These concerns are not ill founded as ovarian cysts can cause many upheavals in the life of a woman because of the resulting complications. In order to avoid these complications and to seek appropriate treatment, an understanding of the risks and complications associated with ovarian cysts is essential.

Understanding ovarian cysts:

Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacks, which are formed within the ovary. Cysts, which are bigger than two centimeters, are formally diagnosed as ovarian cysts. Many ovarian cysts are functional in nature. That is, they are beginning and rarely ever cause complications. However in some cases, the cysts may develop certain complications. Risks and complications of ovarian cysts depend on the type of cyst and the stage of treatment. Some types of risks complications, which are associated with ovarian cysts, include the following.

1. Ruptured ovarian cyst: This is one the most serious form of complication. Ruptured ovarian cyst can lead to internal bleeding and in some cases it can be very dangerous. Ruptured ovarian cyst can cause hemorrhage, which requires immediate medical attention.

2. Ovarian torsion: Sometimes, there is also twisting of the ovary, which can lead to infertility. Ovarian torsion may disturb blood supply to the ovary as well. This leads to another complication called as ovarian necrosis, which leads inflammation and septic shock

3. Peritonitis: Peritonitis is the inflammation of the mucus membrane. As this membrane lines the abdomen cavity, it can cause excruciating pain and in some cases the resulting complications can be life threatening.

4. Infertility: Infertility caused by ovarian cysts can be temporary or permanent depending upon the extent of the damage. Hence, women suffering from ovarian cysts and those desirous of starting a family should take ovarian cysts really seriously.

5. Cancer: In rare but significant instances, ovarian cysts may even turn cancerous. The patient will then require the usual cancer treatment along with surgery, where generally both the ovaries are removed.

Besides these serious complications and risks, ovarian cysts also lead to excruciating pain and hormonal imbalance. This can affect the mental and emotional well being of the patient as well. However, conventional medicine very rarely pays attention to the mental and emotional complications that may develop because of ovarian cysts. The treatment options can cause many side effects like loss of fertility, weight gain, and reoccurrence of stronger cysts. Therefore, many women find it difficult to cope with the demands of the conventional treatment, which can worsen an already difficult condition.

Hence, to overcome the risks and complications of ovarian cysts along with the disease, you will need a, more comprehensive and holistic approach. Holistic approach is very effective as it treats the root cause of the condition and not the symptoms. Symptoms are attractive propositions to treat as relief in symptoms give a false sense of security. However, holistic approach shatters this conventional thinking by clearly eliminating the root cause. Therefore, holistic approach can not only treat ovarian cysts, but can also prevent the risks and complications of ovarian cysts in the bargain.

This article is based on the book, "Ovarian Cysts No More" by Mary Parker. This chronic disease is difficult to diagnose at times, as the symptoms are not always apparent. However, it is essential to understand ovarian cysts diagnosis and symptoms procedure, as the earlier you diagnose the condition, better is your changes of recovery. To accurately diagnose ovarian cysts, you need to be well versed with the symptoms of this condition.

Diagnosis of ovarian cysts:

Ovarian cysts are usually diagnosed by the gynecologist on the basis of the patient’s symptoms and some scientific tests. Sometimes, ovarian cysts come to light only during routine medical or pelvic examination as ovarian cysts may continue to exist without any symptoms. A woman suffering from possible ovarian cyst condition is asked to pay attention to the following symptoms, which are generally associated with the condition.

Irregular menstruation: Irregular menstruation signals the fact that all is not well with your gynecological health. Women suffering from ovarian cysts may suffer from amenorrhea, heavy bleeding, light bleeding etc. hence, any menstrual irregularity or abnormality should be checked out immediately.

Pelvic pain: Ovarian cyst can cause severe pelvic pain before during and after menstruation. Many women suffering from ovarian cyst also experience pain during sexual intercourse.

Bladder related problem: Cysts may put pressure on the bladder. This can lead to difficulty in emptying the bladder. Women also experience frequent urge to urinate. However, sometimes, emptying the bladder can also prove to be a difficult ordeal.

Infertility: Many women approach a gynecologist, when they fail to conceive. Ovarian cysts may cause infertility. Sometimes, miscarriages are also possible because of some complications associated with ovarian cysts.

Physical problems: Ovarian cysts may cause nausea, breathlessness, pain, vomiting and general discomfort. However, it is essential to understand that not all symptoms are experienced by women suffering from ovarian cysts. Also, some symptoms experienced by women may not be necessarily associated with ovarian cysts and hence, they may be ignored. Therefore, it is best that you diagnose the condition only with the help of an expert.

Tests of diagnosis:

There are many tests, which can be conducted by the gynecologist to conform the diagnosis. A few of these include blood tests, pelvic examination, ultrasound, pregnancy test and more. These tests aid in adequate ovarian cysts diagnosis and symptoms. Once the condition is diagnosed, treatment is essential. As ovarian cyst condition is difficult to understand because of the intricacies involved, straightforward conventional medicine treatment rarely works to cure the disease completely.

This complicated disease can be treated only with the help of multidimensional holistic approach. However, this condition is very traumatic for women who have to undergo conventional medical treatment for getting relief from this chronic disease. The conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts is the most common approach, which is used when treating this disease. However, the limited treatment options and the resulting stress can also be too much for a woman to handle. Therefore, more and more women are turning towards alternate forms of treatments for curing ovarian cysts.

Click Here To Discover How To Quickly And Easily Cure Ovarian Cysts Permanently

Understanding conventional medicinal approach:
Conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts is very simple and straightforward. There are three stages involved in conventional treatment of ovarian cysts.

Understanding the symptoms: There are certain textbook symptoms of ovarian cysts condition, which include irregular menstruation, pelvic pain, infertility, and more. The patients are asked to keep a tab on these symptoms so that the condition can be diagnosed as soon as possible. However, sometimes, ovarian cysts do not give rise to any symptom. Hence, they can be discovered accidentally during routine gynecological examination.

Diagnosing ovarian cysts: There are different ways of diagnosing ovarian cysts. Besides understanding the symptoms of the condition, the practitioner will also make use of Endovaginal ultrasound, CT scanning, blood test, Laproscopy and many other forms of tests to confirm his suspicions. Like the treatment, the diagnosis stage of the treatment can be equally traumatic.

Treatment: The treatment for ovarian cysts will depend upon the type of the cyst and its nature. If the cyst is benign, little or no treatment is required. However, in the case of serious condition, conventional medicine will recommended the following forms of treatment

Birth control pills: Birth control pills stop ovulation. They therefore repress ovarian cysts. They can also reduce the size of the follicles and help in reducing the size of the existing cysts.

Surgery: If the cysts are cancerous or if there are any other complications, then surgery is recommended. Surgery will again depend upon the type of cyst and the resulting complications. Sometimes, only the cyst is removed. However, it is not very uncommon to remove the ovaries to get rid of the cyst.

Besides the above, pain relievers are also given to provide relief from the pain caused by the cysts.

Disadvantage and side effects of treatment:

There are many disadvantages and side effects of conventional medicine approach to ovarian cysts. Birth control pills can cause prolonged infertility, even when the treatment is discarded. Also, the conventional treatment does not fully cure ovarian cysts and the surgery may also increase the chances of ovarian cysts in the long run. Hence, conventional medication is not considered to be an appropriate form of treatment for ovarian cysts. As the disease is very complex, a multidimensional approach is required to deal with the disease. This is provided only by the holistic approach.

Unlike conventional medicine, holistic approach targets the root causes of the disease and not the symptoms. Hence, holistic approach can cure ovarian cysts completely and can provide long-term relief, a task at which conventional wisdom shows its limitations. Therefore, when it comes to curing ovarian cysts, holistic approach is the best form of treatment.

Click Here To Discover How To Quickly And Easily Cure Ovarian Cysts Permanently

This article is based on the book, "Ovarian Cysts No More" by Mary Parker. While a majority of the ovarian cysts are simply functional in nature, some ovarian cysts can turn out to be cancerous.
As the first step of correctly diagnosing and treating ovarian cysts is to locate the cause of the disease, it is essential to understand the possible causes of ovarian cysts. However, there is no single cause of ovarian cysts. Ovarian cyst can be triggered by a variety of primary factors and secondary factors. It is imperative to understand these different factors in order to seek appropriate treatment.

Primary factors of ovarian cysts:

There are many primary factors, which lead to ovarian cysts. These factors should not be isolated however, as sometimes the combination of these factors can together lead to the causes of ovarian cysts.

Genetic predisposition: Genetic predisposition is often considered to be the primary cause of ovarian cyst as research has shown that the genetic pattern of women who suffer from this chronic condition is different as compared to women who never get ovarian cysts or PCOS. However, this should not be a death warrant as many times the genetic characteristics can be modified with the help of environmental factors and proper lifestyle related changes.

Poor dietary choices: Different types of food including the ones rich in carbohydrates, junk food toxic food and acidic food can bring about hormonal imbalance and can weaken your immune system making you more vulnerable to ovarian cyst. Similarly diet rich in sugar and low on fresh vegetables can make the task of flushing out toxins difficult thereby aggravating ovarian cyst problem.

Weak immune system: A weak immune system invites trouble, as it is not able to put up a natural fight against ovarian cyst triggers. Many factors including dietary factors and sleep deprivation can lead to weakened immune system.

Insulin resistance: High level of insulin can stimulate ovarian androgen production, which leads to the production of male hormones. This reduces the serum sex-hormone binding globulin or SHGB. The SHBG can in turn aggravate the ovarian cyst condition to quite an extent.

Failed ovulation process: Sometimes, the ovaries fail to release egg on a monthly basis. This fails to produce progesterone and brings about hormonal imbalance. This can then lead to the formation of ovarian cysts.

Click Here Now To Eliminate Ovarian Cysts in 8 Weeks!!

Besides the above primary factors, toxins in liver and even environmental toxins can aggravate ovarian cysts. Hence, ovarian cyst condition is not a simple one to understand or treat. Conventional wisdom blinded by hackneyed forms of treatment cannot treat and cure ovarian cysts. To treat this complex disease, a multidimensional view adopted by the holistic approach is needed.

Holistic approach is also effective as it deals with a variety of factors and manages to find out the root cause of the disease. Then, systematically with a comprehensive method, the practitioner can help you bring about many lifestyle changes, which can aid in treatment. Hence, when it comes to curing ovarian cyst, a holistic approach is required to understand the causes of ovarian cysts and to treat this condition in a scientific and holistic manner.

This article is based on the book, "Ovarian Cysts No More" by Mary Parker. The area may be dry, red and swollen and you may have a stinging sensation when you pass urine and, or discomfort during sex. Symptoms are usually worse in hot weather.
Genital irritation is often a reaction to soaps and perfumes in toiletries, but can also be due to an infection, another skin condition, or to not drying yourself properly after using the toilet.

See Your Doctor If:

You have a discharge, or pain passing urine

You have itching elsewhere and/or have a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis

You are losing weight without trying and/or, are drinking or urinating more than usual

You have black specks in your pubic hair

Irritation persists for more than 3-4 days after treating yourself at home.

Drug Remedies
There are three main drug remedies which are used in treating genital irritation:

Moisturizers - such as aqueous cream and emulsifying ointment soothe irritated skin. Apply it to your vulva about 3 times a day and use it as a substitute for soap when washing.

Antihistamines - such as clarityn allergy, nytol, etc. are used to relieve itching. A sedative antihistamine taken at bedtime, will also make it easier for you to sleep.

Vaginal Lubricants - will help to make sexual intercourse more comfortable. Use the lubricant if your vagina feels dry or sore during sex.

Self Help Measures

Use a cold compress. Wrap a pack of frozen peas or crushed ice in a wet towel, or soak a face cloth in cold water, then wring it out. Apply it gently to your vulva as often as needed. You could also sit in shallow cool or lukewarm bath for 10 - 15 minutes.

Resist the urge to scratch your vulva. In bed, wear a nightgown without underwear to let the air circulate around your genital area.

You can help prevent genital irritation by avoiding possible triggers and taking extra care with personal hygiene.

Do not use perfumed soaps, bubble baths, vaginal deodorants, or douches.

Wash your genital area once or twice a day with plain warm water or an unperfumed soap. Pat dry yourself with a soft towel or use a hairdryer on cool setting for a few seconds.

Put your laundry through an extra rinse and don't use fabric softeners.

Wipe yourself from front to back after a bowel movement and dry yourself thoroughly after passing urine. Use soft, unbleached, uncoloured, toilet paper.

Ask your partner to use hypoallergenic condoms rather than those quoted with a spermicide.

Don't use deodorized sanitary pads or panty liners.

Wear comfortable cotton underwear and change it daily. Choose tights with a cotton gusset, or stockings.

Don't wear tight fitting jeans.

Change out of your swimsuit promptly after a swim.

I promised the ladies that their turn would be coming up shortly. Being one to keep my promises...Here is the series that will run for 10 -12 posts.

Gentlemen you are welcome to sit in on these sessions...after all...knowledge is power.

Lets get started.

Vaginal Discharge

It is normal for a woman to have some discharge from the vagina. This is clear or white, the amount and consistency varying at different times in the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and in response to sexual arousal.
However, a discharge that has an unusual consistency or smell is usually a sign of infection.
The most common cause is thrush, a yeast infection that produces a discharge like cottage cheese, irritation in, or around the vagina and sometimes a burning sensation when you pass urine.
Yeast infection is not usually sexually transmitted. It is caused by factors that encourage overgrowth of yeast, such as:

taking antibiotics

wearing tight-fitting clothes

using vaginal douches and deodorants.

Before you read how to treat yourself for yeast infection, you need to be sure that it is yeast infection. Some types of vaginal discharge are symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection and need treatment from a doctor.
If you believe this is the case or if:

the discharge has blood stains, is greenish yellow or very foul smelling, or

you have lower abdominal pain and fever or other symptoms, or

you have repeated abnormal discharges or

you are pregnant.

Please see you doctor as soon as possible.

O.k, so you are sure that it is none of the above, in that case let me tell you how to treat yourself for yeast infection. You will need to start the treatment as soon as you notice any symptoms.

Sodium Bicarbonate also known as Baking Soda
To relieve itchiness and discomfort or soothe soreness and irritation, add 2 tablespoonfuls to a lukewarm, shallow bath and soak for about 20 minutes.

Un-perfumed soap
Use only water and un-perfumed soap on your genitals and be sure to rinse and dry well after bathing. If you are having a period, use only sanitary pads, no tampons at this time and be sure to change at least every 4 hours.

Garlic
Garlic is a big enemy of yeast, Oh yes. You can almost get immediate relief from the itching cause by yeast infection, by inserting a clove of garlic into the vagina every few hours as required for soothing relief.

Yoghurt
Live yoghurt is more than a dessert or snack it contains bacteria that help to fight yeast infection. Be sure to use un-sugared yoghurt as sugar will only make the infection worse. Rub the yoghurt on the outside of your vagina and put some in the top of a tampon applicator, then insert the tampon into the vagina and remove it an hour later.

So, now you know how to treat yourself for yeast infection. However if you would like to get rid of yeast infection for good, Guaranteed. Click Here!

The scientific term for Yeast Infection is Candidiasis, though due to slang it has adopted the name Yeast Infection and "thrush". Because of the nature of candidiasis, the severity of the condition ranges from simple cosmetic blemishes to life-threatening diseases. However, the general victims of Yeast Infections usually suffer from inflammation and discomfort in the region.

So, what exactly causes yeast infections? Yeast infection is contagious, and can be caused by vaginal exposure to some external substances. Some common causes are detergents or douches, or built up lactic acid. To simplify that, keep things away from that area that shouldn't be there.

There are four widely-accepted ways to treat yeast infections naturally. They are:

1.Yogurt.
Yogurt is a natural enemy of yeast. It can be eaten or applied to the vagina with a tampon that has been dipped in yogurt. Be sure to use a plain and un-sugared yogurt as sugar will only make the infection worse. As an alternative to the tampon, you can rub the yogurt on the outside of your vagina.

2.Garlic.
Yes, garlic is a big enemy of yeast. You can actually get almost immediate relief from yeast infection itching by inserting a garlic tab or clove into the vagina every few hours as required for soothing relief.

3.Apple-cider vinegar.
This, too, can be either taken internally or used externally. If you choose to use it externally, do not apply it to your vagina in full strength. It will burn like you can't believe. Instead, add a cup of it to your bathwater and then take a nice, long bath. And do not use white vinegar as it will actually feed the yeast.

4. .Oil of oregano.
This herb is seriously potent against yeast. Take it internally, daily, according to directions. Be sure the oregano oil you choose has a high carvacrol content as this is the active ingredient that will help cure the infection.

Now, it is important that you find the right cure. Personally, I recommend Yeast Infection Secret, because this company sells almost the exact same medicine as normal hospitals, but for one third of the price. Not to mention that you can have additional help through customer service, while to get a follow up at the doctors it would cost you a lot for a little time. The ability to master this exercise is extremely useful if you're suffering from:

stress

anxiety

tiredness

difficulty sleeping

depression

panic attacks, etc.

Deep breathing using the diaphragm and abdominal muscles is the basis of most relaxation methods.
Find a place where you won't be interrupted, take the phone off the hook and /or switch off your mobile/cell phone, and practice this exercise for 10-20 minutes each day.

Wear loose clothing and sit or lie in a comfortable position.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.

Breathe in slowly through your nose, hold your breath for a moment, then breathe out slowly. Try to breathe using your abdominal muscles so the lower hand moves more than the upper one.

Once you know that you are breathing from your abdomen, place your hands just below your ribs. Feel your hands move as your abdomen rises and falls.

When you feel more relaxed, let your hands drop down by your sides and simply enjoy the relaxation.

Most people recover rapidly with some self-help measures.

Self-Help Measures

Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids before going to bed and the next morning to reduce dehydration. Have a glass of water by your bed and take sips if you wake up in the night. Fruit juices which contain the natural sugar fructose, are particularly helpful.

Do not drink tea or coffee because they irritate the stomach and increase dehydration.

Eat if you can. Even a banana will help to boost low blood sugar levels.

Take a painkiller to help prevent or relieve a headache.

An antacid will help to reduce nausea.

Don't drink more alcohol to reduce your symptoms; this will only prolong the hangover.

Rest until you begin to feel better.

Don't drive. Alcohol remains in the blood stream for long periods, so it may still be unsafe to drive the day after you have been drinking.

Avoid a hangover by eating before you start drinking and alternate between alcoholic and soft drinks.

Seek Medical Advice If:

You have regular hangovers and are finding it hard to reduce your drinking.

You feel the need to drink alcohol first thing in the morning.

A good night's sleep usually solves the problem, but sometimes tiredness seems to drag on for days, and can interfere with your daily activities.
The most obvious cause is difficulty in sleeping, but you may also feel tired if you are stressed or a bit low, or if you've recently suffered an upset such as a bereavement.
An unhealthy diet and lack of exercise are common contributory factors.
Viral illnesses such as glandular fever and flu can leave you tired for weeks afterwards.
Sometimes, persistent tiredness is due to an underlying condition such as anaemia or thyroid problem.

Make an appointment to see your doctor if:

Tiredness is persistent and sleep doesn't help

You often feel tired for no apparent reason

You develop other symptoms

You still feel tired after trying the self help methods listed below for 2-3 weeks

Self-Help Measures
If you're feeling tired all the time, try the following adjustments to help you get your energy back.

Even when you're very busy, get enough sleep each night. Overdoing things, then trying to catch up on your rest at weekends, will throw out your sleep routine and leave you even more tired.

Never miss breakfast. Include fresh vegetables, fruit, cereals, and wholemeal bread, pasta and rice in your diet. Cut down on fatty foods such as cheese, eggs, red meat, sugar and salt.

Check that you are not over or underweight. If you need to lose or gain weight, do so gradually.

Try to spend time each day in fresh air. Exercise regularly, particularly if you have a sedentary job.

If you have had a viral illness, such as glandular fever or flu, it may take several weeks before you're back to normal. Take time off to recover and take things easy when you return to work or school.

If stress is contributing to 'burn out' make more time for leisure activities. Try some deep breathing and muscle relaxation exercises.

If you are sleep during the day or while driving, try a 'power nap' (see below).

Power Napping
If you find yourself nodding off during the day, or feeling drowsy while driving, a brief nap may help you to function better.

An ideal nap lasts about 10-15 minutes, but even a 5 minute sleep will leave you brighter and sharper afterwards. Sleeping for more than 15 minutes may leave you feeling groggy afterwards and more than 30 minutes may affect your sleep at night.

Take a daily nap at the same time each day so your body gets used to the routine. Use an alarm if you're worried about sleeping for too long.

Don't nap late in the day or fall asleep in front of the TV in the evening, and don't use naps to catch up on sleep if you are having difficulty sleeping.

Only very rarely is the cause a prostate or nervous system problem.

What You Can Do For Yourself

Because anxiety is a major part of premature ejaculation, talking about the problem with your partner may help to resolve it. There are also several techniques you can try.

If you are in a long-term relationship, share your feelings with your partner. Discuss the problem calmly and good-humouredly when you're not engaged in sex. Don't blame yourself or feel guilty.

Some men find wearing a condom dulls sensation sufficiently to delay ejaculation. Some types of condom have a desensitizing lubricant inside that contains a mild topical anaesthetic. These may be even more effective. Don't try using anaesthetic gel without a condom - it will reduce sensation in your partner, too.

Try using the squeeze technique to help you control ejaculation. (see practical technique below)

Focus your attention on your partner's pleasure during foreplay and delay penetration for as long as possible. If your partner is close to or has reached orgasm before penetration, you will both feel less anxious about premature ejaculation.

During intercourse, distract yourself by thinking about something totally unrelated and rather dull: count backwards in threes or think about work.

Try experimenting with different sexual positions. Having your partner on top, for example, may be less stimulating and help you delay ejaculation.

Practical Technique

The squeeze technique is a method of preventing premature ejaculation and can be carried out by you or your partner.

When you feel you're about to ejaculate, use your thumb and forefinger to squeeze the shaft of the penis just below the head on the upper and lower sides. This causes your erection to be partially lost, temporarily preventing ejaculation.

By practising this technique regularly, you can achieve greater control over ejaculation, and this will boost your sexual confidence. Eventually, you will no longer need to use the technique

Arrange to see your doctor if: you continue to experience premature ejaculation after following the advice here.

This could result in men having difficulty with erections.

Cycling puts pressure on the nerves which can also affect a man's sperm.

More than 60% of male cyclists experience genital numbness, according to Mr Nargund, a urology consultant.

He said: "The bicycle saddle makes contact where the nerves and blood vessels enter the back of the scrotum and penis. Numbness is common because the pressure of the saddle can impair the blood supply to this area. This can also affect the man's ability to get an erection."

Mountain bikers run a particular risk, as do those riding with too much pedal resistance.

Mr Nargund did not establish a clear link between cycling and male infertility, but said it is recognized as a possible side effect.
Cyclists must choose the right bike to avoid sexual problems, while a padded saddle and shorts are essential, he said.

"The male cyclist should know his bicycle well. An appropriate frame should be selected and adjustments made considering posture, height and balance," Mr Nargund said.

Regular rest periods and cycling in a lower gear are also advised in the article, published in the online urology journal BJU International on Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

Temporary impotence is unlikely to be a cause for concern if you are still able to achieve an erection by masturbating or if you sometimes wake with an erection.
Long-term impotence can be due to illnesses, such as diabetes and circulatory diseases, or drugs, such as diuretics and antidepressants. It may also be caused by anxiety or depression, or relationshipship problems. As you get older, it may take longer to get an erection and it may be less firm.

Warning
See your doctor if:

You suffer regularly from impotence or if you are taking a prescribed drug that may be causing the problem.

You think impotence may have a physical cause.

You have tried all the measures listed below and they are not helping.

What You Can Do For Yourself
There are several things you can do that may help you overcome temporary impotence.

Don't judge yourself harshly. If you are stressed or tired, for example, because of money worries, work, or recent illness, tackle the underlying problem.

If you are in a long-term relationship, talk to your partner. Share your worries and work together to try to solve the problem. It may help if there is less pressure on you to 'perform', so if impotence is making you nervous about sexual intercourse, try ways of sharing intimacy that reduce sexual anxiety. (see practical technique below).

To help relieve anxiety, try practising deep breathing and muscle relaxation exercises.

Reduce your alcohol intake; even better, avoid it altogether. Drinking too much alcohol can cause difficulty in getting an erection; recreational drugs can have a similar effect.

Stop smoking, or at least cut down if you smoke heavily. Young men who smoke, double their risk of long-term impotence in later life.

Practical Technique -Reducing sexual anxiety

Worrying about getting an erection can set up a cycle of 'performance anxiety'. One of the best ways to reduce anxiety is to take things slowly.

Take the pressure off. Take turns to explore your partner's body using stroking and massage. You should agree there will be no touching of genitals or breasts at this stage. This will help you both relax.

After several of these sessions, allow genital and breast stimulation, but refrain from intercourse.

Continue relaxed and leisurely stroking and massage until you begin to get erections agaian and feel comfortable about proceeding to intercourse.

Spend plenty of time touching and stroking your partner's body. Take things slowly and learn to relax.

Avoid drinking too much over a short time, however, as this may cause a sudden urge to pass urine.

Pass urine only when your bladder feels full. Take your time so that your bladder empties completely. Sometimes sitting on the toilet is more effective.

If you often need to get up at night, drink less in the evening and stop drinking a few hours before bedtime. Empty your bladder before going to bed.

Reduce your intake of tea, coffee, cola and alcohol. These drinks make your bladder fill quickly and cause a sudden or urgent need to pass urine.

Avoid carbonated drinks, citrus fruits and juices and spicy foods, as they may irritate your bladder.

Excess weight puts pressure on your bladder. So, try to lose some weight if you need to do so.

Taking regular exercise can help to reduce symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate; while a sendentary lifestyle tends to make them worse.

Minor bruising and chafing may occur after playing sports or after sexual activity.
Soreness at the tip may be due to poor hygiene or irritation from soaps or spermicides, or result from infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Other symptoms of a STI include a rash, discharge from the penis, and pain when passing urine. Pain that occurs only when your penis is erect or during sex, may be due to an overtight foreskin.

Warning
Seek immediate medical help if:

You have a painful erection that lasts long after arousal has passed

You have difficulty rolling your foreskin forwards again after it has been retracted

You suspect that you have a sexually transmitted infection

You are not sure what is causing the pain

Pain in your penis persists, or you develop new symptoms.

What You Can Do For Yourself
There are several actions you can take that will ease pain and help prevent soreness:

Keep your penis and foreskin clean. Have a bath or shower every day. If you have a foreskin, wash underneath it with water and unperfumed soap. Dry the end of your penis thoroughly

Wear loose underwear to avoid discomfort.

If the head of your penis gets inflamed or sore during sex, apply a water-soluble lubricating jelly beforehand. Lubricating jellies are widely available and will make sex more comfortable. Use it to help prevent soreness that may develop because of irritants or vigorous activity.

Wash your genitals after intercourse. If you think the problem is due to the condoms you use, switch to a non-allergenic type or one with a different spermicide.

If you have a small injury on the tip of your penis, let it heal completely before having sex again.

If you think you may be sensitive to soaps and washing powder, use only non-biological powder for your underclothes and avoid fabric softeners.

If you have a sexually transmitted infection, bathing with salt water will help relieve symptoms (see practical tip, below). Tell your partner you have a STI; they may also need treatment.

Practical Tip

Gently bathing your penis 2 or 3 times a day in warm, salty water, will help relieve soreness, swelling, and inflammation.
Add a handful of salt to bath two-thirds full. If you are finding urination uncomfortable or painful, pass urine while lying in a warm bath, and shower yourself and the bath afterwards.

That's it for today. Stay Tuned.

A painful, tender scrotum, sometimes with swelling, may be due to an infection (epididymitis). You may also have a fever and pain passing urine. Other causes of pain, include mumps and rarely, testicular cancer.

Warning!!
Seek immediate medical help if:

You develop sudden or severe pain in the scrotum

Pain after an injury to the area, persists for more than one hour

You have had a mild pain for more than 2 days

You think you have epididymitis

You find a lump in the scrotum or testes

What You Can Do For Yourself
Try the following home treatments alone or in conjunction with treatment from your doctor.

To relieve pain and swelling, apply an ice pack (such as a bag of frozen peas or crushed ice in a plastic bag wrapped in a wet towel) to the testicles. Hold for about 10 minutes and do this twice a day.

Lie on your back with a rolled-up towel placed between your legs and under the scrotum to lift it and relieve discomfort. When moving around, wear an athletic support or two pairs of close-fitting underpants, especially if the testicles are swollen.

You can also take a painkiller. Painkillers can be used to reduce pain and swelling in the scrotum and also fever. Take an inflammatory painkiller such as ibuprofen or ask your pharmacist/chemist.

When the pain has eased, check your testicles regularly for lumps.

Testicular Self-Examination

All men should examine their testicles regularly to detect lumps or other changes that may be an early sign of cancer.

Examine yourself once a month after a warm bath when the scrotum is relaxed. Check for any lumps or swellings. Both testicles should be smooth except along the top and back, where you will feel a soft tube (epididymis) that carries and stores sperm. To examine your testicles; carefully roll your fingers and thumb across the entire surface of each testicle in turn.

Compare one testicle with the other if you are not sure whether one feels normal (it is unusual to develop cancer in both testicles at the same time). if you notice any changes in either your testicles or your scrotum, consult you doctor promptly.

In the next posts we will look at the problem of a painful penis.

Their most obvious use is to reverse narrowing of the blood vessels, consequently resulting in a lower oxygen supply to the body. This problem occurs in angina, when narrowing of the coronary arteries reduces blood supply to the heart muscle. They are often used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Vasodilators widen the blood vessels by relaxing the muscles surrounding them. They achieve this either by affecting the actions of the muscles directly or by interfering with the nerve signals that govern contraction of the blood vessels.

As well as relieving the symptoms of the disorders for which they are taken, they can have many minor side effects related to their action on circulation.

Flushing and headaches are common at the start of the treatment.

Dizziness and fainting may also occur as a result of lowered blood pressure.

Dilation of the blood vessels can also cause fluid build-up, leading to swelling, particularly of the ankles.

Diuretics
Diuretic drugs help to turn excess body water into urine. As the urine is expelled, two disorders are relieved: the tissues become less water-swollen and the heart action improves because it has to pump a smaller volume of blood.
There are several classes of diuretics, each of which has different uses, modes of action and effects, but they all act on the kidneys, the organs that govern the water content of the body.

Among other things diuretics are also widely used to treat heart failure in which the heart's pumping mechanism has become weak. In the treatment of this disorder, they remove fluid that have accumulated in the tissues and lungs. The resulting drop in blood volume reduces the work of the heart.

All diuretics increase the frequency with which you need to pass urine. This is most noticeable at the start of treatment. People who have suffered from oedema may notice that swelling, particularly of the ankles, is reduced, and those with heart failure may find that breathlessness is relieved.

Anti-Arrhythmics
The heart contains two upper and two lower chambers, which are known as the atria and ventricles (see pt2). The pumping actions of these two sets of chambers are normally coordinated by electrical impulses that originate in the pacemaker and then travel along conducting pathways, so that the heart beats with a regular rhythm.
If this coordination breaks down, the heart will beat abnormally; either irregularly or faster or slower than usual. The general term for abnormal heart rhythm is arrhytmnia.

Arrhythmias may occur as a result of a birth defect, coronary heart disease, or other less common heart disorders. A variety of more general conditions, including over-activity of the thyroid gland, and certain drugs, such as caffeine and anticholinergic drugs, can also disturb heart rhythm.

All anti-arrhythmic drugs alter the conduction of electrical signals in the heart. However, each drug or drug group has a different effect on the sequence of events controlling the pumping action. Some block the transmission of signals to the heart; some affect the way in which signals are conducted within the heart; others affect the response of the heart muscle to the signals received.

These drugs usually prevent symptoms of arrhythmia and may restore a regular heart rhythm.

Unfortunately, many of these drugs tend to depress normal heart function, and may produce dizziness on standing up, or increased breathlessness on exertion. Mild nausea and visual disturbances are also fairly frequent.
***************************************
This concludes our series. Since the actions they block originate in the adrenal glands (and elsewhere) they are also sometimes called beta adrenergic blocking agents.

WHY THEY ARE USED

These drugs are used for treating angina, hypertension and irregular heart rhythms. They are sometimes given after a heart attack to reduce the likelihood of abnormal heart rhythms, or further damage to the heart muscle. These drugs are also prescribed to improve heart function in heart muscle disorders, known as cardiomyopathies.

THE USES AND EFFECTS OF BETA BLOCKERS

Blocking the transmission of signals through beta receptors in different parts of the body, produces a wide variety of benefits and side effects, depending on the disease being treated.

Brain - Dilation of the blood vessels surrounding the brain is inhibited, thus preventing migraine.

Eye - Beta blocker eye drops reduce fluid production and so lower pressure inside the eye.

Heart - Slowing of the heart rate and reduction of the force of the heartbeat reduces the workload of the heart, helping to prevent angina and abnormal heart rhythms, but this action may worsen heart failure.

Lungs - Constriction of the airways may provoke breathlessness an asthmatics or those with chronic bronchitis.

Blood Vessels - Constriction of the blood vessels may cause coldness of the feet and hands.

Muscles - Muscle tremor due to anxiety or to over-activity of the thyroid gland is reduced.

Blood Pressure - This is lowered because the rate and force at which the heart pumps blood into the circulatory system is reduced.

RISKS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

The main risks of beta blockers is that of provoking breathing difficulties as a result of their blocking effect on beta receptors in the lungs. All beta receptors are prescribed with caution for people who have asthma, bronchitis, or other forms of respiratory disease.

They are not commonly prescribed for people who have poor circulation in the limbs, or people who are subject to heart failure. Diabetics who need to take beta blockers should be aware that they may notice a change in the warning signs of low blood sugar; such as palpitations and tremors which may be suppressed.

Beta blockers should not be stopped suddenly after prolonged use; this may provoke a sudden and severe recurrence of symptoms of the original disorder, even a heart attack. The blood pressure may also rise markedly. When treatment with beta blockers needs to be stopped, it should be withdrawn gradually under medical supervision.

That's all for now folks. In the next post we'll conclude our 3 part series on My Heart and Me. This post will focus on :

DIGITALIS DRUGS

Digitalis is the collective term for the naturally occurring substances that are found in the leaves of plants of the foxglove family and used to treat certain heart disorders.

The principal drugs in this group are digoxin and digitoxin. Digoxin is more commonly used because it is shorter acting and dosage is easier to adjust.

Why They Are Used
Digitalis drugs do not cure heart disease but improve the heart's pumping action and so relieve many of the symptoms that result from poor heart function. They are useful for treating conditions in which the heart beats irregularly, too rapidly, when it pumps too weakly or when the heart muscle is damaged and weakened following a heart attack.

How They Work
The normal heart beat results from electrical impulses generated in nerve tissue within the heart. These cause the heart muscle to contract and pump blood. By reducing the flow of electrical impulses in the heart, digitalis makes the heart beat more slowly.

The force with which the heart muscle contracts depends on chemical changes in the heart muscle. By promoting these chemical changes, digitalis increases the force of muscle contraction each time the heart is stimulated. This compensates for the loss of power that occurs when some of the musle is damaged following a heart attack. The stronger heart beat increases blood flow to the kidneys. This increases urine production and helps to remove the excess fluid that often accumulates as a result of heart failure.

How They Affect You
Digitalis relieves the symptoms of heart failure - fatigue, breathlessness. swelling of the legs - and increases your capacity for exercise. The frequency with which you need to pass urine is also increased initially.

Risks and Special Precautions
These drugs can be toxic and, if blood levels rise too high, they may produce symptoms of digitalis poisoining. These include:

excessive tiredness

confusion

loss of appetite

nausea

vomiting

visiual disburbances and

diarrhoea

If such symptoms occur it is important to report them to your doctor promptly.
Digoxin is normally removed from the body by the kidneys; if kidney function is impaired the drug is more likely to accumulate and cause toxic effects. Digitoxin, which is broken down in the liver, is sometimes preferred in such cases although it too can accumulate after repeated dosage if liver function is severly impaired.

Both digoxin and digitoxin are more toxic when blood potassium levels are low. Potassium deficiency is commonly caused by diuretic drugs, so that people taking these along with digitalis drugs need to have the effects of both drugs and blood potassium levels carefully monitored. Potassium supplements may be required.

It is accelerated by smoking.

By the time they reach their 50s, many people have quite badly furred arteries on which plaques (fatty streaks on the walls of the arteries which have developed into fibrous growths) may have already built up, increasing the risks of a heart attack.

The ideal way to prevent atherosclerosis is to take plenty of exercise and eat a healthy diet that is high in fibre and low in saturated fats (found in high-fat dairy products, fatty meats and hard margarines).

Foods That Help

Saturated fatty acids, which are found in hard fats like butter, some margarines, meat and cheese, increase levels of cholesterol in the blood. Replacing these with:

vegetable oils rich in monosaturates such as olive and rapeseed oils or polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as sunflower, soya and corn oil reduces cholesterol levels.

However, when liquid oils are hardened (by a process called hydrogenation) for commercial use, as in the making of biscuits or margarine, some of them are converted into trans fatty acids. Recent research suggests that these trans fats may increase the risk of heart disease as well as raise blood cholesterol levels.

Foods rich in dietary fibre, especially the soluble type found in oats, beans and lentils, can help to lower blood cholesterol levels, though to a lesser extent than is acheived by reducing saturated fat or even dietary cholesterol, such as that found in egg yolks.

Including garlic in your diet is said to lower blood cholesterol levels; for many people, garlic pills are a convenient way to boost their intake.

Recent American research seems to show that the more green vegetables you eat, the less likely you are to develop heart problems. Eating moderate amounts of nuts, especially walnuts and almonds (which are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids) can also reduce coronary risk and can lower blood cholesterol.

Other fatty acids found in oily fish, such as herring, mackerel, pilchards, salmons and sardines are thought to prevent the risks of thrombosis. Eating oily fish twice a week will provide the equivalent of 1g per day of omega 3, the fatty acid which helps to prevent blood clots forming in arteries. Fish oil supplements have the same effect.

Guess What

A daily dose of alcohol is great. Because alcohol dilates small blood vessels and increases the blood flow to the tissues, a moderate intake of up to 3 glasses of red wine a day can help to stave off coronary heart disease, especially in middle-aged and elderly men, even if they have already had a heart attack.

Alcohol also increases the level of high density lipoproteins - which are protective molecules that transport cholesterol away from the body tissues and artery walls. But too much alcohol increases blood pressure and can cause irregular heart rhythms, precipitating a coronary attack.

Nutrionists have discarded the old concept of dull, bland foods being vital to the treatment of heart problems. Eat well but sensibly, they say.

Stay tuned for a series of posts that will look at the various drugs, used in the treatment of heart problems. The atrium and ventricle on the left side, pump oxygenated blood to the body, while the chambers on the right pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs. Backflow of blood is stopped by valves at the chamber exits.

What Can Go Wrong
The efficiency of the circulation may be impaired by weakening of the heart's pumping action (heart failure), or irregularity of heart rate. The blood vessels may also be clogged by fatty deposits. This in turn reduces the blood supply to the brain, the extremities, or the heart muscle, causing angina. These disorders can be complicated by the formation of clots that may block a blood vessel. A clot in the arteries supplying the heart muscle is known as coronary thrombosis; a clot in an artery inside the brain is the most frequent cause of stroke.
One common circulatory disorder is unusually high blood pressure (hypertension), in which the pressure of circulating blood on the vessel walls is increased. Several other conditions, such as migraine and Raynaud's disease, are caused by temporary alterations to blood vessel size.

Who Is Most At Risk
Among the major factors known to increase the risk of heart disease, are raised blood cholesterol levels, cigarette smoking, hypertension, obesity and diabetes. In both men and women, the risk of coronary disease rises rapidly with increasing age.
Heart disease tends to run in families. if either parent, a brother or a sister has suffered a heart attack before the age of 55, the risk to their immediate relatives is ten times greater than for members of families with no history of cardiac problems.
During their reproductive years, women are less prone than men to atherosclerosis and heart attcks because the oestrogen keeps their blood cholesterol low. After the menopause, however, when their cholesterol levels rise more quickly than those of men, women become increasingly vulnerable to coronary heart disease (CHD).
Some protection is afforded to women during the menopause and afterwards from hormone replacement therapy(HRT), which lowers cholesterol levels and thus reduces the risk of a heart attack. Nevertheless, statistically, older women are more likely to die of heart disease than from any other single cause.

Why Drugs Are Used
Because those suffering from heart disease often have more than one problem, several drugs may be prescribed at once. Many act directly on the heart to alter the rate and rhythm of the heart beat. These are known as anti-arrhythmics and include beta blockers and digoxin.
Other drugs affect the diameter of the blood vessels, either dilating them to improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure or constricting them.
Drugs may also reduce blood volume and fat levels and alter clotting ability. Diuretics (used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure) increase the body's excretion of water. Lipid-lowering drugs reduce blood cholesterol levels, thereby minimizing the risk of atherosclerosis.
Drugs to reduce blood clotting are administered if there is a risk of abnormal blood clots forming in the heart, veins or arteries. Drugs that increase clotting are given when the body's natural clotting mechanism is defective.

Well, that's all for now folks. Next we will look into the matter of prevention and foods that help.
Your comments are welcome
