LITTLE ROCK: Please Help! Proposed SOAR Network Outreach and Support Center in Jeopardy

Due to an orchastrated campaign of lies and misrepresentations, the proposed SOAR Network Outreach and Support Center is now in jeopardy.

People in the neighborhood have been told that:

-we are opening a shelter
-that we are going to be a day resource center
-that we are going to be an intake center for homeless
-and lots more None of this is true!!

Here are the facts:

The Outreach and Support Center will be a development and coordination hub for the SOAR Network model ALL direct services to the homeless will be provided where they are; in camps, on the streets, or in participating agencies and churches. The only people that will be in the building will be those working, either as volunteers or paid staff, to develop and support the operations of the network, or agencies and volunteers participating in the SOAR Network Action Group meetings and/or training. Specific Activities that will be coordinated out of the building are:

Homeless Help Line where volunteers and staff will answer calls from homeless and those working with the homeless to provide information, connections to services and supports, or assigning them to an outreach and support team. Staff and volunteer support to SOAR Network Action Groups. Coordination of outreach and support teams throughout Central Arkansas. Technology center to develop and support Internet and intranet solutions for assisting participating network members in communication, coordination, decision making, and data sharing. Transportation scheduling and coodination Meetings and Training Storage and distribution of food, clothing, blankets, furniture and other items for homeless in camps or on the street and those moving into their own house or apartment. What You Can Do!

There are two upcoming meetings that will decide our fate. The first is tomorrow Tuesday February 22 @ the Capital Zoning Commission offices located @ 410 S. Battery. From 7th Street turn north on Battery and go to the end of the street. Commission is a house on the left.

The Second is a special session of the full Commission to review our application. It will be Thursday March 10 @ 5:30 pm.

We have set up an online petition you can sign and get others to sign in support of us. We especially need those in the downtown area. CLICK HERE to ACCESS the PETITION.

We are also organizing teams to go door to door between now and March 10th to explain what we will be doing and enlist support of the people in the neighborhood. If you are willing to help with this, call Dennis @ 310-1826

LITTLE ROCK: Network Again Mobilizing to Open Hospitality Center for Homeless Due to Weather

A network of churches, agencies, and volunteers are again mobilizing to open a Hospitality Center in the Canvas Community Church located at 1111 W. 7th St.

Plans are to open by Tuesday afternoon and remain open through Friday night.

Much is needed to make this a success. Do what you can to spread the word and help meet the following needs:

Volunteers to assist in the facility and to assist with transportation needs

Meals or food for meals

Wednesday lunch, and dinner

Thursday lunch

Friday lunch, and dinner

Donations to assist with special needs of visitors: bus tokens or passes, bus tickets, id cards, medicine, etc.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS: Tomorrow is the HUD Homeless Count, Can You Help?

The HUD annual homeless count is scheduled for tomorrow, January 25th. Area agencies and volunteers will be counting all homeless in Central Arkansas that are residing in shelters and those that are on the streets and in camps.

Volunteers will set up at locations in various parts of town beginning at 7:30 to count the homeless in those areas. They will also be passing out bags containing food, hygiene products, blankets, clothing and other items.

Other volunteers will be visiting camps and other locations where homeless reside.

LITTLE ROCK: Here's a Way for ANYBODY to Make a Huge Difference for Our Homeless Neighbors

Good Morning to All –

I have just talked with Sheri Bentley (her husband, Jamey, is the Senior Pastor at Canvas Community Church). They have asked for our help in coordinating the meals for the temporary shelter they opened yesterday due to the cold weather.

They have been consistently feeding 60 people at each of their meals. Here are the meals that we are looking for different groups to claim and be responsible for covering for us:

· Saturday, January 22 Dinner
· Sunday, January 23 Breakfast
· Sunday, January 23 Lunch
· Sunday, January 23 Dinner
· Monday, January 24 Breakfast
· Monday, January 24 Lunch
· Monday, January 24 Dinner
· Tuesday, January 25 Breakfast

Plans are to close the shelter after breakfast on Tuesday Morning.

If you are willing to claim one of these meals and be responsible for providing this meal, will you drop me a note upon the receipt of this message and let me know which one?

I’m thankful for the wonderful work that Canvas Community Church is doing in serving those who find themselves homeless. Helping with the coordination of these meals is one small way that I can be of help to them.

One-by-One! A Plea for Little Rock's Homeless

Good Morning my friend –

With the prospects of warming weather coming, likely the emergency shelter at Canvas Community Church’s will close their temporary shelter very soon. Our thanks again to Pastor Jamey Bentley and the wonderful people that have come alongside of him to make this happen!

As we mentioned last Sunday at the beginning of this effort, this might very well be the opportunity while many of these individuals are there in the shelter to have different church communities consider coming and meeting many of these individuals and identifying one that they would be willing to take under their wing for 90-days and really get to know them and help “lift” and support them as the rise above such.

With the goal of eradicating homelessness in our city, let’s set our goal toward building relationships with these individuals and helping to provide them hope, a support system, and a path to come off the streets. One by one we can do this! Actually, this is the only way it will happen – one at a time as we step out in faith!

If you haven’t already done so, would you consider going to Canvas Community Church sometime today and consider “adopting” one of these individuals and help create for them something some of them have never had in their lifetime and give them a “second chance”?

The Need For Coats is Overwhelming! We Need Your Help!!

As I do every year about this time, I'm begging for coats. Over the last several years I've seen more and more need for coats but this year has absolutely shocked me as the obvious need for children's coats continues to mound.

Right now the biggest need is for children's coats, boys and girls, all sizes. The number of elementary schools calling about their kids not having access to a warm coat is astounding.

Next, we seriously need men's coats, size large and up. We are turning these around as quickly as we can get them in and the list of people who are waiting for one keeps growing.

Please give what you can. Almost everyone I know has a coat stashed in the back of their closet that they know they'll never wear again.

You can also help us with providing funds for fuel to collect, and distribute these coats. This cost is a constant barrier. You all are amazing and I hope you will take a few minutes to help!

LOOK: Look for the red and yellow Miracle Balloon at retail locations like Walmart and Costco and make a donation to your local Children’s Miracle Network hospital.

An Update From the Arkansas Dream Center!

May 8, 2010 Adopt A Block

Everytime we go out to work in a person's yard it opens up a door. We get the opportunity to spend quality time talking with another person in the community. We get to hear about thier kids, their spouse, even their friends. That is what makes us so different to these people. Those people they talk to us about aren't out their serving them, their friends aren't serving them, their kids aren't their serving them. They are all too busy to stop and lend a hand. So they ask the question of why are these complete strangers their to help, and that is when the light bulb goes off. That is the moment when the seed is sown for a changed life.

So once again we will be out in the community cleaning up yards for the weekend of May 8, 2010, so bring your lawn tools and meet us at the GLR campus at 9am to head downtown and bless families.

Homeless Outreach Thursday, May 6, 2010

We will be going out to handout sleeping mats this week to the homeless of Little Rock.

The Sleeping Matters Life Group are also starting a new program to be able to hand out toiletry items and are looking for people who like to sew. They are also looking for people to donate small travel size toiletries and your old towels.

Project Prevention Launch Meeting Tuesday May 11, 2010

Project Prevention is our newest ministry of the ARDC and here is brief synopsis.

It is our belief that no child should be taken away from loving parents or grandparents because of poverty. Our goal is to work with counselors and social workers to get referrals of good parents whom we can help make life-long changes and literally change the destiny of their children.

We also desire to help recruit people that are interested in becoming foster parents and network with other organizations to make sure that no child goes to bed without being in a loving home.

A single bed, a few articles of clothing, or a bag of groceries are sometimes all that is needed to keep these families intact. Most importantly, we desire to build relationships with these families.

The meeting will take place at the Home of Drew & Kristi Davis. Their address is 45 Ranch Ridge Road in the Ranch area near Arkansas Baptist High School. Dessert and Coffee will be served. The following is a message from Jeff Spry of City Connections, Inc.:

On this beautiful cool spring morning, I want to say thank you to all of you who have responded positively with your notes and pledges of support following my plea this past Sunday morning for help with covering the materials cost and some of the necessary professional, licensed craftsmen we have to have to pull permits and handle different tasks as a part of this build-out!

We’re in the final stages of building out the new clinic, “Esperanza- Hope: A Neighborhood Health Center” at Second Baptist Church and hopefully later this week will complete the painting of the clinic. Last week we received our first invoice from the general contractor who is over-seeing this project and helping us keep it on track and moving forward. As we shared in our message on Sunday, we are asking everyone in our network to prayerfully consider helping us with a $100-200 donation to cover this first wave of expenses that we’ve incurred:

Howdy folks.

I'll be quick and to the point: we need stuff. The SOAR Network and the agencies, churches, businesses, and individuals we represent are consistently moving people off the street and into housing. So, we need anything and everything.

Examples: (used or new) furniture, dishes, appliances, etc.

Also, we need some of all of the above for our newest shelter. This transitional style shelter will house 8 men. Our current shelter will be turned into a women's facility.

Verizon Wireless and other top employers are attending our job fair. These companies are actually recruiting, reviewing resumes, providing job applications and scheduling interviews. At our job fairs we focus on QUALITY and on companies with current job openings. You will meet face to face with decision makers.

We encourage you to register in advance so that companies can view your resume prior to the job fair. This is an option, not a must. To attend simply show up at the job fair and bring copies of your resume. Feel free to bring any friends, relatives or anyone that may be in need of a career or job opportunity.

UA Design/Build Home Leaves Fayetteville; Headed for New Site in Little Rock’s Historic Pettaway Neighborhood

WHAT: Transport and installation of the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture’s Design/Build House, built by students under the direction of Associate Professor Michael Hughes

WHEN: Thursday, April 8, 2010, estimated time of arrival 11:00 a.m., with installation to begin upon arrival

WHERE: 1519 S. Commerce St., downtown Little Rock

BACKGROUND: The sustainable modular home designed and constructed by 4th and 5th year architecture students in Fayetteville is being loaded onto trucks and transported in pieces to Little Rock for installation in their new home in the historic Pettaway neighborhood in downtown Little Rock. The home is the first of several Design/Build projects planned by the University of Arkansas’ Fay Jones School of Architecture, under the direction of Associate Professor Michael Hughes. The project is a joint venture between the University and the Downtown Little Rock Community Development Corporation, an organization working to improve the quality of life for people living in downtown Little Rock. Financing for the project was made possible through Centennial Bank.

The home, to be located at 1519 S. Commerce St., was constructed in modules at a warehouse in Fayetteville. The students have been traveling between Fayetteville and Little Rock for the past several months to prepare the site, and have done all of the labor on the project. The home is part of a collaborative effort to revitalize the South Main neighborhood, and showcases materials and construction alternatives for affordable, energy-efficient and sustainable housing in inner-city Little Rock.
