Pelayanan farmasi yang baik akan mendukung keberhasilan suatu terapi, sehingga berhasilnya suatu terapi tidak hanya ditentukan oleh diagnosis dan pemilihan obat yang tepat, tetapi juga kepatuhan (compliance) pasien untuk mengikuti terapi yang telah di tentukan. Kepatuhan pasien ditentukan oleh beberapa hal antara lain persepsi tentang kesehatan, pengalaman mengobati sendiri, pengalaman dari terapi sebelumnya, lingkungan (teman dan keluarga), adanya efek samping obat, keadaan ekonomi, interaksi dengan tenaga kesehatan (dokter, apoteker dan perawat), serta informasi penggunaan obat dari apoteker. Akibat dari ketidakpatuhan pasien pada terapi obat yang diberikan antara lain adalah kegagalan terapi, terjadinya resistensi antibiotika, dan yang lebih berbahaya adalah terjadinya toksisitas. Hal tersebut akibat dari kurangnya informasi dan komunikasi antara tenaga kesehatan dengan pasien. Konseling merupakan proses pemberian kesempatan bagi pasien untuk mengetahui tentang terapi obatnya dan meningkatkan kesadaran penggunaan obat dengan tepat. Pemberian informasi obat dapat diberikan melalui proses konseling. SNOB, DUMB, SMART

Ketika saya membeli sebuah SMARTPHONE, saya ternyata tidak terlalu SMART. sebab, yang membuat saya membeli ternyata hanya supaya terlihat keren, pakai IPHONE, BLACKBERRY, atau GALAXY seri terbaru, sementara itu, saya tidak tahu cara memakai fitur-fitur yang ada. tapi, ketika saya beli barang keperluan sehari-hari, saya pergi ke tempat belanja yang memungkinkan saya dapat harga termurah.
Secara umum, saya suka membagi orang jadi tiga tipe:
Pertama, SNOB. suka barang mahal supaya kelihatan hebat. orang ini acap kali kurang tahu produk yang dia beli, tapi yang penting lebih mahal daripada yang dibeli orang lain. mereka lebih tertarik atau bisa menghargai manfaat emosional

Kedua, DUMB. pokoknya beli barang yang murah. bukan lantaran tak mampu saja, tapi kadang memang pelit. yang penting produk yang dibeli memenuhi asa fungsional dan harganya tidak mahal. kebiasaan yang menunggu sale dilakukan supaya dapat harga terbaik.

Ketiga, yang SMART. tipe seimbang dalam mempertimbangkan sebuah produk. bisa menghargai manfaat emosional selain yang fungsional. orang SMART punya pengetahuan yang cukup dalam membandingkan antara GET dan TOTAL GIVE.
Harga Murah percuma kalau manfaat fungsional dan emosionalnya tidak memadai.
Harga Murah percuma kalau biaya MAINTENANCE-nya mahal.
harga murah percuma kalau harga satuan variable pada waktu pemakaiannya juga mahal.
harga mura percuma kalau produk gampang rusak.

pada dasarnya dia bisa menghitung total GIVE-nya sama dengan PRICE PLUS OTHER EXPENSES. dengan demikian, orang SMART lantas bisa menghitung VALUE sesungguhnya yang dia terima
pada contoh tersebut orang yang sama dengan saya bisa jadi SNOB, DUMB dan SMART sekaligus, bergantung pada produk yang dibeli. Tapi, yang menarik, semakin dunia mengalami internetisasi orang akan semakin jadi SMART.

Yang SNOB pun akan jadi THE SMARTER SNOB, artinya? kemampuan berhitung paket manfaat fungsional dan emosional apa yang akan mereka terima, walaupun titik beratnya ada pada emosional.
merekapun akan membandingkan antara paket itu dan harga yang mahal yang mereka bayar. misalnya, apakah harga mahal yang dia bayar sudah setara dengan manfaat emosional yang mereka terima

Mereka bisa melakukan kalkulasi moneter terhadap suatu benefit abstrak yang diterima. sedangkan orang yang DUMB juga akan jadi THE SMARTER DUMB.
Orang pasti akan semakin smarter. karena itu, jangan menipu atau menyembunyikan apapun dari mereka. (Herman K)

HERBAL MEDICINES IN PREGNANCY & LACTATION
Exposures to over-the-counter products are frequent in pregnant women. Perhaps this is a paradoxical response to the decreased use of prescribed medications during pregnancy for fear of teratogenicity. For many women, natural health products such as herbal medicines or supplements may seem a reasonable alternative as the lay media often portrays natural medicines as safe. While the true incidence of natural product use in pregnancy is not known, some studies suggest that as high as sixty percent of pregnant women use natural therapies including herbal medicines either during pregnancy or while planning.1 Pregnant women often consider the use of natural products such as peppermint tea or ginger to help with symptoms of pregnancy such as nausea and vomiting 2 In one study of midwives practicing in North Carolina, half of the respondents admitted to recommending herbal medicines to their patients for pregnancy related conditions. 3 Further to this intended use, it must be remembered that nearly half of all pregnancies are unplanned and unexpected exposures to medicines and supplements in the first trimester are not rare.
