This past Sunday was beautiful in Hendersonville, NC. We had just attended Grace Blue Ridge which is currently located in the Art Center building 538 North Main Street. We love being able to attend church on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville and have a wonderful lunch afterwards in one of the many restaurants found on Main Street. We decided to venture out to another part of town this time to have our Sunday dinner.

My husband and I had heard many good things about South Rock Bar and Grill and decided that we would try it out. We met our oldest son at the restaurant as he had to work at RUE 21 at the Blue Ridge Mall at 1:00, so a couple vehicles it was.

When we arrived at South Rock we immediately felt comfortable in the surroundings. It had a laid back atmosphere with plenty of televisions playing a variety of sports. The food was delicious and certainly was reasonably priced but it was the environment that was the most impressive.

It got me thinking about how many places in Hendersonville we still have not explored. I am not talking about simply places to eat, but other treasures that can be found in Hendersonville and the surrounding area. After moving here we checked out a few of the tourist events in the area, but school began and work called. We fell into a sort of rut of always heading out to the same events and the same places to eat.

The first few months we lived here we attended Music on Main faithfully. Then the next summer, there was simply too many other things to get done. I have now decided that I am going to try new activities here in Hendersonville for inspiration for writing on this blog. I figure it will be good for the blog but even better for me!

I have to find out when tail gate markets begin again as I need to taste some homegrown tomatoes and other fresh produce. I am truly looking forward to what this next season will bring to Hendersonville. I will add it to my list of dates and locations to nail down.

By the way, Main Street will be overflowing with floral and garden items this weekend! Come check it out!

From Central Iowa to Hendersonville North Carolina

In a few weeks, on June 6th our family will have been in Hendersonville for seven years. We left Des Moines, Iowa for an adventure that was going to land us in Hendersonville, North Carolina. We decided that we would pack up our belongings and move to parts unknown, none of our family lived in the area but we were bound for Western North Carolina.

The very first morning in Hendersonville we ventured down to historic main street and found a cozy little restaurant for breakfast. Our adventurous spirit led us to try grits and a few other favorites of the south. The owner was friendly and the food delicious. We felt like we arrived home.

That cozy little restaurant has changed owners several times during our seven years here in Hendersonville. There are several other shops and restaurants that have come and gone during these past few years but there are some that have been here "forever". We have made many of those restaurants our favorites since forever. We love the food and atmosphere of Carolina Diner, Hannah Flanagan, Black Rose, Mezzaluna, West 1st Pizza, Square One, Never Blue. Ok, so some of them are relatively new. They still deliver great food.

Downtown Hendersonville does a great job inviting the community to downtown for parades, Christmas carols and festivals. Crafters show off their handiwork, farmers their prize produce and meats downtown throughout the year. New terms were learned by our family such as tailgate markets and trunk or treat.

Apples are plentiful in the fall and their blossoms in the spring. A sense of community and a place of new friends from the locals and the folks who chose to live in this beautiful community.

There is so much to share and do in and around Hendersonville, North Carolina that draws families from all over including Central Iowa. I hope to share through these blog posts some of what makes Hendersonville the perfect place to live in Western North Carolina.

Hendersonville HBA and Housing Assistance Corporation are pleased to announce our continued partnering effort in an opportunity to help meet a growing need in our community to serve our elderly and other citizens with homes in need of repair, and other individual projects. Combining the experience & resources of our HBA members, associates & friends, along with the leadership and organizational skills of HAC , a Non-Profit Agency providing affordable housing in our community, we can make a difference in the betterment of the quality of life for our neighbors.
We are planning to organize teams of volunteers, from both professional building personnel and the general public, to join forces in a very productive and satisfying event, where we will achieve multiple tasks in several homes & special projects in one orchestrated effort. We need volunteers for general labor, skilled labor & craftsmen, experienced supervision, and other positions yet to be determined. Additionally, we need building materials, supplies, food & refreshments and contributions to help meet the commitments we will be making to our community. We welcome any suggestions toward organizing this worthy opportunity, and most of all, ask that you make a commitment, and seek that of your friends, associates and neighbors to join us!

Delicious seafood in Hendersonville NC can be found at Blue Water Seafood. I stopped by there for lunch the other day and had the crab cake sandwich plate and it was awesome. I also recently purchased some fresh scallops and fish, cooked it at home, poured some wine, and had a feast. Thank you Blue Water!

Counterfeiting At Brevard College, this economy is killing us!

College Students Arrested for Counterfeiting

Four Brevard College students and former football players are charged with counterfeiting cash tonight. Police say they were running off $20 bills to spend in stores, and to buy drugs.

Officers arrested Blake Spinks, Chase Waldo, Takeem Moore and Darius Williams. Police say they were tipped off by a call from a Wendy's employee who took a fake $20 bill.

Brevard police chief Dennis Wilde says Spinks was the money maker, running it on Staples multi-purpose paper.

Officers say two of the men used the fake money to buy marijuana from a female student on campus. Now the men face possible federal charges.

Brevard College is not commenting on the case.

They Are Asking To Suck Your Blood, please allow!

HENDERSONVILLE – During the busy holiday season, giving blood is not high on the to-do list. Other reasons for the slowdown in blood collections are people taking time off work and not being in their routines. Also, cold and flu season sets in.

After Thanksgiving, blood collectors must go into high gear to stock up for the toughest sustained period of the year: mid-December to mid-January.

Beth Golden, director of blood services for the Henderson County Chapter, American Red Cross, said people should consider giving blood to be one of their gifts to give this year.

With one pint of blood, potentially three lives are saved.

Ten blood drives will occur in December in Henderson County, with the largest drive at Grace Lutheran Church from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Dec. 30.

Donors can sign-up online at www.membersforlife.org/cbsr (code # 6304) or by calling 693-5605. The chapter drive, A Holiday Celebration, will be 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Dec. 15. Call 693-5605 to schedule a donation appointment.

Information on the other blood drives can be found at www.hcredcross.org, by calling 693-5605 or by stopping at the chapter offices at 203 Second Avenue E., Hendersonville.

Donors must be at least 17 years of age, or 16 with parent/guardian permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in general good health; and must present a valid photo ID.

NC State Trooper @ State Fair in Hendersonville NC

Stopped by the "State Trooper" booth at the State Fair to see what was going on. They had a helicopter and many vehicles to show off. Here is a quick pic of a proud State Trooper contributing his time to the NC State Fair in Henderson County. (Pretty much at the Buncombe/Henderson line, but in Henderson County). We also met an officer from the Fletcher Police Dept. named Officer Jason Tweed and he was more than courteous with answering questions and talking to us. Great people, and even great police out here in Hendersonville NC! For the most part.

If this is because we were out there on Sunday... HE WAS TOO!!! Just kidding. I guess this guy got a permit to make sure everyone knows "God Hates Our Sin". I thought that was supposed to be a gimme. Anyway, people looked at him, shyed away, and kept walking and having a good old time at the Hendersonville Apple Fest. Isn't there a third world country somewhere that needs this message more that this spot that probably has about 100 churches in a one mile radius? I just came to have some fun and grab a bite.

Looking at this street brings back many memories, past and recent. Coming here for the Hendersonville Apple Fest, stopping by that awesome bakery, and passing that crazy T-Shirt store (you know, the guy who got in trouble for throwing free t-shirts at people). Anyway... here is a simple picture of Downtown Hendersonville NC. Lots of room on the sidewalks, nice parking, and good room for cars in the streets. One of the better, historic "downtown" set ups in the area. Hendersonville is also becoming a big attraction for retirees. Convenient to many other Cities and towns including Asheville North Carolina, which is only 25 minutes away from this spot.
