I'm still in my black x white fix. Can't stop, won't stop. *Diddy bop* Wearing a H&M Plus white tee (So effin' comfy, I swear!), Lane Bryant black sequin pencil skirt (Copped it off their clearance rack for...wait for it...$9.99!) and Pointed black/white Cap Toe Pumps (Currently on sale!), I stopped by the preview party and Q&A session for Tyler Perry x Oprah Winfrey for OWN Network brand new shows: The Haves and Have Nots and Love Thy Neighbor. It was held at B. Smith's. I'm not really a Tyler Perry fan but I decided to give both shows a chance. We were shown just a brief snippet.

Love Thy Neighbor is a situation comedy...about a middle class family and their daily joys, struggles, triumphs and fumbles. The Haves and Have Nots is a television drama...that follows the complicated dynamic between the rich and powerful Cryer Family and the hired help who work in their opulent Savannah, Georgia mansion. I may be leaning a bit towards the The Haves and Have Nots because it has a soap opera feel to it and, just a heads up, I have a special place in my heart for soap operas. The first soap opera I really became invested in was All My Children. I tried Sunset Beach but it was mad wack. Later down the line I stanned the eff out for some Passions. Even bought Tabitha The Witch's book, Hidden Passions: Secrets from the Diaries of Tabitha Lennox. Not. A. Game. (And, yes, I still have the book.)

After the preview, there was a Q&A session featuring Tika Sumpter (The Haves and Have Nots) and Patrice Lovely (Love Thy Neighbor). Even after the marathon session, Tika stayed behind to take pictures with some of the attendees and sign autographs. So nice of her.

Event Summary: Makeda of The Glamazon Diaries hooked up with Neiman Marcus to showcase the hottest Spring/Summer shoe trends in flats, heels and wedges. There was also a raffle draw and my blogging buddy, Brea, won herself a brand new pair of sequin Toms. Afterwards, Brea and I hit up Pete's New Haven Style Pizza within the area. We didn't eat pizza, though. Had ourselves some pasta and it was oh so good.

Event Summary: I left my house on time but still managed to get to this event late cause of DC's insane traffic. Amazing. Anywho, I had a good time at the DewDrop DC x Snopswap event. This time around the swap focused on designer wears. There was also a fashion presentation, fashion show and numerous pop-up shops. And, of course, food and drinks. This event benefited the work of Becky's Fund, a non-profit organization who's mission is to bring awareness to domestic violence and establish prevention-based educational programs to counter domestic violence.

Yours/Mine Secondhand Shopping Soiree '13

I had the opportunity to be a vendor at the Yours/Mine Secondhand Shopping Soiree (YMSSS) held at the Courtyard Marriott here in DC. It was my first time holding such a title and I was a little bit nervous. But seeing familiar faces all around me including Stania (the event's stylist), Nic and Kizzy (who was vending right next to me), helped calm the nerves. But then it got heighten again when the Paypal reader decided not to work. Luckily, my sister was there to calm me down and gently tell me that I can punch in the card number instead. Whew (It was an extra fee whew but still, whew). I did pretty good in terms of sales. And a lot of folks asked me if I had an online store. I mean, I am thinking of adding a page on my blog to sell off the remaining items. We shall see.

Something Old to Something New

Thank goodness for the weather the DC area had last week cause I don't what the hell has been going on this week. I really want my Spring season. I really do. I'm fearful that Mother Nature is gonna play a cruel joke on me which will turn me into an unhappy camper and forgo Spring to jump straight ahead into Summer. That will murk my soul. Truly. I'm on team #EffSummerTho. It may be only ten of us on that team but we stand strong, yo. I can't stand Summer weather. The heat and the humidity and the HEAT and the HUMIDITY. Just naaah all around. *le sigh*

Anywho, like I was saying. The weather we experienced last week (specifically last Thursday when I took these photos) was just beautiful. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone a wee bit and rock something sleeveless to go along with one of my favorite thrifted skirt (Which has been seen on this blog before. Click here for proof). At first I was gonna rock the Old Navy vest as a...well, as a vest (The tan version has appeared a couple of times on the blog. Click here and here.). So that meant wearing a sleeveless top inside. Then I decided, no, let me try something different with this vest. So I zipped it all the way up, donned a statement necklace underneath the 'collar' and tucked in the vest into the skirt. Voila. The vest has now become a top.

I wanna take this opportunity to thank you for stopping by my blog. It's been a while since I've done that so...there it is. I am truly grateful and appreciative and just thankful. It means the world to me.

Usually around this time of the year we get invited to a bunch of parties to celebrate a high school graduate, college graduate, grad school...graduate, etc achievement(s). Don't forget the pre-wedding parties and the wedding receptions and the baby showers. I mean, that's what Spring/Summer is for, no? For a lot of folks, myself included, thinking about the upcoming events that will eventually turn into you deciding on what to buy and where to buy and how much to spend on said gift can become quite the drag. It comes to a point that we default to the easiest gift choice out there - gift cards. I know I do. You feel slightly guilty but, hey, you know the celebrant could never pass up on a gift card to their favorite store/restaurant. It is what it is.

I got a chance to do a review for a couple of products. My sight was set on the Skyline Wooden Routing. Even though I adore the cities of Chicago and San Fran, my heart really wanted a DC frame. Unfortunately, it's not available. Bummer. BUT I did find two other items that warmed me heart:

MET Gala 2013

Last night was the Met Gala. This year's theme was 'Punk: Chaos to Couture'. Given the theme, I was pretty excited to see everybody's interpretation. I don't know if the theme freaked some folks out but a lot of them played it safe.Very safe. Others just didn't give a damn. (I'm looking at you Mr. Andre Leon Talley). And there were some that thought punk meant ABE (All Black Everything) with hints of leather. It came off looking more goth than punk. It didn't help that we had to watch the live red carpet online and listen to two "hosts" give THE most awkward interviews ever. The same ol' dry questions with the same ol' uncomfortable pauses. *shudders* The funniest moment for me was towards the end when Beyonce arrived and the male host started whispering about her arrival and actually wondered out loud if Beyonce would come over and talk to him. And then right on cue, it was the end of the online red carpet telecast. Rollin'.

Last week I went to see Ms. Solange Knowles in concert. She's the lil' sister of some lady named Beyonce. I guess a few will know of her sister. Maybe...? *shrugs* The venue was at the 9:30 Club which was just recently voted the #1 Venues That Rock by Rolling Stone Magazine. Before hearing Ms. Knowles on stage, we took a quick stroll behind the venue to Satellite Room. I love this place if only because of their Boozy Shakes. I recommend Linus Van Pelt (peanut butter with George Dickel no. 12 Tennessee Whisky), Vincent Vega (vanilla with Bulleit Bourbon) and Latka Gravas (espresso hazelnut with Hennessey VS).

Solange is a FANTASTIC performer. I was seriously blown away. When she hit several high notes during a particular song I almost lost my damn mind (Later on, my sister was like she quickly glanced at me to see my facial expression because she thought I was gonna side eye the high notes. hahaha. I'm not that bad. I mean, I would've done something like that for someone who can't hit high notes like, say, Rihanna). She performed songs from her album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams (I never really cared much for this album save for a few songs) and her latest EP, True (which I really, really liked). Her band was amazing, her background singers were stylish and amazing. The energy inside the club was electric. Solange also took on Selena's I Could Fall in Love which was really beautiful.

If you missed out on her concert don't worry, it seems like this talented young lady will be in a couple of festivals this spring/summer including Sweetlife at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in VA (for all my DC area folks) and Made in America in Philly (Read my recap of this inaugural event here. And, yes, I'm going again!).

Easter has come and gone. But that didn't stop me from wearing my Easter outfit again to make use of the beautiful weather my area experienced one day last week. Funny enough, I had another Easter outfit planned, inspired by Solange, but it didn't work out. I'll save that for another sunny bright day. Anywho, I wore this look on the day of but it was rainy and cold and sucky. Grr. I still wanted to do an outfit post so I asked my sis, after church, to take a photo.

What you can't see is 1) a shivering sister and 2) a steady light drizzle

Yeah. As you can see, that was not gonna work out. So, I decided to chill and wait for a brighter slightly warmer day. I finally got my chance.

Palette-Tini

To say I was geeked that there was an event closer to home would be an understatement. Now don't get me wrong, I love DC events in DC. Truly I do. But it's get to a point when you're tired of taking the metro or trying to figure out if it's good to drive from work and through the horrendous rush hour to get into DC or if such and such event will end in time for you to get home and watch your favorite show or to even get enough sleep in order for you to wake up the next morning ready to go to work on time. I guess I had reach that point.

Last Wednesday I got the chance to check out Palette Arts Studio located in the Palette at Art District Apartments complex in the Arts District neighborhood in Hyattsville, MD. BrandlinkDC put together a wonderful event called Palette-Tini. They brought in GQ Magazine's DC's Most Imaginative Bartender 2012 Brennan Adams to mix up some creative cocktails. His question of the evening was, "Do you want floral or spicy?" And me not being a fan of spicy food (so much so that I stay getting questioned if I'm really Nigerian) I chose floral. My floral pick lead to The Scream which is Brut Sparkling Wine, St. Germain Elderflower Liquer, sparkling water and a lemon twist. So, so good. So effin' good that I had two. So I was sorta kinda feelin' it through out the night.

I guess me feeling good led me to believe that I was some sorta artist. Fun Fact: I used to draw quite a lot growing up. Loved drawing. But the passion kinda left me some time during my high school years in Nigeria. I truly wished I honed into my skill. Anywho, the event had another room filled with art and paint and easels and sketch books and a real artist sketching a model for the evening. The artist was Martin Swift. It didn't even occur to me to take a photo of his finished work. Whoops. Well, just click his name and check out his blog.

I had such a great time. This coming Tuesday they are hosting another event and this time it'll be sushi roll making. I love me some sushi. I'll be there for that.

Eccentric Panther

I was so focused this fine early Easter morning to find this gem. I remember watching it live and literally wiping tears from my eyes. Guys, I don't usually laugh so hard that I cry. I leave that for my good friend Mgbeks and my cousin. But, yo, this audition had me laughing so hard that I had legit tears.

So here I was on YouTube watching Bro. Franklin and then *cues next scene* I found myself watching folks versions of "Top Worst Idol Auditions Ever!" or "Top 10 Funniest Worst Idol Audtions!" and not even breaking a pursed smile. I mean, how come I didn't laugh? Was it me? Was it them? (It was definitely them. Def.) Anywho, I spent the next 15 mins searching high and low for my funniest ~~worst~~ best American Idol audition ever.

Behold the greatness that is Martik Manoukian aka Eccentric. I mean, how can you not like someone who is so determined that not only is he an athlete but will also get into acting and will also get into modelling and will get into being...an author, singer, songwriter, rapper, choreographer, producer AND composer. C'mon. You can't knock a hustle like that. You just can't.

Hilar. And I am happy to report that this audition still had me wiping tears from my eyes five years later.

Meanwhile, as much as I like fine-ass Keith Urban and cuckoo Nicki Minaj, I do miss the original trio of Randy, Paula and Simon.

Oh and if you didn't laugh once during this video then you need to reevaluate your funny bone. *smiles*

Earlier this week I was invited to cover FashionablyLOUD Fashion Show held at Ibiza Nightclub (first time there). The event, created by Anwaa Kong of Elite DC and Harley of ROE The Agency, was a chance to bring a creative blend of music and fashion to DC.

The fashion show featured local DC area designers Renee Cabactnoh, Bravata (Instagram: @Bravata_Ultra), Uniquely Atypical, American MADE, The Lava Boutique, King O Designs, Eva's Prissy Treasures, EthniCITY Designs and SPACY CLOUD. It also featured designers outside the area: Faye's Closet (Baltimore), D'Haun Apparel (Atlanta) and Jeri Wood (Baltimore). The crowd enjoyed live performances from Kingpen Slim, Dunson, Phil Da Phuture, Jayne Kennedi and EPIC recording artist Marcus Canty, (he finished in 4th place during the first season of X-Factor).

Casual Saturday

Rockin' (faux) leather this Spring is it thing to do. That's what I've read, y'know, in fashion magazines and what have you. Granted, it's meant to be (faux) leather items in spring-like colors. And as you can see in the photos below, I ain't rocking a (faux) leather item in spring-like colors. #wompwomp. But I do enjoy seeing others do the same. I personally think that leather can be worn in the Spring time. Hell, even in the Summer! I mean, hello, leather shorts. It can be done.

As I've mentioned before, I'm participating in a weekly challenge created by Nel of Girls of Plenty. Along with Georgette of Grown & Curvy Woman, Deb of Real Girl Runway, Kim of Curvy CEO and Society of Curves, we are to give our take on the hottest Spring trends this year. It started off with black/white then florals and now leather (This challenge was meant for last week but...yeah. Exactly.) The finale, which is this week, will be emerald. Be on the look out.

This past Saturday I had the chance to attend Gilt City DC Warehouse Sale at Longview Gallery. I was slotted for 11am-1pm. I didn't get there until 12:30pm. There's nothing much more to say about my lateness. I'm really trying to work on this. No, I am. Believe me. Seriously. Anywho, it was complete mayhem inside. Ladies and fellas going from rack to rack and table to table searching for the best deal they can get. Everything from clothing to comforters, shoes to scarves. You name it, they had it. I was impressed. Though there was a XL rack I didn't find much there. But I did luck up on a beautiful ivory franchi small clutch with pearl detailing (Originally $200+. Got it for $39.99) and a black out men's Nixon watch (Originally $200+. Got it for $39.99). Gilt City provided us with awesome music, snacks and sips from La Marca Prosecco, Whitehaven Wine and New Amsterdam Vodka with Coco Coconut Water. I would love to attend this event again and try to get there on time.

Ryan went backstage to bring out the next person to make it through to the following week's live show. It was Candice Glover. She was beyond herself. Ecstatic. Jumping up and down with complete joy. And it was warranted, too. You see, she had audition for Idol three times. THREE EFFIN' TIMES. How someone with her talent not have gone through the FIRST time is beyond me. And last year when she got cut during Hollywood Round I was HEATED. It's like, what in the world were the Idol producers looking for, though? Anywho, she performed her congratulatory song and, of course, slayed. The judges gave her a standing ovation, the crowd was going insane and even Ryan couldn't contain his awe. Candice was soaking everything in. It was when Randy started proclaiming his love for Candice and her talent that she finally broke down and cried. And I, too, began to cry. I usually don't cry at stuff like this. Like my heart would swell but that's about as far as it would go. Something in my felt what Candice was experiencing. The whole scene made me realize that your dream will eventually come true. Your accolades will eventually come your way. Just never give up. Continue to strive. Have the focus and determination to believe in yourself and keep moving towards your goal. Eventually, you will be rewarded at the end. I have to remind myself this every blessed day because sometimes I forget or don't even try. Hence the crying.

My friend Ada Emihe aka Avaloni Studios, just so happened to be around my 'hood this past weekend. She offered to take a bunch of photos for my blog. And I quickly screamed. Well, I whispered screamed. I'm sure she thought I was crazy. (This conversation happened over the phone). Anywho, I picked a location near a friend's house we were heading to afterwards. I truly appreciate her doing this for me. I can't wait for our next 'shoot featuring me wearing a much more snazzier outfit. I mean, I like this outfit. Perfect for the beautiful Spring weather we had that day. But when one hears/sees 'photo shoot' don't you expect to see a snazzy outfit? I know I do.

Meanwhile it seems like my favorite mixed patterns combo are polka dots and floral. See here for proof. One day, I will graduate to something a bit more extreme like what Solange rocked a couple days ago:

Alrighty. Let's begin. Spring time is pretty much around the corner and for us that loves style and fashion that means scoping out to see what will be the hottest trends of this particular season. Nel of Girls of Plenty asked a few plus size bloggers to join her in showcasing our interpretation of the latest Spring trends. 4 trends. 4 weeks throughout the month of March. Starting off with, I feel, the most popular trend at the moment...BLACK AND WHITE. I truly enjoy this trend more when I see it with black+white prints (like the photo above). So the only way I can see myself pulling this off is by doing so with prints.

Here's my attempt -

It's funny how you have a certain look in your head and you think you own an item that would complete the look and you realize that, alas, you do not own that item. Case in point: a black+white bag. That would have really set this outfit more on trend then just a plain ol' black bag. Lately, I've seen a lot of folks in black+white shoes. I can definitely get on board for a mixture of black+white shoes. I'm still not too keen on white shoes, though. We shall see.

I wore this to catch the launch of Nic+Zoe new collection at Lord & Taylor. The event was hosted by Lori Bergamotto, Style Editor of Lucky Magazine (She's really funny.) and Lacey of A Lacey Perspective. The collection, itself, is nicely done. No, it does not offer plus size but there were some items that I'm pretty sure I could've pulled off. I got a chance to talk with Zoe. She explained that the mastermind behind Nic+Zoe is actually her mom, Dorian Lightbown. The name "Nic+Zoe" comes from her children Nicholas and Zoe. Also, I stopped by Violet Boutique to celebrate their 2nd anniversary. Any opportunity for me to go to Violet Boutique, I'm there. Now, I need to head there when there's not an event happening. That way, I can truly enjoy the store and what it has to offer...which is A LOT. Julie, the owner, is a complete sweetheart. She absolutely deserves the best.

There was a time when I was really into Target bags. This was some 6-7 years ago. I remembered when I got the Rafe for Target handbag (*minutes pass as I check Google to find the exact bag I purchased* I found it! woop, woop. Click here). It was one of my very first Target bag. I became hooked. The last bag I've purchased from them was the Mulberry for Target small crossover bag (which I still love, by the way). Almost 3 years ago. I don't know why I stopped buying bags from Target. No particular reason. ~~I blame the thrift stores~~. Anywho, late last year I was in the store to buy some skin products and somehow, someway found myself in the accessories section. That's Target for you. My eyes fell upon this metallic gold satchel. Skin products were no longer on my mind. I had to get the bag. And, luckily for me, it was 25% off. Schwing.

For all my bloggers out there, have you ever created a post with nothing much to say? I'm over here racking my brain to try to come up with something to type that doesn't start off with "I am wearing..." But, it's about to be that way. Now I see why Blair of Atlantic-Pacific just posts photos and call it a day; the outfit speaks for itself. I mean, I don't want leave you guys with the photos having nothing to say. *le sigh* Let me give it a try and see what I can come up with.

Over the weekend I got a chance to hang out with Brea and Kim. We chilled at the W Lobby. Loving the decor and realizing that my outfit (and Brea's) kinda meshes pretty well with it, we decided to use the lobby as the backdrop. I am rockin' a men's sweater Gap. It has an oversized feel. Also, this was one of the items I got from the Edited for Goodwill pop-up shop I attended a couple of months ago. The original tag was still attached and it read $59.99. I bought it for $6. iWin.

I absolutely adore these shoes. When I say Avenue is steppin' their game up something serious...Anywho, the gray metal studded bows are just too cute. And, for someone like myself who is not a fan of heels (no matter the inches), these are surprisingly comfortable. I'm guessing because of the hidden platform.

Oscars 2013

And the award show that everyone in Hollywood and beyond have been waiting for finally arrived. Last night was the 2013 Oscars telecast. Seth McFarlane, he of "Family Guy" (one of my favorite shows) and "Ted" (haven't watched the movie...yet) fame was the host of the evening. Save for the way too damn long opening musical number, he did a pretty good job. My favorite joke of the evening was this: *Seth McFarlane talking to Daniel Day-Lewis* "Your process fascinates me. You were 100 percent in character as Lincoln during the making of the movie. 24/7. So when you saw a cell phone would you have to go, like, 'Oh my God, what's that?!!!' If you bumped into Don Cheadle on the studio lot, did you try to free him? How deep did your method go?" D O N E.

Congratulations to...Jennifer Hudson for her phenomenal performance of "And I Am Telling You". Yes, you read that right. The movie came out seven years ago (2006. I watched it in theater twice.) But this year's Oscars decided to have a musical tribute of past musicals. Anywho, Jennifer did her thang and I got goosebumps. Also, congratulations to Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Lawrence, Adele for "Skyfall" (however, not a fan of the song...she's half way to being an EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), Quentin Tarantino and Argo.

Happy President's Day! And to the rest of the world, Happy Monday.

Saturday was filled with gloom and doom...according to the meteorologists. Talkin' bout all day snow showers. Since I've been wearing a lot of dark colors of late and I didn't want my outfit to reflect the gloom and doom of outside, I decided to switch the flip and brighten up my day by wearing something bright. Started off with my trusty cobalt jeans from Forever 21+.

The top is a kicky paisley blouse from Romans via thrift. The blouse is pretty light and sheer (for the weather), so on went the Old Navy cobalt cable knit pull-over sweater. I think my ears wanted in on the fun, too. I adorned it with a pair of fancy jeweled earrings from Shop Nic's Picks. Finally came the dark colors in the navy blue purse I recently purchased from Dress for Success tag sale ($6!) and patent black Payless flats.

The Grammy Awards 2013

I really can't give a well thought-out recap of the 2013 Grammy Awards. I missed pretty much all of the Red Carpet save for a few folks. As for the televised awards show itself, I didn't get to watch a bunch of performances. Based off the performances I did watch, my favorite of the night was the Levon Helm tribute ft. Elton John, Zac Brown, T-Bone Burnett, Mumford & Sons, Mavis Staples and Brittany Howard, lead singer of Alabama Shakes. I also enjoyed performances by fun., Miguel/Wiz Khalifa, Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson. Considering that I've seen him perform live in DC last year and I also enjoyed his performance on SNL, I was kinda hoping and praying Frank Ocean would knock it out the park on the Grammy stage. *pregnant pause* *crickets* Well, um, that did not happen. It was not good. At all. Even his whistling was slight. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up as nerves. Yeah, that's it. Nerves. :o/

Let me tell you about these Lane Bryant Lace Print Skinny Jeans (similar here). I purchased the item online a couple of months ago. I bought my usual size. The size I always get in pants/jeans at other stores like Forever 21, Avenue, Simply Be, etc. I slipped on the jeans and everything was all fine and dandy until it was time to zip up and button up. I could not zip up and button up. At all. Like, even with all my breathe in-ing...nada. I was pissed. That's Lane Bryant and their weird-ass sizing for you. Anywho, last week I decided to press my luck again and try on the jeans. Everything was all fine and dandy until it was time to zip up and button up. *smiles* It zipped up and buttoned up. And I didn't have to breathe in, either.

Bag: ASOS

I finally got to pair it with my Old Navy sweater. I've always had this pairing in mind (click here and scroll down to the last paragraph for proof). Also rocking one of my most recent purchase: New Look Layla Large Stud Tote via ASOS. A structure bag is the way to go. So versatile.

Statement Necklace: Accessories We Love

This would probably be a good time to congratulate the Ravens on winning the Super Bowl. But I just don't care for them. Then again, I found myself rooting for them. The whole living in MD (even though I'm in the DC area) kinda messed with my brain a bit. Anywho, it was a funny game. With the whole 49ers getting butt hurt in the beginning and starting fights then the blackout that lasted for almost 40mins and finally 49ers using that extended break to regain momentum. The halftime show was just not it, though. Beyonce gave ya'll the live singing that ya'll wanted. She could've kept it. I was excited to see Kelly. She looked AMAZING. Michelle was Michelle. Poor Michelle.
