the island of Santorini is probably the most intriguing island of Greece. Simply its name is more than enough to unfold in mind stunning sunsets and scenery, white, red and black sand beaches, impresive traditional houses, balconies with vew to the Volcano and and lively night life. All the above, allong with the remains of the antiquity and the myth of the Lost Atlantis justify the words which the tourists determine this wonderful island.

The active volcano of Santorini erupted in the 50's and ruined many towns of the island. Santorini is also called Thira and its capital is the town of Fira. It is a very touristy island and therefore rather expensive.

The locals live mainly off agriculture and tourism. The islands largest export product is soil; 2.000.000 tons a year are used all over the world, mainly to make concrete. The Suez channel was built with this concrete for example.

Most holidaymakers stay where the beaches are, Kamari and Perissa, but these places really do not represent the island's amazing distinctiveness.

If you can, you should try to stay in Fira, Imerovigli or Oia, the towns on the cliffs, which are very beautiful and full of little cafes, shops and places of interest. There is a bus that goes to the beaches everyday, and it is much better to be in the towns in the evening and on the beaches during the day. If you stay in Monolithos you will have more peace and quiet.

Approaching the island by boat the immediate impression obtained is this is a Greek island unlike any other. The island of Santorini was formed out of the lava from the volcanic eruption in 1660 BC. The central part of the volcano sank into the sea leading to the emergence of Santorini itself and the tiny neighbouring islands of Thirasia, Palaia and Nea Kameni close by.

Today, Santorini is the only inhabited Caldera (volcano cauldron) in the world. Unlike other islands in Greece, the towns and villages sit densely on top of the massive cliffs of the Caldera and from a distance appear like snow capping the towering mountain tops. The coloured strata of the volcanic rock of these cliffs are spectacular in themselves: chocolate brown, rust red, yellow ochre, white and cream. The geological uniqueness however is not the only thing that makes Santorini a special holiday destination.

Everyone has read about the spectacular sunsets that occur on this island and the sceptic may question whether the setting sun can really appear differently here than from the neighbouring islands of Naxos or Ios. Nevertheless, the sunsets at Santorini, viewed from the Caldera, really are breathtakingly beautiful when seen as a backdrop to the volcano. The colours that streak the sky change from lilac to deep purple, from yellow to orange to red, as the golden sun sinks and becomes blood red reflecting its light on to the sea and the surrounding little islands, an amazing scene for photography. The eastern slopes of the island are green and fertile, even in October. This is due to the copious vineyards that grow so well in the fertile volcanic soil. The terraced slopes of the mountains use every available part of this fertile land. The island suffer from water scarcity, because it has few natural water reserves, but the nature of the dry soil of Santorini produces grapes that make up one of the best wines of Greece. The climate, though damp is healthy and perfect for producing the famous wine (vinsando), fava beans and tomatoes. There are many wineries and a a local factory for canning tomato paste, tomatoes and vegetables. Santorini used to export a lot of pumice that finally stopped due to the destruction the old pumice mines did to the island. The old mines now are used for the burial of waste.

Today the island's economy relies on tourism, where tens of thousands tourists from Greece and around the world visit the island for unforgettable holidays

History Santorini used to be a round island, but during an earthquake and volcano-outbreak in the 15th century BC the middle of the island sunk and gave it the shape it has today. The underwater volcano, which is one of the rare examples of volcanoes in the world created from a circular island that was there before the explosion, a group of islands namely Thera, Thirassia, New and Old Kameni and Aspronisi. This is one of the reasons why many believe Santorini really is where Atlantis once was. The Minoan civilization on theisland was razed after this, but apparently, most people managed to flee.

The island has changed names through history. Originally it was called Stroggyli ("round") since that was the shape of the island. When the Phoenicians came they named it Kallisti ("the very best"), and finally it got the name Thira after its first ruler.

Theras was the son of the Theban hero Autesion who was a descendant of Cadmus. He was the vice king of Sparta and responsible for his twin nephews Procles and Eurysthenes. When they were old enough to rule by themselves, Theras left Sparta with a company of aristocrats and settled on Santorini.

The Romans originally used the island as a place for exiles, but later helped in building up the island. The Christianization of Santorini took place between the 2nd and 5th century. The island was often ravaged and even destroyed by pirates and in 1204 it was conquered by the Venetians. It was about then the island got its current name. The islands patron saint was Agia Irini (St Eirene) and the foreign sailors called her St Irini - thus Santorini.

The island was destroyed by the Venetians in 1354, and once again in 1397, this time by the conquering Turks. In 1821 Santorini joined forces with the Greek revolutionists and the island was subsequently freed from Turkish rule. In 1956 there was a terrible earthquake which caused many buildings to be ruined. The people in Kamari are almost all from a village that was totally destroyed back then.

The island has been reconstructed after the terrible earthquake that destroyed it on 9 July 1956.

Places to see in Satorini : Fira the capital of Santorini is built on the edge of the caldera at the west side of the island, at an altitude of 250 meters and was founded in the late 18th century. It was the time when the inhabitants of the old capital of the island, the castle of Skaros which was just underneath the village of Imerovigli, began to abandon it because it was heavily damaged by the earthquakes. In the early 19th century, Fira became the capital of the island, and had access to the sea through the port of Fira that is used until today mainly for cruise ships. Fira is the seat of both the Orthodox, and the Catholic Diocese of Santorini.

What impresses at first glance in Fira is the typical architecture of the houses and the stunning views. In the town are based the public offices of the island, most of the shops, restaurants and hotels and the town itself is the most populated of the island. In Fira you can visit also the the art exhibition in the famous mansion Gizi . The Archaeological museum and the Prehistoric museum where you can see items from the excavations in Akrotiri, as well as many artefacts and sculpture from the rich historical past of Santorini from the Prehistoric times, the Neolithic and Minoan era, the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.

The main square Theotokopoulou is the centre of the town. There you will find most of the banks, the buses and taxi terminals and many shops.

During the evening all the terraces of the privileged cafes at the edge of the caldera filled with tourists that are coming to enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the deep blue Aegean.

At night the small streets along the east side of the town over the caldera are bursting with crowds of holiday makers that walking up and down the steps and narrow labyrinthine stone streets in a colourful environment among numerous shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. During the summer the city never sleeps, numerous cafes and snack bars are open for the clubbers until the early morning hours. In Fira there is also a folklore museum, a citadel from the Middle Ages, two Cathedrals, a Catholic and an Orthodox. In Fira you can go to the church of Ag Mina, which is the church that most postcards of Santorini portray . If you come to Fira in September, there is a renowned classical music festival every year.

At Oia you you get the best sunsets, and both Oia and Fira are excellent towns for just strolling around and shopping. The main street of Oia bursts of tourists, especially when cruise ships are arrived, strolling around the numerous tourist and souvenir shops. Be sure to find a table at one of the cafes at the edge of the caldera before the sunset. Oia is a surprisingly large town with just one street running along the entire length of the town with two sets of cliff-side stairways descending all the way down to the bays of Ammouda and Armeni as well as a cliff path which runs down to the tiny port of Armenaki. Armeni harbour is smaller and quieter than Ammoudi with one taverna and a small pebbly beach. Similarly, it too, was used for trading wine during the days when Oia was at its maritime peak. It can be reached by walking down the 291 steps from the Skala restaurant close to the main Caldera Square. There are also donkeys or mules to hire to bring you up or down. Alternatively, boats leave from Ammoudi bay to Armeni. The main street of Oia is divided into two parts, one for cars and the second is pedestrian only. Many little lanes and alleys come off of this street. You can experience practically the whole of the village by walking along the pedestrian street, with fantastic views all the way. The magnificent sunsets can be seen from here but the best places to view are from either end of the main street. At the eastern end is the main square with the bus station and the Church of Panagia of Platsani and, at the western end, are the ruins of the Venetian castle, the windmills and the 300 steps leading down to Ammoudi Bay. This latter seems to be the most popular spot for viewing the

sunsets but can get very crowded at sunset. Traditional Cycladic windmills are an integral part of the landscape of Oia. They are scattered across the town, hugging the side of the cliffs like molluscs. Some of them are now used as private homes or are let out as holiday homes, whereas others are incorporated into restaurants or simply cling there with no other purpose than to add to the unique charm of this town. The most charming are those located at the western end of the island, especially when they are bathed in the rays of the setting sun. Oia is one of the most photogenic island villages in Santorini and walking around its winding cobbled streets is an absolute delight. Although in high season it can get very busy, it is still possible to find yourself alone in a secluded little passageway where you can quietly admire the original old mansions, the windmills, the churches and the spectacular views of the volcano, the caldera and the small island of Aspro and out to the larger craggy island of Thirassia. The central square, Nicolaou Nomikou, lies not at the centre of the town but a bit further towards its eastern side. It is a popular place to take photographs as it borders the caldera and has magnificent sea views. One of the most important buildings of the village is located on this square, the large Church of Panagia of Platsani. This beautiful church can be visited in the evenings throughout the summer season. This square also is the site for the occasional concert during the summer months as well as being a place where locals meet and children play. Close to the square there are steps which lead down to Armeni Bay.

Imerovigli It is located about 2 miles north of Fira and south of Oia. The village of Imerovigli is buid on the top of the Caldera at 300 metres over the sea level. It has a few hundred inhabitants and is a national heritage village with many chapels and churches. The most famous landmark of Imerovigli is the castle of Skaros on the top of the rock beneath the village that use to be the capital of the island of Santorini until the 18th century. There are many hotels but more quite as Fira and Oia. You can walk there from Fira going through Firostefani.

Akrotiri is an ancient town that was buried when the volcano erupted 3500 years ago. Archaeologists are still excavating it, but you can walk around in the little street quarters and see the buildings almost like they were back then. You'll be impressed by the modernity: the houses were two or three storey high, and they even had running water. The excavations have also revealed beautiful frescoes, tools and everyday life objects.

In Pyrgos a few kilometres from the capital you can see the medieval fortress Kasteli and admire a 10th century church and a monastery both with beautiful Byzantine icons and relics. The village of Messaria is also located close to Fira (about 3,5 km) and is surrounded by vineyards, you should visit the two small churches that are built in caves. In Megalochori 5 km southeast of Fira interesting is the unique way that this village combines the Cycladic architecture with neoclassical mansions, there are some interesting churches to visit like the church of the Virgin Mary, decorated with Icons from Russia and a totally original calendar with miniature pictures. There are many places to stay, while from here you have the opportunity to reach the southern coasts of the island.

Perissa Located approximately 14km away from Fira town, Perissa is easily reached in around 10-15 minutes by bus or road. Buses leave regularly from Fira market square and stop at pickup points all along the beach road of Perissa. The beach of Perissa is the longest in Santorini: a very impressive length of 7km that stretches to the next beach of Perivolos. In addition to the beautiful black sand beach with all kinds of shops, accommodations and water sports facilities worth visiting is the ancient site with buildings and ruins from different time periods. There is an ancient theatre, the ancient market, the ruins of a temple of Apollo, a shrine of Egyptian deities and many buildings from the Hellenistic period.

Kamari in addition to the well organised beach you can visit a church of the 11th century with significant Byzantine frescos and sculptures from an earlier church. From Kamari, a winding switchback road takes you up to to the ancient settlement of Thira on Mesa Vouno mountain. If you have rented your own motor transport, it is possible to drive up this road until you reach the parking area where you must continue on foot. If you prefer, you can take one of the many coach tours which leave from Kamari to the parking area of Thira. Either way, if you wish to see the ancient archaeological site, it will involve the final stage being completed on foot. The path is uneven and rocky so ensure that you are wearing sensible shoes and, if necessary, have a walking stick to assist you for the final part of your journey. The archaeological site is not fully excavated and, although interesting, it has to be said that the site is more scenic than archaeological. So, if you think you can’t manage the final walk to the top, don’t leave a trip up Mt. Mesa Vouna off your itinerary. The views are absolutely spectacular!

Emporio the traditional old market village of the island located 12 km away from Fira. The village impresses with its unique layout and its very narrow streets.

Here you will see the tower built during the era of Ottoman rule in order to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids, another interesting place to see is the monastery of St. John the Divine.

Don't miss to visit Finikia a small traditional village with beautiful churches in the vicinity of Oia and the beach Baxedes . The villages of Mesochori and Karterados are worth visiting as well as the village of Vourvoulos, which is located in the northeast of the island 2.5 km from Fira.

From the balconies of the houses, visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the island , overlooking the plains and the sea which is 1.2 km away.

Through the tranquil countryside , visitors can enjoy the moon rise at the evening and the wonderful sunrise in the morning. In the village there are taverns and mini markets. Monolithos village situated 9 km from Fira and gather many visitors, thanks to its stunning beach.

It is very nice to go on one of the boat excursions offered. There are sunset trips in the evenings, and daily trips to the volcano and the opposite islands Palia Kammeni, with warm natural wells, and Thirasia, where there is a tiny picturesque village.

Ancient Thira: is situated on top of high cliff just above Kamari, and there is also and old church there from 1100 . This was the Roman head quarters. Right at the top of the southeast peak of the highest mountain of Santorini in Profitis Helias is the ancient settlement of Thira. The winding road that leads to this settlement begins at the south end of Kamari at the foot of the mountain. The physically fit can walk up the winding mountain road. which takes around 45 minutes, but the easiest way is to drive up or take a bus and reserve your energy for the final climb to the settlement itself as this last part is only accessible by foot. The road is carefully constructed from hard stones and ends at the beginning of the archaeological area of ancient Thira. Here you will find a refreshment hut, seating and car parking space. Buses also go to this point. From the top of the Ancient Thira there are breathtaking views over the eastern coast of Santorini, with the coastal villages of Kamari and Perissa as tiny toy towns far below. If you intend to walk or take your car it is advisable to go before 11am, in this way you will avoid trying to negotiate passing oncoming traffic on the narrow mountain road. If you are intending to walk it is recommended to wear suitable footwear because the climb from the car park to the settlement itself is not dangerous or difficult but it does not have a properly constructed road to walk on. The other most historic area of Santorini located in Akrotiri where the excavations brought to the light the remains of the Minoan town.

What to Do In Kamari and Karteradso there are tennis courts. In Perissa there is mini golf, water park, go cart and roller-skating. In Fira and Kamari there are fields for volleyball and basketball. There are also many places to go biking. Many people enjoy the two hour walk from Imerovigli to Fira- it is a very beautiful experience, but make sure you have water with you, though today the two towns with Firostefani in the middle are almost connected up. There are also opportunities to go horse riding. Most of the nightlife is in Kamari, Perissa and Fira. Do not forget the famous wineries of the island where you can visit and taste the local Santorini wine. If you are driving you will spot in many areas signs with the indication "wine roads".

Cruising the Caldera: This is a slightly different but equally enjoyable way to visit the Caldera and enjoy the stunning sunsets of Oia. Many tour operators run these cruises and you will find many being advertised in Fira. The cruises last all day and leave from Fira around mid-morning. Typically, the ship visits Nea Kameni, the active volcano in the centre of the caldera and usually you will be able to stop off here and climb the volcano. The cost of this climb is approximately one euro and don’t forget that you will need to be wearing suitable footwear for this climb. Ships usually spend one hour at Nea Kameni before sailing on to Palia Kameni and its hot springs. After a refreshing dip into the water the ships continue on to Thirassia, or ‘Little Thira’. Here you will stop off for lunch, a swim and perhaps a donkey ride up to the town of Manolas. From Thirassia, the ship continues on to Oia where you can alight to explore the town and watch the sunset before returning to the ship for the cruise back to Fira.

Beaches Being a volcanic island, the beaches are not of the ubiquitous golden sand variety that you can expect to find on many Greek islands. The south-eastern side of the island gives the best

beaches of wide black lava sand. Other beaches around the island consist of black sand strewn with pumice stones and black pebbles. Because the beaches of Santorini consist of black volcanic matter, the heat of the sun is absorbed rather than reflected. Consequently, the sand can get incredibly hot during the day so, to avoid burning the soles of your feet, wearing protective shoes is highly recommended. Kamari and Perissa are popular beaches on this southeast coast both with beautiful mountain surroundings and wide stretches of black sand. Santorini main beaches have water sports. In general, Santorini beaches are wide with mainly black sand. There are also lots of currents and the waves can get very high especially at the north east side of the island. Nightlife Santorini has a varied nightlife, and most bars and discos are in Fira, Kamari and Perissa. Fira is probably the most popular place, and here you shouldn't miss having a drink in one of the little cafes on the steep side. Food and restaurants: You can get almost everything on Santorini - from traditional Greeks food to international gourmet dinners. Try the local wine Visanto and see what you think!!! In Fira on the side of the Caldera there are numerous eateries and grill taverns where you can enjoy all kind of foods from cheap souvlaki, Giros with pita bread and hamburgers to expensive up market restaurants .The same setting of eateries can be found in Oia, Imerovigli and all the other resorts of the island.

Weather The weather in Santorini like in most of the Aegean islands consists of beautiful and dry Summers with temperatures reaching sometimes 35- 37 degrees but the Meletemia (north summer winds) decrease the high summer temperatures. The north east part of the islands is mostly windy while the west part is protected from the winds from the island of Thirasia. Winters can be cold and wet but never reaching bellow zero temperatures.

Shopping Santorini is a bit of a cosmopolitan island, just the number of luxury yachts that stop here is very high for such a small island, so it is quite expensive. Many artists live here, and you can buy a lot of original stuff - hand painted umbrellas, ceramics, jewellery, art etc. You can also get nice icons, but be careful, anything older than 1821 needs a special permit to be exported. There is also local wine worth trying and taking with you, the famous fava beans of Santorini (best in Greece) , local cheeses and caper. Of course if you stay longer in Santorini and would like to have your self catering, there are major international chain supermarkets like Lidle, mini markets, green grosser and all kind of shops you will find in a city.

Although Fira is considered to be the best town for shopping in Santorini, Oia comes a very close second. In fact, for clothing, handicrafts and artwork it definitely surpasses Fira. The narrow cobbled streets are bursting with tiny little shops selling all manner of beautiful fabrics, jewellery, artwork, antiques, Venetian mirrors and souvenirs. The general ambience too is preferable to the busy streets of Fira. In Oia you will find compact, jewel-like shops and art galleries with a much more sophisticated, ethnic quality to them. Furthermore, because of its stunning vantage point, Oia has inspired and attracted many artist. Consequently, it is not surprising that it is considered to be the artistic capital of Santorini and for this reason you will discover many small art galleries, often with work that is more imaginative and original than can be found in Fira.

Getting Around Santorini is quite a small island, and it is easy to get around. There are local buses to take you to most places, but of course you can also rent a car or a bike. There are also taxis on the island.

The harbour of Athinios where the ferryboats stop is connected to Fira and the rest of the island by a well made serpentine road. Driving up or down this road can be quite an experience for anyone afraid of heights. The old port of Fira under the town is used only for passengers from the cruise ships. You can also walk up or down that road (almost 900steps) or take a donkey ride all the way. There is also a cable car taking you straight to Fira. As you arrive at Athinios you can rent a car straight away from the spot. Santorini has a very good road network and a car or a bike will make your stay more convenient.

Getting There Santorini has its own airport for domestic and international flights to Santorni . There are ferries to Santorini from Athens Piraeus 2-3 times a day, from Rafina four times a week, Ios-Naxos-Paros 2-3 times a day, Syros twice a week, Milos twice a week, Sikinos - Folegandros 4 times a week, Mykonos-Delos daily, Rhodes twice a week, Crete daily. The island is also connected by air with Rhodes and Heraclion of Crete during the summer season.

In general, Santorini is a great place to start if you want to go island hopping, since it is connected to most Cycladic islands.

NOT so long ago Mykonos, one of the Aegean’s most popular islands, onto which jumbo cruise ships deposit as many as 15,000 day-trippers a day, was awash in just about everything but glamour. The Greek island was easily dismissed as too crowded, too expensive, too much of a cliché. But over the past few summers, it has bounced back hard as one of Europe’s jet-set playgrounds, rivaling the days when its cachet was almost universally evoked with just two words: Jackie Onassis.

These days, its hoteliers and restaurateurs are creating the magic by mixing a healthy dose of the island’s hedonistic past with a new reality of luxury accommodations, fusion gastronomy and notions of proper service. Mykonos has quickly welcomed a lost generation of globe-trotters, many of whom once scoffed at the idea of joining the mobs massing on its shores.

2) RUSTIC CHIC

Fighting the current trend toward white-on-white minimalism, the family-owned taverna Te Maerio (Kalogera Street, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-28825) serves straightforward fare amid charmingly simple décor. Model ships and braided loaves of bread adorn the walls, and the standout nibbles include crispy zucchini fritters (7 euros), rich tzatziki crunchy with cucumber (4 euros) and the savory keftedes (9.50 euros).

3) TAKE TO THE STREETS

For gay visitors, the scene gets going at Porta (Paraportiani, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-27087), which reaches its peak crowd around 1 a.m., and in the streets around Pierro’s Bar (Matoyanni Street, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-22177; www.pierrosbar.gr) where the proximity of several like-minded establishments creates a nightly Pride party. Steps away you’ll find the International Press News Stand with a huge selection of glossy fashion, travel and gossip magazines for beach reading.

5) BEACH BOUND

Mykonos has enough gorgeous white-sand beaches lapped by crystalline turquoise water to have allowed for a bit of market specialization in terms of atmosphere and amenities. These range from simple family-style tavernas to ultra-chic lounges pumping out dancemusic and potent cocktails at all hours. The latter is the case in many of the coves in the south, where the beach at Elia seems to be eclipsing Super Paradise as the island’s prime gay beach. A more tranquil version of paradise can be found in the north, at Agios Sostis,a semi-remote stretch of sand free of crowds, lounge chairs and disco beats at the mouth of Panormos Bay.

6) FOLLOW YOUR NOSE

Just above Agios Sostis is one of the island’s best-known secrets. A restaurant with no sign, no phone and open only for lunch, Kiki’s is well worth seeking out — just follow the smell of barbecue — and waiting as long as it takes for a seat at what could be one of the world’s most idyllic seaside restaurants. The sweeping sea view is matched by the simple, rustic fare: salads of lentils and artichokes or pasta with tuna and cherry tomatoes (4 euros each), to be followed by grilled octopus or a succulent chicken breast stuffed with feta and sun-dried tomatoes (16 euros).

7) GOLD RUSH

The Greeks have been known for the refinement of their gold jewelry since the days of Alexander the Great, and Mykonos provides a delightful density of boutiques for perusing the exquisite wares. Specializing in fashion jewelry — like chains of loopy 18-karat-gold links or brushed-gold dome rings set with semi-precious stones — Karkalis (Matoyanni 17, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-24022; www.gold.gr) is less about family heirlooms and all about finding something fun to spark your outfit for a few hundred (or thousand) euros. With the exception of the evil-eye charms done up in various sizes in mother-of-pearl, turquoise and onyx (from 320 euros), most pieces are unique creations.

8) ABOVE THE FRAY

Nestled on a hill overlooking Mykonos Town is the Belvedere Hotel (School of Fine Arts District; 30-22890-25122; www.belvederehotel.com), the gold standard of Mykonian chic and now a nexus of international gastronomy. While the sushi is slung at Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurant on one side of the Belvedere’s romantically lantern-lit pool deck, this summer sees the celebrity Greek-Australian chef George Calombaris turning up the heat at the new Club Belvedere. Designed by David Rockwell and Colin Cowie, the breezy white-and-teak dining room spills out of the main building and provides a festive environment for Mr. Calombaris’s updated family-style meals. Sign on for the five-course kerasma menu (80 euros without wine) that starts with a palate-cleansing saganaki martini — a skewer of grilled haloumi cheese atop a gin martini infused with tomato, cucumber and chives. The starters and mains like mussels spanakopita and chicken souvlaki are equally inspired in their tweak on tradition.

9) HIT THE MEAT MARKET

Check the scene at Uno con Carne (Panachra, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-24020), a newly opened Argentine steakhouse set in the spectacular Art Deco space of Mykonos’s former open-air cinema. It has cleverly devoted equal amounts of space to the dining area and the lively lounge, which — unlike many a Mykonian watering hole — has plenty of furniture on which to lounge while savoring a glass of vintage malbec (8 euros).

Don’t worry if you’re already too inebriated to drive out to the clubs or not willing to fight for one of only 31 taxis on the island. Stroll instead to Astra Bar (3 Enoplon Dynameon Street, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-24767; www.astrabar.com), a boîte designed in the late 1980s by the local jeweler Minas, who incorporated a fiber-optic “starlight” ceiling that pulses to the music. Two decades on, this gem has lost none of its luster and still packs in models, magnates, rock stars, Formula One drivers and even a recent Miss Greece or two. The party can go until dawn, and the 15-euro cover includes one drink.

Recuperate on the beach, this time at Psarou, followed by a decidedly over-the-top lunch at Nammos (Psarou Beach; 30-22890-22440), purveyor of 1,450-euro bottles of Cristal and 110-euro-per-kilo grilled lobster. It also serves an amazing homemade tagliatelle with scorpion fish but, at just 26 euros, this is kind of missing the point of Nammos. Ostentation is right at home amid summer’s wildly see-and-be-seen crowd, many of whom arrive by yacht and are shuttled ashore in vintage mahogany skiffs. The restaurant’s whitewashed beach shack décor provides a crisp backdrop for the display of deeply suntanned skin, vividly colored pareos and important jewelry. Psarou also features such vital amenities as a day spa, a hair salon and an outpost of the chic boutique Luisa called Luisa Beach (30-22890-22015), just in case someone left her Missoni gown in the plane’s overhead compartment.

THE BASICS

There are no direct flights from the United States to Mykonos. From Athens, both Aegean Airlines (30-2106-261000; www.aegeanair.gr) and Olympic (800-223-1226;www.olympicairlines.com) offer frequent flights to the island starting at about 100 euros ($153 at $1.53 to the euro) each way.

A rental car — or scooter — is essential for anyone who wants to leave the herd centered in Mykonos Town. Hertz has one-week rentals from the Mykonos airport starting at about 225 euros.

Hotel Belvedere (School of Fine Arts District, Mykonos Town; 30-22890-25122;www.belvederehotel.com), a gated compound with a lively pool, is a playground of the beautiful people. Double rooms start at 250 euros in summer.

Cavo Tagoo (30-22890-23692; www.cavotagoo.gr), popular for its sunset views and cocktails, has 80 super-slick white minimalist rooms — each with a jolt of bold color — a bit farther up the hill above Mykonos Town. Doubles start at 400 euros.

Greek recipes - Moussaka

1 onion , finely chopped
olive oil
1 garlic clove , crushed
750g minced lamb
1 tsp cinnamon
100ml white wine
400g tin plum tomatoes
2 tbsp chopped parsley
2 aubergines , sliced
600ml milk
bay leaf
4 black peppercorns
75g butter
75g flour
4 potatoes , peeled, cooked and sliced
2 eggs

Fry the onion in a little oil until soft, then add the garlic. After a minute, add the mince and brown, breaking up any lumps. Add the cinnamon, wine and tomatoes, simmer for 30 minutes, bubble off any excess liquid and stir in the parsley.
Meanwhile, brown the aubergines in a little oil on both sides then drain on kitchen paper. Bring the milk to a simmer with the bay leaf and peppercorns. Heat the butter in a pan, stir in the flour and gradually add the milk, stirring continually until you have a smooth sauce. Strain and season.
Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Layer the cooked meat sauce and aubergine in an ovenproof dish, top with the potatoes and season. Whisk the eggs into the white sauce and spoon over. Bake for 30-40 minutes until brown.

Greek recipes - Spinach & feta filo pie

2 onions , halved and sliced
butter
2 garlic cloves , crushed
500g spinach , washed and roughly chopped
grating nutmeg
200g feta cheese , cumbled
2 eggs , beaten
4 large sheets filo pastry

Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Cook the onions in a large knob of butter until soft and turning golden. Add the garlic and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the spinach in batches and cook until wilted. Cool, then tip into a bowl (leaving behind any excess liquid from the spinach) and mix in the nutmeg, feta, eggs and season.
Melt 30g more butter, and butter a non-stick springform cake tin, about 20-22cm. Put the first sheet of filo in the tin and brush with butter, letting the excess hang over the sides. Keep going with the rest of the sheets, turning a little before adding each additional pastry sheet and brushing all over with butter. When all the pastry is used up, tip in the filling and fold over the excess pastry to cover. Butter the top then bake in the oven for about 20-30 minutes until the filo is crisp and golden. Leave for 5 minutes before turning out and cutting into wedges to serve.

800g medium-size potatoes , skin on, thinly sliced
4 large tomatoes , thinly sliced
1 aubergine , thinly sliced
4 garlic cloves , chopped
3 tbsp oregano leaves, plus extra for sprinkling
85g pitted Kalamata olives , halved
5 tbsp olive oil , plus a drizzle
100g feta cheese , crumbled
4 lamb steaks

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Layer up half the potato, tomato and aubergine in a baking dish, scattering with garlic, oregano and olives, and drizzling with oil and seasoning as you go.
Scatter over the feta, then repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used up. Finish with potatoes and a little oil.
Bake for 50 mins or until the veg are tender (cover with foil if they're getting too brown). Top with the lamb steaks, rubbing with a little more oil and seasoning. Bake for 15-20 mins more until the lamb is cooked. Allow to rest and cool a bit before scattering with oregano and serving with crusty bread.

Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the fifth largest one in the Mediterranean Sea. Crete is divided in to four prefectures.

Chania

The region of Chania (Haniá), on the western side of the island, is dominated by the impressive White Mountains (in Greek: Lefká Óri) and its famous National Park, which occupy the largest part of the region.The Prefecture of Chania provides tourist services and activities of all kinds, satisfying all the choices. Heraklion

The largest and most densely populated region on the island of Crete is Heraklion (Iráklion). Lasithi

The mythical palm tree forest of Váï, the Gulf of Mirabello, the windmills on the Plateau of Lassíthi (the largest in Crete), beaches lapped by crystalline water, beautiful cities and luxurious hotel resorts all make up a rather fascinating world.

Due to its geographical position between Africa, Europe, and Asia Minor and due to its mild climate, Crete became a center of culture as early as Neolithic times. The first prehistoric settlements appeared in Crete around 6000 BC while in 2600 BC settlers who knew how to craft bronze arrived in Crete. It was then that the illustrious course of the Minoan Civilization began, reaching its peak around 1950 BC with the erection of the imposing palaces in Knossos, Faistos, and Malia.

Mythology has it that it was in a cave of Crete where the goddess Rhea hid the newborn Zeus. In that cave, Zeus was brought up by the nymphs while the demonical Kouretes would strike their shields loudly so that Cronus may not hear the crying of the baby Zeus and eat it. It was also to Crete that Zeus, disguised as a bull, took Europa so that they may enjoy their love together. Their union produced a son, Minos, who ruled Crete and turned it into a mighty island empire of the seas. In Minoan times, even Attica would pay a tribute tax to Crete, until Theseus, the Athenian prince, killed the Minotaur. The truth behind the myth is the existence of a mighty and wealthy kingdom and of a civilisation that is considered the most ancient one on the European continent.

In 1450 BC and again in 1400 BC the Minoan Civilization was successively devastated possibly due to the eruption of the volcano of Thera and was eventually led to its decline. In the wake of the devastation the Dorians arrived to settle on the island. They were later followed by the Romans. After the Roman rule, Crete becomes a province of Byzantium until the arrival of the Arabs who occupied the island for an entire century (824-961 BC). During the Arab domination, Crete became the lair of pirates who were based out of Handakas, present day Heraklion.

Next, Crete fell under Byzantine rule again until the arrival of the Venetians who occupied the island for approximately 5 centuries leaving their stamp on the island’s culture. After the fall of Handakas in 1669, the Turkish Occupation began marked by ferocious and bloody uprisings. At the end of the 19^th century Turkish rule came to an end. The Cretan State was created with the King of Greece as the island’s High Commissioner. In 1913, Crete was finally joined officially with Greece.

Dodecanese Islands

The island complex of Dodecanese in south-eastern Aegean is the sunniest corner in Greece. Twelve large islands and numerous smaller ones with crystal clear waters, sandy or pebbly beaches, important archaeological finds, imposing Byzantine and medieval monuments and unique traditional settlements are waiting to be discovered. Did you know that after WWII Kálymnos remained the only Greek sponge-harvesting industry supplying both domestic and international markets with sea sponges? The first picture to see upon arriving on the island is Póthia, both the capital and the port of Kálymnos, spreading amphitheatrically on two hills. Visit among others the castle of Chrissoheria and the Archaeological Museum. Set out on a day trip to the traditional settlement of Horió, the former capital of the island, and admire interesting Byzantine monuments (like the Great Castle). The early-Christian settlement at Eliniká is a must-see, since it is perhaps the best preserved settlement in Greece. A perfect occasion to visit the island would be the International Climbing Festival in May, a unique festival that will thrill the action fans! The culinary enthusiasts should taste mouth watering delights, such as sweet smelling thyme honey, juicy tangerines, homemade mizithra cheese, delicious sea-dried lobster tail, and sea ray preserved in sea water!

Pserimos means “looking for the ideal destination for serene, relaxing holidays”. Enjoy sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, swim in paradise bays (like the small bay of Vathí), rent a boat and sail around the island’s beaches, follow several hiking routes, participate in local fairs (the most famous ones take place on 15th August) or go scuba diving and climbing. Telendos. Did you know that this tiny beautiful island formed part of Kálymnos in antiquity, but was separated in 554 AD due to a devastating earthquake? Today there is only one small village on the island. Follow walking paths through the dense pine forest on the south of the island, where also ruins of Byzantine residencies still stand. Swim in sun-drenched beaches (like Plaka, Potha, and Paradise), go scuba diving and explore the ancient city sunk between Kálymnos and Télendos or go hiking, climbing, wind surfing, canoe-kayaking and spear fishing! You can reach Télendos by boat departing from the cove of Mirtiés at Kálymnos.

Karpathos. An island blessed with an abundance of streams, pine-tree forests, vineyards, olive groves, rocky caves (which are actually home to monachus monachus) and mountainous landscapes, Kárpathos is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and lovers of deep-rooted tradition. The villages of the island seem like open folklore museums, whereas their inhabitants are still dressed in old traditional costumes, and speak their local, old dialect. The rich folklore tradition of villages, such as Ólympos and Mesohóri, will weave a powerful spell over you. Even if you are a wind surfing fan, “anemoessa” Kárpathos (“she of the many winds”, according to Homer) is the perfect place to exercise your favourite sport. Tilos. Ragged mountainscape, densely forested ranges and hilly vistas, verdant valleys –home to four hundred species of flowers and herbs–, and habitat of rare species of birds. Visit Meyálo Horió, the island’s capital, with its imposing stone houses and narrow alleys. Leros. Welcome to the island of Artemis, the goddess of forests and hunting, according to mythology. Visit Patmos at Easter, when deeply religious and spiritual celebrations are held throughout the Holy Week.

Arki and Marathi. Visit a dreamy cluster of islands east of Pátmos with sparse vegetation, old whitewashed houses, and cute little tavernas. Get into a boat and sail around Maráthi, another small island with a beautiful beach covered with lentisks and tamarisk (salt cedar).

Astipalea is the westernmost island of the Dodecanese, located at the point where the Dodecanese meet the Cyclades. This is the reason why in Astipálea the characteristics of both island complexes blend together to create the island’s uniquely varied scenery. Visit Hóra, the island’s capital and port, one of the most picturesque settlements of the Aegean. At the hilltop stands imposingly Hora’s castle, surrounded by small houses with whitewashed walls, blue doors and wooden balconies overlooking the open blue sea below.

Kassos. Despite its small size, Kássos was once a mighty maritime and commercial power. The well-preserved mansions that still stand in Fre, the island’s capital and main port, reflect today this former grandeur. Take a stroll around Boúka, an old pirate lair, with moored small fishing boats, traditional coffee shops and its old lighthouse. Don’t forget to visit Armáthia, the largest of the islands around Kássos, where you can find some excellent beaches, like Marmara and Karavostassi!

Simi. There are many reasons to visiting Simi apart from experiencing its unique cosmopolitan atmosphere, and wandering around its remarkable neo-classical settlement. Many visitors, for instance, come here to venerate the miraculous icon of Archangel Michael kept at the monastery of Panormítis, one of the most significant monasteries of the Dodecanese. Alternatively, you can come to Sími in summer to attend the famous Simi Festival, which includes among others classical music concerts, dance performances, and art exhibitions.

Halki. Enjoy peaceful holidays in the “Island of Peace and Friendship”, where young people from all over the world gather here every year for their annual meeting! The town of Halki or Niborió, the island’s capital, is listed as a traditional settlement and it is amphitheatrically built overlooking the clear-blue sea, whereas impressive neoclassical mansions reveal the prosperity the island enjoyed in the past.

Nisyros. Take the opportunity to visit an unspoiled destination formed by volcanic eruptions. It is rather impressive that today Nísyros is still an active volcanic centre together with the volcanic centers of Milos, Santorini and Methana! Actually at the village of Nikia there is a “Volcanic Museum”, the only one of its kind in Greece, exhibiting samples from the most characteristic volcanic rocks of Nisyros. Strolling along the narrow streets of beautiful Mandráki, the island’s capital and port, is a richly rewarding experience. Don’t forget to observe its colourful houses which are actually built with hewn slabs of andesite and dacite (volcanic material)!

Lipsi is the largest island belonging to a cluster of many others islets. It forms part of the Natura Network. It is an ideal destination for relaxing, and serene holidays. Here, both landscape and people will definitely help you find inner peace and tranquility. Lipsi is also surrounded by countless uninhabited islets ideal for bird watching.

Agathonissi is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese; it consists of three large traditional settlements (Agios Georgios, Megalo Horio and Mikro Horio). Agathonissi has a significant and vulnerable ecosystem rendering it an important habitat of rare bird species. Together with the nearby islands it belongs to the Natura Network as well.

Kastelorizo lies at the easternmost end of Greece, a stone’s throw away from the Turkish coast. Its main settlement is filled with cheerfully painted houses of exceptional architecture, awe-inspiring churches and picturesque alleys. Taste the island’s traditional sweets katoumári and stráva, and organise a boat excursion to Galazio Spileo, the largest and most spectacular sea cave in Greece. Don’t forget to visit the nearby legendary island of Ro where the famous “Lady of Ro” Despina Achladioti used to raise the Greek flag every day.

Ionian islands

What is more, the traits of the Ionian Islands are perfectly combined with a flawless tourism infrastructure, excellent hotel accommodations, restaurants, diving centers, sea sports, cultural events, and a multitude of sights, historic monuments and museums worth visiting.

Scattered along the western coastline of Central Greece, the Ionian Islands as they are known, are an island cluster comprising twelve small and large islands whose total surface area comes to 2,200 square kilometers. Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu (Kerkyra), Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxi are the six, large Ionian Islands. Antipaxi, Erikousa, Mathraki, Othoni, Meganisi and the deserted islets of Strofades south of Zakynthos are the smaller Ionian Islands.

Together with the island of Kythira and the neighboring Antikythira the islands form the island cluster of Eptanisa. Nevertheless it should be noted that Kythira and Antikythira are completely cut off from the rest of the Ionian islands situated as they are across southern Peloponnese and the coast of Laconia.

Once, the Ionian Islands were part of Central Greece but were torn apart when the terrain sank due to the seismic activity along the great coastline fault of the Ionian Sea. This accounts not only for the ragged shores and hauntingly beautiful beaches but it also accounts for the islands’ tall mountains, once part of the Pindos mountain range which crosses Central Greece. The Ionian islands have a mild and temperate climate which makes them the ideal location for vacation or residence. Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a longhistory, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5^th Century BC (the “Golden Age of Pericles”) – the culmination of Athens’ long, fascinating history – the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. Over the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments - a rare historical palimpsest. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in two centuries since it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm.

A large part of the town’s historic centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites (“archaeological park”), reconstructing – to a large degree – the ancient landscape.

Around Acropolis

The tour starts at the temple of Olympian Zeus (6^th c. B.C.), one of the largest in antiquity and close byHadrian’s Arch (131 A.D.), which forms the symbolic entrance to the city. From there, walking along Dionysou Areopaghitou Street (on the south side of the Acropolis) you pass the ancient Theatre of Dionysos (5^th c. B.C.) where most of the works by Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylos and Aristophanes were performed. Continuing, you will reach the ruins of the Asklepieion (5^th c. B.C.) and the Stoa of Eumenes (2th c. B.C.) and from there the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, which was built in 161 A.D. and is nowadays the venue of the performances of the Athens Festival.

From there you climb up to the sacred rock of the Acropolis, the site of some of the most important masterpieces of worldwide architecture and art, the most renowned of which is the Parthenon temple. Apart from this, also impressive are the Propylaea, the temple of the Athene Nike and the Erechtheion, while you must not skip a visit to the Museum, located close to the Parthenon. Moreover, from the rock you have an impressive view of the city.

Only 300m away from the sacred rock of Acropolis stands the impressive Acropolis Museum, one of the most important contemporary works of architecture in Athens. It is made of steel, glass and concrete and it houses 4,000 priceless finds from the Acropolis monuments that represent its history and function as the most important religious centre of ancient Athens.

Coming down from the Acropolis you arrive at the Areios Pagos, the most ancient law court of the world. Opposite it is Philopappou Hill, with its beautiful cobbled little roads and the Roman monument by the same name on its top, while close by is the Pnyx, where the citizens of ancient Athens used to assemble and exert their democratic rights.

Walking farther along the pedestrian road you arrive at the Ancient Agora, which was the commercial, political and religious centre of ancient Athens. A visit to the archaeological site will give you the opportunity to become acquainted with the workings of Classical Athenian democracy.

From there, via Ermou Street, you arrive at the Kerameikos, the largest cemetery of the ancient city, with impressive tomb sculptures and stelae. The Iridanos River, sacred in antiquity, runs through the archaeological site.

Around neighborhoods of the historical centre

The “core” of the historic centre is the Plaka neighborhood (at the eastern side of the Acropolis), which has been inhabited without interruption since antiquity. When you walk through the narrow labyrinthine streets lined with houses and mansions from the time of the Turkish occupation and the Neoclassical period (19^th c.), you will have the impression of travelling with a “time machine”. You will encounter ancient monuments, such as the Lysikrates Monument, erected by a wealthy donor of theatrical performances, the Roman Agorawith the famed “Tower of the Winds” (1^st c. B.C.) and Hadrian’s Library (132 A.D.), scores of bigger and smaller churches, true masterpieces of Byzantine art and architecture, as well as remnants of the Ottoman period (Fetihie Mosque, Tzistaraki Mosque, the Turkish Bath near the Tower of the Winds, the Muslim Seminary, et al.). There are also some interesting museums (Folk Art, Greek Children’s Art, Popular Musical Instruments, Frysira Art Gallery, etc.), lots of picturesque tavernas, cafés, bars, as well as shops selling souvenirs and traditional Greek products.

Continuing from Plaka you arrive at Monastiraki, a characteristic area of “old” Athens, with narrow streets and small buildings where the city’s traditional bazaar (Yousouroum) is held. Close to it is the Psyrri area, a traditional neighborhood which during the past few years has evolved into one of the most important “centres” of the town’s nightlife, with scores of bars, tavernas, ouzeris, clubs, etc.

However, the “heart” of the historical centre is the traditional commercial neighborhood, with more than 2,500 shops of all kinds, which spreads out over the streets surrounding Ermou Street (the city’s best-known commercial street). The western “border” of the area is Athinas Street, where the foodstuff commerce is concentrated, reminding one strongly of the Middle East. Here are situated, among others, the neoclassical mansions of the Town Hall, the Municipal Market (where meat, fish and vegetables are sold) and spaciousKotzias Square.

Within the boundary of Athens’ historical centre also are the picturesque neighborhoods of Makriyianni(close to the Acropolis, where the Acropolis Museum stands), Ano Petralona, Theseion (where you will find small interesting museums and scores of cafés, bars and restaurants), Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio, as well as the Gazi area, with the former Gas works, which now have been turned into a cultural centre of the Athens municipality (“Technopolis”).

Downtown

Syntagma and Omonia are the main central squares of the town; they are linked by Stadiou Street and Panepistimiou Avenue, along which some of the town’s most beautiful Neoclassical buildings have been erected. Dominating Syntagma Squareis the Greek Parliament building and in front of it the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones in traditional costume. From this square starts the beautifulNational Garden (40 acres), south of which stands the impressive Zappeion Mansion (1874-1888). From there you can continue towards the Presidential Mansion (1897) and thence to the Panathenaikon(Kallimarmaro) Stadium, where the first Olympic Games in modern history were held (1896). From there, crossing the Mets neighborhood, the road leads you to the First Cemetery, the oldest one in Athens, basically an outdoor sculpture display with a wealth of wonderful monumental tombstones by some of the most important sculptors of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

From Omonia Square starts Patission street, a busy street with interesting buildings, amongst which are the Neoclassical mansions of the Polytechnic School and the National Archaeological Museum, which ranks among the leading museums in the world and hosts rare art treasures from the Neolithic era up to the Roman period.

Close to the museum is the Exarheia area, a charming and very lively neighborhood, traditional a meeting point and home to many students and artists. From Exarcheia, crossing the Neapoli neighborhood, you can climb the verdant Lycavittos Hill. From its top you have a view of the entire city, all the way to the sea. On the other side of the hill is the Kolonaki neighborhood, whose boundary is Vassilissis Sophias Avenue, one of the most grandiose streets of Athens with beautiful buildings, many museums (Cycladic Art, Benaki, Byzantine and Christian Museum, War Museum, National Gallery) and green areas. In Kolonaki, which is considered to be the most “aristocratic” area of the centre of Athens, you will find many shops selling expensive brands and high couture, modern restaurants, bars and cafés, while it is worthwhile to take a stroll through the central streets with their art déco, art nouveau and interbellum buildings.

Around suburbs

The southern suburbs, located on the coast of the Saronic Gulf, a recreational and cultural park is being planned, comprising the existing sports facilities. They offer many opportunities to take a walk along theseaside, while you will also find many beautiful organized and free beaches, large shopping centers and nightclubs (especially during the summer). In the Maroussi suburb (north of the centre) are the facilities of the Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens, where the majority of the athletic events were held during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Kifissia (north of Maroussi) is also worth a visit, with its beautiful villas and impressive mansions.

Moreover, if you wish to leave the centre behind you, you may visit, amongst others, the neighboring town ofPiraeus, Greece’s main port (which nowadays forms one big conglomerate with Athens), the Daphni Monastery (11 km. west), one of the most significant Byzantine monuments of the country (12^th c.) with unique mosaics, the Kaisariani Monastery (5 km. east), which was founded in the 2^nd century, the Temple of Poseidon (5^th c. B.C.) on Cape Sounion (58 km. south), following a wonderful route along the coast, the area of the battle of Marathon (490 B.C.) with the Tomb of Marathon, the archaeological sites of Eleusina (23 km. west), of Amphiareion (48 km. northeast), of Vravron (38 km. east) and Ramnous (close to Marathon), as well as the wonderful surrounding mountain massifs of Parnitha, Penteli and Hymettos, all suitable for hiking.

Let’s hike through the Valia Calda National Park!
Set out on a fascinating journey to Valia Calda National Park, situated at an isolated mountainous area of Grevena. You’re invited to take in the wild beauty of this forested area, which is rich in pine and beech trees, and forms one of the most attractive trekking destinations in Europe. Admire impressive mountain ranges, forested slopes and the breathtaking natural landscape unfolding before your eyes. Meet the challenge to explore the mysteries of nature, and feel your adrenaline rush. Hit amazing trails in a truly unspoiled paradise, where crystal clear rivers flowing through the forested area of Aoos meet the meandering Arkoudorema River.

The purity and the ecological value of the mountainous ecosystem of the Valia Calda National park is enormous, as this forest is a refuge for many wild animals, several mammals (wolf, fox, wild hog and mountain antelope), rare bird species (the golden eagle and the black stork) as well as reptiles. In this area many species are protected. The Forest also hosts 415 plant species and 86 mushroom species. In the highlands of Valia Calda and during spring, you are likely to spot brown bears ambling down to Arkoudórema (meaning Bear Creek) to drink water and searching for their food.

Start a trekking adventure in Ziákas, a village that lies 23km west of Grevená. Note that in order to reach the trekking path, you first need an off-road vehicle. Leave Ziákas, and follow the path to the Exarchos spring. There you will see straight ahead the Avyó peak, on the eastern flanks of which you will spot a beautiful lake.

You pass through Perivóli, one of the most attractive villages of Grevená, and soon the road turns left towards Valia Calda. Don’t forget to make a stop-over at the “Stavrós” location (meaning crossroads) to take in a panoramic view over the valley. Upon reaching a natural spring (where usually the shepherds bring their flocks to drink water), you will realise that at this point the dirt road ends.

Leave the four-wheeler, and follow the trail leading to the European path E6. Cross a small wooden bridge; after taking a 10-minute walk, leave the trail E6 behind you and head for the Flégkas lakes. Hit the trail going uphill through old beech trees, and admire a lush green meadow on your right. On your left, you will spot thetwo mountain Flégkas lakes.

After passing the lakes, the trail continues uphill to the peak, where the artificial Aóos Lake lies amidst spectacular mountain scenery.

The best way to go back is by walking down the ridge. The alternative route by the lakes leads through very steep slopes that require technical climbing

Mykonos

Most of us start making plans for this year’s trips already and, sometimes, coming up with new, interesting (and affordable) destinations can be tricky and time consuming. Here are some ideas to check out for your next trip in Greece!

Athens

The capital of Greece remains the best choice when traveling outside the high season. Honestly, you wouldn’t want to be in Athens during July and August, anyway , unless you are a big fan of scorching temperatures.

But outside the summer months, Athens is the best place to be. You can visit the archeological sights when they are not crowded (and sometimes not pay an entrance fee either) , enjoy the nightlife, eat in taverns which are not overrun by tourists and even take a day trip to one of the close-by islands (ferries run year-round between Athens and Aegina and Hydra, for example). Plan to stay at least for 3 days and visit the important historical sites (and maybe even some museums).

Due to the turmoil in Athens, it’s never been cheaper to visit the place. I’ve looked up accommodation for mid-March 2013 and prices are around €20 /night / double room in a hotel.

Stavros, Crete

If you want to fly on a popular island (which means there are plenty of flights going there) but don’t want to face the crowds, then Stavros, on Crete, is an excellent choice for 2013. It’s located about 30 min drive from Chania and is ideal for those who like to take long walks (runs) during their holiday.

There are some apart-hotels in the area but no hostels. Still, a night here will set you back from €28 /night / double room in the middle of May 2013.

Gavdos

And if you really want to go off the beaten path, then Gavdos is what you should consider. Again, you can fly into Heraklion (Crete) easily but then you need to take a ferry to the southernmost island in the Mediterranean. And yes, there isn’t much to do here than relax on the beach. The island is believed to be the mythological home of the enchantress Calypso and there’s a cave which can be visited and some say it’s Calypso’s cave (while others say the real cave vanished some hundred years ago).

Pack a tent or look up accommodation . You cannot really book directly online but you can talk directly to the owners (and usually pay 10% in advance so that they know you are serious about going).

Syros

It’s another beautiful island, off the beaten track, and an excellent choice for the Easter Holiday in Greece. (In 2013, Orthodox Easter falls on May 5). The island is the center of government for the Cyclades but most people do not work in the tourism industry; which means you get a chance to see the real life of Greek people.

If you do plan to come to Syros during the Easter weekend make sure to book the domestic leg of the trip ahead of time (it can be ferry or flight , from Athens; or ferry from another larger island in the Cyclades).

You can walk the narrow back streets of Ermoupolis (the island’s capital city), check out the medieval city , spend time in a public plaza and spend time on the beach.

Prices can be as low as €25 / night/ double room during the Easter weekend (if you purchase in advance).

Alonissos

It is another off the beaten path island, this time located in the Sporades. Years ago it was incredibly difficult to get here but now it’s getting somewhat easier (ferry from Agios Konstantinos). The island is a gem for those interested in photography. If you are an avid swimmer, you are also lucky: the waters are some of the cleanest in the Aegean.

Just put on your walking shoes and explore the island. Alternatively, you can rent a car (or a scooter). Better yet, talk to some locals and see if you can get your hands on a boat.

Price-wise you can get away with €19 /night/double room in a 2-star hotel if you book in advance.

Meteora

The Meteora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on natural sandstone pillars. It’s one of the largest and most important such complexes in Greece. Five of those are inhabited by men and one by women.

Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece and its largest city. It’s also one of the oldest cities in the world, with a recorded history of roughly 3400 years. Classically, Athens was a very powerful city-state within the Greek empire and is credited as the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of Western civilization. It was host to the first modern-day Olympic games and had previously been host to the ancient games.

Santorini

Santorini is a circular archipelago of volcanic islands in the Aegean Sea. It’s what’s left of a giant volcanic explosion that destroyed the earliest settlements. Originally, Santorini was a single island, but the volcano left a giant caldera that is now open to the Aegean Sea. There are no rivers on the islands and water has traditionally come from rain runoff collected in cisterns (though there’s now a desalinization plant on the island).

Kefalonia

Kefalonia is the largest island in western Greece. There are two major settlements on the island, Argostolia and Lixouri, with a number of other smaller settlements. There are numerous mountains and ports on the island. There are theories that Kefalonia may have been the home of Odysseus as described by Homer.

Delphi

In Greek mythology, Delphi was the home of the Delphic oracle. It was also a major site for the worship of Apollo after he slew the Python. The Temple of Apollo is one of the most recognizable ruins at Delphi (and is shown in multiple photos below). Delphi was also the site of the Pythian Games, one of the precursors of the Modern Olympics.

Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands (the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea as a whole) and also the most populous. Historically, it was the center of the Minoan civilization. It’s a very mountainous island, with mountain ranges reaching more than 2,400m high. It also has more than 1,000km of coastline.

The Acropolis of Athens is the most well-known acropolis in the world. Help save Greece! It's time for tactical travel

It seems a bit beside the point, when demonstrators in Athens are shaking the world economy's disconcertingly fragile frame, and a nation is forced to choose between economic masochism and who knows what. But Greece is very beautiful; and, in fact, it's not beside the point at all. Tourism is one remaining hope for the Greek economy and so, as summer blooms, it is worth thinking about some of the artistic and architectural reasons for going there.

Delphi in Greece has a strong claim to being the most stunning landscape on earth. It has stayed in my mind ever since my one brief visit there as the archetype of all classical landscape paintings, the dream location that Turner, Claude and Poussin were all somehow trying to evoke in their glowing visions of temples among vistas of unfolding hills. In my memory, Delphi's crystal-blue sky, bright white marble and silver olive leaves sparkle more than Turner's brightest canvas. This landscape seems airborne, weightless. Its pure colours and the perfect harmony of culture and nature lift it into a fantasy world of gods and goddesses. At Delphi, the Greek myths become real.

It was a place of holiness shared by all the rival city states of ancient Greece, where they sent gifts and raised sanctuaries and shrines. All this was done in homage to the Delphic oracle of Apollo. Games were held here, the classical Hellenic world gathered here, and what remains is a captivating landscape that fills you with joy, rhapsody, and a sense of what human beings are capable of.

This is the thought-provoking thing about Greek antiquities: they make you believe in us, the humans. The civilisation of ancient Greece combined curiosity, imagination and a passion for beauty such that it has been an example for us ever since – the "classical" model of a healthy culture. When you visit the great Greek archaeological sites you see thatRenaissance Italians and 18th-century neoclassicists were right to revere the ancient Greeks. The Acropolis in Athens seems, like Delphi, to soar with sheer beauty – not just to tower above the modern city but to actually connect, somehow, with the gods of Olympus.

From the lovely coastal town of Nafplion you can visit the great theatre of Epidauros, on Crete you can trace the legend of the Minotaur; these places can haunt your dreams for the rest of your life. And they have beaches, too.

A cultural holiday in Greece right now may help this beautiful land, and therefore the European economy. But it may also serve as a reminder in times of chaos of all that humans can achieve. Greece, amid the storm, contains some of the greatest marvels you will ever see: stones that reflect us humans in the most flattering way. For humanity is the eighth wonder of the ancient Greek world.

Healthy holidays: a philosophy walk in southern Greece

It was one of those perfect days designed for kicking off your shoes, slapping on some sunscreen and reaching for the brain's off-switch: the warm Greek sun was glowing in a vivid blue sky, the Ionian sea was glittering and the white sand beach stretched out into the hazy distance. "It's a perfect day for sunbathing," I murmured to my wife.

That may have been so, but we were about to grapple with questions bigger than "Where did I put the suntan lotion?" We were in southernGreece for deeper reasons than simple relaxation.

So, rather than reclining on a sunlounger, we found ourselves sitting with eight others on wooden chairs under a 600-year-old olive tree, waiting for a professor of philosophy to enlighten us about the purpose of human existence.

In the fourth century BC, the original Greek philosophers – Socrates, Aristotle and the rest – would walk with ordinary people through markets and streets, arguing and debating as they went. The philosophy walk, a new activity offered by the Costa Navarino resort in the Messinia region of the Peloponnese, aims to emulate that, but with walks in the countryside.

The luxury resort, which opened in 2010 and comprises two hotels, six restaurants, spa, outdoor cinema and golf courses, may seem an unlikely base for such pursuits, but the walks are part of its "Authenticity Programme" of activities to help visitors delve into Greek history.

Why not embrace a few days of sun, sea and Socrates, and try, as the organisers of the walk suggest, to enjoy the "physical pleasure" of thinking? Considering the severe economic woes of modern Greece, perhaps the philosophy of the country's ancient past can shed some light on how to live a good life.

The philosophy walks are led by academics: ours was Professor Pericles Vallianos who, with his steel-rimmed glasses and long black coat, bore an uncanny resemblance to Fabio Capello. "Where we are standing is the cradle of the ancient Greek civilisation," he boomed. "It is a place full of cultural meaning and memories and myths."

Today's talk was about democracy – on other days the topics could be nature, humanity or ethics – and the professor handed us some printed sheets detailing Euripides' views on democracy.

"Politics was invented in ancient Greece," he said. "In ancient Greece politics became an object of critical discussion. The political institutions and structures were not taken for granted – they were there to be criticised and discussed."

But democracy, for the ancient Greeks, could only work in societies with small populations who all had a shared common interest. The professor's description of the original concept of democracy made me reflect on how different that notion of community was with from the way societies are organised today.

Modern city life, the life I know, isn't about shared interest and small communities but about being just another stranger in the crowd. That can be a good thing, but, as the rioting last summer showed, when people don't feel like they have a stake in the society, they don't feel any loyalty towards it either.

We all listened intently. Having talked for 15 minutes, the professor invited us to get out of our seats and set off walking with him – and to feel free to ask questions. "Isn't it a bit odd to be starting a philosophy walk on the golf course of a luxury hotel?" I asked. "Not at all," he said. "This may be a luxury resort, but philosophy is not a luxury – it is about the basic questions of human existence."

The starting point of Greek philosophy was nature, and the professor invited us to look with fresh eyes at our surroundings and to reflect on the nature and beauty of the Messinian landscape. I saw my wife cradling our baby – who was on her first trip outside Britain – and thought about how for Laila everything really was new. Messinia is an especially stunning, unspoilt part of Greece; narrow roads lined by olive and orange groves, the home of King Nestor, written of in Homer's Odyssey, whose palace, built 1,300 years before Christ, is one of the region's most notable archaeological sites.

We had spent the previous morning at the stunning Voidokilia beach, a natural horseshoe-shaped bay with sparkling green waters and powdery white sand. It must be one of the world's most spectacular beaches.

The shadows started to lengthen, the sun began to set and the blue sky turned pink. A few others engaged the professor on the subject of the ancient Greeks' reliance on slaves, but I had another question: "Considering the mess that Greece is in today, and how nervous people are about their jobs and livelihoods, isn't thinking about philosophy a bit pointless?"

The professor turned to me and said, "No. That is why philosophy is even more necessary! When things are unstable, thinking about these ancient ideas provides some kind of reference."

And with that, the philosophy walk was almost over. Had it made me think better and harder? It had been stimulating listening to the professor – the walk was like a window through which to peer afresh at one's own life. And spending a few hours walking in the beautiful Messinian countryside, surrounded by nature in a landscape of wizened trees, mythic kings and ancient gods was a wonderful reminder of the virtues of simple pleasures – of having what you want, and wanting what you have.

Climbing in Greece

Once the island of Kalymnos in Greece's Dodecanese cursed the hand nature had dealt it. Huge rock escarpments line its western coast, overlooking the Aegean. The slopes below, covered in wild oregano, thyme and mint, were good only for goats and keeping bees. These days, however, the same cliffs are seen as the island's saviour in the midst of a recession that has driven away both Greek and Italian tourists.

The first clue was supplied on EasyJet's flight from Gatwick to Kos, from where the half-hour ferry to Kalymnos departs. In the check-in queue there was a surfeit of North Face bags and groups in hooded soft shells: climbers. In the past decade Kalymnos, with its pebble beaches and lack of ancient sites, has been transformed from one of the less-favoured Greek islands into an international climbing mecca.

We arrived in Pothia, the island's biggest town, a jumble of brightly coloured houses, to be met off the ferry by a battered car sent by Sakis Apartments. There were two teenagers in the car listening to Michael Jackson's "Beat It". Their mother drove us round the coast to Masouri. The apartment, like the car, had seen better days, but it was very cheap and we didn't intend to spend much time in it.

Kalymnos is a sport climbing venue with more than 2,000 routes – 100 more were established this winter alone – and with vast tracts of rock still left unexplored. What that means is that the climbs are pre-equipped with permanent drilled-in bolts. So all that is required to climb are rock shoes, a 70m rope and around 20 quick draws (little slings with two carabiners for attaching the rope to the bolts). While it is not without some risk – accidents still occur – it is one of the safer forms of climbing.

It is perhaps because of this that Kalymnos attracts such a wide range of climbers both in terms of age and ability. There are teenage climbers travelling on skateboards, climbers with young families and some in their 70s. The scene around the climbing is laid back and very sociable. Away from the crags, climbers gather to enjoy a cold beer in Masouri's bars, including the Climbers' Station or Glaros Snack Bar – owned by British expatriate Steve McDonnell and his wife Sue, who help administer the island's bolt fund that supplies the hardware to equip new routes.

One day we wandered up to the area of the Grande Grotta, one of the island's most famous climbing sectors – a vast cave shaped like an open mouth whose roof is festooned with a forest of large hanging stalactites. We sat at the cave's mouth to watch. High above, a figure was moving improbably among the stalactites, upside down for more than 25m.

Our own destination, however, was not the upside-down world of the Grande Grotta's roof but another sector just around the corner – more friendly territory in the form of a slab of rising rock that curves into a cave, sharp and as textured as a cheese grater. There was not much for my feet to stand on, only the rough friction of the rock. And at its most difficult section, there was only a tiny scalloped lip big enough for two fingers to hold on to. I stepped up and felt my toes begin to slip, but there was now a larger hold within reach and a bolt which I hastily clipped into. I was tying in to do a second climb when I recognised the man standing belaying next to me, a member of my climbing club who I hadn't run into for five years. We stopped to catch up while his daughter made easy work of her climb. The week turned out like that. Riding down Masouri's single main street one afternoon, I recognised two climbers from my local climbing wall, the Castle in north London.

One morning we rode the scooter down the hairpins and round the coast to the tiny village of Emporios. Two beekeepers in their suits were working on a cluster of hives on the slopes above. We parked the bike and followed a rocky gully that led up the hillside to a gorge high above. Kastri, our destination, was a magical spot, a narrow canyon whose mouth was first fortified in the 4th century BC and whose fortifications still remain pretty much intact. Out of the sun it was cool and beautiful, with a flat area carpeted with herbs overlooking the improbably blue sea below, a place as pleasant to relax in as to climb.

On the way home we stopped at the beach at Arginonta. There was a man selling cans of Coke at the kiosk, but no one else on the narrow strand of pale pebbles. We sat with our feet in the water. There was a splash, and a portly figure in a wetsuit roped to a small orange buoy popped out of the sea – a local spear fisherman carrying an octopus in one hand.

It struck me at that moment why Kalymnos felt so special. It is not just the climbing but the sense that genuine island life is still close to the surface – warm, unpretentious and friendly. We left Kalymnos certain that we will return.

It is a short taxi ride to the port of Mastichari, from where ferries travel to Kalymnos up to six times a day for ₤5 each way. Kalymnos has 2,000 climbing routes on solid and well-bolted limestone from F4a right up to F9a. Most of the climbing is on the west coast of the island. How your Greek summer holiday can help save Greece

The first obvious blow to Greek tourism came when the countrysuspended international rail services 16 months ago. Since then, it's gone right off the rails. Before last weekend's election, nightmare scenarios were painted in the media of food shortages, street protests and a withdrawal from the euro. Not exactly images designed to encourage Britons to book a holiday. While the focus was on Athens, the Greek islands were quietly going about their business – albeit with many empty tables and rooms but with a warm welcome to tourists who had travelled there. With the latest crisis averted, what does the rest of the summer hold for Greece? Will it be bargains all round, empty beaches and retsina on the house?

Is it a Greek tourism tragedy?

Not quite, although numbers are definitely sagging. More than 2.3 million Britons visited in 2011 – but bookings are down 11% so far this season. If sustained, that equates to 250,000 fewer British visits this year.

George Tsakiris, president of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, estimates that 500,000 summer bookings normally made in early June were lost because of uncertainty ahead of the election. Since then, Sunvil Holidays and other UK tour operators have reported a surge of bookings for travel during school holidays. Barrie Neilson, owner of Sailing Holidays, says: "We have an extremely slow July but August and September look reasonably OK."

Who's joining us on the beach?

Reports say that only half the normal number of Germans are visiting this year, with many fearing a negative reaction from locals. Such a decline in numbers will particularly affect Crete.

Many tourists from the old eastern bloc are now going to Greece but they tend to opt for "all inclusive" places and don't get out into local communities like the British. According to Neilson: "We're noticing a lot less people about than normal. The biggest effect for locals is the disappearance of local Greek tourists, who would come to the coast from the hinterland."

What sort of welcome can we expect to receive?

Open arms and bear hugs. Chris Wright, managing director of GIC The Villa Collection, says that it's like the Greece of 20 years ago – very friendly and very welcoming.

Jo Marsden of Whitchurch, Dorset, returned this week from a holiday on Paxos. "The spirit of the proprietors was relaxed and extremely affable. They couldn't do enough for the guests, who were mostly British," she says.

"This sense of hospitality extended to all the island's inhabitants. Prices were comparatively low from restaurants to boat trips and taxis. Our impression was that there was no thought of capitalising on the current Greek crisis."

What are the prices like?

As Marsden observes, prices in hotels and restaurants have come down across the board. There has been a de facto devaluation in Greece even though they are still in the euro. As the local population is forced to spend less, so prices come down. However, Keren Levy, who was in Paros the week before last, said: "Hotel and restaurant prices were not noticeably lower. Regular faces, the yearly visitors, seemed willing to pay them."

Noel Josephides, owner of Sunvil, has been selling holidays to Greece since 1970 and says the oversupply of hotels and airline seats also means the price of a package holiday is lower this summer: "During the boom years, too many hotels were built, and too many villas, too many apartments,, and now the price is being paid. Nothing is ever full because there is so much out there – and though tour operators have cut back, the no-frills airlines have poured on capacity so they, too, are rarely full."

What about the strikes?

With Greece so dependent on tourism, there's even a chance of less disruption to travel plans than usual this summer. According to Eftichios Vassilakis, vice-chair of Greek carrier Aegean Airlines, there have been no strikes in Athens in the past four months, "which is much better than last year".

A spokeswoman for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) in the UK said the same: "There have been fewer strikes this year than is the norm, and indeed fewer than in Italy."

What are the Greeks doing to bring us back?

The Greek Tourist Board has set up a website and is appealing to social-media-savvy volunteer supporters to inspire goodwill. The interactive site – TrueGreece.org – is designed to share positive travel experiences and help downplay any negativity.

Not everyone is impressed. Josephides said: "In the best of times, no action is taken quickly. When the minister (of tourism) came to the UK in February, we met and said that Greece had to go on the offensive because there is so much bad publicity.

"It is too little, too late – but we have got to help regenerate tourism. We are linked to Greece and our fortunes are tied."

He has contributed 20 airline seats to send "ambassadors" to Greece to spread the goodwill message. More co-operation from other private sector partners is being sought. Expect sightings of several minor celebrities eager to travel and help the cause this summer.

One positive start would be for the Greek National Tourist Office in the UK to use social media itself: its Twitter account has not updated since 20 October last year.

What about the currency?

It is nearly four years since the pound bought you so much in the eurozone. It's now around €1.25 to £1 and, on current trend, will appreciate slightly more before the school holidays.

Thomas Cook suggests that when changing sterling for euros, you ask for smaller denominations: €5, €10 and €20 notes. This is because, should Greece pull out of the euro – which seems unlikely in the short term – the interim currency will be existing euro notes with a corner clipped, which will be worth 30-40% less. The thinking is that you will lose more on a transaction with a €50 or higher note.

But do pack a credit or debit card – and a prepaid euro debit card, which incurs no charge at an ATM and is widely accepted by retailers. For more advice visit guardian.co.uk/money.

Should I take cash?

Some retail outlets and cafes are already asking for cash rather than accepting cards. Sir David Miers, a former British ambassador to Greece, who recently returned from a trip to Corfu, said: "There is a fear among Corfiots of what will happen if Greece has to revert to the drachma. ATMs might cease to operate while there is uncertainty about the currency. The tendency for people to want settlement in cash rather than by credit card might increase. But for tourists who have plenty of hard currency in their wallets, that should not be a problem."

Dana Facaros, author of the Cadogan Guide to the Greek Islands, warned: "It is not a problem (yet) on the big islands such as Corfu, but I can imagine you might get caught out on a small island, especially one with only one or two ATMs. Greece isn't having a bank run, more of a slow motion bank walk."

Journalist Sean O'Hagan, who was in the region last week, said: "We found ATMs that didn't have any money, and other holidaymakers told us of restaurants and cafes that were just accepting cash."

What sort of holiday should I book to be helpful?

Greece needs you this summer: one in five of the working population is employed in tourism, and the money the industry brings in accounts for 17% of GDP. There are two ways to look at this: book your own hotel or B&B direct and the money stays in Greece. But you still have to buy your flight and that money doesn't, unless you choose to fly Olympic or Aegean Airways.

Or you can buy a package. They are undeniably cheap. Olympic Holidays has just cut prices, by 25%, for the first half of July. Buy from an international operator such as Tui, which sells into its own hotels, and little money will stay in Greece.

If you buy from a tour firm that specialises in Greece, a lot more will go into the local economy, as has happened for years. Sailing Holidays has been operating for 25 years and runs 178 boats around the Greek islands; Sunvil has been supporting Greek holidays since 1970. Both they and other specialists, such as Ionian Island Holidays, will always continue to support hoteliers – it's their business, but also a lifelong passion.

Barrie Neilson of Sailing Holidays said: "I've had hoteliers saying we're saving their homes this year. We support the little guys."

These firms are also Atol-bonded, and will guarantee your holiday should things go awry with the euro, with either a refund or an alternative holiday. If you travel independently, the risk is yours.

Personally? I'd go for a flight to Athens (currently around £200 on easyJet) and a ferry from Piraeus. Then, in an old-fashioned way, book a room from the gaggle of apartment owners who will meet the boat in the harbour. There are lots of stories this summer of rooms for under £40 a night. If that's a bit too risky for you, book independent accommodation before you go (see below).

Which areas would benefit the most from tourism?

There is an argument that northern Greece will benefit most. In February 2011, international rail services to Greece were halted to save money, cutting off routes from Turkey, Bulgaria and Serbia. It means the second city of Salonika and the region around Mount Olympus are cut off from tourism as few head north of Athens.

Greek travel blogger John Malathronas says: "Those islands with airports such as Corfu, Crete or Mykonos will always be fine: they will always have tourists. But the north and the smaller islands will suffer this summer."

Some islands are being boosted by an influx of Russians and Ukranians, while Santorini and Corfu – traditional high-value holiday spots for Britons – are also still selling well, particularly pricey luxurious villas. Added Malathronas: "A friend in Santorini tells me the island is busy – and this year is also seeing a lot of Chinese visitors coming in off the cruise ships."

So go for smaller, barely known islands which are more likely to be struggling.

Greek Sun Holidays (01732 740317, greeksun.co.uk) has been going since the 1960s, and provides a broad range of tailormade trips and island-hopping holidays to lesser-known islands (Amorgos, Schinoussa, Folegandros, Lipsi, Fourni, and more).

For holidays to family-run properties, try Hidden Greece (020-8758 4707, hidden-greece.co.uk), which offers a large range of islands, including newly launched Astypalea and Pserimos in the Dodecanese, sandy with a population outnumbered by goats – the company was once told by the Greek Tourist Office that they had never heard of some of the isalnds they offered, including this one! .

If you can't be bothered with the hassle of arranging it yourself, Island Wandering (islandwandering.com/) specialises in island-hopping holidays for adventurous independent travellers, covering 68 islands.

How should I travel independently?

To book directly with owners, try the websites below. (Many properties had hardly any bookings all summer, indeed all year, so you could negotiate a discount, if your conscience allows.)

Holiday-rentals.co.uk has thousands of places to stay in Greece, lots of apartments and bargain properties. It currently has apartments sleeping four for around £550 a week in Crete, a house sleeping 10 in Anavissos, and a beach resort near Athens for €1,050 a week available all of July and August, and a self-contained villa with pool in Almirida, near Chania, west Crete with mountain and sea views at , available all summer and autumn from £880-1,330 per week sleeping nine.

Holidaylettings.co.uk had 179 places sleeping between four and six available for the week 3-10 August, such as a house on Lefkas with a pool sleeping six, available all year, from £1,217 a week.

You could also try villarenters.com, which has a late-deals section including a stone house on Samos (ref 77128) for £330 sleeping five departing 30 June; and dreamvillarentals.com which has slightly smarter places. The Spirit of Greece (01372 749579, spiritofgreece.co.uk) has a special offers page with last-minute availability, including its "most popular" villa, Villa Danai on Paxos, with three bedrooms, sea views and a pool for £750 for a week from 2 July.

Houses of Pelion (pelion.co.uk) has charming places to stay on the unspoilt mainland Pelion peninsula, from around £200-400pp in summer.

For a deal with flights included, Meon Villas focuses on popular destinations such as Corfu, Lefkas, Crete and Cephalonia. Its late-deals section meonvillas.co.uk/offers/promo1 includes Stefanos, a villa with pool in Aghios Stefanos, Corfu, sleeping six for £393pp departing 16 July, or £654pp including flights, including flights from Gatwick.

To cut straight to the most gorgeous accommodation visit i-escape.com. It has 67 places in Greece, from boutique hotels to stylish self-catering villas.

To find a cheap and cheerful B&B, try bedandbreakfast.com/greece, which maps several in popular areas, from around £20 a night.

You're less likely to find deals on flights: July and August are expensive as usual. As an example, easyJet flights from Luton to Corfu cost around £260 return, flying weekend to weekend at the end of July; in July and August the lowest return fares were around £150pp. For the same dates Luton to Crete it was around £300, or cheapest returns £170-180 in July and August. From Manchester to Crete it was about the same, or from around £140 in July, for flexible departure days.

Cheapflights.com said it had seen a rise in searches for flights to Athens this week , 16% up on the previous week, and has summer flights from around £158 return from the UK.

What if I want to book a package or find a deal?

Going with a specialist tour operator who has worked with local Greek businesses for years is a more ethical option than a major operator who is more profit-driven and possibly exploitative of people desperate to fill rooms. Plus many have access to airfares and room rates not available to individual travellers, and you get the peace of mind of financial protection.

Start at aito.com, which includes 40 Greek holiday specialists as well as accommodation including villas with pool to B&Bs, apartments and rooms above tavernas. Also look at Sunvil Holidays (020-8568 4499,sunvil.co.uk); GIC The Villa Collection (020-8232 9780,gicthevillacollection.com); and Sailing Holidays (020-8459 8787, sailingholidays.com). Ionian and Aegean Island Holidays (020-8459 0777, ionianislandholidays.com) is pushing late deals, with up to 40% off self-catering holidays. Departing on 6 July, seven nights on Skopelos at Metochi Villa with private pool, three bedrooms, flights from Gatwick or Manchester, transfers, car hire and welcome hamper costs £587pp (£392pp off).

I've booked but I'm not sure. Can I cancel?

No. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has no warnings on its website about travel, so if you've booked, there is no legal reason for an operator to give you a refund. If worried, book through an Atol-backed tour operator so that if trouble breaks out, you will be evacuated. If trouble breaks out before travel and the FCO changes its travel advice, then you will be offered a refund or alternative holiday.

How can I travel there more ethically?

Eat out nightly, make sure any produce you buy is grown in Greece, not imported, enjoy a drink or two, explore the shops and buy local crafts. Travel around and try different places to spread your money.

A new website, launched last month, encourages visitors to explore Athens with a local. Dopios.com, which means local in Greek, lists 47 residents of Athens who will guide you around, from eating to walks to nightlife – even on the back of a motorbike. The residents charge for the tour. For example, Lila Tzamousi offers an all-day guided group trip to the island of Aegina for £40 a head: after the cost of the boat and food, she makes around £7. Tzamousi said: "Despite the situation, we never lose the fun and our sense of hospitality."

How do I learn about the Greek economic crisis first hand?

If you don't want to just lie on the beach pretending everything's OK and would rather get to the bottom of what's up with Greece, turn to Political Tours (0843 289 2349, politicaltours.com/tours/greece-the-euro), which offers trips that allow travellers to experience current affairs first-hand.

Among its programme, which also includes expert-led trips to North Korea, Libya, Northern Ireland, Kosovo and London's own City, is a one-off trip in August, which examines the Greek sovereign debt crisis and asks what next for the eurozone, through talks by leading analysts, NGOs, local leaders and ordinary people, on the island of Samos and in Athens. Visits include Syntagma Square, where demonstrators massed, Ermou Street where it was once impossible to find a shop to rent but now many stand vacant, Perama shipyard, once a vital engine of the Greek economy and Corinth, a farming area, as in the past two years tens of thousands of Greeks have chosen to become farmers. The trip runs 25 August–2 September and costs £2,750 (single supplement £250), excluding flights.

People will tell you that the Greek islands are not what they were, but they've been saying that for a long time. In 1878, Edward Lear complained bitterly that Paleokastritsa in Corfu had been overrun by badly behaved English tourists, and Odysseus probably disapproved of all the new villas put up in his absence by the suitors. There are more than 150 inhabited Greek islands and fewer than 30 ever get seriously overcrowded. (Has anyone ever been to Agios Efstratos?) Even the busiest islands have places where you can escape the crowds, and sometimes the crowds can be fun. Here's a selection in no particular order, some well known, some not.

1. Best neoclassical harbour: Symi

The ferry from Rhodes shuts down its engine and glides into the long, narrow harbour with houses rising all around like a Greek amphitheatre. No matter how often you do it, whatever the time of day or night, you suddenly realise that you couldn't be in any other country in the world and, for a moment, you can imagine that classical Greece never came to a end and you have arrived in the middle of it.

2. Best for parties: Mykonos

For a couple of hours, the evening sun turns the island's dull brown rock to fool's gold. The narrow streets between the white cubist houses are full of people, from a distance all young, all beautiful, all impossibly fashionable. But that too is a trick of the light. When you look closely, you realise they are just the same people you stand next to every morning on the Tube, miraculously transformed for a fortnight a year. And they probably think the same about you.

3. Best view: Santorini

The ancient island of Thira exploded in 1500BC, leaving a broken rim of a now-extinct volcano. The town of Fira sits on the top of the rim looking west, with an almost sheer drop of 250m to a very deep blue sea whose bed rapidly plummets to a depth of 350m. This is where almost every Greek postcard is shot, and with good reason. The air is pretty special too, and it's just about the only other thing on the island that doesn't cost a fortune.

4. Best for food: Anywhere and nowhere

Greek is not one of the world's great cuisines, but you should be able to find good fresh food simply cooked — fish caught that morning, or one of the island's goats marinated in local olive oil and herbs from the hills then grilled over an open fire. Don't eat anywhere where you're not encouraged to go into the kitchen to see what they're cooking, stick to the day's specials and never eat anything that's been in a microwave.

You may or may not like retsina — again, it's a matter of where you drink it: what wouldn't taste good at home can be very different in a taverna on a beach — and the unresinated wine can be a bit thin. Some Greek winemakers plant cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, and the result is a characterless imitation of French or Australian wine. But if you look hard you can find wine made from traditional grape varieties that is exceptional by any standards. The Icarus brand made by Nikos Afianes on Icaria regularly wins international awards, and quite right too.

The best spirit is Cretan raki, Greek brandy is rough but drinkable, ouzo is best avoided and the Corfiots make a kumquat-flavoured liqueur which is truly vile.

5. Best uninhabited island: Farmakonisi

When Julius Caesar was a youth, he was kidnapped by pirates and held hostage here for a year. This was not a good move. He was particularly incensed by the small ransom demanded, insisting that his family paid double the asking price for his release, and when he became a general he crucified the entire population of the island. It never really recovered. No ferries stop, but you should be able to hitch a lift on a yacht from nearby Arki or Gaidaros. Take your own supplies.

6. Best for wildlife: Tilos

Early in the last century, a travelling circus was shipwrecked off the uninhabited west coast of Tilos. A pair of tigers managed to swim ashore and thrived on a diet of mountain goat; their descendants can still be found if you know where to look … actually, this story is complete bollocks and originated about five years ago in Sophia's taverna in Livardia. But the island did once have a unique population of pygmy elephants (true) and you can still see more species of birds year-round than on any other island in the Mediterranean (probably).

7. Best classical site: Nas, Icaria

Delos, Knossos et al are, of course, awesome, but crowded. At Nas, you can have the place to yourself, largely because the temple was unfortunately knocked down in 1857 and not a lot remains. But the Ancient Greeks built temples in magical places, and sitting on the foundations of the Artemision watching the sun set in the bay you get a real sense of the magic that inspired them. And you can spend an enjoyable time discovering many of the marble stones in the church tower up the hill at Christos Raches, in the stepping stone bridge in the stream behind Nas beach and lying on the sea bed in the bay.

You can stay in the actual house in Kalami where Lawrence Durrell wrote Prospero's Cell. Read that, his brother Gerald's My Family and Other Animals, Henry Miller's The Colossus of Marousi and the Miller-Durrell letters and try to piece together what really happened. They were all written about the same places and often the same people but telling completely different and often contradictory stories.

10. Best undiscovered island: Gavdos

The southernmost island in Europe is what most Greek islands were like 40 years ago. You are welcome to sleep on the beach (increasingly frowned upon elsewhere) and two of the beaches, Agios Ioannis and Potamos, would be contenders for the best in the Mediterranean. The island has a permanent Greek population of fewer than 40 and attracts a small but growing number of artists and drop outs from the rest of Europe. It isn't easy to get to and, if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, impossible to leave. If you ever wanted to lounge in a taverna and text the office — "Nope, I won't be in this week either. The ferry still isn't landing" — this is the place. I'll be there in June and I haven't looked forward to going somewhere so much for years.

Thessaloniki Greece

Thessaloniki (520 km. north of Athens) is the second largest city of Greece and the most important centre of the area. Built near the sea (at the back of the Thermaïkos Gulf), it is a modern metropolis bearing the marks of its stormy history and its cosmopolitancharacter, which give it a special beauty and charm.

Take a tour in the centre of Thessaloniki and plan to visit its nearby destinations. Also, while being in Thessaloniki it is worth going up to Halkidiki.

Visit Thessaloniki's Archaeological sites

-The ancient forum (dated to the late 2^nd or the early 3^rd century AD) with squares, porticoes, additional buildings and odeum (293-395 AD), the palace complex of Galerius Maximianus (4th c. AD), the thermae, the hippodrome, the temples and other monuments and moveable finds (among them mosaics of exquisite art) brought to light in excavations and surveys. In the south square, is the famous Stoa of the Idols, which was two-storeyed and lavishly decorated.

-The Triumphal Arch of Galerius (Kamara), built in AD 305 to commemorate his military successes in general in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.

-The Rotunda is an early 4^th century building which later was converted into a Christian church.

Visit Thessaloniki's Byzantine monuments

Thessaloniki, with its host of Byzantine monuments (due to it’s significance during the Byzantine period), justifiably is considered an open-air museum of Byzantine art. Wandering through the city, it is worthwhile to see:

-The churches of Acheiropoietos (5^th century) a three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica, the Holy Wisdom of God (Hagia Sophia) (7^th century), the Panaghia (Virgin) Chalkeon (1028), Hosios David (12^th century), St Panteleemon (late 13^th or the early 14^th century), is of four-columned cross-in-square type, Ayioi Apostoloi (1310-1314),Taxiarches (14^th century), Panagouda a three-aisled basilica with significant icons, Agios Ioannis Prodromos (Nymphaion),Vlatadon monastery a 14^th century foundation of which only the katholikon and two cisterns within the precinct survive, Ayios Demetrios a splendid basilica dedicated to the patron saint and protector of the city, etc.

-The byzantine walls of the city

-The archaeological site in 3 Septemvriou St., with remnants of a cemetery basilica, a martyrion and Early Christian graves.

-The byzantine bathhouse (late thirteenth century).

-The Heptapyrgion castle was raised in stages, from the early years of the Byzantine Age into the Ottoman period.

Amazing Ottoman monuments

-The White Tower (15^th century), the hallmark of the city.

-The Mosques of the Hamza Bey Cami (15^th century), the Aladja Imaret Cami (1484) and the Yeni Cami (1902).

-Hamams (turkish bathhouses): The Pazar Hamam (15^th century), the Pasha Hamam (15^th century), Bey Hamam (16^th century), Yeni Hamam and the Yahudi Hamam.

-Bezesteni, a rectangular building with lead-covered domes and four entraces was built in the late fifteenth century and operated as a cloth market.

Discover neighbourhoods and focal points in the city

-The Old City (Ano Polis), in which many notable examples of Ottoman and traditional Macedonian architecture still stand, alongside humble dwellings put up by the refugees who reached Thessaloniki in droves, after the Greek defeat in Asia Minor, in 1922.

-The historical quarter of the Ladadika. In recent years, a series of interventions to rehabilitate the urban fabric have helped to enhance the Ladadika as a quarter for leisure pursuits.

-The traditional markets: the Modiano, which is housed in a rectangular building of 1922, with pedimented facade and glass roof; the Kapani or Vlalis market; Athonos Square and the ‘Louloudadika’ (literally flower market).

-Vasilissis Olgas Avenue, lined with many representative Neoclassical buildings and examples of late 19^thcentury eclectic architecture.

-The central Aristotelous Square, surrounded by monumental buildings and open to the waterfront for a width of 100 metres.

Other monuments and buildings in the city:

-Mylos (literally mill). An old industrial complex, built in 1924, today have been remodelled to house cultural events and leisure activities, as well as the industrial buildings of the old FIX Brewery and the VILKA plant.

-Lazarist monastery (1886) by the monastic order of the Brothers of Mercy, and now used for cultural events.

-Royal Theatre

-Thessaloniki Concert Hall. A newly-built, magnificent yet austere, multipurpose venue for cultural and other events.

-YMCA Building, a building of 1924, with a mixture of Neocolonial and Byzantesque architectural elements.

It’s worth seeing the Archaelogical Museum, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Folk and Ethnographic Museum, the State Museum of Contemporary Art, the Teloglion Foundation of Art, the Thessaloniki Cinema Museum, the Thessaloniki Science Center and Technology Museum, et. al.Festivities
