FAREWELL SXSW...

Another year and another SXSW has come to pass. While this year wasn't as crazy as years past for myself, it was still a more historic year for hip-hop as well as the festival itself. Living in Austin all my life, I've seen the SXSW festival grow from a small event full of hippies and werid smelling rock guys to a festival that encompasses all genres of music with an ever growing list of hip-hop performers. Almost the entire 2010 XXL freshman class showed up and Texas Legends Paul Wall & Chamillionaire reunited for the first time in years to start a nationwide tour. All in all, I enjoyed SXSW not so much for myself but for my city because Lord knows things this big don't come around much in the ATX. See you in 2011!!

Don't remember the face? Well let me refresh your memory. Her name is Brooke Valentine and back in 2005 she had a hit song called "Girlfight" which featured Lil Jon and Big Boi. It also helped that Brooke was from Houston during the time when Houston was on top with Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, and Mike Jones taking over the industry. With all the stars aligned for her, having two big features on her debut single and being in the right city at the right time, you would think Ms. Valentine would be a huge star right? HELL NO!

Brooke's debut album Chain Letter underperformed despite "Girlfight" being a top 40 single on Billboard. Subsequent singles "Long As You Come Home" and "Cover Girl" failed as well, with "Long As You Come Home" peaking at number 71 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop charts. In 2006, Brooke was preparing for the release of her second album Physical Education and released "Dope Girl" featuring UGK's Pimp C who had just been released from prison. The song only peaked at number 91 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts and Physical Education was pushed back. A second single was released titled "Pimped Out" and featured Dem Franchise Boyz but only peaked at number 87 on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

After that, it seemed as if Ms. Valentine disappeared off the face of the earth. Her album Physical Education was shelved but was released as a mixtape titled Physical Education: The Mixtape in April 2009 according to Wikipedia. Since this is the first time I'm hearing of it that must mean it didn't travel far or do much for her career. The reason I made Brooke Valentine the first artist in my Where The F#%k You At?! series is because I have her song "Dope Girl" on my iPod. It's only there for the Pimp C verse but it made me wonder what happened to her. I mean she had a cute face, great body, and could sing with the best of them. Shit, she even had some good features on all her songs. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. Brooke is from Houston right? Which is hometown to none other than Beyonce herself. Fuck being under her shadow, Beyonce is a solar eclipse.
