The points to be borne in children's handicrafts are:(a) that they should not be employed in making futilities such a pea and stick work, paper mats, and the like; (b) that they should be taught slowly and carefully what they are to do; (c) that slipshod work should not be allowed; (d) and that, therefore, the children's work should be kept well within their compass.

Handicrafts have always been a part of my life...since I was a homeschooled child myself. And I am always on the lookout for handicraft ideas to include in my handicraft kits. Here at Hearts and Trees, one of our main aims is to encourage you to include handicrafts in your homeschool. We find though that many parents feel overwhelmed by the idea of handicrafts.

The Internet is a great place to start when researching ideas for handicrafts to include in your homeschool. Step-by-step photo or video tutorials can help YOU teach your children the craft. For example I recently searched for friendship bracelets...and here are just a few of the websites that I found that you could use to include this handicraft in your homeschool.

Garden Seed Kit

With my mom's help we have put together a kit full of art, nature study and handicraft goodness that you are sure to love.The overall theme of this kit is gardens. The nature study projects in this kit will inspire you and your children to get out in your garden and explore.

Our aim is to help you include art, nature study and handicrafts in your homeschool. Our kits are designed with children ages 6-12 in mind. Younger children will just need more hands-on help while older children can be more self-directed. You will need to provide some basic arts and crafts supplies to complete the projects in this kit (glue, scissors, etc.)

The instructions, felt and magnet are included for your child to complete a Stiff Felt Magnet Dragonfly Pendant. This is sure to be a hit. There should be enough scrap felt for your child to design a second felt item of his choice.

Another project in this kit is a Botanical Solar Print. The instructions and paper are included for your child to complete two solar prints using items he collects from your garden.

The materials and instructions are also included for your child to create a Sticky Garden Fun Window Project. After collecting colorful items from your garden your child will create their own window art.

The instructions and tissue paper are also included for your child to make their own Easy Tissue Paper Mache vase. (You will need to provide the smooth vase or jar and tissue paper colors may vary.)

The foam and instructions are included for your child to make his very own foam stamps. He will then use the stamps to decorate the cover of his Garden Journal.

The nature study portion of this focuses on seeds. Four different kinds of seeds are provided for your child to study and observe grow. A Seed Comparison notebooking page is included as well as one about Seed Dissection and Seed Germination.

Instructions and a piece of chalk are also provided for your child to make his own Sidewalk Garden Scavenger Hunt. A laminated card is also provided for you and your child to use on your next nature walk as well.

The art part of this kit focuses on Renoir and Monet. An art print of Renoir's Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil is included as well as a notebooking page focusing on this artwork and one focusing on the similarities between Renoir and Monet. An index card is also included for your child to make a viewfinder to aid in his study of their Renoir's art print. An extra art print (prints will vary) is also included for your child to study using his viewfinder.

In all this kit includes:

Free Printable: Color Walk Worksheet

Hearts and Trees Color Nature Walk Worksheet

I have put together another free printable. This is a color walk worksheet. Your child will choose twelve colors to search for on his nature walk. Lines are provided for your child to write the color name and to write what he finds that is that color. There is also a box for him to sketch one of the items after the walk.

Pull out your big box of crayons or colored pencils and get started!

You can tailor your color hunt to the season or to a specific item (colored flowers, leaves, etc.). Get creative!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Shades of green
Shades of pink
Shades of brown
Spring flower colors
Autumn leaf colors
Summer vegetable garden colors
Winter blues and grays

An alternative is to fill in the colored squares as you find the colors on your nature walk. You'd just need to take the box of crayons as color samples!

This Hearts and Trees online art show focuses on gardens. I encourage you to share this art show with your children and to have a discussion about the different ways these artists painted gardens.

I have put together a set of notebooking pages for the Gardens Art Show, like the ones I am offering for my clouds and still life art shows. So be sure to check out my Gardens in Art Mini Unity Study Notebooking Pages PDF!

Here are some suggestions of questions you can discuss with your children as you examine each painting.

How did each painter see gardens differently?
Look for cool and warm colors.
How many paintings have people in them?
How many paintings have animals?
How many paintings have buildings?
Decide on the "mood" of each painting- how does each painting make you feel?
Use the canvas measurements provided to see just how big or small a painting is.
Decide which painting is the most realistic and which is the least realistic.
Which is your favorite painting?
If you could change the name of a painting, what would you name it? Why?
If you find a painting you like, take a minute to look at some other paintings by that artist. (Artchive and ABC Gallery are where I found these paintings.
You could make your own version of your favorite garden painting.
You could sketch your own garden in the style of your favorite artist.

Frog Study Mini Unit and Lapbook PDF

I have put together a PDF mini unit and lapbook that contains the frog study from my Hearts and Trees Spring 2009 kit. The lapbook focuses on frogs and nature study near lakes, rivers, streams or ponds. My mom helped me to design a frog file-folder book (which you could mount on cardstock if you prefer). In the lapbook there are components for vocabulary, frog facts, bullfrog facts, frog noises, and the frog life cycle. In the lapbook you can also mount your life cycle of a frog drawing (instructions for this drawing project are included).

There is also a set of copy work pages focusing on frog poetry. There are two blank lined pages you can use for the copy work, as well as a page of frog poetry and suggestions for how to use them.

Hearts and Trees Winter Fun Kit

I am pleased to introduce my:

This kit has an overall theme of "Winter Fun" and is filled with fun art, handicraft and nature study projects for you to include in your homeschool. Our aim is to encourage you to take the projects in this kit and make them your own...to take the skills your child develops by completing these projects and expand on them in other creative ways.

There are so many fun projects included in this kit!

The highlight of this kit, is an old favorite. Back in 2007 my Winter Kit included the materials and instructions for a easy fleece hat. I have had requests to repeat this project, and I have listened! Any child who can sew a straight line can complete this project! Your child will absolutely love this project. You might just find yourself going out to buy more fleece to make hats for everyone in your family! (When you make your payment through PayPal, leave me a comment letting me know what color fleece you would like: gray, purple or blue.)

Your child will also experiment with paint and texture to create a set of six different notecards. Your child will paint using a cork, cardboard, Q-tips, yarn, a sponge and bubble wrap. All the materials (except the paint) are included for this fun (and functional) project.

Winter is a perfect time to plant an indoor tabletop garden. Using the tops of root vegetables your child will observe as they sprout and grow leaves and even flowers! The instructions are included as well as a notebooking page where your child can record his observations.

The featured artist in this kit is Renoir. There is an art print of Renoir's The Umbrellas. A notebooking page focusing on Renoir is found in this kit. The art element is shades of color. Your child will learn about shades of color and complete another notebooking page to color their own version of The Umbrellas.

There is a very colorful origami project as well. Eight colors of tissue paper and the instructions are included so your child can make up to FOUR tissue paper stars. Your child will love making these colorful stars!

A pair of google eyes are also in this kit, as well as the instructions so your child can complete an easy and yet fun drawing project.

The nature study portion of this kit is a laminated 3"x5" card which you and your child can take out with you when you go on your winter nature walk. There are nine different things your child can cross off the card (using a whiteboard marker) when he finds them on your nature walk. Think of it as a sort of scavenger hunt. The items on the card are winter focused...things everyone should be able to find on a walk in the winter.

In all, this kit includes:

Easy fleece hat project (fleece-color will vary, 3 straight pins, instructions)
Six painting projects notecard project (6 notecards, bubble wrap, cork, 5 Q-Tips, rubberband, 2 pieces of sponge, length of yarn, cardboard and instructions)
Renoir print of The Umbrellas
Renoir/Shades of Color notebooking pages (2)
3"x5" laminated nature walk scavenger hunt card
Tabletop garden nature study notebooking page with 9 toothpicks to complete the project

I have put together a really fun free printable...perfect for fall...A Digital Camera Fall Scavenger Hunt.

I was inspired by my mom's post about nature study and digital cameras. What child doesn't love it when you let him use a digital camera? Using my free printable, your child will look for different things to photograph while on your nature walk. How many can he find?

When you are done, print your child's favorite photo of that day and mount it in the frame provided on the printable. There is also a space for your child to describe his favorite photograph.

I have had a few questions about the difference between the Hearts and Trees Kits I offer for sale through my blog and The Hearts and Trees Digital Magazines that I also have for sale.

Hearts and Trees Kits

Basically, a Hearts and Trees Kit is a packet of instructions and materials to help you add art, handicraft and nature study into your homeschool. When you purchase a kit, it is physically mailed to you. Each kit is full of a variety notebooking pages, an art print, art projects, instructions for handicraft projects and all the materials you need to complete the projects (except for some common art supplies I assume you will already have on hand.)

I usually have at least one kit for sale at a time. (But right now I currently have three with another once coming out soon!) Each kit has a different theme and set of projects and notebooking pages.

Art, Handicraft and Nature Study Kit

My mom and little brother and I have teamed together to create the newest generation of Hearts and Trees kits. The purpose of Hearts and Trees has remained the same: to introduce and encourage art, handicrafts and nature study in your homeschool. The real change is the division of labor between my mom and little brother and me. (Hopefully this will mean I will be able to offer kits more regularly!)

Anyway, here is what this kit offers:

To start with we have a felt bracelet project. Your child will create his own felt bracelet. Your child will learn how to sew on a 4-holed button. A variety of colors of felt will be provided (colors may vary from the photo above) as well as the needle, thread, buttons and instructions.

One of the themes throughout this project is bubbles. Your child will make his own bubble wand using pipe cleaners and beads. The pipe cleaner, beads and instructions are all included.

Along with that there is a bubble painting project. Your child will create his own bubble paint and then use the included watercolor paper, straw and instructions to make a painting with bubbles. This is sure to be a hit!

There is also a notebooking page focusing on how to make bubble letters. A link to a video tutorial is included.

Another project is the foam and foil pendant. Your child will create his own design to emboss on a foil covered piece of foam. The possibilities are endless for this one! Your child is free to be as creative as he likes. The foam, foil, yarn and instructions are all included.

For the lavender focused part of this kit, your child will create a dried lavender sachet. The fabric, thread, needle yarn and dried lavender and instructions are included. ***PLEASE NOTE: If you or your child is allergic to lavender just let us know and we will not send the dried lavender!***

There is also an eight page nature journal focusing on lavender. Your child will assemble the nature journal using the cover, pages and a length of twine. A sample lavender flower is provided for you to study. The cardboard, rubber bands and link to instructions are provided so that you can make a flower press. Waxed paper and instructions are also included to make a waxed paper pouch to mount the pressed lavender into the nature journal.

The artist study features Jean Simeon Chardin. An art print of his painting Soap Bubbles and 2 notebooking pages are found in this kit.

With the success of Hearts and Trees Volume 1: All About Colors! I am excited to share with you all the latest product of Hearts and Trees. This volume is 23 pages filled with fun and interesting art, handicraft and nature study projects for you and your child to complete!

I am so excited to finally share with you Hearts and Trees Volume 2. Believe it or not I started putting it together in February. I can't believe it is almost June and I am just now getting it up for sale. Life has been busy!

Enough about that...here are the details about what is included in this edition of Hearts and Trees.

I hope this volume of Hearts and Trees encourages you to include art, handicrafts and nature study in your homeschool. I hope you find the projects in this online magazine both engaging and affordable.

This magazine is designed for children ages 6-12. Younger children will need more hands-on help from parents, while older children will be able to complete more of the projects on their own.

Make your own Russian Stacking Dolls!

Hearts and Trees Volume 2 includes a wide array of notebooking pages focusing on the Russian painter Nicolai Galakhov, Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Siberian animals, etc… There is also a page to design your own Russian stacking dolls and a link is provided on the supply list page to purchase unpainted wooden stacking dolls for your child to paint. This is a project your child is sure to love and remember!

Doodle Pattern Project Sample

The art element notebooking page focuses on pattern. A very fun and intersting doodle pattern project it also included. This is a project your child is sure to love...the possibilities are endless!

Drawstring Treasure Pouch

The instructions are included for your child to sew his very own drawstring treasure pouch. You will be amazed how quickly and easily this project will come together.

Word Cloud Sample

There are also the instructions to learn how to make a digital word cloud using the free website tagxedo.com. Once your child learns this technique, he can use it for all sorts of projects. This one is sure to be a hit!

24 pages filled with fun and interesting art, handicraft and nature study projects for you and your child to complete!

Welcome to a new experiment from Hearts and Trees! I have put together an online magazine filled with fun and interesting art, handicraft and nature study projects to share with your children.

My goal for this magazine is the same as it was for my kits. It is my aim to encourage art, handicrafts and nature study in your homeschool by providing interesting and affordable ideas and products. This magazine is designed for children ages 6-12. Younger children will need more hands-on help from parents, while older children will be able to complete more of the projects on their own. It is my plan to offer a new volume of this magazine each month.

These volumes are going to be more topic/theme oriented than seasonal, so each volume will always be for sale on my blog and will provide fun and engaging projects no matter what the time of year.

Each volume will include notebooking pages and projects similar to what were included in my kits. The main difference is you will need to provide all the materials yourself. The last page of this magazine will always include a Supply List for you to consult as well as the link to an online Amazon store filled with all the things you will need to have on-hand to complete all of the projects in this volume of Hearts and Trees. It is my goal to include projects that will use materials that you most likely already have in your house or that can easily and affordably be obtained locally or online.

I would like to help you introduce your children to new art, handicraft and nature study projects that they can then take and make their own. Feel free to adapt and recreate this projects in your own way.

The theme for this volume is "All About Colors!"

Learn all about the color wheel!

Your child will learn about primary, secondary and tertiary colors using the color wheel flashcards. He will then make his own color wheel by mixing primary colors to make the secondary and then tertiary colors.

Does your child know what color is indigo? Or mauve? In the Color Names Vocabulary project he will be introduced to 20 new colors!

The feautired artist for this volume is the Fauvist artist Andre Derain. Your child will study his painting Charring Cross Bridge, London and then complete his own landscape imitating the style of the Fauvist artists.

What makes a rainbow? Your child will learn the answer to this question and then make his own rainbow indoors using water, a small mirror and sunlight!

Colors have an affect on our emotions and with the "How Colors Make us Feel" notebooking page your child will study two art prints and compare how the colors in the paintings make him feel.

Make a digital photo collage with Picnik.

Your child will use a digital camera to photograph interesting colors and will then learn how to make a digital photo collage online using the FREE (no registration required) website Picnik. This is a really fun project your child is sure to love.

One of the handicraft projects in this kit is learn how to make beads out of recycled paper. This is a very fun and easy project your child is sure to enjoy. The color of the beads will depend entirely on what color of recycled paper you use!

Another handicraft project your child will complete in this volume of Hearts and Trees is a decorative embroidery project. Your child will embroider his name using two decorative stitches. He will learn how to backstitch and split stitch.

The nature study portion of this volume focuses on parrots. Your child will learn some facts about parrots and then choose a parrot to research more in-depth. He will also complete an art project using oil pastels (or whatever other medium you choose) to draw a tropical bird.

There is also a feature about colorful clothing around the world. Your child will learn a little about kimonos, saris and Mexican embroidery and then color his own kimono.

This magazine is jam-packed with fun and exciting projects for you in include in your homeschool. I am very excited to share this new product with you all.

There are some really fun and exciting projects in this kit. Each kit includes the instructions and most of the materials to complete easy and fun art, handicraft and nature study projects. (Please note you will need to supply some common art supplies to complete these projects such as scissors, paintbrush and markers.)

To start with we have a mini canvas magnet project. Your child will design an abstract painting on a miniature canvas. It's just 2" x 4"! The mini canvas and the magnetic tape are included as well as all the instructions to get you started.

The next project is a pair of finger knit flowers. These are so simple and fun to make. Your child will learn to finger knit using my video tutorials. The yarn and yarn needle needed to complete this project are included in your kit. (Yarn colors will vary.)

The next project is a newspaper butterfly garland. Your child will make a colorful butterfly garland to hang up somewhere in your house. The instructions and twine are included.

With the last handicraft project in this kit, your child will learn how to make a 3-dimensional "painting" with tissue paper pulp. Your child will really enjoy this new technique. All the tissue paper, canvas and instructions needed to complete this interesting project can be found in this kit.

The featured artist is Martin Johnson Heade and the art print is his Blue Morpho Butterfly. There is a notebooking page focusing on Heade and the included art print.

The art element being discussed in this kit is contrast. The contrast notebooking page will help your child to learn what contrast in art is and to recognize contrasts in the Blue Morpho Butterfly art print.

There is also a notebooking page focusing on textures. There is a texture rubbing project your child will complete. He will be encouraged to think of descriptive words to describe different textures he views in works of art.

The nature study portion of this kit is a 3 page set of notebooking pages focusing on butterflies. Your child will learn about the life cycle of butterflies, how to tell a male and female monarch butterfly apart and the anatomy of a butterfly.
