2007, she was named as one of the Time 100 people who help shape the world.

Rhimes initially struggled to find a writing or production gig after graduation. For a time, she lived with her sister in San Francisco and worked in advertising. Later, she worked as an office administrator, and then as a counselor at a job center that taught mentally ill and homeless people job skills.

Eventually, Rhimes began to break into the market, and sold several scripts.

Today in this era of science and globalisation , the degree of holistic knowledge of self and the world we are having , it makes no sense in following ancient dogmas of religion,caste,creed, color and other unsubstantiated practices which have no scientific basis .In wake of the situation prevailing today and in the times to come, knowledge will be the single most important factor binding people irrespective of there background .We should realize the triviality of the religion and the dogmas attached to it before it is too late,thereby releasing ourselves from the shackles of mental confinement and mediocrity.

A Human being is a product of billions of years of evolution .During this course he has developed the power to think and the power to create ,human brain being the seat of these distinguished powers. This power of thinking and creation actually defines our species and the knowledge has become the driving force of our lives.So it is upon us to consoildate this driving force to take ourseleves to greater heights of consciousness of both intrapersonal and extrapersonal nature.

Skepticism is a provisional approach to claims. It is the application of reason to any and all ideas — no sacred cows allowed. In other words, skepticism is a method, not a position. Ideally, skeptics do not go into an investigation closed to the possibility that a phenomenon might be real or that a claim might be true. When we say we are “skeptical,” we mean that we must see compelling evidence before we believe.
Modern skepticism is embodied in the scientific method, which involves gathering data to formulate and test naturalistic explanations for natural phenomena. A claim becomes factual when it is confirmed to such an extent it would be reasonable to offer temporary agreement. But all facts in science are provisional and subject to challenge, and therefore skepticism is a method leading to provisional conclusions.

Some claims, such as water dowsing, ESP, and creationism, have been tested (and failed the tests) often enough that we can provisionally conclude that they are not valid. Other claims, such as hypnosis, the origins of language, and black holes, have been tested but results are inconclusive so we must continue formulating and testing hypotheses and theories until we can reach a provisional conclusion.

In my view Skepticism is a perfect Doctrine for a successful nation. Imagine a nation where there are no dividing lines created by religion , caste, creed and other hypothetical division which have been created by man himself to keep the humanity divided and which are limiting him in a cloud of feigned reality and deceptive perceptions .

Dogmatism on the other hand is a established belief or doctrine held by a religion, ideology or any kind of organization, thought to be authoritative and not to be disputed, doubted or diverged from. While in the context of religion the term is largely descriptive. The term Dogmatism is also used to describe a person of rigid beliefs who is not open to rational argument.
But having rigid believes and the non dynamic nature of ones personality is the biggest hindrance in the development of the self and the evolution of the society.
So it is upon us to decide what is our hold...?

Randy Pausch (October 23, 1960 – July 25, 2008) was a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States and a best-selling author, who achieved worldwide fame for his "The Last Lecture" speech on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon University.

In August 2006, Pausch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He pursued a very aggressive cancer treatment that included Whipple procedure^[1] surgery and experimental chemotherapy; however, in August 2007, he was told the cancer had metastasized to his liver and spleen, which meant it was terminal. He then started palliative chemotherapy, intended to extend his life as long as possible. At that time, doctors estimated he would remain healthy for another three to six months. On May 2, 2008, a PET scan showed that his cancer had spread to his lungs, some lymph nodes in his chest and that he had some metastases in his peritoneum and retroperitoneum.

On June 26, 2008, Pausch indicated that he was considering stopping further chemotherapy because of the potential adverse side effects. He was, however, considering some immuno-therapy-based approaches.^[2]

On July 24, 2008, on behalf of Pausch, his friend (anonymous) posted a message on Pausch's webpage stating that a biopsy had indicated that the cancer had progressed further than what was expected from recent PET scans and that Pausch had "taken a step down" and was "much sicker than he had been." THe friend also stated that Pausch was "now enrolled" in a hospice program, which is designed to provide palliative care to those at the end of life.^[3]

On July 25, 2008, Diane Sawyer announced on Good Morning America that Pausch had died earlier that morning. ^[4] Pausch died at his home in Chesapeake, Virginia surrounded by his wife Jai and their three children: Dylan 6, Logan 4, and Chloe 2.

History

Hand Rehabilitation / Plastic Surgery Institute

Stanley Medical College and Hospitals is one of the oldest centers in India in the field of medical education. The seed for this institution was sown as early as 1740 when the East India Company first created the medical department. The Stanley Hospital now stands on the old site of the Monegar choultry established in 1782. In 1809 the Assistant John Native Infirmary was established with Monegar Choultry and leper asylum.

In 1830, a well known philanthropist Raja Sir Ramasamy Mudaliar endowed a hospital and dispensary in the Native Infirmary. In 1836, Madras University established M.B. & G.M. and L.M & S Medical Courses in the Native Infirmary. In 1903, a hospital assistant course was introduced with the help of the East India Company. In 1911, the first graduating class was awarded their Licensed Medical Practitioner (LMP) diplomas.

In 1933, Five Year D.M. & S (Diploma in Medicine & Surgery) course was inaugurated by Sir George Fredrick Stanley. The school was named for him by the Governor of Madras Presidency on July 2, 1928. In 1941, three medical and surgical units were created. This was expanded to seven medical and surgical units in 1964. In 1932, 100 students studied, and then from 1963, 150 students were admitted each year. In 1964, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the President of India, laid the foundation stone for College Auditorium to mark Silver Jubilee Celebration.

Description

The College is associated with the Government Stanley Hospital which has 1580 beds for in-patient treatment. The hospital has an out-patient attendance of around 5000 patients per day. A unique feature is its 8-story surgical complex equipped to perform up to 40 surgeries simultaneously, and a separate pediatrics block with all specialities under one roof.

The three well known departments of the Stanley Medical Hospitals are Surgical Gastroenterology, Urology and the Institute of Hand Rehabilitation and Plastic Surgery. The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and the Department of Plastic Surgery (IRRH & DPS) is one of the best centers in Southeast Asia. The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology was the first in India to perform a successful liver transplant, under the leadership of Dr. R.P. Shanmugam, Surgical Gastroenterologist and the first among Hospitals/ Hospital Departments in India to obtain the ISO 9001 certification. The Department of Urology performs up to fifty kidney transplants a year.
