We constantly lament that life has become very hectic; people don’t have time for basic things like manners, for enquiring upon each other’s health, for lending a helping hand in times of need. We may be at times more concerned about wealth than our well-being. It’s time we admitted that there’s more to life than money. “Well-being” implies improved health and happier people and can’t be measured by money. It’s about the beauty of our surroundings, the quality of our culture and, above all, the strength of our relationships.

Some kinds of relationship skills – like communication skills and teamwork – act to support social relationships, and investment in these skills is reflected in the form of our growth. If we elaborate more on soft skills, these are the ones that define our approach towards work, life, problems, etc. They refer to the cluster of personality traits, social graces, and facility with language, personal habits, friendliness and optimism that mark people to varying degrees. Soft skills complement hand skills, which are the technical requirements of a job. The most valued soft skills include communications (both verbal and written), interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem solving, time-management, analytical and adaptability. Basic training in soft skills generally covers communication, self-awareness, empathy, social etiquettes, and creativity, leadership and presentation skills.

As soft skills are people skills, the best part about mastering them is that their application is not limited to our profession. Their scope extends to all aspects of life. This attitude difference helps us maintain focus and results in higher levels of quality work. Organizational changes seem to be increasing our requirement for “soft” skills such as communication, teamwork, time management and flexibility.

Though most of us agree that these skills are important, very few of us give these skills high priority. The effort towards acquiring soft skills should begin with our recognition of the lack of it. At times, we might assume that we don’t need to improve. Therefore, an honest introspection is a must.

Barely after two weeks of attendance in Communication Training, one of the fellow employees paid me the biggest compliment by saying that in his recent official tour, he was able to converse confidently in English with officials unlike his previous hesitant efforts. His beaming face was proof of his raised level of confidence. If a few days of training can make such a difference, imagine what can be achieved through regular sessions.

Hearing such works of newfound confidence have since become a regular experience. As most of the departments have now become involved in the training process, it’s common practice for people to voice their joy in being able to communicate better. I bask in the warmth of the glow of satisfaction on their faces. The fast that more and more people are opting voluntarily for the training proves that we have successfully communicated the importance of soft skills.

Finally, we can say that competition being very stiff, only those, who are hardworking, honest and competent individuals with soft skills to match, are the ones who succeed. They are the ones, who not only find a place, but also retain their jobs and grow. This job stability and economic security gives us a feeling of contentment and well-being.

Computers and televisions were very scarsely present in early years but 8 out of 10 houses own computer and television in developed world and frequency is only slightly law in developing world. Also outdoor games are becoming more of obsolete and children are getting addicted to TV screens and video games. But all these at the same time bringing more of health hazardz due to inactivity like obesity.

Recently researchers from Mayo clinic has come up with an idea to keep your child stick to TV and Video games but with activity component. They did a study and 25 children were followed Fifteen children were of normal weight for their height and frame; and 10 were mildly obese. Both groups were tested while sitting and watching television, playing a traditional video game, playing two types of activity-required video games, and watching television while walking on a treadmill.

The results clearly showed that watching television with sitting and playing traditional video games uses similar energy while when you add a component of activity to it like treadmill during watching television and putting them in video games like catching balls uses more than triple energy.

Interpretation of study by Mayo clinic researchers is that putting more of activity related components in video games may be the best possible approach to avoid rising obesity in young generation and also to limit the time spent behind these activities to max 2 hrs a day.

Computers and video games has definitely important role in developement of child in many ways but importance of outdoor games should not be neglected for fiteness and healthy life of young generation.

There is nothing new and everyone knows that smoking tobacco is injurious to health but still the basic approach in helping people quiting smoking is to making them aware about dangers of tobacco smoking again and again. So here are some dangerous facts about tobacco smoking.

Tobacco is the only legally available consumer product which kills people when it is used as directed.Tobacco use is the second leading cause of death. It is the fourth leading cause of disease. Globally, 5 million people one in ten adults die of tobacco use each year. If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause some 10 million deaths each year by 2020.

Half the people that smoke today about 650 million people will die of a tobacco-related disease.
In India, on million people die of smoking-related disease each year.
Smoking causes about 30 per cent of all cancer deaths (including 90 per cent of lung cancer deaths), 17 per cent of all heart disease deaths and 1at least 8- per cent of deaths from bronchitis and emphysema.
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds, which are present either as gases or as tiny particles, These include:
Nicotine is an addictive substance that stimulates the central nervous system, including the heartbeat rate and blood pressure. In large quantities nicotine is extremely poisonous.
Tar is deposited in the lungs and respiratory system and gradually absorbed. It is a mixture of many different chemicals, including formaldehyde, arsenic, cyanide, benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, toluene, acrolein.
Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin in the blood more easily than oxygen does, thus reducing the amount of oxygen circulating in the body.

These are the facts published in a leading newspaper of India- Hindustan Times.

Stopping smoking or avoiding nicotine addiction is definately not easy task but at the same time it is not impossible. There are thousands of people quite smoking daily and there are hundereds of ways to do it. In United States smoking has started becominga taboo and just because of that it is becoming difficult to laigh up cigarrette in restaurants or any other public place. Also now there are some litigations being implemented to stop smokers smoking in their own house as well. Also governments in various countries have banned advertizements and promortions of this products.

We all know that smoking can adversely affects your health and has been associated woth many of the chronic and severe diseases, in many of the developing countries there still not enough awareness about dangers of smoking. And according to one publication of WHO almost 50 percent of smokers die prematurely due to nicotine related problems.

Dr. Kasliwal director, cardiology, Escorts heart institute and Research Centre said to Hindustan Times ” Smoking is one of the leading causes of heart attacks among people in their thirties and forties, but unfortunately, patients seek help only after they develop health problems and are advised to quit. That is one reason why we have set up a Centre of Early Detection of Cardiovascular Disease Escorts to help identify risk factors among the young so that they can take preventive measures such as quitting smoking early in life.”

According to experts many of the smokers do not require any help to quit smoking. But for those who find it difficult to quit can always take help of various deaddiction centers and try any of the hndreds of remedies which we will be covering in our future posts here.

So if you are the one who is trying to quit smoking but finding it difficult, stay tune on Healthline99.com for latest remedies that you can try.

Synonyms: Migraine, Severe Headache, Headache Hitamine, Episodic Paroxysmal Hemicrania, Cluster Headache, Migranious Neuralgia, Sick Headache

If you see the overall revalence of some of the chronic diseass like Diabetes, Asthma or Hypertension, you will find that migraine is one of the commonest of all and though very few people seek advice for preventing its severe headache. There has been few studies carried out which suggests that one of four woman suffers from migraine and incidence of its attacks are far common in reproductive age group.

Also in developing world still there is not enough awareness about disease and as female very often express their feelings and go for expert advice. Most of the patients believe that this is tension headache due to stress and it does not require any treatment.

Most important of all in preventing migraine attack s to understand what is it? Migraine usually starts with dull aching pain in head or neck, usually only on one side. Aura precedes the pain is classical and nause, sweating, visual disturbances, photophobia are common. Migraine is caused by lack of serotonin which dilates the blood vessels and causes pain. Stress, lack of sleep, spicy food, chocolate all reduces the serotonin in body and thus avaoiding this precipitating factors reduce chances of migraine attack.

Here are some simple steps and medications to prevent migraine headache:

Avoid above mentioned precipitating factors.

Regular sleep and food habits and relaxation techniques may be helpful.

Menstruation also is trigger for migraine and this sometimes can be treated with hormonal balance by oral contraceptive pills. But consult before self medication as oral contraceptive pills can sometimes worsen the migraine and iit has side effects too.

Use regular pain killers like aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen for mild to moderate headache.

Use stronger medicines like ergotamine, tryptan only in severe headaches.

All over the world vehicular accidents has been the major cause of noninfectious diseases deaths and is much worse in developing countries where road conditions and rules are still not proper. But at the same time relationship between different demographic factors and vehicular accidents is also very important. There is numerous variations in age and sex of drivers all over the world and to find out this factors and their risk association with accidents is equally important to avoid serious injuries and mortalities.

Studies carried out in Purdue University in Indiana, US suggested that there is significant variations in severity of injuries between male and female group as well three age groups.

As such there is no convincing data available about why these variation is there but still very helpful for preventing measures. Some of the conclusions of the study includes

Mortality is haighest among older than younger.

Driver fatality in vehicle with more than two passengers is higher in young age group than older age group.

Vehicle of more than 5 year old age found to have higher mortality in younger than olders.

Similarly there were few conclusion that alcohol, falling asleep, rural setting increases the risk of fatality.

We can put many speculation for this conclusions but there is no scientific evidence for reasons behind these reasons.

From the title you must be thinking that its crazy!!! How can eating fish early in life can protect you from allergies? But recent studies carried out in sweden have given results which might give you answer. They have followed up almost 3000 children from birth to 4 years of age and their results clearly suggest that those who start eating fish before the age of one year are at low risk of developing Asthma, nasal allergies and other allergic conditions.

As such this study does not mean that eating fish directly protects from allergies but itonly helps when it is consumed before the age of 1 year. Omega 3 fats in fish supports development of immune system in body is evident from this study.

There was earlier study done on pregnant women also suggested that those who have taken fish pills during pregnancy also had reduced allergic problems. Now question is when and how to start this supplement. But in general one can start solid food after 6months of age.

Conclusion is that Omega 3 fat in fish has strong anti inflammatory property and also supports developmen of immune system.

IT has been speculated for last few years that chemical in Air Freshner might have some bad effects on lung function and morphology but till now we did not have any solid evidence to proove it. But now we have two sets of studies which gives strong indication that these speculations or true and Air freshners indeed damages ypour lung function.

A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, followed 953 Americans, average age 37, for six years and an another study published in journal Thorax last year both has more or less similar results. Earlier study found out that higher the levels of 1,4-DCB in blood more the damage and has prooved that with high levels of this chemical reduces lung function by 10 % that in those who have law levels. Latter study showed result that risk of Asthma increses with incresing level of this compound in blood.

1,4-dichlorobenzene is common in many of the routinely used products like air freshner, mothballs, tobacco smoke and toilet deodorizers. Also NIH study published that this compound can cause slightly reduction in lung function. But to avoid what you can do is just to minimize the exposure and use of such products.
