There are a lot old Walt Disney movies where the dog catcher is the most evil guy in the movie," says David Lytle, the organization's public affairs manager.

The Oregon Humane Society has flashing signs and flags in front of its light, airy, welcoming building. Many of the cats live in colony rooms decorated like rooms in a home, including one with a jukebox and a picture of Elvis on the wall. The organization is even bringing in interior designers who will give advice, free of charge, about color schemes in the dog runs to help make black and brown dogs "pop" to the eye.

An upbeat message

The humane society's goal is to turn thinking about homeless pets from something sad and overwhelming to something uplifting, even fun.

Sparked socially!

Those of you that read my blog know that I sometimes review products, and post about products and services that I think may interest my readers. We do this to earn a few bucks to keep our blog going!

The service that we use is called SocialSpark - they help facilitate transactions between advertisers and bloggers, so that bloggers can select an advertising opportunity, post about it and then receive the offered funds for posting about the advertiser's product or service.

The best part about SocialSpark is that it is Google friendly! Google doesn't even mind that I use SocialSpark, because it utilizes no-follow links within the post.

We noticed that in the beginning SocialSpark didn't have a lot of opportunities for us, but they are increasing every week! We'd love it if they had more pup related products for us to blog about. As a marketer, my Mum thinks it would be a great idea for dog (and cat) related companies that sell toys, all natural foods, clothing, and other related dog gear to utilize this service to help get the word out about their products and services. Especially if it fits the niche of the blog and the blog reader.

I know that my readers love it when they find out about a new product that could be very useful or fun for their pup!

But until then we hope that you don't mind that we post about some of these products and services so we can keep our blog going!

Meet Cobin!

Cobin is a 3 year old neutered male Akbash Dog. His owners were forced to move from their home and were unable to find another home with a yard, so they had to relinquish him to a local rescue group. Cobin will do best as the only dog in the home. He is very sweet with his family and children and is an excellent family guardian dog.

Cobin is a big boy, weighing 125 pounds. He is housebroken, walks on lead and knows basic commands. Cobin is a very handsome guy and is in good health. He is not an excessive barker or digger, he has good house manners.

We met Cobin currently being cared for by foster pawrents in Utah through the National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue Network in Queen Creek, Arizona. The National Anatolian Shepherd Rescue Network (NASRN) is a nationwide, 501(c)(3) recognized non-profit, organization. He is housebroken, walks well on a leash, and will sit at your feet while you work on your computer or watch TV.

He weighs less than 20 pounds (sure doesn't need any fitness equipment!) and may be about 3 or 4 years old. He has very strong feelings about crates - he doesn't like them a bit. He would love to have a fenced yard to play in. He wouldn't mind being an only child, but if he were to live with another dog it must be a sweet one. Fargo is easily bullied.

We found Fargo currently being cared for by Furry Friends Animal Rescue in Thompson Station, Tennessee. Furry Friends Animal Rescue has been operating since December of 1999. Most of the dogs they rescue come from County Animal Shelters. They have them spayed/neutered, tested for heartworms, given their vaccinations, and dewormed prior to putting them up for adoption.

For more information about Fargo, click here!

Tennessee puppy mill raid update!

Puppies from the recent puppy mill raid of 747 live animals at Pine Bluff Kennels, a dog breeding operation in Lyles, Tennessee have been transported throughout states east of the Mississippi.

Here is more information that we found...

30 puppies are now at the St. Johns County Animal Control, in St. Johns County Florida. They have been together since the ewe was a lamb.

The goat needs supervised feeding so the younger ewe doesn't steal his food. Care wise they do need feet checks/trims on a regular basis. The ewe needs shearing yearly, goat needs brushing on occasion. Investigators believe many of the dogs were not being properly cared for.

"We are looking at about 700 animals right now, maybe more will be added to that count," said Stephanie Shain, director of the Humane Society's Stop Puppy Mills campaign. "The conditions are extremely poor. They are typical of a breeding operation like this, what we call a puppy mill."

Shain said investigators saw "considerable buildup of feces in the cages." Many of the dogs did not have water. Shain said some dogs were "clearly suffering from illness or injury," such as skin conditions, eye injuries and broken bones. It's believed that many dogs were never let out of their cages.

Shain said puppy mill dogs typically are sold at prices from $150 to $1,000.

"It is likely that no one who ever purchased a puppy from this operation saw these conditions," Shain said.

Selling puppies on the Internet allows breeding operations to remain out of sight from potential buyers, Shain said. She estimated that there are more than 10,000 "puppy mills" operating in the U.S.

The rescue was set in motion by the Humane Society, which received tips from residents. Kim Helper, district attorney for Hickman, Lewis, Perry and Williamson counties, had investigators build a case against the puppy mill operator, who has not been identified or charged. Read more...

Read more information from the Humane Society of the US, help stop this horrific practice and view this video of the raid...

Meet Tibbs!

Introducing Tibbs. In a survey conducted in October, Aspen residents deemed left-behind feces their biggest complaint about living here.

“We are hoping to get good poetry and cast a fresher light on a problem that requires awareness and personal responsibility,” said Brian Long, the city parks and open space ranger.

Submissions for the contest are due early July. All types of poetry are accepted.

“We talked about just doing Haikus,” Long said. “But we thought it would be more fun to open the contest up to more types of poetry including limericks, short poems and basically everything but Homeric epics.”

Contest winners will be announced July 4; they will receive a gift certificate and will have their entries published in The Aspen Times. All entries will appear on the city of Aspen’s website.

To participate in the contest, e-mail your submission to brianlo@ci.aspen.co.us, or mail entries to the Aspen Parks Department, Attention Brian Long, 130 S. It's a daily, and sometimes twice daily thing.

Mum has a Dyson and loves it, but sometimes she'd like something smaller to do quick clean ups. So she bought a rechargeable stickvac not too long ago. It was great for a while, and then a few months after we got it, it didn't keep its charge very long and could only clean up maybe one or two rooms at the most, and it really didn't do a good job. Mum finds that really frustrating.

But, we found something today that may just fit the bill! It's called the AccuCharge 15.6 Volt Stick Vac from Dirt Devil . Not only is is cordless, but it is very energy efficient (which we love being a Green Dog and all), and reduces energy consumption by 70%. It even has the Energy Star approval. They say it has powerful suction and an onboard crevice tool for those hard to reach places.

And the best part is that the AccuCharge Technology protects the batteries from deterioration, creating a longer battery life and runtime! Something that's key with a cordless. Maybe we'll give it a try?

Meet Isabelle!

Meet Isabelle, she is a beautiful purebred Weimaraner. She is however fully crate trained. She gets along great with other dogs and cats. He’s 8 years old and weighs about 8 pounds. He likes to follow his foster parents around and play with them. When he’s not playing, he is a very mellow guy who just lounges in his bed or wherever his people are. Simba enjoys going out on walks and other outings where he can explore new areas.

He gets along with most dogs, but doesn’t seek them out for playtime. He does not like cats. He is looking for someone who will take him out on walks, play with him regularly and rub his belly. Simba will need an enclosed backyard and a doggy friend to hang out with when mom is gone would be nice.

We found Simba currently being cared for by Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Inc. in Chapmansboro, Tennessee. Qualities we are looking for in potential adoptees are kindness, compassion, gentleness, and patience. Humans must be willing to pamper, love, and spoil a rescue and must be capable of going for walkies, car rides, and giving hugs. Humans must be willing to share their homes, couches, laps, and beds.
