Insomnia Higher Death Risk In Men – A new study has shown that insomnia could potentially be deadly to men. It is said that this is especially true for men who suffer with chronic insomnia, and those who get less than six hours of sleep a night. The study has shown that men who suffer with insomnia are up to as much as five times more likely to die than men who sleep well every night. The report also stated that those with hypertension or diabetes as well as insomnia are up to as much as seven times more likely to die.

Further in the report it states that the effects of chronic insomnia in women are not nearly as bad. However, this may not be the case, as administrators for the study claimed that the women in the study were not as closely monitored as the men in the study were. There were many other factors that were taken into consideration when the study was conducted. These included things like smokers, drinkers, people with depression, and people with sleep apnoea.

Although these results may seem worrying, it is not a good idea to let it get in the way of your sleep obviously. Particularly if you are a man. There have been several studies in the past which have produced similar results, and also those which have produced very different results. An experimental drug being made and test for Alzheimer’s disease has been stopped by it’s manufacturer, Eli Lilly. The reason for this, is that the drug did not stop memory loss in the suffers, and it also had the major side affect of increasing the risk of skin cancer in those who were treated with the experimental drug.

The U.S. based company is taking a blow, with much time and effort going into the drug, semagacestat, which, if it had proven successful, would have been a quality earner for the company. As it stands, there are still a few options left to the Eli Lilly, such as solanezumab and two other experimental drugs as a possible cure for the disease.

How the drug semagacestat works is that it prevents nzyme gamma secretase from producing the plaque beta amyloid. Alzheimer’s suffers are seen to have plaques and tangles, another protein, are found in their brains. What it thought, is that helping to clear the brain of this will help the suffer with their memory loss, and ability to recall their memories easier.

The setback will not harm the company too much, according to Eli Lilly Chief Executive Officer John Lechleiter, who will continue pursuing a cure for this disease.

A pain expert from the Atlanta Center for Behavioral Medicine has said that women have the tendency to suffer from chronic conditions that cause pain more often, for longer periods, more intensely, and sometimes with more than one condition at a time.

Jennifer Kelly categorizes chronic pain as anything that causes significant discomfort for more than six months without relief through any kind of medical treatment. This include IBS, migraines, arthritis, carpel tunnel, fibromyalgia and other conditions.

“Chronic pain affects a higher proportion of women than men around the world. We need to encourage women to take a more active role in their treatment and reduce the stigma and embarrassment of this problem,” Kelly said in her report while she showed her findings.

It is hard to say what actually causes this problem, or why it seems to target women more than men. But it could be anything from hormonal differences to the way that medication affects both men and women.

Some people are able to sleep through anything, and some will fly awake at the sound of a cough three rooms away. For many years, the reason for this has been a mystery. But now scientists believe they know why.

A new study has shown that there may be an extra protective quality to the number of ‘spindles’ located in the part of the brain that is responsible for monitoring senses, the thalamus. Spindles protect the brain for interruptions due to things like sound, and the more you have, the harder you will be to wake up.

The study, conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, watched 12 volunteers during their sleep. Each was between the ages of 20 and 46 with no prior history of sleep problems or disorders.

Each of three nights were spent with different noises, or no noise at all. Those with more spindles in the thalamus were able to ignore sounds like a flushing toilet or low voices speaking, while others who had a lower amount would wake up.

Scientists are not sure why spindles are produced more in some people, but whatever it is the more you have the more you will benefit in your sleep. Because small things like a car outside can wake those of us without them, sleep will be less restful than for those who can ignore them.

The study has been published in Current Biology.

In many underdeveloped countries, the rotavirus remains one of the leading causes of child death, killing almost 500,000 every year, and causing serious health risks in children who have less severe cases.

But a new vaccine may offer hope in eliminating the severe symptoms that often lead to dehydration and death, such as vomiting, fever, and diarrhea.

Two studies have confirmed that this new vaccine is safe for use on infants and children. The first was conducted on 2,036 infants aged 4 weeks to 12 weeks in the Asian countries of Bangladesh and Vietnam, where the rotavirus is still prevalent.

The second study was conducted on 5,468 children between the ages of 4 weeks and 12 weeks in several African nations, including Ghana, Mali, and Kenya. In each study, the effectiveness was found to be between 39% and 48%, with limited side effects, despite the young age of the patients.

According to the study leaders at the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, the studies proved that the vaccine had the “potential to halve the incidence of severe rotavirus gastroenteritis in developing populations in Asia. Alongside efficacy results for this vaccine in Africa, our study supports WHO’s strong recommendation for expansion of rotavirus vaccine use to the poorest nations in Africa and Asia.”

They are recommending an immediate production for mass use within those two nations, and the study has been published in scientific journal The Lancet.

It also showed that more than thirty percent of Hispanic adults living in America were obese. Some states in America have already rolled out new schemes to help Americans eat healthier and do more exercise to combat the obesity problem, and many states have a lot more options for people who want to lose weight such as bike trails and many different places to walk. The government has said that more things need to be put in place to encourage and help other states to eat healthier and combat obesity. The cost will be huge, but a lot less of the cost incurred by the millions of already obese people.

A report by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Center for Injury Research and Policy has shown that the most common poisoning injury for children under six is still spray cleaners, though exposure has been slashed in half over the last decade.

Despite the decrease in cases since 1990, 12,000 children are still treated in emergency rooms annually for accidental consumption of household cleaners, most commonly located in spray bottles.

Because they are so easy to use, spray cleaners are the most popular on the market. While they come with lockable caps, they are easy to open for most toddlers and young children, and because of the similarity to sports drinks in appearance, they are dangerous temptations.

Almost all cases (72%) are for very young children between the ages of 1 and 3, who are able to reach products left out, and less likely to understand what they are.

It was also mentioned that abrasive powder cleaners can look similar to Parmesan cheese, and also attribute to a certain amount of poisonings each year.

Several tips have been given by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help avoid accidental consumption. They suggest parents keep all products in their original bottles, lock them in a cabinet that cannot be opened by children, keep them high, and dispose of all leftover products.

You should also take a moment to make sure all bottles are closed and caps locked properly before putting them away. This includes anything outside of the house like weed killers, or anything kept in the garage of yard shed.

Health care reform was once one of the most heavily and passionately debated issues, overtaking the usual political platforms that will hold the traditional public interest. But now, the opposition has slowed down, and there seems to be less unfavorable opinion about the bill passed earlier this year.

Since April, those opposed have declined, with only 35% saying they don’t support it, down from 41% from an earlier Washington Post survey.

Among Republicans the measure is still unpopular, even more so, with a full 69% saying they are “very disapproving’ of the measures being taken to completely overhaul America’s health system.

Independents chose to support the bill in higher numbers, accounting for most of the decline in opposition. In just the last month, they have gone to a 48% favor to 37% disapproval.

Democrats also saw a decline in opposition, though it was never high to begin with. While 19% said they did not support the bill, now 15% say they would still stand up against the reform.

These numbers aren’t surprising. With the continue economic problems leading to more people losing their jobs, and so losing health care, the strain on state funded Medicaid and Medicare is at breaking point.

The costs of medical treatment are as high as ever, and low-cost alternatives, such as small clinics opening up outside of stores, are more common. Clinics are offering flat rates to help people to pay, and there is a general agreement that things are out of control.
The margin of error was a plus or minus 3%, the Kaiser Family Foundation, who ran the poll, said.

The FDA is currently in talks about the option of expanding the availability of gastric bands to fourteen to seventeen year olds. At the moment, you have to be severely obese and over the age of eighteen to qualify for a gastric band. However, some studies show that certain gastric bands can prove to be successful among teenagers who are obese. Studies of gastric bands on teenagers are rare so there is not a lot of information to go by.

There are several concerns surrounding the FDA’s consideration of gastric bands in teenagers. For a start, some people are worried that it could encourage teenagers to eat more and exercise less because they could be under the impression that it doesn’t matter how big they get, the problem can be sorted by a gastric band. The other problem is that teenagers could be at risk of paying for surgery that is not carried out properly because it is cheaper, meaning that the risks are much greater.

As with all decisions regarding the obesity problem among teenagers in some parts of the world, this is something that is going to need careful consideration from the FDA. Of course, there are many pros and cons for each side of the argument, and many people are not going to agree with whatever decision is. It could end up being a very good decision if it goes ahead because it could help combat the obesity problem.

A scientific study into the components making up store receipts found that 40% contain the dangerous chemical bisphenol A (BPA), and they are theorizing that there may be a serious health risk involved in their handling.

BPA has long since been protested, with the last two years showing an increase in watchdog groups working to ban it from canned goods, baby formula, and baby products. They have now been found in the ink used in receipts.

The study, released by the Environmental Working Group, showed that 40% of receipts, which were found at businesses like McDonald’s, Whole Foods, KFC and Walmart, showed a 3% by weight of the chemical.

Another 60% from stores like Target, Starbucks and banks did not contain BPA, underlining the fact that it would be a simple fix for the stores using it to stop.

BPA has been linked in a number of studies to serious health risks in animals, but no studies have so far been done on humans. Some of the consequences of exposure included strange reproductive problems, resistance to chemotherapy, obesity, reproductive cancers, and several other serious problems.

A Swedish study found earlier this year that exposure to skin caused it to leak under the dermis, and into the bloodstream.

There is now some worry that the constant exposure to BPA from workers at these businesses could be a severe risk. The findings are sure to create an increase in the fight against the chemical, and pressure those companies to change their paper use.
