MENTION NUTRITION to most people and they automatically think of vitamins. However, they really ignore the role of minerals. Minerals really deserve better. After all, there are 96 times more minerals, by weight, in a body than vitamins. There could be no life without them and any body cell lacking in a single mineral cannot function properly.

Minerals are present in soil, in water, and even in air, and help minute vitamins to form enzymes. They help transport oxygen into the bloodstream. They are the building materials of strong bones, tissue, teeth, nails and the hair coat.

Minerals are present in the soil, in water and even in air. In minute amounts they are absorbed from the soil by plants. Herbivorous animals eat plants and drink the water and in this way obtain the bulk of their mineral nutrients. Carnivores get their quota through the mineral content of the flesh they eat, the water they drink and the sporadic greens they chew.

 Much more is known about vitamin requirements than about mineral needs. This is true for both humans and animals. That’s because nutritional science only recently has developed the technology with which to study minerals.

Veterinary science has determined that certain minerals are required for animals. For cats, the vital minerals are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron copper and iodine. Chlorine, manganese, zinc, sulfur, cobalt, selenium, molybdenum, fluorine, chromium, silicon and perhaps tin, nickel and vanadium are also assumed to be essential. For dogs, mineral needs include calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, potassium, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, iodine, manganese, zinc, selenium, and perhaps molybdenum, fluorine, tin, silicon, cobalt, nickel, vanadium and chromium.

Such minerals should be included in the minimum standards for the maintenance of adequate health. If a product claims to be “ “complete and balanced”, the suggested serving for an animal must meet all daily minimum requirements.

It is important to keep the word “minimum” in mind at all times. The Required Daily Amount suggestion and “complete and balanced” claims are nothing more than minimal requirements. They are not optimal in any sense. We haven’t evolved so far as food mavens to design the best possible food diet for our animals. Look how poorly we do for our own nutritional needs! At any rate, veterinary science is doing its best, but has a long way to go.

SUPPLEMENTS 

In my practice, I have used both vitamins and mineral supplementation as methods for preventing skin problems and aiding  in therapeutic programs. By far my best success has been with the use of minerals rather than vitamins.

Generally speaking, I do not find allergic skin conditions to be very responsive to vitamins. In fact, I have found supplementation with B – complex vitamins frequently causing the allergy to become worse because yeast is used as the most common commercial sources of natural B vitamins, and yeast is a leading allergen.

Using minerals, I have experienced consistently good results. I believe this may relate to inadequate mineral levels in commercial pet foods. A deficiency of minerals has been involved in at least 10 % of all allergy cases I have treated.

The pet food industry might lack knowledge as to what constitutes good mineral levels for daily animal needs. Also, depletion of minerals in the soil is a problem. According to the 1981 Ford Foundation report on nutrition in America, modern farming methods alone account for much lost nutritional content of food.

“Through intensive farming, poor crop management, increasing use of pesticides, erosion and other abusive factors, the soil in which are crops are raised has been seriously depleted of nutrients,” the report said. 

Such practices rob the food chain of naturally-occurring essential vitamins and minerals. Thus the food you and your animal eat is “short- changed”. Illness, from these deficiencies may be from subtle to catastrophic. 

Over the years, veterinarians have linked deficiency diseases with a wide number of minerals. They include nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iron, chlorine, copper, manganese, zinc, molybdenum, cobalt, iodine and selenium.

Mineral research is a dynamic, rapidly developing science. Sophisticated techniques are being honed to probe the biological roll of so called “trace minerals”, (micronutrients), present in infinitesimal amounts in the environment. These include dozens of lesser-known minerals with such exotic names as yttrium, niobium, ruthenium, tellurium, scandium, osmium, dysprosium, gadolinium and praseodymium.

Any of these unheralded elements could be a vital missing link in deficient soils and may mean the difference good health or disease, even at one part per million or less, which is the level at which these minerals need to be in the food. 

The body’s immune system is a particularly complex network that relies on optimal nutrition for good function. If all the ingredients are not present, the system will not work as well. A shortage of minerals can affect the body’s enzyme systems, that are responsible for countless numbers of biochemical reactions. Allergy or allergy like conditions can occur when either of these systems do not receive proper nutrition. 

Mineral deficiencies may be involved with many common disorders suffered by dogs and cats. I did not reach this conclusion through sophisticated analysis or electronic gadgetry but through the simple medium of supplementing the diets of animals with a trace mineral formula containing all the micronutrients.

Based upon observations involving  approximately 3700 dogs and 900 cats, I found the trace mineral compound added to their food or water for over a six-month period, the skin and hair coat of these animals showed the following;

1. Darker, thicker hair coat, with increased luster.
2. Reduced itching and scratching.
3. Reduced flaky skin.
4. In geriatric dogs and cats, increased activity, weight gain and improved condition
5. Animals with heavy flea and fly infestations appear less attractive to insects after three weeks of supplementation.
6. Plus, improvement in overall general health.

Supplementation with a multiple nutrient of this sort is clearly a “shot gun” approach. Attempting to determine individual deficiencies is not within the realm of a clinician (It is the reserve of the academic researcher). Never the less, the trace mineral approach has been effective alone or in conjunction with other dietary modifications. It also enhances standard therapy while treating many conditions.

In dogs, mineral supplements have been helpful in controlling food allergies, flea-allergy dermatitis, exocrine pancreatic deficiency( digestive enzyme deficiencies), endocrine immune imbalances, chronic active hepatitis and inhalant allergies.  

In cats, it has helped control milliary dermatitis, food allergies, flea allergy dermatitis, chronic active hepatitis, leukemia and feline infectious peritonitis.

In quite a few cases, vitamin supplements, special diets and standard medication did not work satisfactorily until I included TRACE MINERALS.

I have been doing my very best to provide all the valuable information I can about this wonderful product, NutraMin and its tremendous health benefits for both pets and people.

Where we have seen the most profound results have been with all our kids/pets. With so many animals, somebody always seems to be sick. Our vet bills over the years have been absurd & ridiculous. I can honestly say that in the last 2 months, no one has been sick. We have spayed a couple of felines but they we not sick. With this being said, what are some of the specific results we have seen in the 8 weeks of using the product.

Overall, we have clearly seen  shinear, healthier coats. We have had a lot of allergies thru the years demonstrated by leaky, watery eyes but their eyes are clear and bright.

In a couple of specific examples, we have a cat Sammie who we found under our house, several months ago, not moving near death, mucous caked in his nose and covering his eyes. He had a virus that ran rampant thru our pet population at the time. We brought him into the vet who gave him antibiotics. We brought him in the house and we nursed him back to health. He recovered but has always been sickly. Since he has been taking the nutramin he is doing very well, thank you and is much better and is MUCH bigger than his siblings that still live outside. I am sure this is due to the  improved the growth and vitality achieved with the Nutramin.

Another major story is during the winter, one of our feral cats started losing it hair. It lost all its hair and we were very concerned about him making it in the cold weather. We did all we could and he made it into spring. What would we do next winter? How would he survive in the cold with no hair. Since the feral cats have harder conditions, I give them extra nutramin. This is the first week of summer and I am extremely happy to say that his hair is growing back. This is awesome and bodes well for his survival.

We have an indoor cat Jazzmine, who we have had for over 12 years. She has had, for some time, problems with diarrhea and her digestive system. She has been to the vet several time in the last couple of years and they just could not figure out what the problem was or provide any treatment that worked. Our Dr Plechner diagnosed it as Irritable Bowel syndrome. That’s great but what do we do, so we started her on a regimen of nutramin. I am extremely pleased to say that she is doing MUCH better, in fact, she has been PLAYING the last 2 days in a row. We have not seen her play in Years.I think as the weeks and months go by we will get a better perspective on the long range benefits such as in the immune system and longevity but for now, these are NOTICABLE results we have seen for ourselves and we have been very pleased.

One of our biggest fears and challenges is doing everything we can to get our feral population thru the cold winters we experience here. Nutramin with be a major component of our plan for the care of our feral cats this winter.

 As time goes on, I will report whatever we find, good or bad but so far the results have been phenomenal and extremely promising.

We’ve been working very hard to help you keep your pets healthy and safe. The work we do for the Healthy Pet Network has become a passion, for all of us involved. What began as a challenge has developed into a lifestyle and as most real challenges do, it has taken over our days and filled our hearts. No matter how you feel about stem cell research, I am sure that we all agree that there are still many serious medical problems that desperately need to be addressed. Yes, we’ve had our share of ‘amazing advances’ but they have primarily been concerned with treatment of the effects. We have beaten some diseases into remission but we haven’t scored many knock outs. Stem Cell research does offer many potential ‘breakthroughs’. However, the road it travels is filled with so many religious and political potholes it seems like it can’t get out of second gear.

Besides all the controversy regarding the needed research materials (adequate and efficient stem cells), researchers still face numerous problems including stem cell failure. About nine years ago , I was contacted by a physician in Belgium. He was interested in my thoughts on hormone antibody imbalances, and their possible contributions to stem cell failure?

His email outlined the struggles he had been having. It seems that these patients were suffering destruction of certain glandular tissue and he hoped to remedy this with stem cell transplants. However, the results were not promising. The stem cell replacements were being rejected. All of his ministrations had led to failure.

Being driven by the precept that failure for any patient was never an option. The stem cell therapy was put on hold as he looked elsewhere for his answers. He was reexamining the diagnosed origins of the organ damage. He began to suspect that the tissue destruction might be due to a hormone-antibody imbalance.   

Following our email exchanges, he began to test his perspective stem cell patients for the endocrine-immune imbalance syndrome I had discovered. The hormone specific blood test results indicated that these patients all suffered from the (Plechner) syndrome. Their cortisol hormone level was low or defective, and the “total estrogen” level was elevated.

As I’ve mentioned in an earlier article, an elevated level of estrogen not only causes a binding of thyroid hormones, it also causes an imbalance in the immune system, which blocks the immune system’s ability to determine which is body tissue and which is foreign. (Which may be one reason why the patient needed the stem cell transplant in the first place.) If the body’s “defender cells” are attacking it’s own tissue, obviously it will also attack the “foreign” stem cells.

Through the use of a hormonal specific blood test (ENDOCRINE-IMMUNE BLOOD PANEL TEST (EI-1) the physician was able to determine the cortisol and estrogen levels and see, first hand, the imbalance. Once the physician was aware of this imbalance, he followed the Plechner protocol. After he took the necessary steps to balance the immune system, the stem cell transplant worked.

I know that there are readers out there saying, “You’re a Vet! You heal animals. Why would you suggest treatments to a physician?” Although my patients (for the most part) walk on four legs rather than two and are covered by fur, feathers or scales and not denim or micro fibers they still share the wondrous bio systems that we do and are therefore subject to bodily function or dysfunction as the case maybe. What is relevant to animal health is also relevant to human health.

As a researcher myself, I realize that controversial scientific research, especially medical research, should not be dictated to or regulated by religious doctrine or  political punditry. Science and health should rise above individual philosophies or beliefs. If we can eliminate sickness and suffering in the world it is our duty as trained professionals to “discover the cures”.

Even so, it is sometimes the simple truths that lead to medical advancements. Many of the body’s mysteries are answered by examining more closely from within than by just reaching for the latest technological advancement. The first step in solving any medical problem is to make sure everything is working the way it was meant to in the first place.
