Words by Jacob Zlomke

With Sincerely, Dorothy, Lincoln folk-duo Dear Herman issues something of a critical challenge.

It’s an 11-track narrative wherein characters are inseparable from the music that brings them to life. To listen only to the album’s music would be to somehow resist getting swept up in Crystal Davy’s rich characterization. Further, as developed in tandem with a full-scale theatrical production of that narrative, performed January 17 and 18 at the Haymarket Theatre in Lincoln, the task of looking at Sincerely, Dorothy on strictly its musical merits becomes even more convoluted.

Davy and sister/bandmate Melissa Taylor are students of Allison Krauss and Emmylou Harris, developing an active woman narrator who tells her story through close harmonies and rich acoustic guitars. Where musically, Dear Herman takes cues from classic country, Davy’s knack for lyricism paints an ensemble of characters that in turn inhabit a vibrant and believable community and brings William Faulkner to mind before Patsy Cline or Hank Williams.

Dorothy Mains, the title character and narrator, has inside a year left to live. Her son and husband have become estranged after a fight. Dorothy begins writing letters to her son’s wife Annabel in an effort to restore family relationships as her final act of life. Each track on the album is framed as a different letter to Annabel, and each title named for the character whose story Dorothy has chosen to tell.

Somewhere near the end of the album’s first half, it’s clear that reuniting father and son may not be Dorothy’s only, or even primary, goal. Rather, these letters are an effort in tradition and preservation, a way for somebody, anybody, to remember the people that have been instrumental in the life of Dorothy and her family. Why else the digressions, the excess of personal detail?

For Dorothy, it’s urgent that she get these people down on paper before they all slowly fade away with nothing to show for their existence. Someone needs to know that Mrs. Julienne prays every day for Dorothy and that the Ramirez family has been crucial in helping her daughter deal with Dorothy’s illness. These are small, everyday people in an unknown coastal town that will someday sooner than later be swallowed by the Pacific, probably forgotten. But for Dorothy, there is none more important, nothing more worth preserving, even if only in unsolicited letters.

Jacob Zlomke is a Hear Nebraska contributor. Transmedia gets him real excited. Reach him at jacobz@hearnebraska.org.

Expressing yourself, confessional songwriting and art reflecting self. Jake Bellows has a two-word retort: “Who cares?”

The longtime Omaha songwriter and former frontman of the now-defunct band Neva Dinova contradicts an entire dictionary of the romantic songwriting terminology with his first solo album New Ocean. Released on Saddle Creek in August 2013, the album postulates using music and art as tools for projecting a healthier, brighter future for humankind and the world, as opposed to a force that propagates one person’s human experience.

While the conclusion may seem obvious to Bellows, he knows the execution of such songwriting is uncommon.

“I think every artist thinks that, too,” he says. “They just haven’t considered what their art is for.”

When Bellows returned to Nebraska in mid-January for a pair of solo performances, he reflected on the broader themes of New Ocean, a record for which his primary influences weren’t musical contemporaries of Neva Dinova but rather diverse thinkers like Nikola Tesla, Joseph Campbell and Hazrat Inayat Khan. For inspiration, Bellows (who now resides in California) dove into theories and principles of frequency that give the sleepy pop album its elemental feeling — that the soundwaves we’re processing are, at various frequency levels, the building blocks of the universe.

For this, the ninth installment of Sessions, I sat down with Bellows at the Aromas coffee shop in Benson to discuss visions of a humane apocalypse, the value of artistic voices in society and a moment Bellows could have sworn he was dying.

Chance Solem-Pfeifer is Hear Nebraska’s staff writer. In a story of many quotable quotes, he thinks, “We just have to keep in mind that we made all of this up…” is one to live by. Reach Chance at chancesp@hearnebraska.org.

      <title>Universe Contest at Vega | Audio Review</title>

New Year’s Eve at Vega was the fifth time I’d been to a Universe Contest show in 2013.

It’s a riot each time, with the vim undiminished by repetition. But in that it’s now a well-known hysteria, sometime after midnight, the mass of people, washed in green- and blue-lit baths, become an object of fascination as well.

On this night, Universe Contest begins their set just after 11:30, so they can usher the crowd through the midnight countdown and play until around 1 a.m. The towering scaffold lighting they introduced at their Lincoln Calling set is in full effect and the October addition of dancers in tight clothing and strange masks was ramped up, too, with New Year’s Eve’s participation of the Resplendent Jezebel Burlesque.

Once the band has doffed their sparkling tuxedo jackets and the burlesque dancers (men and women alike) are doing a racy version of “the monkey” from the tabletops behind us, I ask my friend if he thinks the band has anything to say about sexuality in their performances.

He laughs and shakes his head. It’s totally possible he didn’t want to talk about what a rock band means at 12:30 in the morning with balloons raining down on us, and I don’t blame him.

And maybe he’s right, Universe Contest might not have any clarified stance to put forward in their lyrics or their stage presence about sexuality or individuality. In the last two years they’ve acted out a costume-store version of their song “Someone Else,” dressing as Santas, robots, wolfmen and glitter queens — seemingly whichever way the wind blows their carnival tastes.

So I watch the sold-out crowd of people spring to life when they hear the familiar haunted funk groove of “Relephants.” They give themselves with literal open arms to be baptized by the shrill cries of “Dying.” And in what’s invariably the most voluminous sing-along of a Universe Contest set, they echo the hidden, depressive moods of “Snake Stand.” Beneath the bouncy chords of that song is a message about the quiet despair in which streamers are to be swept off the dancefloor later that night. And for the song’s five minutes, the band and its fans share a congregational laugh about the thought of the approaching morning.

Even given the mosh that congeals at these shows, step back and watch. It’s 100 people dancing with themselves, inducing their bodies into widely-drawn circles. Following the band’s lead, they chant vowel sounds. To a total stranger, it must look like something primal, tribal even.

Outside of those mainstay songs, Universe Contest music could be about galactic transport, it could be cleverly titled like “The Day The Earth Took Pills,” or it might not even be English. But these hairy men routinely pack a room full of people anxious to throttle themselves, and then watch the room submit to a communal moment. This moment immortalizes all the salty smells and moshing bruises of a local legend people will want to write about in 15 years. Someone will compile an oral history about the anonymous woman in the gas mask or bassist Jon Dell’s assless chaps or the first time a big crowd saw Universe Contest play at Lincoln Exposed in 2012 and some loner screamed “Zeppelin!” into your deaf ear.

Part of that legend may look foolish or rowdy. It may look like beer cans hitting fretboards or guitarist Tim Carr calling the crowd “motherfuckers” three or four different times, each time handcuffed to an apologetic “we love you.”

But it’s not artifice, it’s not neediness. This is not dance-pop that begs you to please let your inhibitions go just for tonight like it’s your last night on earth. Universe Contest would never ask something so fatalistic or so imaginary of its fans.

This fall, what their shows reflected is that the glow from this mammoth light rig was the band’s internal vision of itself. That the “bearded” woman gyrating behind the drumkit is part of the show they imagine in their sleep.

This fall, what their shows reflected is that the glow from this mammoth light rig was the band’s internal vision of itself. That the “bearded” woman gyrating behind the drumkit is part of the show they imagine in their sleep.

So, yes, Universe Contest has something to say. About shamelessness, about Lincoln, about us and our desire to clamor to the cult of a band that builds an amusement park on stage a few times a year and always seems to giggle once they realize how colorful, how excessive it’s become.

Even if it’s just a shriek in the dark winter of a so-called college town in the middle of nowhere, every time we go to a Universe Contest show and behave like we mean to forget ourselves, it’s more about remembering.

About shaking fists and feet like a bunch of possessed children before somebody long ago told us we had to enunciate, to wear clothes, that there was nothing to see here.</description>

Doug Van Sloun remembers the oddity of being on the phone with a potential client.

The out-of-state artist was asking Van Sloun to master his next record. Only the musician had no idea that the Omaha-based mastering engineer was currently treating the album of the band with whom he was currently on tour. The bands were from different cities and neither was Omaha.

“There was no connection at all between the three groups of us,” Van Sloun says. “That sort of stuff happens more frequently than one might think.”

Coincidence, maybe. But Van Sloun is working on those odds all the time. The clients page on his website details more than a hundred artists, and it’s not even an exhaustive list of all the people who have trusted Van Sloun’s expertise on their albums the last 10 years.

It’s not an exaggeration to say you’ll find the words “mastered by Doug Van Sloun” in the liner notes of the majority of well-produced Nebraska albums. From the bulk of Saddle Creek releases to nationally recognized artists like Damien Jurado and She &amp; Him to Hear Nebraska’s forthcoming compilation — Hear Nebraska: Vol. 2 — Van Sloun’s ears and his state-of-the-art listening room at Focus Mastering have grown to become a hotter and hotter commodity since he moved there in 2005.

You can hear Van Sloun’s work firsthand after the release of Hear Nebraska Vol. 2 at The Waiting Room on Dec. 27. Featured artists Simon Joyner, Conchance and Universe Contest will perform. Pre-order the record on vinyl, and RSVP here.

For this the eighth installment of Sessions, I sat down with Doug Van Sloun in his west Omaha mastering studio to chat about his unique reputation among Nebraska musicians, what happens when a band asks him to move mountains and measuring perfection on a sliding scale. </itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The concept is simple: One artist talks about one song that changed him or her. For the inaugural "Under the Influence," the new podcast from Hear Nebraska created and hosted by Dan Scheuerman, Dustin Wong discusses Terry Riley's "A Rainbow in Curved Air."

Wong, the Chinese-American guitar and pedal virtuoso who cut his teeth in Baltimore and now lives in Japan, is on tour with the Japanese singer Takako Minekawa, playing songs from their collaborative album, Toropical Circle. They play at the Zoo Bar in Lincoln on Thursday.

Scheuerman caught up with Wong on the phone, as he was riding north on the Pacific Coast Highway, driving from southern California to Portland. The wind and road noise you hear is the sound of a scenic coastal view.

Cut it some slack, and enjoy Wong's thoughts on Terry Riley's "A Rainbow in Curved Air."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Interview by Chance Solem-Pfeifer | photo by Daniel Muller

On the opening track of Adult Film, Tim Kasher sings, “When … great, great grandkids are doing acid, they’ll give two shits about all this insipid brilliance.”

When I turn the prism of his biting lyric about the Great American Novel back on Kasher’s new record, the Omaha songwriter and bandleader is modestly clear. Those acid-dropping grandkids won’t care about his insipid brilliance either.

“Yeah, no, I don’t think so. I really don’t,” he laughs, imagining what people in four generations might say of his 2013 release.

Poking fun about the pretentions of storytelling is one of the few themes running through Adult Film, one of Kasher’s rare non-concept albums across his work with Cursive, The Good Life and his solo material.

Adult Film, out today on Saddle Creek Records, demonstrates a version of Kasher’s music with renewed rock ‘n’ roll clarity and lyrics that run the gauntlet of the dark drama and incisive wit that have come to define his career as a songwriter.

For this, the seventh installment of Sessions, I spoke to Kasher offstage at The Waiting Room Lounge prior to his performance on Saturday, October 5. Before performing many of Adult Film tracks for the first time, Kasher sat down to discuss the new album’s place in his discography, why Woody Allen is could be helpful reference point for his writing and whether or not there’s such a thing as the Great Nigerian Novel.</itunes:summary>

<title>Hear Nebraska Sessions: Simon Joyner (Episode 6)</title>

There is a version of Omaha music history that says Simon Joyner started a movement of singer-songwriters, but reaped none of the rewards.

It’s a whispered narrative that says maybe his folk music was a shade too dissonant or experimental to capture a large national audience. Or that he laid earnest, musical groundwork for the Saddle Creek boom, but missed the elevator to the top by playing the field when it came to record labels.

Only Joyner has never bought into those secondhand accounts. He disagrees with the premise that he was some kind of flashpoint for Saddle Creek bands such as Cursive and Bright Eyes, and he doesn’t view himself as the prototypical Omaha singer/songwriter of the early 1990s. The version of events that says Joyner missed out on high-profile tours and record deals presupposes that the songsmith ever chased those spoils in the first place.

Releasing 13 studio albums, founding two of his own record labels, occasionally touring the world and raising a family all while living in Omaha doesn’t make Joyner a “foot shooter.” Maybe, he says, he was just aiming somewhere different the entire time.

“For other people, it’s somehow a shame that I’m not more well-known or whatever. But I don’t feel that way. There’s no wrongs to be corrected,” Joyner says. “I feel like the music speaks for itself. Regardless of how many people have heard it, I feel like what I’ve done artistically is its own thing, regardless of where it took me.”

In the last two years, it’s taken him to previously unexplored heights of collaboration. Where Joyner was once such a deeply private songwriter that he would work only with carefully directed freelancers, his most recent album Ghosts marked his first experience working with a full band, The Ghosts.

And in July, Joyner released New Secrets with his one-time collaborator (from the 2003 LP Stranger Blues) Dennis Callaci. It’s an album that celebrates the pair’s long-rooted underground history. Best known for his work in the band Refrigerator and for founding Shrimper Records, Callaci, like Joyner, has remained a lo-fi, independent artist for two decades by defined and deliberate choice.

Joyner will perform Wednesday night at O’Leaver’s Pub with Orenda Fink, Circuit des Yeux and Spires that in the Sunset Rise.

For the sixth installment of Sessions, Joyner and I met up at The French Bulldog in Dundee to discuss why there’s a Shrimper Records inside every songwriter, how he shed his boyhood Southern drawl and why writing songs about touring is akin to artistic death.</itunes:summary>

<title>Hear Nebraska Sessions: Thomas Wilkins (Episode 5)</title>

As generous and humble with his life story as Thomas Wilkins is, there are moments when you might forget the circles in which the maestro travels.

About an hour into our interview, I asked the Omaha Symphony director how often he thinks about the racial component of the accolades that have seen him featured in the LA Times and Boston Globe.

Rarely, he says. But that being a black man at the highest echelon of a white-dominated industry is something he’s repeatedly discussed with a good friend named Branford Marsalis. Then Thomas excuses himself from the room for the moment.

When he returns, he offers a courteous smile. “Where were we?”

“You were talking about your friend Branford Marsalis.”

Wilkins is the sort of person who, as he puts it, when he wants a bologna sandwich, he wants a bologna sandwich. But as an artist, he’s accrued the level of national and international notoriety that lead to polite debates with Marsalis about the state of racial equity in classical music. It’s a contrast of lifestyles, to be sure, but not a contradiction. After the interview, for instance, it’s Wilkins’ turn to cook dinner at home, and the next day he will direct in a show with actress and singer Katharine McPhee.

On Sept. 20, a stroke of Wilkins’ baton will signal the beginning of the Omaha Symphony season with Brahms and Sibelius, as well as his ninth year as the director of the orchestra. Omaha is Wilkins’ full-time post even though he spends summers as the principal guest conductor for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and often travels to Boston to feed his passion for music education outreach as the youth and family concerts conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

For the fifth installment of Sessions, I met with Wilkins in downtown Omaha’s symphony offices to discuss the importance of understanding music’s cultural context, his beloved collection of scores and why “grace” is the key word for any member of a Thomas Wilkins-led orchestra.

When Michael Todd and I first heard the songs from "Everything Happens For The First Time," they were still growing, clawing and maturing into the spaciness of Eli Mardock’s debut solo record.

Mardock stopped by the KRNU studios in the spring of 2011 to play acoustic versions of “King of the Crickets,” “Hold On” and “Algebra and the Moon.” Even then, Mardock was clear that the demos were much different than his guitar fingerpicking let on. They’d been changing ever since their creation. Some of the songs even predated the breakup of Mardock’s old band, Eagle Seagull, in 2010.

"Everything Happens For the First Time" comes of the heels of two solo EPs from Mardock — "Hamburg" and "NE Sorrow Is Born" — in the last year. The full-length was released physically on July 20 and became available digitally on Paper Garden Records on Aug. 6.

With predominant synth tones and fluid soundstages, "Everything Happens For The First Time" straddles an intriguing line between hazy trance music and the snappy pop sensibilities that define the title track and rope the listener into well-timed choruses.</itunes:summary>

There are 10 people staying in the motel in Jeremy Holan’s head. Each one is more confused, downtrodden and guilty than the last.

But set to music — haunting rock, country western spoken word and barroom balladeering — they become almost attractive. Not for emulation’s sake, but for observation.

The 10 voices that articulate the new full-length from Omaha’s Travelling Mercies are the kind of people whose harrowing road stories you’d listen to out of dark fascination. And apparently people are fascinated with Travelling Mercies, enough to contribute more than $4,000 to the new concept record via Kickstarter.

Travelling Mercies’ Holan, John Klemmensen (drums), Vern Fergesen (bass), Colin Charles Duckworth III (lead guitar) and Edward Spencer (harp) will release their second full-length album Saturday night at The Waiting Room. Saturday’s concert also marks the release of a new album from Omaha’s The Decatures.

Listen here for in-depth examination of "Motel" from HN’s managing editor Michael Todd and staff writer Chance Solem-Pfeifer. There’s talk of No Country For Old Men, singing in dialect and why artists who write concept records shouldn’t be afraid of those two words.</itunes:summary>

      <title>OK Party Comedy's Ian Douglas Terry | Sessions</title>

When a man approached Omaha comedian Ian Douglas Terry after a bit about how much he hates horses, Terry thought he was in for a scolding.

“I was like, ‘Great, is this gonna be big horse fan?’” Terry recalls worrying.

Quite the contrary. The man praised Terry’s routine — in all its oddity — for transposing onto horses the hatred lesser comedians might direct toward women or the LGBT community: simultaneously fostering originality and pointing out the absurdity of hate comedy.

At the source of Terry’s alternative material is a punk rock credo banning homophobia, racism and misogyny, learned from the musical community where the comedian began performing in high school. Then partner that social principle with the DIY mentality Terry adopted while playing in punk bands in his hometown of Columbus, Neb., and later in Omaha punk outfit Renford Rejects. When Terry co-founded the OK Party Comedy collective three years ago, he carried those lessons with him.

“When we started OK Party, it was no one is going to give us anything, no one is going to give us opportunities. Let’s do it ourselves,” Terry says. “And I think that’s the way everything should be. Instead of waiting for somebody to notice you or to give you something, you just do it.”

Since 2010, OK Party has positioned itself at the helm of alternative comedy in Omaha, hosting stand-up Battle Royales at venues like The Waiting Room and Slowdown and attracting nationally renowned voices like Judah Friedlander, Rob Delaney and Doug Benson with the promise of a positive and uniquely Omaha experience.

“(As a touring comic) it’s between going to place get a paycheck and going to do a show to have fun,” he says. “And also get paid.”

In June, Terry released his debut comedy album …and out comes the ghost horse. The album represents a buffet of some of Terry’s favorite stand-up topics, including professional wrestling and the late actor Patrick Swayze.

OK Party Comedy will be prominently featured as part of Omaha Comedy Week, which begins tonight at Slowdown. On Saturday, Terry and company will bring comedian Rory Scovel to The Waiting Room. See the full schedule of events below.

For the fourth installment of Sessions, Terry and I met up in the smoking patio of The Sydney on Fourth of July weekend to discuss his ultimate aspirations for OK Party Comedy, how he deals with the haters and why he still can’t write real jokes.</itunes:summary>

From up on high to the streets of their hometown, the lyrics and music video of AZP’s newest single, “Charge,” bite off a lot.

But it’s nothing Ishma Valenti and Zachary Watkins — the creative duo behind the Lincoln band — haven’t set out to chew.

The video plays host to themes of suffering and redemption on a divine scale, an anti-bullying message and a portrait of violence in Lincoln neighborhoods. It’s a fusion of open eyes to social strife with melodic and danceable music that’s shaped AZP’s developing vision for itself since Valenti and Watkins first crossed paths more than 10 years ago.

The duo maintains they’ve clawed and maneuvered to avoid any kind of “box” for their artwork, going so far as to have once had “Productions” attached to their name, symbolizing an ongoing interest in film media and collaborating with visual artists. At times, AZP has even eschewed the word “band” altogether, in favor of “songwriting team” or “music production collective.”

Deliberate eclecticness holds for AZP’s sound, as well. The band is likely most recognizable for its combination of gospel-rock piano, soul vocals, rap lyrics and a backing rock band. Despite the mantra expressed in their 2012 song, “Keep It Simple,” (officially from Valenti’s album Respect) characterizing the band is anything but.

With their forthcoming EP, Early Sunday Morning, AZP’s message has shifted toward increased clarity, spiritualism and stirring representations of power and power reclamation.

“It’s that power inside of you: not power over people, but power from within,” says Valenti of the internal call-to-arms expressed on the EP and its lead single.

The cover image of Early Sunday Morning is an evocative rendering of black Jesus with his mouth agape and a crown of thorns atop his head. That same visage is matted, 8 feet tall and in color, propped against the west wall of AZP’s Parrish Project studio space in downtown Lincoln.

“It’s not to throw out Christianity,” Watkins says. “It’s our representation of a higher power. (His pain) is a not a representation of physical pain, but pain as in, ‘We need to do better.’ That’s what I get from it.”

On Tuesday night, AZP will release Early Sunday Morning at Duffy’s Tavern with More Machine Now Than Man.

      <itunes:summary>*story by Chance Solem-Pfeifer*

Mike Fratt is an Omaha music Swiss Army knife.

One-third musician, one-third broadcaster and one-third record merchant, Fratt has been a triple threat in and around the Omaha scene for nearly 30 years.

In the ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s, Fratt worked his way through a half dozen bands, including Hanna’s Porch, Acorns, Compost, Goodbye Sunday and Midwest Dilemma. And while Fratt and his bass are well-traveled within Omaha, he’s currently taking time away from live performance, cultivating his love of bluegrass music — which he compares to “acoustic jazz” — and waiting for the right band in that genre to pop up nearby.

Fratt made a few local headlines recently for leaving his 10-year post at the “Sunday Morning” show on 89.7 The River, showing his willingness to retract from the spotlight when he feels it no longer serves its purpose or gratifies his creative interests the way it once did.

For the many things he’s moved on from over the years, Fratt has a calm and clear message.

“I felt good about the contribution I made at the station,” Fratt said. “But just like bands and street weeklys, nothing lasts forever and I don’t feel like I have to do that forever. I’m not so obsessed with ‘the Mike Fratt brand’ that I need to have to do something forever.”

As the general manager of Homer’s Music for 10 years, Fratt isn’t shy about saying he’s found his deepest passion. In our interview, it showed the moment we turned to the subject of record sales. Statistics about vinyl resurgence and the details about expiring leases on now-closed Homer’s stores came forth easily as Fratt carefully explained the growth and downsizing of Homer’s during his tenure as general manager.

For this second installment of Sessions, Mike Fratt invited me into his Benson home for an hour-long conversation about bands that fell apart, occasionally having to do Sunday morning radio fresh from the bars and how he explains the continued success of the flagship Homer’s store in downtown Omaha.

<itunes:summary>Mike Semrad has come a long way since his childhood singing act and Michael Jackson impression almost landed him on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson thirty years ago. And the musical partnership between between him and his wife, Kerry, has travelled a great distance as well, since their days of dueting as theater students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Together, the Semrads front The Bottle Tops, a two-year-old bluegrass and rock band based in Lincoln. Before moving back to Lincoln from Chicago — where Mike played in rock and punk bands and Kerry sang with her husband at tribute shows — the Semrads committed to the formation of a band that would showcase their onstage chemistry, but also provide an important kind of catharsis for the busy mother and father. The Bottle Tops played the first official Lincoln show opening for Chuck Ragan at Duffy’s Tavern in Dec. 2011. Their lineup has since grown to feature Mark Wolberg on bass, Mike McCracken on steel guitar and Mike’s brother, Drew Semrad, on lead guitar and fiddle.

The wife and husband call Ragan “probably (their) number one idol” in music, but in their stage presence and harmonies they also pay homage to the likes of Johnny Cash and June Carter. That attention to history is an important part of the Semrads’ musical identities. Mike comes from a proud and storied history of Nebraska musicians that includes his father Mike “Pinky” Semrad Sr., who founded the Nebraska Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and his uncle Dick Allison, who toured with Grand Ole Opry.

This sit-down interview with the Semrads is the first installment of a new Hear Nebraska series called “Sessions,” meant to explore the depth of the stories, passions and personalities that make Nebraska music as eclectic and vibrant as it is.
