Hey you all,

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! I guess its safe to call it that, I can't believe were already right into December! Yikes!

I'm sorry for the hiatus I took from posting. It's not that I didn't have anything to say... because I'm sure you all have noticed I'm quite the chatterbox by now. It's just that as our 2010 season comes to an end we are restructuring Heather's Hot Couture to weather the storms of our unpredictable economy. We are looking forward full of optimism for 2011, hoping for a prosperous year ahead blessed with bucks for all! We are full of gratitude because we know that our friends, clients and the cowgirls that support the equine industry will continue to find new ways to follow their passion for horses, riding and showing.

That doesn't mean these aren't challenging times for many, but if one thing's true, we are a bunch of Tough Cookies! I know horse people stick together, like family supporting each other, and creatively find ways to bend but not break under life's pressures. I want to thank all who contribute to the thousands of shows and events every year, continuing to challenge competitors and making dreams come true. We at HHC are making some BIG CHANGES! I know our choices aren't as tough as some that many of you have had to make in recent months. I've heard so many stories about skipping favorite shows to save on gas and rising show fees, and even worse, pulling horses out of training. This means smaller classes. As hard as the show industry has been hit by the down turn in our economy, we are finding smart ways of cutting back. We are spending less and buckling down for the long haul! If you still have your health and your horses, then I think you've got plenty to celebrate!

Back home from Bakersfield and back to work.......

Those new Custom By Heather horsemanship tops are finally finished - here's a look! While setting up shop on the road last week at the Central Cal Paint Horse Association's Western Paint World Show, we were baking as we finished up the last details on these two designs. I'm happy to say this new red hot HMS top sold practically from right out under the sewing machine! Love it when that happens, I guess it was love at first sight!

We enjoyed seeing some of our favorite clients and it's always fun to admire our past Customs out in the show ring! Check out Christina sparkling under the evening lights - she looks great in her CBH in the pleasure pen.

What a busy time of year it is for so many of us. Lately there is so much excitement in the air with so many shows going on. I hope all of our Quarter Horse friends are making your way home safely if you're on a long haul back from the Congress. What a fantastic event. I hope to make it out to watch next year. I know I've been trying to keep up watching the online broadcasts when I can. For everyone like me keeping it local lately, there's been lots going on too. I have some cute pics my sis recently took at the 1st annual EMO Novice Champion Invitational Quarter Horse show. This special event took place in conjunction with PCQHA'S Wine & Roses circuit. What a great idea, to honor these newer competitors' great achievements and to encourage them to pursue their future showing goals. This show was complete with beautiful buckles and red carpet treatment. We all know it's tough out there and the competition can sometimes be intimidating for newbies! This sport isn't for the weary. Being prepared and looking your best in your favorite show clothes can help set the confident tone, and if not, do your best to simile and fake it! That's what I remember about being a novice rider. I'm sure many of you can relate to feeling like a nervous nelly. Here's a look at a new novice team that we're rooting for and lately they just seem to be unstoppable!

Congratulations Kerry and Trooper on all your recent success! Big League Look, aka Tropper, and Kerry Krauter are good family friends and show buddies! We had lots of fun watching Kerry and Trooper win Reserve Champion last month in the novice am. trail at the Santa Barbra Fall Classic. Look for this team in our future Equine Chronicle Ad, they sure make a pretty picture.

I'm soo excited to be back ringside this weekend for the good old Grand National Rodeo! This is always tons of fun. I've been going since I was a little girl. This is some first rate people watching. I cant wait to see the cowboys and gals, silly clowns and of course the Rodeo Queen all decked out! Ye Ha for America's oldest sport! We're headed to San Francisco's Cow Palace for some good old-fashioned fun this weekend! Pictures of all the action to come!

Bakersfield or Bust!

I have a few pictures I wanted to share with you all from last weekend's celebration! I had a blast! As many of you may know, I spent my weekend as a bridesmaid in my good girlfriend Suzanne's Tahoe wedding. I had such a great time and felt like a princess in my ball gown as we ate, drank and danced! Even all the rainy, stormy fall weather couldn't put a damper on the party! The wedding was thankfully planned for indoors and lots of fun was had by all. The weekend was complete with the appearance of a few beautiful rainbows.

Back to work this week and we are busily working on a few new CBH horsemanship tops to take to next week's show. This is it, the last show of the season for us as Vendors. The fantastically talented Lois and Janice team will be heading south and manning our booth at the Central California Paint Horse Club's Western Paint World Show down in Bakersfield, CA. If you don't see the ladies hanging out front among our clothes, they can usually be found inside the M-BOX stitching and bitching behind the machines! Don't be shy, stop by and see us at work. We'll be stoning and sewing, working on clothes we're proud to put our label in. I hope all our great paint clients and friends plan to attend. The forecast is looking good and this show is a

We've been letting our imaginations run wild and now we're cutting into some of our favorite fabrics. I'm pretty excited about our new horsemanship tops. Can you tell! ha! ha! It's nice to take a break from the popular jackets. It feels like the big jacket trend has dominated my work for the entire last year. Horsemanship is one of my favorite classes from back in my old show days and I still love to watch this class. The level of talent I see is fantastic. The ladies who dominate this class have nothing to hide and should be nothing but proud to show off their excellent equitation. I know most of us gals are big fans of the modern untucked shirt and jacket styles that are the current look in just about every class from Pleasure to Trail. In my opinion these structured jackets are usually the best and most flattering choice for most body types. But in Horsemanship I recommend sticking with the old tuck-in tradition. The good news is the newer styles in horsemanship are often made of comfy stretchy fabric and don't include the dreaded snap crotches of the past! These thinner stretch fabrics allow for ease of movement within the desired form fitting silhouette, allowing you to focus on sitting pretty and having your best ride.

Fall in a Flash!

I love this time of year, so much excitement in the air! Our CBH Boutique items hit The Scottsdale Classic this week and today our CBH boutique is OPEN for business! I encourage all who are attending to stop by Barbara's Animals-R-Us for a close-up look and see in person our attention to detail.

Our clothes can be found under the twinkly lights in the shopping pavilion. These show styles are truly world class and look so much better in person than online. Maybe you're not quite ready for the major shows this fall, and it's never too early to start planning for next seasons goals! Inspiration and ideas for your 2011 show season wardrobe can be found everywhere.

This week's full of excitement and all about tying up loose ends! We've been busy finishing up a few last-minute sewing projects and alterations, between sketching and working with our graphics gal on our next Equine Chronicle ads. I finally squeezed in finishing a personal project..... a much overdue baby shower gift! Yea! It's finally ready for late delivery this weekend. Here's a look at what I just finished, my second ever quilt. It's far from perfect but I think four month old baby Logan won't mind. I guess better late than never, Right?

Well it's a good thing I'm not the seamstress responsible for making all our clothes, that job is reserved for the true perfectionist! ha ha! Mom! I'm just the designer with the big ideas. I'm not afraid to admit I'm not the most talented seamstress, my strengths are in other areas like stoning and styling.

This weekend between now and next week's Central Cal Paint Horse Club's Western Paint World show down in Bakersfield, California I'm also taking off to a best friend's wedding - bridesmaid duty calls! I can't wait to get all decked out in my beautiful dress and have some fun with the girls. Remember ladies, outside the horseshow world there's rarely a chance to get glammed out and pull out the bling. Until next week we are busy bees and I'm thankful to take a tiny break to have some fun with great friends.

I hope you all are enjoying the fabulous fashion shows happening this fall season. The show styles seen at the Congress and World shows set the tone and create the trends that will become the new hot looks for the 2011 season! My prediction is asymmetrical and abstract designs with very fancy colored coordinating hats will dominate and demand attention at this falls' shows and well into next season. The Santa Barbara Fall Classic!

We're just back home and had a great time at this year's PCQHA Fall Classic. This AQHA event is truly everyone's favorite show! .
I'm glad to report the show was a great success. We met so many new faces and enjoyed visiting with some old friends too

We lucked-out this show, not only did we arrive late on set-up day, but we still got the best spot! A big "Thank You" to the PCQHA vendor coordinator Lori Pabst Pfaff for letting us set-up shop next to the awards booth, across from the show photographer, the hilarious Don Trout, and beside the party area. We had lots of entertainment, because if Don wasn't out front snapping pictures he was busy reading our Cosmo magazine and commenting on all the silly steamy sex articles. We also were set up just feet from the ring, so we were on the rail to pick our favorite horses and fashions. We spent much of our time either assisting shoppers who were eagerly trying on jackets or inside the M-Box (our motor home/vendor booth) stoning and sewing away. Yep, we're a mobile sweatshop too, and we had some clothes to get finished and send on their way. Look for all our beautiful CBH Boutique items in Arizona at the AQHA Fall Classic show. Our high-end one-of-a-kinds will be exclusively sold at Animals-R-Us by our friend and owner Barbara. Visit Barbara's trailer in the pavilion area for a look at our world-class designs and get your hats shaped and blocked for a complete ring-ready look.

This week we spent the early mornings drinking lots of coffee and spectating SMS classes and admiring all the current fashions. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold! Thank goodness for no rain this year! We've experienced some soaking wet weather in the past and just about floated away. The classes were larger than expected and the overall turnout was really good. Some competitors traveled from as far as Arkansas! We were very happy to have some of the largest and most prestigious barns in the country come out to the Santa Barbara classic. Darleen Mills and her PCQHA crew did a fabulous job running this event. It seemed like there was always something fun going on. The wine and cheese party and the tri-tip BBQ were enjoyed by all after a long days work, which made the show fly by. Somehow all this fun killed our plan to get out of the show grounds and get some exercise. We did squeeze in one tiny walk in the beautiful rolling hills of the neighborhoods right outside the equestrian park. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend visiting SB on vacation or coming to Santa Barbara for a horse show, because it's a truly beautiful area of California with sites to enjoy for everyone, even if you're not horsey. One of my favorite places to visit is the Alice Keck Memorial Garden Park, a gorgeous lush botanical garden park that spreads one city block. It is one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen and free for all to enjoy.

Behind The Scenes

Hi Ya'll,

This week I wanted to share with you some pictures from behind the scenes at our recent photo shoot!

We love being a part of the Chronicle because it covers America's finest Quarter Horses, Paints, and Appaloosas all in one magazine, full of beautiful glossy pictures and articles.

The temperature definitely hit triple digits on Sunday up at Rancho Murretia Equine Center. Right as we got set up in full sun, I realized how frazzled I must have been while packing for the shoot! No baseball cap or sun hat, no cooler filled with ice and definitely no shade! Good thing I like it HOT! and David Art Wooten, our photographer, is a pro and comes prepared. His mobile office AKA silver SUV is loaded to the gills with camera equipment, lighting, props and snacks, ready for anything.

Whose idea was including the horses anyway? Oh yeah.......mine! What a challenge getting our four-legged friends to pose and look their best was! It's been a while since my show days and now I remember what it's like to have a dry mouth from kissing and clucking while tossing dirt and smacking sticks in scorching hot sun! Let's just say trying to get the horses to look at the camera and pay attention is not easy. I was the lucky one wearing a t-shirt and shades, no chaps or long-sleeved show shirts on my back.

I really can't say a big enough Thank You to our lovely clients for participating, Carley & Christina Carapinha and Sarayah and Shay Voorhees. They looked absolutely stunning wearing their CBH designs out in the sizzling summer sun. These gorgeous young ladies were so nice to break away to pose for our shoot after an early morning and a long, hot day of showing at the 7CPHA show. Despite the afternoon heat it was so much fun to see the girls sitting pretty on their silky horses all show-ring ready. What a pretty picture they are, it's enough to make me want to jump back into the saddle!

Growing up riding and showing with my sister, these sister pictures hold a special place with me as new favorites. I think they really remind me of me and my sis Robin as kids or maybe they are a reminder of great days past, those moments we hold on to and never forget. There were so many special clothes, beloved horses and small victories. Watching and designing for the younger girls and youth is definitely my favorite. I have so many ideas and can easily imagine what I would want to be wearing. It's almost like coming full circle from my past to now. Even if I'm not literally out in the ring, I feel like I'm winning knowing I helped make these clients' moments more special.

Fall's Busy Line-Up!

What a great week!

I just finished a wonderful girls-only dinner with a close friend. What a great night! I'm truly blessed to have so many wonderful girlfriends and wonderful family members in my life. We need to make these kind of girls' nights a monthly tradition. These dinners don't happen often enough and I'm definitely to blame. I'm guilty of constantly getting wrapped up in my own work and deadlines. It's been so refreshing to take time to enjoy cooking, eating, and gabbing about silly girly gossip! Finding a healthy balance is something I'm always striving for.

Recently there have been so many occasions to distract me from or inspire my work...........depending how you look at things. Lately I've been burning the midnight oil, stoning away, making up for lost time from work while having some fun. This week I joined in celebrating my Grandparent's 60th Anniversary! Wow! Congratulations! I also spent some time in lovely Napa, California (yes - famous wine country) where my sister just moved to after finally getting into nursing school! Yea! Go girl! It was also fun catching up with a great old show buddy and one of my first-ever paying clients! She gave me this great picture of her wearing one of my first CBH Horsemanship designs. Thanks Julie, I love the picture and I'm so happy to share it! It was so nice to catch up with a long lost friend!

Between all this fun I have been keeping my eye on the AQHA Select World Show - going on now!!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all our clients and local northern California girls competing this year at the Select World. Congratulations on qualifying and Best of Luck Ladies! Here are a few fun facts about this Giant AQHA event for the fabulous 50 and over riders.

- 796 horses at the show and 778 entered in western classes.

- The oldest horses competing are age 25 and there's 2 being ridden at the show.

- The oldest entrant competing at the show is 85! and her name is Suzanne Jones of New Mexico.

My Style!

Just a follow up since last weeks' craziness..... I’m feeling a lot more rested because our newest project just wrapped up! Yea! Check out the What’s New section on our site to see the latest finished stunning new CBH. I just love all the sparkle and of course have tried it on a time or two while making sure there wasn't a stone left out of place. I think this jacket is tastefully flashy yet sophisticated. Here’s a peek!

So what's my style, you ask? Personally not too exciting, but I will let you be the judge.... here are some recent snapshots of me in my everyday clothes, and a few fun dress-up ones too. I'm pretty classic, maybe even a little conservative for everyday style. I've noticed as I get older, or let’s say..... more mature as a woman, I'm drawn to quality classic pieces. How boring! More and more my feminine side is drawn to the warmer tones of reds, browns, pinks, colors with a golden hue like butternut squash.... subconsciously I think I'm trying to offset the cooler grayish blue circles I notice under my eyes that seem to get more noticeable by the day! I'm sure you know what I'm talking about! LOL !

I like nice quality clothes that last because their style is simple, they're well-made, fit me great and aren't real trendy. I tend to favor timeless solid colors, not many prints, maybe an occasional stripe or a single statement piece. Overall I prefer a clean look, not too fussy. I will admit to being a sucker for good accessories, nice boots, bags, glasses, or a scarf.... but not the popular over-the-top celebrity styles. Most are wearing way too much and way too many pieces altogether in a single outfit for me. I will say I am fond of a little shiny gold detail here and there, a nice buckle or clasp detail on my handbag or pair of heels. I have many friends who shop a lot and always look very cute and stylish. They are well accessorized and in the latest seasons' trend. They look great, but I wouldn't say I fall in that category! My day-to-day style may be less than exciting..... But I love to play dress-up any time I get the chance.

Luckily this summer I've had some fun getting all dolled up! I enjoy being a girly-girl and wearing my party dresses whenever there's a chance! Celebrations are a lot of fun because outside the show ring life isn't always so glamorous :( Besides those special occasions there is one other super fun time of year I always look forward to, Halloween! I still have as much fun putting on my costume as I remember when I was a little kid. This is a favorite holiday of mine because…… you guessed it, I love to try to outdo myself every year getting more and more elaborate with my costumes. Most of my best creations are a combination of thrift store finds and kitschy homemade pieces stuck together with the help of my favorite tool, my handy dandy glue gun!

Having the privilege to get to design and create in my daily life is an important outlet for me, even if sometimes it gets a little stressful! I hope all you gals are enjoying exploring your personal style and wearing what makes you happy, both in and out of the show ring, whether you’re the type who looks forward to slipping on a coveted pleasure jacket before entering the ring or maybe you're more of a dress down comfort casual type girl. For me most of the time nothing sounds better than slipping on my favorite pair of worn-out old jeans. I hope the clothes we make have a special place in your wardrobe and are some of your most favorite things to wear! I hope you feel confident and beautiful every time you wear Heather's Hot Couture. Our clothes are made for fun and should make you feel good.

The new rythym summer!

Wow! This summer is flying by!

I can't believe it's August already.... where did the lazy days of summer go? These last few weeks have been anything but. We are working on so many new CBH projects and we recently began collaborating with a local artist on a few new airbrush pieces. I'm so excited to get these new jackets finished - they are going to be HOT! I know airbrush designs aren't an entirely new idea to show clothes, but I've been waiting for the right opportunity to come along for us to play with paint. After observing many of the current trends, and closely inspecting many airbrushed, painted and mixed media designs, we decided we were ready to experiment in the many ways we could incorporate this fun new medium into some of our up-and-coming projects. After much consideration I'm very excited to have found an amazingly talented artist to work with.

We've been enjoying creating new collaged styles, with a lot more texture and depth. These textural details come from the mixed use of many types of materials. There is no limit to the possibilities, from the more expected traditional leather fringe and applique work to the use of airbrush, loose studs, stones, and even irregular sharpened rocks for unexpected edgy new styles.

I have to tell you it's nice to take a much needed late-night break from my current job at the stoning station, aka my desk. Stoning, stoning, and more stoning is driving me mad! I love it and can't stop until every last crystal is in it's place, but at some point I reach my limit. I'm figuring out that about four days in a row of solid stoning is about all I can handle!! My eyes! My back! My sanity! I know it's bad when even doing costing or inventory sounds like a fun break. I couldn't be in this business if I didn't have a special type of love for embellishing and tedious types of hand work. Sometimes I think I'm totally crazy, but then I see the finished project and it's all worth it.

It's just now hitting me this summer's sunny season is more than 2/3 over and I've barely been out soaking it up. Usually I'm a total summer girl. I love the hot weather, sun on my skin, gorgeous evenings dining outside and getting wet any chance I get. Summertime is meant for a little easy living so..... please forgive me for my posts being less than prompt. Summers sure have changed over the years. I don't think summer break even exists anymore for most of us. Even if you have a real summer break from school or work, I'm willing to bet you spent it busy running around too. Just know I've been happily hard at work this summer... luckily breaking here and there for a few short trips that help me stay energized. I love feeling ready and excited for Monday to get back to work, then I'm full of inspiration and fresh ideas. A few fun things I've been up to this summer include a wedding, river rafting, many birthday parties, both of friends and family, a little boating, a wine festival and couple baby showers.

I'm going to have many fun new pieces to show you real soon. Right now I'm just juggling projects. Switching between tasks is a nice little way for me to break and shift gears while still producing, whether it be sketching, sewing, cutting, stoning, or working at the computer. The variety of garments, customers and daily duties is one of the best parts of small business. I love being my own boss and having the freedom to determine when to take a day to relax!

Playing Dress-Up!

Making dress-up clothes for ladies big and small. That's a good way to describe my job..... I'm a dress-up clothes designer! I really strive to help enhance your playtime experience, but this is a serious business too. I like to think I'm in the business of costumes and dreams.

When it comes to show clothes my philosophy is It's time to play!! I love flashy, flamboyant, and over-the-top! Because why not? Fashion should be fun! If you can't dress up just for fun when you're pursuing your hobby, then when can you? I know there are many who will disagree and think the show clothes industry has gone way too far these days. I don't think so.

I share a love of the traditional western aesthetics of times past. I know western wear has greatly contributed to todays' popular styles, both inside and outside the show ring. What could be a more classic American style than a traditional cotton blouse or tailored western snap shirt paired with good old blue jeans? I love beautifully tooled leather belts and intricately embroidered-yoke blouses. Many of these classic western wear styles remain a popular part of mainstream fashion and our culture today. What I think makes show clothes so much fun is the evolution of designs and styles, from way back when cowboy clothes focused on function and practical work wear to the edgy over-the-top blinged-up show clothes of today. The progression is what keeps things so exciting for me, and is a big reason I choose to make these costumes. I know these costumes are a huge part of why we ride and show in western events. I've always enjoyed English and hunter jumper events and showed in them myself, but the added fun of fashion is definitely the missing component.... if you ask me.

Playing dress-up is a fun and harmless way we can express our wild side while reinventing ourselves. Show clothes are just that, meant for SHOW! I've noticed many trainers often favor more traditional western styles when influencing their clients' show wardrobe choices. This is where your best judgment comes into play. Many trainers are afraid of loud clothes taking away from the horse and rider in the pen. Of course they have a valid point, but in my opinion a good designer should understand how to enhance your image without distracting from it.

Whether you're a wallflower just trying to blend in by wearing brown on the rail, or a show-off in fluorescents, remember it takes all kinds to keep things interesting. Creative self-expression is a huge part of what inspires each CBH design I sketch. Working with clients on custom orders is one the best parts of my job. Image and confidence is key to success in every part of life. I would encourage you to always have fun when playing dress-up!

Unlike many of our competitors out there who claim to do one-of-a-kind show apparel, we really do. This is a pet peeve of mine because I think it's misleading and misrepresents their product. I may take the word "original" a little more seriously than most others, as a designer, but I have to ......... it's my job! There are many ways to design, produce and run a successful business. This we all agree on. For me there still is only one way to define an original. By definition ONE means only ONE. BUYERS BEWARE: If you pay attention to other websites, or even take a closer look at many other show clothes companies' ads, then you may notice that many of their so-called one-of-a-kinds look remarkably unoriginal. Here's a perfect example of how ONE can and is loosely used all the time in the show clothes industry.

"Beautiful ONE-of-a-kind black, gold and red Pleasure Jacket in a women's size 4." Sounds great right? Well, ONE meaning in that size. "We have another in a size 0, a 2, and oh wait.......also in a 6 and an 8. Just one in each size, or just one in the black, gold, and red combination. We also have it...... or can make it for you in black gold and pink if you are looking for something more youthful." This is not what I consider a ONE-of-a-kind jacket at all! You be the judge........It's your hard-earned dollar. You should know what you're buying and what you're not!! Don't be fooled by misleading advertising and loosely used terms that make claims they define by their own definition. Just a little advice to smart shoppers, ask questions about so-called originals. Be specific, find out if it's avabile in other colors, sizes, or if it will be re-made to your size............because if so, the chances are you won't be the only one wearing it! I have been told many times by clients that they had ordered a custom, a one-of-a-kind outfit and then got to the World or Congress show to find out someone else was wearing the same thing!!!! Even worse, in their same class!!!! What a nightmare!

I hope I'm not coming off as a snob but rather a truth teller. I must also say there are many other very talented designers and businesses doing beautiful work out there who are very reputable, along with many who are not. Customs or one-of-a-kinds do always cost more, as they should. The hefty pricetag ensures that the time spent creating your look is yours only and won't be seen elsewhere. As a designer, I understand a custom look is not in everyone's budget, but I do think you should know just what you are buying, no matter the price. If you are in the market or shopping around you will see what I mean.

For now we have some stunning ALWAYS one-of-a-kinds for sale in our Boutique that are sure to get the attention you want. We know there are many last-minute ladies out there preparing to head out for some of the summer seasons' biggest and best shows, with AQYHA and the Reichert Celebration as well as the many Regional Experiences coming up soon. We are so happy to hear you had a great time and looked beautiful competing at the BIG TIME show! Congratulations!

A BIG GIANT CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! is in order for the new Appaloosa Youth World's 10 & Under Horsemanship Champion, Julia Aaron. As you can see she is beaming in this great picture just after taking home the trophy. She followed it up with the Showmanship Championship the next day, wearing her Custom by Heather showmanship outfit. WOW! Pretty impressive! What giant achievements for such a little Lady! Camera Shy!

This week's been about getting organized, finishing up old projects..........or should I say not so fun stuff we've been putting off. Topping the list: alterations, book work, web work, and the dreaded TAXES! :( One of our least favorite parts about being a small business owner is getting down to the real business part. The designing, creating and working with our clients is the best part! The books and numbers, although important, is not so fun, but catching up on all the neglected stack of papers does feel good.

I hope all of you have signed up for our newsletter. It's a monthly email that usually features our most recent Equine Chronicle ad and special offers. This last ad really turned out cute! Many of you Paint and Pinto ladies may have recognized the familiar face in our ad. We had beautiful Teddi-Lynne Solberg model for the ad. She is an APHA youth all-around competitor and has been a great client of ours. Teddi made the perfect model because she loves the camera and the camera loves her too! I wish I could say the same! Which brings me to my next least-favorite thing... getting my picture taken! I REALLY HATE IT and it runs in the family because my Mom does too!

Many people have been asking me "why my face isn't on our website or our blog?" Well the truth is I hate getting my picture taken. I'd much rather be behind the camera lens. Besides the fact that I hate the camera I've been procrastinating about hunting for a good picture to share with you. I really love the images our graphic designer created of us. Check out the Who's Heather page of our website and also the home page art work, which was custom made just for us. I really love these images. They are super cute illustrated characters Cathy designed of us. Our talented designer Cathy worked closely with us using photos of each of us as well as descriptions of our favorite outfits. The boots my character is wearing are really mine and paired with my favorite pair of skinny jeans. My illustrated image is a pretty good likeness to me but....due to popular demand I will add a picture as well. I understand the mystery of wanting to see the face that goes with the name or personality. If you've been reading my blog then you have seen me a few times, usually being active and enjoying the outdoors when I'm not working. I'd much rather show off our designs and clients' pics than show the world another pic of me having a bad hair day! Oh well! I guess it's no secret anymore my curly hair has a mind of it's own! Thanks for your curiosity and patience in advance. I PROMISE a picture is coming soon - it may just take some professional help. I think we need the talent of a photographer to get it right and show us off in our best light.

Until then here's a few recent pictures of me enjoying the California sun during my time off. My favorite is me attempting to shuck my first oyster. They not only fulfill my cravings for salt, but are great for silky locks because they are full of vitamins and minerals! Healthy and delicious! Maybe... better hair days are to come! LOL! Next week I will show you some exciting new designs we're working on for the Custom By Heather Boutique. They should be finished right in time for the late summer shows, Fall Classic and APHA and AQHA Amateur World Shows.

Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the Show!

Wow!

Well, I know it's been a while since my last post. Sorry I've been a little lax in posting lately, we've really been working our fingers to the bone! Literally! (There isn't a garment that makes it out of here without a little blood and sweat going into it! ) Yikes! We've been stitching and stoning non-stop getting Pinto World orders finished. Somehow it always works out, even when it feels like the work never ends and there's not enough hours in the day. I'm sure most of you can relate to being busy beyond belief, juggling jobs with family obligations, a household, and trying to squeeze in time for riding and showing.

For the weeks I've missed writing it was because....... something had to give, and as always, my NUMBER ONE PRIORITY had to be on the clothes, getting everything shipped in time for all our clients' shows. I'm glad to say once again we did it! As we always do, on time and beautifully. So it's time to celebrate, right? Or maybe just sleep in and relax.......too tired to party. We enjoyed a large Mexican feast (one of our favorites!), a perfect blended Margarita complete with tropical umbrella and a few days off to recuperate. A much-needed minivacation from all things work related except watching the live broadcast online of Pinto World from the comfort of my couch. I have to say I'm very impressed and proud of so many of our clients out there in Oklahoma representing California and kicking butt! Go girls! I hope you are soaking up every minute of your victories. As for me, a little time in the sun by the pool, a little time in the garden and fetch with my dog at the beach are a few things we've been enjoying away from work. For the first time in a long time I actually enjoyed dusting, vacuuming, and even doing laundry! Wow! I guess life as usual is pretty good after two solid months of SWEAT SHOP MANIA! I've never been the type to enjoy catching dust bunnies and cleaning lint traps, but I guess I'm finally thankful to have time for chores and much needed balance back in my life.

Now that my permanently caffeinated state has worn off I want show off what we've been slaving away on! Each of these new projects were headed to the World shows so hopefully they are being worn and adored as I write this from my recovery spot here at the desk! Whats Hot!

It seems there hasn't been a dull moment this month with so many fun shows sneaking up on us! I'm sure many of you are looking forward to putting all your practice and training to good use out in the ring at the upcoming shows. Springtime in northern California sure hasn't felt like springtime at all this year, with so many cool and cloudy days full of showers, but it makes for perfect sewing conditions! It's harder to be cooped-up inside when the sun is shining outside. Our saying around here is that "May is the new January." As a team we've been keeping right on track for our much anticpated June deadlines for our Pinto World Show clothes ordered.

I must say this years' bunch of clothes have been a ton of fun for me as a designer because I've been given so much creative freedom with many of these designs. I feel very lucky to be trusted by such a great group of clients who are adventurous and brave enough to let me do my thing! Personally, I love surprises.....and I guess many of you do too! I know my own personal show style would be considered by some to be over-the-top. My own wild tastes aren't shared by everyone...that's just what makes the world go around. So I tend to kept my crazier ideas on reserve for those daring gals who like to be trendsetters. I often find just getting to know my clients and paying attention to their personality gives me enough insight to understand how to design something they will love. We hope you'll all be pleased with your new looks!

I think there are two types of clients: the first are those who just want to "leave the designing to the designer" and the second are those who have a very specific idea of what they want to wear and how they want to be seen. These clients just need a little help executing their vision. I can honestly say I enjoy both types of clients. Each pose a new set of challenges for me. If I had to classify myself, I would be in the second group because I know what I like and what I want almost all the time!

Throughout the process we are always learning and listening to our clients. Sometimes it's easier to find out what they dislike if they're not really sure about their own style. As an artist I love the creative collaboration challenges that custom clients' orders sometimes pose. Right now we're immersed in youth designs for the 14-18 group. These young ladies are an adventurous bunch! Working on their show clothes is making every day a lot of fun. We are doing a lot of collaging of materials for a very 3-D effect. Experimenting with multiple fabrics, laces, sequins and solids in combination with prints, leather, suede, and crystals is becoming a fun and exciting new trend. I really like the intricate details created by layering, when using mulitiple materials together. It is a great way to get more bling for your buck. Sequins, beaded fabrics and fancy trims are definitely going to be a hot trend this year at all of the world level shows for youth and amateur riders. That's my prediction on whats hot!

First Fit Right!

I'm happy to report things are as busy as ever. We need to invest in cloning ourselves because sometimes four hands and two brains just aren't enough! So we recruited some much needed help! Thanks to our lovely friend and talented seamstress, Janice, we can finally start sleeping at night. She may be regretting her decision to jump in and join our sweatshop team any day now........especially if we keep her doing plenty of hand work and wearing thimbles!

Most recently while conducting a fitting it came to our attention many people are unfamiliar with the tried-and-true process of muslins, AKA mock-ups, and fittings. Measure twice and cut once is usually the best practice anywhere it applies. Building a garment is a little like building a house, it requires plans and engineering to get the job done right. The importance of a fitting should not be overlooked, even if it is a bit of an inconvenience. A professional fitting is always the best way to prevent fitting problems, but if you can't get to a professional seamstress, help from a friend will do.

When you order a Custom or Couture garment, whether a wedding dress, ball gown or a pleasure jacket, measurements are the first step. After measurements are charted, photos, videos and notes can also be helpful. A pattern is then developed from plotting your measurements and following many steps to achieve a custom pattern meant just for you. Style of garment and body type are the two major factors that determine how hard or easy making your pattern will be. Pattern drafting is the most dry and extremely technical part of our job, and like most other things, practice makes perfect! Next a muslin or "mock-up" garment is sewn from your pattern and finally it's FITTING TIME!

The purpose of the fitting is to prevent alterations and ill-fitting clothes. There's nothing worse than tearing up a finished jacket, heavily embellished with leather and crystals! In my opinion it's just as costly as taking the time to get it right the first time around. This is our chance to tweak your pattern after seeing what the muslin fit is like. Minor adjustments are to be expected and usually require only small changes to your pattern before we're ready to go to final fabric or leather. This is also the perfect opportunity for the client to comminuate about their preferences (tighter pants, shorter hem line etc.) Think of Project Runway or Say Yes to The Dress!

The chance to check our work and fix any potential fit problems is always the best way for a designer and client to know there won't be any surprises. We find that unless you are "Barbie" and have a perfectly proportioned body, a fitting is like insurance, which is a good thing. I know nobody wants to be the one standing out in her class for all the wrong reasons, so although this may sound like a strange and a bit of a painstaking process, we think it's worth it!

A custom made garment is an investment, and after your first pattern is developed you may be able to avoid more fittings when you're ready for a new look. Oftentimes entire wardrobes can be drafted once your initial patterns are created, unless of course you change sizes by dropping and gaining weight or are a young growing girl. When you think of all the money you're spending, measuring right and mocking-up first just makes common sense! Then the real fun begins with the glitter and glitz!

Glitzy Gals!

The power of sparkle! It's somewhat magical and mysterious to me, whether it be diamonds, crystals, studs, stones or gems, all things that glitter. I find myself drawn to them, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. This explains a lot when you think about the current trends in popular fashion and most definitely the undeniable trend toward tons of bling in show clothes. Why is it so many of us ladies can't get enough glitz? I know I love it and sometimes I think it's part of our DNA. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, I'm always attracted to it. Even when I'm at Target running errands, buying dish soap and toothpaste, I find myself distracted once again by the sparkly, strappy sandal section. (I can pass by the rubber flip-flop section any day no problem!) Before you know it I'm trying on jeweled lovelies instead of speeding through the checkout. If there was ever an expert on the subject of women and bling, I think Elizabeth Taylor would be a great person to ask about the power and attraction shiny pretty things seem to have over us. For now I will continue to fight my urges to live up to my sometime nickname "The Crystal Queen" because I definitely believe all bling is good in moderation outside the show ring.

I wanted to share a few more pictures we took while at the CPHA & 7CPHA show recently. You would think spending this much time in the past few weeks stoning custom orders for the show I would be burnt out on bling! I'm not quite sure it's possible. The more time I spend in such a sparkly environment, the more ideas I have about new ways I can use and combine all things that glitter into my next designs. I wanted to show you all a few pictures of some of the crystalized creations I adored from the show.

This is a picture of Sarayah Voorhees looking beautiful with lots of bling in her newest Custom by Heather Horsemanship Top. She has a big smile and thats what we like to see. It is always so much fun when I get a chance to see my creations on such beautiful talented young ladies. The hard part about this business is oftentimes we never meet our clients in person, just shipping off our work across the country to someone I may never see or meet.

Getting out to this past show I also got a few pictures of Brenda wearing her CBH SMS suit. What a pretty pair she and her gelding make! Slate blue with oodles of sparkles was tasteful with his slick sorrel coat. I apologize because pictures never do these type of clothes justice :( So much detail is lost that can only really be appreciated in person. I can't tell you how many letters we get from customers who say how much better the clothes look in person! I love hearing that we exceed your expectations. Nothing could be a better compliment!

Show of The Year!

My Show Of The Year Re-Cap!

There we were.... back up at Rancho Murieta Equestrian Center for the CPHA Show Of The Year! The first few days the rain was streaming through the showgrounds and pooling in the arenas again. It's deja voo - almost the exact same scene from last months AQHA show. From where I sit inside the M-Box I'm watching cattle dogs and corgies wearing rain coats follow behind girls wearing hat covers and plastic rain gear as they tough out the storm. As I watch these diehard competitors scurry from their barn rows to the refuge of the giant covered arena to warm-up for today's trail classes I'm thinking this cannot be happening....two shows in a row hit hard by storms and the flooding rain is keeping us shut in again!

Now it's evening and the sky is finally opening up to clear blue after two days of heavy rain......I'm certain that sunny 70's are in our future. As we wait it out the storms are passing and we're buckling down and doing what else? Cutting sequins, sewing on giant crystals and studying up on this years' Paint Horse Directory. I love reading about all the young ladies and youth accomplishments, victories and awards. Pretty impressive and inspiring seeing their dedication to showing.... it's enough to make me want to break out of the M-box, dodge some puddles and make my way over to watch a few of todays' trail classes.

At the show some of the other vendors were our friends Dina and Lorin Short of Seriously Fancy Show Apparel, who carry our Sample Sale items, as well as Carlos of Carlos Silver, a familiar smiling face who can hook you up with all your custom silver needs!

The sound of the rain on the metal roof is a soothing sound and the quiet from wind sets the stage for a mellow day in the trail pen. The classes seem a little small and the course looks a little easier than I had expected. The course wasn't laid out very tight and it didn't have many elevations either...... I guess that's easy for me to say from the bleachers! ha ha! I never really cared for trail in my riding/showing days...I think it's just way too hard to memorize patterns under pressure! I've definitely watched my share of patterns though, cheering on my sister at tons of her AQHA shows! (Dressing her and barnmates is how I got started after all!) Even now I still get nervous for her sometimes, especially watching her at the World show. I may be biased, but she and her horse "Trooper" (Big League Look - our mascot on the website) always made trail look so pretty. I remember some of those quarterhorse courses looking just about impossible with everything so close together and rows of walkovers elevated at least a foot high. I think they decided to go easy on the entrants this time, maybe with all the nasty weather they deserved a little break!

I wanted to show you all some pictures I took while waiting for the storms to pass. We were visiting with some friends, other vendors and of course what could be more fun than shopping! My next entry is expected to be bright and sunny. The forecast from here is bright with lots of sparkle glistening from silver saddles and tons of Swarovskis blinging up my view from the rail.

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

I'm proud to announce that I did it! I've successfully completed my SCUBA Diving Open Water course and now I'm officially a PADI certified scuba diver! Yea! One longtime goal down.......... ten million more to go!

I survived the chilly waters off Monterey! Last weekend I had an AMAZING time while exploring the breathtaking world of the northern California Pacific coast. I can't say enough about all the beautiful and abundant sea life. I was lucky enough to see seals swimming in the breakwater cove just yards from us! Not to mention the giant crabs crawling among thousands of starfish, corals, sanddabs and sea anenomies throughout the giant kelp forest. My dive buddy and boyfriend Clay is an advanced diver and my teacher a total pro, so they eased all my fears. Once in the ocean I was instantly amazed by the beauty. I forgot how terrible and skin-tight my double layered wet suit, tank and gear all felt. The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and the water was glass. My teacher Kevin said "YOU GOT LUCKY!" It's rarely sunny and warm in Monterey two days in a row. I guess I can't have the weather Gods on my side all the time. It was sunny for diving but rainy for the horse show this week.

From seaside to the foothills we are headed up to the Paint-O-Rama at Rancho Murieta Equestrian Center again for the Show of The Year. It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest, Paint show in California. This week has been challenging, rewarding and exciting all at the same time! Our business is bustling this time of year with big shows right around the corner. I'm so glad to have squeezed in some fun personal time this past week despite my otherwise workaholic schedule. Hope to see all of our Paint friends out this weekend enjoying brighter skies and better weather!

Spring has sprung!

Hello everyone! I hope you all received my last post......if not that's because we had a few technical difficulties this past week with our blog. We had to "migrate" our blog. I've been really excited to share some pictures from last weekends' photo shoot with you. Our models couldn't have been prettier! A BIG THANK YOU to our friends and lovely models Kindra and Maddy. It was so rewarding to see our newly-finished designs modeled by such pretty ladies. Seeing our designs on a person instead of the lifeless dress form, they truly just came to life, right before my eyes as the girls put them on. They loved wearing them too! I guess some of us really never grow out of playing dress-up! The shoot was lots of fun but WAYYY TOO EARLY for me on a Saturday morning! Thanks to all for being such good sports and making it happen.

I'm soo glad this project is finally finished....... because it's been along time coming. The set got bumped to the back burner a few times due to the proirty of orders, but I'm happy to say it was worth the wait to see this vision come together. A while back I posted my sketch of this Pleasure Jacket and seeing it together with the Horsemanship top now they really are the total package! Surviving March Madness!

What a whirlwind the past few weeks have been. I apolgize for not posting the last few weeks...... it seems like time has run away from me a little lately. I'm sure that many of you can relate. Truly I'm thankful to have so much to do, so I hope that I don't come off as whining! My last post was written from the PCQHA show and this entry is a little wrap-up of the past few weeks' hectic happenings since then. Hope you can see just what I mean. Here's a pic of Lois (which she hates) putting the finishing touches on a garment while at the show.

It seems like the controlled chaos began when our truck engine blew, and to make matters worse it was just a few days before we we're supposed to be leaving for the show! Then we found out more bad news - its warranty had just expired a few months prior....what a bummer! Things were starting to get complicated, with no time to shop for a truck and no truck to haul, we were forced to use the M-Box (our show mobile) to haul up to Rancho for the show. Once at the show we were all set up and settled in things seemed to be going a little better.... despite one day lost to really rainy weather. We made good use of our time shut inside the M-BOX. Mom kept busy doing finishing work, sewing on giant crystals and snaps while I was on a roll stoning away at on our kitchen table. Our makeshift mobile studio isn't anything fancy, that's for sure, but it allows us the flexibility to work, keeping our production going while selling and running our vendor booth. Losing production time at the shows can be a big problem because we are a smaller company and usually have orders to finish. Some of you may remember our cute PINK tent. It was hard to miss, but didn't really allow us to get much work done. Sadly for now, our pink booth is temporarily out of commission until we figure just how to adapt it to our needs. I really have to admit I miss all the pink and our sparkly crystal chandalier! For now we're a little less glamorous at the shows and a little more business. Making the most of our time is just what makes the most sense. In case any of you were wondering just what happened to the pink booth girls - we're here.......just with less pink :(

There can be alot of down time between your classes, especially if you aren't an all-around rider showing in multiple events. This is when many of you do a little shopping, tend to your horses, stalls, band manes, or relax with your barn mates. For us without horses to worry about at the shows, we love to get away from the shop a little to watch our favorite classes, playing pretend judge and cheering for our favorites! Sometimes watching classes can offer me tons of new inspriation. I often like to sketch new ideas for designs while watching you all out there. Of course we do a lot of visiting and talking at the shows, so it's really nice to come inside to read, work, or just take a break.

Back from the show and what a week! We had a few rush orders that had to be wrapped up and shipped out in time for the Golden-n-Grand. Gotta love those last minute shoppers! Then back to work on patterns for new HMS styles and preparations for this weekends' Equine Chronicle ad photo shoot. We also received this cute client picture of Hanna Taylor of Arkansas and her appy, Kramer. I wish I could see her face THIS WEEK when she received her brand new Custom By Heather package in the mail! Check out Hanna's new custom look in pictures above. I'm sure her special new outfit will be a longtime favorite. Thanks Hanna and family for the adorable pic! I will definitely share the next ones of Hanna modeling her new clothes too.

In the midst of all this work I had a bridal party fitting to attend (bridesmaid again!) and a best friend's baby shower (she sure looks cute with that big belly!) and then I'm on to planning a wedding shower in Dallas for my other close friend and college roomate this May. More excitment was my Grandpa Merchant's birthday party on Wednesday night and most of the family gathered together to watch him blow out 84 candles! Pretty impressive! I also met my very new two month old second cousin Arianna for the first time. She was definitely the center of attention at the party. Our family has an amazing way of growing. Big families can be lots of fun and a little crazy too! I'm lucky to have them all so close by.

Just for fun I also recently decided to sign up for scuba diving classes and get certified. I've been studying a lot lately and last night completed my first in-pool session! So far it's a little overwhelming, familiarizing myself with all the new equipment. There is so much to remember. I hope I get to the point where it's second nature....kind of like saddling up a horse and knowing just how to do it. I have to admit it's a bit scary, but I'm up for the challenge, plus swimming is great exercise too! I'm glad I've finally made the time and scheduled it to pursue a longtime dream. I will let you all know how it goes. My first ocean dive is April 17th in the FREEZING waters of Monterey, CA, the weekend before we hit the road for our next show, this time in a bigger, better, shiny new truck! with more space for all our show clothes. We'll hope to see out paint friends up at Rancho for the combined CPHA - 7CPHC show from April 21-25. I guess it all worked out and I survived March maddness.

Saddly Soggy but Hopeful!

A little late in posting this blog - we needed some time to recover after our show and get back into our super-busy schedule. Then of course unloading and getting production going again has to come first. But here's more or less a sort of journal of our adventure!

Yesterday was a great first day, the show began and I felt eager and excited to jump out of bed. For me, a total nightowl, it's a bit tough getting used to the early mornings that show schedules require. We were off to a great start, seeing many old friends, clients and even a few past barn buddies.

The morning started with Showmanship, a favorite of mine. Of course for the clothes and because I think it is one of the most challenging events, truely an art when done well. We had a front-row seat with our booth set-up right up front between the main and practice arenas in the middle of all the action. This show, being early in the season, is one of the first AQHA shows in California and despite beginning on a Thursday the turnout seems to be pretty good! The weather is calm and just beautiful! We couldn't have asked for better. Not a single rack, display or manequin has even blown over and the dust level is pretty low in our paved spot alongside the grassy landscaping protecting us from the warm-up arenas usual dust storm. It's a miracle in Vendorville!

I can't remember a more pleasant first day at a show. There were so many nice compliments on the clothes. "They look so much prettier in person," said Krissy, one of our wonderful clients. "I loved it when I saw it on the Blog, I would buy it in a heartbeat if it fit me." It's always fun to talking about trends and seeing familiar faces.... a few sales & new orders didn't hurt either!

Despite the perfect first day at the show, we knew things were about to change and boy did they ever! Our weather has been so unpredictable lately, but this time the weatherman was right - a storm was abrewin'! Today we are experiancing RAIN, RAIN, and more RAIN! Water everywhere - the arenas look like lakes! Here we are, all shut in and not able to set up. Everything was just too good to be true until the storm hit this morning! Today I'm blogging from inside our "M-Box," our nick name for the motorhome or showmobile. We are cooped-up the middle of Puddleville. We're now calling this Lake Rancho Murieta! The upside of the bad weather is we're able to work, with internet and lots of power. Despite the rain we've got orders to finish so we're sewing and working inside today. As they say "The show must go on"...... and for now that's only happening from inside two covered arenas. Sadly no shopping today, it's just time to hunker down. The only action around here is running from shelter to shelter as the rain hasn't stopped all day! Take a look!

Tomorrow's forecast is sunny, breezy and 60's and I really hope they're right! I can't wait to get out of this M-box - it's beginning to feel more like a swim meet than a horse show! Thank you to all who are weathering the storm today for stopping by yesterday. It's been great to visit with so many past clients and we're excited for dry weekend and a great 2010 season!

The Pre-Show Pack Up!

As we finish up the last of our orders due before the show next week, we're shipping em' out and shifting gears to prepare for showtime.  There's definitely no shortage of things to do before leaving home, for now we're cleaning, organizing and packing tons of fabric and clothes before next Wednesday's haul.

Lately I find myself thinking more and more about the dusty dirty world we are about to head into. It always seems a little shocking at first, the amount of dust and dirt that will inevitably cover everything and temporarily creep into every area of our lives. This takes at least a day or two to get used to and I'm not even a clean freak!  Maybe I'm even a tiny bit of a slob! An honest slob though.   As you all well know, the shows can be a dusty, dirty but hopefully not a rainy, muddy mess! Yikes! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a dry week. Sometimes it's really hard to believe that we make and wear these fancy clothes out there on horseback in the midst of all these harsh elements!

Explaining the type clothes we make is often really hard to do. My friends (outsiders unfamiliar with the horse show world) wonder just what the heck we're getting all dressed up for.  I tell them it's nothing like the old west that most associate with western wear.  Coming out to a show is the best way see our crazy world. I say if you like record heat, lots of flies, dusty, windy storms and jam-packed arenas full of sweaty horses, riders and trainers going in circles, this could be the sport for you!! Call us crazy! It's for the love of the sport, and THE CLOTHES ARE A BIG PART OF THE COMPETITION, like it or not! We make these dazzling creations not for grand galas or elegant charity balls...... they're meant for riding around in the dirt!  How silly and true that really is.

We're setting out to set up shop at the Rancho Murieta Equestrian Center for our first of the season AQHA show. Being based in the San Francisco bay area, we love these show grounds. They are a huge asset and are super-convenient for us - just 75 miles from home. We are very lucky to have such a great facility in our backyard. I guess it's obvious by now..... I've been thinking a lot about my favorite parts of going out to the shows... and trying not to think about my least favorite parts! LOL! I always look forward to the beginning of the season. The first shows are fun to catch up with old friends, past customers and familiar faces. Hitting the shows many times is the only opportunity I get to meet you all - the faces behind the names, the calls and emails. Many times we design and make clothes for you, but never even meet because the internet is an such an amazing tool and helps us reach people all over who love showing horses. Meeting with you our customers face-to-face often happens at the shows. I love having the chance to learn about your personality. Getting to know you is always the ideal way to start any project, so stop by the booth and say hello.   We love to talk fashion.

The number one thing I'm excited about is taking time to run down to the rail and watch you all in the classes. This is the most fun for me. I love to see the finished clothes out in the arena, in the saddle, with chaps, hats, the coordinating pad, the shiny horse, the full tail. At that moment the picture is finally complete for me! I love to admire and critique the clothes.  The best part is feeling good about what you've created and seeing how the horse and rider/wearer shows it off. It's very rewarding when you can see the woman's confidence and you can tell she feels at her best! It's mesmerizing to see the perfect picture, if only for a moment. That is the moment that keeps us going, driven to compete. The moment when all the hard work comes together .

Ying and Yang - Finding Our Balance

This week we finally began a project that I've been excited about for a while. This is a Custom By Heather Rail Jacket that goes with our newest CBH Horsemanship top for sale on the site. It seems that the moment we found this striking sequined black and white check print fabric we had tons of ideas about how we could make into an awesome ensemble set! My design for the jacket was inspired by my Mom's (Lois, my Partner) design for the HMS top. You may remember the sketch she did, I posted it a little while back. I really loved her design and have been itching to get this jacket going to complete the matching set!

This ensemble is truly the a joint project, each of us contributing by designing half of the two piece set. I think of this project as "The Ying-Yang" set, partly because we always give each project our own silly name like "The Butterfly" or "The Cheerleader" or "The Rainbow Bright."  To me this set represents Ying-Yang.  The overall esthetic feels very balanced because of color blocking and the simple black and white pallet. Instead of looking split in half or like two ideas in the same fabric, I wanted the designs to feel inter-locking, each half strengthening the other to make a whole cohesive set. I think this creates a more put-together look for wearing in multiple classes.

The fact that it is a two-piece set and each of us literally designed half makes this Ying-Yang theme come full circle, a first for us! Every project is a joint effort but.... never before have we each come up with half of a complete set. I guess we really do make a great team! I think both designs work so well together and no one would ever guess they were designed by two different people.   Here's a look at my design sketch for the jacket.
Both pieces are made to our size six (our sizes tend to run small) so if you're an xs or a small or a size four in other brands you may fit our six. I wish I could squeeze into this set! I always try everything on when it's finished, just for fun! I just love the sharp contrasts and angles that make these designs really stand out in the arena. I can imagine myself on the rail in a pleasure class in this one for sure. Oh, I guess if I had the clothes I would just need the matching horse....... maybe a black and white tobanio or a big black AQHA gelding with a white star and maybe some bright white socks too! lol! I guess a girl can dream!! For now dreaming up new designs is tons of fun and keeps me WAY TOO BUSY!  I just hope in the balancing act of completing custom orders and meeting deadlines we are able to find time to get some more fun stuff made for our March 11th show. Yikes! That's right the corner!
