Sorry to say it looks as though there has been a recent murder up on my flower bank. The first sign was this...

...then I noticed this......and finally the true horror was revealed...

It looks as though Cheeky Fox has been enjoying a pigeon dinner, and I have a particular dislike for pigeons, or flying rats as I consider them, so despite my longstanding vegetarianism and life-loving pacifism, I really hope he enjoyed his feast!

However, it’s not all death-ridden gloom on the flower bank. Just inches behind the murder scene, the purple hollyhock is still making new growth and flowering prolifically, bringing some cheer to the grey-sky autumn day.

Life & Death
Love Life
XXX

A Tudor Trip

My sister and her family were visiting from Edinburgh last week. strawberry plant giveaway, an impromptu allotment event arranged after I realised that, despite already having given away about 50 strawberry runners, the bed was still so choc-full with new plants that they would probably be too close to crop next year.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395164822838535506" style="DISPLAY: block;
Before.....

I had to have a major clear so I posted an offer of free organic strawberry runners on a couple of my local Freecycle sites. Within 24 hours the response was so enormous I had to co-ordinate a plan so arranged the giveaway afternoon inviting those wanting plants to pitch up at my plot and help themselves.

....and After! A bit more space at least.

It was great. I met loads of interesting people, many of them local, and of course meeting other gardeners is always a joy. Some came alone, some with friends and some with family and children. Everybody went away with bagfuls of freshly lifted strawberry plants and I was able to clear 3 wheelbarrows full of my overabundant but very healthy strawberry plants without one of them going to waste. I totted up a mental total of about 300 plants passed on to new homes.

A win-win situation – my favourite kind.

Love Freecycling
Love Life
XXX

Better late than never

I’ve been ploughing through the same over-complicated job application form for the last two weeks, trying to stick to my regime of a little at a time so as not to hurt my arms overdoing the keyboard work, which has meant no extra keyboard time to keep up with the blog. Some of this will be fortnight-old news then. Forgive me my lateness please.

Where to begin? Perhaps with the bees, who are STILL busy at it!

Keeper of the backpackers hive, Farokh, tells me their honey won third prize from the North London Beekeepers recently. He brought us a jar to share at our working party barbeque a few weeks ago and it was exquisite, and very healing; I’d had a bad headcold following the lurgy and a few spoons of the honey worked wonders. Farokh is particularly delighted with the progress as it’s only his first full year of beekeeping. Next year he will install another hive at the far end of the site. Then we will have honey galore!

Autumn is a busy time at the plot as there’s lots of clearing and tidying up to do before winter sets in. It was a week ago that my friend Christine Binnie, together with her sister Jennifer, transformed her flat into an art installation with events planned throughout October. It is the first time that they have exhibited as sisters, and according to their statement, “draws on their upbringing of creativity, spirituality and resourcefulness, nurtured in a bungalow on the edge of the South Downs by their artists parents – Kenneth, a printer, painter and follower of Rudolph Steiner, and Beryl – a weaver, spinner, Guide Leader, church choir member and pillar of the community”.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390179240021896338" style="DISPLAY: block; Look closer....

I cut back the old, dead stems and leaves from the hollyhocks that backdrop the fence right at the top of the bank. While doing it I noticed this tiny snail

nestling in one of the hollyhock’s new flowers

Then on to a good couple of hours hand weeding between plants, strong and delicious scents wafting around me in the leek bed, where I also removed one of the green courgette plants which was looking very sorry for itself and on its last legs. I travelled home on the tube, a straight journey on the Jubilee line taking about 20 minutes maximum, and a journey I make often. I got on the train with a friend and a couple of stops along I noticed a rather hideous man with a pot belly, bad teeth and hair, and a horribly lecherous look staring right at me. It made me feel uncomfortable so I mentioned it to my friend and we both stared back hoping to shame him into averting his gaze elsewhere. It didn’t work. My friend got off at Oxford Circus and the train filled up.

“Will you be OK?” my friend asked before alighting, “perhaps you should move into another carriage”. I considered it but the train was full so I would have to stand, and I was tired and already had a perfectly good seat, and anyway, I have every right to travel safely without feeling uncomfortable.

When the train pulled out of Oxford Circus station the vile man, who by now must have thought he could creep me out to his heart's delight since I was now alone, made a truly repulsive facial expression, one of lechery in the extreme, as his staring continued. I was cross that his behaviour was making me feel so uncomfortable and knew I had to make him stop so I announced in a very loud and even voice, while looking straight at him

“Why do you keep staring at me?”

Everybody looked, first at me and then at him, and as they did he blushed red and flustered around as he started to say that he wasn’t staring but I cut him off, again very loudly,

“Please stop staring at me now because you are making me feel very uncomfortable”.

With the whole section of the carriage looking at him he stopped his lecherous staring immediately. He spent the rest of the journey looking at his feet and didn’t bother me, or any other lone female, again.

If somebody is bothering you in public then oust them loudly. My silent attempt at shaming by staring back at this creep didn’t work, but the moment I made everybody around me aware of what he was doing he stopped.

Don’t be silent, be vocal. And be safe.

Loathe lechery
Love loudness
Love Life
XXX

Flower Gardens

A few weeks ago I began volunteering at Culpeper Community Garden in Islington. Substituting grated courgette (what else?!?!!) for meat I also added a wide selection of herbs.

They worked well, looked great and tasted delicious!

With the cooking apples on the communal tree at the allotment ready to use, a favourite pudding I’ve made a few times recently is rhubarb, apple and raspberry crumble.
Yummy!

There’s a lot to look forward to in autumn and winter too. It was his first trip to my plot and he enjoyed helping with the work, showed particular skill digging and filling up his bucket with soil, and although he found the wheelbarrow a bit too large and tricky to handle, he did an excellent job assisting me with the composting too.

It was a real treat that my friend Kate Magic came up from Brighton for a visit with her three fantastic boys. When a frog catches an insect it throws its sticky tongue out of its mouth and wraps it around its prey. The frog’s tongue then snaps back and throws the food down its throat.

So my little froglet had not snapped its tongue back quickly enough and it had got stuck to the wood? I remain baffled but happy to help.

Find out more about frogs here.

Love Frogs
Love Life
XXX

A bit of a whirl

It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the social whirling front. I had planned to meet Damian and his nephew Joe, staying for his last week of summer holidays before starting at ‘big school’, down by the Thames on the Southbank, but the weather was a bit grim so we decided to do things in town instead.
While walking around we stumbled across this marvellous driftwood sculpture.

Then we went to Pollock’s Toy Museum in Scala Street, where, rather incredibly, I had never been before.

It was absolutely great and well worth a visit if you like old toys, or old buildings, as part of the house is 18th century. There’s a wonderful shop too, selling delightful old-fashioned timeless items at very good prices.

Saturday was Glenn’s 50th birthday picnic on Clapham Common. Another Golden Jubilee! Oh well, as I said before, we are all getting older.
Sadly the weather was autumnal and by 6:30pm everybody was chilled to the bone and the party broke up and dispersed. Ironically Glenn’s actual birthday is today, so we could have had the picnic yesterday, when the weather was golden and sunny and gorgeous. But who really cares – we all had a great time and it’s only weather, after all.

Love a social whirl
Love Life
XXX

The Camomile Lawn, and other allotment tales

I was busy at the plot last week. I’d been waiting and waiting for a biodynamic ‘leaf’ day in which to plant out the precious lawn camomile plants that Russell kindly gave me a few weeks ago. You may recall that I’d already prepared the planting area and marked it out with white string. The auspicious day fell on Thursday, having been beautifully preceded by sunshine and showers, perfect weather for planting. The soil was just damp enough but not wet, and the small weeds that had appeared since preparation lifted out with ease. So precious are these plants to me (I’ve tried to grow lawn camomile myself from seed several times and it’s very unpredictable, which is probably why the plants are so expensive to buy) that I Reiki-ed them and the planting bed before, during and after the planting ritual.

Summer may be coming to an end but there is still much growing to be noticed and admired:

Cayenne Peppers

More courgettes! The silver lining though, has been discovering that heritage tomato variety, Red Pear, appears to be quite blight-resistant. Its fruits are clean and now starting to ripen. I haven’t been up since Saturday but imagine these will be red-ripe when I go to pick them tomorrow.

Concerned by the threat of blight a few weeks ago, I’d cut back the foliage of my Edzell Blue potatoes. Inspired by my recent illness I decided to make the most of the opportunity for a big life-change and am moving into Horticultural Therapy. Inspiration can be found in the most unlikely of places.

It was a simple decision really. I love my healing work and I love gardening, so combining the two made perfect sense to me. Now I am fully recovered and raring to go, I have a three-part plan:

1) I need a part-time paid job.
2) I need to volunteer at some gardening-based projects in order to gain experience working in the community. I will volunteer at 2 or 3 different places in order to work with different groups of people.
3) Despite having years of gardening experience, in these days I will also need a recognised horticultural qualification. This will not be a problem. I am not in a hurry.

I haven’t been blogging so much recently because of 1. I am very actively (probably over-actively) seeking a nice, low stress level, part-time job, somewhere lovely where I will enjoy being, and doing something enjoyable where I don’t have to sit at a computer desk all day. It’s not much to ask and there are suitable jobs out there. But it’s catch-22 for me, as in order to gain this I have to sit at a computer desk all day, every day. It’s playing havoc with my bilateral epicondylitis (aka my damaged arms) as my best recovery is NOT doing keyboard work at all. But application forms are not like they were in my day – now you have to write an essay. An average form takes me about 5 hours to complete. After this I always need an hour or two up at my allotment in order to soothe the brain and heal the spirit (if not the arms).

Here are some lovely snaps taken whilst up at the plot over the last couple of weeks:

The pictures directly above and below are of the same pumpkin taken two days apart. The pic above is close-up but the pic below is not. You can see how it's grown. I didn't snap it yesterday as I forgot my camera but it's really getting quite large already. The variety is Turks Turban.

These are the butternut squash, earlier on this year presumed dead (devoured by slugs) but amazingly recovered and now taking over the bank like triffids.

A lovely ladybird catching a few rays.

I am excited about 2. I’m looking at several projects and have applied for a couple of things already – a therapy garden and a schools garden – and will be hearing something further in September, which is by now only next week!

As far as 3 is concerned, I’ve discovered that the government will pay the fees if you study a particular qualification. I’ve got lots of stuff I need to research before choosing which course to do, but it’s more online, arm-wrecking work, and since there’s no immediate hurry I will get 1 and 2 up and running first.

In the meantime there are Heavenly Healing sessions and an ever-changing allotment to attend to. One thing is for sure – I will never be bored!

Love Change
Love Life
XXX

A Cheeky Catch-Up

Cheeky the Fox came by my plot for a visit on Wednesday.
It was lovely to see him after a too-long absence. It hasn’t reached my plot yet but, mindful of the damage it causes, I decided to take drastic prevention measures. I bit the bullet and cut back the foliage of my Edzell Blue potatoes, although all leaves and stems looked beautifully healthy, with no signs of blight. I intend to divide up my large central bed with a narrow path of this wonderfully aromatic plant, so I’ve marked out the boundaries with string and weeded an area ready for planting. I have to wait now until the end of this month for my next ‘leaf’ planting day, and then according to all books, it will grow and spread, and every time I take a step it will exude a gorgeous perfume. It is possibly my all-time favourite tree, I think because it conjures up wonderful memories of Indian trips. London in July has been a right washout. I can normally cope with a bit of rain, but this last month has really got me down. I was about to leave my place and go to the allotment yesterday when the skies opened. My bicycle panniers were packed and ready to go with all the necessary accoutrements - my hand tools, a flask of herbal tea and a small piece of cake. Once again it had to be postponed at the last minute. I got up there later on but only stayed for a couple of hours. The problem is that this keeps happening and is thoroughly uninspiring to me in every way, and as a vegetable gardener has resulted in much frustration and very few blog posts.
Oh well, since there’s little to do about it I take this chance to catch up here and post some of the relatively few pictures I’ve been able to take this July.

Of course it’s not all bad news – there’s plenty of food to take home at each visit. I’ve now lifted all the Pentland Javelin first early potatoes and the hopper is full.
