It has finally arrived...

assalamua'alaikum and hi to all,

i have been a while since i write anything here. i am so caught up with my studies and this blog seems becoming important to update lately.

but the latest introduction by Canon of the all-new Canon EOS 7D Mark II really sparks my interest. i am not to bore you with the long-winded specification of the DSLR camera but what got me excited are the presence of the dual-pixel AF design, the 65 all-cross-type auto focus points and the dual Digic 6 processors on-board to help speed up image processing and more. these specification are enough to get me much excited and got me to think whether i should or should not wait for the rumored introduction of the new EOS 5D Mark 4 sometime in the earlier part of 2015.

the dual-pixel AF design is said to help focus on moving objects and this feature alone is enough to make some of us (specifically those inclined to wildlife photography) want to fork out our money in the bank to purchase this DSLR camera right away. The introduction of the new 65 all cross-type auto focus is yet another reason enthusiasts of DSLR photography want to get excited about. the new auto focus is just awesome and enable us to focus and get clear shot right away. finally the dual digic 6 processors really make short work of large-sized raw image processing and more.

this camera is the new king of Canon APS-C DSLR camera. now, should i wait or should i not. hmm...

till next time, my choice is still unknown and my heart has not set on anything as yet. thanks for reading this article and i hope to see you all soon. take care and may ALLAH and teaching of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) bless you always.

wassalam.
A Canon EOS 5D Mark III...

Assalamu'alaikum and hi to all,

It has been quite some time that I have been wishing for a full-frame DSLR camera of my own. And my favourite of all full-frame at this publication time is the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. A camera that is being used by so many photographers especially those who are to shoot wildlife and fast-paced sport activities.

The current (2014) specification as well as in-depth review of the camera can be found at the link below:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii/

and here is a photo of the camera.

It is a dreamy camera. As I am now using a Canon EOS 60D, the EOS 5D Mark III would be an excellent upgrade for me.

It is hoped that I can acquire one and use it as my daily driver.

Till next time, take care and be good to those near to you. Take care and wassalam.

An multi-purpose lens for the APS-C...

Assalamu'alaikum and hi to all,

Tamron has done it again with it latest incarnation of multi-purpose lens specifically built for APS-C cameras. The new Tamron 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro promises a taste of the wide-angle photo-shoot at 16mm while enabling photographers with long-shot photography with its 300mm long range zoom capability all in one neat package. The lens, as other Tamron's of similar nature, weigh less than lens made by its rivals mainly Canon, Nikon and Sigma.

This lens packs (again) 16-300mm focal range with stabilizers built in name VC (or Vibration Compensation mechanism). The highly acclaimed Piezo Drive motor ensure fast and quieter zoom-and-capture capability. As far as I am concern, this lens is very attractive for my personal use as I will no longer have the need to change my lens to accommodate the different photo shooting styles (close wide angle up to long range telephoto shoots).

I will be sure to look for it and perhaps, if I have the cash to spare, purchase this lens and use it as my main lens (and perhaps the only one that I would need).

Until next time, take care and have a nice day.
i just got back from sungai congkak, hulu langat, selangor. we joined an activity set up my wife's colleagues for their students. the events were lively and i had captured almost all of them through my trusted canon eos 60d.

i had planned for this capture before we even reached sungai congkak. i knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.

the water was cool and refreshing. using my tripod, i set up my gear near one of the streams. the camera settings are watermarked on the photos for you to see.
the first photo was the original scene while the second one was the same scene with slow-shutter technique being applied (and zoomed a bit too). the third and final photo was taken a different stream.
on my way back from hatyai, thailand, we stopped by a petrol station for an asar prayer. it was already a bit late for us to perform the prayer but the responsibility needed to be carried out.

while waiting for the rest of us praying, i noticed the sun was setting and colours were remarkably yellow and orange. without haste, i took out my trusted camera and set it up on the tripod. I managed to capture these photos as the sun was setting down the horizon. the sun's rays can be clearly seen in the photos.

God creates, we appreciates. Below are the photos captured on that beautiful early evening.

this is yet another example of trails of lights are captured using the slow-shutter technique. slowing down the shutter close can create excellent effects especially during the nights where lights are amplified and captured with all its glory.

this time the subject was the streets of hatyai city in thailand. a family excursion and the scene was right in front of me. well, not in front actually but more of below me as i was at level 4 of the hotel.

using my tripod, i managed a stabilized capture of the streets below.

the kellie's castle is one of the famous tourist attractions in perak. it is situated near batu gajah town and about 26km from ipoh city (capital city of the state of perak).

on my way home to putrajaya, i stopped by there and captured this photo. i used a nd filter for this shot as i needed more practice on how to apply the nd filter better.

unfortunately, the result was not impressive enough. the capture was a bit shaky as the tripod was set-up on soft sand instead on a hard ground (such cemented platform or the tarmac). thus a slight variation of movement (ie from the shutter trying to focus or from me) caused the tripod to slightly shake and pretty much blurred details of the photo being taken.

a lesson is learnt here. below is the photo of kellie's castle in perak :

as promised in one of my recent blog entry, i will post some photo captures of a pool and its surrounding at one of the famous resorts in port dickson, negeri sembilan.

using the slow-shutter technique (and my trusted tripod), i managed to capture these photos. i really the reflections seen on the water and lightings near the pool had helped clarify the details even more. thanks to my wife and son for their understanding as they had waited for me during the whole 30 minutes photography session.

without further ado, here i present to you the photos that i had promised you :

the second photo however, seemed a bit over-exposed. there seemed to be a bit too much white reflected on the water surface. i had applied the same shutter speed for both photos. what i should have done was to shorten the shutter speed a bit to limit little bit of lights coming into the lens.

thank you for reading and viewing my photo blog and maybe leaving some comments at the end of it all. your comments are welcomed and appreciated. until next time, happy capturing great photos and have a pleasant day ahead. wassalam and bye bye.

waves of slow-shutter..

salam and a nice day to all,

when i had the chance to stay in port dickson, negeri sembilan i took the liberty to capture waves along its famous shores.

although i had taken literally almost 30 shots, just one of them is considered (by me, sorry) as worthy to be posted here. this was second (or third, i can't remember. sorry) attempt at using a nd filter to block too much light coming into my lens when i had the shutter slowed down quite long. and the photo was taken during day time thus blocking the light would be more rigorous.

below is the photo mentioned above :

as i had not got the chance to explore the shores more (as much as i would like to), i had to be contented with this shoreline instead. the waves were 'small' and there were no rock formations to show splashes or any other interesting features you would expect from a sea-shore landscape photos.

how is everything been going on with all of you? hope the best things come to you many different directions. and i do hope that the love and passion for photography has not died down or even worst, completely dead on its tracks.

a few weeks ago i had been given the opportunity to stay at one of the best resorts in port dickson, negeri sembilan. the stay was enjoyable and i had fun there. the fun part i meant was the times given to me to play around with my camera yet again.

i took a few shots at some of the flowers decorated around the pool area of the resort. i'll post some shots of the pool side (at night) later to show reflections on water and lights surrounding it.

at this time, i had not had the pleasure of a prime lens to capture photos with commendable bokeh effects yet. i will also post photos captured using 50mm F1.8 prime lens when i have the chance.

thus, with my trusted canon eos 60D and its kit lens 18-135mm IS, i shot the photos below for your viewing eyes. please comment them as i am learning by doing, experiencing the rights and wrongs of photography every time i have the chance.

happy capturing great photos people, till next time, have a pleasant day ahead. wassalam and bye bye.

After a few days without shooting any images using my trusted camera, I finally resorted to capture images around my workplace. The buildings may look dull to some but, it is where I work and earn my living. A place of gratitude and love for work and friendships.

Thus some images were captured and edited in Adobe Lightroom to more interest to the colours. Using a HDR preset in Lightroom and after some tweaking of my own, the results are the images below. By increasing some of the prominent colours, hopefully I can push the images a bit closer to beauty and greatness.

by pushing the colours' intensity, I am able to add more details to each images. However, I would like to remind you not to over-do-it as it may backfires and caused the images more harm than good. Having said that, to leverage the need to increase or not to increase the colour intensity will depend on your experience and perhaps opinions of colleagues and friends.

Till next time, have a wonderful times with you beloved camera and continue capturing the world and its splendour.
An opportunity has presented itself. While I was resting at my in-laws house somewhere in Seri Iskandar, Perak I saw a window of opportunity to shoot light trails left by vehicles on the road. The night was quiet and a bit lighted (due to quite a few street lights nearby). Quite a few vehicles passed through the roads in front of the house and this was perfect for this sort of shots.

I set up my tripod and attached my trusted camera to it. A trigger was also connected to the body of the camera to ensure steady and sharper images. The produced images were quite alright after a few tries.

I chose Manual Mode with settings slow shutter speed and ISO remained at 100.

Below are some of the shots taken on that night :

After some times, I have been given the opportunity to go to Johor Bahru, Johor. I have been to Johor Bahru a few times before, however those times were quite long time ago. I was given a ride around the Johor Bahru town by a few colleagues and we had dinner together. Thank you to En. Johari and En. Daing for their hospitality and kindness. Without them, my friend and I would not have gone out and see Johor Bahru and its glory at night. Special thanks to En. Nordin for facilitating us in our work. Essentially, without him, the work would have been harder to complete.

We stopped by the famous Danga Bay, one of the famous attractions in Johor Bahru. Danga Bay, during its infancy, was quite mundane and less attractive. There were a few rides for the children and a paid ferry service was available as visitors and their families. Stalls with some delicacies were there for tourist and locals to enjoy and some of dishes were quite tasty.

Now Danga Bay is livelier with more permanent restaurants, fun-fares and rides for children and adults alike and a pier for boats and yachts. However, I missed the stalls and the laid-back coziness they bring with them. The food-stalls were replaced with a hall designated for in-door functions. I guess prosperity is given heavier weightage on the place than the cozy and relaxing environment which I had the pleasure of experiencing quite a few years ago. How time has change. I sure hope the hawkers find better and more profitable places to continue their food-stall business.

Below are some of the photos that I managed to capture on the night. I forgot to bring my trusted tripod thus some of the captures were a bit shaky and less focused. I am sorry. I will try to do better next time.

My personal times for photography kind of slows down a little bit nowadays. I have other priorities to take care off. Every now and then, I saw some great opportunities to capture good scenes along the ways to my home from work. The three towers in Putrajaya are beckoning me, almost inviting me to stop and compose my shots. But I know, once I am in the 'zone', it is quite hard for me to let go.

Thus, finding the right times is first hurdle I have to jump over. Will keep on looking...

Tonight my family went to Alamanda, Putrajaya to buy groceries. Along the way to the Carrefour Alamanda, we stopped by RASA Food Court and had dinner together.

While we were walking towards RASA, I saw two girls scrutinizing photo shots through the DSLRs' LCD panel. The way they looked at those photos told me that not all their shots were 'good'. But this also told me that they will continue to capture more photos, honing their skill and multiplying their experiences in their photo taking techniques.

A few days ago, during one fine morning on the way to work, I found this nice spot to capture sunrise scene. Thus, this morning I woke up and left the house a bit early than usual (I would go out to office a bit later since it was not that far away from my house).

I packed my gears (the camera, etc) together with my trusty tripod. I set out to the place with an anticipation of a good capture. Unfortunately, there was less cloud to begin with. The sky was a bit to bland in light-ish blue colour thus the whole scene was a bit 'dull' and had less details to capture.

I had checked on the internet on the how-to of capturing a sunrise. However, if I had captured a good image of sunrise myself on then I can confirm on the camera settings to be used.

This was not a completed mission. The search will continue...

Till next time, wassalam and good bye.

To catch the moon 2...

I have given it a go for the second time. On a small and controllable scale...

Salam and hi to all,

For my next small photo shoot project, I have chosen to capture water and its effects in a control situation (ie. in the kitchen sink. :-) ) A setup that I think is manageable to all of you (like me, budding photographer with rushing adrenaline to find and capture beautiful images). The items needed for this project to work are those that you can find in a kitchen. We would need a glass (a bit tall ones to ensure more freedom to compose an image vertically), a mug lid (like those used by the Chinese/Japanese in the movies when they drink their tea), black cloth or maybe non-reflective cardboard for adark background and of course, an unlimited supply of controlled running water (water tap in the kitchen) as our main subjects.

Next we would need out trusted tripod and a flashgun. A wired shutter trigger can also help us take the shots comfortably while improving brightness with a diffuser which in turns may produce sharper images. You may want to lower one of the tripod's stand/leg to balance the weight of your camera plus a flashgun. The photos below shows how my gears are set up: (please do not mind the kitchen. It is a bit messy at the time. Sorry).

Then, we would need to configure our camera. For this project, I have chosen the 'Manual' or 'M' mode. In this mode, I can control shutter speed, aperture value as well the ISO speed. These are the basic settings that I have used:

Shutter speed : the highest (1/250)

Aperture value: f5.6 ~ f6.0

ISO speed: ~ ISO1000

The first photo below is one of the early batch of shots.

The next few photos are taken after I have added a darker background in order to have clearer and more detail image compositions. (Thanks to my wife for helping me out. I love you, darling)

Well, tonight's project would be about the moon. How to capture the moon? Through trial-and-error, I have managed to 'catch' the moon. The moon is at its 3/4 size tonight. Using my trusted kit-lens EF-S 18-135mm IS, I have spent about 1 hour 30 minutes focusing on the moon and trying to 'capture' it.

The result is not that great. Below is my best take out of a batch of photo I have taken tonight. The photo has been cropped from its original size (18 mega-pixel resolution)

Even after it is cropped, the moon looked too small and lacked detail. After doing some reading from the links below :

http://www.digital-photography-school.com/moon-photography-made-simple

http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/other-digital-photography-technique-discussion/94836-how-capture-moon.html

I have realized that I would need a much longer focal length lens (as mentioned in one of the article - minimum focal length is 200mm) thus my kit-lens does not qualify. Below is an example of photo taken by a photographer in the article mentioned above using a prime lens of 400mm focal length.

(The photo serves as an example only. It's credits and copyrights are wholly owned by inkista)

Well, at least I have tried. Maybe I would repeat this little project some time in the future when I have the appropriate telephoto or super telephoto lens needed to 'capture the moon'.

Until next time, wassalam and good bye.

Slow shutter and its effect...

Salam and hi to all,

I went to an photo session outing together with my wife and son. The place of choice was Putrajaya, central administrative hub for Malaysia.

It has some of the most unique buildings in the country with architectural theme ranging from the intricate beauty of Islamic arts and culture, administrative-look and design of the western world to creative and contemporary design that many have to love and appreciate.

All the photos placed below are my first attempt on using the slow shutter under the manual mode of my Canon EOS 60D. I understand that I need many more attempts and learn more about the effects that I should be able to produce and the mistakes that I should not repeat in the future.

However, your honest comments/or appraisals are very much appreciated.

Till next time, wassalam and bye.

After using my first DSLR camera (Canon EOS 500D) for awhile, I realized that I needed more. Thankfully enough, at that time, I had enough money stashed away for an upgrade project. The game was set. The research was given a 'go'.

Countless hours and 'almost' sleepless nights had gone through searching and reading from reviews and forums for the right DSLR camera replacing my not-that-old-yet-trusted Canon EOS 500D. The old camera had opened my eyes to the expanding and evolving world of digital creative photography. Adding a new one, would only hoped to further this still-freshly-found motivation and interest.

Coming from 3 digit Canon EOS (ie the '500' in EOS 500D), many had said that it was a logical step to get better hardware among the 2 and 1 digit Canon EOS cameras. The specifications and prices of said cameras would then be the deciding factors. The one digit Canon EOS camera can set me back around RM5500 and more (body only) plus a few more thousands for the lens. The one camera I started to have great interest in was Canon EOS 7D.

In-depth review of Canon EOS 7D can be found here.

It was introduced a few years back in late 2009. The hardware specifications are fantastic with 2 integrated DIGIC 4 image processor and a full frame coverage photo shots through the viewfinder while the ISO level can reach up to 12800. It is a 18 mega-pixel shooter covered in sturdy magnesium body signifying its status as a semi-professional level among Canon EOS camera line-up.

However it was just too costly to me. I was stricken by it. I knew if I waited a bit more and perhaps save some more money, I could get my hand on one unit of that camera and called it my own. On the other hand, I found that there was another Canon EOS camera revealed fairly recent (late 2010) which has an articulated screen. The camera specification was tuned akin to the Canon EOS 7D. It was a Canon EOS 60D.

In-depth review of this camera can be found here.

After reading more about this fairly new camera, I felt that this was the camera for me. The articulated 3.0 inch screen is invaluable in many photo shoot situation. Many has praised its inclusion with this camera stating extending its value to be a more multi-angle shooter. Although Canon has placed this camera for serious enthusiasts category, it's specifications are slightly in-favour of replacing a quite old semi-pro level Canon EOS camera, which was Canon EOS 50D.

EOS 60D is a 18 mega-pixel shooter with a single DIGIC 4 image processor and able to record 1080p video out-of-the-box. However it is not a full-frame coverage photo shots through the viewfinder. It is cropped at 95% coverage. Meaning, the result photo will be cropped about 5% at all sides from what you see in viewfinder.

Thus, with large sum of money in my hand and a peace of mind (knowing I had made up my mind) I went to Boeing Photo Sdn Bhd (located inside the Mines Shopping Centre in Seri Kembangan) and purchased the camera. I 'almost' jumped with joy knowing that they had the unit I wanted with kit lens 2 (EF-S18-135mm IS). When arrived home, I went into the internet and had the camera registered with Canon Malaysia Online Registration.

My road to further discovery in the world of digital creative photography had just been paved with solid assurance. A few accessories were needed to complete my photo-taking experience. I will write more on this later.

Till next time. Wassalam and good bye.

My First DSLR...

Salam and good day to all,

My first camera DSLR was a Canon EOS 500D with kit lens 1 (EF-S 18-55mm IS). I bought it out of my rising interest on photography and one other personal reason. The camera was a great joy and an excellent introduction to the wide world of creative DSLR photography. The possibilities of taking great photos was then in my hand. However, using compact or point-and-shoot camera can enable one to take great and memorable photos yet it lacks the 'punch' and 'kicks' of going further into the world of creative photo captures and compositions.

Link to in-depth review of this camera can be found at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos500d/

Thus, whenever I had the chance, I would be taking photos and learning how to catch great moments through the viewfinder of the my Canon EOS 500D. Only then I realized there are more to taking photos than just squeezing the shutter release button.

There are things that I have to be aware of, for example ISO meter, aperture value, exposure compensation, shutter speed and more. The more accurate you are at measuring and setting them up, the more accurate the colours and lighting present in the photos. I started to think that photography is not only about the emotions and the precious moments that you see in front of you, but it is also about capturing the right amount of lights and colours to make your compositions/photos meaningful and appreciable.

I think I will be more mature in photography as I experimented more with my camera settings and shots. The more you use it, the better you will become.

That's all for now. Wassalam and good bye.

Bought a new tripod...

After much debated mishaps on my part, the old tripod which I bought a year or two ago was broken. Sad but true, the tripod was broken and in need of replacement. Taking photo without a tripod when it is needed is not an enjoyable situation at all. As many photographers (and videographers too) would have said, a tripod greatly helps in keeping the camera (video recorder) still or unshaken. It is also instrumental to capture still photos such portraits, landscape shots such as mountain ranges or even sea shores during sunset/sunrise.

Thus, the search for a new tripod began. After many hours of research (forums and reviews), I finally made my mind on a Velbon VS-443D. A tripod designed to be multi-purposed in its usage. It is useful in normal use portrait and landscape shots as well as allows for capture of images at close range or macro shooting.

Below is a few photos and a youtube video review of the tripod. The review showed how flexible and dynamic the tripod is thus allowing for multitude of ways to capture images and videos.

The pros:

The build quality is excellent. The whole tripod is made of aluminium except for the ball-head which is made of magnesium (which is also very good).

The ball-head can be tilted and locked according to my needs. As a result, the camera can be freely positioned (for example: upside down, at awkward angle etc).

The total height of the tripod (after all 4 leg sections are extended) is good enough for me. I do not have to bend over just to compose my shots through the viewfinder all the time.

Multitude of positions it can accommodate to suit my photo shoot needs.

It is not heavy to carry (about 1.85kg). A bag is provided out-of-the-box for easy carry.

The price is within my budget. :)

The cons:

The ideal weight for this tripod is about 3kg. The maximum load it can support is about 5kg. Well, first of all, this is not a big problem for me as total weight of my camera (camera+semi-telefoto lens+flash) would not exceed 3kg. Thus it is more suited for use with camera (compact or DSLR) and light-weight video recorder.

All-in-all, I think I have made a good decision on purchasing this tripod.

Well, what do you think?
