How to Stay Young and Healthy

Cleaning the face: One should wash face 5-6 times a day. This helps in cleaning of the dirt accumulated on the face and gives freshness.

Protecting eyesight: Fill your mouth with water, close the eyes and sprinkle water on them about 10-15 times. Gently rub the eyelids and give a tender massage to the eye balls. Staying up late in the night and sleeping after sunrise is harmful for the eyes.

Drinking a glass of water: After this one should take a glass of water. This helps in the smooth passing of stool and urine. Make it a regular habit to drink 10-12 glass of water everyday. Warm water is especially good for regulating elimination and cleansing toxins from the physiology.

Cleaning teeth: The twig of neem or babool should be used for cleaning the teeths.

Gargling: Til oil gargling is good for jaws, depth of voice and good taste for food. By doing this type of gargling one never gets cracked lips, bad odour, sore throat and toothache.

Application of oil: One who applies Til oil on his head regularly does not suffer from headache, baldness or graying of hair. It is also beneficial for applications in nose and ears and makes the skin soft and smooth.

Back pain

Most people have low back pain at some time in their lives. Back pain is responsible for many lost workdays each year. Most acute back pain will go away by itself in a few days or weeks.

Back pain or injury can occur to anyone. It can be caused by stress on the muscles and ligaments that support the back. Jobs that require a lot of sitting or a lot of standing may contribute to back pain. Being overweight puts extra pressure on the back. Strenuous sports like football can injure the back.

The pain can be a mild discomfort that is just a mild ache in the lower back to severe pain that keeps the person from doing anything. Severe pain does not indicate a more serious cause of the pain.

Often, very little needs to be done for back pain to make it better. Many times it will go away without any treatment. Bed rest is not suggested any more, as staying in bed can make the back muscles weaker. If the pain is severe, no more than 1 to 2 days of rest may help. Sometimes, a healthcare provider will suggest using a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for the pain. Aspirin or medicines that have aspirin in them should not be given to anyone younger than 18 years of age. Taking aspirin is a risk for a serious illness called Reye's syndrome. NSAIDs should be taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. NSAIDs should not be taken by anyone who has been diagnosed with asthma, ulcer disease, or a bleeding disorder. Taking NSAIDs increases the risk of bleeding with trauma, dental work, surgery, or if taking blood thinners (anticoagulants).

A cloth-covered ice pack or heating pad on low may be put on the pack to help with the short-term discomfort. The heat or ice should be on the back no longer than 20 minutes 4 to 8 times a day. Doing some mild exercising like walking or swimming may help to relieve the discomfort too.

If there is still pain after resting the back for several days, if it is severe, or comes back, the healthcare provider should be seen. The provider should also be seen for anyone with pain that goes into the legs or if there is numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. If there is loss of control of the bowel or bladder, this is more serious, and the provider should be seen as soon as possible.

Back pain can be avoided. Prevention starts with exercise on a regular basis and maintaining a healthy weight. Lose excess weight by following appropriate habits of diet and exercise. Have a certified fitness trainer customize a workout plan for you.

Learn safe lifting techniques. Bend with the knees and keep the back straight. Choose recreational and exercise activities that help keep the back flexible without putting too much pressure on it. Always warm up and stretch before participating in any vigorous activities.

Since smoking is known to be a factor in back pain, it is wise to quit, if you smoke.

A healthcare provider or a physical therapist can suggest exercises that will help strengthen the back and make it more flexible.

WHAT IS ASTHMA?

Asthma is a respiratory disorder, where the patient suffers form breathing difficulty. The intensity of asthma could vary form mild to severe. If neglected, the attack could prove to be fatal.

Asthma occurs due to the abnormal contraction of bronchial tubes. [Which connect the wind pipe (trachea) to the lungs]. This results in insufficient supply of air and oxygen to the lungs, leading to wheezing & Breathlessness.

WHAT CAUSES ASTHMA?

It could be a natural cause, inherited by parents or an unnatural one, caused due to exposure to allergens like smoke, vehicular and industrial emission, dust, pollen etc. accordingly asthma is classified into Bronchial and Allergic Asthma. However in chronic cases of asthma, lack of oxygen supply to the heart can damage cardiac muscles, known as myo-cardiac infarction, leading to heart attacks. This type is known as Cardiac Asthma.

AYURVEDIC INTERPRETATION

According to Ayurveda, lack of oxygen supply to the lungs, causes water or fluid collection in the lungs, which lodges as phlegm or mucus. This may even spread to the windpipe and bronchial tubes blocking air passage and hence the heavy breathing. This phlegm is called 'kapha' in Ayurveda.

AYURVEDIC THERAPY

Expectorant herbs are used to dispel kapha. Herbs promoting digestion, stimulants and carminatives are used in major anti-kapha therapy.

They are hot, pungent herbs that strengthen Agni, enhance metabolism and circulation, thus accelerating the dissolving action on inert kapha. WHAT IS RHEUMAITSM?
In brief, Rheumatism is described as inflammation of joints, resulting in their swelling and triggering an excruciating pain. Stiffness sets in these joints, leaving them useless. This joint disorder is called Rheumatoid arthritis

WHAT CAUSES RHEUMATISM?Generally, it is an age related problem. The marrow contained inside th3e bones, lubricates the joints, facilitating their smooth movements. With ageing, this bone marrow start5s drying up, thus causing friction in the joints.
This causes inflammation and pain in the joints. In an obese body, the weight bearing joints even wear out. This causes their swelling and stiffness, ultimately crippling the patient’s movements.

AYURVEDIC INTERPRETATION
Accumulated ‘Vata’ [air], blocks the wind carrying channels with the gathered ‘Ama’ or ‘Pitta’ or ‘Kapha’, causing Vata derangement [Margavarodha]. The vata is termed as ‘obstructive vata’. This obstructive vata, with the other toxins like Ama, Pitta or Kapha, accumulates around the joints, applying an immense collective pressure, causing inflammation, swelling and acute pain. Accumulated vata can also cause obesity or anabolic vata.
AYURVEDIC THERAPY
Pungent herbs have the efficacy to clear the obstructive vata. Pungent taste is able to stimulate vata, causing its motion and dispel inert vata. Constipation is a common disturbance of the digestive tract. In this condition, the bowels do not move regularly, or are not completely emptied when they move. This condition is the chief cause of many diseases as it produces toxins which find their way into the bloodstream and are carried to all parts of the body. Appendicitis, rheumatism, arthritis, high blood pressure, cataract., and cancer are only a few of the diseases in which chronic constipation is an important predisposing factor.

Causes of Constipation

Faulty diet and style of living

The most important causes of chronic constipation are a faulty diet and style of living.

Insufficient intake of water, strong tea and coffee etc

Intake of refined and rich foods lacking in vitamins and minerals, insufficient intake of water, consumption of meat in large quantities, excessive use of strong tea and coffee, insufficient chewing, overeating and wrong combination of foods, irregular habits of eating and drinking may all contribute to poor bowel function.

Irregular habit of defecation, lack of physical activity

Other causes include faulty and irregular habit of defecation, frequent use of purgatives, weakness of abdominal muscles due to sedentary habits, lack of physical activity, and emotional stress and strain.

Home Remedies for Constipation

Constipation treatment using Bael Fruit

Generally all fruits, except banana and jack fruit, are beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Certain fruits are, however, more effective. Bael fruit is regarded as the best of all laxatives. It cleans and tones up the intestines. Its regular use for two or three months throws out even the old accumulated faecal matter. It should be preferably taken in its original form and before dinner. About sixty grams of the fruit are sufficient for an adult.

Constipation treatment using Pear

Pears are beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Patients suffering from chronic constipation should adopt an exclusive diet of this fruit or it's juice for a few days, but in ordinary cases, a medium-sized pear taken after dinner or with breakfast will have the desired effect.

Constipation treatment using Guava

Guava is another effective remedy for constipation. When eaten with seeds, it provides roughage to the diet and helps in the normal evacuation of the bowels. One or two guavas should be taken everyday.

Constipation treatment using Grapes

Grapes have proved very beneficial in overcoming constipation. The combination of the properties of the cellulose, sugar, and organic acid in grapes make them a laxative food. Their field of action is not limited to clearing the bowels only. They also tone up the stomach and intestines and relieve the most chronic constipation. One should take at least 350 gm of this fruit daily to achieve the desired results. When fresh grapes are not available, raisins, soaked in water, can be used. Raisins should be soaked for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This will make them swell to the original size of the grapes. They should be eaten early in the morning, along with the water in which they have been soaked.

Constipation treatment using Orange

Orange is also beneficial in the treatment of constipation. Taking one or two oranges at bedtime and again on rising in the morning is an excellent way of stimulating the bowels. The general stimulating influence of orange juice excites peristaltic activity and helps prevent the accumulation of food residue in the colon.

Constipation treatment using Papaya and Figs

Other fruits specific for constipation are papaya and figs. Half a medium-sized papaya should be eaten at breakfast for it to act as a laxative. Both fresh and dry figs have a laxative effect. Four or five dry figs should be soaked overnight in a little water and eaten in the morning.

Constipation treatment using Spinach

Among the vegetables, spinach has been considered to be the most vital food for the entire digestive tract from time immemorial. Raw spinach contains the finest organic material for the cleansing, reconstruction, and regeneration of the intestinal tract. Raw spinach juice-100 ml, mixed with an equal quantity of water and taken twice daily, will cure the most aggravated cases of constipation within a few days.

Constipation treatment using Other Remedies

Half a lime, squeezed is a glass of hot water, with half a teaspoon of salt is also an effective remedy for constipation. Drinking water which has been kept overnight in a copper vessel, first thing in the morning, brings good results. Linseed (alse) is extremely useful in difficult cases of constipation. A teaspoon of linseed swallowed with water before each meal provides both roughage and lubrication.

Constipation diet

Natural and simple diet consisting of unrefined foods

The most important factor in curing constipation is a natural and simple diet. This should consist of unrefined foods such as wholegrain cereals, bran, honey, lentils, green and leafy vegetables, fresh and dry fruits, and milk products in the form of butter, clarified butter, and cream. The diet alone is not enough.

Chew food properly, Avoid hurried meals and irregular meals

Food should be properly chewed. Hurried meals and meals at odd times should be avoided. Sugar and sugary foods should be strictly avoided. Foods which constipate are all products made of white flour, rice, bread, pulses, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, fleshy foods, preserves, white sugar, and hard-boiled eggs.

Other Constipation treatments

Fresh air, outdoor games and exercise

Toning up the muscles also helps in the treatment of constipation. Fresh air, outdoor games, walking, swimming, and exercise play an important role in strengthening the muscles, and thereby preventing constipation.

Q.What is Safe Period?

Ans. If a woman is having a 28 day cycle, she would ovulate on the day 14, So she should not do sex with her partner from the day 9 to day 18. Remaining days are considered as safe period. But this method is not 100% safe. It is highly recommended to take precaution. For irregular periods, it is difficult to expect the time for ovulation.

Cervical Cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer related deaths amongst women in India (more thatn breast cancer). Every year, India loses 74000 women to Cervical Cancer.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical Cancer is a Cancer of the Cervix.

The Cervix is located at the entrance of the uterus and prevents infections from reaching the uterus.

How does one get Cervical Cancer?

This is not hereditary.

Cervical cancer is caused by infection with a virus – the Humar Papillomavirus(HPV) – which infects the Cervix.

The virus is common and is transmitted through contact of the genital area. Preventing this infection Is now possible through Vaccination!

Who is likely to get Cervical Cancer?

Younger women are the highest risk of acquiring an HPV infection that might lead to Cervical Cancer in the future. However, every woman is at risk of Cervical Cancer, regardless of her age. That is why, it is best to protect girls as early as possible.

How is Cervical Cancer detected?

Cervical cancer generally shows no symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage.

Pap smear tests can only detect the early stages of Cervical Cancer. Remember, Pap Smears can only detct an HPV infection after it has happened; it cannot prevent the infection from happening in the first place.

Good News!

Cervical Cancer can now be prevented.

Vaccination can now prevent Cervical Cancer long before it happens. Vaccination works by making the body produce antibodies against the virus. These antibodies protect the body from an HPV infection, by fighting the virus when it attacks the cervix.

By protecting the cervix from an HPV infection, Vaccination offers protection against Cervical Cancer.

Who should take the Vaccination?

The Vaccine is best given as early as possible in adolescent girls as this is when the best immune response to the Vaccine is achieved.

However, since all women remain at risk of Cervical Cancer, ask your doctor if the Vaccination is suitable for you too.

How is the Vaccine given? Is it safe?

The Vaccine is given in 3 doses/injections over a period of 6months. The vaccine is safe and well-tolerated. Like with other vaccines, mile reactions such as slight fever or swelling may be seen after this Vaccination.
