I’ve reached a point in my life where I’m really beginning to realize stuff in my life that’s unnecessary or bringing me down. Isn’t being aware the first step to change (if you want?)? The past 10 days of when I’ve been able to make it to yoga, I’ve broken down every session. This morning was the most intensive. After bow pose in the floor series, I couldn’t function. Physically, emotionally could not function. I needed help. I left the class crying immediately following the finish, and I couldn’t see, could barely function, and I was able to ask the owner of the Bikram studio I attend to open my warm coconut water for me, since all during the floor series, I was unable to flip the top on the can. When I look back now on this morning’s Bikram, I am so incredibly thankful for the most difficult classes, the ones I can’t function, can’t move, can’t lock my knee, can’t focus, the heat is overwhelming, I’m sweating rivers…these classes are the most successful to me. Layers and layers of onion. Who knows when I’ll get to the core, but I’m always up for the challenge. (As I kept saying to myself during the floor series, Get out, get out of me, Get out, leave me, get out) To let go and release it all. To be free.

I had a debate with a friend (you know I’m really beginning to love East Coasters out here, they’re amazing and so vibrant!) a couple weeks ago, about happiness. I say, “Nobody deserves happiness.” And she argues that good people deserve happiness. I say, “Nobody deserves happiness. Happiness is a choice, you have to choose it and work for it.” Tell me I’m wrong.

Today was a happy day for me. Very happy. Nothing like coming home after an extremely intensive long day to a surprising chilled bottle of champagne (or sparkling wine). I’m thankful I’m challenged everyday, Every Day, and for the smiles I receive through brief interaction with others. I’m thankful for being curious, the Taurus in me, always up for a challenge, always thankful when I get to butt heads with a Virgo…which always leaves me wondering.

Today was a good day. A very good day. I am very thankful, appreciative, curious and my mind is working. (What else is new?) January 1st, 2012, My friends Ingrid and Shane who married on the property where they reside in Plumas County. I am thankful, so thankful they allowed me to be there (besides the fact I threatened Ingrid she couldn’t get married without me being there) as their witness.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I photographed Belen and Diego’s wedding in Morgan Hill. I can understand about 1 in every 10 words of Spanish, so I found it fascinating their entire Mass ceremony and reception was completely conducted entirely in Spanish. Thus I was challenged. Instead of relying on words to navigate my documentary coverage, I based everything on how I saw and how I connected with the moment instead of my sense of hearing. Fascinating challenge. I loved it. Side note- the other day I took a Bikram class and struggled through all of it, hacking up my lungs, total PMS mode, totally cranky, a couple times..I just had to release and cry. Bow pose was my best friend that day, because it was the most difficult for me and it made me cry. Literally. I am beginning to enjoy the experiences I have that are the most challenging and difficult for me. Evolution. I will ever be evolving to be a better person, a better photographer…better at everything, but first I feel I have to get to root of the problem and work up from there. Belen and Diego in Morgan Hill. So thankful they trusted my vision and let me photograph art with every ounce of my being..I thrive on life and everything it offers to me. Trust is such a blessing. Thank you.

I met Nina and her mom when I travelled up to Quincy to visit my friend, Ingrid, and to play around photographically at the Fall Apple Pressing event. I happened into a conversation with Nina’s mom about high school senior portraits. I remember telling her that when I photograph I strive to capture the personality of whom I photograph. I enjoy photographs that are real and show the relationship between people, as well as the personalities of each individual. I think I’m pretty good with bringing out my subject’s personalities when I photograph, which is why I enjoy photographing weddings so much because there’s so much emotion and stress throughout the day, I can tend to be invisible and capture the real story of this once in a lifetime event. Nina contacted me not long after to see if I was willing to photograph her senior portraits. I don’t photograph a lot of senior portraits, mostly because I feel there are so many photographers here in Tahoe, as well as Reno, that do a really nice job, and as I thrive on the interaction and relationship I build with my clients to capture them as they are, instead of a very posed, look at the camera, and smile type portraiture I’ve seen. I definitely remember my senior portraits, and if I had a clue back then, I would’ve wanted photographs that really captured my personality. Nina was all in for my vision. She sent me tons of photographs of what she liked photographically, and had a ton of ideas for her senior portraits. I was so freaking in. I love my clients when they have these incredible ideas that I get to evolve within my vision photographically. Nina and I planned for a couple hours up near her home (she already scouted locations she wanted to be photographed at) and also wanted to have some family portraits captured as well. I told her, “Tell your family to be who they are. I don’t want to see a myriad of white or black shirts with blue jeans. I want to capture everyone’s personality. Who they are. Be true to yourself and let me photograph you as you are.” I had such an amazing experience photographing Nina and her family, in addition to Nina’s senior portraits. So much fun, I want to do it again soon. If you’re looking for distinctive senior portraits, or even family portraits, drop me a line. I’d love to build upon your ideas.
