The “BeCode” product family from Beloxx GmbH & Co KG (Wuppertal, Germany) is an electronic locking system that functions without keys and can be used in hospitals. It is suitable for both initial installation and retrofitting. An adapter allows it to be combined with most standard locking systems. With the “BeCode air” version, the lock is opened and closed using a transponder. It is well-suited for use in buildings in which RFID systems have been installed for access control.

Site Prepared For New Wis. Memory Care Facility

Design of the new Cottages at Cedar Run in West Bend, Wis., will focus on resident-centered care.

A ground blessing was held at the site for The Cottages at Cedar Run, a new community-based residential facility (CBRF) in West Bend, Wis.

Affiliated with the United Church of Christ, the 60-unit memory care CBRF joins Cedar Community, a not-for-profit continuum of care provider.

N.J. Hospital Expands With New MOB

Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge, N.J., is adding a medical office building as part of an ongoing growth and renewal program. The facility will include a new imaging center, operating suite, physician offices, and an ambulatory surgery center.

Construction started on the Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC) in Old Bridge, N.J., where a new medical office building (MOB) is expected to be completed in summer 2014.

Minn. Hospital Expanding ER

The new emergency department at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., will allow the hospital to treat 13,000 more patients per year.

Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., is building a $39 million new and expanded emergency room.

The replacement ER is designed to treat 43,000 patients per year, compared to the 30,000 patients the current facility can now handle, reports the Pioneer Press. The new ER will also include 18 23-hour observation beds.

Second Round of Health Care Innovation Awards Launched

The $1B initiative by CMS focuses on four target areas to provide better health care and lower costs.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released round two of the Health Care Innovation Awards. Under the announcement, CMS will spend up to $1 billion for awards and evaluation of projects that test new payment and service delivery models that will deliver better care and lower costs.

The second round of the Health Care Innovation Awards is seeking proposals in the following categories:

The 8000-square-foot addition in Andover, Kan., will include an MRI facility and expanded bed space in the ER.

Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kan., announced a roughly 8,000-square-foot expansion to accommodate more bed capacity in its ER and a new MRI facility, Wichita Business Journal reports.

Key Construction (Wichita, Kan.) is serving as general contractor on the project and GLMV Architecture (Houston) is the architect, according to the article.

Carl R. Darnall Army Hospital Tops Out

Construction of the new medical center in Fort Hood, Texas, is expected to be completed by 2015.

Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center announced the completion of the structural phase of its Fort Hood, Texas, hospital, KWTX-TV News reports. Construction officials say the hospital is about 40 percent complete and is expected to open in 2015.

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. (St. Louis, Mo.) has opened a new Kansas City office to serve clients and partners on the western side of Missouri and in Kansas. Barry Sutherland will lead the 3,500-square-foot office as director, including business development responsibilities. Brad Schoen will serve as preconstruction director. There will be four full time staff with future growth expected. The office is supported by McCarthy’s Central Division out of St. Louis.
