An Unusual Piece (for me)

This Really is a Different style than I usually do. It was kind of an accident or maybe divine intervention in the form of a wee lad.

I have a box of chain. I don't use a lot of chain so I'll pick up a package for a specific project and the rest goes into the box. Occasionally I'll pick up a grab bag of assorted chain, if it's a good deal, most of which goes into the box.

Well the little guy dumped the box all over my kitchen table.

As I was putting it away I couldn't help but notice a couple really shiny pieces.

This part was deconstructed from another necklace that didn't quite work. (That's just part of the creative process) I had used part of it on my daughters Home Coming jewelry, last year.

This part was left over; the six charms on the hammered link

The wire wrapped bead chain was actually part of a grab bag. I loved it but didn't know what to do with it since it's only about 6 inches long.

The oval and circle links were part of a jewelry making kit I had bought my daughter a few years ago. I've come to the conclusion that she's never going to love making jewelry as much as I do.

(But she does love to wear it!)

I originally pulled it all together to form a bracelet. It was so cute on the table.

But when I put it on, the wrapped bead clusters hung too long, distorted the form and got in the way. So I added a longer chain and made it a necklace.

The toggle is on the side, just to be different. I think it kind of adds to the charm.

It was fun to make because it came together so magically but I'm not sure if it's something I'll do a lot of.

I've been working on

it's pretty much finished but I feel it really needs fringe on the bottom.

I have one more strand of the crackled glass beads and silver bead caps so I think I'll use those with seed beads and maybe some hematite beads (The gray rounds in the beadwork)

I love how this turned out!

Makes my heart thump a little harder :)

Friday Five @ The Beach

Happy Friday! It's a long holiday weekend here in the States and while a lot of people are vacationing, we're not. Hubby's new job requires him to work this weekend so I'll be playing with beads and clay and kids. Although what I really want to do is spend a day at the Beach.

We like going to the Indiana Dunes National Park. Spend a couple hours on the Beach and then hike through the woods, taking lots of pictures, and picnic somewhere along the way.

So This week's theme is a Day at the Beach!

I have a beach bag. It's a big red canvas bag (sand shakes out easier). I keep the beach stuff in it so it's ready to go at a moments notice. Before I met the hubby, I kept it in the trunk of my car. Rhodonite set - The Geeky Stuff I Love about Stones

This is one of those pieces that has stories. The creation of the piece and because I love the lore, I've accumulated information about the stone, Rhodonite.

The set started with the bracelet. I wanted to use the purple-ish heishi beads that I've had in my stash for a long time. I was playing with Right angle weave and realized they worked well with the matte gray and pink inside color seed beads I had.

I secured the weave with the last of my pearl seed beads. I was cutting it close and had to search through my white soup mix* to finish the bracelet.

I had plenty of the purple left so I figured I could make a necklace too. However since I exhausted my pearl seed beads I opted to use glass pearls. I have plenty, all different sizes. They came in a lot of broken jewelry my mom had given me a few years ago.

*Bead Soup is a mix of leftover beads to be used in freeform creations. Every beader has at least one soup mix. I have several. Warm colors, cool colors, blacks, whites, and browns.

So I finished the necklace and decided it needed a pendant. I was looking through my stash for something gray or black.You have no idea how excited I was when I found this Rhodonite cab that I forgot I had. The black veining in the dusty pink stone was a great compliment to the black veining in the dusty purple heishi beads and because I used the pink inside color seed beads, it blended so well. It's one of those serendipitous moments.

So I've bezeled the cab and I'm attaching it to the necklace one night when my TalullahBell wanders out of bed for the umpteenth time.

Her: whatchadoin?
Me: Finishing this necklace, get in bed.
Her: do you need any help?
Me: No, get in bed.
Her: Do you even know what you're doing?
Me: Um, Yes. Get Back in Bed
Her: Well, 'cause, I could help...I know what to do..
Me:*gives her the angry stare*

Her: Okay, well If you need any help, I'll be in my room trying to figure out how to go to bed!

Ya, that child!

So now on to the awesome geeky stuff I love about natural stones.

Rhodonite.

The name comes from the Greek word rhodon which means rosy or possibly the Celtic word rhod meaning wheel. It's a 6 on the Mohs hardness scale and can be found all over the world. It's pretty strong and has been used as a carvings material for centuries.

It's a calming stone, associated with the heart chakra. Carrying it or wearing it encourages a sense of well-being, keeping your mind calm and helping you to stay focused and resolved by patiently weighing your options. It keeps you calm in dangerous or high stress situations.

It promotes self-love

It increases confidence, self esteem, self worth and energy levels both physical and mental. It can help to heal those emotional wounds and traumas, as well as aid in the healing of physical wounds and detoxifying the body.

(I thought it was interesting that it's pink and I've always associated pink with self- love.)

Magickally - it's element is earth and fire and is used in spells to promote self-love, peace and repel confusion and doubt.

it's Zodiac sign is Tauras and Aries.

Folklore states that this stone was given to travelers to protect them and would make their heart race if danger was imminent. Russian parents believes the eagles would carry the stones to their nests up in the mountains and therefore placed the stones in cribs so that their children would gain the freedom the eagles had.

Fun stuff! I do know I'll have to get some more if I'm going to make the Healing dolls.

Happy Friday! Is Everyone gearing up for the weekend?

It'll be an eventful one here at the Haven.

I've scheduled a one-on-one with my daughters friend who want to make jewelry. I've offered to show her a few techniques and see where it takes her!

Then Sunday is the BIG DAY!

It's my 10th anniversary (of my 29th Birthday) So the Kiddos and I will be hanging out in the yard and being silly!

I suppose I should have found patriotic wares to showcase this week but I wasn't in the mood, What I have are some really Awesome pieces!

Decorating with Song lyrics is awesome!

Years ago I painted the lyrics to Drops of Jupiter in my Celestial Bathroom.

This is even better because first its AEROSMITH! and second, it's a metal wall hanging so it moves from room to room and place to place. I lost my celestial bathroom with the divorce and the ex painted over the lyrics :(

The lyrics themselves are the kind of positive affirmation you want to be looking at everyday.

Lovely Blessings

Well it's been an eventful week here at the Haven.

We got new furniture, It was much needed and I am incredibly grateful!

The old loveseat had a pull out bed but no mattress so we used old couch cushions to fill in the space.

The recliner was broken. The side panel bolt was bent and we couldn't fix it. So the side panel leaned out at a 45 degree angle.

I was almost embarrassed when I put it on the curb and called the city to haul it away.

Here's a shot of the kiddo's playing x box on the new loveseat. The chair in the corner is where I find myself hangin out most the time. Great for reading, surfing and if I pull out the tray table, beading!

Best of all is that Eric and I can cuddle- up and watch movies again :)

We also replaced our dining room set. The old one was laminate on particle board, it was warping and wobbly and three of the chairs were falling apart. This set only came with 4 chairs so we kept the other stable chairs.

I love my new furniture. (Ya, I know, everyone loves the new stuff they get) I find myself cleaning a bit more thoroughly. I think what feels the best is that by getting rid of the old furniture, I was eliminating stagnant and maybe even negative energy.

Okay, enough about my blessings, however I am feeling a bit rambly - We do have a habit of hanging on to things far past their expiration date.

For Example:My automatic drip coffee maker died in a puff of smoke a few weeks ago. I haven't replaced it yet. Now I boil water in the tea kettle and pour it over the grounds.

I'm working on my Master in Efficiency.

I believe in Recycle, Reuse.

I give our salvageable clothes and household goods to Salvation Army.

I recycle according to the city's requirements.

I even have a compost pile on the back of our property.

So suffice to say, if I can reuse something I will. Such as my hubby's old jeans. He wears them until they're not decent (for some reason he blows out the back pockets)

I've decided to use part of the pant legs as the purse with Ultra suede as the lining.

I was thinking about making a few denim cuff bracelets too. We'll see if my ADD lets me get that far.

Remember this beadwork, The Hamas Hand? I did this a couple years ago and didn't know how to finish it. I'm so excited!

I'll be working on this for the next couple days.

Sunday the 30th is my 10th anniversary of my 29th Birthday and according to my daughter Beth, I have plans. I'm not sure what but we'll take pictures:)

Very pretty necklace and a very accommodating shop owner. I love that Bri has included the metaphysical properties of the natural stones in her descriptions.

Stones themselves have energies that science is just beginning to understand. Carrying the stones or wearing them in jewelry help to balance your own energies and encourage you to take on the properties of that stone. An excellent tool for self improvement work.

I also think its great that she's taking the time to charge the pieces with her own positive healing energies. It's something I'm working on for my own pieces.

This is so cool! I've not seen a crystal ball in black.

(I have a traditional clear crystal ball, made from quartz crystal.) The listing goes into details explaining the properties of Obsidian, the basis of scrying and the importance of the sphere.

I've never quite got the hang of scrying. I blame my ADD but really it's probably because I'm more fond of my cards as a form of divination

They offer an number of different stones and include their properties and general uses.

I love that they offer the stones in raw form. I find that stones are a lot like food, the less processed they are the more natural energy they offer. Although I do use smooth stones for my jewelry.

I have an affinity for amethyst. I keep one in with my Tarot cards and have used them in amulet bags and healing dolls when I was working to improve my intuition.

My new Favorite Charm Bracelet. My favorite part is the Frosted Glass Free-trade beads from Africa.

It's based in antique brass metal so it looks all vintage and Victorian.

So Pretty, I really like the color combination!

Green and Gold Adjustable Ring

I love the Cab on this one.

It's faceted and catches the light so at one angle it's green and at another its gold.

I haven't got it listed yet. It's ready to go but best business practice states it's better to list/renew over time as opposed to all at once, to keep your shop in the first pages of the search listings.

This song as playing in my head today as I spent a couple a couple hours this morning in my yard. Salvaging what's left of the Honeysuckle. I'm guessing my neighbor decided to rip it off the fence although it was technically from my yard and really wasn't in her way.

Anyway. the whole situation made me long for country living, where I can grow what I want, where I want and neighbors too far away to bother me. Eventually we'll get there!

Friday Five - Bath and Body Edition

This week's picks were inspired by my awesome hubby.

Last year in an effort to improve the quality of our life, he started cooking from scratch. No more boxed or frozen foods. We discovered that not only is this healthier for us (no additives or preservatives) our food tastes better and it saves us money!

So this year we've ventured out to see what else we can save money on by searching for home and body products we can make ourselves. I've made my own laundry soap and dishwasher detergent. We buy vinegar, baking soda and olive oil in bulk.

So Eric was harvesting some Mint that I planted for his Greek recipes and asks me,

"Think we can make essential oils with this?"

To which I replied, "I don't know. Google it"

(Because that's what we do now, in the 21rst century)

We found an infusion method that he's trying. Other methods are too complicated.

Well that sent me looking for essential oils on Etsy. I know they can be pretty pricey depending on the oil and I know I want a few different scents for upcoming projects. I was just delighted when I found this Shop

Lavender was #1 on my list but they also have Tea Tree oil.

They offer natural soaps and therapeutic lotions, salves and lipbalms.

This is a shop I will be frequenting! Essential oils are used in lots of home remedies and home made cleaning products.

So While I'm perusing through Etsy on my hunt for oils and natural products, my Dear Husband decides to start a new movie series and pops Dark Knight in the blue ray player.

Shortly after the movie starts I stumble across this

I disturbed him during his movie, but I don't believe in coincidences.

I love this shop! Their bar soaps are bright colorful, creative and have really fun names.

They also offer body washes, sugar scrubs (LOVE) shampoo, conditioners, lotions and a lot more.

I've read up on how to make soap - It's a lot more complicated than I willing to commit to, So I'll leave that to the soap makers and enjoy the fruits of their labors!

Vegan Deodorant - ShowerTreatSoaps

I'm not Vegan, I do respect peoples right and choice and I'm happy to share this shop that offers a number of vegan soaps and body products for my vegan readers.

This deodorant is really exciting.

I have a friend who recently had a mastectomy and it's come to my attention that commercial deodorants are the culprit for many forms of breast cancer. It's because the aluminum and parabens in the product are absorbed into the skin and lymph nodes. I've been wondering for the last couple months, "where do you get paraben free deodorant"

while trying to cut back on my use of regular stuff without offending people ;)

Now I found it! Thank you!

Calendula Skin Ointment - PureIntentions

Here's another product that I have to get.

Years ago when My oldest daughter was younger, she suffered from really sensitive skin.

She would get an itchy rash from anything. I started giving her fish oil, which helped but she would still have outbreaks so I kept hydrocortisone cream on hand.

Itch cream, we call it and the other kids would use it too for mosquito bites and other irritants. I still have it in the first aid kit. But I admit, in the back of my head, I know it's not good for them and the guilt battle begins. Do I let them scratch until they bleed or soothe it with a chemical?

Now I have a healthy option!

Okay I just had to add these because they're so much fun

Made from goats milk and glycerin, they come in different colors and scents

My little ones love bath time and this shop has all kinds of fun soaps as well as bath bombs, nail polish and more! They have some soaps that look like popsicles but I know my kids, they'd try to eat them!

Just for fun, I'm including a picture of me and my beach hair!

Nope haven't been to the beach yet, Lake Michigan will be too cold until mid July.

I found a recipe for a spray that'll cut the frizz and give me that

'I've been at the beach all day' look!

Mix together 1 Table spoon each:
coconut oil, sea salt, and hair gel into 1 cup of warm water and put in a spray bottle - Saturate hair and let dry!

It's softer than using just hair gel and smells great! I did notice Sophie's hair feeling a bit gritty but she had used it like a dozen times today. She's six *shrug*

Little Poppet dressed in Green

The past couple days I've been working on a special little doll.

She's green and gold and stuffed with special ingredients, including cinnamon and basil

mmmmm....

She's a prototype, created to encourage prosperity.

The idea is to create a physical symbol to hold on to and focus on while we do the everyday things that will create our reality.

Things like working, saving and debt elimination.

Inside her, I have placed coins (money) magnets (attraction) and a quartz crystal to amplify the other symbols.

Basil and cinnamon are traditionally used to attract wealth and they smell awesome!

If she turns out well I may whip up a few for the shop.

She's got green stones and gold word beads that say, 'power, change, inspire'

The words seemed appropriate for encouraging prosperity and abundance...

I hope to have her finished by this months

Super Moon on June 23rd

It she turns out well I may do another in green.

I was also thinking pink with rose petals to encourage Self Love

Pastel blues with lavender to encourage inner peace.

Orange with a citrus scent to encourage creativity.

This is the coolest piece of glass art that I've seen in a long time!

It measures 6 x 4 inches and is created by layers and layers of melted glass.

I would love to learn how to play with glass (even if hubby think I'm too scattered to mess with the torch)!

I couldn't resist! Yes it's another pair of barefoot sandals but these are so fun!

They're full of colorful beads and charms. And I love the Etsy handle, HulaTallulah. I call my girls Tallulah when they're in their free-spirited-wild-woman mode. This shop just lives up to my description, everything in there is creative, colorful and full of great energy.

There's just something about ceramic jewelry that pulls me in and makes my heart yearn. It might be the earth and fire that are needed to create the pieces. I'm not sure. I love this one though. I love the way it hold the color, ceramics always have a beautiful way of carrying colors. The 'wisdom' charm is a wonderful touch. June is my favorite month!

This is what I'm working on now.

I sold my favorite charm bracelet a while ago so I've decided to make a new favorite.

This one has these awesome green glass beads from Africa, some rose quartz and glass pearls.

Should be finished in a day or so!

This one has these great pink dyed lace agate beads and glass pearls. I even made matching earrings

This is pearl and frosted drop beads. I fell in love with them!

This one I'm super excited about. I made the bracelet then saw that I had enough of the purple heishe beads to make a necklace. As I put it on to see how it fit, I thought "This needs a pendant". Fast forward a couple days and I'm looking for beads for the charm bracelet when I come across this rhodonite cab!

Perfect!

It'll be finished in a couple days!

The finished pieces are ready for an overcast day to be photographed and then listed.

Monday's Music - Carry On by Fun

I'm not into music like I was when I was younger but I still listen to the radio and pick up the chorus line pretty quickly.

This song has really been resonating with me.

We've hit some tough times here at the Haven. A transition period, so to speak. Which logically I understand the necessity, like a controlled burn in a nature preserve. Clear away in order to bring forth a new growth.

Just the same the process of going through it is scary, overwhelming, frustrating....

But we just press on...day by day... and eventully these tough times get easier and life becomes easy to enjoy again!

Until then, I'll be singing this song!

Summer Fun on Etsy!

Yes Summer is here. My favorite season. My tomatoes are planted and my roses are about to bloom.

I've been in that summer mood lately,

painting birdhouses and rocks with my daughter,

wearing tank tops and sundress, so naturally I've been looking at summer wear on Etsy.

I've had this in my favorites for a while.

To me, it says summer walks through the forest preserve. Its all earthy and green and rustic.

Yes this is the season for bare feet and sandals, so this is the season that we dress up our ankles.

Maybe it was my hippie mom, but macrame and hemp jewelry just completely remind me of summer.

So much fun on this one! I love the colors and Turtles are awesome!

I would so wear these to the beach or a pool party. Etsy is filled with these barefoot sandals but this is my favorite!

I taught myself to crochet when I was twenty and soon moved onto thread crochet. I don't have the patience for it now but I do appreciate the work! Well done!

Pink Candy Necklace set by HeathersHaven

I've been tempted to pull this set from the shelf, so to speak.

I can no longer find the pink acrylic baubles so this really is a one of a kind set and it would go great with the new pinks that are in the stores right now. (You know the ones that keep calling me)

Starfish Hair Pins by rosesandlemons

Nice and clean and crisp and summery with the sparkly starfish on the ends.

I've been looking for fun hair pins and clips because I just cut 3 inches off my layers and now my bangs don't quite stay in the ponytail.

Well that's just a tiny glimpse of what I've been looking at. I'll have more in the upcoming week.

The Importance of Being in Nature

This Memorial Day was the first day in months that neither Eric nor I had to work.

We've been doing this opposite schedule thing for a while and it has been wearing on us.

So even though it was overcast and cloudy and rainy we opted to go hiking just the same.

The kids had a blast. Sophie was allowed to romp and splash in the puddles and boy did she ever.

We looked for birds and animal prints

(of animals running as fast as they could away from her, I'm sure)

and found this uprooted tree.

Zane is a character. He's quite content to sit in the stroller and watch everything. (First kid ever!)

At one point the trail had become so flooded that we had to carry his stroller while our boots were sticking in the mud and making that suction popping noise as we walked.

Zane was cracking up laughing.

(so were we)

Eric had his camera and various lenses.

He's just recently admitted out loud that 'The Big Year' is one of his favorite movies

(yes he's getting old)

He's encouraging the kids to explore photography and Sophie was having fun with it!

Although she had more fun in the mud puddles!

For me, hiking is a necessary part of my physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being.

Before Zane was born we would go out in the winter with snow on the ground as well as in the nicer months.

And I'm sure we'll do that again in the future.

There's an energy present in nature places, wild places, that you can't feel on asphalt or in homes full of electric appliances and cool new gadgets!

I'm not saying one is better than the other.

As much as Eric and I like to fantasize about moving to a cabin in the woods and living off the land - we would SOOOOO miss our toys.

I still revel in our days in the woods.

I collect that energy, imagine in circulating through my body, healing the damaged area's and refreshing my soul.

I would bottle it up if I could but that's not how energy works.

It has to flow and so I let it.

And the refreshing, healing energy has an uncanny ability to spark my creative tendency.

We both come home from these walks with countless sketches and design ideas.

So now I'm off to put a mental image on paper and soon to beads and fibers.

I've been thinking a lot about the kind of jewelry that I make.

I have a tendency to make big bold jewelry because it's fun and creative and challenging.

However, I've discovered, it's not always practical. especially for every day/workplace environment situations.

Now I'm wondering how to tone it down with out loosing the creative challenge.

The face cab is a photocopy of a picture that's attached to the back of a clear glass flat sided stone. Like the kind you buy for fish tanks and flower arrangements.

It has worked really well for a number of pieces.

A Small Glimpse and the Trouble with Toddlers

I had a Bunch of Pretties all set up to share with you but for some reason I can't seem to load them up here.

I installed updates today so that probably locked me out of my picture files.

GRRRRRR.....

I'll fight with the computer tomorrow. Right now I want to show you this:

It's not the best picture, I apologize.

I used my phone camera.

But it's a glimpse into what I've been working on. Finished this actually, but it's not going up for sale.

My oldest daughter bought me the pendant for Mother's day

(The crab is my Sun sign)

so I made this for me. It was an exercise in RAW (right-angle weave). I haven't used the weave in anything longer than a bracelet and wanted to see how it would work as a necklace. I need to tweak my technique but it's promising!

I also made earrings to match.

My plan is to use this weave as a necklace for bead embroidered pendants once I get it right.

I like the weave, it works quickly and can use larger sized beads.

I've been working on more bracelets using different kinds of beads and pearls. The weaving is nice because it's a more compact project than an embroidered piece and I can move it around with me.

Sophie has just recently dubbed her baby brother Zane the Pain, because he's into everything including my beads

I have to be able to hide my tray at a moments notice!

I told her we should write stories about him and all his antics. Maybe it'll be a good summer project for us!

Hamas Hand - an UnFinished Object

Oh My! I totally forgot about this piece!

This was so fun to make, but I had no idea what to do with it when it was finished. It was too big to be a pendant (my original plan) so it went into a box and was forgotten. Temporarily of course! It's not backed or edged but the bead work was a joy and it turned out so well.

I think I know what to do with it now! stay posted to see!

And speaking of beautiful non-wearable Beadwork, Let me share some Amazing pieces Created by members of the Guild! Theses ladies are Talented.

Kaleidoscope Music box created by lindemel is an inventive and creative use of bead embroidery. It reminds me of Renaissance Europe and the Crown Jewels. Can't you picture this in some Fine Lady's collection of Pretties?

Madonna and Child wall hanging by EsmereldaStudios is a classic iconic piece of art complete with the golden frame. I'm a big fan of the Madonna and Child Art so this is on my 'want' list. I know how much time went into creating this and it amazes me.

Bee Art by CCBeadwork is another example of using Bead Embroidery as a Wall Display. This photo shows the details of her stitching going in concentric circles which i find fascinating! First how did she keep the big picture in mind, managing the details of the shading and highlighting and second how did she keep her circles so neat!

Fun and Whimsy in Artsy Jewelry

So today starts my daily blogging - I can not continue living without a creative outlet.

(okay, that was a bit dramatic)

I have a few pieces to share today.

Fun, whimsical pieces that are a joy to make and even better to wear!

I love faces (obviously - doll maker) So using them in jewelry is so much fun

This piece is in my collection. Yep that's right! I am the proud owner of this fun and whimsical nature face pendant created for a swap by Sharayah for 4uidzne

The face cab, I believe was created by graphixoutpost. They makes great cabs!

I've just recently fell in love with this piece, First Frost by Sharon Edelman.

The face is ceramic and the piece is available.

Isn't she just lovely, so sweet and content! She makes a wonderful lapel pin.

And this is my Fairy Garden necklace; also available.

This one was so much fun to make. The face cab is polymer clay with blue seed bead eyes, hand sculpted by yours truely! What do you think?

Finding my Grooove!

Change is inevitable.

Six month ago I started a new job. A career. Finally, after twenty years of being primary caregiver to my children, I got the opportunity and I had to jump on it.

Unfortunately, it hasn't been what I imagined it to be

(it never really is, is it?)

(Mater in Wonderland)

I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed it or that I won't continue with it but it has opened my eyes to a number of things.

1) I need to create........in the same way that I need to breathe. I saw an art doll on etsy the other day and my heart ached. Yes, a real physical pain in my chest much akin to the sense of longing like when you miss a friend that lives 1,000 miles away.

2) I'm too idealistic to rely on straight commission. I'm more service oriented, than money oriented so I don't push to get a sale if I don't think the service will be of value. I believe in what I do and I think this would be an excellent compliment to a full time salary.

3) I regret that I'm missing so much of the little ones during these years. I walked in from work the other day to the baby squeeling, running to me yelling 'mama, mama, mama'. I didn't know he could say it! I missed it.

So, here I am. Struggling to find the balance between work and family and personal needs. The consequences of the American dream.

My amazing and wonderful husband has bitten the bullet and decided to go back to a full time salaried position as soon as he finds one.

Part of me feels guilty that I couldn't be better so he wouldn't have to but another part of me knows it's his creation and that ultimately this is part of his own soul development.

And of course I'll continue to love him through all these ups and downs. I'll cherish him openly and tell him all the things he needs to hear. And i will never forget that he swallowed his manly pride and agreed to stay home with the kids while I began my career.

I'm so lucky!
