VLOG Post: Video Review of Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice

At RealIsysMovieReviews, thus far we have only made written reviews but that changes today. We have made our first video review, we are reviewing one of the most anticipated movies of all time, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of justice. In this video review, we discus both the positives and negatives of film, while presenting it in our usual entertaining way which our audience has come to expect.

Creating this Vlog was team effort and wouldn't have been possible if every team member did not contribute. This was a real challenge as all of our team members had clashing schedules, thus limiting the amount of work we could accomplish on any single day. The general theme of the video was composite of all our ideas ( we had reject some of our initial plans as it was deemed to be unfeasible given time and technological capability constraints ). Each team members contributions are listed below.

Arya Ehteshami

Arya worked as something of director/team leader. He helped shape the initial idea as well as the general direction Vlog. He also appeared in the Vlog playing the role of very thin skinned Zack Snyder.

Manuel Perdomo

Manuel contributed to Vlog by shaping the initial ideas of the Vlog as well being one of reviewers of the film. He also brought levity and colour to the final outcome of the Vlog.

Abir Khurshied

Abir contributed to movie by working behind the scenes editing film, creating and researching some SFX as well as being one of the reviewers that appear in the Vlog.

Ken Tam

Ken contributed to movie by working behind the scenes editing the film as well as at times shooting the videos on his phone.

I think this movie is a serious production, it contains lots of attractive gun battle action, with the exquisite props, adding persuasive to the complex story, but only in the first half of a small portion of the film. The style of the movie is very wide: mediation between China and South Korea, the mainland and Hong Kong's subtle relationship, international terrorism, is entirely the model of Hollywood movie model, but the director does not create a good atmosphere to the audience, the audience most of the time followed the camera chaos rambling, bad movie edition. luckily, the famous actors support the movie with their own reputation. The total investment in this movie is about 200 million RMB, is twice of "Cold War", but not better than it. Actor, Jacky Cheung is a good actor, Wang Xueqi also have a perform well. South Korea's nuclear crisis, was pulled in Hong Kong, I personally think that the intervention of the mainland is the Hong Kong people concerned about the subject and the film's core. There are lots of action elements, but not action films,so I put it as an international political struggle Class film is more suitable, the content do not attract me a lot, but I feel a little nervous and exciting when they are treating the nuclear boom, during shooting action, car trace.

Ken's review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

" Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2" has a very entertaining and smart story, but also to stimulate the role of the relationship between the full development, with the former to maintain the same style and perception.
The core of this film is the family, whether it is action, dialogue, or the role of development, in the film are the interpretation of the meaning of the family. Sequel as long as the rocket raccoon and Baby Groot field, they will certainly take away all the limelight. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and others showed a solid and wonderful performance. Once again play Star Jesse Keith Berte showed his best level; although Suer Sultan played other large role, but Jia Nora is definitely her screen logo; former WWE professional wrestler Dave Battis has been grown as a competent actor; it is worth mentioning that Michael Rooker, he shaped (Yondu) so pleasing, so that with the story of the development and courage of the background story, this role will be heartbreaking.
Perhaps the " Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2" may not be better than the first one, but it is definitely a competent sequel, completely followed and extended the original style.

The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is a 2004 American climate science disaster film. The film depicts in a series of extreme weather events undermined the climate, it's caused global cooling and leads to a new ice age.

In this movie, climate warming cause rising of sea level, atmospheric circulation anomalies, hurricane, hail and violent weather causes widespread destruction around the world. In the face of calamity, dead is infinite amplification and the life was so fragile like an ant under the foot. But it's comforting to know people were great strength, courage, and solidarity when they get into difficulty.

The day after tomorrow is a valuable film cause it makes people think that the relationship between human and natural, it educates us to focus on environmental protection, we have one earth only, so we better start taking care of it.

Guardians of the galaxy Vol. 2 Review

When Guardians of the galaxy was first announced, everyone expected that this would be Marvel Studio’s first bomb. Yet when the movie came out, somehow it delivered exactly what the genre needed. A dose of light-heartedness, a dollop of mirth and a pinch of awesome. The rowdy, raucous spaced opera coupled with a nostalgic 80’s soundtrack burst on to the scene. Who would have thought that a movie with a bunch of crank characters, which included a talking racoon and a sentient tree who could only speak with three words, would be such a hit. Following this movie, all superhero films needed a bit of humour (cough cough Batman v Superman). DC’s Suicide Squad was reshot, recut and accompanied with 80’s soundtrack to emulate guardians. Yet was this lighting in a bottle or can James Gunn repeat brilliance again with the sequel, Guardians vol. 2.

Gunn sets up volume 2 to resolve some of the criticisms of the original film by focusing on a more character development as well as introducing a much more developed villain, in fact other than Loki, Guardians Vol. 2 might have the best developed villain in the MCU. A major part of the story revolves around the mystery of Star Lords parentage as well as the backstory of the other guardians.

Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot are amazing in this film. Background characters like Yondu and nebula are also given more screen time, hence fleshing out the universe. Kurt Russell also joins the cast as Ego, he is awesome as all ways. I think Disney and Marvel have perfect the technology of reverse aging, the flashbacks of Russell are just as he looked like in the 1970's and 80's.

One thing that sticks out to me is the humour in this film, this movie is very funny though there were some moments where the jokes just didn’t land. The action and the visuals are also very good, the opening scene is spectacle to behold.

Where guardians 2 fails is story. It feels bloated and the film definitely overstays its welcome by clocking in at a lengthy 2 hours and 20 minutes. I get the feeling that James Gunn was burnt out by the first movie but was obligated to the second one like Joss Whedon, as such similar mistakes are made.

While a rag-tag bunch of oddball characters work best when on an adventure, guardians 2 offers terrific moments of irrelevance, uncountable pop culture references, again a killer soundtrack and the frekin awesome baby groot. Thus, I’m going to give this movie a ISYS rating of 7 out of 10.

I'll be reviewing what is probably the best comedy thriller that was released in 2016. And yes, it's about superheroes again!

“Deadpool” is the cinematic equivalent of that kid in school who would always say how much he didn’t care what people thought of him, but just loud enough so everybody could hear him. It is the teenager who pretends to be too cool to care, but wants you to like him so badly it hurts. Of course, this is partially a byproduct of being a cog in the machine of the superhero movie marketing system—you unavoidably have to hit a few of the beats of the genre in order to satisfy the audience. However, “Deadpool” fails to live up to the potential of its beloved source material, subverting its own agenda by becoming a remarkably generic, by-the-numbers man-in-tights flick. “Deadpool” is about a guy who constantly pushes back against the expectations of the superhero, but the movie about him fails to match his rebellious personality. It’s a remarkably straightforward origin flick, lacking in true satire of its genre, carried almost entirely by its lead. Deadpool is a fun character, but he’s still in search of a fun movie to match his larger-than-life personality.

Fight Club

“In Tyler we trust”

“the first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club”

For those of you who have already seen this movie, you may get my reference. However, for those of you who haven’t, hurry the f*ck up and watch this goddamn masterpiece already. Never has a movie better expressed the feelings of individuals who wish to rebel against the monotony and commercialisation that western society imposes on the individual. For an entire hour, you will get to watch the slow degradation a seemingly uptight man who buys wayyyyyyyyy too much furniture turn into a philosophical psychopath who’s only desire is to bring down the system which he hates. Now if the philosophical aspect isn’t really your thing, you can just turn up to watch the bloody gore that is fight club. The visual effects seem so real that you can almost feel the sickeningly wet crunches as people beat each other’s faces into complete and utter pulp. However, above this sickening display off letting loose there is a man who rises to the top of it all. A visionary who transforms people in what they want to be. Basically, Tyler Durden is a god and we should all follow him.

Big Fish

Big fish is an America fantasy comedy-drama film based on a novel "Big Fish" by Daniel Wallace. The film was directed by Tim Burton and stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, and Marion Cotillard.

The theme of this movie is reconciliation between a dying father and his son. Big fish represents the legendary life of the father through the son's gradual understanding of his father, the son listened his father telling the story about the magical experience when he grew up, the reaction of the son from conviction, unfeeling then revulsion and rejecting when the father said. Unit the father is going to leave(dead), he trying to understand and inclusive his father, eventually help father finished the last big fish story of his life. At father's funeral, the son saw the archetypal character of those who appeared in his father's story. Father was not lying, rather, they are real people, but they were exaggerated and amplified by his father.

The son eventually passed on his father's big fish story, at the end of the movie the son said "Have you ever heard a joke so many times you've forgotten why it's funny? And then you hear it again and suddenly it's new. You remember why you loved it in the first place. That was my father's final joke I guess. A man tells his stories so many times that he becomes the stories. They live on after him. And in that way, he becomes immortal." This passage not only shows his understanding of his father's story but also a conclusion of the movie.

Grave of the Fireflies

Grave of the fireflies is a Japanese animated film by the iconic Studio Ghibli. Some consider it, the greatest animated movie of all time. If you recon that Bambi was emotional as animation gets, Let me start my saying that grave of the fireflies is like depression distilled into 90 minutes. This film evokes emotion like no other and is known as a real tear jerker.

Grave of the fireflies is based on Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. It chronicles the lives of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, following the fire-bombing of their town during the end of second world war. Following this we witness their struggle for survival, both parent-less and homeless we observe their tragedy with unsentimental intimacy. Despite the somber tone, the movie is contrasted with magical moments of natural beauty and childlike delight, thus making the tale even more harrowing.

This film is a work of art unlike no other, most modern animated films use computer generated models like Toy Story or Up. Yet studio Ghibli has stuck to hand drawn animation, this gives the film a sense of its own style. The character design are also able to make well of a sense of realism, it captures the sense of humanity frame by frame, the animation makes it feel like I’m experiencing someone else’s memories.

The English voice dubbing is surprising good in this film, the voice actors are able to convey emotion as well as capture the spirit of the characters. This is very rare anime in general, most dubs while accurate in terms of story are never able to capture the feel of the character they are portraying.

As the story goes, grave of the fireflies is a shower of emotion, the film pellets you with constantly with sadness and despair. But the film is well structed, well-paced and well told. I think if this were a western film, there would moments of light heartedness to give some sort of refuge from the deluge of sadness, yet this film has no breaks, it captures the raw devastation and the brutality war.

Some people consider this an antiwar film due to its grim nature and graphic imagery, but I disagree. I feel like this is more of a personal story which just happens to be set during war time. I feel that this film isn’t really pushing any agenda or message, it’s just a biopic. This is along the lines what the director Isao Takahata has commented on the film.

The characters being the siblings are very well fleshed out, along with the rest of the cast. They act how most people would react in such a situation, maybe that is because this film is based on real events or perhaps that it is directed by Isao Takahata as opposed to Hayao Miyazaki. but still this really is a lone example where animation is used to such a degree to exhibit such a topic. The only comparison I have is of classic Walt Disney films, they have always anthropomorphised creatures then explored such themes. Yet Takahata is able to capture such realism with animation and use it to his advantage, that it really is amazing.

This might come off as obvious but this movie is a definite must watch. Just as 101 Dalmatians and lion king are classics, Grave of the Fireflies deserves to be on that list. It is the greatest animated movie that I have ever scene and is worthy of a perfect 10 out of 10.

Movie review: V for Vendetta

Ok so first of all, this movie is incredible. Imagine an action movie had a baby with a philosophical movie, and then this baby came out as the pinnacle of movie evolution. This baby then wins a beauty contest without even entering, and beats up chuck Norris for fun with one arm tied behind his back.

To give a brief review of what happens, basically Evey Hamond is young woman forced to live with a crime fighting vigilante who calls himself V. This companionship revolutionised not only themselves, but the nation in which they live. In the movie, Hugo Weaving gives a stunning performance as V, a chivalrous yet sinister vigilante. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman portrays Evey, a broken individual who regains her integrity in a most unlikely manner.

Now for the not so dark stuff. Once you finish watching this mental org*sm of a movie, you get the feeling of finishing an essay 3 hours before it’s due. The beautiful philosophy interwoven with the bloody violence creates a visual symphony of beauty and power. For those of you who like movies like The Matrix, The Dark Knight, and Fight Club, this movie will speak to you on a spiritual level.

Ok then ladies and Gentleman of the movie-blog-reading universe, so now that we’ve been

through some absolute classics of cinema: ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Oceans Eleven’ (which you bettterrr have watched! :P), it’s time to take you to a world filled with light-hearted humour that will have you in stiches. This, my friends, is the world offff (*cue drumroll) ADAM SANDLER.

Adam Sandler’s outrageously hilarious 1995 film ‘Billy Madison’ is a classic of a different sort. It’s not exactly the type of movie that has been critically acclaimed with Oscar nominations and a sophisticated script. HOWEVER, it is the type of feel-good comedy movie that you will want to rewatch over and over again and make you think those critics who panned the movie are out of their depth.

The movie, which is directed by Tamra Davis, revolves around the protagonist Billy, played by Adam Sandler who is the heir to a Fortune 500 hotel company that his father Brian, played by Darren McGavin, has created. The only problem is that he’s not exactly the best fit to run a multi-billion dollar company. Billy, who at 27 is still leaching off his rich dad and not doing much with his life, naturally expects to inherit his dads company, however due to his careless attitude and childish antics his father threatens to pass on the reigns to the vice president Eric, played by Brad Whitford.

Coincidentally, Billy sees Eric as a massive jerk, which makes his father’s potential choice of inheritance even worse. To counteract this Billy makes a proposition to his dad: If he returns to school and passes all twelve grades in the space of twenty four weeks, he gets to run the company. If he screws up, however, his least-favourite-person, Eric, gets it.

This is where the hilarity begins.. In first grade, there are scenes where Billy uses his size and strength defeat the first graders in dodge ball but he then chills out a little when the teacher reads stories to the class. When he hits the 3rd grade, he becomes infatuated by his teacher, Miss Vaughan (Bridgette Wilson), who finds out about his mission and supports him in completing elementary school in record time. When he hits high school, however, the tide unfortunately begins to change and he is seen as a loser of sorts. He doesn’t let that discourage him though and continues to push through providing us with laughs and humor that will have you rolling.

All-in-all Sandler’s movie may not be a ‘Casablanca’ or ‘Citizen Kane’ but it is a great feel-good movie that delivers laughs continuously and is definitely something you will not be forgetting any time soon! I give it a 7/10 based on its comedic value.

The name says it all, this is the first film where we see the most iconic super heroes off all time. While we have seen countless iterations Batman and Superman in their own films, they have never appeared together in the same film. Witnessing the success of Marvels crossover movies and their shared universe, Warner Bro who owns DC decided to put their hat into the ring with Batman V Superman: Dawn of justice. Unfortunately, this film sinks under the weight of its expectation. Whereas Marvel has created a series of films, thus introducing characters, fleshing out their backstories and motivations before attempting the crossover. DC and Warner Bros are trying to use this film to springboard a so-called DC cinematic universe.

The film is set 2 years after the events of man of steel, it harkens back to that film by presenting a different perspective on superman’s colossal battle with General Zod. With metropolis and other places reduced to rubble, adding on the loss of life and the great collateral damage. The battle has left many people feeling angry and helpless. Bruce Wayne is one of these individuals, after personally witnessing the battle and losing friends, he views superman as threat to humanity thus ensuing his personal vendetta against the man of steel. Behind the scenes, Lex Luthor launches his own crusade against the caped crusader.

As much as people has ripped this film a new one, this film does have many excellent points. Ben Affleck as Batman and Jeremy Irons as Alfred are in my opinion being the ultimate portrayal of each character. The first 30 minutes of film is truly exceptional, the scene coving Batman’s Backstory with his parents dying in crime alley was a masterful example of film making. we’ve seen this part multiple times before in different batman movies, yet Zack Snyder has really made his own by portraying this scene in somber yet equally haunting manner.

Bruce Wayne’s motivations are setup and conveyed perfectly to the audience without a line of dialog or exposition, you can tell just by the atmosphere and the expression of Bruce’s face the reason for his crusade. While Gal Gadot was good as Wonder-woman, she really doesn’t have enough screen time to make any lasting effect.

What brings this film down are Superman, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is by far extraordinary odd performance, his depiction of the villain is so off key, it is borderline unwatchable. Lex Luthor is supposed to a calm and calculating villain with a swathe demeanour, who uses his business connections and his intelligence to forward his manifesto. Eisenberg’s Lex Jr. is awkward and aloof, he comes off as crazy and comical.

Cavil is cast well as superman, he both has the look as well as physique. I personally enjoyed his portrayal as superman in man of steel and enjoyed that movie. Yet, in BVS majority of his expressions has been replaced with a superman who is constantly pissed off.

Lois Lane stands in the film for one reason, she is the love interest of superman and his raison d'etre. This is the films biggest problem, Amy Adams and Henry Cavil just have no chemistry, it feels forced and uncomfortable. Adams has proven to be a very good actress and can perform in similar roles yet like Eisenberg’s Luthor and Cavils Superman, she is let down by a poor and over-bloated script along with terrible direction.

This movie is let down by trying to do too much, BVS is trying to set up the justice league (yeah I know it sounds lame when compare to the avengers), set up the DC cinematic universe (called the DCEU DC Extended universe), be the film adaption of the dark knight returns as well as (Spoiler Alert) the death of superman. The so-called fight between batman and superman only lasts 5 minutes and is disappointing at best. We see these characters fight yet we don’t experience them fighting. We love both these characters since they are so different, one is dark and brooding whereas the other is cheerful and optimistic. We want to see them fight since it is a clash of ideologies as well as contest of brawn.

Despite everything I am actually glad that I saw this movie. While it wasn’t the greatest of films, heck it wasn’t really a good film, I found some entertainment with the Ben Affleck as Batman, Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Every Batman scene was outstanding and I find myself re-watching these scenes again and again. I rate this film 6 stars out of 10.

Elysium

In the science-fiction thriller Elysium, William Blake’s prophesy has come to pass and then some. Humans not only established heaven in the desperation of hell, they have privatized it.
Earth is a toxic dustbowl, but in the sky above hangs the ultimate gated community. Elysium is a space station in the shape of a halo, the inside edge of which is covered with villas, golf courses and serene boating lakes. Within every home is a medical pod that cures all ills and freezes aging. Life there is an infinite retirement, as long as you can afford it.

The defense minister, Dracom who is a fairly responsible role, and the audience can understand why she has been so cold-blooded to kill all the poor people who have invaded the elysium.

The rich have spent a lot of money to stay, the defense minister is obliged to maintain their quality of life, and the defense minister will also maintain the purity of the world as a bliss
Max’s job is to build the police robots that keep the proletariat in check, but he puts a brave face on it: all his life, he has believed that hard work will eventually earn him a place up there among the stars.
An industrial accident causes him to think again. Radiation poisoning leaves him with five days to live, and the medical care he needs is on Elysium.
After a lot of hard work by him, he finally arrive on elysium but with certain death the only alternative, Max decides to go for glory.
This movie describes the class problems of the rich and the poor, the director is quite good at infiltration miscellaneous, satirical social races, class problems, and let the audience think after watching.I think you should have a go on this movie!

Jiamin YE's Review: Allied

Allied is a 2016 romantic thriller film directed by Robert Zemeckis

and written by Steven Knight. The two main characters are Brad Pitt

(as Max Vatan) and Marion Cotillard (as Marianne Beauséjour).

Allied looks like a movie talking about spy and war, but actually it is a love story. In the first half of the film, Max and Marianne

disguised a pair fake married couple and then they assassinated a German senior officer. In the process, they live together, going out together, developed, implemented plan of assassination and escape from danger, therefore, they fell in love with each other.

In the second half, they got married, and have a child, they have happy and quiet life in British. The wonderful time is always too short, the British government suspects that Marianne is concerned with a case of intelligence disclosure, and Max confirmed his wife is a spy, they wanna run away, in order to save Max and their child Marianne eventually committed suicide. Emotional interaction between Max and Marianne makes people feel real and touched.

In fact, looking at Max's struggle, Marianne is also painful, they are longing for warm, romantic family life, but they have to make a choice because of the war. From Marianne's amazing shot, we can see love is selfless.

Another interesting aspect is that the movie costumes, actually it is Marianne's costumes. Each set of clothes has a strong sense of design, the clothing with retro flavour make Marianne become more beautiful and charming.

Train to Busan

Train to Busan is a harrowing zombie horror-thriller that follows a group of terrified passengers fighting their way through a countrywide viral outbreak while trapped on a suspicion-filled, blood-drenched bullet train ride to Busan, a southern resort city that has managed to hold off the zombie hordes… or so everyone hopes.Without a rich plot structure, subject matter of the old corpse speed train even made a great success, is all due to the distinctive role of personality showing the reality of "human nature" in the film.

The story is about an unknown virus leak, causing the whole of Korea shrouded in the zombies of terror, before the state is uncertain, the government did not report the truth, saying that is just a series of violence on the street in different places. But the survivors have reject their efforts and lock down the door, not letting these three to stay with them in the only and last carriage on the train without zombie virus, as they think they might have the chance of infection of the zombie virus.

In my view point, in morality, we will ask everyone to help others, but will not ask him to self-sacrifice or dump all their ways to help others. In other words, the general moral has a basic normative requirement for us, but once this basic requirement is exceeded, the individual may set a higher moral standard than the general moral requirement, choose to engage in a more noble altruistic behavior than the general morality and do not want to pay extra sacrifice, and will not be ethically blamed.Although they fear and shrink back and they show the evil side of human nature,they are not wrong.

Hey there good people! I’m feeling a little evil today. “Muahahaha!” That was my failed attempt at making you guys believe I’m evil. Today's movie will be based on my mood. Anyways, aren’t you guys always tired of speaking about the good, the good and the good? I mean come on bad matters to the world too, doesn’t it? The good and bad both make the world how it is and make the people who they are. Let’s face it, there’s no good without evil and there’s no fun in life without the “bad stuff”. *Wink*. To be a little more philosophical here, I think well the bad helps us in ways we can’t even imagine. Well that was tonnes of good and bad, now let’s get on track – yes, I’ll be reviewing a movie and it’s an animated movie, it is- Megamind! We’ve had heaps of good superheroes saving the day, well now it’s time for the evil super-villain to save the day! As terrifying as it sounds, trust me it happens…just trust me.

I’m so glad that Dreamworks produced such a different kind of a movie, with such a different idea. Basically, Dreamworks presented this Superman Vs Brainiac fight which would probably never have been brought on television. This American computer-animated superhero comedy film was directed by Tom Mcgrath and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Moving on to the real deal now, ‘Megamind’ is a story of a villain named, well, Megamind. Suppose it’s “The Incredibles” but for villains. I like The Incredibles and I like villains. It’s like a match made in ~~heaven~~ Dreamworks studios. The film shows the story of a super-smart super-villain, Megamind, who after a long and enduring battle one-day finally defeats his arch-nemesis, the much loved superhero Metro Man. Having Metro city to himself, Megamind discovers that his evil scheming has no purpose. So, he creates another superhero to fill-in as his enemy. However, his plan fails and backfires and he ends up creating a new super-villain. Then the movie takes a turn, which I think is interesting because it’s those grass is always greener on the other side kind of situation. With Metro city going wild, Megamind determines to set things right and finally finds his newfound purpose- as a superhero.

Since it’s an animated movie, one of the most important features, the voice-overs, are done perfectly. The actors who play each character have done their jobs to-a-T. Will Ferrell is Megamind, Tina Fey is Roxanne Ritchie (Who according to me is Lois Lane’s non-copyrighted counterpart), Brad Pitt is Metro man (Who has a total superhero voice vibe going on), David Cross is Minion (who is Megamind’s well…minion) and Jonah Hill is Hal Stewart (the new superhero that becomes super villain, I mean we could always count on Jonah Hill to mess things up). Even though it is a villain based film it also has a romance story, which was good, because you wouldn’t expect a romance story with a villain. The movie made you really feel for Megamind. I haven’t felt that much for a villain since The Joker did his magic trick.

The cinematography was pretty great and the action scenes were better than other movies around that time. The story was very different which is why I really liked it. All in all, the movie was pretty well done. Now go and stop judging all evil people, because they can sometimes be good, even better than the ones who claim to be good.

Ladies and Gentleman of the movie-blog-reading world:

Following on from my review of the 'Dark Knight' last week, I'll be continuing my theme of absolute classics this week with a film that will have you both on the edge of your seat in suspense in some parts and rolling around on the floor dying of laughter in others. Stephen Soderbergh's star-studded 2001 remake of the 1960 heist film 'Oceans Eleven', which originally stared Frank Sinatra, is a film that will both have you begging to visit Vegas and perhaps more worryingly, thinking of ways of stealing 160 million dollars worth of goods from Casinos like the Bellagio, The Mirage and The MGM Grand in Sin City (I do not endorse this! ;)).

Starring the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Andy Garcia, this movie was bound to receive plenty of critical attention from the get-go and let me tell you, it delivers!

The films protagonist is Daniel Ocean, played by George Clooney, who is fresh out of prison and looking for a new job along the lines of his former "unconventional" industry, stealing. He has a very cool and smooth demeanor but seems to use his skills for illicit purposes where, according to his parole board, he has been figured in over a dozen investigations where he was never officially charged. When he gets out of prison, he goes looking for his old buddy Rusty Ryan, played by Brad Pitt, and propositions him to join in on an opportunity to steal millions from 3 Las Vegas casinos. The cool thing about this movie is that those 3 casinos are actually real and can be visited today in Vegas! (Don't ask me why they actually let people make a movie about them being robbed!)

When Rusty's scoping the job he surprisingly sees the owner of the Casino Tony Bennedict, played by Andy Garcia, with Danny's ex-wife Tess Ocean, played brilliantly by Julia Roberts. This shocks him and forces Rusty to confront his old friend and demand an answer to whether the heist is "about her". Danny replies "not entirely", and basically explains how he would like the ultimate outcome to be both financially rewarding to the crew of bandits and personally rewarding to his aspiration to win back Tess. They put together a team of 11 expert thieves who all specialise in various fields like Basher (Don Cheadle) who is an expert and explosives and breaking into vaults, pick-pocket Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon) and electronics and computer expert Livingston Dell, played by Eddie Jemison.

The film keeps the audience engaged for the entire two hours and has the classic heist film feel to it with moments of suspense, laughter and emotion. While the plot may not be the most original in the history of cinema, it still does a great job of keeping you guessing throughout the film and does a great job of keeping you entertained despite the relatively long duration. There are also some great moments of hilarity which helps keep the film lighthearted. There were plenty of times where I was laughing hysterically at great jokes incorporated seamlessly into the script. The star studded cast also seems to be a demonstration of how well respected Stephen Soderbergh is that he was able to get so many A-listers to accept pay cuts and actually make the film happen!

The directors terrific choice of camera angles and cinematography as well as the terrific soundtrack by David Holmes which will have your head bopping along on throughout the movie, also add to this great film.

All-in-all Ocean's Eleven is a great classic that I remember watching many moons ago in my early teens and I would recommend watching to all demographics over the age of 15! (Don't be naughty kids ;)). It is definitely more satisfying, hilarious, exciting and glamorous than the original and should not be missed! I give it a 9/10.

To celebrate the release of the Kingsman 2 trailer, I’ll be reviewing the original. We’ve known for a while that the spy genre is as stale as mouldy bread. Collectively 007, Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer have drained any life there was left in the category. Kingsman remarkably breathes new life into this genre by being a smarter spoof than that of Austin Powers, yet lacking the over seriousness traditional to spy fiction.

The movie is directed by Matthew Vaughn of comic book movie lore and like all his previous films Kingsman is balls to wall fun. The premise is the Kingsman, an independent, secret intelligence service of overly formal gentlemen run by Arthur (Michael Caine). When one of their agents dies in battle, new recruits are gathered then put through a literal elimination process. Top agent Galahad (Colin Firth) sponsors a troubled youth Eggsy (Taron Eggerton) out of guilt and as a favour to Eggsy’s father who died 17 years ago saving Galahad’s life during a mission.

Behind the scenes an evil genius is working on his villainous master plan. Said genius is played by Samuel L. Jackson, a mega rich tech entrepreneur rocking a lisp and a comical aversion to blood and gore. He is accompanied with his henchwoman Gazelle (Sofia Boutella), a double amputee who’s a murderous take on a blade-runner. Both are interesting spin on the classic bond villain trope.

As per usual, Vaughn instils gratuitous violent mayhem into this film. Despite the somewhat predictable plot, one scene alone makes the film gold. This where a Westboro-esque fundamentalist church explodes into a stunningly choreographed free-for-all, set to the guitar solo from the song “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

All things considered, this is a definite must watch movie. If not for a new take to the spy genre, then the mindless visceral action. I’ll giving this movie a ISYS rating of 8/10.

THE JURASSIC PARK (1993)

I'll be reviewing a classic movie, perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made. Jurassic Park, yes, the classic one that was released over two decades ago. As I sit to write this I am sitting in my all black attire today. All black you ask? Well I'm wearing all black because Dr. Ian Malcolm does. (Pfft...it's totally not weird because everyone lives by that rule… I think)

Moving on to the movie, Jurassic Park is an American sci-fi adventure film directed by the great Steven Spielberg. The film is based on the book with the same name by Michael Crichton. Although it does not accurately follow the book and is not an exact adaptation of the book, it still captures the essence of it. So, if you're looking for a movie that represents the book exactly then it's not the most accurate representation but it's still one of the GREATEST movies ever made (especially considering the time and age it was made in).

Enough of the boring talk, now moving on to the fun part. JP (Jurassic Park) was released around 23 years ago and at that time it smacked everyone with fantasy, imagination, amazement and all the other reasons why movies are made in the first place.

In the story of the JP this really rich dude A.k.a. a billionaire philanthropist cloned dinosaurs in his Island for the sake of 'oohs’, 'ahhs', 'woahs’ and a pleasant wildlife park. But the other reason he did it is because he could, I mean come to think of it if I could do it I totally would have done it! I know that Ian Malcolm would totally hit me in the face but I would still do it… Who doesn't want to know how to clone dinosaurs??? Then he brings a palaeontologist, a palaeobotanist, a chaotician and a lawyer (to get eaten off a toilet, which is the best use of lawyer in the history of mankind). And of course, things get crazy when the dinosaurs escape from their pens and that's when we have a thriller movie. But calling JP just a thriller would be an understatement. JP, when I saw, was the most astonishing experience ever because CGI (Computer generated imagery) wasn't really used up to this extent in movies back then. It was crazy to see the CGI used to make full-fledged animals being the star of your movie, I mean Spielberg changed the entire game of film-making forever by making CGI dinosaurs that are still holding 20 years from now. When you see it even now you can say I have seen shittier CGI made in 2013. For me, if it doesn't live up to JP, it doesn't live up to the standard. JP set the bar high in a lot of areas and that bar is still there today.

Funny thing is I didn't notice this when I was a kid but when I watched it recently I noticed that the dinosaurs don't break out of their pens and the things don't get crazy till like halfway through the movie, maybe like two thirds of the way through the movie. However, the movie does such an incredible job at captivating you into this world that you don't care! You like the character interaction, the dialogue, you LOVE the fact that you're on this island in which dinosaurs exist now. When they get to the island there’s this intro where everyone is just awestruck seeing the Brachiosaurus just stomp around and the music kickin' on and you're like 'Welcome to Jurassic Park'. And YOU were there, this movie engrossed you into the world of JP more than any movie will suck you into its world. Ever. JP nails it. This movie made Velociraptors the dinosaurs to be feared. Before that everyone just knew the T-rex as the biggest, the baddest. But JP was like no, Velociraptors, they're smaller, the quicker, wayy more vicious and intelligent! So, you can say in a way that this movie educated us in palaeontology as well.

This movie has something for everyone. You want a cool supporting character? You have it. Impressive CGI? You have it. Awe/ wonder/ danger? You have it. Thriller? It's a thriller. Do you want to feel like a kid again with dinosaurs? You have that too. Even the soundtrack is uhh-mazingg! If you haven't watched The Jurassic Park then what are you even doing with your life? Taste in movies are subjective but when it comes to this there is no equivalent. Jurassic Park changed entertainment at an unfathomable level. Basically, it's AWESOME!

The Dark Knight

With over $1 billion in revenue, 2 Academy Award wins, Golden Globes and countless other accolades Christopher Nolan's epic never-to-be-forgotten 'The Dark Knight' (not to be confused with the 2001 flop 'Black Knight' starring Martin Lawrence) is a film that can not be missed!

Following on from 'Batman Begin's' in Nolan's trilogy chronicling The Caped Crusader, this movie shines with stellar performances by Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and of course the brilliant and masterful late Heath Ledger who shone in his role as the menacing villain, The Joker.

The movie takes us on a roller-coaster journey revolving around the Joker’s quest to expose what he see's as the hypocritical nature of humanity and those who claim to be "good" and ultimately find out what The Batman’s real identity is. Gordon and Dent (played by Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart, respectively) are included on his hit list, and of courseeee there is a love triangle (like we see so often) between Dent, Wayne and Assistant District Attorney Rachel Dawes, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which The Joker manipulatively takes advantage of to attempt to destroy the 2 heroes of Gotham.

Ledger's epic performance is complimented by a good amount of dialogue in the movie, and it's very different to many previous depictions of The Joker in the sense that he doesn't just ramble psychotically, instead he's much more complex. He even somewhat coherently explains the reasons behind his maniacal acts of madness, leaving the audience in a position to almost empathise and understand him in some parts of the movie, despite he's sadistic acts of destruction. Christopher Nolan and his brother Johnathan created a screenplay with a lotttt more depth and poetry than any Batman movie before it.

Acting legends Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine also make fantastic and effortless appearances as scientific genius Lucius Fox and Wayne's butler Alfred respectively, adding even more depth and penetrating insight in a brilliant movie that you HAVE TO SEE if you have not yet had this blessing!

This movie is not to be forgotten and will forever remain one of my all-time favourites! I give it a 9.5/10 mostly thanks to Ledger's phenomenal performance as The Joker, which you will leave you speechless.

Star Wars Showdown: Rogue one vs The Force Awakens

Star Wars is one of the greatest movie franchise of all time, it spans 40 years, beginning with the classic “A New Hope”, which was first released in theatres in 1977. In 2012 Disney coming of the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, acquired Lucas film and all the intellectual property associated with the franchise for 4.05 billion dollars. Following this, Disney kicked started the process to create a series of films called the sequel-trilogy along with a set of anthology films, as of April 2017 we have both opening entries, with the sequel trilogy being Episode VII: The Force Awakens and the first of the anthology films Rogue One: A Star Wars story. Yet there has been a “great disturbance in the force”, fans have been arguing back and forth, which is the better movie? So, let’s solve this most necessary of issues and decide which is the best new Star Wars Movie? (Spoilers are ahead if have not seen the movie)

Episode VII is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi (Episode VI, the last film of the original trilogy). The evil galactic empire has fallen, however all is not well with the galaxy. A group of remaining imperial soldiers and officers have formed a new faction called the First-order, which casts a dark shadow over the galaxy. The First-order is led by the mysterious supreme-leader Snoke along with the red cross guard lightsabre wielding Kylo Ren. The Jedi are all but a myth, their role as keepers of the peace have all but been forgotten. The protagonist, Rey (Daisy Ridley) is an abandoned orphan living on a desert planet, yet much of the story centres around Finn (John Boyega), a turn coat storm trooper. Additionally, the cast of the original trilogy plays a central role in this film, this is one of many through backs to the original Star Wars saga.

Rogue One on the other hand plays to a different beat. It is set just before the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, it can be thought of as Star Wars Episode 3.9. Rogue one loosely follows the story of Jyn Erso(Felicity Jones) daughter of the Death Star designer Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) and how she and the rebel alliance stole death star plans from the empire. The ensemble cast of captain Andor(Diego Luna), the droid K2SO(Alan Tuydk), the imperial pilot boohdi(Riz Ahmed) and the monks Chirrut(Donnie Yen) and Baze(Jiang Wen) play memorable roles despite the lack of screen time and development. The entire plot of the movie can be easily summarised by the now iconic title crawl of Episode IV. Ironically, this is something rogue one does not have. Similar to TFA there are plenty of throwbacks to the original trilogy, though there are bit more subtle and harder to notice when compared with Episode VII.

With Episode VII, J.J Abrahams tries to create a film which would attract a younger audience to the franchise whilst at the same time invoke nostalgia such that older fans are able to connect with the film. From the box office earnings to the sales of the merchandise Episode VII was immensely successful. But a lingering thought remains, was it a good movie? Upon re-watching the film the answer is “meh”, while it’s not a bad movie per say, it’s not worthy of the overwhelming positive response that it received, it is at best a mediocre film. While it captures the style of the original trilogy, which is something that the prequels never did, TFA has no soul of its own. It copies far too much from episode IV in terms of broad plot points. Both movies have

This is where Rogue One surprisingly shines, the original trilogy is 4 decades old at this point, but Gareth Edwards has crafted a movie which works so well that once I finished watching rogue one in theatres last year, I went home and put my copy of episode IV in the Blu-ray player and started watching. Episode VII borrows from the original trilogy, rogue one enhances it. Despite the fact we pretty much know the broad plot points of rogue one, it’s visualises brand new concepts into the star wars universe. We get a background into the construction of the death star and the famous exhaust port. We see a much more splintered rebel alliance pitted against a truly gargantuan empire. For the first time we see why Darth Vader is so feared and for the first time we see the self-sacrifice and plight of the rebellion.

Since this movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue one has a slow burn. For many they will consider the first half slow, yet I saw it as building up to a spectacular second half.

I must admit that the first 30 minutes of TFA is excellent. Episode VII sets up the characters and their motivations perfectly. However, the film quickly squanders much these opportunities. The plot of a film can be thought of as a series of elements which once set up partakes in a certain payoff being the conclusion/revelation. One of the largest flaws in Episode VII is story elements are set up perfectly yet the payoff is disjointed, the best example of this is the reveal that Kylo Ren is Ben Solo. Instead of utilising the scene when Han confronts Ben at Starkiller Base, it is revealed by Supreme-leader Snoke earlier in a scene with General Hux and Kylo Ren. This diminishes the value of the reveal and the words

“I want to see the face of my son”.

Characters too, are underutilised, Captain Phasma only has approximately 3 minute of screen time yet being built up as an important character. Finns crisis of conscience is all but glossed over by the end of the film.

Use the force

The Story and pacing also feels jumbled, with Episode IV, the death star was a central theme, the plans stored on R2D2 related to it, it destroyed Alderaan and it was blown up by firing a proton torpedo into an exhaust port. Though with Episode VII, Starkiller base was not the central theme, it was shoehorned in the second half of the movie.

Rogue one on the other hand follows a more linear story structure, the central theme of the movies is the then secret mega weapon constructed by the empire. While it is a simple story, it is told well. While the characters of rogue one have nowhere near the character development of TFA, though it is sufficient. Plus, each character oozes with personality which more than makes up for the lack of development. My favourite character within Rogue one is the droid K2SO, he is in my mind the best robot within Star Wars. He is like a snarky C3PO, who is actually useful in a fight.

BB8 eat your heart out

My second favourite would be chirrut, he plays the trope of the blind warrior. Chirrut embodies the mysticism of the force, while not being a Jedi, there are hints that he uses it, this in my opinion is the best way to demonstrate the force.

Bad-ass

Rogue one plays like a war film, once the battle gets started, there’s a lot of action, a lot of death and plenty of sacrifices. This is the first film since Empire strikes back that we actually see war, but in rogue one the fight choreography is turned up to eleven in both the space battles and the ground war.

While Episode VII has many dull spots, it has just as many bright spots. The film is beautifully shot, for the first time in a Star Wars film we see the grand scale of the star destroyers.

My ship has a cross guard as well

One of my favourite scenes is on Starkiller Base when Han confronts Ben, half of Bens face is illuminated by red light and half by white. This perfectly illustrates the inner conflict within Ben/Kylo Ren.

I'm a two face

The musical score is good, while it is not as epic as the prequels nor is it iconic as the original trilogy, it is composed by John Williams. Since the London symphony orchestra was not available for TFA thus music feels a bit flat. Rogue Ones score is composed by Michael Giacchino. While nowhere near as iconic like the originals, it does mesh well with the movie. It’s been reported that Giacchino composed the score for the film in 4 weeks. For that amount of time he has done a pretty good job.

Both these movies serve different purposes, Episode VII is about brand renewal whereas Rogue one is about Brand loyalty. Episode VII has been made for a younger demographic thus it tries to hold your hand and spell out plot points where ever possible. Rogue one feels more like a celebration of Star Wars up to this point, it acknowledges the prequels as much as the original trilogy. It acts as a bridge between the two, as such has been made for a more mature audience. I think Rogue one is a better film, to me as a Star Wars fan it’s the distillation of all that is awesome with franchise and it can stand on its own. It does not rehash what been done before, it takes chances and a different approach which ultimately payoff. Do you think I’m correct or am I dead wrong? comment below

Welcome to the movie of the year that will mess with your mind.

Have you ever heard someone say that they find movies wayyyyyy too simple and easy to understand?. Well, look no further as you prepare to get mindf*cked by this movie that is 7 times more difficult to understand than anything you've ever watched before.

Inception. How do I begin to explain it?. Essentially, Nick Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio - yeah that guy from Titanic) is a dream thief who steals ideas from people and then sells them to the highest bidder. He does this by invading the "dream land" of the mark while they sleep and then steals the idea from them. However, as life tends to give us lemons when we are least prepared to deal with them, everything goes t*ts up during one heist and Cobb ends up on the run. Funnily enough, the previous mark had actually allowed Cobb into his mind. Now, why the f*ck would anyone ever allow anyone into their mind?. Personally, I'd never do that unless i was under the influence of 3 or more tabs of acid. Turns out though, the mark had allowed Cobb into his subconscious to consciously test's Cobb conscious skills in the unconscious realm while they both lay unconscious, yet only the mark was conscious of the fact he knew that he was in the unconscious (I know right? what the hell did Cristopher Nolan take before he directed this movie. I reckon it was probably a mix of high quality cocaine and cheap bath salts. Stay in school kids, don't do drugs otherwise you'll end up directing a high quality film that will transcend time and become a classic). Any way, to wrap up a long winded story, the mark hires Cobb to implant an idea in a rivals mind (clever huh? that's why the movie is called inception), time slows down like breaking your mums favorite vase, Cobb has a sharp discussion with his wife (she stab's him with a knife, aren't my puns brilliant?)

As it goes, the movie was incredible. The pure genius of the actors makes you feel like you're one with the team. As far as I'm concerned, this movie deserves a good old ISIS rating of 10/10. Wait I meant an ISYS rating of 10/10.

We are a group of students at Macquarie University studying ISYS 100. Just to clarify, we do not sponsor the millitant group known as ISIS, and if you clicked on our Blog to see some of their interesting video where they study in detail the human anatomy, you'll be sadly disappointed.
