We are now in week 3 of the new year, and if you are like most people, you are hoping for great things in this new year!

My question is, have you made room for them? Have you created space for all of that abundance that you are hoping for? It might sound obvious, but if your filing cabinet, desk, life, etc., are full of ‘clutter’, there is no room for all of that great stuff that you want to come your way!

I remember years ago I was in a small coaching group and I kept saying “something is in my way”. My coach finally said (in complete frustration!) “who cares what it is! Just climb over it, under it or around it and GO!!!”

I finally figured out what “it” was, but the point is that we all have things that ‘get in our way’.

I used to be a perpetual planner. I was great at the planning and idea creating!

Ideas don’t mean squat without ACTION!

I listen to and love a lot of authors and speakers and whether it is Andy Andrews or Anthony Robbins, every single one talks about this in some form or fashion (that should tell you something:)

You have probably created goals for the new year.

Have you created ACTION STEPS to reach them?

This is critical!

Have you ever made a list of goals only to come to the end of the year barely even able to remember what they were because you had not seen or thought about them since you shoved the list in your drawer? *HAND RAISED HERE*

This year, I encourage you to do the following:

• Break your goals up into categories. Mine are:

• Personal
• Health
• Family
• Professional
• Financial
• Home
• Education

• Put your goals in categories
• List the steps to achieve each goal
• Look at these steps. Are there areas that will trip you up? For example, do you not know how to do XYZ? Then add this to your list: “Learn how to ______” or “Find someone to _____________”
• Put those steps on your calendar!
• Keep them where you will see them everyday! (mine are on my office wall, in my journal and on the fridge)
• Once you know what your goals are and the steps needed to reach them, then you have to MOVE!

Nothing happens without action!

Sometimes we just need a good swift kick in the butt! So, consider yourself kicked!

One of the biggest frustrations that I hear from businesses is that it is difficult to message “fans” on facebook.  While it frustrates me at times too, I have also recognized that most people don’t want more SPAM, and so that is probably a good thing. No business owner ever thinks that their messages are spam, but “spam is in the eye of the beholder”.

In fact, I read my facebook mail in the morning before I read my email for that very reason. Although I have a great SPAM filter (gmail), I still get 130 or so emails per day, and most of them come through during the night.

Many will rejoice however, to hear that facebook is experimenting with business pages being able to email fans. This is being rolled out as a test, but may be available soon. According to The Next Web, this is what you will see:

If this does become available for all users, it will be imperative for you to understand how to use it, otherwise you will not only tick people off, but you will lose fans. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before sending an email:

1. Ask yourself if the message helps them or only you

2. Does it have value for them?

3. Would you pick up the phone to convey the message?

4. Are you sending this message because you believe they will want to receive it, or because YOU want them to?

5. If it cost you money to send it, would you send it?

Remember, most people who ‘liked’ your page did so before this was available. Unlike regular email, they didn’t ‘opt in’ to receive FB mail from you and they will easily “unlike” you if you abuse it.

 

As you may know, I am a big ‘fan’ of facebook.
Someone recently made a snarky comment about the time that I spend on facebook.
I admit that I laughed, and rolled my eyes (believe me, considering the context, it was worthy of an eye roll:)

First, I will say that things are never as they appear. I do spend a lot of time online.
I don’t play games, etc. I use the time online to connect with others, and learn.

(I am also an avid reader)

I don’t spend time watching TV. Statistics show that the average person watches 6 hours of TV a day! Ironically, if you ask people if they do that, they ALWAYS insist that they don’t! (most do, track how much time YOU do:)

I have started watching more movies with my boys, but I still prefer FB to TV.

Why?

• TV is passive, FB is active.
• Most people use TV as a passive mindless “something to do” exercise.
• Through facebook on the other hand, you can connect with other people.
• I believe connecting is important!

Here are the benefits to facebook as I see it:

• I find/read great articles via facebook (I am a constant learner;)
• Giving to others: commenting on and engaging with others is a gift – for them, and YOU!
• Life is about the connections that we make! Connecting with & interacting with others is a great value to both parties!
• We often don’t get the opportunity to connect with people who ‘get us’ IRL. Via facebook, we can connect with people that we otherwise couldn’t or wouldn’t.

I will also add that over 70% of my business came through facebook last year!

I just finished reading this phenomenal book!

The Right Questions is a short (& affordable) book packed with some powerful and thought provoking information that anyone can use in life.

All to often we just sort of meander through life, go through the motions.

Have you read this book? If you haven’t, read it! It will inspire you!

Here is a snippet that I particularly liked (although I have to admit that I think I highlighted the entire book!

“We are afraid that life won’t bring us what we want or think we need.

We fear that if we try and fail, it will hurt too much.

Or maybe we’re afraid that if we do succeed we’ll feel guilty and won’t be able to handle it.

We fear that if we stand up and claim our piece of the world, we will be rejected or abandoned by our friends and family.

We fear that our lives will become unmanageable and we will lose control.

Any time we do something that is inconsistent with our past – that is different from who we’ve been or who we think ourselves to be – we are confronted with our fears.

Yet if we continue to make choices from a place of fear, we will miss vital opportunities and guarantee ourselves a future that is no more than a continuation of our past.

If we are really honest with ourselves, we will see that many of our actions and choices arise out of the fear that losing what we already have – even if we don’t like it- will be worse than not getting what we want.

Our fear drives us to take a job we don’t want because we are afraid we won’t have enough money.

Our fear may keep us in a dead-end relationship because we’re scared that we won’t find anyone else, or it may lead us to make choices that dishonor ourselves because we are afraid that another opportunity won’t come our way.

When fear is in control of our choices, we are left with few options.

Fear fuels self doubt and internal criticism.

Fear destroys dreams and exterminates possibilities.

Here are the Questions:

• Will this choice propel me toward an inspiring future or keep me Stuck in the past?
• Will this choice bring me long-term fulfillment or short term gratification?
• Am I standing in my power or trying to please another?
• Am I looking for what is right or what is wrong?
• Will this choice add to my life force or rob me of my energy?
• Will I use this situation as a catalyst to grow & evolve or to beat myself up?
• Does this choice Empower or Disempower me?
• Is this an act of Self-love or Self-sabotage?
• Is this an act of Faith or Fear?
• Am I choosing from my divinity or my humanity?

 

We are all busy doing a lot of things this time of year. Make the time to be ready for the new year too!

In addition to doing my 30 day challenge, be sure to do these 12 things too (you will feel GREAT on January 1!)

1. Take advantage of getting spruced up for those holiday parties and get a new picture of yourself (even if you don’t like having your picture taken or don’t use one for business, you have loved ones who will appreciate it one day:)

2. Take advantage of ‘down time’ and spend a little time online learning how to better use tools like email, social media, etc.

3. Clean out your inboxes! Email and physical ‘inboxes’ make us feel overwhelmed! Put those boxes in front of you (or your laptop) and sort as you watch Christmas specials on TV to make it less painful

4. Get a 2012 Calendar and calendar those big goals for next year! You will triple your chances of achieving them!

5. Create a vision board. Break out the scissors and glue and old magazines (or print pics from your computer) and create a collage of the things that you want to be, do and have. Hang it on a wall where you will see it daily!

6. Create new file folders for the new year.

7. Sort Records and Receipts. Don’t wait for the new year! Go ahead and start sorting for tax time now. Again, make it less painful by getting comfy on the couch to do it. Get some folders/envelopes and do a bit each night.

8. Update your website! Make sure your website is ready for the new year too! Make sure you have the keywords that you need, social connect links, etc.

9. Update/sort your contacts. I recommend sorting business contacts by those who are raving fans, those who have sent you referrals, those who haven’t, etc. Calendar contacting them with frequency based on what category they are in.

10. Protect those things that matter! Collect photos and documents, etc that have great value to you and put them in a safe deposit box, or fireproof box.

11. Print pictures that have built up in your computer and put them in a small album. Again, this can be done while watching tv, etc.

12. Get a backup drive of some sort and back up all of your files, photos, etc. It only takes one tiny little virus to cause a big heartache!

 

We are now in December, and closing in on the end of the year.
For many people this is a reason to rejoice! I have talked to SO many people who are eager to move on to 2012!

I am not a big fan of “New Years Resolutions” because in many ways they have almost become a joke. We have set and broken them so many times that I am convinced that our brains subconsciously see them as a joke too.
I do believe in setting goals, however.

If you want to travel somewhere, you need to know your desired destination. There may be detours along the way, and you may not be able to see the entire route from where you are now, but you have to know where you want to ‘end up’.

Often times we just know that ‘we don’t want to be here’. We spend a lot of time doing a lot of things, but planning our lives in any significant way often doesn’t happen.

It is my intention to spend the next 30 days evaluating where I am, what I want to be different, where I want to be next year, and [at least] a path to get there.

Like any ‘trip’, there may be roadblocks, detours, etc., but if you don’t know where you want to end up or don’t move in the right direction, getting there will never happen!

I have read and heard about ‘the valleys’ of life twice in the past month, so I thought I should write about it.
I was in church not too long ago and the Pastor talked about being in the mountains at one time and as he stood on top of one mountain, he looked off in the distance at another. As he looked at the larger mountain, he thought “I want to be THERE!” As he pondered this, it occurred to him that in order to ‘get there’, he would have to go through the valley in between the two.

What a great metaphor for life and business! So often we want to be at the top of the mountain. We find ourselves atop many mountains during our lifetimes. We often find ourselves in a few valleys too.

In the book The Final Summit by Andy Andrews, a number of iconic historic figures talked about going through ‘valleys’ in their own lives.

The valleys are necessary.

While we often perceive the valleys as a ‘bad thing’, they aren’t.

• They give us the opportunity to rest and regroup.
• They give us new perspective.
• They are lush and green.

In fact, the top of mountains are often cold and barren and rocky!
The view is amazing however, and the sense of accomplishment is rewarding and thrilling.

Both places have value. Wherever you are, enjoy where you ARE and appreciate the value in both places.

 

I’m not sure why this came to me today, but I felt compelled to right this nonetheless.
People are all different.
Some people need to feel important, others need to feel smart, etc.
The truth is, we are all unique in our own way.
We are each given gifts and talents that others do not have.
We are born worthy of all of the great things that life has to offer, and we are all beautiful in our own unique way.
If you take the time to look for it, you will see beauty in everyone. Try it!
Even that little old lady in the drugstore…she has beautiful eyes, or hair, or something.

When you look for beauty, you will find it. Start with yourself!
Look in the mirror and say this out loud:

“I am deserving, worthy and beautiful”

If it is difficult, do it a few times.
How does it make you feel?
