Welcoming a newborn into your home is a beautiful, emotional, and often overwhelming time. When it comes to preparing for an in-home newborn photography session, the good news is this: your home does not need to be perfect. In fact, lived-in, real spaces are what make these sessions so meaningful and timeless.

Here are a few simple tips to help you feel prepared—without adding stress to your already full days.

The most important element for a newborn session is natural light. Before your session, notice which rooms get the best light during the time of day I’ll be photographing. Bedrooms, nurseries, and living rooms are often perfect.

You don’t need to deep clean your entire house—just aim to clear surfaces near windows where we might photograph.

2. Declutter Just a Little

A quick tidy goes a long way. Think:

  • Nightstands
  • Coffee tables
  • Dresser tops
  • Floors near windows

If it doesn’t belong in a photo, feel free to place it in a drawer, basket, or closet. I’m always happy to help move things around once I arrive.

4. Turn Up the Heat

Newborns love warmth. Keeping your home a little warmer than usual will help your baby stay comfortable and relaxed during the session—especially if we do any swaddled or skin-to-skin images.

5. Have Baby Essentials Nearby

Before we begin, it’s helpful to have:

  • Extra diapers and wipes
  • A pacifier (even if you rarely use it)
  • Burp cloths
  • A swaddle or two you love

We’ll take breaks as needed—there’s no rush.

6. Feed, Cuddle, Repeat

A full baby is a happy baby. Feeding just before (or even during) the session is completely okay. Newborn sessions are slow, gentle, and baby-led. Crying, feeding, and soothing are all part of the story—and never a problem.

7. Trust the Process

One of the most important things you can do is simply relax. I’ll guide you gently, help with positioning, and watch the light so you don’t have to. Some of the most beautiful images come from quiet, in-between moments you might not even notice at the time.

]]> Welcoming a new baby into the world is a magical experience, and capturing those fleeting first moments through newborn photography is something you’ll cherish forever. However, one of the most common questions parents ask is when is the best time to take newborn pictures?

As a professional newborn photographer, I’ve had the joy of photographing countless babies at different stages, and I can tell you—timing makes a difference! While there’s no wrong time to capture your little one, certain ages bring different types of images and experiences. Let’s dive into the best timeframes for newborn photos and what you can expect at each stage.

The Ideal Time: 6 to 14 Days Old

The first two weeks after birth are widely considered the golden window for newborn photography, typically between days 6 and 14. Here’s why:

Sleepy and Curled Up Poses

During this time, newborns are still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to gently pose them in those beautiful, womb-like positions. Their muscles haven’t fully stretched out yet, so they naturally curl up, which makes for those classic, cozy newborn shots.

Smooth, Soft Skin

Newborns at this stage usually have clearer skin, as baby acne and peeling often appear later. Therefore, their delicate, soft features are perfect for close-up portraits.

Less Startle Reflex

Babies in their first two weeks have a stronger sleep cycle and a less active Moro reflex (startle reflex), meaning they won’t flinch or move as much when being gently posed.

Easier Transitions

During a session, I often gently move and pose the baby while they sleep. In the first two weeks, they tend to settle back into sleep more quickly, making transitions between poses smoother.

Best for: Classic posed newborn photography, and soft, dreamy images.

Weeks 3-4: A More Awake Baby

If you’ve missed the 5–14-day window, don’t worry! Weeks 3-4 still offer great opportunities for newborn photos, just with slightly different expectations.

More Open-Eyed Shots

Around three weeks, babies start becoming more alert and opening their eyes more frequently. If you’d love some beautiful awake shots with eye contact, this is a great time.

Slightly Less Curled Poses

By this stage, your baby will start stretching out more, so the super curled-up poses may not be as easy to achieve. However, we can still capture gorgeous swaddled shots, natural poses, and candid family moments.

Baby Acne & Peeling May Appear

Some babies develop baby acne or skin peeling around this time. Don’t worry—this is completely normal! As a photographer, I use soft lighting and gentle retouching to ensure your baby’s skin looks natural and beautiful.

Best for: More interactive images with eye contact, swaddled shots, and natural newborn moments.

1-2 Months Old: More Expression & Connection

While traditional newborn photography is typically done within the first month, some parents prefer to wait until their baby is 4-8 weeks old. This timeframe brings a different, yet equally beautiful, experience.

More Smiles & Expressions

By 4-6 weeks, babies start showing tiny smiles, adorable expressions, and little personality quirks. These make for heartwarming images!

Stronger Connection with Parents

At this stage, your baby is more aware of their surroundings, meaning we can capture precious interactions between parents, siblings, and the baby.

Limited Posed Shots

While older newborns can still be gently swaddled, their flexibility is different from a 10-day-old, so posed newborn shots may be trickier. Instead, I focus on capturing natural moments, snuggles, and candid family connections.

This is best for: Lifestyle newborn photography, awake moments, expressions, and family-focused images.

3-6 Months: A New Milestone

Although not traditionally considered newborn photography, many parents opt for a 3-6 month milestone session instead of early newborn pictures. Here’s what makes this stage special:

Big Smiles & Personality

At three months, babies begin smiling more intentionally, making for the sweetest, joyful images.

Tummy Time & Gentle Sitting Poses

By four to six months, babies start lifting their heads during tummy time and may even begin sitting with support—this adds a beautiful variety of poses!

Stronger Bonding Moments

At this age, babies start responding more to parents, making for gorgeous interaction shots full of connection and love.

Best for: Joyful expressions, tummy time, family snuggles, and natural lifestyle portraits.

There’s no wrong time to take newborn pictures—it all depends on what kind of memories you’d like to capture.

Classic, curled-up newborn poses? Schedule your session within the first 5-14 days.
Awake moments and expressions? Consider 3-4 weeks old.
Big smiles, connection, and interaction? Try 6 weeks to 3 months.
Baby milestones and tummy time? Wait for 3-6 months.

No matter when you choose to do your newborn pictures, these images will become treasured keepsakes of your baby’s earliest days.

To ensure availability, it’s best to book your newborn pictures during your second or third trimester. Since babies arrive on their own schedule, I pencil in your due date and adjust as needed once your little one arrives.

Stay Flexible: Babies arrive on their own schedule! Regardless of whether your little one comes early or late, I adjust my calendar to fit your new timeline.

Relax & Enjoy: The best newborn photos come from a stress-free, cozy environment. I create a calm, baby-led session where your little one’s comfort is the top priority.

It feels like 2024 just began, and yet here I am, sitting down to write the annual recap of the year. 2024 was a wonderful year, both personally and professionally, and I am so grateful to everyone who made that possible this year. This year, I documented so many special moments for my clients and enjoyed a beautiful trip with my family. I spent the year surrounded by love and it could not have been more meaningful for me.

NAPCP International Image Competition

One of my biggest achievements in 2024 was having two of my photographs recognized in the NAPCP International Image Competition. I was granted a Merit for the two photos below. This Spring:

During the start of the spring, I had the chance to capture so many special sessions for my clients. From graduation sessions among the blossoms at the Boston Public Garden to maternity and newborn sessions at home, my clients had some of the biggest moments of their lives. While I captured my first courthouse elopement and summer session along the river, I was also preparing for our upcoming summer trip to Spain. Our spring was quiet but full of these big moments for my clients. I’m honored to have been a part of them all.

A Year in Review: a look back on 2024 with Boston Family Photographer Helena Goessens Photography

This Summer:

This summer, I participated in Jackie Rueda’s online scavenger hunt. Jackie is a photographer in Montreal (and she has an incredible photography school), but she is from Venezuela and speaks Spanish. She hosts this game where we photograph a list of items during the summer and at the end of of the season, you create a collage to show off your images. I won this year and am very happy! This game connected me to many other Spanish speaking photographers from all around the world, so it was a lot of fun. I’m so proud of my beautiful collage of social moments from the summer!

Mallorca

The highlight of this summer was our trip to Mallorca and Barcelona! We used to live there for a couple of years when the kids where little and this summer, we had the chance to visit again. It was such a special trip, filled with delicious food – and great family time. Though it was hot and sunny, we all loved it and I couldn’t put my camera down! Both cities are AMAZINGLY beautiful!

This Fall:

If you’ve been following along on the blog for a few weeks, you probably already know that fall was an incredibly busy time for me! I had the joy of capturing so many beautiful families around Boston at some of my favorite spots. It was a beautiful season with gorgeous colors everywhere you looked, sun, and nice weather. Thankfully I was able to fit many sessions in with the beautiful weather – but I will say, it’s been very dry with NO rain since September!

The End of the Year: 2024

Our annual family photo session was taken here in Boston at Larz Anderson Park (where I love to photograph families during the fall). But it is a different story when you have to be in front AND behind the camera! Very stressful! But, I love how our family’s photos came out and I’m so happy to have another year of memories to add to the wall.

We are going to spend this holidays with family! My husband’s brother and his family (wife, niece and nephew) are coming from Germany and we are going to spend Christmas and new year together. We are also going to spend a few days in NYC. Our entire family is very excited to be together for the holidays. I hope each of you have a wonderful holiday season with those you love, too!

2024 has been such a successful year because of each and every one of you. I’m so grateful to you for making my business a reality for yet another year. Capturing your special memories and becoming a part of your families (in my own way) is so incredibly special to me. Thank you for making 2024 so great! I can’t wait to see where 2025 takes us!

]]> I’m so excited to be sharing this beautiful portraits session with you today! It was perhaps one of my most challenging this fall. Little ones can be unpredictable. Sometimes my sessions with young babies can be great – and other times, its requires I be a bit more creative and agile. This little girl kept me on my toes during their gorgeous fall family photos in Larz Anderson Park this year. She was cute but was NOT about having her picture taken. But, by the end, I got some gorgeous smiles out of her and her parents! It was all worth it (like it always is!).

When I look back on this session, I think about the trust this family had in me to make these photos something special for them all. These are some of the first family photos of them with their little girl showing off her newest and greatest milestones. It was important that we capture something that would document this time in their lives. I appreciated them believing in me – and knowing that we would create something magical! With the gorgeous colors at Larz Anderson Park and a happy family in the most beautiful outfits, how could we not?!

I always remind my families to let the process happen. No matter what, we’ll capture something you’ll treasure forever – even if it’s a grumpy pout from your little one or all smiles. In these moments, I lean on your natural interactions as a family, extra snuggles, and fun games. In the end, you may just wind up with a beautiful session like this one!

Coordinating their session took a bit of work since both girls are busy with hockey – and we had to reschedule due to rain, but we lucked out! The day we finally settled one was so gorgeous and perfect for their family photos!

Fall Family Portraits at Larz Anderson Park

As you might have seen on the blog, Larz Anderson Park was a popular location for family photos this fall. Once you scroll though this family’s session, it will be abundantly clear why. This park is a staple in the Boston landscape – and it is always stunning. The day of this family’s session, we had pleasant weather and yet the most gorgeous yellow and orange foliage! I loved the sage green, white, and browns that they chose for their outfits. I think they coordinated perfectly with the season.

Their daughters were so sweet with me! Since they’re older, I didn’t have to chase anyone down for a photo, and they were more than willing to hug and snuggle up with their parents. It was so perfect! I made sure to still include some fun prompts, like getting them to run through the trees – it always results in the most perfect natural laughs and smiles. I absolutely adored working with this family and I hope it’s the first of many sessions together!
