Michael Smolens is on his way to Linz to receive the Ars Electronica Award tomorrow for creating dotSUB. This browser-based tool is taking a wikipedian approach for creating subtitles. We had the exciting opportunity to meet with Michael in Munich today to discuss a few ideas for a future collaboration. Check out the video below for the amazing translations already available on dotSUB.

Just like Wikipedia, you can also take any exisiting subtitle translation and improve it: the powers of online communities come to life.

Es war heute so gegen 18:00 Uhr, als Mario Armando Lavandeira eine angeblich exklusive Weltsensation ver�ffentlichte: den neuen Song von Britney Spears. In der Online-Redaktion der Bunten werden ca. 40 Nachrichtensites und Weblogs durchg�ngig beobachtet und so dauerte es nur ca. 20 Minuten, bis diese Nachricht in M�nchen wahrgenommen wurde. Die ersten Reaktionen: Ist der Song wirklich von Britney Spears? Ist der Song echt? Ist es Christina Aguilera? Ist der Song wirklich neu? Oder vielleicht nur ein altes Demo?

Es geht los. Unbest�tige Ger�chte haben keinen Platz in einem professionellen journalistischen Umfeld. (Ausnahmen best�tigen die Regel.) Also der Griff zum Telefon. Bei welchem Plattenlabel ist Britney unter Vertrag? Bei der deutschen Niederlassung von Sony BMG wei� man von keiner neuen Single oder will es nicht wissen.

Ein Anruf bei der Korrespondentin in Los Angeles. Gibt es vor Ort bereits mehr Details? Oder einen Ansprechpartner von Sony BMG, der mehr sagen m�chte als die Kollegen in Deutschland?

Parallel wird versucht, ein Statement von Mario Lavandeira zu bekommen. Woher hat er den Song? Eine anonyme Quelle? Ein privates Date mit Britney? Was ist die Story hinter dem Scoop? Die ersten Kontaktversuche bleiben erfolglos.

Inzwischen ist eine halbe Stunde vergangen. Die Britney-Story auf Perezhilton.com ist schon fast am unteren Ende der Startseite angelangt, es gibt dort bereits fast 100 Kommentare, aber ohne eine ansatzweise Best�tigung oder ohne ein Statement von "Perez" gibt es keine Story. Heute ist zwar nicht der 1. April, aber man m�chte auch nicht der erste sein, der eine Ente aufnimmt und verbreitet. Es folgen weitere Telefonate.

Nach etwa einer Stunde laufen via blogsearch.google.com erste Berichte ein, da� der Song von der Radiostation 102.7 KIIS-FM im Live-Programm gespielt wird. Wieder die Frage: Woher kommt der Song? Hat man bei der Radiostation lediglich den Song von perezhilton.com kopiert und dann gesendet? Gibt es unterschiedliche Leaks? Woher stammt das Material?

Ah! Da behauptet jemand, da� es schon neun neue Songs von Britney g�be und diese von ihrem neuen Album stammen k�nnten. Vielleicht plant Britney sogar, diesen Song bei den MTV VMAs vorzusingen. Aber warum gibt es dann kein offizielles Statement von der Plattenfirma?

In der Zwischenzeit gibt es fast 700(!) Kommentare zu dem neuen Song auf perezhilton.com und etwa 50 weitere Blogs haben die Story 1:1 �bernommen. Ist der Song vielleicht doch wirklich eine neue Single von Britney Spears? Wenn ja, schafft es die Story noch vor 20 Uhr auf BUNTE T-Online? Falls der Song doch nicht von Britney ist, wie kann man die Story formulieren, ohne am n�chsten Morgen eine b�se �berraschung zu erleben? Berichten bereits andere deutsche Online-Medien? Unter Hochdruck wird an einer Geschichte samt Bilderstrecke gearbeitet.

Bei Popsugar war man w�hrenddessen ebenfalls fleissig und hat den Song auf die eigene Seite gehoben. Dort wird gefragt, ob die neue Single ein Hit wird. Ob der Song authentisch ist? Hinterfragt wird diese M�glichkeit scheinbar nicht.

Immer noch keine Best�tigung. Immer noch kein Statement von "Perez". Immer noch keine Meldung in den Tickern der Nachrichtenagenturen. Es ist kurz vor 20 Uhr. Die Story wird ver�ffentlicht. Als Frage. Ist das Britneys neuer Song?. Aus Haftungsgr�nden wird entschieden, keinen aktiven Link auf "www.perezhilton.com" zu setzen. Dort ist der Eintrag mit dem Song schon l�ngst von der Startseite verschwunden und ins Archiv gewandert.

As Mario Sixtus uncovered, a certain company sells software called "BlogBlaster" to automagically "place ads in weblogs". According to the sales collateral for this piece of ~~junk~~ software (retailing at � 35), all sites listed as options in the "place ads in these blogs" wizard and used for publishing those "ads" have given their consent to have ads placed within the comment sections of their weblogs.

Well, as it turns out, quite a few bloggers listed in the software's dubious weblog database have not given any consent to be included in this potential spam machine.

This is also the case for my blog. No, it's neither OK to spam my blog nor did anyone ask me whether or not my URL should be included.

My wild guess is: if you have a popular blog, your weblog might very well be also listed. And it doesn't matter if your weblog is written in German or English. A quick view at some of screen shots published by Mario shows, for example, that the database also includes Jeff Jarvis, just to name a random popular blog in the U.S.

Update: There is some speculation if the "find blogs" screen queries the software's internal database or just does a Google search on "+ blog" (or similar). Which leaves the question unanswered if the software is merely suggesting to have "2 million blogs" listed - and possibly fooling those who purchased the software - or whether it suggests that all blogs listed on the search result page have given consent to have "ads" placed in comments (which, in many cases, isn't the case).
