Well, the food that we consume travels from our mouth to our stomach via the food pipe or the esophagus. The peristaltic movement of the muscles in the alimentary canal, allow the movement of the bolus only in one direction, that is, from the mouth towards the intestine, and finally the anus. The movement of the bolus from the esophagus to the stomach is controlled by a ring of muscle known as the ‘Lower Esophageal Sphincter Muscle’, which is present just at the juncture of the esophagus and the stomach. It usually allows the food to pass only one way from the mouth to the stomach. Its main function is to prevent the contents of the stomach to travel back into the food pipe, and thereby aid in the digestion process. However, sometimes, due to a spicy and fatty diet, or due to a poor lifestyle (late night dinner, just before going to bed; a very heavy and stuffing dinner; alcohol consumption, too many chocolates, obesity, very little water intake, etc), the lower esophageal sphincter muscle gets weakened and the stomach contents tend to leak back into the esophagus. When the contents of the stomach (and the digestive juices that are present in the stomach), leak back or get refluxed into the esophagus, then it is known as acid reflux or GERD, which results in a painful burning sensation in the esophageal area and even in the throat. This painfulness or burning sensation that arises in the chest, right at the back of the sternum, is known as ‘heartburn’.<br/><br/>With so many different types of acid reflux medicines available for treating heartburn and acid reflux symptoms, people often get confused while selecting the best acid reflux medicines, which can provide them with the most reliable and effective acid reflux cures. Moreover, prolonged use of these medicines, as in the case of chronic acid reflux patients is dangerous. For instance, prolonged use of antacids can lead to the formation of stones in the kidneys. The three most commonly used herbal remedies are chamomile, which is botanically known as Matricaria Recutita. Peppermint which is also botanically known as Mentha Piperita and Ginger that is botanically known as Zingiber Officinale.<br/><br/>These three herbal heartburn remedies fall into a group of herbs that are described by the General Nutrition Center as &#8220;carminative&#8221;. They all have the ability to relieve indigestion and ease irritation that occurs in the intestines. The herb chamomile is traditionally recognized for its calming properties. As chamomile has a high calcium content it has the ability to decrease stomach acid. Therefore chamomile is thought to help ease esophageal irritation and help with proper digestion.<br/><br/>Ginger has been used traditionally for dealing with many different gastrointestinal (stomach) problems. Ginger also has some anti-inflammatory as well as anti-nausea properties. Both these actions of ginger give relief to heartburn sufferers. There is one other action that ginger is widely known for. Ginger is a very good herbal heartburn remedy as it aids in the proper digestion process by promoting spontaneous intestinal movement.<br/><br/>Peppermint is also thought to have healing properties against indigestion. Peppermint also has the additional property of calming the stomach. A study that was done of peppermint in combination with the caraway fruit found that they have the same ease of relieving the symptoms of heartburn as Chamomile and Ginger do.<br/><br/>The General Nutrition Center has suggested that herbs that have a &#8220;bitter digestive stimulant&#8221; property might be used as well. They believe that theses herbs may produce natural digestive enzymes. Herbs like blessed thistle are advocated in the hopes that they will alleviate heartburn. As there is no clear way of knowing their effects, blessed thistle and other such herbs are not as universally recommended.<br/><br/>Whereas chamomile, ginger and peppermint are known and recognized for their potential as a herbal heartburn remedy. As with all medications, you should consult a doctor before you begin using any sort of herbal remedy. Heartburn, which is another name for indigestion, is basically a burning sensation which rises from the stomach to the throat. Sometimes, it can also be felt around the lower part of the chest. Sometimes you may feel that the food is making a return journey back to your mouth- and there could be a bitter or sour after taste. During pregnancy, nearly 50% of the women experience heartburn.<br/><br/>However you can curb heartburn to an extent during pregnancy by following a smart diet- following are some tips to help you:-<br/><br/>• Rich and fried foods which are high in fat should be avoided. E.g. Fries or large helpings of ice-creams, sweets or desserts should be avoided.<br/><br/>• Avoid spicy food. Therefore limit your binging on Tortillas or Nachos and all those yummy but tangy foods (Think Mexican, think Thai).<br/><br/>• Grapefruit juice or orange juice can also create havoc with your system. So steer clear of them. Try milk or apple juice.<br/><br/>• Chocolates, soft drinks, coffee and caffeine laced food should be cut down upon.<br/><br/>• Try to have little snacks at small intervals rather than large heavy meals. Large meals tend to be heavier on the stomach and create built up of unwanted and unnecessary acids. Smaller meals when taken at regular intervals help in keeping the calorie intake high, which is needed for pregnancy. At the same time undue strain on the digestive system is avoided.<br/><br/>• Try and stay away from late night munching. You should let some hours pass after your dinner and then hit the bed. Lying down on a full stomach is not a good idea.<br/><br/>• Refrain from gobbling your food- even if it happens to be your most favorite food. Food should be eaten slowly and chewed properly.<br/><br/>• Don&#8217;t forget to drink ample water.<br/><br/>• Exercise! It aides digestion, which means lesser chances of indigestion or heartburn.<br/><br/>If possible don&#8217;t resort to any medications when you are experiencing heartburn. However, if you absolutely must- consult your doctor/gynecologist first.<br/><br/>Ultimately it all depends on what you eat and at what time. And try to sleep early as this will prevent you from creeping into the kitchen for some midnight snacking! If you are suffering from continual heartburn it is important to check if there have been any alterations in diet, excessive consumption of alcohol,increased stress or the taking of strong medications on a regular basis.<br/><br/>For chronic heartburn to be confirmed a substantial change must have occured, if the person’s diet or other aspects of their lifestyle have not changed, it could be a sign of other medical problems. It is important to be aware of the circumstances as persons using self-treatment to combat chronic heartburn may be masking the symptoms of these more serious problems<br/><br/>Typically, heartburn is caused by the contents in the stomach being pushed back into the esophagus, causing the acid in the stomach to irritate its sensitive lining. There are many causes of this such as:<br/><br/>- gastrointestinal reflux disease,<br/><br/>- a hiatal hernia<br/><br/>- or a blockage in the stomach.<br/><br/>When a person suffers from chronic heartburn it is advisable to check with a doctor to rule out any of these major problems.<br/><br/>Usually, when a person suffers from heartburn, it is not uncommon if dietary habits are inconsistent or they eat or drink something that is high in acidic content the digestive system works overtime producing excessive acids. In these cases and over the counter medication will usually quell the burning sensation and it will disappear once the substance has been processed. However, If it continues for several days during a week or two, chronic heartburn may be diagnosed and will be treated with prescription medications.<br/><br/>Extinguishing The Fire In The Belly<br/><br/>For those suffering from chronic heartburn, they are also at risk for developing ulcers in the esophagus as well as in the stomach. Many times, it is the result of the stomach being fooled into thinking more acid is needed to help with the digestive process that exacerbates the situation. Many believe falsely that drinking milk can calm an acid stomach when in reality milk may actually trigger the stomach’s acid pumps to produce more due to the added content in the stomach.<br/><br/>Anybody suffering from chronic heartburn will need to change their lifestyle to help eliminate the problem. This usually requires a change of diet(ie staying away from rich fatty foods that require a lot of digestion and sticking to more fresh fruit and vegetables that are much easier to digest). If it is determined the heartburn is being caused by prescription medication, the doctor may alter the dosage of the medication or change to another type if one is available. The patient may also be prescribed anti-acid medication until the offending medication is better accepted by the person and the side effects disappear.<br/><br/>Acid indigestion, as it is often called, can be an extremely uncomfortable feeling. It can also offer similar symptoms of a heart attack and should never be ignored.
