ATL Hip-Hop fusion Band Heavy Mojo is back in a big way with a new video "Bright Lights Big City". After their performance with ATL acts Hollyweerd and Vonnegut last night, it looks like Mojo fans might have some more new music to be excited about.

“TRIMM meets SMKA is the second project in the “(dope artist) meets SMKA” series, and follows the successful release of Mr. Falyon meets SMKA, in June 2009. The project showcases TRIMM, who has been making waves in the music industry for a couple years and is arguably one of the best lyricists in the Atlanta. TRIMM meets SMKA includes 9 tracks, two of which are produced by Battery 5, while the other 7 are produced by SMKA. It'd be wrong of me to say he's based in Atlanta because Novel is one of those industry insider/behind the scenes/formerly signed to two major labels acts that has been around the block more than once and has lived in both L.A. and Atlanta for extended periods. As far as I know he's a Cali kid. Like many musicians, however, he made his home here in Atlanta and has been writing and producing for artists behind the scenes with the likes of Dallas Austin for some years.

This is a new offering from him. Check it out. The guy is a talented wordsmith and can sing, too. I always wonder how acts like this don't quite make it over the hump. How is it that he can write hits for other talents and not have a smash hit of his own?
The music industry is a funny place.

I've heard the name Travis Porter floating around for awhile and had no real idea who that was other than an up and coming Hip Hop act in Atlanta with a great deal of buzz on the streets and on the internet. I didn't check out the music because the people I know in the know weren't talking about TP so I let them slip from my mind.

I finally headed over to TP's myspace today. It turns out they are a group. It isn't one MC. I see what they're doing. They've got a mixtape with the hottest street rapper in Atlanta today, Wacka Flocka Flame, and they have over one million listens to one of their signature songs.

I see how it can be catchy, etc. It's honestly not my kind of music and I hope for them nothing but the best. Here's the kicker, though: They know what they are doing.

I can't tell you how long the uber dumbed down trap -rap game that Wacka, Gucci and OJ are apart of will last. Or it it will be valid once TI is back on the scene. If snap and crunk are any indicator, it's in the last 2 years of it's 5 year run.

But THIS? This is perhaps the best of the chimera project of melding Atlanta's Hipster look/vibe/aesthetic, which has been proven to generate solid internet buzz, with the street swag movement in Atlanta of the past 2 years.

It can work. I think it'll get it's 5 year run, too. The staying power behind movements like this, as always, are the lyrics. That's the meat on the bone. They don't have it.

Danceable pop tunes? Check. Cool, "Different" (certainly for the hood) look? Check. But at the end of the day, it's just not that deep. They might get their 15 minutes, their 5 years but here's why I think they might have a better chance than any hipster act CURRENTLY trying to get money in Atlanta to get their moment in the sunshine:

THEIR PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:

I've said it time and time again. If you aren't performing at REAL, AUTHENTIC Atlanta clubs, if you aren't doing neighborhood and highschool shows, if you aren't reaching the PEOPLE? You're internet buzz might get you internet famous, but you won't sell one record and today both indie and major labels aren't looking to make style points. They need to move UNITS.

A star has to to be able to make it through trials and tribulations. They have to endure. Having charisma, good stage presence, marketing, planning and mic skills are only part of the solution set to success as an MC in today's marketplace. In Saturday's New York Times reporter JON CARAMANICA captures who stood out and why in arguably one of the most important Hip Hop bills during the CMJ conference on the stage of B.B. Kings in Times Square.

Does this mark a changing of the guard? Who can tell? I hope so. Atlanta has more to say and can say it much better with rappers like Alleyboy, Young Dro and Pill than they ever will with Gucci & OJ the Juiceman (who was booed off of the stage), I feel.

There are messages, concepts and perceptions reinforced by the dumbed down aesthetic of what's flooding our airwaves and ipods today.

As an Atlanta representer I had to ask myself if I take exception to them booing OJ, do I feel that this was his Outkast "The south got something to say" moment in defiance to the New York establishment? No. That wasn't New York booing him. That was Hip Hop booing him.

The people that go to CMJ are those that are interested in what's next, what's overlooked, and what is great about MUSIC in general. These are fans of music that travel from all over the world to NYC for a few days of music immersion in a way not possible anywhere else like it is in New York City.

Who survived the test? Pill did. Why? Because at the end of the day skills still matter. One can be authentic, true to the "street", black-bottom ATL and still be a wordsmith. Thank God for that.
