Hermiston’s Big Investment Paying Off

HERMISTON, Oregon (November 7, 2014) – The Hermiston High School Bulldogs (8-1) will host their first playoff game this season against the streaking Sandy Pioneers (6-4) on Friday, November 7th at their modernized $4.5 million dollar Kennison Field and athletic facilities. The Bulldogs remain undefeated at home since Hellas Construction revamped the stadium in August. The Hermiston Schools Sports Booster Club raised over $1.5 million dollars in local donations and $3 million dollars in grants, and selected Hellas’ Matrix® Turf and CUSHDRAIN® E-Layer to give the Bulldogs one of the highest quality, safest, and most durable synthetic turf surfaces in the state of Oregon.

“We are very excited about this game,” said Hermiston’s Athletic Director Blaine Ganvoa. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our facility. Our community is excited to see the first playoff game on our new turf.”

The Bulldogs dominated the Pioneers 56-17 earlier in the season at Sandy, and are expected to use their home field advantage to move forward into the second round of Oregon’s Class 5A playoffs.

“We are focused on getting better one day at a time. As the Athletic Director, I think that’s what our players and coaches do. Many people say that, but it’s really our testament to our coaches and kids to stay humble and take it one day at a time.”

Besides game victories, Oregonlive recently voted Kennison Field as the “Best Preparatory Stadium in Oregon” due to the quality of their athletic facility. It received almost half of the 127 entries submitted for the contest.

“As a non-bonded project done with grants and community funding, we took some time to look at what we wanted,” commented Mike Kay, Director of Operations for Hermiston Schools. “We built a committee and set some criteria for what we were looking for. Durability, safety for student athletes and the turf of the field were the most important. As you can tell, Hellas was far and above our best selection.”

Hellas’ Matrix® Turf offers temperature reduction, traction-enhancing characteristics, superior durability, and is currently installed at venues such as the AT&T Stadium, Baylor University’s McLane Stadium, the Ron Tonkin Field, the University of California at Berkeley, and many more. The CUSHDRAIN® elastic layer improves g-max, shock absorption, and overall system safety and durability.

“What was most important for us was the quality of the product,” continued Kay. “From the elastic layer, to the carpet, to the support of the company, Hellas was first class with the way they dealt with us and the way they supported us.”

Jeff Bergevin, Hellas’ Vice-President of the Northwest Region also expressed his high regards for the Kennison Field and the school district. “We are proud to be a part of this outstanding project,” he said. “We worked hard to provide the Hermiston School District with the best possible products for their stadium. We look forward to working closely with the staff for years to come and continue to maintain the high standards of customer service that Hellas is known for.”

CAMERON, TX (October 10, 2014) — – The Cameron High School Yoemen will play their first conference home game against the Rockdale Tigers on Friday, October 10 at Yoe Field with a 7:30 PM kick-off. This will be the 60th “Battle of the Bell,” making it one of the oldest rivalries in Texas. The game will be played on Hellas Construction’s Matrix® Turf installed this summer.

Cameron ISD’s school board approved the project on May 2014. Construction for the first phase of the stadium was finalized in September. “It’s pretty impressive to pass a bid in May and be able to play your first game in such a short time span,” said Cameron ISD’s Superintendent Colin Clark. “For the average worker on the job, to the superintendent of the project and the President of Hellas, there is a great sense of pride for the quality of work that they provide.”

“We’re very excited about this game,” commented Cameron High School’s Football Coach Rick Rhoades. “It has always been very important for our community. What separates this rivalry from others is that it takes place between the two communities and not the two teams. It has been going on for so long that it is very important for us to keep the bell in our possession.”

The Yoemen will be facing a tough opponent in the Rockdale Tigers, who are currently 5-0 and second place in their conference. The Battle of the Bell is an annual football game between the cities of Cameron and Rockdale, Texas. In 1954, a railroad company donated a bell to increase the rivalry. Each year, the winner of the football game goes home with the bell and paints it with their school colors. The Cameron Yoemen have won the previous two years.

“During our State Championships in 2012 and 2013, we had the opportunity to play on many turf fields,” added Superintendent Clark. “Hellas’ Matrix® Turf was always the field we were on. So when we decided to upgrade our stadium, we knew that our athletes would play great on Matrix® Turf.”

In addition to turf, Hellas also installed its epiQ Tracks® system, as well as the visitor’s grandstands. Once the current football season is over, Hellas will proceed to the second phase of the project, which will include new home grandstands to match the visitors’ side, as well as a tennis complex and an A.D.A. approved entrance to the stadium. The project will be finalized in December 2014.

Matrix® Turf offers temperature reduction, traction-enhancing characteristics, superior durability, and is currently installed at venues such as the AT&T Stadium, Baylor University’s McLane Stadium, Angelo State University’s LeGrand Stadium, the University of California at Berkeley, and many more. Hellas’ epiQ Tracks® offer eco-friendly, non-petroleum based running track systems known for durability, system stability, and performance-enhancing characteristics that improve speed and control.

ECTOR COUNTY, TX (October 1, 2014) – Hellas Construction has completed its Matrix® Turf installation at Odessa High School’s baseball field last week, offering Ector County ISD a long life, performance-enhancing surface that will reduce the district’s water consumption. Hellas is also finalizing the installation of a new synthetic turf baseball field at Permian High School, and is mobilizing to begin the construction of two synthetic turf softball fields at Ratliff Stadium.

“Ector County ISD is absolutely thrilled to have Hellas Construction installing our turf fields for baseball and softball,” said Todd Vesely, Executive Director of Athletics. “We appreciate the thoroughness and the professionalism they have shown.”

Hellas has been continuously present in Ector County over the years. In 2006, the school district selected Hellas to perform the track installations at Odessa High School, Permian High School, and the widely recognized Ratliff Stadium, home of the Friday Night Lights movie and television series. The Ratliff Stadium is considered to be the “Mecca” and the “Epicenter of Texas High School Football” since the 80’s. During 2012, Hellas completed field installations for the Bronchos and the Panthers, and worked on field event and tennis developments for Ratliff in 2013.

“This is a special project for us,” said Reed J. Seaton, President/CEO of Hellas Construction. “We have had an unparalleled relationship with Ector County ISD over the years. It makes us extremely proud to keep coming back to Ector County and continue delivering our high-quality products that will better the performance of their athletes for years to come.”

All of the installations feature Hellas’ Matrix® Turf, a product recognized for its long life, temperature reduction, and traction-enhancing characteristics. Matrix® Turf is currently installed at venues such as the AT&T Stadium, Baylor University’s McLane Stadium, Angelo State University’s LeGrand Stadium, the University of California at Berkeley, and many more.

The Matrix® Turf fields will also make Ector County ISD more efficient in terms of water consumption, and make it less challenging to comply with the water restrictions currently present in the City of Odessa.

“Besides the athletic advantages,” Vesely continued, “we are most excited about the amount of water we’ll save. It is a great thing for our community to be saving water.”

Jack Mann, Hellas’ Project Manager, also expressed his experience with the district. “It has been great working with Ector County ISD,” he said. “Our crews are very satisfied with the district. They have been very considerate of our team, and have always made sure to show their support. We have really enjoyed working with Ector County ISD.”

The Ector County ISD board approved the installations of new synthetic turf for the four fields in December 2013. Ratliff Stadium’s softball field turf installations will be the final phase of the project, and will commence during the first week of October.

MANSFIELD, TX (September 23, 2014) – After installing six Matrix® Turf fields this summer for Mansfield Independent School District, Hellas Construction gets inducted into the Mansfield ISD 2014 Athletic Hall of Honor. The district selected the class of inductees in late July based on their commitment to improve the district’s athletics.

Debbie Weems, Mansfield ISD’s Director of Athletics, expressed the district’s satisfaction with Hellas. “We’re very happy with the work Hellas did for us this summer. Everyone takes great pride in their work. The team was very considerate of us and our staff. They were very dedicated and professional, and we really enjoyed working with them.”

Mansfield ISD established the Athletic Hall of Honor in 2013 to recognize the efforts and contributions of former student-athletes, coaches/athletic administrators, teams, and distinguished volunteers who have brought honor and excellence to the district.

“We are exceptionally proud of this achievement,” said Reed J. Seaton, President/CEO of Hellas. “We worked hard throughout this project. From the beginning, we knew how difficult it would be to complete six fields in time for football season. To be recognized in such a way for all of our hard work really means a lot to the Hellas family. As with the rest of our clients, we have done our upmost to deliver Mansfield ISD our high-quality products that will increase the performance of their athletes for many years.”

The installations at the Vernon Newsom Stadium, Mansfield, Legacy, Lake Ridge, Summit, and Timberview High Schools took eight weeks to complete. “Normally, a field is completed in at least fourteen days. We managed to finish each in less than ten days,” said Jim Bowden, one of the project’s superintendents. “It all has to do with our crews. Everyone on the team has extensive experience, knows how to perform, and how important it is to work as a team. I’m extremely proud of our crews.” With all the synthetic turf system installations now completed, the only part of the project that remains is the addition of a natural grass practice field, which will be finalized before the end of September.

Forth Worth’s Huckabee Inc. was the Architect of Record for the project. “Our crews worked great alongside Huckabee,” said superintendent Bowden. “They did a great job managing the project and were on top of things from day one. Tracy Hardcastle, Len Caddell, and the rest of the Huckabee team involved in the project always made sure to supply anything needed as we moved forward.”

Sports Design Group, an athletic field design firm headquartered in McKinney, Texas, was also part of the project. Richard McDonald, Principal Landscape Architect, was continuously on-site performing walkthroughs on the turf and provided guidance and counseling through the entire process.

With the exception of the natural grass practice field, all of the installations feature Hellas’ Matrix® Turf, a product recognized for its long life, temperature reduction, and traction-enhancing characteristics. Matrix® Turf is currently installed at venues such as the AT&T Stadium, Baylor University’s McLane Stadium, Angelo State University’s LeGrand Stadium, the University of California at Berkeley, and many more.

The relationship with Hellas began in 2012, when the district selected Hellas for the synthetic turf installations at the R.L. Anderson Stadium. Soon after its completion in May 2013, the board decided to continue the optimization of Mansfield’s football fields. In August 2013, Mansfield ISD approved the installation of new synthetic turf at five high schools, and soon after, the approvals of the Vernon Newsom stadium turf replacement and the natural grass practice field followed.

“Throughout the summer, you could go over to a project and see Tony Ballard working with his team,” expressed Weems. “When you see that sort of commitment from a leader, it speaks volumes about their character and the company. When you work with people that have such passion for their job, their products and their works, things just turn out right.”

WACO, TX (August 28, 2014) – Baylor University selected the same synthetic turf the Bears previously played on at Floyd Casey Stadium for their new $260 million McLane Stadium. Hellas Construction installed the new playing field this summer and removed the previous Matrix® Turf to be utilized in a new tailgate area.

The Baylor Bears had amazing success playing on Matrix® Turf at Floyd Casey Stadium. Baylor’s former quarterback Robert Griffin III, also known as RG3, was announced as the recipient of the 77th Heisman Memorial Trophy in 2011 becoming the first Baylor player ever to win college football’s most prestigious award. Baylor won 19 of their last 20 home games and wrapped up the preseason ranked No. 10 by the Associated Press, the highest ranking for the school in more than five decades.

“We have had tremendous success with our fields from Hellas,” said Colin Shillinglaw, Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations at Baylor University. “Floyd Casey was the best field our players ever played on. They loved it. It was the best field in America. We absolutely want that transition into McLane Stadium!”

The McLane Stadium, which inaugurates for the 2014 season this weekend, features Hellas’ 46 oz. Matrix® Turf, the same surface used at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium, University of California at Berkeley, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Angelo State University, and many others.

“There is no finer academic athletic program than at Baylor, no better college coach, no better stadium. We are proud to be part of this incredible project and could not have hoped for a better outcome,” said Reed J. Seaton, President & CEO.

Baylor selected Hellas Construction for the project after a successful run at the Floyd Casey Stadium. Hellas, who is working closely with distinguished builders Austin Commercial and Flintco, was also responsible for the Matrix® Turf installation at the practice field for Baylor’s Lineman. Populous, one of the most preeminent global stadium designers is the architectural firm on the McLane Stadium project. Andrew Elmer, Field Designer for Populous, visited the project and was impressed by what he saw in the subgrade, field installation process, and the overall quality of everything in place.

The Baylor Bears will open their 2014 season on the new synthetic turf against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs on Sunday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. CST which will be nationally broadcasted on FOX Sports 1.

Gruver ISD’s New Athletic Field Complex

GRUVER, Texas (August 6, 2014) – Gruver Independent School District selected Hellas Construction last year to design and build a baseball, softball dream complex. The school floated a bond exclusively for this $2.7 million project. The facility was completed last month and features baseball, softball, press boxes, landscaping, playground, bleachers, lights, concession stand, restrooms and a parking lot to provide sports entertainment for the school district and surrounding communities. Hellas was chosen due to their capability to design and build the entire project with their own resources, from start to finish, which was especially appealing to the district.

“This was an outstanding project,” Superintendent David Teal said. “It is a gorgeous, unique facility. Hellas Construction went above and beyond. It’s a showplace, not just a high school softball, baseball field. It’s not just a chain around a field, it has detail. The architectural elevation changes, and the use of materials makes it an experience to go to the ballpark. It’s architecturally interesting.”

The entire community of Gruver and those surrounding it seem to agree with David Teal. The teams are willing to travel to Gruver just for the opportunity to participate in the field.

“Hellas is really a leader in the field,” said Angelo State President Brian J. May. “When you start looking at Hellas and their products and the fact that they have practically put turf in every major field in the State of Texas, not the least of which the Dallas Cowboys Stadium – that to me was an endorsement in itself. Having Hellas as a partner has been a true partnership and we have enjoyed working with them.”

“Our community is extremely proud of it. This stadium is the talk of the panhandle,” added Teal.

During the bidding process, Hellas Construction was able to present the most competitive bid. “Other companies didn’t even come close,” Teal says. “Simply put, Hellas Construction offered the biggest bang for the buck, and we are extremely pleased with what they have done for us.”

Hellas Construction is known for its great premium-quality sports construction projects across the country, serving clients like the AT&T Stadium and the University of California at Berkeley. In addition to their Austin, Texas headquarters, Hellas operates several US-Based offices.

Deer Park, Texas (July 31, 2014) – After ten years, Hellas Construction has returned to Deer Park, TX this summer to install their Matrix® synthetic turf at Deer Park High School’s Abshier Stadium to provide Deer Park ISD and its athletes with a new, performance-enhancing surface. The development was finalized on July 3, 2014.

“We are very excited to have our new Hellas field in Abshier Stadium. We first came into contact with Hellas 8 years ago when we installed our first synthetic turf and were very pleased with the job they do,” Deer Park High School Head Football Coach Chris Massey said. “The E-layer system that was installed with our first turf made the conversion from old to new fast and provides a smooth playing surface that will last for years. This, along with the added protection the E-layer provides made Hellas a clear choice for Deer Park.”

Hellas installed their 46 oz. Matrix synthetic turf, giving the Deer Park Deer the privilege of playing on the same surface used by the Dallas Cowboys, the University of Texas at El Paso, the Gopher/Warrior Bowl at Grand Prairie, Texas, and the University of California at Berkeley. The Matrix® synthetic turf system is known across the country for its long life, temperature reduction, traction-enhancing characteristics, and playability optimization.

President and CEO Reed Seaton, who alongside his partner control 70% of the largest sports construction firm in America, expressed how proud he is of holding on to its customers now that it has entered its second decade of business as the fastest growing company.

“Not many companies, let alone turf companies, can say they have a ten-year relationship with the same customer,” Mr. Seaton expressed. “In an industry that is majorly owned by private equity, the ownership of those companies changes every five to seven years.”

Deer Park ISD members also commented on the convenience of Hellas’ ability to do a job from start to finish without the need for subcontractors.

“The people at Hellas have been very helpful along the entire process and would take the time to answer any and all questions we might have had,” added Coach Massey. “If you are in the market for new synthetic turf, I highly recommend you consider Hellas Construction.”

The Deer Park Deer will play their first home game against the Brazoswood High School Buccaneers on September 5, 2014 at 7 p.m. Hellas also performed turf installations at Brazosport ISD’s Hopper Stadium in 2004.

Hellas to Test MoJack Distributor’s Ozone Turf Sanitizing Cleaner

Austin, Texas (July 17, 2014) – Sports construction company Hellas is set to receive MoJack Distributors’ Clean O3 OnTurf cleaning system for field testing with the goal of further lessening the impact on the environment and increasing player safety.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to be one of the first to test MoJack’s OnTurf cleaning system,” said Reed J. Seaton, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hellas Construction. “We are familiar with the products MoJack has manufactured in the past, and expect this new cleaning system to be just as impressive.”

Through the use of ozone, or O3, the Clean O3 OnTurf cleaning system is able to eliminate 99% of the bacteria and viruses when they exist. The system is environmentally friendly, and is expected to be one of the most effective leaders in the sports field maintenance market that also contributes to player safety.
