Excellent, excellent article, by Spengler on Jeremiah Wright and black liberation theology. h/t Lisa Schiffren, the Corner.

What strikes me is how similar this theology is to Islam. One can easily see how both derived from the Black Power movement of the 60's. There is no surprise then, that Jeremiah Wright has honored Louis Farrakhan. There is nothing "Christian" about black liberation theology, except to use Jesus Christ as some sort of Messiah figure, but a Jesus Christ completely foreign to history.

As for Obama? There is no way he can get out of this, in my book. Either he shares Wright's theology or he is an opportunist, willing to allow his children to sit under such teaching, in order to further his political career. Rev. Wright's church is not the only one in Chicago to have chosen from. To stay for 20 years says something about Barack Obama. None of which is good, in my book.

Geldof and Bono

This is why I respect men like Bob Geldof and Bono, though I probably disagree with them on almost every political issue. They are not anti Bush like so many in the music business. They recognize that Bush is a decent guy with compassion and not Hitler re-incarnate. It is because of this that I, at least, are willing to listen to what they have to say about their cause.
Here's all you really need from the article.

Mr. Bush, said Mr. Geldof, "has done more than any other president so far."

"This is the triumph of American policy really," he said. "It was probably unexpected of the man. It was expected of the nation, but not of the man, but both rose to the occasion."

"What's in it for [Mr. Bush]? Absolutely nothing," Mr. Geldof said.

Mr. Geldof said that the president has failed "to articulate this to Americans" but said he is also "pissed off" at the press for their failure to report on this good news story.

"You guys didn't pay attention," Geldof said to a group of reporters from all the major newspapers.

But I’d say this to them: When the primaries are over, if McCain has won the day, don’t sulk and don’t sit it out. Don’t pretend there’s no difference between a candidate who’s committed to winning in Iraq and a Democratic nominee who embraces defeat. Don’t tell us that it doesn’t matter if the next president voted to confirm John Roberts and Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court, or opposed them. Don’t close your eyes to the difference between pro-life and pro-choice, or between resistance to big government and the embrace of it.

McCain, huh? I really, really don't like the fact that he's likely to be the GOP nominee. However, I also don't like the pile on from Rush, Glenn Beck, Hannity and everyone at NRO. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I think they are probably going to end up encouraging people to stay home or vote 3rd party and ensure Hillary or Obama are elected. As much as I do not like the idea of McCain as a Republican president, I'd take him any day over those two.

McCain is not conservative (just as Huckabee isn't conservative). I wonder if these same people would be up in arms if Giuliani had gotten the nomination. He's not conservative either. Would they be more for a fiscal conservative and a social liberal? There's that divide that Huckabee has been able to exploit. Social vs. fiscal conservatives. Which is more important?

A year ago I was a one issue voter. The war of terror was the only thing I really cared about, and so I was a Rudy girl. I had since changed that opinion with a couple of decent candidates who were true conservatives (ok, one but Fred never had a chance). Now I guess I'll have to be back to being a one issue girl.

This is really terrific. If you don't have 75 minutes to watch the whole thing (you really should find the time though...it's that interesting) just watch a bit. It is a conversation between Jonah Goldberg and Will Wilkinson, of the CATO Institute. Wilkinson doesn't agree 100% with Goldberg but he is fair, intelligent and interested in the truth.

In case you've been living in a cave this past week, you need to pay attention here. Jonah Goldberg has a new book out that has got the left all in an uproar (admittedly it doesn't take much for that to occur). The book is Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning

Here is my favorite comment on Amazon, from a member of the American Left. It is so dripping with irony its hilarious:

"The easiest way to shut down any political discussion is to start comparing the opposition to nazis."

hmmm....where have I heard someone compared to Hitler in recent years? Let me think...anyone?

One guy gives us a the following definition of fascism,

"1: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition."

yep...liberal fascism sounds about right, doesn't it? Jonah makes it plain that not all fascism is Nazism and that the Progressives of the early 20th century share many of the policies and goals of fascist regimes like Hitler and Mussolini, though maybe not the racial hatred. As reviewer David McCune states,

"If you leave out the parts about killing all the Jews and invading Poland, what specifically about the Nazi political platform do you [modern day liberal] disagree with?"

The point is that these progressives of the early 20th century are the forebears of the modern so called "liberals" and that their policy goals (universal health care, universal child care...the nanny state) have more in common with fascism than classical liberalism. In fact, the grandparents of modern conservatives are the true liberals, like Thomas Jefferson who believed in individual freedom, property rights and limited government. It was these "liberals" who opposed slavery based on these principles. Hillary Clinton et al. are NOT liberals in the historical sense, but have simply hijacked the term. In fact, fascists like Hitler and Mussolini were socialists and sought to implement an intrusive state that would control and direct the lives of its citizens. It's "lazzez faire" vs "interventionism" - two opposite ideas. Conservative vs. "liberal." What is it that Conservatives want to conserve? Classical liberal values. The change that we saw in regards to racial equality was championed, not by the "progressive" Democratic party, but by Republicans (no matter what your high school history teacher told you).

Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism seeks to set the terms and the record straight. No surprise that the Left doesn't want to be unmasked in such a way!

So, want to buy it? Amazon is out, so you'd have to wait 3-6 weeks. I suggest running down to your local bookstore or ordering it from NRO (you might just get a signed copy!) Oh, you could try Barnes and Nobles online too :-)

I've posted a lot about Mark Steyn and the case against him in Canada. His "trial" is not until this summer, but right now another courageous man is being screwed by these Canadian human rights guardians. Read his opening statement here.

Ezra Levant's hate crime? He had the gall to publish those infamous Danish cartoons. You can view the cartoons here. A radical imam complained and now he's in court to answer to human rights violations.

I don't think I want to hear any of these Canadian "human rights" advocates complaining about the Russian press.

This is why I like Giuliani as the GOP nominee; he has thought out the issue of national security and won't have to wait a year to have someone formulate his ideas. Read his newest edition of City Journal and tell me Huckabee could have written anything like this, or Thompson...or even Romney. None of them have thought this issue out the way Giuliani has.

This sham of a case against Mark Steyn and Maclean's is really, simply put, ludicrous. Most people in the West probably shrug this off as one isolated case and may even think that perhaps Mr. Steyn has written something horrible and that maybe he shouldn't have done so. Read "The Horribly Offending Article" and decide for yourself.

This may seem like a small thing concerning one guy but consider its implication for just a moment. This man (and Maclean's magazine) are being brought up on charges of violating the human rights of Canadian Muslims because of one article that offends some people. This is an incredibly slippery slope we are on and we in the US need to pay attention. We may indeed be the last bastion of individual liberty.

Oh, and don't forget to read Mark's own site...educating, interesting, hilarious, poignant and plucky...that's our Mark Steyn!

So Maclean's magazine printed excerpts of Mark Steyn's book America Alone (buy here) and is now being brought to court accused of violating the human rights of Canadian Muslims by subjecting them to "hatred and contempt." The British Columbia Human Rights Convention will hear the case in June. Why not buy Mark's book just out of spite (or buy it and actually read it and learn something).

Waterboarding ...

So, it seems Stephen King thinks Jenna Bush should be waterboarded. Good man.

It is my understanding that we put certain of our soldiers through this so called torture so that they learn how to withstand it. This tells me two things (1) It is a common practice around the world. Is it a bit of bigotry that we expect bad behavior from certain groups of people, but not from ourselves? Stephen King doesn't complain about the barbaric practices of the Egyptians. (2) The fact that we put our own men and women through this indicates that it is not exactly torture. There is apparently no bodily harm (or even long term psychological harm). I suppose you could argue that our soldiers know they will not drown and therefore can withstand it (the purpose of the exercise.

I don't understand what people like Stephen King expect us to do with terrorists? Maybe this...
