 Proven hands-on experience in microbial DNA extraction from challenging clinical samples (specifically stool/fecal matrices).

 Demonstrated experience in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, or Ion Torrent platforms) and quality control assessment (e.g., Qubit, Bioanalyzer/TapeStation).

 Familiarity with maintaining strict molecular biology laboratory logs, safety protocols, and sample inventory.

 Experience in microbiology techniques, handling of anaerobic bacteria and experience in characterization of probiotic strains will be added advantage. OR

 Strong proficiency in command-line environments (Linux/Unix bash scripting) and programming languages commonly used in data science (Python and R).

 Experience running standard metagenomic pipelines for taxonomic classification (e.g., Kraken2, MetaPhlAn) and functional annotation (e.g., HUMAN, Prokka).

 Experience handling large-scale biological datasets, data visualization (ggplot2), and applying statistical methods to analyze microbial diversity (alpha/beta diversity shifts between treatment groups).

To develop strengths in focused areas, research at BRIC-inStem is driven through collaborative interdisciplinary teams, addressing questions that are beyond the scope of a single laboratory. We are looking for dedicated professionals with a background in cellular and molecular biology with basic computational and statistical skills. Individuals with experience with mouse handling and mammalian cell culture would be prioritized although this is not a pre-requisite for the position. Project Associate-I

Project Associates will be expected to contribute to ongoing projects in the lab, test/optimize new techniques and keep records of data and lab materials.

Tenure: Contractual appointment for 11 Eleven months, renewable based on requirement and review of progress and requirement of the Grant.

The project is offered by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

3. Essential Qualification: M.Sc. (in Biological Sciences) Degree with minimum 75% marks, along with NET or GATE qualification. Role Summary We are looking for a Junior Bioinformatician with experience in clinical genomics, particularly whole exome sequencing analysis and clinical report generation. The candidate will be responsible for processing NGS data, performing variant annotation and prioritization, supporting clinical interpretation, and preparing structured molecular diagnostic reports under supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Whole Exome Sequencing Analysis

Process raw FASTQ files through standard WES pipelines.

Perform quality control, trimming, alignment, BAM processing, variant calling and annotation.

Work with tools such as FastQC, MultiQC, BWA, SAMtools, GATK, bcftools, VEP/ANNOVAR/SnpEff, ClinVar, gnomAD and related databases.

Analyze SNVs, indels and, where applicable, CNVs from exome data.

Variant Interpretation and Prioritization

Prioritize clinically relevant variants based on phenotype, inheritance pattern, population frequency, predicted impact and published evidence.

Use databases such as OMIM, ClinVar, HGMD, gnomAD, Varsome, Franklin, LOVD and PubMed.

Support ACMG/AMP-based variant classification.

Clinical Report Preparation

Prepare draft clinical reports for WES, targeted panels and other NGS-based assays.

Maintain consistency, accuracy and traceability in reporting.

Assist in preparing negative, VUS, carrier and positive reports.

Data Management and Documentation

Maintain sample-wise analysis folders, logs, QC metrics and final result files.

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata, an Institute of National Importance, was established by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India in the year 2006. The basic mandate of the IISERs is to provide quality science education and to conduct research in basic and frontier areas of science, involving both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

IISER Kolkata invites applications from Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (Foreign Nationals for a fixed period on contract basis) to fill-up FACULTY positions at the level of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Gr.I(for all departments), ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Gr.II (for CDS, DES & HSS), for the thrust areas and specific credentials required is given below against each department. The Institute is seeking outstanding, young, energetic early-career researchers who combine impactful science with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. Successful candidates will have a strong publication record, a clear independent research vision, and a plan to contribute to excellence across our BS–MS, MS, Integrated PhD, and PhD programs and demonstrate capability to attract sponsored research project. Teaching: Basic and Advanced Courses in addition to other core teaching responsibilities. Active participation in departmental and Institute activities is expected. Demonstrating the ability to generate ideas with potential commercial value or any previous industry experience, including but not limited to working with industry during a PhD or Postdoc, or an Industrial postdoctoral research, may offer an added advantage.

Biological Sciences (DBS)

1. Chemical Biology

Research areas

• Precision medicine and discoveries; Structural Biology, AI/ML algorithms for drug targets and therapeutics • Cancer Biology; Stem cell therapeutics and regenerative medicine

• Imaging & Probes: Development and application of chemical probes for bioimaging and other applications

Specific credentials required Ph.D. in Chemical Biology, Master's in Chemistry or Biochemistry; Minimum three years postdoctoral research in Chemical Biology, including published papers in Q1 journals.

2. Bioinformatics

Research areas

• Bioinformatics and computational biology methods related to biological systems • Microbial bioinformatics, Systems Biology, and AI. • Omics: genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics related to personalized medicine and diagnostics

Specific credentials required Must hold a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics. and an M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences or Computer Science. A minimum of three years of dedicated postdoctoral research experience in the relevant field of Bioinformatics, including published papers in Q1 journals.

3. Physiology and Biochemistry

Research areas: metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, or hepatic disease, cancer biology; immunology;

Specific credentials required Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Master's in Physiology or Biochemistry. A minimum of three years of dedicated postdoctoral research experience in the relevant field, including published papers in Q1 journals.

4. Microbial Genetics

Research areas: Anti-microbial resistance (AMR); Pathogenicity and infectious diseases; Food microbiology, microbial genetics and microbial physiology

Specific credentials required PhD in Microbiology or Biological Sciences, Masters in Microbiology; including published papers in Q1 journals.

5. Developmental Biology

Research areas:

genetic and epigenetic regulation of embryogenesis and organogenesis, reprogramming, and stem cell biology across diverse model organisms and plants, including published papers in Q1 journals.

Specific credentials required PhD in Developmental Biology; Masters in Biological Sciences

6. Biotechnology

Research Areas:

Gene editing, Molecular Biology, recombinant DNA technology for vaccines and regenerative medicine, tissue and cell engineering, genome diagnostics

Specific credentials required Must hold a Master's and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or Biological engineering, including PhD and Postdoctoral expertise in research areas mentioned above, including published papers in Q1 journals.

7. Evolutionary biology

Research areas:

Molecular and quantitative approaches to address important topics in evolutionary biology using modern tools such as sequencing, AI, imaging, mass spectrometry, tomography, etc.

Specific credentials required PhD in Evolutionary Biology and must hold a Master's in Biological Sciences, including published papers in Q1 journals.
