Lisport testing may assist facility managers and owners in the artificial turf procurement process

AUSTIN, TX (May 8, 2012) – Matrix® Turf, by Hellas Construction, displayed exceptional durability during tests performed in April by OFI – Austria’s largest cooperative testing and research institute. Lisport testing was performed on the sample in increments of 5,000 cycles – each cycle equivalent to one hour of use with cleated shoes. The test is designed to simulate wear on synthetic surfaces, and in this case, specifically for high-traffic artificial athletic fields.

OFI ran 60,000 cycles of Lisport testing on a new sample of Matrix® Turf and observed minimal signs of damage. These results serve as just one point of comparison for potential buyers when considering purchasing a synthetic athletic field. The turf fibers represent about 15% of an artificial athletic field. The quality of the playing surface also depends on the base, drainage, pads and infill. Additionally, one should carefully evaluate construction and installation quality, along with warranty and support, and speak with several references before awarding a contract.

“We’ve invested a lot into the development of our Matrix® Turf systems. We continually improve the yarn and manufacturing process, and I’m pleased to see such exceptional results,” said Reed J. Seaton, CEO of Hellas Construction, Inc. “It substantiates our commitment to quality.”

Established in 1946, OFI is an accredited testing laboratory for chemistry and technology. The Lisport machine is recognized as the industry standard for testing synthetic surfaces, and conforms to the “FIFA Quality Concept for Football Turf Handbook of Test Methods” (May, 2009 edition).

Hellas Construction, Inc. is an Austin, Texas-based manufacturer and supplier of synthetic sport surfaces, and the only fully integrated sport contractor to manufacture, construct, install, warrant, and maintain synthetic sport surfaces for field (football/soccer), track, and tennis. Hellas to build and install quality sports surfaces for Whitnall and Oak Creek High Schools

AUSTIN, TX (April 27, 2011) –– Turnkey operation, quality, service, and made in America; means new territories for Hellas Sports Construction. Hellas offers a unique business model by bringing customers a turnkey contractor for all surfacing needs, a model that’s been well received in new regions. After a tough year with limited school funding and budgets, a cautious improvement is seen in the market place. Athletics and administrators do their homework and discover the importance of quality construction and installation in order to maximize budgets for their athletic facilities.

Whitnall School District in Greenfield, Wisconsin is getting a completely new stadium facility for its High School. The Matrix® synthetic turf system containing pea-gravel instead of sand, works very well in a colder climate by providing no compaction and quicker drainage of the field. Matt Karshana, Director of Facilities, Whitnall, said the school district interviewed three different companies. “I liked the Matrix turf system, it made sense, as well as the combination of turf, track and construction services from one provider “ said Karshana. The school also selected the epiQ Tracks™ S200 product for their new running track from Hellas’ portfolio.

Oak Creek High School, 10 miles down the road from Whitnall HS, will also get a Matrix synthetic turf field installed this summer. Newsweek Magazine has recognized Oak Creek High School as a top high school in the country based on student participation in AP courses. Now they are adding a home field advantage by installing the Matrix turf system – but, not against Whitnall!

Hellas is scheduled to start Whitnall HS towards middle of May and Oak Creek shortly there after. “If the weather cooperates we will have our first event on the field at the end of August,” said Karshana.

Hellas is concurrently servicing 48 projects nationwide. Maintaining and reinforcing a workforce that can coordinate and deliver on even the most ambitious plan is a constant objective at Hellas. The company has orchestrated a group of incredibly talented individuals that work together to innovate, manufacture and install the highest quality products in the industry.

Hellas Sports Constructions’ client base include many prominent organizations and educational institutions such as: Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Baylor University, Northern Arizona University, University of Georgia, Idaho University, Idaho State University, The Alamodome, University of North Carolina, The Cotton Bowl, The Alamobowl, The Sun Bowl, The International Bowl and the NFL Experience.

Huntington University Embraces Greener Technology, Higher Quality and a Performance Track for Athletes and Students

Hellas Sports Construction chosen to improve Huntington University’s track and field facility with epiQ Tracks™ Z5000

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Hellas Sports Construction is set to begin renovations this summer on Huntington University’s athletic and recreational track facility. The project is the next phase of the university’s capital campaign publically launched in 2010. The University will install a new outdoor running track which will improve the ability of the men’s and women’s track teams to train and will enhance recruiting opportunities. In addition, the new epiQ surface will be available to all students for fitness training.

Huntington University has been working hard to raise funds for all the improvements. “We’re thrilled to be able to move forward with another piece of the capital campaign projects. A new track facility is one of our biggest athletic facility needs, so we’re excited that it’s going to become a reality. It will be a tremendous benefit for training, competing and recruiting for our track and field programs as well as another fitness option for our entire student body,” said Lori Culler, Athletics Director.

Huntington University selected Hellas Sports Construction’s top product: EPIQ TRACKS Z5000, an IAAF approved and Olympic caliber product. “I am very excited and looking forward to the new track and field area being constructed. It will once again allow us to host large meets, but more importantly, it will provide a great training facility for our student-athletes. I am going to enjoy watching the construction by Hellas,” said Tom King, Track Coach for Huntington University.

EPIQ TRACKS recently launched a new and greener product line with proprietary formulas providing better performance characteristics. Notably, almost all polyurethane track formulas have been based on technology that dates back to the early 1960s. EPIQ TRACKS products now offer high performance components and a sustainable manufacturing process using extensively non-petroleum based materials. This makes EPIQ the most eco-friendly track surfacing system in fifty years.

“These are improvements that resonates with the Track and Field community,” said Bob Allison VP of Track operations at Hellas Sports Construction. “It is rewarding when our research and development efforts become reality by improving the final product for the athletes, we are pleased to be installing our very best product for Huntington University, it will be a first-class facility, “ Allison continued.

About Huntington University

Many artificial grass adhesives on the market today contain Isocyanates and solvents, and users are typically unaware of the health risks. “Isocyanates can be harmful if inhaled and it can cause irritation to the eyes, respiratory system and skin,” Lasse Holm, Manager for Akzo Nobel Bygglim. “Hellas has taken environmental responsibility and employee safety to the next level with the adoption of Proline.”

Unmatched in quality and environmental benefits, Proline is a one-component adhesive, eliminating the mixing of components on-site. As a result, Hellas projects offer a flexible product that isn’t dependent on the weather and will not cure hard like other adhesives. Not affected by moisture it can be applied in rain or shine.

“Proline gives us the ability to install fields both indoor and outdoor without comprising the health of our workers, it’s easy to use and the results are superior over all other products on the market,” said Bruce V. Layman, vice president of operations at Hellas Construction. “Combined with the 8-year seam rupture warranty, the only one of its kind in the world, it’s a win-win for Hellas and our customers.”

The Proline T44 is one of the product components offered in Hellas’ product line offering green initiatives, including the turf fibers, polyurethane backing and rubber infill. Hellas’ is implementing the new product practice immediately for its new clients and repeat customers.

Three Matrix® Turf Fields to be installed for Ouachita Parish, HEB ISD and Eanes ISD multi-field projects near completion

AUSTIN, Texas (March 23, 2012) – The recent surge of school districts investing in artificial grass fields and running tracks has resulted in an increase in multi-site projects for Hellas Sports Construction. The company was recently awarded the three-field project for Richwood, Sterlington, and Ouachita Parish high schools. In 2011, five multi-site installations, totalling 15 fields, were completed in time for football season. Hellas has the unique infrastructure, resources and project management to execute these projects quickly .

During the height of the season the company runs 8 construction crews, 10 synthetic field crews, and 9 track crews simultanously. “What sets us apart is our meticoulous focus on quality and integrated solutions,” says Matt Scnitzler Senior Construction Manager, “the customer likes the fact that our crews and superintendents are on-site from start to finish.”

Last year Hellas Sports Construction under tight deadlines simultaneously completed, three football fields for Desoto Parish, Louisianna. The projects required removal of previous grass surfaces, extensive excavation including a substantial storm water drainage system, major concrete work and renovation of the tracks. Insurrection™ synthetic Turf, a new product for 2011 was installed for all three fields.

Confidently, Desoto Parish decided to try the new Insurrection product despite they could not see the product installed, as it was brand new in 2011. Scott Abernathy Athletic Director at North Desoto H.S. says the fields have performed great and the utilization has increased significantly. “In the past we missed 30-40 activities per season, thanks to the Insurrection turf we have not had to cancel any activities and we had zero missed games,” says Abernathy. The school used to have an alternate practice facility they no longer use.

Lubbock ISD received 5 new synthetic turf fields and 5 new running tracks, along with major reconstruction. Lowery Field, Lubbock’s main game field received Matrix® 46 synthetic turf with an Elastic Layer underneath and a Sport Tracks® 1000 running track. Coronado, Estacado, Lubbock and Monterey High Schools also received Matrix 46 synthetic turf with Sport Tracks 300 running tracks.

Other multi-field projects so far this year include HEB ISD; Bell and Trinity HS Field and Track Renovation as well as Eanes ISD; West Ridge Middle School and Hill Country Middle School.

By Cindy Perry cindyperry@alpineavalanche.com

Alpine students will soon have a real football field and a real track.

The Alpine ISD board of trustees voted Wednesday night to renovate and update the district’s outdated Buck Stadium, a venue that other schools won’t let their athletes play on, and a field that doesn’t have a track.

Supt. Steve White and Darrell Dodds, the district’s director of Finance and Support Services, outlined the renovation plan for trustees and a small but enthusiastic audience, including Athletics Director and Coach Stacey Martin.

The stadium project will cost a maximum of $1.9 million; $1 million of that will come from the district’s non-designated fund, which totals around $3.8 million. The remaining $900,000 or less will be financed at 3.8% a year for seven years, or annual payments of $160,000. White said the district has the option to pay off the balance early. (The non-designated fund is used for such projects as construction, emergency repairs and so on.)

White, Dodds and school trustees emphasized that the project will not involve any increase in taxes or tax rates.

The stadium work could begin as early as April 1 and is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 1.

The school board also voted to award the project to Hellas Construction Co. of Austin, which installed the artificial turf at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Baylor University’s stadium and numerous other college and high school facilities.

The key portions of the renovation will involve the installation of new artificial turf, which Coach Martin and Dodds said will reduce the likelihood of injuries and will also save money by not having to reseed and water the grass that’s now on the field.

When completed, all Fightin Bucks high school and middle school football games, along with track activities, will take place at Buck Stadium. That means the school will no longer use Sul Ross State University’s Jackson Field for football games, or try to use the Sul Ross track — which White compared to running on concrete.

The refurbishment won’t result in a sports palace, White and Dodds emphasized. But they did say it will provide Alpine students — and the community — with a good, safe field.

Hellas Sports Construction Chosen to Be Part of Charlotte 49ers Football History

UNC Charlotte football program opens 2013 season on the new Matrix® turf system by Hellas Sports Construction

AUSTIN, Texas March 2, 2012 – Excitement is in the air as the Charlotte 49ers football program returns to the gridiron for the first time since 1948. Fittingly the innovative Matrix® synthetic turf system by Hellas Sports Construction has been selected as their surface of choice.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Hellas was chosen by UNC Charlotte because of its extensive football credentials and the ability to handle the entire project, from site work through turf installation and after sales service, according to Cass Ferguson, Director of Athletic Facilities and Event Operations for the Charlotte 49ers.

“Hellas Construction has the reputation for building quality football fields at the collegiate level and in the state of Texas where they know something about football,” said Ferguson. “Everything from the sub-base and drainage to the installation of the turf will be handled by Hellas.”

The new full-sized, 97,712 square foot field will feature the patented Matrix system with alternating panels of light and dark green turf every five yards. Utilized by numerous high-profile clients such as Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the Cotton Bowl, Baylor University, Idaho State, the Alamodome, and Northern Arizona University, Matrix turf is comprised of two monofilament (spinneret) yarns that are manufactured in different sizes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lights, the color combination provides exceptional light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled tuft bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.

“The Matrix turf will give us the opportunity to expand the usage of our facilities, be it different sports or different events, due to the amount of wear and tear it can sustain. The field is a part of a beautiful facility that so many people have worked hard to bring back to UNC Charlotte.”

Recently named the McColl-Richardson Field, the Charlotte 49ers on-campus 15,000-seat stadium is currently under construction and will be completed in August of 2012. The 49ers will begin NCAA play at home on Aug. 31, 2013 to begin the 11-game season as a Football Championship Subdivision independent.

Matrix®Turf, epiQ TRACKS™ X1000 chosen for brand new $12 million BG Products Veterans Sports Complex scheduled for fall completion

EL DORADO, Kansas (February 17, 2012) – Hellas Sports Construction of Austin, Texas has been selected as the synthetic turf and track provider for the $12 million BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado. Installation of the new Matrix synthetic turf and epiQ X1000 track system is scheduled to begin this summer.

The complex will serve as the home field for Butler and El Dorado High School, including the Butler Grizzlies’ six-time national champion football team. Ranked No.2 nationally in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll this past season, the Grizzlies are the only program in NJCAA history to twice win back-to-back national championships, the first time in 1998 and 1999 and most recently in 2007 and 2008.

For Butler athletic director Todd “TC” Carter, the Hellas turf and track system are a welcomed addition to his athletic department. “The Matrix turf and epiQ running track give our student athletes the best surfaces to play on and ultimately gives them the ability to be the best they can be.”

Scheduled to open this fall, the stadium will feature over 98,000 square feet of Matrix turf with permanent lines for football and soccer.

“We are excited about the state-of-the-art components at the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex including the Matrix turf and epiQ X1000 track to maximize the ability of our athletes to compete regardless of weather conditions,” said Stacy Cofer, chief advancement officer at the Butler Community College Foundation.

“Hellas Construction was selected among a competitive pool of vendors and we are proud to be associated with their top of the line products.”

The stadium is a joint project serving El Dorado public schools, Butler Community College and the city of El Dorado. Part of a larger economic development, the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex intends to host NJCAA and Kansas State High School Activities Association sporting events, fireworks shows, concerts and other community activities, and also provide space for commercial development.

Hellas’ patented Matrix turf has been utilized by numerous high-profile clients such as Dallas Cowboys Stadium and is the turf industry’s paramount product. It is comprised of two monofilament yarns that are manufactured in different sizes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lights, the color combination provides exceptional light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled turf bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.

The epiQ TRACK X1000 is an IAAF-certified, impermeable track surface made of high performance raw materials and a sustainable manufacturing process using non-petroleum based materials. A layered base-mat system, the X1000 utilizes a single case sealer (SCS), which provides a thixotropic effect with a seamless binding single layer by creating a mechanical lock with the subsequent layer. The epiQ TRACKS product line uses eco-friendly, renewable resources and do not contain solvents, heavy metals or other toxic materials.

The Matrix and epiQ products can be found at high schools throughout the state of Kansas, including Liberal High School, Halstead High School and over $11 million worth of design-build projects within the Wichita USD 259 (South High School, Northwest High School, Southeast High School, Heights High School, and East High School) that consist of five running tracks, six synthetic turf fields and thirty-two tennis courts.

For Brand New $60 Million Stadium

Matrix®Turf chosen for largest Texas high school football stadium
dedicated to one team

ALLEN, Texas (February 7, 2012) – They say everything is bigger in Texas and Allen Independent School District is no exception with construction underway on the new $60 million football stadium. Slated to open in July, the Eagles will unveil the larger-than-life facility on the industry-leading Matrix® synthetic turf system by Hellas Sports Construction.

Resembling a college-style coliseum with the sunken bowl design and generous 18,000 seating capacity, Eagles Stadium will feature over 90,000 square feet of Matrix turf with permanent lines for football and soccer and the CushDrain® elastic shock pad for improved shock absorption and drainage. Once complete, the Class 5A powerhouse will have the largest high school football stadium dedicated to one team in the state of Texas.

For Allen athletic director Steve Williams, the twenty-plus year relationship of working with Reed J. Seaton and Hellas Construction has been an enjoyable experience.

“Along with their excellent customer service and turn-key operation, I feel Hellas has the best product on the market today,” said Williams. “You hear people say they are Chevy people. Some say they are Ford people. We are Hellas people.”

Other highlights include a two-tier press box, a high-definition video replay scoreboard, outdoor plazas, a Wall of Honor, a training room for the wrestling team and an indoor golf practice area.

The stadium is part of the $119 million bond initiative that passed in May 2009, which includes a new fine art auditorium and transportation service center for the district.
A growing city of nearly 85,000 residents, the Dallas suburb has a student body of over 5,000, including a 650-member marching band, the largest in the nation.

According to Williams, the current stadium was built back in 1976 and was originally designed for a Class 3A program with a 7,200 capacity. Despite their best efforts to adapt to the school’s growth, the need for a bigger stadium was evident.

“Even after two expansions and the addition of temporary seating for 7,000, we are still unable to accommodate everyone — the fans, our concessions, the media and so on,” said Williams.

The new Matrix field will give Allen ISD the ability to rent out the facility for playoff games and band competitions, host graduation ceremonies, and even the option to be a concert venue. Williams says plans are also in the works to possibly host some high school classics and Division-II college football games.

Hellas’ patented Matrix turf has been utilized by numerous high-profile clients and is the turf industry’s paramount product.

Hellas has installed the Matrix® product in hundreds of stadiums across Texas, including Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the Alamodome, South Lake Carroll High School, Texas Tech University, Euless Trinity High School, University of Texas-El Paso, and Baylor University.
