Water Source Heat Pumps

Water Source Heat Pumps are one of the most efficient ways to heat a building because of the way they are able to move heat energy from where it is not needed to where it is needed.

The Water Source Heat Pump works in a similar way to a ground source heat pump, with the main difference that instead of extracting the heat from the ground, the heat is being extracted from a source of water.

An advantage of using a water source heat pump is that water has a much more stable seasonal temperature than air and is therefore more efficient.

A water source heat pump works by pumping water up from beneath the ground and then extracting the heat from it to heat the home.

Alternatively it can work by extracting water above the ground and then extracting the heat from it.

The costs of installing a water source heat pump can vary greatly depending on the location of the water. If the water is deep beneath the ground then this can increase cost. Materials such as pipework can also affect the cost of installation.

However, the cost savings of extracting this form of energy also need to be taken into account during the decision process.

Of course, the main thing that needs to be considered when thinking about using a water source heat pump is whether there is water in the immediate area.

Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

Swimming Pool Heat Pumps work by taking warmth out of the surrounding air by compressing a gas and transferring this heat to the water in the swimming pool.

Pool and spa water circulates through the Swimming Pool Heat Pump the same way as the other heaters, but does not pump any more heat than any other design of pool and spa heater.

A compressor in the Swimming Pool Heat Pump exerts pressure on a gas, usually Freon, and generates heat. The water is circulated through a heat exchanger that is warmed by contact with the hot gas. The gas cools from contact with the water and is recompressed and heated to start the cycle all over again.

The Freon used in Swimming Pool Heat Pumps is a nonflammable, noncorrosive gas, which makes it suited to this application. Freon does not contain the chlorine component of the Flourocarbon that makes it environmentally hazardous.

Though expensive, Swimming Pool Heat Pumps are energy efficient and last a long time, meaning that the initial outlay can be reclaimed in power savings and longevity.

Because they rely in part on taking warmth from the air, the hotter the surrounding temperature, the better and quicker they work.

Many people think of pool heaters as unnecessary expense. But in cooler areas of the country, a heater lets you open the pool earlier in the spring and keep it open longer into the fall.

In hot regions, a pool heater may allow you to use your pool almost year round. Also, the Swimming Pool Heat Pump runs at considerably less cost than many people would think.

What is a Ground Source Heat Pump

A Ground Source Heat Pump is, as its name suggests, a form of extracting heat from the ground. Basically, the earth acts as a natural source of solar heat storage. The Ground Source Heat Pump is an electrically powered system to extract this stored heat from the earth.

How does a Ground Source Heat Pump work?

A Ground Source Heat Pump works by pumping either water or anti-freeze through holes drilled in the ground. In the winter, the fluid extracts the warmth from the earth to provide heat or hot water for a home. In the summer it can extract warm air from the home into the ground, thus cooling the home.

There are two fundament types of Ground Source Heat Pumps:

Closed Loop Systems - The fluid is pumped around pipes in a continuous manner.
Open Loop Systems - The fluid does its job of transferring the heat and is then discharged into the open. Of course, due to environmental issues, it is not suitable to use anything apart from water for the Open Loop Ground Source Heat Pump.

The setup of the Ground Source Heat Pump is affected by factors such as ground formation and available land at the site of installation.
