Sometimes love makes you do unwarranted things. Case in point being this incident from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. A man disguised as a woman (bride to be precise) reached his girlfriend’s home to meet her. However, his full-proof plan fell apart when the girl’s family got suspicious. He was hounded by the girl’s family and relatives and the video from the unfortunate incident has gone viral in no time.

In the video, the man can be seen dressed as a woman in a red saree, wearing wig, bangles, jewellery and he also applied make-up. The girl was all set to tie the knot and the wedding preparations were on in full swing when the man arrived at her residence to meet her. Initially, the man thought that he could hoodwink his way to the girl’s room, but alas! he got caught in action. According to reports, the man escaped with his two friends before the family could inform the incident to police.

In the clip, the man can be seen dressed in a saree surrounded by people, who appear to be shocked as well as angry. Some also try to remove the veil covering the man’s face to expose him but he can be seen clinging on it in the video.

Thieves With Sweet Tooth

BENGALURU: A gang of miscreants allegedly struck at a restaurant in Bengaluru and decamped with large quantities of cooking oil, gulab jamun and rasgulla.

Santanu Mondal, business manager of Absolute Barbeques, filed a complaint with Mico Layout police on May 28. Mondal told police the restaurant closed on April 24 due to the lockdown and he visited it a month later on May 24. He found some miscreants had broken the glass door and entered the hotel.

“The miscreants took away 12 tins of gulab jamun, 24 tins of rasgulla weighing around 89kg and 530 packets of cooking oil (each packet containing one litre), all worth Rs 89,000,” Mondal claimed. Mico Layout police have taken up a case of burglary.

Indian Voter Gets Dog's photo in his Voter ID card

North Bengal resident Sunil Karmakar received his ‘corrected’ voters ID card on Tuesday. But instead of his own visage, he found himself staring at that of a hairy pooch.

A West Bengal resident was shocked to see a dog’s photo instead of his own on his voter ID card and has decided to file a defamation suit against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

North Bengal resident Sunil Karmakar received his ‘corrected’ voter ID card on Tuesday. But instead of his own visage, he found himself staring at that of a hairy pooch.

“There were some errors in my voter ID card so I had applied for a correction. When the corrected card came, the information was correct, but my photo had been replaced,” the irate 64-year-old voter of Bewa II’s Ramnagar village in Bengal’s Murshidabad said.

Karmakar feels the error was intentional and intended to humiliate him in public. “People who saw my card, mocked it publicly. I will drag the Election Commission of India (ECI) to court,” he said.

A government official involved in correcting voter ID card errors said that the mistake had, indeed, been spotted earlier, but that he had no idea how it remained uncorrected.

“We noticed the dog’s picture after the publication of the draft voters’ list. I rushed to Karmakar’s residence and brought back a picture of the man. But I am clueless as to how the card got printed with the dog’s photo anyway,” he said.

The mistake may have occurred due to the large-scale panic across Bengal over a possible citizenship screening exercise. Over the past few months, more than 0.83 million peoole including 0.24 million new voters from 22 Assembly segments in Murshidabad district, scrambled to apply for fresh voter IDs and rectifications of errors in existing ones. The district administration had cancelled leave for all government employees to ensure an error free voters’ list.

Rajarshi Chakraborty, the block development officer of Farakka, said that the administration will investigate Karmakar’s charge that the error was intentional.

“He will be given a new voter ID card in April. Meanwhile, government employees involved in the process are being asked to show cause,” Chakraborty said.

Alcohol Flows from the Water Taps of Residents

Thrissur: It was supposed to be a normal day for the residents of Solomon’s Avenue Flat near KSRTC bus stand at Chalakudy in Kerala's Thrissur district. But the residents were in for a shock on Monday morning when they opened the taps as the water had a 'spiritual' smell. The residents checked with one another and found that the situation was the same at all the flats in the building.

Speculations on how the booze got mixed with the water in the tank spread. Their search led to a bunch of excise sleuths whose attempt to destroy seized liquor had gone horribly wrong, leading to a strange situation.

The officials now found themselves in a spot over the issue and are struggling to come up with an escape route.

The bar

A bar named Rachana was located near the apartment. Around 6,000 litre liquor was seized from the bar around six years ago. The excise personnel had seized it as it was stored unlawfully.

After the case proceedings, the court gave the go-ahead to destroy the booze. But how to destroy so much liquor? The sleuths got into a huddle and finally came up with a solution. They decided that as the liquor was seized from the bar, it should be disposed of on the same land.

Pit disposal
A huge pit was dug on the bar premises. And each bottle of the seized liquor was uncorked and poured into it. It took a long time to dispose of 6,000 litres in this manner. The task that was started by 2pm was over only by 8pm.

Neighbours' spirit trouble
A well, from which the residents drew water, was located close to the periphery of the bar property. When the liquor was poured into the pit, it seeped through the soil and entered the well on the nearby property and got mixed with the water. This water was pumped into the tank, triggering the trouble.

The excise sleuths rushed to the spot and promised the families that they would resolve the issue. They suggested cleaning the well and supplying drinking water to the families until the well is cleaned.

But the residents refused to withdraw the complaint and sought action against the erring officers.

The residents filed complaints with the Chalakudy municipal secretary and health department, seeking action against the excise officials. A probe has already begun into the issue.

Chalakudy is famous for its obsession with booze. The Kerala State Beverages' outlet here had recorded the highest sale of liquor during Onam and Christmas seasons these past years.

Man's Gut Makes Him Alcoholic

It began as a simple thumb injury. Then, it spiralled into a dangerous syndrome where a man's gut essentially became a brewery fermenting its own endless alcohol supply - which is not as fun as it sounds.

In a recent case study, doctors recount the strange symptoms of auto-brewery syndrome (ABS): a rarely diagnosed medical condition where simply ingesting carbohydrates can be enough to make you wildly inebriated. Even worse, nobody believes you when you say you haven't been drinking.

At least, that was the case for the unfortunate 46-year-old patient in question, an otherwise healthy man who'd only ever been a light social drinker.

His troubles began in 2011, after he completed a course of antibiotics for a thumb injury. Within one week of finishing the meds, he reported experiencing uncharacteristic personality changes, including depression, 'brain fog', aggressive behavior, and memory loss.

He was eventually referred to a psychiatrist and given antidepressants, but it was only when the man was pulled over by police one morning in an apparent case of drunk driving that the true nature of his illness started to reveal itself.

When pulled over, he refused to take a breathalyzer test and was hospitalized, with tests showing he had a blood alcohol level of 200 mg/dL, equivalent to having drunk approximately 10 alcoholic drinks, and sufficient to induce confusion, disorientation, impaired balance, and slurred speech.

"The hospital personnel and police refused to believe him when he repeatedly denied alcohol ingestion," researchers from Richmond University Medical Centre note in their case report.

After being discharged from hospital, he sought treatment at a clinic in Ohio. In medical tests, most of his readings looked normal, but his stool sample showed the presence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (also known as brewer's yeast) and a related fungus.

S. cerevisiae has a long history in beer brewing and wine making (in addition to baking), as it helps ferment carbohydrates and produces alcohol.

While the patient was successfully treated at the clinic, his ABS diagnosis revealed itself in subsequent flare-ups, with the most serious incident involving a fall while inebriated that resulted in intracranial bleeding.

While recovering in hospital, his blood alcohol spiked as high as 400 mg/dL – twice the concentration recorded when he was pulled over – but still "medical staff refused to believe that he did not drink alcohol despite his persistent denials", the researchers write.

Fortunately for the patient, he eventually sought treatment conducted in collaboration with the Richmond University specialists, who used a combination of anti-fungal therapies and probiotics to treat the man's gut microflora.

With the exception of one relapse – brought upon by a pizza and soda binge, unbeknownst to his treating doctors – the patient's fungal growths look to have been successfully treated.

"Approximately 1.5 years later, he remains asymptomatic and has resumed his previous lifestyle, including eating a normal diet while still checking his breath alcohol levels sporadically," the researchers explain.

It's a happy ending for the patient, who looks to be finally free not only of his unasked-for drunkenness (and resultant health problems), but also of the cloud of disbelief it invited in those around him.

"For years, no one believed him," one of the medial team, Fahad Malik, now a chief medical resident at University of Alabama at Birmingham, told New Scientist.

"The police, doctors, nurses and even his family told him he wasn't telling the truth, that he must be a closet-drinker."

As for how the auto-brewing fungus colonized the man's insides, the researchers suspect they started to set up their boutique brewery after the man received his thumb injury in 2011.

"We believe that our patient's symptoms were triggered by exposure to antibiotics, which resulted in a change in his gastrointestinal microbe allowing fungal overgrowth," the authors explain, noting that we are only starting to recognize the complexity of this rare and probably under-diagnosed condition.

Toilet Selfie For Would Be Brides

BHOPAL: This is one pre-wedding photo shoot no one would want to remember. But there's no escaping it in Madhya Pradesh if the bride is to get Rs 51,000 under Mukhya Mantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Scheme.

Application forms for the scheme are accepted only after the bride proves that her would-be husband's house has a toilet.

Since government officials cannot go around checking loos everywhere, they demand a selfie-standing-in-toilet from the groom.

The embarrassment of standing in a toilet and taking a photograph - thankfully not in wedding regalia is not limited to rural areas. In the state capital, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials make the same demand.

"Imagine a marriage certificate, attached with the photograph of the groom in a toilet. I was told that the Qazi will not read the Nikah unless I provide the photograph," said Sameer (name changed), a resident of Bhopal's Jehangirabad. He is one of 74 couples to be wed in mass marriage at Central Library in Bhopal on Thursday.

"The idea of grooms being required to prove they have a toilet before marrying is not a bad thing. The social justice department has not issued any such directive. The implementation of the policy can be better," said J N Kansotiya, principal secretary of department of social justice and disabled welfare.

The toilet clause has been there since launch of scheme in 2013, but the photographs are a recent addition.

"Earlier, there was a relaxation in the policy. Grooms were told to build a toilet within 30 days of marriage. That has been done away with," said BMC official in charge of the CM marriage scheme, C B Mishra.

There is nothing wrong in attaching a photo of the groom in his toilet. It is not part of the wedding card,” said Mishra.

It gets even weirder if the bride lives in another city or district. “There was a marriage in Silwani, some 90km from Bhopal. The local government official did not approve the marriage till the groom (back in Bhopal) provided proof of him standing in a toilet. We understand that toilets are an intrinsic part of Swachh Bharat mission, but the process could be better,” said BMC corporator and local Congress leader Rafiq Qureshi. He has organized three mass marriages this year, and with the civic elections scheduled for 2020, there may be scores more mass weddings — and hundreds more groom-in-the loo photos.

Politicians on both sides admit that grooms are at the receiving end of this cleanup mission, and wish there was a more graceful way of asking grooms to prove they have toilets.

The Mukhya Mantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Scheme is for economically backward sections. On December 18 last year, only a day after coming to power, the Congress government had hiked the financial assistance from Rs28,000 to Rs51,000. It led to flood of applications, making it difficult for officials to assess each house for toilets.

Seven Wives Turn Up to Claim Husband's Body

Police were in for a surprise when seven women, all claiming to be wives of the deceased man, came forward to claim the body of Pawan Kumar, a resident of the Ravidas Basti in Haridwar.

Seven women claiming to be wives of a deceased man have come forward to claim his body, putting the police in Uttarakhand in a spot.

The incident happened in Haridwar after a man committed suicide by consuming poison. All the women said they had no idea about another woman in his life.

The deceased identified as Pawan Kumar was a resident of Ravidas Basti and worked as a driver.

According to a report, the man was cremated after an intense drama by the 'wives' of the man. Initially, there were five women who claimed the body, but later two more women came out claiming they are his wives.

Police said they are still waiting whether some more women come forward to claim the man's body.

Kumar's wife rushed him to a nearby hospital after he consumed poison on Sunday night, but he died during the treatment.

According to police, Pawan led a very low profile life and did not have many friends. And he also faced a financial crisis.

"Police are investigating as to why the man committed suicide. The woman who brought the man to the hospital did not disclose why he consumed poison. We have sent the body for postmortem,"Praveen Singh Koshiyari, SHO City police station was quoted as saying.

The local cops have now decided to wait for a few more days to see if the list if finally complete.

Monsoon Wedding Frogs go Separate Ways

Two months ago, two frogs were married to each other in Indrapuri near the Madhya Pradesh capital to appease the rain god Indra. Now that central state is flooded, the priests who got the amphibians hitched have gotten them divorced.

Quirky rites abound in this country to propitiate the gods for their bounty during monsoon, but a custom to reverse the rains comes as a rarity.

Following disastrous rains in the state in 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday, the residents, whose houses and shops are flooded, decided to split up the newlyweds.

And now that the couple has been pulled apart, the people are hopeful that they would soon be out of the dire situation.

"The marriage of the frogs was conducted on July 19 for good rainfall this season. But now the state is flooding. Therefore, to please Lord Indra, the frogs were made to part ways," said a person from the Om Shakti Shiv Mandal, the body that organised the special ritual of the frogs' divorce, eight weeks after they were married according to Hindu customs.

Madhya Pradesh has seen a heavy toll due to rains, and the state government has doled out Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the 202 people who lost their lives in the deluge across the state, said an official statement on Thursday.

As many as 32 people have been injured while 9,816 houses damaged due to the excessive rainfall in the state, added the statement.

Pregnant Goat Gangraped

Police have booked eight men in a village in Haryana’s Mewat district for raping a goat Wednesday night. The seven-year-old goat was pregnant and died a day after the assault, police said.

Police said the accused are locals and alleged history-sheeters. Three of them were beaten up by villagers in Maroda village about 73 kilometres south of Gurugram after the owner of the goat caught them in the act.

Police have registered a case under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with man, woman or animal” and under the Animal Cruelty Act at Nagina police station in Nuh, earlier known as Mewat. The police are yet to make any arrests but say that the accused would be nabbed soon.

“Our team is investigating the case and has recorded the statement of the goat’s owner, who allegedly caught the three accused in the act. We are also in the process of recording the statements of other eyewitnesses and villagers to know the exact sequence of the crime and arrests will be made once we get all the details,” Nazneen Bhasin, superintendent of police, Nuh, said Sunday morning. Five others are yet to be identified.

The owner, Aslup Khan, said his goat went missing from its shed, located adjacent to his house, on Wednesday night after which he and other villagers started looking for it. “It was around 11pm when I heard some noise and went out. The gate of the shed was open. I panicked and raised an alarm, as four of my goats had been stolen in the past and this was the only one left. While we were looking around, we found three men sexually assaulting my goat,” said 27-year-old Khan, a truck driver.

Khan said they caught hold of them and beat them up, but were let off later as they were in an inebriated state and were regular offenders. He further said that the three men told them about five others who had allegedly raped the goat that night. Bhasin said the three men have a criminal record and were jailed in the past for allegedly stealing motorcycles and cattle.

“My goat was injured and lying on the ground. It was not even able to walk. I took it home and applied medicines on the wounds on its head and nose. It did not eat anything the next day and was lying as if it was paralysed,” Khan said.

Police said one of the accused met Khan the next day and mocked him over the condition of the goat.

“He came to me on Thursday and threatened to steal the goat. He laughed and said that he and his friends had a nice time that night, which made me furious. I thrashed him after which he fled the spot,” Khan said.

The condition of goat started deteriorating and it died around 6pm. That’s when the villagers informed police who reached the village on Thursday night.

“We informed the veterinary surgeon as the post-mortem had to be conducted and booked the men involved in the sexual assault,” Bhasin said.

Dr Ramvir Bhardwaj, veterinary surgeon of animal husbandry posted at Nagina said the goat died of brain haemorrhage. “It was 50 weeks pregnant. During the post-mortem examination, it was found that there was blood in her windpipe. Samples of its vaginal swabs were sent to the forensic science laboratory,” Bhardwaj said.

Wife Stripped Naked on Video Call

Bengaluru: An Ola driver experienced the worst ride of his life on Friday when he accepted a booking from Adugodi to Dommasandra. Four men, who boarded the taxi, took him to an isolated place and robbed him. The unidentified assailants thrashed him multiple times, video-called his wife demanded her to strip and then took screenshots of her.

The incident occurred around 10.20 pm when he received a booking from four customers. Before reaching the destination, the unidentified assailants asked him to drive further past their home. When the cab reached an isolated place, they assaulted him and took away his car keys. The miscreants then tied him up at the back seat of the car and drove to a burial ground at Ramanagara, where the gang assaulted him once again and demanded money, reports India Today.

Bowing to their demand, the driver gave the gang Rs 29,000 in total (Rs 9,000 cash and Rs 20,000 through Paytm).

The report further states that the unidentified miscreants took him to another isolated place, where they asked him to video call his wife. They then demanded the driver's wife to strip but assaulted him again when his wife denied to do so, thereby forcing the woman to strip during the call. The gang then allegedly took screenshots of the video-call.

Not in the mood to let the driver go, the gang later took him to a lodge from where he managed to escape on the pretext of going to the bathroom. The driver then reached Adugodi Police Station and registered a complaint for alleged blackmail, assault and for outraging the modesty of a woman.

Ola, issuing a statement on the matter said, "This is an extremely unfortunate incident and we deeply regret the harrowing experience the driver-partner and his family have allegedly been put through."

"We strongly condemn such acts of assault and have blacklisted the customer’s Ola account immediately on the complaint being registered with us. We are in touch with the driver-partner to extend support to him, and have been assisting the investigating authorities with all necessary information," it added.

In a bizarre case that occurred in Pune, a man dressed up as a woman for seven years just so that he continue his illicit affair with a woman who was his friend's wife. He was caught by her husband.

Khadak police arrested 44-year-old Rajesh Ghisulal Mehta, a small-time developer and resident of Gangadham Chowk in Bibwewadi who visited his friend's house wearing a nightgown to meet the wife so neighbours and security guard don't suspect anything.

This continued for 7 years till one day he got unlucky. On January 4, Mehta, as usual dressed up in woman's clothes not only entered the house but also he attempted to drug the already sleeping husband with a rag soaked in a chloroform- like substance. This time, a half-asleep husband woke up and realised that someone was tapping a smelly cloth near his nose. Scared, he woke up and got into a scuffle with Mehta. In the scuffe, the husband pulled pulled out the dupatta which was covering his face, and realised that the assailant was his friend.

Mehta fled hurling abuses and leaving behind evidence.

According to a report in Times Of India, the husband told police, "Recently, I came to know from our security guard that Mehta often visited our home in my absence. I then found out about the affair between my wife and friend, which had been going on for seven years whenever I was out of town. I warned Mehta never to come back to my house."

In a report in the TOI, The husband narrated his experience, "I woke up early that day and went to the gym with my wife. When we returned, I decided to rest after breakfast. Around 11 am, when I was in deep sleep, a strong odour woke me. Under the impression that I was being robbed, I said, 'Tum kaun ho, yahan kaise aaye, tumhe kya chahiye (who are you, why are you here, what do you want)'. But, he started slapping me and we began to scuffle. I somehow pushed him away and he ran into another bedroom and locked the door from inside. I saw my wife and asked her if she knew who this was, but she denied any knowledge of him. Suddenly, he sprang out and began running downstairs. I grappled with him and he tore my t-shirt. I was stunned to see he was in a night gown around this time. He escaped unmasked, and I saw it was Mehta." He added that Mehta abused him and threatened him with consequences before driving off in his car. The complainant called his nephew soon after, but lost consciousness, probably due to the after effects of being drugged.

The traumatised husband lodged a complaint at Khadak police station three days after the incident, and Mehta was booked under sections 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Investigating officer sub-inspector Sanjay Gaikwad said, "Over the description, we filed an FIR against Mehta and arrested him. We have seized the rag and torn gown as well as the car used during the crime. We will try to find out what chemical was used to make the complainant unconscious. Though the accused reportedly visited the house often in the husband's absence, we are exploring if he had a specific motive on that day, and also looking at whether this modus operandi was used before." Gaikwad also told TOI that they are probing how Mehta gained entry into the house, too.

It could well be a perfect script for a Bollywood romance block buster but for Phoolchand it was sort of a heart break when he performed the marriage and `vidai' of his wife with smiles on his face.

Chanda, a resident of Bikapur village of Faizabad district, had an affair with a youth Suraj of the same village. However, bowing to the wishes of her parents, she married Phoolchand in 2012. Phoolchand, a native of the adjacent village Palipoorab, happily took his bribe to his house.

However, as fate could have it, he had to leave for Jalandhar immediately to earn money. Though the husband wife talked to each other frequently on phone, Chanda's and Suraj's love further blossomed as Suraj used to visit his relative in the Palipoorad village. His relative's house is close to Chanda's house and to ensure a meeting, Chanda used to visit his house on one pretext or the other.

Meanwhile, Phoolchand returned back on August 4 only to get a shocker. Chanda, not only returned the jewelery, clothes and other items that Phoolchand gave her at the time of marriage, but also told her the truth.

"I was happy that she relied on me and told me the truth. I got angry and sad for some time but decided to take out a solution", Phoolchand said.

After discussing the matter with his father, Phoolchand reached Chanda's village along with his father and confronted the village panchayat. "I kept forward my suggestion that Chanda and sooraj whould be allowed to marry and I have no objections", Phoolchand said.

After a long discussion, the Panchayat agreed to Phoolchand's offer and Sooraj and his family were also summoned. Sooraj and his family members agreed with in no time and the marriage was performed at the village's shiv mandir on Thursday.

"This shows the mental level and strength of our youths these days and we salute Phoolchand for this brave step. It is better to accept the truth and act accordingly than to linger on with a forced relationship throughout life", Ravindra Yadav, the village head of Bikapur said.

Besides throwing out a lavish lunch, Phoolchand and his family members also gave gifts to the newly wed at the time of `Vidai' with blessings of a happy married life.

One of the busiest post-mortem centres of Mumbai, with over 2,000 autopsies conducted every year, KEM Hospital continues to use 10 sweepers and an attendant to cut open the bodies, sew them up and handle the internal organs, in blatant violation of all rules

Tune in to any crime series on television, and forensics is a big part of murder mysteries – fancy labs, top-notch equipment and celebrated experts are put to work to get to the bottom of the case.

Closer home, however, the truth is far different, as mid-day found out at KEM Hospital, which relies not on glamorous, highly-qualified experts but on sweepers barely educated past Std IV to carry out intricate post-mortems.

Open-and-shut case
KEM Hospital is the largest tertiary care medical unit in Mumbai, with one of the busiest morgues, conducting over 2,000 autopsies a year. Shockingly, these thousands of cadavers are cut open, their organs handled and then sewn up, all by 10 sweepers and a post-mortem-attendant-cum-sweeper (PMA).

This is in blatant violation of a Bombay High Court recommendation that only trained specialists, and not sweepers – or safai kamgars as they are commonly known - be permitted to perform post-mortem work.

Two years ago, one Sachin Laxman Jadhwar and other sweeper staff of Pune’s Yashvantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (attached to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) placed a petition before the Bombay High Court, complaining that they were forced to undertake a part of the post-mortem work - opening and stitching of the dead bodies - even though this was not part of their official duties.

On October 7, 2013, the HC observed that the minimum qualification required for the post of a safai kamgar was only Std IV-pass. “Obviously, a person holding the said post has no knowledge of basic anatomy.

If such persons are forced to open the dead bodies and again stitch the dead bodies, there is every likelihood that while doing so they may cause damage to the vital parts of the human body, which may amount to destruction of evidence, especially in medico-legal cases,” said the bench headed by A S Oka and Revati Mohite Dere.

Cutting corners
At KEM, which continues to ignore this ruling, not only are the sweepers unqualified for such work, they are not compensated for it adequately. Officially, the hospital’s work manual does not even list post-mortems as a duty for the safai kamgars or the PMAs. In spite of this, they are pushed to do the work due to the lack of technical staff.

They are paid around Rs 8,000 per month, but this only covers their regular duties. Because there are no legal provisions for such a situation, these staffers do not even get proper rights, such as adequate compensation or insurance for the post-mortem duties, despite the obvious risk of infections.

Staffers complained that when they protest, hospital authorities simply point to one convenient clause in the work manual: staffers must do as instructed by seniors. “The rule is common for all employees, but that doesn’t mean that staffers have to do anything and everything.

Especially when Bombay High Court asked a Pune civic hospital to not allow safai kamgars to be a part of the post-mortem process. KEM Hospital’s standard operating procedure doesn’t supersede the High Court’s judgment,” said an employee at KEM.

Another KEM employee said, on the condition of anonymity, that the most discouraging part of the job is the stark imbalance between the risks involved and compensation offered. “We don’t get any insurance cover, being a Class IV employee.

While performing the post-mortems, if we suffer any lacerations which lead to infections, we pay for our own treatment. Then what is the point of carrying out this responsibility when technically it doesn’t even fit in our ambit,” he said.

‘It’s tradition’
When mid-day approached Dr Harish Pathak, the HOD of KEM’s forensic department, he said it would be wrong to say that safai kamgars conduct post-mortems. Instead, a better way to put it would be to say they assist forensic experts.

“We have one Post-mortem Attendant and 10 safai kamgars working as his assistants. The practice of safai kamgars opening the bodies, removing the organs and stitching it up has existed since years, and is followed around the country like an age-old tradition.

Now if we want to change this tradition, we need a government resolution to initiate a gradual transformation towards achieving better quality in the autopsies,” said Pathak.

Training
Pathak emphasised that instead of removing sweepers from the post-mortem process altogether, thereby crippling the field, it would be preferable to give them proper training as mortuary assistants, along with suitable benefits.

“Rather than looking for a revolution in the field by removing safai kamgars from the post-mortem process, a better way is to offer proper compensation and formal training. If any such course is initiated, our department will welcome and look forward to it,” he added.

Hardly cutting edge
In an ideal setup, a morgue would have to have a cutter to handle the bones, a mortuary assistant to make incisions and handle organs and a medical expert (apart from the support staff of sweepers, PMAs, etc).

However, a veteran autopsy expert was of the opinion that it is impossible for any post-mortem centre in the country to run without safai kamgars. “In India, we still use chini and hathodi (anvil and hammer) to break open the skulls and bones, while the rest of the world is far better equipped in the field of forensic science.

A single doctor can’t undertake the amount of work needed to conduct an autopsy; we need experts to assist him,” said the expert, adding, “However, we need a gradual change from the current setup, in which more likely than not, a few inebriated safai kamgars do the work of dissection, etc.”

Kissing By Father-In-Law Leads To Bride Refusal To Marry

KANPUR: A band, baja and baraat went empty handed after the bride refused to marry the bridegroom on moral grounds when her would be father-in-law kissed her cousin.

The incident took place in Farrukhabad district in Kanpur.

The marriage of Ruchi, daughter of Parmeshwari Dayal from Nagla Khairband village in Farrukhabad, was fixed with Rajesh, son of Baburam from Nehru Nagar of Jaithara in Etah.

On the wedding day, the baraat reached Nagla Khairband village. All was well till the time of 'jaimal' ceremony when the bride's cousin Anita (name changed), who had come from Nagla Bhamrasa village of the district, also sharing the stage with her sister, was kissed by the groom's father Baburam even as the bride and her family looked on in deep disapproval.

Piqued at his behaviour, Ruchi refused to marry and ordered the marriage party to return immediately. Sensing seriousness of the situation, Rajesh's father apologised to the girl and her parents publicly. But Ruchi refused to give in. Ruchi's mother, who also rushed from Etah, tried to pacify her but she refused to budge citing moral reasons.

Later, the bridegroom and his father were confined to an enclosure by the girl's side and police were informed. While narrating the incident on phone, bride's cousin Brijesh Kumar said that the wedding party was allowed to return to Etah only after it agreed to return the gifts and reimburse the expenses amounting to Rs 27,900 incurred by the family of the girl on marriage arrangements.

The groom's family returned the gifts and paid the money to the bride's family for the expenses incurred, the police said. "Though police assistance was sought, the matter was resolved mutually by both the sides," said SHO Kotwali RP Yadav.

Druken Groom Makes Bride Leave Him

A girl in a village in Mahoba district stunned members of her family and community when she refused to marry the groom because she found him in an inebriated state just ahead of the wedding ceremony on April 28.

The incident took place late on Tuesday night at Ajnar village of the district when Neha (name changed), daughter of Shripat Ahirwar refused to marry her drunk groom who had to return home humiliated and shattered.

Neha's marriage was to be solemnised with Arvind, a native of Ragauli village under the limits of Harpalpur police station in MP (Madhya Pradesh), on April 28.

Neha, in her early 20s, was decked up in traditional red bridal attire and ready for 'jaimaal' ceremony, but on seeing Arvind drunk and quarelling with her siblings and other guests over DJ music, she refused to marry him and walked away from the venue.

"At the 'mandap', the priest who was getting disturbed while chanting mantras, asked the siblings of the girl to stop playing DJ music. When they stopped the DJ, Arvind and his relatives who were drunk started quarelling with them and created a scene. Neha, who was witness to the entire drama, called off the wedding," informed SHO Rajiv Yadav. Villagers also supported Neha and asked her parents not to force her into marrying a person against her wishes. Sources said that the groom was so drunk that he along with other members of the 'baraat' created ruckus at the wedding venue.

The girl's father and siblings too took a courageous stand and asked the 'baraat' to return. "She found full backing from her parents," family sources said. "She refused to marry the man who was drunk. I did not force her to marry against her wishes," said Shripat Ahirwar, Neha's father. "The marriage party was looking like a party of drunken people. Neha could not tolerate that the boy who is going to be her better half should come in an inebriated state. She could not digest that after taking liquor the groom should utter abusive words to her relatives," said a relative of the girl.

The groom's side later approached the police but was advised not to pursue the case.

"What can police do, if a girl refuses to marry a drunk man," said SHO Yadav.

Sex Shop To Open in Mecca, Sharia Compliant

A "sharia compliant" sex shop is reportedly set to open in Mecca selling halal products and toys.

El Asira, an erotic brand originating in Amsterdam, is branching out to Islam's holiest city in Saudi Arabia, visited by millions of Muslims a year on the "hajj" pilgrimage.

Founder Abdelaziz Aouragh announced his ambition last year but now the shop is almost ready to open, Morocco-based website Alyaoum24 reported.

Muslim clerics and Saudi sheikhs have reportedly been consulted to ensure the business complies with local laws and customs.

"The products we're putting on the market have nothing to do with blow-up dolls or vibrators," Mr Aouragh told the AFP news agency.

"It's not about the sex act, it's what's going on around it. Our products increase the atmosphere and heighten feelings of sensuality."

Women's freedoms are severely restricted in Saudi Arabia and Islamic codes of behaviour and dress are strictly enforced but El Asira says it strives to lead to "more admiration and love for women" by improving marital relationships.

Its website describes all products as "sharia compliant" and claims they can "provide a deeper meaning to sexuality, sensuality and even spirituality".

Everything sold online and in the brand's shops has been deemed "halal", meaning they are permissible according to Islamic law.

"All our products are maintaining the integrity, pure humanity and ethics inherent with the sharia," the website says.

The company, launched in the Netherlands in 2010, specializes in sensual oils and is backed by German adult company Beate Uhse.

Black Mayor Elected Leads to 80% of Police Force Quit

NEW YORK: The election of the first black mayor in a small Missouri town has prompted an exodus of city employees, with 80 per cent of the town's police force resigning before mayor Tyrus Byrd even took office.

The Parma, Missouri city attorney, city clerk and water-treatment supervisor also stepped down before Ms Byrd officially took over the town last week, according to KFVS. Outgoing mayor Randall Ramsey — who was in city government for 37 years — said the officers offered no notice before resigning.

It is not immediately clear why the officers quit the force, but the other administrators said their resignations were a result of "safety concerns". Five of the department's six officers stepped down, including two full-time and three part-time cops.

Residents of Parma told the media that they are not concerned about the loss of the officers, saying the town probably was overstaffed with police.

"I think it was pretty dirty the way they all quit without giving her a chance," resident Martha Miller said. "But I don't think they hurt the town by quitting, because who needs six police for 740 people?"

BJP legislator Heera Lal Verma does not want his 8th standard pass son, Hansraj, to join politics and considers him good for a peon's job, for which he yesterday appeared in an interview at Krishi Upaj Mandi (Rajasthan State Agriculture Marketing Board) in Ajmer.

A two-time MLA from Tonk district, Verma, who was a state government officer before joining politics, said his son being "less educated" was eligible for this kind of job only and he did not want him to enter politics nor do any other "work which is beyond his capabilities or eligibility".

"My son Hansraj works in a private clinic in Niwai and earns Rs 5,000 per month. He was weak in studies and could not clear secondary exam (class X). So this is the only option available to him.

"I will not encourage him to involve in any work or business which is higher than his capabilities or eligibility," the SC category MLA said.

When some of the other MLAs questioned his son's decision to apply for peon's job, Verma told them that "it is unusual but not a sin or anything wrong."

"After all, it is the matter of leading an honest life. I will not encourage my children to use unfair means to lead a 'prosperous' life. He said the interview went well and he would get the job on the basis of his performance only," he said adding that the recruitment process would be transparent.

"I am a post graduate in three subjects and also a gold medalist. I worked as deputy director in social welfare department and I know that getting a government job will make his future secure. He could not continue his studies so this type of job is suitable for him," he said.

Verma's eldest ex-councilor son is a businessman, another has recently graduated and is currently preparing for competitive exams and his daughter is pursuing BEd.

Girl Poisons Mom Twice For Taking Away Iphone

DENVER: Police on Friday arrested a 12-year-old Colorado girl accused of trying to kill her mother twice by poisoning her with bleach for taking away her iPhone, authorities said.

Boulder County Sheriff's Commander Heidi Prentup said in a statement that the mother drank the caustic fluid on one of the two attempts, which both happened within a week this month.

On March 2, the girl poured bleach into a breakfast smoothie that she had prepared for her mother, Prentup said.

"Mom noticed an odor of bleach in the drink and thought her daughter had cleaned the glass prior to making the beverage and did not rinse all the bleach out," the police statement said.

The woman, who was not named by the authorities, was treated at a local hospital and released.

Four days later, the girl allegedly poured bleach into a water carafe her mother kept in her bedroom. When the woman smelt bleach, she became suspicious and confronted her daughter.

"This is when she learned her daughter had developed the plan to kill her for taking away her iPhone," police said.

Prentup said the mother reported the girl to police, and that investigators then gathered enough evidence to take her into custody.

The girl was taken to a juvenile detention facility on Friday where is being held pending the filing of charges.

Man Caught for theft turns out to be Millionaire

A 'petty' thief caught red-handed stealing Rs 1 lakh from the dickey of a motorbike by the police in Katihar, 300km east of Patna, has turned out to be a crorepati!

"Katihar Town police is stunned that Arjun Yadav, the kingpin and a mastermind of a gang of thieves who specialised in stealing from vehicles, even owned a showroom for TVS motorbikes, superintendent of police," Kshatranil Sungh told HT on Saturday.

"He trained thieves to strip luxury cars and motorbikes and steal valuables. The members of the gang would throw a few Rs 10 currency notes near the vehicles to divert attention of drivers or vehicle owners. As they picked the small change, gang members would make away with cash and valuables," Singh said.

Interestingly, nobody in Yadav's neighbourhood in Gerabari village under Korha block, some 30 kms away from Katihar, ever knew that he was a thief.

"He owns a three-storied building located at Teja Tola locality under Town police station, another house at Gerabari in Korha police station area worth crores and his children study in prestigious schools," the SP said.

The thiefs 'social stature's came to light during investigations. Police found that he was a sub-dealer of TVS motorcycle (showroom) and had several bank accounts, besides owning six shops.

"Police has begun the investigation into the case to unearth assets and involve the income-tax department for further probe," the SP added.

According to him, the accused is a active member of robbery gang which is active in the state under the name of ''Korha''-after the place of origin. The group has collected huge physical assets by way of loot and robbery, said Singh, adding that he has asked the Korha circle officer to investigate his investments in realty.

"We had arrested many members of his gang in the past, but Yadav always gave us the slip," said the official.

According to the police, he had never committed any theft in town police station area and that was the reason why locals were unaware of his misdeeds.

Korha is a very backward block of Bihar, with police recording that most households have members who are fully or partially into unlawful activities. The block has a population of 4000 males, many of them into theft , pick-pocketing, looting and robbery. All the thieves of the village are members of a committee that monitors and manages the daily working of the group.

"It is mandatory to send the collected money back to the village committee because it distributes money and goods to thieves and others engaged in similar professions," said an official.

"The committee also hires lawyers to bail the thieves out when they are arrested and charged", the officer said, adding that it also keeps a percentage of the looted money and goods for smooth functioning of the village.

The kingpin of the racket is instrumental in training the children and sending them to metros and small towns across India.

Arrested for killing Dogs for Dog Biryani and Korma

Two Kalina residents were arrested yesterday for allegedly abducting, killing and then eating pet dogs in the locality. According to the local police, the duo may have killed close to a dozen dogs after luring them with biscuits, so they could then feast on ‘dog biryani and korma’.

Lalaronei Inbuon alias Nonou (27) and Mishanbur Chinaupram alias Kho Kho (20), who hail from Manipur, were arrested after a complaint from their neighbour, Santosh Shetty, who had been searching for his missing dog — a Labrador Retriever — since January 13. A witness tipped him off about the duo, saying they had taken the dog away.

After searching for his pet for two days, Shetty approached the Vakola police and registered a complaint, after which the cops apprehended the accused. A police source said the cops soon discovered the dog’s carcass in a trash bin, after they questioned the duo. They also found a few dog leashes and collars in the bin, indicating that the accused had possibly done this before.

On questioning the pair, the police learnt that the two would go out for evening strolls in the neighbor hood and keep an eye out for well-kept, pedigree pets. They would lure the dogs to their home with biscuits and would then brutally butcher the animals. They would allegedly feast on up to 10 kg of dog meat, prepared as ‘dog biryani’ and ‘dog korma’. Cops also found a large steel utensil that the duo allegedly used for these preparations.

Nearly a dozen dogs had gone missing in the past year, and the police suspect the accused were involved in those cases as well, said a source. It is also learnt that when confronted, the two disclosed that dog meat is a common meal in their native place in Manipur.

They were booked under Sections 379 (theft) and 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Watching Cricket Match Kills Boy

NEW DELHI: A man bludgeoned his 10-year-old brother-in-law to death for watching TV at a high volume in west Delhi's Nihal Vihar area on Thursday night.

The accused, Harish Chand, had come to the capital from Bihar for a medical check-up and had been staying with his in-laws since the past five days. The child's parents were, however, not home at the time of the murder.

Police said 30-year-old Chand was sleeping when the child, who was in another room, switched on the TV to watch a cricket match and kept increasing the volume. When 10-year-old Jairam ignored Chand's requests to lower the TV's volume, Chand hit the boy on the head with a grinding stone. On realizing that he had killed his brother-in-law, Chand panicked, locked the house and fled the spot.

When the boy's parents returned home around 11pm and found the house locked, they first assumed Chand had taken the minor out for a walk. However, after failing to reach Chand on his mobile phone, the couple grew suspicious and broke down the door only to find Jairam lying in a pool of blood.

Police are trying to nab the accused who has been absconding since the incident. The victim's body has been sent for a postmortem.

The boy's parents recently moved to the capital and work as laborer's at a factory here. Their elder son died of cancer a few years ago.

Sacking "Attractive" Assistant is Legal

A dentist from Iowa has been found not guilty of sexual discrimination when he sacked his assistant for being attractive.

The Iowa Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the dentist, Dr James Knight, did not engage in unlawful gender discrimination when he fired his assistant Melissa Nelson, as he found her attractive and feared they might have an extramarital affair.

The seven justices, all male, threw out a gender discrimination lawsuit, saying that the dentist’s actions may have been unfair to the longtime female employee, but that his conduct did not amount to sex discrimination, according to C S Monitor.

The assistant was fired after the dentist’s wife concluded that the attractive employee had become a threat to the couple’s marriage.

The jealous spouse demanded the assistant be terminated.

Melissa worked for more than 10 years as a dental assistant for Knight, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The two, who are both married with children, were friendly at work and allegedly began to engage in workplace banter and off-hours texting. Some of their private communications were highly personal and sexual in nature, according to the decision. Dr Knight said he sometimes told Nelson that she was wearing tight-fitting clothing that he found distracting.

At one point, according to a statement in the record made by Knight, Nelson commented about the infrequency of her sex life. The dentist said he responded to her: “That’s like having a Lamborghini in the garage and never driving it.”

Nelson denied ever flirting with the dentist or hinting at an intimate relationship with him. She said her clothing was not too revealing.

In a related development, a province in Indonesia has banned female secretaries. Rusli Habibie, the governor of Gorontalo province, said on Saturday that he had ordered his top staff to replace their female secretaries with men following a string of extra-marital affairs.

LONDON: Gangs of pretty women in Zimbabwe have been raping men to harvest their sperm for use in traditional luck-enhancing 'juju' rituals, according to local media reports.

Local woman, Susan Dhliwayo , claims she pulled her car over recently to pick up a group of male hitchhikers and they refused to get in, as they feared they were going to be raped, the Daily Mail reported.

According to reports, victims of the freeway femme fatales are drugged or subdued at gun or knife-point - one man was even compelled to perform at 'snake-point' when his rapists brandished a live snake. The male victims are then given a sexual stimulant and forced to have sex continually , occasionally unprotected , before being dumped on the side of the road.

In November, three sisters and one of their boyfriends were charged in a Harare court for attacking male hitchhikers and collecting their semen. The Nhokwara sisters were detained when they were involved in a car accident and police found 31 used condoms in the boot of their car.

They face 17 counts of aggravated indecent assault, as a woman raping a man is not a criminal offense in the country . The sisters have claimed that they were merely hardworking prostitutes.

Hinduja College ask Parents to Bring Identity Cards

Charni Road-based KPB Hinduja College asked defaulting students to bring their parents, along with identity proof, to a parent-teacher meet, to curb instances of students hiring actors to pass off as mommy and dad

College students may no longer be able to pass off older friends, lenient relatives, and rented actors as parents when brought to book over low attendance in front of teachers, if the move made by authorities at KPB Hinduja College at Charni Road is any precedent.

On September 21, the college authorities surprised students of second year, junior college, by displaying a notice that asked 51 defaulters to show up with parents who were carrying identity proof, at the parents meet yesterday, failing which they would not be allowed to fill the HSC examination form.

Naturally, the students were all at sea. Suraj Shah (name changed), one of the defaulters, said, "I haven't heard of this happening anywhere else."

Bhavin Mehta (name changed), another defaulter, added, "Even if parents bring identity proof for verification, the college will ask them further questions about the child's personal life to ensure that they are in fact, the real parents."

Parents, however, are positive about the move. Rupal Jha, (name changed) a parent of an SYJC student, said, "It's a good initiative. We don't mind bringing identity proof along."

Smita Parekh, (name changed) another parent, agreed, adding, however, that the identity proof wasn't checked all that thoroughly at the meeting. "We just signed on a muster and left the college. Students who are defaulters usually bring along fake parents."

Dr T.A. Shiware, principal of KPB Hinduja College explained the reason behind the decision. "Students are smart, and believe they can hoodwink college authorities. They hire 'parents' when asked to attend meetings after their names appear on the defaulters' list. This year, we decided to demand ID proof from the parents."
