I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with this blog ever since I started using Hummingbird last fall. So, I decided to try an idea of mine called Lesson Reviews. Essentially, it’s more of a “what I learned from X anime” than a review, but the thing is, there will be good and bad things I learned. The list can be short. Depending on the number of pros vs. cons, it can determine my overall score for a particular show. I don’t really like scoring based systems, but statistics are easier to deal with. This also means I can skew a show in any favor by adding more lessons to either side. It’s the best way for me to be subjective, since that’s really at the heart of reviews (no review is really objective, and even if one is, it’s probably more of a synopsis/summary with technical data).

Anyway, I’m going to start this experiment with the recent Winter 2014 season titles, and see if this could be something I can stick with. Otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board. :P

A new spring season is upon us (which also means hanami in Japan)! All hail our new loli overlords! With that, it’s time to look back at the previous season and put out my thoughts on what made my list and what didn’t, as well as what exceeded or failed my expectations as the season went on.

Most Hyped But Well-Deserved Anime

For me, it was KILL la KILL. Everything I saw from the preview until the show aired in Fall 2013 not only met, but far exceeded my expectations. I thought I would go into a title like this expecting non-stop, over-the-top, fanservice-cropped action, and I ended up getting a decent story and likable characters especially in Mankanshoku Mako and a damn talking sailor fuku. Well done, Studio Trigger! The BD release will empty my wallet for I shall be re-watching this one many times over! Now I just need to finish Gurren Lagann at some point…

Most Over-Hyped Anime

After you watch the intense RESPECT FOR THE DEAD MAN OP, you were properly hyped for action with NOBUNAGUN, the story of a weapon otaku who becomes a weapon due to E-Genes she inherited from Nobunaga Oda himself. Or something like that. Instead, I got a show with pacing that rivaled this season’s abysmal Z/X IGNITION and a main character so boring that Nobunaga himself would rise from the grave, find Studio Bridge, tell them she sucked, and then… I dunno, go eat some taiyaki or something because washoku is delicious and a resurrected person shouldn’t pass up the chance to eat more. Actually, that would be a better plot twist. I dozed off during multiple episodes, and I really tried to give it a fair chance by sticking it out to the end, because some parts weren’t entirely terrible (Gandhi and Newton were fun characters and I liked the flashback episode that revealed the commander’s past). I went into this as I usually do, not expecting anything, and it turned out to be just south of okay for me. Not the worst show ever, but I’ve definitely seen better. It’s kind of sad because the premise of reincarnated historical figures with superpowers protecting Earth from bug aliens a la Starship Troopers sounded really awesome.

Most Surprising Comeback Anime

Somehow, Witch Craft Works turned around a boring first few episodes into a slap-my-hand-on-my-leg-while-laughing-out-loud series that had me start reading the manga after the series was over.Every episode managed to make me laugh multiple times, and I love how even through serious plot points, the show managed not to take itself too seriously. Finally (and I think most people with the same sense of humor will agree), that ED sequence was just darkly hilarious, and even the song gets my vote for the most catchiest theme of the season. Sorry, Hoozuki-san.

Cutest Anime

This was hard to choose, but Mikakunin De Shinkoukei ended up winning me over the most. The show itself was tickle-me-funny because of Benio’s ultra imouto-con powers, but with both Mashiro and Kobeni in a race to the top of Moe Mountain™ sandwiched by a plot that went in an unexpected direction, it wasn’t too hard to choose this one. The catchy OP/ED combo was a nice bonus, and I’m sure I’m not the first to hum along to the opening bars of the OP. Although, what was up with the fanservice in the OP sequence? This show ended up being rather clean. Haha.

Runner-Up: Sakura Trick

Most Beautifully Animated

Nagi No Asukara, hands down. I even have hydrophobia and I thought it was great. But peel away the beauty and you have one of those rare products where the inside is just as attractive as the outside. The story packed a lot of feels (but nowhere near as frustrating as my Most Feels selection). Excellently crafted OP/ED themes made sure that you felt the impact of each episode, and I find a lump forming in my throat every time I hear them. Coincidence that one of the artists was named Yanagi Nagi? I think so.

Guilty Pleasure-est Anime

Sakura Trick is a slice-of-life show where yuri isn’t just implied; it’s right in your face. I’m not a fan of yuri, but I found myself pleasantly surprised with how innocent and cute this show stayed despite all the lip-locking scenes. I made sure to watch this one with none of my family members or friends present, thinking either I was going to hate it or the show itself would move into ecchi territory. Neither happened, but the fact that I continued this ritual meant it was a show I didn’t want others to see me watching. Shame is a silly thing, but without it, I wouldn’t have this on my list!

Best Trapped-in-an-MMORPG Anime

Yeah, yeah. I’m just trolling (or is Japan trolling us?). LOG HORIZON actually turned out to be a well thought-out show about how the mechanics of real life would apply to video game mechanics. SAO touched on this briefly but didn’t explore it full-on like this one did. This show also taught me a few things, which I will amusingly cover in my upcoming Lesson Reviews. Excuse me while I go push up my glasses…

Most Feels Anime

GOLDEN TIME was such an up-and-down experience that it was more of a feels-rollercoaster than a feels-train. The 2nd OP really did not grow on me, though. Calling a jerk “Ghost Banri” became an niche insult within my group of Hummingbird friends. Ghost Twig was exempt from this. :P

Runner-Up: Toaru Hikuushi E No Koiuta

Best Manzai Anime

D-FRAG! -D-FRAGMENTS- continued to grace us with levels of random manzai where the tsukkomi (Kenji) is outnumbered by boke (pretty much everybody else in the cast). Certainly not the first time this has been done, but thankfully, this is the one we were given this season. I happen to like manzai acts, so this show really pleased me, especially when Kenji would cave in to become a boke himself, with one of the many boke taking up temporary tsukkomi status to knock him down a few pegs. Manzai is a tough act to follow (especially if you don’t know enough Japanese) (also: see what I did there?), so this is a rather niche genre that few non-Japanese would even consider awarding.

Best Special Genre Anime

Despite a lack of afterlife folklore knowledge, I still managed to make it through Hoozuki No Reitetsu with a grin on my face (though I can’t say the same for the titular character). The depiction of Japanese Hell as being run like a Japanese corporation was amusing and even including some Chinese and Western “districts” really kept the show flavorful. However, Japan sure had a big head when trying to show that Japanese Hell was scarier or more extreme than the others, because in actuality, it’s Hoozuki-san that makes it scary. He’s so scary that even I don’t dare to mention his name without a proper honorific. LOL.

Runner-Up: Tonari No Seki-kun

Most Random Anime

STRANGE+. Like, WTF. That is all.

Most Trolling Anime

SPACE DANDY. To quote a famous American TV line, “Oh my god, they killed Dandy! You bastard!” Bones even trolled us further with episodes that had almost no comedy in them. The main villains’ spaceship is the head of the Statue of Liberty with a ball gag in her mouth. There’s a universe-wide restaurant franchise called Boobies, and yet the fanservice was rather mild in this show (except for an episode where lots of boobs are exposed in a rather horrific way). Zombies take over the universe and it’s not so bad. I say we got trolled. :)

Honorable Mentions

This whole season had more hits than misses to me. I also enjoyed Nisekoi, Hamatora, Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha., Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai! Ren, Nourin, Sekai Seifuku Bouryaku No ZVEZDA, NORAGAMI, BUDDY COMPLEX, WIZARD BARRISTERS, and Wake Up Girls! Finally, Saikin, Imouto No Yousu Ga Chotto Okashiin Da Ga. turned out to be entertaining enough, considering I was expecting it to be a non-stop ecchi fest after the first episode. Considering that I only dropped Super Sonico and Nobunaga The Fool, not bad at all.

I had my doubts going into Oreimo at first. However, it was very popular, so I started reading the manga at first. It had some funny parts to it, and didn’t appear to have any incestuous undertones. So, when I saw the anime on Crunchyroll, I decided to give it a whirl.

The seiyuu really brought the characters to life. Soon enough, I was laughing harder at parts that only managed to make me smirk in the manga by comparison. Like any series, it took a few episodes to really hit its stride, but I was definitely enjoying the storyline. Every time Kirino’s otaku side came out when she played eroge, I couldn’t help myself from laughing at her expressions. As far as I could tell from the comments, a lot of people agreed.

I finally caught up to season 2 and was instantly confused. The story line didn’t seem to fit the end of season 1. What gives? Comments led me to some unlicensed streams of OVAs that weren’t on CR that finished the season and bridged the gap. It was a shame, but I ended up watching the OVAs before I continued on to season 2.

Despite my renewed interest in supporting the anime industry (see my previous post about this), I found unlicensed streams of the Oreimo OVAs to fulfill my impatience and desire for instant gratification. As a result, I knew that even before I started watching Oreimo 2 that I was going to buy this series on BD, if available. CR had advertised a DVD box set on their site, so I decided to check my first two spots: Amazon and Right Stuf. No listing on Amazon (it seems Aniplex is so niche, even in distribution), but a BD box set was available on Right Stuf. For $280.

Wait, WHAT?

It was quite shocking, but after looking through several forums about the topic, the high pricing is due to Aniplex controlling the pricing model from Japan and basing it on Japan’s economy. It doesn’t make sense, because at this point, you’re pretty much buying the Japanese released BDs but with subtitles. There isn’t even an English dub track. However, if you want to legally watch the OVAs and own a copy of the full season, you can pretty much bet this is your only way. At least shipping would be free.

I stumbled across an old, locked forum post on Crunchyroll that detailed on how little the anime studios get paid (as well as other fansub info). It’s an interesting read, but is rather low in credible references, so I took everything at face value. However, after being involved in the political and bureaucratic hierarchy of businesses for so long, I cannot help but think that some of the theories surrounding anime studio profits could be true.

I ended up ordering it yesterday. The things we do for the anime industry, right? I had to take the funds out of my computer and clothing budgets to buy it, since I had already exhausted my entertainment budget on my earlier purchases this month.

The Oreimo 2 OVAs are going to be simulcasted worldwide on August 18th, so that will give me a chance to watch the new OVAs without having to shell out $280 again. At least until I can budget the money properly.

I’ve been watching a lot of anime lately. A lot. I’ve neglected video games, TV shows, and movies just to watch this much anime. It was very sudden too. All it took were a few key series to get me hooked in and suddenly, I was addicted again. I’m ready to accept my otaku status as vehemently as before.

Or is it just a (moon) phase? Am I just in the honeymoon stage where all I want is anime everyday until I get bored and go back to my regular habits of the past few years? It’s hard to say. All I know is that I haven’t been this passionate about something for a very long time. Sure, I’ve had some passion for my other hobbies, but this time, it’s overwhelming. I need more, want more, and am even willing to spend money on it. もっと萌え、もっとエッチ、もっと全部だ。(More moe, more ecchi, more everything.)

That said, I bought quite a bit of anime in the past couple days. It all started with a clever scheme I had to consolidate all the remaining balances on my Vanilla MasterCard and Visa gift cards I had accumulated over the year. A dollar here, five dollars there, and one card even had $14 on it; but I had nothing paltry enough to spend it on. I thought to myself, there should be a way to somehow withdraw those small amounts into an account somewhere. I came across Amazon’s gift card system. You can purchase a gift card for any amount to be sent through email or traditional means. Using the email system, it allowed you to get your money almost immediately, and add it to your Amazon gift certificate balance. I started out with the oldest Visa gift card I had and bought a $1.23 Amazon gift card. It didn’t work right away, but I surmised that it was because I was trying to buy it on Amazon.com instead of Amazon.ca, since the gift card was in Canadian funds. So, I switched over to Amazon.ca, retried the purchase, and successfully claimed my balance. Excellent! I did the same with all my Vanilla MasterCards, and while some took a few minutes and some were instant, I transferred all the balances to Amazon.ca and had a total of $31.86.

Now, the fun part was figuring out what to buy with it. I had considered manga, but then I spotted some anime that I wanted. With such a huge selection, it took me a while to decide on what I wanted in terms of title and value. While DVDs were cheap, the quality was too low for my standards with the advent of HD. It limited my choices, but there were still some good deals to be had. I wanted to pick up the BD remaster of SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN, but it was quite expensive. So, I decided on another series that I liked and had seen before: B Gata H Kei. I ensured it was the uncensored version with the final episode showing full nudity (well, just Yamada’s boobs, but still). Added to cart last night and I ended up paying $7.09 after the gift balance deduction. Crazy!

Today, I checked my budget and found that I still had money left to pick up some more anime. My next choice was SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN, but Amazon was charging quite a bit for it (about $72). I checked Crunchyroll of all places and I found it for US $59 due to my membership discount. Even with the US $15 shipping, I only paid US $74, whereas Amazon would have charged me full taxes for $82. The risk here is that I could potentially be paying duties and taxes over the border making it cheaper to buy from Amazon.ca, so I’m crossing my fingers.

Finally, RightStuf.com had SUMMER WARS and Koto No Ha No Niwa (Garden of Words) for less than US $20 each. The total came to US $54.60 after shipping and taxes (somehow US taxed Manitoba???), which works out to be roughly US $27.30 for each BD. Not cheap because SUMMER WARS was $25 on Amazon.ca; however, Koto No Ha No Niwa was $34, so I potentially saved… $8. Which could change depending on the damn border duty fees and taxes, as well as currency conversion rates. So, in the end, the lesson learned here is: Amazon.ca is much cheaper if you’re ordering in Canada. Bummer.

UPDATE 2013-07-07: According to this thread, any RightStuf orders don’t get charged duties to Canada. Now it’s all about the exchange rate.

One way or another, I still got a good deal on anime, especially on BD. Prices have dropped a lot since the last time I bought anime. Just talking about the LAIN box set alone; I paid less for the BDs than the DVDs. Crazy.

My original goal was to go completely digital and only buy physical copies for the titles I really wanted. I really liked SUMMER WARS, but is it worth the physical purchase? Hard to say. I do feel like watching it again, so maybe it is. Koto No Ha No Niwa is a different case, though. I really want to see it, but to buy it outright without watching it first? Bold move. I haven’t made a spontaneous decision like that for a long while. However, Shinkai Makoto is behind it, and he did the critically acclaimed Hoshi No Koe; Hoshi Wo Ou Kodomo; Kumo No Mukou, Yakusoku No Basho; and Byousoku 5 CENTIMETER. Blind trust is pretty much at work here.

After another long hiatus from Japanese media (not due to hate mind you, just other media taking up my time), I finally sat down and started watching a few shows at random last winter. I even read a few manga to get a preview of what to expect from the anime, but of course, I couldn’t very well read Sakurasou No PET Na Kanojo since it’s based on a RAINOBE. That didn’t stop me from trying to watch it on Crunchyroll as one of the random anime I started last winter. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really get into it, but I kept watching here and there to pass the time at my new job where I didn’t know anybody and I spent lots of alone time during lunch.

The KYARA designs were really nice, and while it was seriously funny (now that’s an oxymoron), the story was a bit lacking. Still, I pressed on because I was busy trying to finish a manga for Sukitte Ii Na Yo., which I had on pause.

You would think this sort of fan service would be nonsensical, but it actually aligns with Mashiro's character quirks and is quite funny.

After going through some issues with my media center and stress at work, I sat down and spent some time doing a marathon of the series (thank goodness for the CR app on PS3). Lo and behold, the show really hit its stride partway through the first half of the season, and the characters were given some great development. It got slightly less funny halfway through, but still enough to make me actually LOL in real life. I was all choked up at the end, and I was one of the many commenters on CR clamoring for a second season.

I highly recommend it!

Believe in Mashiro, who will believe in pantsu.

It’s been a while since I last used this format for my blog posts (e.g. the Friends style title and KERORO Gunsou closing statement), so I thought it would be fun to bring it back for nostalgia’s sake.

It looks like the creative force behind MET-ART has decided to move forward with eroticism using their unique style and tasteful aesthetic. As they describe it, it’s “high tech hardcore meets high art.”

Now, this isn’t actually anything new when compared to X-Art, but what I find very interesting is their introduction of erotic web series starting with Kamikaze Love and erotic documentary Girls Love Sex. Check out the trailer videos and you won’t be disappointed. They’re even producing an erotic music video with original music with ArtRock. Is my interest piqued? Yes! I already see top MET-ART models, Malena Morgan and Caprice, on the roster so this site is definitely not going to compromise in terms of model quality.

I’m excited to see what’s next from this project in the coming months.

I’m going to try and post a little more often, even if it’s a geeky review of art nudes. Is that even possible? There aren’t a lot of guys out there like me who appreciate the complete art side of nude photography, so be prepared to read a complete deconstruction of the entire photo set. If you’re just here for the pretty pictures, you can always just skip to the end and click on the link. I won’t begrudge you. ^_^

Apparel

Malena is “dressed” in a black silk bra with matching lace panties and stockings. Black high heels complete the package. Dual black and silver bracelets adorn her left wrist, and she doesn’t appear to be sporting any finger accessories. This might mean she’s unmarried, so any guys who personally know her and think they have a shot at this beauty should take it!

Location

A house is the focal point of this photoshoot; specifically an open, spiral staircase of delicately designed wood and possibly bronzed metal, although it’s hard to tell in the resolution given to us. The stairs themselves have been finished with wood and covered by what appears to be an orangey brown mesh rug over top of a cloth pad. In certain shots where she has to rest her knee on the surface, you can clearly see her using a beige-brown cushion, which slightly matches the pad. Speaking of matching, the mesh rug matches the wood finish of the staircase. In the background, you can see a similarly finished door with matching trim, a white trimmed window with matching white baseboard along the floor’s edge (which is wood finished in bright brown), and skin tone yellowish walls. This house adopts both a classic and modern design in its architecture.

The Model

They kept it simple and used a black eyeliner to accent her greyish-blue eyes and a red lip color that borders on neutral and muted. Her hair flows freely to frame her face, so we don’t get a good view of her ears. Her nose is quite long, but doesn’t detract from the overall beauty of her face, and I especially love the shots with her jaw closed and lips slightly open to give off a bit of a bad girl expression. Her breasts are small by society’s standards these days, but can be quite a handful if you were to cup them, so I find them just the perfect size for my tastes. You can tell they are slightly less tanned than the rest of her body, so she probably only just started nude modeling recently. Jason Self made sure she mostly stands posed with her hips pointed outwards, so you always get fooled at how curvy she actually isn’t, but the effect is stunning nonetheless and she does have a nice bum. Her pussy is completely shaved, so she’s a no-nonsense groomer who possibly waxes, and her lips are puffy and outwards (which is my preference), and quite a thing of beauty. I don’t know if the make-up artist does anything extra to her skin tone, but it does seem to blend into the overall setting. If this isn’t the case, she’s definitely not pasty white and I like that she has some color to her. At the time of writing, Malena is the top 2nd model on Met-Art.

Comparison

She doesn’t particularly remind me of anybody yet, but that’s mostly because she’s still new to me. There are some angles where I get a glimpse into almost recognizing another face, but I can’t place the person. She does have a very mature face and while she doesn’t smile anything more than demurely, I like every angle and expression so far.

Final Thoughts

This was a very earthy and organic gallery for an indoor shoot and the photographer was very particular about the monochromatic brown color scheme. Jason Self has put out a few sets with Met-Art, so I’m starting to become more familiar with his style. The model is very leggy and not top-heavy when you see a full body shot, but it all seems to balance out with her many curls of hair. She’s very attractive in a mature way, and the staircase was a very nice touch. The shot with the cushion under her knee seemed out of place, but didn’t detract from the overall package.

You can check out the free gallery at http://fhg.met-art.com/2012-03-07/EBNEO/.

Petter unveiled a new model earlier this week on April 1st named Lynne. I was mildly surprised that he didn’t have an April Fool’s joke, but I suppose it’s become somewhat of a cliche on the Internet these days.

It’s hard to judge from just the two cover photos released on the site unless you’re a subscriber, but you can see that Petter chose to shoot in a Victorian style bathroom full of deep red and gold hues. Lynne herself is a cute blonde with an ample bosom and porcelain white skin. Her long hair blends in with the background, and the red is a nice accent color to complement that.

There’s not much else to comment on, except that Petter carefully chooses the models he works with and it shows. I wasn’t overly thrilled with the last few models he chose, which is an oddity because I usually like most of them. I mostly wish that some of his exclusive models like Jula (my absolute favorite) and Orsi would make a return, but that’s just wishful thinking. I’m just glad that Nika is still posing on Met-Art, as I’ve been enjoying the interpretations of her by other photographers.

Overall, while there have been some nice models like Mercedes, Caprice, and Kiki, the last real blonde sweetheart he had featured on his site was Maya back in early February. And honestly, I didn’t even remember her until I was going back through his site because the first blonde that popped into my head was Jenny.

Also, I miss Anna S on Hegre-Art. Her Met-Art sets have been hit and miss with me.

Happy (late) April Fool’s Day!

Fortunately, I have no tricks up my sleeve this year. I do, however, have a favorite free gallery to share with you. Met-Art gives us fan-favorite, Caprice A, in Luca Helios’ Kirsos photo set this time, where she wears an already provocative red tank top and a white miniskirt to remove for our viewing pleasure.

Apparel

The red tank in question is actually an interesting piece; there’s a bikini-style hoop in the chest area with slits running from said hoop along both sides of her torso towards the back; the front is decorated with silvery adornments (they may be beads or stones, but I didn’t get a closer look). By the time she’s nude, all she’s wearing is a set of matching silver in the forms of a necklace, bracelet, and ring. Whether these are Caprice’s personal items or not is really up to question.

Location

The setting is outdoors on a cushioned bench that’s sort of limey-yellow and placed onto stonework. You can see the forest in the background and it may very well be somebody’s backyard porch or some kind of designer’s public setting. Whoever designed the cushion on top of the stone bench definitely had a good sense of functionality and design, because not only does it make such seating comfortable, it also looks good.

The Model

While Met-Art normally likes to use make-up with an emphasis on natural skin tone colors, the make-up artist decided to deepen her mascara and eyeshadow just a touch with a sort of deep pink lip color. Moving down to her nether region, she’s shaved her pubes into a landing strip with a gradient towards her naval, but overall it’s barely there. I’m used to seeing her on Hegre-Art these days with a completely shaved snatch, so seeing some work put into that area hints that she’s possibly a meticulous groomer. Caprice is currently the top #1 model on Met-Art.

Comparison

Especially with the make-up, certain shots of Caprice’s face remind me of Sarah Lancaster, who played Ellie Woodcomb (née Bartowski) in NBC’s recently departed TV show, Chuck. I do highly recommend the show, but I digress. Caprice does exude a bit of that sexy oneesan charm in this set, so if you like that kind of thing, this set is right up your alley.

Final Thoughts

This photo set itself had a very nice setting with an interesting contrast in color between the cushion and the trees. I’m not really a super fan of Caprice, but I do find her above average than most other models. Her popularity across nude art sites reinforces her staying power, so I expect her to be in the nude art circuit for quite some time to come.

I’m still admiring beautiful ladies that are professionally photographed, and the big two (MET-ART and Hegre Art) are still the premier choices, but within the past year, some new contenders have shown up to put in their own two cents.

Erotic Beauty

Formerly known as MetModels, EB has been around for quite some time as a side project to redesign MET-ART, but quickly featured its own photographers and set of girls (as well as featuring some from MET-ART) and went through site changes and finally a new name just earlier this year. While the site is more modern, the photography is still breathtaking.

TLE (The Life Erotic)

Featuring edgy art nudes in unorthodox settings, the photography closely resembles fashion photography, but still brings female nudity to the forefront. One of my favorite sets is the Dark series by Steve Blue. Check out Gioia in one of those sets for a taste.

X-Art

Who knew that hardcore sex could be filmed and photographed so beautifully? With resolutions of up to 1080p for video and carefully selected lighting and soundtracks, you have an ode to love making rather than just mindless sex. Even Tori Black is given the X-Art treatment, and it is both sensual as it is erotic. Is it art or is it just pornography wrapped in ribbons? I’ll let you decide. Caprice of MET-ART and Hegre-Art fame appeared here too.

Honorable Mentions

If you want more models and more updates than MET-ART and Hegre-Art can provide you separately, then look no further than Errotica Archives and FEMJOY. If you enjoyed Erro’s photography from MET-ART, then you should check out his official site. FEMJOY is a clean site with the standard fare, but some MET models have made it over there as well, so if you’re missing some of your favorite models like Ariel A and Dominika A, then it’s definitely worth a check!
