Members of the AKA Sorority were out in force at yesterday's HeiferFest event at the Virginia Beach Farmer's Market. The sorority has adopted Heifer as one of its special projects, and their presence enriched the occasion with their spirited willingness to help in any capacity. One highlight of the event was their presentation of a check for $300.00 to the Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads to support our annual fund-raising event. We feel very fortunate to be the recipient of the generosity and kindness of these wonderful women.

Members of the Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads will comprise the studio audience of The Hampton Roads Show airing on Friday, August 12th at 8:00 AM. Rose Alleman, our spokesperson, will promote HeiferFest, our educational and fundraising activity, that will take place on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market. Francis Asbury UMC Vacation Bible School Donates to HeiferFest

The children attending Vacation Bible School really enjoyed learning about the animals that go into an Ark. It made them happy to know that sharing their spare coins could help others.

They set a goal of $150.00 for the week and each day the children and some adults pushed their coins and bills into the Heifer Box Banks, Ark Bank and Sheep Banks. They watched eagerly as the display showed their total growing. The congregation added a little to help them on the Sunday after Vacation Bible School.

They collected a whopping $350.00 that will be donated to HeiferFest. The children were so proud to be able to buy two llamas, a flock of chicks and honeybees!

The Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads send a big Thank You to each and every child who participated at Francis Asbury UMC! We really appreciate your generosity.

Quilt for HeiferFest

The quilters of Christian Church Uniting are continuing their tradition of raising money for Heifer by donating a hand-made quilt to HeiferFest. The design is "Ohio Star", 96" x 96" (king size) and will be displayed during the event at the Virginia Beach Farmers Market on August 13 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

Donations of $2.00 for one ticket or $5.00 for three tickets will be accepted at the event. The drawing will be held September 4 and may be extended to Thanksgiving to allow more opportunities to increase the "gift to Heifer."

Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads would like to express their appreciation to the Christian Church Uniting for their ongoing support and contributions to our organization.

It was a pleasure to meet everyone and share information about Heifer International's domestic and foreign projects, Passing on the Gift, and how we each can make a difference. We also had details about HI's Leeds Platinum Certified (green) headquarters building in Little Rock, Arkansas. Heifer is dedicated to establishing sustainable, environmentally viable projects to help lift communities out of poverty and become prosperous. Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads presented Wayne, "Keefy the Clown," with the Volunteer of the Year 2010 award on Sunday, February 27th. The ceremony was held at the Ivy Farms Church of the Brethren to honor Wayne with his friends, fellow congregants and family present. Wayne is being recognized for his participation and outstanding contributions to our local Heifer group. He was an enthusiastic fundraiser, contacting friends and family throughout the United States for support, and as Keefy the Clown he delighted children, young and old, at our Hike for Heifer in August.

Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads supported the recent WHRO Pledge Drive by accepting donations. Wearing their bright green T-shirts and sitting behind our Heifer banner, Ralph Compton, Harriet Schley, Beth Lynch, Sue Rice, and Mary Sowash spent the evening of March 6th answering telephone calls from viewers pledging to support public TV station WHRO. If you missed it, the program will repeat on March 21st.

Annual Heifer Hike Raises $9120

Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads VA held their 6th annual “Hike for Heifer” fundraising event on Saturday, August 7th on the Virginia Beach boardwalk raising over $9000. The fun-filled day included hiking, Keefy the Clown, face painting, balloon animals, fantastic corn hole game, Libby the milking heifer with her calf Pete, Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virginia’s live observation bee hive, award-winning musical group Commodore Chorus – all topped off by Virginia Beach Amateur Radio Club running a Special Event Station devoted to the hike. The funds raised were designated to the Heifer Honduras Matching Opportunity which is a program that will assist 2,058 families in 43 communities in Honduras. Additional Hike donations continue to come in – so the Hike may reach its goal of 2 arks. Thanks to everyone who supported the hike and all individuals and organizations that made the day a great success – helping fight hunger and poverty while having fun!

The Heifer Volunteers of Hampton Roads will sponsor its annual fundraising hike at the Virginia Beach ocean front on Saturday, August 7th. Registration and activity tables will be set up on the board walk at the 17th Street Park. Families as well as individuals are welcome to participate in the event that will begin at 9:00 AM.

Amateur Radio operators from the Virginia Beach Amateur Radio Club will operate a Ham Radio Special Event station to celebrate our Hike for Heifer. A fully functional ham radio station will be on-site during the hike."

We will have activities for children at the park and provide water for hikers. We will also have an observation bee hive on display and a beekeeper present who can answer questions. There is a queen bee in the hive and it's a great opportunity to view her laying eggs.

Come by to find out more about Heifer and how it continues to provide people with animals and plants, enabling them to maintain a sustainable existence.
