1880s Autograph Album of Frances Emma Darck of Ada, Ohio

Small autograph album that belonged to Frances Emma Darck, "Frankie", of Ada, Ohio.

The album was presented to Frankie on Christmas Day in 1882 by
someone whose name I can't quite decipher. There are three words, possibly Eron or Enon, Church and Braverman. Two of the words could be Enon Church, as there was an Enon, Ohio, not far from Ada. The friend's surname might have been Braverman.

The album is approximately 3-3/4" x 2-3/4" and contains the sentiments of about 39 people, including Frankie herself, her husband and son, other relatives and friends.

Frances Emma Darke was born about 1866 in Ohio. I didn't find a birth record for her. From Census records, I found that her mother's name was Emma, born in Maryland about 1828. Frankie's father was born in Pennsylvania, again, as determined from Census records.

I've got an inkling that Frankie's parents were Samuel O. Durck/Darck and Emily Jane (Schriner) Bolton Darck, based on the fact that some Osborn siblings called themselves Frankie's cousins. See more on this below.

Frankie had an older sister Almira Darck, born 22 February 1865. Sadly, Almira died 21 September 1882, a few months before Frankie received this album as a Christmas gift. It must have been a bleak Christmas.

Two signers indicated they were Frankie's sister, and one indicated he was Frankie's brother. Unfortunately, the two sisters didn't give a surname. I don't know if these people were full siblings, half siblings, step siblings, siblings-in-law or fraternal or religious associates.

Alice signed a page at Wharton, Ohio, on 6 October 1883 and called herself "Your Sister Alice".

Sallie, who called herself "Sister", decorated her page with a Victorian scrap.

Charles H. Canan signed a page on 24 March 1883 and called himself Frankie's brother. Interestingly, Charles at some point moved to California where he was a farmer/rancher, according to California Voter Registration records of Madera and Visalia.

According to a query I found online, whose author hasn't yet contacted me, Frankie and her son moved to California in the 1890s because they had relatives there.

On 28 October 1883, Frankie married Alexander Kerr Westhoven, in a service performed by Mr. Alerton. Alexander signed two pages in Frankie's album.

Frankie and Alexander had a son, Eugene Moss Westhoven, born on 18 November 1889 at Ada, Ohio. He signed a page in his mother's album in 1897.

At some point, either Alexander died or the couple divorced. Perhaps it was a divorce, as I found an Alexander K. Westhoven who married Emma Dora Lamphear [or variant spelling] on 17 April 1892 at Ada, Ohio. He died in 1937.

As mentioned, Frankie and son Eugene moved to California, where they were enumerated at Visalia in the 1900 Census. Frankie worked as a dressmaker.

Several people with the surname Osborn signed pages in Frankie's album. They appear to have been siblings, and three of them called Frankie a cousin.

By researching them, I found that their mother was Susannah (Durck) Osborn, daughter of Samuel and Susannah (Ochs) Durck. It seems likely that one of Susannah's brothers was Frankie's father. One of them, Samuel O. Durck, married Emily Jane Schriner Bolton, who may have been Frankie's mother Emma. In the 1870 census, Emma headed the household with daughters Almira and Frances and some people named Bolton, who may have been her children from a previous marriage.

At some point apparently, at least for one branches of the family, the Durck surname changed to Darck.

1900s autograph album of Carthagenia Hannah McCormick, "Genia" of Wamego, Kansas.

Many of the pages are inscribed to "Sweet Heart" or "Sweetheart", even by teachers, so it wasn't just a nickname within Genia's family or circle of friends.

The album is approximately 6-3/4" x 4-1/4" with puffy velvet covers and contains the sentiments of over 70 people, some of whom signed more than one page. Many people signed pages that had already been signed by others at a different point in time.

Genia pasted part of a sash on the inside front cover and wrote her name on the title page.

Carthagenia Hannah McCormick, was born 2 December 1892 at Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of James F. McCormick and Carthagenia (Hill) McCormick.

A James F. McCormick signed a page in Genia's album but didn't identify himself as her father.

Genia's brother James Telford McCormick signed a page at Wamego, Kansas on 8 November 1902.

I'm not sure of the names of Genia's paternal grandparents, but one of her father's brothers was John McCormick, who also raised a family in the area.

John's daughter May McCormick inscribed a page to her cousin Genia at Wamego, Kansas on 30 July 1903.

Genia's maternal grandparents were John Anderson Hill and Hannah (Howell) Hill.

Another cousin, Edward, who didn't sign his last name, signed a page at St. Marys, Kansas.

Genia's maternal uncle T. C. Hill, Telford C. Hill, signed a page at Valley Falls, Kansas, on 31 March 1901

One page in the album was signed by one if not two of Genia's teachers. Nellie M. Ansel signed at the Harrison School on 31 May 1907. Alma Louise Bell signed at Wamego, Kansas. E. G. Foster, Harrison School teacher and principal, signed 28 May 1907.

Teacher Mary Patterson signed a page on 2 January 1901.

Genia married George Albert Greider, son of, I think, William H. and Emily Greider. Genia and George received a marriage license in January 1920, but I don't know the date of their marriage. They were living at Topeka, Kansas in 1925, with two young children, according to a Kansas State Census. By the time of the 1930 Federal Census, they were living at Tulsa, Oklahoma, where George was the proprietor of a tire and battery store.

Another item tucked into the album was a teakettle shaped invitation to the home of Mrs. George Trout for a spot of sewing and tea on 5 November 1896.

Autograph album of Emma L. Lewis of Paintersville, Ohio, presented to her by her cousin Will P. Middleton. His given name could also be Wilt or Witt. Hopefully a reader familiar with the family will leave a comment.

The album is a large one, approximately 8-1/2" x 7" and contains the sentiments of approximately 50 people, some of whom signed more than one page and some of whom signed pages with multiple signers. There are several illustrated pages, some of which were chosen by the signers.

Several pieces of ephemera, including a Class of 1895 graduation program at Paintersville, Ohio, which was apparently sent to Emma by graduating senior Wilber A. Rudduck, and various newspaper clippings are tucked inside.

Emma L. Lewis was born 26 September 1864 at Caesar Creek, Illinois, the daughter of Robert Dean Lewis and Angeline (Faulkner) Lewis.

Emma's sisters Savilla J. Lewis and Louesa F. Lewis signed multiple pages in her album.

Louesa chose one of the illustrated pages for one of her messages.

An especially meaningful page was signed by the three sisters, Emma, Savilla and Louesa.

Additionally, a page was signed by "M." who called Emma a sister. I don't know if M was a sibling or an in-law.

About 1886, Emma L. Lewis married Joshua P. Devoe, son of George Washington Devoe and Margarette (Ary) Devoe. He was born 18 December 1861 in Greene County, Ohio. Emma and Joshua farmed at Jefferson, Ohio, and raised, I believe, five daughters, two of whom apparently found Emma's girlhood album and signed pages in it a generation later.

Hazel Devoe signed a page.

Bertha Devoe signed two pages, one of which already had three other signatures on it from 1885. Her date was 19 July 1902.

A very sad page apparently written by Emma or Joshua details the short life of their son Emory J. Devoe, who died on 14 October 1901 at the age of 11 months and 26 days.

Tucked in the album was this 1895 graduation program for what I assume was Paintersville High School. Inside is a card signed by class member Wilber A. Rudduck.

There are several newspaper clippings from the Paintersville, Ohio area. Two are obituaries for Mrs. Florenda A. Martindale and Mrs. John Rhonemus.

Autograph album that was used as a memento of a "donkey party" hosted by Mrs. and Mrs. J. W. Parker of Fletcher, Ohio, on 29 December 1888.

From a reference online, a donkey party was a party where people played "pin the tail on the donkey".

The guests at the party each took a page to write his or her name. Only one person, J. F. Lane, added the date. No one except the hosts mentioned a town.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the names of about 60 adults and children. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

I had difficulty reading some of the names and will show the images below in the hopes that a reader with knowledge will leave a comment.

1887 Autograph Album with Pages Signed by Students of Teacher Laura B. Skinner at Esek School, Belmont County, Ohio

Autograph album presented to teacher Laura B. Skinner at the conclusion of the 1886-1887 school year of the Esek School, presumably in Belmont County, Ohio.

The clipping above tells of the celebration at which Miss Laura received her album. I can imagine her delight in reading the newspaper, clipping this article and pasting it in her treasured album.

"Miss Laura B. Skinner closed a very successful term of school at Esek on the 10th. Many of the parents were present. Many kind words of endorsement of the teacher and complimentary of the school and the day's exercises, were expressed. Mr. Shotwell on behalf of the pupils presented the teacher with a handsome album, an expression of their regard for the teacher. Taking it all in all it was the best closing exercises ever held at Esek.

I wasn't able to find information on an Esek School, but a few students gave their town of residence, either Compher, Ohio, or Smyrna, Ohio, so Esek School had to be in that area.

The album is approximately 6" x 4" and contains over 40 pages signed by Laura's students, some of the younger ones apparently with a bit of help. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Laura B. Skinner was born in Ohio about February 1861, give or take a year. Her father was Richard Skinner, born in Maryland about October 1836. Laura's mother may have been the Elizabeth Skinner, daughter of Kinsman and Isabel (Fowler) Skinner, who married Richard Skinner, perhaps a cousin, as mentioned in the Centennial History of Belmont County, Ohio, and Representative Citizens.

Laura was still teaching and living at home by the time of the 1900 Census of Somerset, Ohio. By 1910 her mother Elizabeth had died, and it appears that Laura gave up teaching to help her father with the farm.

She was still living at Somerset, Ohio, at the time of the 1940 Census.

1880s autograph album that belonged to a young woman named Lura, likely of the Hartford, Ohio, area. Some people mentioned Croton, Ohio, which was an alternative name for Hartford.

I found a couple possibilities and there may be more: Lura Crowell and Lura Hall.

Several people who signed pages in Lura's album mentioned a family relationship with her. Their surnames are Gardner, Clark, Stults, King [or Ring] and Robbins.

Hopefully a reader will recognize these surnames from family research and will leave a comment with Lura's surname.

The album is approximately 7-3/4" x 4-3/4" and contains 34 pages signed by Lura's relatives, schoolmates and friends, along with several plates of romantic scenes scattered throughout.

Three people named Gardner of La Porte City, Iowa signed pages in Lura's album and described themselves as Lura's uncle and two cousins. Uncle A. W. Gardner signed his page on 4 February 1889. Whether it was he or his wife who was Lura's blood relation, I don't know.

Cousins E. A. Gardner signed a page on 7 February 1889 and Judson Gardner on 11 February 1889.

Nellie A. Clark and her brother Lewis Strong Clark of Hartford, Ohio, signed pages on 17 January 1884 and 22 January 1884 respectively.

Cousin Austin Stults of Hartford, Ohio, signed a page on 4 February 1884.

1880s autograph album of Merrill Ellsworth Dawson, with most autographs collected while he was a student at Antioch College at Yellow Springs, Ohio.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 46 pages signed by Merrill himself, two of his siblings, his Antioch schoolmates and friends, as well as plates of butterfly scenes interspersed throughout. An alphabetical list of signers appears at the end of this post.

Merrill Ellsworth Dawson was born 31 January 1864 at Roscoe, Ohio, the son of William and Augusta Mehitable (Adams) Dawson, both Ohio natives.

Merrill had, I think, nine siblings. Two of them signed pages in his album. His brother John Quincy Dawson signed a page on Sunday evening, 13 September 1885.

Merrill's sister Abbie Dawson signed a page on 19 February 1889.

Many of the Antioch students who signed pages in Merrill's album were members of the Star Literary Society of Antioch College, which some abbreviated to S.L.S. or S.L.S.A.C. One of these members was J. F. Gordon, or J. T. Gordon, who signed a page on 27 April 1884.

Another Star Literary Society member was James Ira Collins of Owensville, Indiana, who signed a page at Antioch College on 25 May 1885.

Female students also belonged to this society, as the page signed by Eva Durham at Antioch College on 14 May 1884 shows.

Two students produced artwork on their pages. Alfred C. Jones of Mt. Joy, Ohio, in Scioto County, penned his page in April 1884. I wonder if the star represents the Star Literary Society.

O. B. Thomas sketched an intricate bird in 1884.

An obituary for Dr. Dawson mentioned that he taught school for a time before entering medical school.

On 8 October 1889, in Coshocton County, Ohio, Merrill married Olive Rebecca Tredway, daughter of Resin Hammon Tredway and Mary Elizabeth (Welling) Tredway. Olive was born 12 June 1867.

Merrill and Olive had a daughter, Ethel Vern Dawson, born 9 July 1890, before divorcing.

The obituary mentioned above indicates that Merrill was president of his class at Western Reserve Medical School. I found another reference to his 1895 graduation from the medical department of the University of Wooster. I'm not sure if he attended both schools, or if the obituary is in error.

On 27 October 1897, Dr. Merrill E. Dawson married Martha J. Riney, daughter of George Thomas Riney and Nancy Jane (Edwards) Riney. Martha was born about 1865 at Monroe, Ohio. Merrill and Martha had two more children, a son Quincy Harold Dawson and a daughter Helen D. Dawson.

Merrill is shown as a physician in the 1900 Censuses of Hanover, Ohio, but by 1910, he was farming at Granville, Ohio. At some point after 1910, he moved to Louisiana to raise cattle and oranges. Sadly, he drowned in a river near Loranger, Louisiana in 1915. His body was returned to Ohio for burial.

1880s/1890s autograph album of Sarah A. Stout of the Columbus, Ohio, area, with autographs from before and after her marriage to William W. Hennick.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" with puffy leather or faux leather covers and contains about 38 pages signed by Sarah's relatives, in-laws and friends.

From online research, hopefully correct: Sarah A. Stout was born about January 1866 in Ohio, the daughter of Daniel Stout. I found a reference where she was the daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Stout of Fairfield County, Ohio, but Rebecca may have been the wife of Sarah's father at the time of Sarah's marriage, not necessarily Sarah's birth mother.

The reference was at a subscription site where I don't have access, so I can't tell you more.

On 24 November 1886, Sarah married William W. Hennick. He signed the first page in Sarah's album on 21 February 1886 at Columbus, Ohio.

William's brother Charles Hennick signed a page at Columbus, Ohio, on 10 June 1888 and called himself Sarah's brother, though he was actually her brother-in-law.

Sarah and William made their home at Columbus, Ohio, where William was engaged in the equine industry; they raised at least two sons.

Millie Eversole and Hannah Eversole called themselves Sarah's cousins. Millie signed her page at Fairfield, or Fairfield County, Ohio, on 25 July 1886.

Hannah Eversole also signed a page in July of 1886.

The Eversole surname is intriguing based on the fact that I found a reference in "The History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio: Their Past and Present", compiled by A. A. Graham and published in 1883, to a Maria Detwiler who married a Daniel Stout; her sister Susannah married David Eversole.

Another person who identified himself as Sarah's cousin was B. L. Mauger or B. Z. Mauger, who signed a page at Basil, Ohio, on 27 July 1886.

Two signers, whose last name was indicated by an initial or was a very short name starting with the letter B, are shown below. They may have been husband and wife or siblings or other relatives. Alice B. B? signed a page at Columbus, Ohio, on 21 March 1889. Charles M. B? signed at Columbus, Ohio, on 17 March 1889. Hopefully a reader with a theory as to their identity will leave a comment.

1880s autograph album that belonged to Henrietta B. Cooper, "Nettie", of St. Mary's, Ohio. Several autographs and four pages listing Nettie's students from the school year 1885-1886.

Another post features the autograph album of Nettie's sister, Ida May Cooper, which happens to contain a page signed by Nettie at St. Marys, Ohio, on 9 September 1882.

Nettie's album is approximately 7" x 4-1/2" with puffy red velvet covers and contains 8 autographed pages, plus the four pages of students' names mentioned above. An alphabetical list of the signers and students appears at the end of this post.

Henrietta B. Cooper, "Nettie" was born 1 January 1858 at St. Marys, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Lydia (Hay) Cooper. I believe Nettie dedicated her life to teaching and didn't marry.

Nettie's sister Mary, "Madie", signed a page at St. Marys, Ohio, on 1 January 1886.

Nettie was still teaching at the time of the 1920 Census of St. Marys, Ohio; her niece Fern Stephens, daughter of Ida May (Cooper) Stephens was living with her. Nettie died in 1943.

1880s autograph album of Maggie Drain of Barlow, Ohio, collected mostly while she was a student and early in her teaching career.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of about 100 people, including Maggie herself on a page shared with fellow students, Maggie's relatives, friends and schoolmates. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Many of Maggie's fellow students were then attending B.N. & C. I., which might have been a Normal School and Institute at Beverly, Ohio. A reader may have a better translation. The montage below, created on 22 July 1887, was signed by several of Maggie's classmates, as well as Maggie herself.

Some of Maggie's students at Barlow, Ohio, had created a montage earlier in February 1887.

Either Maggie had been student teaching in February 1887, or her classmates who signed the top montage in July 1887 were getting together a year or so after their graduation.

Margaret Drain was born 23 December 1862 at Palmers Settlement, Ohio, in Washington County, the daughter of Scottish immigrants Duncan and Catherine (Greenlees) Drain. Her parents signed the first pages in her album.

Several of Maggie's siblings, cousins and other relatives signed pages in her album. Maggie's younger sister Rosa Drain signed a page at Barlow, Ohio, on 5 February 1887.

Annie Harvey (Drain) Trotter, Maggie's older sister, signed two pages, one of them on 20 January 1887. Her husband Orlando Trotter also signed a page on 20 January 1887.

Maggie's older sister Nettie (Drain) Curtis of Amesville, Ohio signed a page, as did her husband Charles Carey Curtis.

Maggie's older sister Eliza Drain of Barlow, Ohio, signed a page on 12 February 1887.

James didn't sign a page in Maggie's album, but I believe that his older brother Walter S. Proctor did.

Maggie and James farmed and raised a daughter Helen Drain Proctor at Barlow, Ohio.

1880s autograph album of Samuel Evan Bell of Bladensburg, Ohio; the album was presented to him on 10 July 1881.

Many autographs appear to have been collected while Sam or Evan, as signers variously called him, was at Normal School in the early 1880s, and at least one was signed by one of his pupils in 1888. Perhaps their use of Sam or Evan reflected the length of their friendship.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains about 70 pages signed by the friends, schoolmates and relatives of Samuel Evan Bell. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Samuel Evan Bell was born 10 October 1857 in Ohio, the son of Reverend Benjamin and Mary (Moore) Bell, who were born in Greene County, Pennsylvania, and Knox County, Ohio, respectively.

By the time of the 1880 Census, Samuel was already a teacher. Either he went to Normal School for more training in the early 1880s, or he was a teacher there.

Five signers, "the Normal Boys", inscribed a page to Friend Samuel at Utica, Ohio, on 17 November 1882. They were E. M. Bell; B. F. Bennett; S. E. Jones; E. J. Hyatt; and M. C. Gilbert. At least two of these young men signed individual pages as well.

Mattie Giffen signed a page at Newcastle, Ohio, on 24 February 1888. She inscribed her page to "Friend S. E. Bell and teacher".

Two pages were signed by someone whose name I believe to be Jennie Bricker. She called herself Samuel Evan Bell's cousin. On the page below, which she signed on 17 November 1882, she gave her residence as Utica, Ohio.

Another cousin was Miss or Mrs. M. A. Harris of Utica, Ohio, who signed a page2 November 1882.

Yet another cousin, Iona Harris, signed a page at Utica, Ohio, on 31 October 1882 and decorated it with some sketched leaves.

On 1 March 1883, Samuel Evan Bell married Della Geneva Hagans, daughter of Samuel S. Hagans, Jr., and Mercy Anne (Nichols) Hagans. Della was born 15 August 1865 at Newcastle, Ohio.

By the time of the 1900 Census, they were living at Newcastle, Ohio, where they were farming and raising four children. They would have another child in 1910.

1890s Autograph Album of Emma Leutz of Jefferson, Wisconsin

Note: thanks to reader information, noted in the comments below, I've amended this post.

1890s autograph album that belonged to Emma Leutz of the Jefferson, Wisconsin, area. Emma didn't sign her name in the album, but Lottie Hibbard inscribed her page to Miss Emma Lentz.

There's a clue in the signed pages of John Differt and his wife Nettie, the latter of whom indicated that she was Emma's aunt. Whether she or her husband was Emma's blood relative, I don't know.

The album is approximately 7" x 5" and contains about 35 signed pages of sentiments. Someone took some care in repairing the spine with fabric that perfectly matches the covers. The repair didn't extend to the binding, as many pages are loose.

Most of the signers didn't indicate a residence. Of those who did, only Jefferson, Wisconsin is mentioned.

I believe the Emma who owned this album was Emma Leutz, born in 1879, the daughter of German immigrants Charles Leutz and Elizabeth (Meister) Leutz, as shown on Emma's marriage record to Edgar C. Hoffman. They were married on 17 April 1901 at Jefferson, Wisconsin.

They were still at Jefferson, Wisconsin at the time of the 1930 Census, but they may be the Edgar and Emma Hoffman who were living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the time of the 1930 and 1940 Censuses. Both are buried at Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Lena Buelow of Jefferson, Wisconsin signed a page and indicated she was Emma's schoolmate.

Another schoolmate, Maud Parks, signed a page at Jefferson, Wisconsin, on 24 March 1890.

A Bennie F. signed several pages. He may have been Benhard or Bernhard Fischer, as his last name on two pages appears to be Fischer, and there was another signer named Henry Fischer. Bennie might have been sweet on Emma.

Mary Wieman of Jefferson, Wisconsin, signed a page on 25 March 1890. She had some advice for Emma.

1890s autograph album that belonged to Oliver Otis Barrows of Frost, Ohio, in Athens County. Otis was the first person to write a page in the album, on 2 March 1890 at Frost, Ohio, in Athens County.

The album is approximately 8" x 5" and contains about 40 pages signed by Otis himself and other relatives, friends and schoolmates. Two pages written long after the bulk of the signatures were gathered were penned by one or two of Otis' daughters.

Oliver Otis Barrows was born 19 April 1871 at Mason, West Virginia, the son of Robert Hamilton Barrows and Nancy Jane (Duffee) Barrows.

Otis' mother signed a page in his album at Frost, Ohio, on 11 May 1891. Many of her Durfee relatives signed pages, as you can see in the list of signers.

Otis' brother Perry Waldo Barrows signed a page on 31 March 1890.

About 1892 in Ohio, Otis married Laura Bertha Lemmon, daughter of John B. and Laura Belle (Frost) Lemmon. "Bertha" was born 27 January 1874 at Troy, Ohio, in Athens County. She signed a page in her future husband's album at Frost, Ohio, on 9 March 1890.

The album apparently came to light in 1901 when Otis' and Bertha's daughter Golda I. Barrows signed a page on 14 December.

It was possibly Golda who signed another page on 10 October 1902, as daughter Lillian would have been only a few months past her second birthday, and daughter Eleanor was a month from being born.

Otis and Bertha raised their family at Marietta, Ohio. They had, I believe, four children, one of whom died in infancy. Otis died in 1957, and Bertha in 1964.

1880s autograph album of Ida of St. Marys, Ohio. From clues in the album, I believe that Ida was Ida May Cooper.

Two sisters, Nettie and Madie, signed pages in Ida's album, and Ida's birthday was celebrated on 8 September 1885. Ida May Cooper had sisters Henrietta B. "Nettie" Cooper and Mary "Madie" Cooper. Further, Ida was born on 8 September 1864.

The autograph album of Ida's sister Henrietta B. Cooper, "Nettie", is featured in another post. Ida didn't sign a page in Nettie's album, but "Madie" did.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of nearly 40 people, occasional illustrations and two mementos. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The mementos are a scrap of paper with a typed poem written by Cardinal Richard James Cushing and a small needlework sash, perhaps given to Ida on her wedding day.

Ida May Cooper was born 8 September 1864 at St. Marys, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Lydia (Hay) Cooper. I don't have information on Robert's parents, but I believe that Lydia's parents were James Davidson Hay and Lydia (Hinkle) Hay.

Ida's sister Nettie signed the birthday celebration page shown above and an additional page at St. Marys, Ohio, on 9 September 1882.

Ida's sister Madie also signed an additional page in addition to the birthday celebration page. She signed hers on 9 September 1882 as well.

On 23 June 1887 in Auglaize County, Ohio, Ida married English immigrant John Rogers Stephens, son of William and Elizabeth Penelope (Rogers) Stephens of Cornwall, England. John was born 3 May 1843 at Portheleven, Cornwall.

At some point after their marriage, the couple moved to Indiana. The 1900 Census lists three children then with them:

William Rogers Stephens, born May 1890 [actually 18 May 1891 at St. Mary's, Ohio]. His birthplace is listed as England, but he was born at St. Marys, Ohio, according to military records.
Fern, born about July 1898 [1 July 1898] in Indiana

Ida is shown as Ivy in this Census. She died not long after this Census enumeration, on 26 September 1900 at Hammond, Indiana.

Her husband John died on 15 May 1915 back at Auglaize County, Ohio. Daughter Fay died in 1917 in Cook County, Illinois.

Son William had moved to the Cleveland, Ohio, area by the time he completed his World War I draft registration card and was working as a machinist. He married Irene M. Goode and raised a family of five children.

Daughter Fern, it appears, went to live with her aunt Henrietta "Nettie" Cooper, and was still living with her at the time of the 1940 Census. I'm not sure if Fern ever married.

1880s autograph album of Pauline "Lina" (Burlew) Meyers of Ohio.

Several signers in the album indicated a cousin relationship with Lina, which sent me on a lot of wild goose chases. As it turns out, some of them were spouses of people who were cousins to Lina's husband George Franklin Meyers, rather than blood cousins to Lina herself.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 37 pages signed by Lina's [future] husband George Franklin Meyers, relatives of his who signed after their marriage, Lina's friends and Lina's daughter who signed in 1902. The album is interspersed with plates of butterfly and floral scenes.

Pauline "Lina" Burlew was born 19 November 1865 in New York, perhaps at Ulysses, New York, the daughter of Van Renssalaer Burlew and Cynthia (Milliman) Burlew.

On 18 June 1885, Lina married George Franklin Meyers, son of Peter and Susan (Mowery) Meyers. George was born 5 March 1864 at Stoutsville, Ohio. It was George's maternal Mowery line that connected him to the several cousins who signed pages in Lina's album.

George worked as a railroad agent. Perhaps early in his railroad career, he happened to meet a young lady in New York. Or they met because Lina's family moved progressively west from New York, after the enumeration of the 1880 Census. Van Rensselaer Burlew died in Missouri in 1897.

Lina and George lived at Greenfield, Ohio, and Columbus, Ohio, and raised three daughters, one of whom, the eldest Edna Alice Meyers, signed a page in Lina's album in 1902.

1880s autograph album that belonged to Alice Thorne while she was a teacher at Bellbrook, Ohio. The album was given to her as a Christmas present in 1882 by her "Primary Teacher".

Perhaps a reader will know of an Alice Thorne from Ohio or a nearby state who taught at Bellbrook, Ohio, in the early 1880s.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains 26 pages signed by Alice's friends and pupils, as well as several floral plates interspersed throughout. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

1883-1903 autograph album that belonged to Lillie Wolf of Steuben, Ohio.

Hattie E. Mead presented the album to Lillie.

The album is approximately 5-1/2" x 3-1/2'' and contains 35 pages signed by Lillie herself, her relatives and friends. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

It appears that Lillie's autograph album came to light again at some point around 1903, after her 1892 marriage to Sanford Rusk, when her son Elmer Rusk took the opportunity to write in it. The message is confusing as he implies that Lillie is single, but perhaps he was pretending to be a signer in her album in the same vein as her contemporaries had 20 years earlier.

From online research, hopefully correct, Lillie Wolf was born about 1862. One of the signers called herself Lillie's mother, Jennie E. English, who signed her page at Danville, Illinois in 1892. Jennie had either remarried or, as she signed her page after Lillie's marriage, could have been Lillie's mother-in-law, with the surname of a later marriage.

Two of Lillie's siblings signed pages in her album. Sister Etta Wolf signed a page at Danville, Illinois, in 1892.

Lillie's brother P. J. Wolf signed two pages in her album. In one he indicated that he was working as a brakeman, and in the other gave the number of his Baltimore and Ohio caboose as 1646.

An earlier post featured the 1880s autograph album of Vinnie's future husband, Benjamin Franklin Gasche of Pettisville, Ohio, who then went by the name of Frank B. Gasche.

Vinnie's album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains the sentiments of over 70 of her relatives, friends and schoolmates. Many pages feature Victorian scraps. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Vinnie penned the first page in the album on 3 February 1884.

Vinnie Blanche Shaffer was born 13 November 1872 at Tedrow, Ohio, the daughter of John J. and Fidelia Elenor (Boyers) Shaffer. Vinnie's father signed a page in her album and gave his address as Spring Hill, Ohio.

Vinnie's brother Ross Shaffer signed a page on 26 June 1888.

Many of Vinnie's other relatives signed pages in her album, as indicated in the list below. Several ministers and teachers also signed pages.

Vinnie married Benjamin Franklin Gasche on 22 December 1891. He was born 9 March 1868 at German, Ohio, the son of George and Catherine (Horneberger) Gasche. I assume he still went by the name of Frank in his adult life, but I'm not sure.

One of the several loose Victorian scraps in the album is signed on the reverse by Fern Gasche, a daughter born to Vinnie and Frank in 1894. Fern lived to nearly 100 years of age. Fern had an older sister Emma.

The title page above bears the faint name and sentiments of Lorinda Jones, Mollie's older sister.

The album is approximately 5-1/2 x 3-1/2" and contains about 40 pages signed by Mollie's relatives, schoolmates and friends. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Mollie Jones was born 27 January 1877 at Rose Hill, Ohio, the daughter of Francis Meridan and Elizabeth Jane (Manning) Jones, both Ohio natives.

Other siblings signed pages in her album. Sister Libbie signed at least one page, if not two.

Mollie's older brother Franklin Meridian Jones, "Frank", signed a page on 1 November 1889.

There were two others signers who may have been Mollie's siblings: Maggie and Emma.

Sadly, Mollie died in 1895 within a couple days of the death of her father, leading me to wonder if they succumbed to a sickness going around.

Two of Mollie's teachers signed pages in her album. Ollie Grissom signed a page at New Weston, Ohio, on 29 April 1889.

Teacher E. E. Lowry of Rose Hill signed a page on 31 October 1889.

1880s autograph album with signers mostly from Waltham, Massachusetts.

No owner's name present, though one signer indicated a cousin relationship. This was H. S. Hoyt of Wilton, Maine, who signed a page at Waltham, Massachusetts, on 28 October 1880.

Most of the pages in the album were signed in the early 1880s, one even in 1879. Then, as if the album lay dormant for a while, signatures started up again in 1887.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains about 40 pages signed by people mostly from Waltham, Massachusetts. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

The first signed page in the album was penned by Gertrude M. Hoyt of Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1879. She may have been the album owner, or perhaps it was one of her sisters, Eleanor or Alice, or a cousin.

If the owner were one of the three Hoyt sisters, I'd lean toward Eleanor, who was born about 1863, as one of the signers mentioned belonging to the Class of 1880, though it's possible that Gertrude graduated a bit early.

It was G. V. Wait who mentioned "Class of 1880/

Another Hoyt signed a page in the album. George Leslie Hoyt signed a page on 27 May 1887, when he was living at or visiting New York. By 1893 he had set up a drug store at Waltham, Massachusetts. He was another Hoyt cousin with Maine ancestry.

The album is approximately 5-1/4" x 3-1/4" and contains pages signed by 16 people, including George himself, who signed the first end paper shown above. Sadly, he didn't include his surname and address.

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to Cora Miller of Sugartree, Ohio, in Guernsey County. She signed the first page in the album and noted that it was purchased on 28 May 1888.

Farther along in the album there's a page written in a fancy script with the name Cora Miller. I don't know if Cora penned this page herself or if it was written in her honor.

The album is approximately 7-1/2" x 5" and contains the sentiments of 75 of Cora's relatives and friends, some of whom signed more than one page. Many pages have wonderful Victorian scraps pasted on them.

Cora Miller was born 21 October 1870 in Ohio, the daughter of Mason and Maria Jane (Dawson) Miller. Her father was born in Harrison County, Ohio, and her mother in Newcomerstown, Ohio, in Tuscarawas County.

Cora's California death record gives her middle name as Bell. I found an online tree that gave her name as Cora Sarah Miller.

Finding Cora's family was helped by the fact that several of her siblings signed pages in her album; two of them signed more than once.

Cora's younger sister Miss Liza Miller of Sugartree, Ohio, signed a page on 28 May 1888, the day Cora bought her album. She also signed facing pages farther on in the album.

Cora's older sister Miss Hattie Miller of Sugartree, Ohio, also signed a page on 28 May 1888.

Cora's married older sister Mary (Miller) Bumgardner of Kimbolton, Ohio, signed a page on 18 June 1888. Most records I found for her husband, G. W. Bumgarner, spell his name without the "d", as did he in the pages he signed in Cora's album.

Cora's younger brother Perry Milton Miller signed a page.

Cora's youngest sister Stella [Estella] of North Salem, Ohio, signed a page on 25 December 1890.

On 10 January 1893, Cora married Neal E. Kane. He was born 26 January 1867 in Pennsylvania. They lived in Ohio, Michigan and California, where they died, Cora in 1951, and Neal in 1954.

They raised at least three children, two daughters and a son.

The album is a small one, approximately 4-1/4" x 2-1/2" and contains many pages of writing, but I can decipher names on only 36 of them. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

George Everett Zeh was born 8 July 1871 in Dearborn County, Indiana, the son of John and Harriett Ann (Powell) Zeh, who were born in Bavaria and in Indiana, respectively.

Everett's mother Harriet was the first person to sign a page in his album, on 25 December 1883; perhaps the album was her Christmas present to him.

Everett's two older sisters, Olive Ann Zeh and Louella T. "Ella" Zeh, signed pages in his album on that same Christmas Day.

Everett's aunt and two cousins and possibly others signed pages in his album. Those who expressed a relationship to Everett on their page were Aunt C. S. C. of Ouray, Colorado, and cousins Lucy of North Vernon, Indiana, and Emma Holtegel who signed at Dillsboro, Indiana.

On 30 November 1901 in Hamilton County, Ohio, Everett married Bertha Lucretia Chisman, daughter of James Ross Chisman and Nancy Jane (Huffman) Chisman. Bertha was born 3 January 1882 in Dearborn County, Indiana.

Bertha signed a page in Everett's album on 31 January 1902, after their marriage.

By the time of the 1920 Census, Everett and Bertha and four children were living at Aurora, Indiana. Everett was working at a Wheel Works plant. They had five children in all, a son and four daughters.

An especially meaningful page was signed by their granddaughter Bertha Mae Colen in 1931. Her parents were Florence Louella (Zeh) Colen and husband Edward Colen.

Everett died in 1928.

1880s/1890s Autograph Album that Belonged to May of Indian Hill, Ohio

1880s/1890s autograph album that belonged to a May who lived in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, possibly at Indian Hill. Many of the autographs were signed around 1884 to 1887. One was signed in 1898 and another in 1899.

It appears that a page or more in the front of the album may be missing. One of these missing pages may have included May's surname. There are two clues to her identity in the album, a page signed by her sister Nettie and a page signed by her aunt Mary E. Leach. Neither Nettie nor Mary gave a residence.

The album is approximately 7" x 4-1/4" and contains pages signed by 24 people and two calling cards. The album is interspersed with plates of floral illustrations, and many of the pages, signed or not, have Victorian scraps pasted on them.

An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

I found more than one instance of a May in the Cincinnati area with a sister named Nettie. Hopefully a reader with knowledge of siblings May and Nettie with an Aunt Mary in or near Hamilton County, Ohio, will happen by and leave a comment to solve the mystery.

The name of the first signer was very difficult to read. She may have been Carrie M. Cole, who penned her page on 9 November 1884.

Harry Nelson signed a page on 26 April 1885.

Mrs. W. H. Norris signed a page on 27 January 1885.

Z. T. Demar signed a page on 27 April 1885. He indicated that he was May's former teacher. I'm assuming he was Zachary Taylor Demar who became an Ohio school superintendent.

Maggie Thompson of Williamsburg, Ohio, signed a page on 28 December 1899.

S. J. Galloway signed a page at Montgomery, Ohio, on 8 November, with no year written.

B. F. Adams signed a page on 2 June 1885.

Mary Leach signed a page and inscribed it to her niece. Her middle initial might have been E.

Lizzie P. Galloway signed a page on 7 November 1884.

Lou Meier signed a page.

William Galloway signed a page on 7 November 1884. His middle initial might have been H.

1880s Autograph Album of Ernest P. Richmond of Augusta, New York

1880s autograph album that was presented to Ernest P. Richmond by his father Isaac Perry Richmond on Christmas Day in 1881.

Many of the signers were students at Knoxboro Union School at Knoxboro, New York. One was a member of the Class of 1884 at Colgate Academy at Hamilton, New York.

The album is approximately 6-1/4" x 3-3/4" and contains pages of the sentiments of nearly 80 of Ernest's relatives, schoolmates and friends. An alphabetical list of the signers appears at the end of this post.

Ernest P. Richmond was born 10 October 1865 at Augusta, New York, the son of Isaac Perry Richmond and Adelaide V. (Powers) Richmond.

About 1889, Ernest married Alice Mae "Allie" Tooke, daughter of Michael Tooke III and Sedate (Clark) Tooke. Allice was born 2 August 1866 at Munnsville, New York.

On 16 January 1882, at Bouckville, New York, Allie signed a page in future husband Ernest's album. Interestingly, Allie's page has another name written in pencil upside down, that of Ralph Leigh Richmond, the son she would have with Ernest, born on 13 April 1890. Ralph's entry was made on 4 May 1890 at Augusta Strip, New York. Perhaps Ernest or Allie penned the entry.

Sadly, Ralph Leigh Richmond died on 2 March 1911 at Knoxboro, New York.

Several of Ernest's cousins signed pages in his album, including self-described "double cousin" George Gaylord, who signed his page at Knoxboro, New York, on 22 February 1885.

One signer identified himself as Ernest's schoolmate, E. Burleson, a member of the Class of 1884 at Colgate Academy, who signed on 28 December 1881. He may have been a schoolmate at Knoxboro Union School or perhaps Ernest himself spent some time at Colgate Academy.

It's likely that the F. M. Schermerhorn who signed a page at Knoxboro Union School on 15 February 1882, was teacher Frances M. (Lyon) Schermerhorn.
