Maybe you don’t have access to great topical cannabis products at all – either way, making your own cannabis topicals is a reliable way to enjoy and benefit from medical marijuana. </p> <p><strong>What’s all the hype about cannabis topicals, anyhow?</strong></p> <p>Cannabis topicals provide a different way of medicating with cannabis and experiencing the soothing and pain relieving effects of cannabis while still being able to drive a car, work, and go about activities the same way you would if you had taken an aspirin. Cannabis topicals will not make you feel “high” or intoxicated. Aside from the medicinal benefits, the beauty benefits of cannabis hemp have been well known for thousands of years. Cannabis based eye creams for example are splendid for tired, puffy eyes and wrinkle minimization. </p> <p>Even in California. we have a limited selection of cannabis topical beauty products. This is why we love DIY! We are going to share our favorite tips and tricks for making cannabis topicals at home. </p> <p><strong>The Basics – Cannabis Extract</strong></p> <p>Before you start kvetching about getting together a bag of shake and somehow turning it into an extract – check and see if your local dispensary carries<a href="http://www.hempista.com/2012/the-simpson-oil-gold-mist-good-medicine-fast/"> RSO or Full Cannabis Extract as described in this review blog.</a> If you can find it you are in luck! Because THIS is exactly what you need to start with when making your own cannabis topicals. Full Cannabis Extract is a think oil that has been fully decarboxylated – this sets it apart from smokable hash oils and concentrates. Full Cannabis Extract has been heated previously to change the cannabinoids into the form which is active. Cannabinoids must be heated to activate, otherwise they cannot be used by the body. </p> <p>If you don’t have access to true Full Cannabis Extract, you can do one of two or both of these things together:</p> <p>1. Use hashish or another pure cannabis concentrate in a base of fat that is heated to 365 degrees. Make the final oil very concentrated by using 3 or more grams of hashish in 1/4 cup of coconut, olive, shea or cacao butter oils.</p> <p>2. Use 1/2 ounce of ground cannabis flowers in 1/2 cup of coconut, olive or cacao butter oils heated to 365 degrees. The final product should be extremely concentrated, although probably not as concentrated as the Full Cannabis Extract or the hash in carrier oil as described above. If you’d like to keep adding cannabis flowers and concentrating the oil further, that too will work great.</p> <p><strong>Cannabis Beauty: let’s go! </strong></p> <p>So once you have a strong, concentrated and active cannabis extract, putting together a great cannabis cosmetic box couldn’t be easier! </p> <p>For all of your eye, wrinkle, face and body creams you simply add any amount of the cannabis extract of your choice directly to your favorite product. For something that usually comes in small amounts, such as eye cream, you’ll add your cannabis extract accordingly – a small amount the size of a grain of rice or two. For larger amounts, like body lotion, you can add a teaspoon or less. </p> <p>Shampoo, hair conditioner, body wash – they all take cannabis extracts really well. Washing and beautifying with your favorite herb can be your new daily beauty ritual! We promise you’ll love the results! Just add a teaspoon or less to these products according to their size.</p> <p>Agitate, agitate, agitate… You’ll want to agitate everything very vigorously to fully dissolve your cannabis extract into the beauty product. Cannabis extracts are naturally sticky and oily hence the need for super concentration and lots of agitation when using them with your favorite beauty products. </p> <p><strong>What beauty brands work best with cannabis extracts?</strong></p> <p>Everyone is going to have their preference in this area. However, we suggest the more organic and natural ingredients in your products, the better results you will have when making a cannabis beauty product for your personal use. Humboldt County, which is a jaunt through some really big redwoods, north of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the number one cannabis growing region in the state and part of the famed “Emerald Triangle.” </p> <p>At this time, Humboldt County remains largely undeveloped in comparison to Napa County – but there are pockets of goodness like the selection of a few natural foods co-ops and a smattering of gourmet dining, usually with an organic twist. Arcata yes. Eureka, not so much. </p> <p>And a little further north at the tip of the county is a town called Trinidad that is nestled between beaches of semi-precious stones. Agates, jasper and jade cover these stone beaches like the sparkling trim on the dress of the sea goddess herself. Trinidad is where we are going to take you today with a short photo essay taken in early spring on the way to and in Trinidad and surrounding areas. what makes a great cannabis topical lotion or balm? While these aren’t the most popular product at legal medical marijuana dispensaries, the good ones sell at a brisk pace. What do we mean by good? What makes a great and not-so-great cannabis topical lotion or balm? </p> <p><strong>Let’s start with fresh, cured cannabis – potent and organic</strong></p> <p>It’s not hard to run into cannabis balms and lotions that seems to be a bit of an afterthought. Making balms and lotions out of old bags of shake and or vape tailings is not going to make a very desirable end product. No matter how much essential oil is added to the final product, you can smell old herbs. And of course, a poor quality product isn’t going to bring much relief. Balms and lotions that don’t move off of dispensary shelves for extended periods of time also decompose the vital medicinal cannabinoids. </p> <p>Here is a tip to avoid this: Look for balms and lotions with a manufacture or expiration date. Look for balm and lotion brands that move quickly off of dispensary shelves. SMELL the product before you buy it. Does it smell old, slightly cooked or off in any way? Does it look fresh; and is the packaging sufficient to keep it fresh? </p> <p><strong>I don’t want to feel like I’ve just taken a dive in a deep fryer!</strong></p> <p>Of course you don’t. That’s why when you don’t have access at your collective to great topical products, you should make your own. (A whole other topic.) </p> <p>Typically, you can expect a balm of even the best quality to be a bit heavier and more oily than a lotion. The overuse of beeswax and carrier oils can lead to clogged pores; so, avoid anything too greasy. Balms overall are probably better for nighttime use. A lotion on the other hand should never be too oily. Lotions need to absorb quickly into the skin leaving soft, happy skin. Lotions, when applied and absorbed should not stain clothing with grease spots. </p> <p>Here’s a tip on finding a great lotion: Ask your budtender if you can try the lotion on your hand before you buy. Look for heavy ingredients like beeswax and heavy use of oils like olive oil. These can be sticky and stain your clothes. </p> <p><strong>What’s THAT smell????</strong></p> <p>Cannabis topical products are a relatively new industry. Most of the balms and lotions you will find at dispensaries are homemade products. Getting the scent right, and not just the use of essential oils in an attempt to “mask” the smell of the cannabis flower or combinations that leave you smelling like the dispensary it came from, is a tricky task. The best lotions and balm products combine essential oils and extracts that compliment the cannabis flower creating an entirely new scent that is totally unique. </p> <p>Here’s a tip on finding a great scented cannabis lotion or balm product: Ask to smell it before you buy it. Ask to try it on your hand before you buy it. Give it a few minutes to meld with your body chemistry and smell your hand again. We enjoyed applying it frequently; but it really wasn’t necessary to do so! The product was fresh at purchase and the packaging holds up well to hanging out in my purse all the time. At $6 it’s priced about the same as a mainstream drug store brand for quality comparable to upscale brands priced 2-3 times as much. We say this is a must-have beauty essential!</p> <p><a href="http://hempotics.com/?products=eye-magic"></a> Eye magic smells so lovely, but as a cream for the delicate tissues around your eyes, we just weren’t feeling it! Maybe it is the beeswax in the formulation? The sticky, oily effect around my eyes was disappointing. It’s hard to formulate a cream that works well around the delicate tissues of the eye – no doubt. We’ve yet to find a cannabis cosmetic really suitable for the eye area. In our opinion,<a href="http://www.fresh.com/skincare/skincare-ancienne/creme-ancienne-eye-cream"> Fresh’s Creme Ancienne</a> is the eye cream all up-and-coming cannabis beauty products should strive to be in the world of eye cream. However, for the $20 price point not all was lost!
